Lovely!

0:01:420:01:44

-Greetings, ladies.

-Hello, Jack. Hello, Salty.

0:01:440:01:48

PHONE RINGS

0:01:480:01:51

The phone hasn't stopped. Better get going.

0:01:510:01:54

Busy, busy, busy.

0:01:540:01:56

-Bye-bye.

-Bye.

-Bye.

0:01:560:01:58

-How are you, dear?

-I've never felt better.

0:02:000:02:03

Listen, I like the look of these T-shirts. Salty does too.

0:02:030:02:06

Miss Bowline-Hitch is taking our photos today

0:02:060:02:10

for her village scrapbook.

0:02:100:02:12

She wants us to look smart so I came up with these T-shirts.

0:02:120:02:16

-Very nice indeed.

-I'm a whiz with my fabric paints.

-So I see, yes.

0:02:160:02:21

I've got a bit of painting to do on The Rainbow.

0:02:210:02:24

-Got to keep her looking shipshape.

-Absolutely.

-Ta-ra, then.

0:02:240:02:27

-Have a good day, the pair of you.

-And you. Bye-bye.

0:02:270:02:30

Right, Ernie. Carry on as normal and I'll just snap away.

0:02:300:02:35

OK, Miss P-H.

0:02:350:02:36

And another pose, please, Ernie.

0:02:430:02:47

All right, Ernie? Hello, you're wearing a tie!

0:02:470:02:51

-And it's a very wide tie at that.

-Yes, it's, erm...

0:02:510:02:55

Put the box down and lean forward.

0:02:550:02:59

Oh! Oh! Oh!

0:03:000:03:02

Dithering dabs!

0:03:030:03:06

Between you and me, it's a bit of a nuisance and it's uncomfortable too.

0:03:060:03:11

But Miss P-H wants me to look smart for my photo.

0:03:110:03:15

Oh, dear!

0:03:170:03:19

Erm... Ernie.

0:03:190:03:21

Oh, no!

0:03:230:03:24

Oh, really, Ernie. I'll never get a decent photo of you now.

0:03:240:03:29

PHONE RINGS

0:03:290:03:31

Better go.

0:03:320:03:34

But I'll be back later when that tie is dry.

0:03:340:03:38

Busy, busy.

0:03:380:03:40

Bye.

0:03:400:03:42

Back later? She could be gone all day.

0:03:430:03:46

I don't think I can wear this tie for that long, Jack.

0:03:460:03:49

-But I don't want to take it off and upset.

-Listen.

0:03:490:03:52

Maybe you should go and see Emily,

0:03:520:03:54

-because she might be able to help you with your tie problem.

-Perfect.

0:03:540:03:58

-I'll do that.

-Good man. Come on, Salty. Let's get out of here.

0:03:580:04:03

Look at all that tea all over the floor. Honestly! Come on.

0:04:030:04:07

There she is. The Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:04:150:04:20

Come on, Salty.

0:04:240:04:26

On you go. Good girl. There, now.

0:04:380:04:41

You curl up in your bed and I'll find the paint

0:04:410:04:44

and don't distract me, all right?

0:04:440:04:47

There we are. That's the one, yes.

0:04:480:04:51

Do you know,

0:04:530:04:54

Ernie did look funny with that tie of his dangling in his tea!

0:04:540:04:59

I mean, they are not the easiest things to wear.

0:04:590:05:02

I had to wear a fancy tie once. A bowtie, it was.

0:05:020:05:06

It was very smart indeed. Do you remember?

0:05:060:05:09

Yes.

0:05:090:05:11

Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story.

0:05:110:05:14

Once upon a twinkly time, The Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:05:170:05:22

waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:05:220:05:27

Salty and I, we were waiting for Pearl, our favourite mermaid,

0:05:270:05:31

to escort us to the Barnacle Ball.

0:05:310:05:33

I was wearing a smart bowtie

0:05:330:05:35

and Salty was wearing her red scarf and a silky, pink ribbon.

0:05:350:05:40

She looked ever so pretty.

0:05:400:05:42

As we sailed along, we had a little singsong.

0:05:420:05:44

# Just salty dog and me

0:05:440:05:47

# Upon the briny sea

0:05:470:05:49

# The sun is up And the wind is fair

0:05:490:05:52

# We've brushed our fur And we've combed our hair

0:05:520:05:56

# We've dressed ourselves smartly To go to a party

0:05:560:06:00

# Just salty dog and me. #

0:06:000:06:02

"Oh, Salty, my girl," I said, "you are a very fine looking hound."

0:06:030:06:10

"I know I am," she whined. "But I've got the scarf.

0:06:100:06:13

"Why do I have to wear a ribbon too? I'm not a ribbon sort of dog."

0:06:130:06:18

Just then, we heard three perfect notes drifting on the wind.

0:06:180:06:23

"That sounds like Pearl," yapped Salty.

0:06:230:06:26

And sure enough, Pearl popped up from the waves.

0:06:260:06:30

"Sorry I'm late. I couldn't decide what to wear," she chimed.

0:06:300:06:35

"In the end, I chose my best necklace."

0:06:350:06:38

Pearl looked beautiful in her necklace made from little pearls

0:06:380:06:42

and Salty and I had a gift for her,

0:06:420:06:45

which was sure to make her the belle of the ball.

0:06:450:06:48

She opened it eagerly. "Pearl earrings," she said with delight.

0:06:480:06:53

"Oh, thank you. They're lovely." And she put them on straight away.

0:06:530:06:58

"Right," I said, "let's be off to the ball."

0:06:580:07:02

And before we could say "bobbly barnacles",

0:07:020:07:05

we were strolling along the sea bed.

0:07:050:07:07

The Barnacle Ball was taking place

0:07:080:07:11

on board a splendiferous sunken galleon.

0:07:110:07:15

"Follow me," said Pearl. "The sunken ballroom is this way."

0:07:150:07:20

Tangly seaweed push-up through the floors

0:07:200:07:24

and dangled in the doorways.

0:07:240:07:26

We were just trying to wind our way through it

0:07:260:07:30

when someone pushed past Pearl quite rudely.

0:07:300:07:33

"I must say, I'm extremely disappointed, Harold,"

0:07:330:07:36

said a cross sounding fish.

0:07:360:07:39

It was Mrs Cod, who was closely followed by her husband, Mr Cod.

0:07:390:07:43

Mrs Cod could not find an outfit to wear to the ball,

0:07:430:07:48

so she was in a panic.

0:07:480:07:50

"I have been looking everywhere, Penelope, dear,"

0:07:500:07:53

Mr Cod told his wife.

0:07:530:07:55

"But because you are such a perfect Cod,

0:07:550:07:58

"it is hard to find an outfit that is good enough for you."

0:07:580:08:02

"But the ball is about to begin," said Mrs Cod.

0:08:020:08:06

"I must, must, must get a move on." "Yes, dear," said Mr Cod.

0:08:060:08:12

And then the Cods pushed past us again,

0:08:120:08:15

causing Pearl to whirl around

0:08:150:08:18

until her lovely long hair tangled in the seaweed.

0:08:180:08:22

She tried to untangle it and one of her earrings came loose.

0:08:220:08:28

Downwards it drifted and before we could catch it,

0:08:280:08:31

it slipped through a crack in the wooden floor.

0:08:310:08:35

"Don't worry, Pearl. We'll get it out in no time," I said.

0:08:350:08:39

But the crack was too small and my hand wouldn't fit.

0:08:390:08:42

Even Salty's paw was too big.

0:08:420:08:45

"What am I going to do," cried Pearl.

0:08:450:08:48

A shark swam by and offered to help.

0:08:480:08:52

"Tell you what," it said, "I'll bash in the crack with my head.

0:08:520:08:55

"That will make it wider."

0:08:550:08:57

Well, it biffed and it boffed and it bashed quite a lot,

0:08:570:09:02

but it couldn't make the crack any bigger

0:09:020:09:05

and it ended up with a lumpy bump on its head.

0:09:050:09:08

"Ouch," said the shark.

0:09:080:09:10

Next, a sawfish swam by with a snout full of teeth and offered to help.

0:09:100:09:17

"I'll use my saw because that's what it's for," it said.

0:09:170:09:21

And it gnashed and it gnawed and it chipped and it sawed,

0:09:210:09:26

but it couldn't make the crack any bigger.

0:09:260:09:29

"I think I've lost a tooth," it moaned.

0:09:290:09:33

"Oh dear," said Pearl, "I think my pearl earring has gone for ever.

0:09:330:09:39

"Now then, Pearl," I said, "don't upset yourself.

0:09:390:09:43

"I've heard that it's quite the thing nowadays to wear one earring.

0:09:430:09:47

"Kiki Cutlass the pirate, she does it all the time.

0:09:470:09:50

"So let's just go to the ball and forget about it."

0:09:500:09:53

I could see that Pearl was a little sad but we headed for the ballroom.

0:09:530:09:59

The dancing had just begun and crowds of colourful sea creatures

0:09:590:10:04

shimmered to the wonderful sounds of the Galleon band.

0:10:040:10:08

It was such a marvellous thing to see.

0:10:090:10:12

All those glittering tails and fins.

0:10:120:10:15

Salty couldn't wait to join in.

0:10:150:10:19

Salty is a rather fabulous dancer in her spare time, aren't you, my girl?

0:10:190:10:24

Yes.

0:10:240:10:27

But as she was dancing, she kept trying to shake her ribbon off

0:10:270:10:30

because it felt very uncomfortable.

0:10:300:10:33

She's not really a ribbon sort of dog.

0:10:330:10:36

So there we were, waltzing and weaving

0:10:360:10:39

and scratching with the dancers at the Barnacle Ball

0:10:390:10:43

when suddenly, Mrs Cod swished past with her husband and guess what.

0:10:430:10:49

She had found something to wear and it was dangling from her fin.

0:10:490:10:55

"Look," cried Pearl. "That's my pearl earring!"

0:10:550:10:59

"Your pearl earring?" Mrs Cod replied.

0:10:590:11:03

"Indeed, it is not. Tell her Harold."

0:11:030:11:06

"Well," said Harold, about to start.

0:11:060:11:08

"My husband gave it to me just a moment ago,"

0:11:080:11:11

interrupted Mrs Cod, "didn't you?"

0:11:110:11:13

"Yes, dear," said Mr Cod.

0:11:130:11:15

"I found it on my way here," he added proudly.

0:11:150:11:19

"Isn't it lovely?"

0:11:190:11:21

We all looked flabbergasted.

0:11:210:11:24

"Pity it isn't pink though," Mr Cod continued.

0:11:240:11:29

And he looked keenly at Salty's ribbon.

0:11:290:11:32

"Pink is Penelope's favourite colour."

0:11:320:11:35

And then, Salty's whiskers whiffled.

0:11:350:11:39

She was having one of her bright ideas.

0:11:390:11:42

She gently pulled off her ribbon and proudly offered it to Mrs Cod.

0:11:420:11:48

"I think she wants to swap her ribbon for the earring," I said.

0:11:480:11:53

She isn't really a ribbon sort of dog.

0:11:530:11:57

Mrs Cod, she was overjoyed at this idea

0:11:570:12:01

and the pink ribbon really suited her.

0:12:010:12:04

"I'm not really an earring wearing sort of dog either," said Salty.

0:12:040:12:09

And she gave the year into Pearl,

0:12:090:12:12

which made her the happiest mermaid at the Barnacle Ball.

0:12:120:12:17

And probably the pearliest!

0:12:170:12:20

So we danced and we danced all night

0:12:210:12:23

until the whole Galleon was full of happy, dancy bubbles.

0:12:230:12:29

Then, when Salty's paws got hot and needed a rest,

0:12:290:12:33

we jumped back on board The Rainbow

0:12:330:12:36

and set our course for Staithes and home.

0:12:360:12:40

Oh, it was a lovely evening though. She does like dancing.

0:12:400:12:46

You liked that story, didn't you, Salty?

0:12:530:12:55

Jack! Salty! Over here.

0:12:550:12:57

Ernie looks happy, doesn't he? Come on.

0:12:570:13:01

Hello, everybody. Right, Ernie, I'm ready to take your photograph.

0:13:010:13:05

I hope you've got that tie under control.

0:13:050:13:09

I'm sorry, Miss P-H, but I can't wear this tie.

0:13:090:13:11

I was getting myself into a right messy muddle with it.

0:13:110:13:14

-What?

-Oh, oh!

0:13:140:13:17

But what about my scrapbook? You won't look smart for my photo.

0:13:170:13:22

Of course I will. I'm still wearing a tie.

0:13:220:13:24

Only this tie won't get caught in my fish crates!

0:13:240:13:28

-Emily made it for me. She's a star!

-Isn't that clever? And smart.

0:13:300:13:36

-I love it.

-It's very funny. It's very you.

0:13:360:13:40

And one with you too, Jack.

0:13:400:13:43

Smashing!

0:13:430:13:46

You know what, I'm going to get Emily to make me a T-shirt

0:13:460:13:50

with a bowtie on the front. How about that?

0:13:500:13:52

Come on, Salty. Me with a bowtie stuck on a T-shirt!
