-Greetings, ladies. -Hello, Jack. Hello, Salty. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
PHONE RINGS | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
The phone hasn't stopped. Better get going. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Busy, busy, busy. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
-Bye-bye. -Bye. -Bye. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
-How are you, dear? -I've never felt better. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Listen, I like the look of these T-shirts. Salty does too. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
Miss Bowline-Hitch is taking our photos today | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
for her village scrapbook. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
She wants us to look smart so I came up with these T-shirts. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
-Very nice indeed. -I'm a whiz with my fabric paints. -So I see, yes. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
I've got a bit of painting to do on The Rainbow. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
-Got to keep her looking shipshape. -Absolutely. -Ta-ra, then. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
-Have a good day, the pair of you. -And you. Bye-bye. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Right, Ernie. Carry on as normal and I'll just snap away. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
OK, Miss P-H. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
And another pose, please, Ernie. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
All right, Ernie? Hello, you're wearing a tie! | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
-And it's a very wide tie at that. -Yes, it's, erm... | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
Put the box down and lean forward. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
Oh! Oh! Oh! | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
Dithering dabs! | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
Between you and me, it's a bit of a nuisance and it's uncomfortable too. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
But Miss P-H wants me to look smart for my photo. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Oh, dear! | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
Erm... Ernie. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
Oh, no! | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
Oh, really, Ernie. I'll never get a decent photo of you now. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:29
PHONE RINGS | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
Better go. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
But I'll be back later when that tie is dry. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
Busy, busy. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
Bye. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42 | |
Back later? She could be gone all day. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
I don't think I can wear this tie for that long, Jack. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
-But I don't want to take it off and upset. -Listen. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Maybe you should go and see Emily, | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
-because she might be able to help you with your tie problem. -Perfect. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
-I'll do that. -Good man. Come on, Salty. Let's get out of here. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
Look at all that tea all over the floor. Honestly! Come on. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
There she is. The Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20
Come on, Salty. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
On you go. Good girl. There, now. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
You curl up in your bed and I'll find the paint | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
and don't distract me, all right? | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
There we are. That's the one, yes. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
Do you know, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
Ernie did look funny with that tie of his dangling in his tea! | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59
I mean, they are not the easiest things to wear. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
I had to wear a fancy tie once. A bowtie, it was. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
It was very smart indeed. Do you remember? | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
Yes. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11 | |
Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
Once upon a twinkly time, The Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:22
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:27
Salty and I, we were waiting for Pearl, our favourite mermaid, | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
to escort us to the Barnacle Ball. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
I was wearing a smart bowtie | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
and Salty was wearing her red scarf and a silky, pink ribbon. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:40
She looked ever so pretty. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
As we sailed along, we had a little singsong. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
# Just salty dog and me | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
# Upon the briny sea | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
# The sun is up And the wind is fair | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
# We've brushed our fur And we've combed our hair | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
# We've dressed ourselves smartly To go to a party | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
# Just salty dog and me. # | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
"Oh, Salty, my girl," I said, "you are a very fine looking hound." | 0:06:03 | 0:06:10
"I know I am," she whined. "But I've got the scarf. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
"Why do I have to wear a ribbon too? I'm not a ribbon sort of dog." | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
Just then, we heard three perfect notes drifting on the wind. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
"That sounds like Pearl," yapped Salty. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
And sure enough, Pearl popped up from the waves. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
"Sorry I'm late. I couldn't decide what to wear," she chimed. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:35
"In the end, I chose my best necklace." | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Pearl looked beautiful in her necklace made from little pearls | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
and Salty and I had a gift for her, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
which was sure to make her the belle of the ball. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
She opened it eagerly. "Pearl earrings," she said with delight. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:53
"Oh, thank you. They're lovely." And she put them on straight away. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:58
"Right," I said, "let's be off to the ball." | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
And before we could say "bobbly barnacles", | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
we were strolling along the sea bed. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
The Barnacle Ball was taking place | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
on board a splendiferous sunken galleon. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
"Follow me," said Pearl. "The sunken ballroom is this way." | 0:07:15 | 0:07:20
Tangly seaweed push-up through the floors | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
and dangled in the doorways. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
We were just trying to wind our way through it | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
when someone pushed past Pearl quite rudely. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
"I must say, I'm extremely disappointed, Harold," | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
said a cross sounding fish. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
It was Mrs Cod, who was closely followed by her husband, Mr Cod. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
Mrs Cod could not find an outfit to wear to the ball, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:48
so she was in a panic. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
"I have been looking everywhere, Penelope, dear," | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
Mr Cod told his wife. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
"But because you are such a perfect Cod, | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
"it is hard to find an outfit that is good enough for you." | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
"But the ball is about to begin," said Mrs Cod. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
"I must, must, must get a move on." "Yes, dear," said Mr Cod. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:12
And then the Cods pushed past us again, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
causing Pearl to whirl around | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
until her lovely long hair tangled in the seaweed. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
She tried to untangle it and one of her earrings came loose. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:28
Downwards it drifted and before we could catch it, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
it slipped through a crack in the wooden floor. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
"Don't worry, Pearl. We'll get it out in no time," I said. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
But the crack was too small and my hand wouldn't fit. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
Even Salty's paw was too big. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
"What am I going to do," cried Pearl. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
A shark swam by and offered to help. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
"Tell you what," it said, "I'll bash in the crack with my head. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
"That will make it wider." | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
Well, it biffed and it boffed and it bashed quite a lot, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
but it couldn't make the crack any bigger | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
and it ended up with a lumpy bump on its head. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
"Ouch," said the shark. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
Next, a sawfish swam by with a snout full of teeth and offered to help. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:17
"I'll use my saw because that's what it's for," it said. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
And it gnashed and it gnawed and it chipped and it sawed, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:26
but it couldn't make the crack any bigger. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
"I think I've lost a tooth," it moaned. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
"Oh dear," said Pearl, "I think my pearl earring has gone for ever. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:39
"Now then, Pearl," I said, "don't upset yourself. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
"I've heard that it's quite the thing nowadays to wear one earring. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
"Kiki Cutlass the pirate, she does it all the time. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
"So let's just go to the ball and forget about it." | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
I could see that Pearl was a little sad but we headed for the ballroom. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:59
The dancing had just begun and crowds of colourful sea creatures | 0:09:59 | 0:10:04
shimmered to the wonderful sounds of the Galleon band. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
It was such a marvellous thing to see. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
All those glittering tails and fins. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
Salty couldn't wait to join in. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:19
Salty is a rather fabulous dancer in her spare time, aren't you, my girl? | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
Yes. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27 | |
But as she was dancing, she kept trying to shake her ribbon off | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
because it felt very uncomfortable. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
She's not really a ribbon sort of dog. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
So there we were, waltzing and weaving | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
and scratching with the dancers at the Barnacle Ball | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
when suddenly, Mrs Cod swished past with her husband and guess what. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:49
She had found something to wear and it was dangling from her fin. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:55
"Look," cried Pearl. "That's my pearl earring!" | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
"Your pearl earring?" Mrs Cod replied. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
"Indeed, it is not. Tell her Harold." | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
"Well," said Harold, about to start. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
"My husband gave it to me just a moment ago," | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
interrupted Mrs Cod, "didn't you?" | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
"Yes, dear," said Mr Cod. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
"I found it on my way here," he added proudly. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
"Isn't it lovely?" | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
We all looked flabbergasted. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
"Pity it isn't pink though," Mr Cod continued. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:29
And he looked keenly at Salty's ribbon. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
"Pink is Penelope's favourite colour." | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
And then, Salty's whiskers whiffled. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
She was having one of her bright ideas. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
She gently pulled off her ribbon and proudly offered it to Mrs Cod. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:48
"I think she wants to swap her ribbon for the earring," I said. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:53
She isn't really a ribbon sort of dog. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
Mrs Cod, she was overjoyed at this idea | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
and the pink ribbon really suited her. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
"I'm not really an earring wearing sort of dog either," said Salty. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:09
And she gave the year into Pearl, | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
which made her the happiest mermaid at the Barnacle Ball. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
And probably the pearliest! | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
So we danced and we danced all night | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
until the whole Galleon was full of happy, dancy bubbles. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:29
Then, when Salty's paws got hot and needed a rest, | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
we jumped back on board The Rainbow | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
and set our course for Staithes and home. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
Oh, it was a lovely evening though. She does like dancing. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:46
You liked that story, didn't you, Salty? | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
Jack! Salty! Over here. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
Ernie looks happy, doesn't he? Come on. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
Hello, everybody. Right, Ernie, I'm ready to take your photograph. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
I hope you've got that tie under control. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
I'm sorry, Miss P-H, but I can't wear this tie. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
I was getting myself into a right messy muddle with it. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
-What? -Oh, oh! | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
But what about my scrapbook? You won't look smart for my photo. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:22
Of course I will. I'm still wearing a tie. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
Only this tie won't get caught in my fish crates! | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
-Emily made it for me. She's a star! -Isn't that clever? And smart. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:36
-I love it. -It's very funny. It's very you. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
And one with you too, Jack. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
Smashing! | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
You know what, I'm going to get Emily to make me a T-shirt | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
with a bowtie on the front. How about that? | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
Come on, Salty. Me with a bowtie stuck on a T-shirt! | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
