0:00:540:00:55

Oh-ho-ho! Stop it!

0:00:560:00:58

Oh, it's tickling! Oh-ho-ho! Hello there.

0:00:580:01:01

Look at my new snake. Oh, I love him. Hee-hee!

0:01:010:01:05

And he's got some friends. Ooh!

0:01:050:01:09

Ah, they're all wiggly!

0:01:100:01:12

BEEPING

0:01:120:01:13

Oh! I hear a beep, I see a flash!

0:01:130:01:15

I wonder what they're going to ask. Bye.

0:01:150:01:17

-Hi, Nina!

-Hi!

0:01:210:01:23

We've got a question for you.

0:01:230:01:26

There's a river near our house and it wiggles.

0:01:260:01:31

Why are rivers wiggly?

0:01:310:01:35

That's a great question. Why are rivers wiggly?

0:01:350:01:37

This will be interesting to explore.

0:01:370:01:40

Why don't you come down to my workshop and we'll investigate.

0:01:400:01:43

See you soon, Nina. Bye!

0:01:430:01:47

Bye! Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one

0:01:470:01:50

and I know just who to ask.

0:01:500:01:52

OK, Neurons, time to get to work!

0:01:520:01:54

-ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina!

-OK.

0:02:100:02:14

Today's question is why are rivers wiggly?

0:02:140:02:17

Which Neuron do you think will be most useful

0:02:170:02:19

in helping us find the answer?

0:02:190:02:21

-Me!

-Me!

-Me!

0:02:210:02:23

Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:240:02:27

I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:270:02:31

Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:310:02:32

I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:320:02:35

If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:350:02:37

Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:370:02:39

For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:390:02:41

I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:410:02:44

Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:440:02:46

If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:460:02:49

-my messages help your sense of smell.

-Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:490:02:52

Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:02:520:02:57

It's Felix and Belle!

0:03:000:03:03

Go Felix! Go Belle! Go Felix! Go Belle!

0:03:040:03:07

Go Felix! Go Felix! Go Belle!

0:03:070:03:11

Today's question is why are rivers wiggly?

0:03:110:03:14

Because we can feel and hear water flowing in rivers,

0:03:140:03:17

Felix and Belle will be helping us today.

0:03:170:03:20

But stand by, Neurons, I have a feeling I may need help

0:03:200:03:23

from all of you. Right, I need to get the workshop ready

0:03:230:03:26

before the Explorers arrive.

0:03:260:03:29

Amelia loves ice cream,

0:03:290:03:31

Patrick loves water fights and Radia loves to read.

0:03:310:03:34

But they all want to know why are rivers wiggly?

0:03:340:03:37

-There's a river near where we live.

-It wiggles about.

0:03:370:03:41

Why does it wiggle like that?

0:03:410:03:44

So today, for one day only, Amelia, Patrick and Radia

0:03:440:03:47

become the Explorers.

0:03:470:03:49

-Hi, guys!

-Hi, Nina!

0:03:540:03:56

Welcome to my workshop and thank you for your great question,

0:03:560:04:00

why are rivers wiggly?

0:04:000:04:01

To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:010:04:04

Whoo-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:04:040:04:09

First, let's have a think about rivers. What are they like?

0:04:090:04:13

Moving water.

0:04:130:04:14

Yes. A river is a lot of water that flows or moves.

0:04:140:04:19

And rivers always flow in one direction - downhill.

0:04:190:04:23

It's like a slide.

0:04:230:04:24

If you were at the top of a slide, you would slide down to the bottom.

0:04:240:04:29

But if you were at the bottom, you wouldn't slide uphill to the top.

0:04:290:04:33

Just like a river.

0:04:330:04:34

And some rivers have flat parts as well as downhill parts,

0:04:340:04:38

but the water always flows in one direction.

0:04:380:04:41

Here we have some pictures of rivers.

0:04:410:04:43

And as you can see, some are straight and flat,

0:04:430:04:47

some are hilly, and some are wiggly.

0:04:470:04:51

Oh! I like that one!

0:04:510:04:53

It's extra wiggly!

0:04:530:04:55

Yes, it's very wiggly. Whoo!

0:04:550:05:00

Ha-ha-ha!

0:05:000:05:01

The ground at the side of a river is called a riverbank.

0:05:010:05:05

And you should always be with an adult when you're near a river,

0:05:050:05:09

-and you shouldn't go too near to the edge.

-Very wise, Nina.

0:05:090:05:12

Rivers start as small streams high up in the hills and the mountains,

0:05:120:05:17

and they flow downhill and join up with other streams and rivers.

0:05:170:05:21

Rivers keep flowing on and on until they reach the sea or a lake.

0:05:210:05:27

And rivers are part of nature, like mountains or trees.

0:05:270:05:31

-So who wants to make a river?

-ALL: Me!

0:05:310:05:34

-NEURONS:

-We do, Nina!

-OK, let's go!

0:05:340:05:36

Here's our big hill, and it's made of sand and different sized stones.

0:05:380:05:43

We're going to make a river using our watering cans.

0:05:430:05:46

We're going to pour the water onto the big hill

0:05:460:05:49

and watch what happens to the sand and stones.

0:05:490:05:52

OK, let's get pouring.

0:05:520:05:53

It's raining, it's pouring!

0:05:590:06:02

What's the water doing to the sand?

0:06:020:06:05

Look, Nina, the water is washing the sand down the hill.

0:06:050:06:09

That's right, Felix.

0:06:090:06:10

And did you see that some of the smaller stones

0:06:100:06:13

were moved by the water, too?

0:06:130:06:15

But what did the water do to the big stones?

0:06:150:06:18

-It didn't move them.

-That's right.

0:06:180:06:20

The water can't move the big stones, so it goes around them.

0:06:200:06:24

But it can move the sand and some of the smaller stones.

0:06:240:06:27

And this is what happens in a real river, too.

0:06:270:06:30

They pick up small stones and move them.

0:06:300:06:33

Sometimes just a little way, and sometimes a long way.

0:06:330:06:36

Ooh!

0:06:360:06:38

Now we're going to pretend that this glass of water is a river.

0:06:380:06:44

And look, here's the sand at the bottom of the river.

0:06:440:06:47

But because the water's not moving, the sand is just sitting there.

0:06:470:06:52

But water moves in a river,

0:06:520:06:54

so I'm going to give it a little stir to move the water.

0:06:540:06:58

Whoo! What's happening?

0:07:000:07:02

-The water's moving the sand.

-That's right.

0:07:020:07:07

The sand is being picked up by the moving water, just like in a river.

0:07:070:07:11

We know that rivers flow in one direction.

0:07:110:07:14

Sometimes rivers can carry stones or sand or mud with them in the water.

0:07:140:07:19

I love how they rush along very fast. Whoosh!

0:07:190:07:24

They do rush along, don't they?

0:07:240:07:26

And I think we need to go somewhere where there's lots of rushing

0:07:260:07:30

to find out more.

0:07:300:07:31

Hmm! Where do you think we're going today?

0:07:340:07:37

Nina said somewhere with lots of rushing. Maybe it's a playground.

0:07:370:07:41

-Children rush about there a lot.

-I love playgrounds! Oh!

0:07:410:07:45

Do you think there'll be swings? Swings are my favourite!

0:07:450:07:49

Or a roundabout! I like roundabouts best.

0:07:490:07:52

Hey! This is much better than a playground! Look!

0:07:520:07:57

So, we found out that rivers flow in one direction,

0:07:590:08:02

and they can carry small stones and sand with them.

0:08:020:08:05

But now we're going to find out just how fast they can go. Look at that!

0:08:050:08:10

We should be careful around water, Nina.

0:08:100:08:13

You're right, Luke, water can be dangerous.

0:08:130:08:16

Oh! It's going very fast, Nina.

0:08:160:08:18

It is, Felix, and we're going to feel how fast it is.

0:08:180:08:23

This is a water rapids ride, and rapid means fast.

0:08:230:08:27

This ride has wiggly sides, just like a river.

0:08:270:08:31

And in our boat we are going to be just like little stones

0:08:310:08:34

getting swept along by the water.

0:08:340:08:37

Now, we're going to see if our boat goes faster and slower

0:08:370:08:40

at different times.

0:08:400:08:42

So if we go fast, we'll shout, "Fast,"

0:08:420:08:44

and if we go slow, we'll shout, "Slow." Let's go!

0:08:440:08:47

Hello. Thank you.

0:08:500:08:52

Yay!

0:08:560:08:58

-Hold on tight, everyone.

-Thank you.

0:08:580:09:01

ALL: Slow!

0:09:030:09:05

-NEURONS:

-Fast!

0:09:050:09:07

Whoo!

0:09:070:09:08

ALL: Fast!

0:09:100:09:11

-NEURONS:

-Slow!

0:09:110:09:14

ALL: Slow!

0:09:140:09:15

-NEURONS:

-Whoo!

0:09:170:09:20

ALL: Fast!

0:09:210:09:23

NEURONS: Fast!

0:09:250:09:26

ALL: Fast!

0:09:260:09:27

ALL: Slow!

0:09:290:09:31

Whoo!

0:09:310:09:32

That was you, that time!

0:09:320:09:35

-That was so much fun, wasn't it?

-It was great!

0:09:350:09:38

And when the water was going fast, were we going fast or slow?

0:09:380:09:42

-Fast!

-Yeah.

0:09:420:09:44

-And what happened when the water slowed down?

-We went slower.

0:09:440:09:48

We did. And real rivers do the same thing.

0:09:480:09:51

At some points, they go fast, and at some points, they go slow.

0:09:510:09:55

And when rivers move fast,

0:09:550:09:57

the little stones under the water move fast, too.

0:09:570:10:00

And when the river moves slowly, the little stones move slowly.

0:10:000:10:04

Sometimes when the river moves really slowly,

0:10:040:10:07

the little stones stop and drop to the bottom of the river.

0:10:070:10:11

-What makes the river wiggle, Nina?

-Ah-ha!

0:10:110:10:14

Well, let's find out, Explorers.

0:10:140:10:16

You asked why are rivers wiggly? And so far we've discovered that rivers

0:10:180:10:23

flow in one direction, and they sometimes pick up sand and stones.

0:10:230:10:27

We also found out that rivers go faster and slower

0:10:270:10:30

at different times. But what makes the river wiggle?

0:10:300:10:34

Well, we're here on a footbridge next to a real river.

0:10:340:10:37

-Can you see the wiggles?

-Yeah!

0:10:370:10:40

And we have our very own wiggly river in this tray of sand.

0:10:400:10:45

So let's see if we can spot the sand moving

0:10:450:10:48

when our river flows downhill.

0:10:480:10:50

-Look, Explorers, what's happening here?

-The water is moving the sand.

0:11:090:11:14

Yeah. When it moves fast, like here, it picks up bits of sand.

0:11:140:11:19

But when it moves slow, like at the edge here, it drops them.

0:11:190:11:24

The moving water changes the shape of the river.

0:11:240:11:26

Wiggle!

0:11:260:11:28

Moving the sand and tiny stones is what changes the shape of the river.

0:11:280:11:33

And you know, rivers are changing shape very slowly all the time.

0:11:330:11:37

Even this one is right now.

0:11:370:11:38

-Rivers are brilliant, aren't they?

-Yeah!

0:11:400:11:43

So your question was, why are rivers wiggly?

0:11:480:11:51

And I think we've answered it.

0:11:510:11:53

I love to hear the water whooshing, and it goes in one direction.

0:11:530:11:57

I liked it when we felt the water pick us up

0:11:570:12:00

and move us along in the boat.

0:12:000:12:02

When the water goes faster, it picks up sand and stones

0:12:020:12:05

and moves them along.

0:12:050:12:07

And when it goes slower, it drops them at the edge of the river.

0:12:070:12:11

This builds a riverbank and makes rivers wiggle!

0:12:110:12:14

They wiggle-wiggle-wiggle all the way to the sea! Yeah!

0:12:140:12:19

-So, I hope that's answered your question.

-Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:12:200:12:25

You're welcome. Bye!
