Good afternoon. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
I'm Naz and this is Newsround. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
First, the company that owns Alton Towers has been given | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
a massive punishment for making big mistakes that led to | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
a rollercoaster crash last June. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
16 people were injured, five of them seriously, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:23
when their carriage on the Smiler ride hit an empty one on the track. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
Serious accidents like this are extremely rare, so there's | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
been a big investigation into how it happened. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
Today a judge called the crash a "catastrophic failure" | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
and an accident that could have been avoided. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:44
Merlin Attractions has been ordered to pay a fine of ?5 million, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
a record punishment for a theme park. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
Well, BBC reporter Sophie Long sent us this from Alton Towers. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
Merlin Attractions, the company that owns Alton Towers, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
was fined ?5 million today for what the judge called | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
a "catastrophic failure of health and safety rules." | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
Two teenage girls, Vicky Balch and Leah Washington, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
both lost legs after the accident that happened on the Smiler | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
roller coasters here in June of last year. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
One mother, who was on the ride with her two daughters, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
says she is still trying to deal with what happened here last June. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
The judge said the accident could have been avoided | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
if the company had proper plans in place, and he said that people | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
who were trapped on the ride were left there up in the air | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
for far too long, some of them for up to five hours. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
The company apologised to the victims of the crash in court | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
today, and again afterwards, when they reacted to the fine | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
that they have been given. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
But they say they have made changes here, so that something like this | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
can never happen again. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Next, to South Africa where there's been some important news | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
on the future of elephants. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
Jenny has travelled there and sent us this report. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Hi Newsrounders. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
I've only been in South Africa for a few hours, and already | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
I've seen a cheetah, some zebras and a baboon. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
The wildlife here is just incredible. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
I've travelled from Johannesburg up to the north-east of | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
the country, near the famous Kruger National Park, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
that's where lions, rhino and elephants live. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
Now, I'm in South Africa, because elephants are in danger. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
Every year, thousands of them are killed for their ivory | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
in their tasks. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
World leaders are meeting for the next eight days to decide | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
what is to be done about it. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
Yesterday there was a vote on whether countries should be | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
allowed to buy or sell ivory in future. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
And they voted not to. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Some conservationists are happy about this, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
but some countries want to be able to sell ivory, they say to make | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
money to protect elephants. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
There are a lot of decisions still to be made, and I'm | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
going to be right in South Africa reporting on them for Newsround. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
Thanks Jenny. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
Go to Newsround online for our guide on what the ivory trade is, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and how it's affecting elephants around the world. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
You can also watch 11 things you never knew about the animals! | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
And something else you probably never knew, there are jets of water | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
on one of the moons circling the planet Jupiter. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
These images of Europa, sent back from Nasa's hubble space | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
telescope, show what experts reckon is water spurting out | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
from the moon's huge ocean under the surface. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:23
Doctor Sarah Crowther from the University | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
of Manchester explains. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
There's lots of water on Europa. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
But the surface is covered in a very thick layer of ice. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
We know that water is essential to life. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
Nasa was very careful to say they haven't found aliens, they | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
haven't found any life there yet. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
But these jets of water erupting from under the ice surface might | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
make it easier to explore. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
From another planet to a shining star, 15-year-old Ellie Robinson, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
who stormed to gold in the pool at the Rio Paralympics returned | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
to school yesterday, and what a welcome it was. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
The teenage swimmer was greeted by her classmates in a special | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
school assembly where they watched back her medal winning triumph. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
So what's it like for the champion to be back at school, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
and what do her mates make of it all? | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10
It's just having one of my best friends back at school | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
and having someone to talk to. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
We are all really proud of early and what she's done. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
These are ridiculous! | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
This is so cool! | 0:04:18 | 0:04:19
LAUGHTER. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:20
It's quite nice seeing everyone come together, we were all cheering | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
on Ellie, and it's united us, it's really nice | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
and we can all cheer. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
CHEERING. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:27
It's great because I've been waiting to see these guys for ages, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
and it's so nice to be back and talking to them. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
We aren't even talking about Rio, to be honest! | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
Well done Ellie. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:38
Well tomorrow we're speaking to another champion, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
Bake Off champ Nadiya Hussain will be here and we want your | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
questions and baking photos. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
Go online now to send them in. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
We're back at 7:40am tomorrow morning. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
Have a great evening. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56 |
