Nepal's capital city, Kathmandu, looked like this | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50 | |
after the second earthquake hit. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53 | |
It had a magnitude of 7.8, which means it was very strong. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:58 | |
Tremors were felt in nearby countries Pakistan, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00 | |
Bangladesh and India. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02 | |
Lots of buildings were reduced to rubble and lots of | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05 | |
families lost their homes. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06 | |
The UK sent a huge amount of highly-trained search | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09 | |
and rescue teams to help, including doctors and firefighters. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12 | |
Their jobs were to provide first aid, carry out searches, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15 | |
and stabilise buildings. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19 | |
And it wasn't just us humans doing the work. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23 | |

I've come to this fire station in Birmingham, because this | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29 | |
is where these amazing animals are trained to become rescue dogs. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:37 | |
So, just how does a dog become a search and rescue dog? | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42 | |
It has to have certain elements - be very focused, have a lot | 0:01:42 | 0:01:47 | |
of drive, those are the main points we look for to convert a normal dog | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51 | |
into a search and rescue dog. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56 | |
It's just one big game of hide and seek, where the dog goes out | 0:01:56 | 0:02:01 | |
looking for somebody with a squeaky ball, or a toy, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03 | |
and once they find them they have to bark and once that happens, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06 | |
they get delivered the toy. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10 | |
In a real, live situation, when the dog finds somebody, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13 | |
it will be me that actually has the toy, who will deliver them. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:19 | |

I use border collies, but we have labradors, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31 | |
springer spaniels, German sheperds as well. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33 | |
So it tends to go down the route of the working breed, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35 | |
making sure we can find people and save lives. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39 | |
Right now, the UK's efforts are focused on helping the people | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43 | |
who live in areas like Nepal, by building homes, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45 | |
schools and hospitals. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48 | |
Isn't it great we have dogs like these, making sure the people | 0:02:48 | 0:02:53 | |
