Beautiful day today, eh? | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
Look at the sea, Salty. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
Brimming with adventures, stories. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
What's that you've got? | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
What have you got? Where do you get... Oh, look at that. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Oh, do you see that? | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
That is a traditional village hat. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
I haven't seen one of these in Staithes for a long, long time. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
Yeah, beautiful. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
You know, all the women and girls used to wear them to help | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
them carry the buckets of fish on their heads. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
Imagine that, Salty. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
Do you know, I remember the day when Little Sailor Sue wore hers | 0:01:54 | 0:02:00
to the beach. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
HE CHUCKLES | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
I'll tell you the story. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Yeah, it all happened when I was a boy, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
in a twinkly time, long, long ago. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
All right, Ernie? Do you want to meet Sue? | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
I used to run down to the beach as often as I could. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
Hello, Sue. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
Meeting up with my best friends Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
One spring day, Ernie and I were playing ball on the beach. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:37
Little Sailor Sue came to join us wearing a Staithes village hat, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
which had lots of frills on it. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
And she was balancing a basket on her head, too. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
-Shall we see if I can balance it all the way to the rockpools? -Yeah. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
So, off we went. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Sue kept her head very straight, and the basket didn't slip once. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:58
Well, soon we'd reached our favourite rockpool. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
Sally the Starfish and Andrew the Anemone were playing | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
catch with Sally's bouncy ball, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
when they heard the sound of voices, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
drifting melodiously across the rockpool floor. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
HE SINGS IN HIGH-PITCHED VOICE | 0:03:29 | 0:03:35
"What's that?" asked Andrew. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
"I don't know," said Sally, looking baffled. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
"Let's go and see." | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
So, they followed the sound of the singing until they came to | 0:03:43 | 0:03:49
a rather tall and colourful pyramid of sea snails. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:55
Yes! Sea snails. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Sea snails in top hats, sea snails in woolly hats, | 0:03:57 | 0:04:02
sea snails in glasses and beards and moustaches. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:07
And they were singing! | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
"It's Sidney's Snail Choir", said Sally. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
"Don't they sound amazing?" | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
"Thanks," said a snail with a large moustache. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
"We're just getting ready for the Spring Tide show." | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
"But where's Sidney?" asked Sally. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
For although she could see a lot of singing snails, | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
not one was her dear friend Sidney. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
And suddenly, she heard an unusual sound. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
HE HICCUPS | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
Just then, Sidney appeared from behind his friends. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
"I'm... I'm here!", he said. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
"I've got - hic! - I've got hic-hic-hiccups!" | 0:04:47 | 0:04:54
Poor Sidney! Each time he hiccupped, his shell shot up and spun around. | 0:04:54 | 0:05:00
"I can't - hic! - perform like this," said Sidney sadly. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:06
"And I wanted to sing a special - hic! | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
"song for all my rockpool - hic! - friends." | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
"Oh, no!" said Andrew. "That's terrible news." | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
"My choir will have to - hic! - sing it - hic! - without me. Hic!" | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
"BOO!" | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
shouted Andrew, very suddenly waving his tentacles wildly at Sidney. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
SALTY WHIMPERS | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
He wanted to surprise him, because, you know, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
they do say that surprises can sometimes make your hiccups go away. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:36
"Nothing surprises me. Hic!" said Sidney. "I'm not a very - hic! - | 0:05:36 | 0:05:42
"surprisable sort of snail. Hic!" | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
"Well, if you can't sing because of your hiccups, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:50
"come and join our game of catch instead," said Sally. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
SALTY BARKS | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
Yes, yes, Salty, I know. You like a game of catch, don't you? | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
Oh, dear me, you do. Anyway... | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
Sally threw the ball to Andrew, Andrew threw it to | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Sidney, Sidney stretched out his snail tentacles, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:09
and was just about to catch it when... | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
"HIC!" | 0:06:11 | 0:06:12
..his shell spun upwards, hit the ball, | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
sent it flying off in the direction of the thick seaweed. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
"Sorry!", said Sidney, as they went to look for it. "I - hic! - | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
"I hope it isn't - hic! - isn't lost." | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
Sally peered into the thick seaweed. "Wait, wait! | 0:06:28 | 0:06:33
"I think I've found it," she said. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
And then she saw another one, stuck to the seaweed, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
and there was something very strange about it. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
Andrew came to look, too. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
"It looks just like your ball, but it's dancing!" he giggled. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
And sure enough, when they looked closely, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
they could see lots and lots of little balls jiggling about. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:57
Sidney nudged one gently. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
"Um... Hic! | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
"It's as if there's something inside that wants to get out." | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
And then, suddenly, almost by magic, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:13
all the little balls started popping open. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
HE IMITATES BUBBLES POPPING | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
Sidney was so surprised, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:24
he did a somersault. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
For out swam the most | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
curious-looking creatures, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
with tentacles for noses and flouncy-looking frills all | 0:07:32 | 0:07:37
around their bodies. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
"Wow!" said Sally. "Who are you?" | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
"We're cuttlefish," said one. "We've just popped out of our egg cases." | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
"Woohoo-hoo!" said another. "Ah, we're so happy we could dance!" | 0:07:47 | 0:07:52
said a third. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
"When I'm happy, I usually sing," said Sidney. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
"But I can't today, cos I've got hiccups." | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
"Wait, Sidney!" said Sally, in amazement. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
"You're not hiccupping any more!" | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
SALTY BARKS Yes, I know. The cuttlefish popping | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
out of the eggs had given Sidney such a surprise that he stopped | 0:08:11 | 0:08:16
hiccupping straightaway. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
SALTY WHIMPERS | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
He couldn't thank the cuttlefish enough. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
"Now you'll be able to sing in the | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
"Spring Tide show for all the rockpool!" Sally beamed. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
Well, all the rockpoolers gathered for the song. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
The snails jostled into their positions and then they | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
started to sing. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
# When we share our little rockpool with y-o-o-o-u | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
# We are merry rockpool creatures, wah-ha-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo | 0:08:43 | 0:08:48
# And we'll sing you happy songs from among the seaweed fronds | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
# When we share our little rockpool with you, with you | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
# When we share our little rockpool with you. # | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
Oh! | 0:09:01 | 0:09:02 | |
Everyone loved the song so much they swayed in time and the | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
cuttlefish showed off a very special skill. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
They made beautiful inky patterns in the water. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
A smiley face, and a swirly snail shell, | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
and the best one of all - a heart. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
And when the song ended, everyone cheered. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
"When the tide comes in we're off to the open sea," | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
said one of the cuttlefish, "but it's been wonderful sharing | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
"your rockpool and hearing your song." | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
"I couldn't have sung it without you," said Sidney. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
"Thank you for getting rid of my hiccups." | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
# And we'll sing you happy songs from among the seaweed fronds | 0:09:43 | 0:09:48
# When we share our little rockpool with you, ba-rum! # | 0:09:48 | 0:09:55
When we looked up from the rockpool, Little Sailor Sue was excited. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
-I've got an idea for a game! -What's that? | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
We went back to the beach and Sue put her basket in the sand... | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
You need to throw the ball in the basket. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
ALL: Oh! | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
..and we took turns throwing the ball. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
ALL: Oh! | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
And we played, and we played... | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
-ALL: Yes! -Come on! | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
..until the tide came in, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:23
and covered the rockpool like a great, seaweedy blanket. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Right, come on, Salty girl. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
It's time for us to go and play a game of ball on the beach, too. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
Where is it? Where is it? Oh, ho-ho-ho, there it is. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
Come on, then! Come on. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
Oh, yes, and come back soon for some more Rockpool Tales, all right? | 0:10:48 | 0:10:54
Bye-bye. Come on, girl. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56 |
