Good afternoon guys! | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
It's Martin here. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
Coming up on Newsround: How you train a search and rescue dog. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:16
And... | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
Leicester or Spurs? | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
You tell us who you're backing in the Premier League race! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
A year ago today, the first of two powerful earthquakes struck | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
Nepal in central Asia. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
Since it happened the UK has played a big part in helping people | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
there rebuild their lives. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
Part of that included sending out search and rescue dogs from here, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
and I've been along to meet them. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Nepal's capital city, Kathmandu, looked like this | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
after the second earthquake hit. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
It had a magnitude of 7.8, which means it was very strong. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:58
Tremors were felt in nearby countries Pakistan, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
Bangladesh and India. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Lots of buildings were reduced to rubble and lots of | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
families lost their homes. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
The UK sent a huge amount of highly-trained search | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
and rescue teams to help, including doctors and firefighters. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
Their jobs were to provide first aid, carry out searches, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
and stabilise buildings. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
And it wasn't just us humans doing the work. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
Specialist search dogs, like this one, also played a big part! | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
I've come to this fire station in Birmingham, because this | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
is where these amazing animals are trained to become rescue dogs. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:37
So, just how does a dog become a search and rescue dog? | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
It has to have certain elements - be very focused, have a lot | 0:01:42 | 0:01:47
of drive, those are the main points we look for to convert a normal dog | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
into a search and rescue dog. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
It's just one big game of hide and seek, where the dog goes out | 0:01:56 | 0:02:01
looking for somebody with a squeaky ball, or a toy, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
and once they find them they have to bark and once that happens, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
they get delivered the toy. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
In a real, live situation, when the dog finds somebody, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
it will be me that actually has the toy, who will deliver them. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:19
Can any dog become a search and rescue dog? | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Not really. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
I use border collies, but we have labradors, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
springer spaniels, German sheperds as well. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
So it tends to go down the route of the working breed, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
making sure we can find people and save lives. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
Right now, the UK's efforts are focused on helping the people | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
who live in areas like Nepal, by building homes, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
schools and hospitals. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
Isn't it great we have dogs like these, making sure the people | 0:02:48 | 0:02:53
who live in the affected areas have a bright future. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
The race to be Premier League champions has | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
come down to two clubs - Leicester and Tottenham. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
The Foxes lead by eight points but Spurs will be looking to close | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
the gap tonight when they play West Brom. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
You've been telling us who you want to win the title. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:17
Who are we? | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
Blue army! | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
Who are we? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
Blue army! | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
He came from Italy... | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
To manage City! | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
Ranieri! | 0:03:26 | 0:03:32
Come on Leicester! | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
It's the Leicester boys, making all the noise, | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
everywhere we go! | 0:03:38 | 0:03:43
Leicester City, we're top of the league! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:49
Come on you Spurs! | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
Wherever we go, it's the Tottenham boys making all the noise! | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
Come on you Spurs! | 0:03:58 | 0:04:07
We've got Dele Alli! | 0:04:07 | 0:04:15
Jamie Vardy's having a party! | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
Come on Leicester, you can do it! | 0:04:19 | 0:04:25
Come on Leicester! | 0:04:25 | 0:04:31
Come on you Spurs! | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
Last up - a very different kind of race. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
Racing on office chairs in Taiwan in east Asia. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
People went head-to-head to see who could get to the finish | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
line quickest... | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
Backwards! | 0:04:46 | 0:04:52
That's all from me, Newsround's back on TV tomorrow morning at 7:40. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
Have a great evening! | 0:04:56 | 0:05:00 |
