SHE SIGHS Come in!

0:01:400:01:41

-Ah!

-Oh, hello, Jack. Hello, Salty!

0:01:410:01:46

How lovely to see you. I was just on my way out.

0:01:460:01:49

Hello, Miss Bowline-Hitch.

0:01:490:01:51

We're checking you're all right after last night.

0:01:510:01:54

-Yes! Wasn't it windy?

-Wasn't it, eh? That old wind was howling worse

0:01:540:01:58

than she does when she wants her dinner.

0:01:580:02:01

It whipped away my favourite scarf

0:02:010:02:03

and wound it down the road before I could do a thing about it.

0:02:030:02:07

-Oh, dear!

-I've been looking for it all night. You haven't seen it?

0:02:070:02:11

It's dark blue silk with little golden sequined stars.

0:02:110:02:16

No, we haven't.

0:02:160:02:17

-We'll keep an eye out for it, won't we, Salty?

-Thank you.

0:02:170:02:21

-PHONE RINGS Oh, I'm in demand.

-Oh, yes.

0:02:210:02:24

-Better get going. Busy, busy, busy.

-Oh, yes. Busy, busy. Come on, then.

0:02:240:02:29

Come on, Salty. Good girl. That's it. Come on, then.

0:02:290:02:33

Hello, somebody's started work early.

0:02:410:02:44

Hiya, Jack. Salty. Where are you off to?

0:02:440:02:46

To The Rainbow to clear some of them cobwebs away,

0:02:460:02:50

if the wind hasn't done it already.

0:02:500:02:53

-Are you...?

-Feeling all right?

-No.

-Flying a kite?

-No, no. Fishing?

0:02:530:02:57

Oh! Oh, yes. For my keys.

0:02:570:03:00

I was fixing this life ring back on, it kept blowing off,

0:03:000:03:04

but then I dropped my keys!

0:03:040:03:06

They've landed down there in a rock pool. Typical!

0:03:060:03:09

-Lucky I've go my bamboo contraption with me.

-I like the sound of that.

0:03:090:03:13

It's a nifty bit of kit.

0:03:130:03:15

Basically, a bamboo pole with a bit of string and a hook in the end.

0:03:150:03:20

-I invented it myself. I call it...

-A fishing rod.

-Well, yes.

0:03:200:03:25

-I suppose it is, really.

-Listen, can we help at all?

0:03:250:03:28

Thanks for offering, but I'll be fine.

0:03:280:03:31

Right. I'll see you later. Happy fishing.

0:03:310:03:34

-Come on, Salty. Round here.

-See you, Jack.

-Bye-bye.

0:03:340:03:37

JACK LAUGHS

0:03:370:03:39

There she is! The Rainbow!

0:03:500:03:53

What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:03:530:03:56

BOAT HORN BLARES

0:03:560:03:58

-HE CHUCKLES

-Come on, Salty.

0:03:580:04:01

-HE HUMS

-Here we are.

0:04:010:04:04

Good girl. Go in your bed. Go on. That's it, you curl up in there

0:04:130:04:18

while I get rid of some of these cobwebs. I don't know.

0:04:180:04:21

Oh. Look at those keys there.

0:04:210:04:26

I hope Sam manages to fish out those keys.

0:04:260:04:30

You know, keys aren't the sort of thing you usually go fishing for

0:04:300:04:34

and yet I remember once we had to go fishing

0:04:340:04:39

for something even more unusual.

0:04:390:04:42

Yes. Yes, once upon a twinkly time,

0:04:420:04:46

The Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:460:04:49

waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:490:04:53

When night fell, I gazed around me.

0:04:550:04:58

"What a beautiful planet we live on," I said.

0:04:580:05:01

I think this calls for a sing-song.

0:05:010:05:04

# Just Salty Dog and me

0:05:050:05:07

# Upon the briny sea

0:05:070:05:09

# There's no other place we'd rather be

0:05:090:05:11

# When the stars are bright and twinkly

0:05:110:05:14

# We're like two giddy kippers beneath the Big Dipper

0:05:140:05:18

# Just Salty Dog and me! #

0:05:180:05:21

Good girl.

0:05:210:05:23

All that singing made us hungry,

0:05:230:05:25

so out came the cheese sandwiches and the jam tarts.

0:05:250:05:29

Ooh, our favourites! Not for Salty, though. Dog biscuits for her.

0:05:290:05:33

And just then,

0:05:330:05:35

I noticed a star that twinkled brighter than all the others.

0:05:350:05:39

"Look, Salty! That's the brightest star in the sky," I said.

0:05:390:05:43

"And guess what it's called. Sirius, which means the Dog Star."

0:05:430:05:48

Ha-ha! But as we were happily gazing, the wind came

0:05:480:05:52

and it brought the clouds, which covered up the stars.

0:05:520:05:57

"I hope we're not going to have one of those sneaky-uppy storms

0:05:570:06:01

"that come out of nowhere," I said.

0:06:010:06:03

Salty sniffed the air. A storm was coming all right.

0:06:030:06:07

She could feel it in her whiskers.

0:06:070:06:09

And before we could say, "Jiggling jellyfish,"

0:06:090:06:13

the rain came pattering down.

0:06:130:06:15

"Quick, Salty!" I called. "We'd better put away the jam tarts."

0:06:150:06:20

The wind, oh! It was wild! It whistled and howled

0:06:200:06:25

and whipped up the waves as enormous as elephants,

0:06:250:06:29

as tall as tower blocks, as massive as mountains.

0:06:290:06:33

"Hold on tight, Salty! It's a storm," I called.

0:06:330:06:38

I fought with the wheel, but the Rainbow was blown off course

0:06:380:06:42

until I didn't know my beard from my belly button.

0:06:420:06:46

And then, suddenly, we felt a great jolt. Ooh!

0:06:460:06:51

And the Rainbow's bow, it dipped ever so low.

0:06:510:06:55

"Have we hit the rocks?" I cried. "No," said Salty.

0:06:550:06:59

And she nodded towards the bow. "We've got a visitor."

0:06:590:07:04

That's when I noticed a mass of huge suckered arms

0:07:040:07:07

coiled around the boat and two huge eyes staring at me.

0:07:070:07:12

"Uh-oh," said Salty. "It's Charlie the Giant Squid."

0:07:120:07:16

"We can't have a giant squid suckered onto the boat,

0:07:160:07:19

"it'll sink us," I said. "I'm so sorry," said Charlie.

0:07:190:07:24

"But I'm scared of the storm and I always get clingy when I'm scared."

0:07:240:07:29

"That's all we need. A giant clingy thing with arms like spaghetti,"

0:07:290:07:34

whined Salty. And suddenly we felt another huge jolt. Crash!

0:07:340:07:40

"Have we hit the rocks?" I cried.

0:07:410:07:45

"Yes, this time we have," cried Salty.

0:07:450:07:48

"And I think I've grazed my bottom," said Charlie.

0:07:480:07:52

"Sorry about that," I said.

0:07:520:07:54

"Usually, it's the light from a lighthouse that saves us

0:07:540:07:58

"from breaking up on the rocks not a giant squid's bottom!"

0:07:580:08:03

Just then, someone came rushing up to us in a little boat.

0:08:030:08:08

It was being tossed around on the sea like a teacup.

0:08:080:08:12

"Hello," she called. "Are you all right?"

0:08:120:08:15

"Yes, just," says I.

0:08:150:08:18

"But we could have come a cropper on those rocks."

0:08:180:08:22

"Sorry," said the stranger. "I'm the lighthouse keeper

0:08:220:08:26

"and I'm having a bit of bother with my lighthouse lamp."

0:08:260:08:30

"We didn't even see your lighthouse," I said.

0:08:300:08:33

"Oh, I know," said the lighthouse keeper.

0:08:330:08:35

"The bulb has broken and none of the ships can see where the rocks are.

0:08:350:08:40

"It's a disaster."

0:08:400:08:42

A bolt of lightning crackled over the sea and in its brief light,

0:08:420:08:46

we could see a large ship sailing too close to the rocks.

0:08:460:08:51

"Go away," we yelled. "You'll hit the rocks!"

0:08:510:08:55

But our shouts were just lost in the wind.

0:08:550:08:59

"Stay away from the rocks," cried Charlie the Squid,

0:08:590:09:03

waving his arms wildly.

0:09:030:09:05

And then, Salty's whiskers whiffled.

0:09:050:09:08

She was having one of her bright ideas.

0:09:080:09:12

She grabbed my long-handled fishing net and she handed it to Charlie.

0:09:120:09:17

"Here," she woofed. "You've got the longest arms.

0:09:170:09:21

"It's time to go fishing for stars."

0:09:210:09:25

Charlie unwound himself from the boat and using one of his long

0:09:250:09:30

feeding tentacles, he grabbed the net and he stretched up to the sky.

0:09:300:09:36

And fished behind the clouds.

0:09:400:09:43

It was just like a lucky dip.

0:09:430:09:45

"I've caught something," he cried, pulling down the net,

0:09:450:09:50

which was fluttering.

0:09:500:09:52

"Oh, that's not a star," said the lighthouse keeper.

0:09:520:09:55

"It's a seagull."

0:09:550:09:58

"Sorry," said Charlie. And the seagull flew off very cross.

0:09:580:10:03

Well, he tried again.

0:10:030:10:04

And before too long, he'd caught something else -

0:10:040:10:08

all shaped like a diamond, with a long tail.

0:10:080:10:11

"That isn't a star, that's a kite," I said.

0:10:110:10:14

"It's very nice but it isn't very bright."

0:10:140:10:17

Meanwhile, the large ship was getting closer to the rocks.

0:10:170:10:21

"Quick!" cried the lighthouse keeper.

0:10:210:10:24

So Charlie the Squid, he tried again.

0:10:240:10:28

This time, he caught a fabulous dazzling thing.

0:10:300:10:33

It was Sirius, the Dog Star.

0:10:350:10:38

"Golly," I said. "That's a beauty!"

0:10:380:10:41

And Charlie held up the star and it lit up all the rocks all around.

0:10:410:10:47

And now the large ship could see how close it was to the rocks

0:10:470:10:51

and it turned back just in time.

0:10:510:10:54

Ho! "You're a hero," we told Charlie.

0:10:540:10:59

"It was Salty's idea," he said shyly.

0:10:590:11:04

That fabulous giant tentacled beast held up the star for a long

0:11:040:11:10

time while the lighthouse keeper fixed the light.

0:11:100:11:15

"You make a wonderful lighthouse," said the lighthouse keeper.

0:11:150:11:19

So the storm passed and just as the sun was rising,

0:11:190:11:24

we thanked the star and we put it back in the sky.

0:11:240:11:30

"You were amazing," I told Charlie.

0:11:300:11:32

"Let's have a jam tart to celebrate."

0:11:320:11:36

And then off he swam back to the deepest darkest depths of the ocean.

0:11:360:11:41

Well, Salty, that was a picnic to remember, I said. Wasn't it?

0:11:430:11:47

Eh? Ha-ha!

0:11:470:11:49

And we sailed off happily home to Staithes,

0:11:490:11:54

and some more jam tarts. Ho-ho!

0:11:540:11:58

Did you like that story, Salty? All true, of course.

0:12:040:12:08

Mind you, my stories always are. Ho-ho!

0:12:080:12:13

Oh, look.

0:12:130:12:15

Come on.

0:12:160:12:19

Ho-ho-ho!

0:12:240:12:26

Have you caught any keys yet?

0:12:290:12:31

Not yet, Jack. But I've caught plenty of seaweed.

0:12:310:12:35

-Just going to give it another go.

-Right.

0:12:350:12:38

Oh! Wait! Wait...

0:12:380:12:41

-What's that sparkling?

-Oh!

0:12:410:12:44

Oh, you might just be in luck.

0:12:440:12:46

Not sure it's my keys, but it looks like treasure.

0:12:460:12:49

I think I've caught some stars!

0:12:490:12:51

Sequin stars. It's Miss Bowline-Hitch's scarf.

0:12:510:12:55

It's a bit soggy, but still it'll dry out.

0:12:550:12:58

Looks like something's tangled up inside. My keys!

0:12:580:13:03

-Brilliant!

-Ha-ha! That's not a bad morning's fishing.

0:13:030:13:06

We'd better head off and give this back to Miss Bowline-Hitch.

0:13:060:13:11

-She will be tickled...

-With an enormous feather duster.

-No, pink.

0:13:110:13:15

-She'll be tickled pink!

-Good. Well, back to work for me.

0:13:150:13:19

-See you later, then.

-See you soon, Jack.

-Come on, you.

0:13:190:13:23

Well, Salty, that's it today. We'll see all our friends again next time.

0:13:300:13:36

Oh. And we'll see you next time as well.

0:13:360:13:40

Bye-bye!

0:13:400:13:42

Come on, girl.
