Today's question is, why do flowers smell so nice?

We'll definitely use our sense of smell for this. Ollie will help.

Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimeters arrive.

Henry likes climbing. His sister, Rosie, loves horseriding.

Nicola likes ice skating. They all want to know why flowers smell nice.

Today, for one day only, Henry, Rosy and Nicola become the experimenters.

ALL: Hi, Nina.

Welcome to my science lab. Come in!

It's lovely to see you.

So, your question is, why do flowers smell so nice?

Why do you want to know that?

Because when my mum puts flowers in the vase, they smell nice.

And we want to know why.

I love it when flowers are in my lab.

They help take away the nasty smells from some of my experiments.

We need to investigate. For our first experiment,

-we're going to use our senses.

-ALL: Woo! A senses experiment.

We're ready, Nina!

OK, experimenters. Get those noses working.

I'm going to pass round this flower.

Have a good smell.

The roses have a lovely perfumey smell.

OK. Why don't you have a good sniff of all the other flowers?

-So, what does this flower smell like?

-Nothing.

Of nothing? Let me have a smell.

This flower doesn't have much scent at all.

-Perfume.

-Like perfume?

-I don't smell anything from this one.

-Neither do I.

-Ooh, what does that flower smell like?

-Horrible!

It's horrible! This senses experiment has shown us

that not all flowers smell nice.

For this experiment, we're all wearing our safety goggles.

Yes, it's very important to protect our eyes

when we're doing experiments in Nina's science lab.

And I'll protect my hands as I'll be using chemicals.

OK. In these test tubes are different chemicals.

Some chemicals can harm us if we breathe them in

or if we put our nose close to them. I'll waft the smell towards you.

Ooh, whiffy. They don't smell very nice.

-Oh, is it not very nice?

-No.

OK, well going to mix these two together...

..in this test tube.

I'm very carefully going to put this test tube into some hot water

to heat up the chemicals.

So, our test tube has cooled down after its hot bath.

I'm going to add one more chemical to make it safe to smell.

OK, guys.

What can you smell now?

Apples.

Apples, yeah?

You're right, apples. Ha ha!

So, I took different chemicals that didn't smell very nice

and, by mixing them together, made a lovely appley smell.

-It's like smelly magic!

-It's the magic of science, Ollie.

So, this experiment has shown us that smells can be made

by mixing different things together.

Flowers mix things together to make their smells too.

But to find out why flowers smell,

we're going to visit some special friends in the garden.

Off we go for another adventure.

Nina said she's taking us to meet some friends in the garden.

-I have a feeling it might be birds.

-Yeah! It might be big, black crows.

Don't we look great? These are special beekeeper outfits

to keep us safe.

The friends I want you to meet in this lovely flower garden

are some very busy bees. So, follow me!

-Our beekeeper Vince is trained to look after bees.

Bees can sting, so you should always be very careful around them.

What an amazing sight! All those busy bees hard at work.

Now, this is called a beehive. Bees live in here

and their job is to make honey.

Did Nina say honey?! Oh, I LOVE eating honey!

It's so sweet and runny and... yum, yum, yummy!

The bees that we can see buzzing around the garden are collect nectar

from the inside of the flowers.

Nectar is a sugary, sweet liquid that some plants make

and the bees bring it back here to the beehive to make it into honey.

But how do think the bees find the flowers?

-Do they see the bright colours?

-Bees have a good sense of sight,

but they also have a very good sense of smell.

the flowers create special smells to attract bees and other insects

so that they come and collect their nectar. But how do the flowers make

so many different, lovely smells? We need to go back to the lab!

We're going to make our very own smells, just like flowers.

All these bottles have different perfume oils in them.

We're going to have a good smell and choose our three favourite scents.

Let's get sniffing!

-All these perfume oils come from plants and flowers,

so a rose oil comes from roses! Have you picked your three favourites?

-Yes.

-OK. We're going to put one drop of each of our chosen perfume scents

into the test tube and add a little water.

Well done, guys, we've all made our very own perfume! Let's sniff them.

-Minty orange.

-Minty and orange? Lovely! Henry, what's yours like?

-Em, orange.

-It's sort of minty.

Lovely! You've done really well! Well, I'm afraid, guys...

mine's not very nice. I used some of the same oils that you guys did,

but my mixture's completely different and not very nice at all!

So this experiment has shown us that new and different smells can be made

by mixing other smells together, and that's what flowers do!

You asked, why do flowers smell so nice? And I think we've answered it!

First we found out that while some flowers smell nice, some don't.

We discovered that flowers give off a scent

to help bees and other insects find their nectar.

They take smelly chemicals from the soil and mix them to make smells.

By smelling different to other flowers,

they can attract the bees and other insects they need.

These insects then help them make more flowers.
