if we can stops sending great clouds in the air. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
Here, here, Salty. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
Do you remember the time we had to deal with a great cloud in the air? | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
Yeah, let me tell you that story. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
You'll like this. It involves a moon maiden. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:39
Once upon a twinkly time, we set off from Staithes, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
waved goodbye to Whitby and headed off over the horizon. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
And as we sailed, we sang. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50

# Just Salty Dog and me. # | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Salty and I, we sailed off into the night. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
All we could see was the white foam of the water | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
and the light from a lovely, big, full moon. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
That's it, up there. You see it, yeah. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
"Look at that," I said to Salty. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
"The moonlight's reflected on the water, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
"heading all the way to the horizon, straight as a Roman road." | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
But then Salty barked. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
-Woof! -"Can you see what I see?" | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
I ran to the prow of the boat and stared out into the night. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
There was someone walking towards us, across the sea. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
It was a lady. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
A tall, beautiful lady. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
And then I realised, "Salty, she's not walking on the water, | 0:03:47 | 0:03:54
"she's walking on the moonlight." | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
And that's exactly what she was doing. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
The moonlight twinkled like diamonds in between her toes | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
as she got closer and closer and closer. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
She walked right up to the boat | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
and I could see her clothes were like silk and clouds woven together. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:14
Her hair was filled with stars | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
and her skin was mottled like the moon itself. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
She said "Hello, Jack." | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
I said, "Hello! | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
"But how did you know my name?" | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
She said, "We've been watching you, Jack. And you, Salty. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
"We always watch the adventures of the Rainbow from my home, up there." | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
And she pointed up at the sky. She pointed at the moon. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:43
I said, "The moon? Are you from the moon?" She said, "Indeed. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:50
"I am a moon maiden. Once every full moon, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
"one of the moon people is allowed down to earth to make new friends. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59
"Will you be my friend?" | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
I said, "Yes! Of course! I love making new friends!" | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
"Thank you," said the Moon Maiden. "May I come aboard the Rainbow?" | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
I said, "Oh, yes, it's an honour. Welcome aboard." | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
And the Moon Maiden stepped off the path of moonlight and onto the boat. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:20
But just in that second, a cold wind blew | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
and big dark clouds rolled in front of the moon, blotting it out. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
And the moonlight disappeared too, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
its reflection on the water just twinkled away to nothing. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
And it was gone. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
Suddenly, the Moon Maiden moaned and she looked all faint. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:41
She had to sit down on an old coil of rope. She said, "Oh dear." | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
I said, "What is it, Moon Maiden? What's wrong?" | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
She said, "Oh, Jack, I'm sorry, but I feel pale and weary. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:55
"I've lost the moonlight. And moonlight keeps me strong. | 0:05:55 | 0:06:00
"I should go back home but I can't." I said, "Why not?" | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
"The only way home is to walk along the moonlight | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
"all the way to the horizon, and then it's just a small step up | 0:06:08 | 0:06:13
"back to the moon. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
"But now the clouds had covered the moon so the moonlight path is gone." | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
"Never mind," I said. "You can stay here and wait with me. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
"Then maybe the weather will be better tomorrow night." | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
"No," she said. "I can't wait until tomorrow. As soon as the sun rises, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
"I'll fade away. Oh, Jack, oh, Salty, whatever shall I do?" | 0:06:32 | 0:06:38
And I said, "Don't you worry, Moon Maiden. I'm your friend. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
"That's what you said. Your friend on earth. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
"And friends always help each other. Isn't that right, Salty? | 0:06:44 | 0:06:49
And Salty barked "Yes, yes, yes!" | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
But the Moon Maiden looked up at the night sky. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
It was filled with huge purple and black storm clouds. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:02
She said, "Those clouds are bigger the mountains. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
"You're a very clever man, Jack, but even you can't move the sky." | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
"Oh, is that right?" I said. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
"You just watch me cause if there's one thing I like in this life, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
"it's a challenge. Especially when one of my friends is in trouble." | 0:07:16 | 0:07:21
So I fired up the motor on the Rainbow and we sailed top speed | 0:07:21 | 0:07:27
all the way back to Staithes. "Hold on tight," I said. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
And Salty barked with joy as we zoomed along. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
Faster and faster we went! "Hurry up, Jack," said the Moon Maiden. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
She got paler and paler | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
and the stars in her hair began to disappear. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
The Rainbow sailed up to the village but all the houses were in darkness. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
It was the middle of the night. Everyone was asleep. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
"I can soon wake them up," I said. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
I began to blow on the Rainbow's foghorn. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
It went "Baaaaaaaah," again and again. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
"Baaaaaaah," echoing across the night! | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
"Baaaaaah!" And Salty began to bark, "Woo-woo-woo-woof!" | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
And I sounded the foghorn again and again, "Baaaaaa! | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
"Baaaaa!" "Wooo-woof!" Lights came on, windows lit up, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
sleepy faces appeared round doorways. Well, I kept going. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
"Baaaaaaaa!" | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
Jack! You old nuisance. Be quiet! | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
-We're trying to sleep. -..said Miss Bowline-Hitch. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
But I shouted out, "I need your help! | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
-"Or this poor lady will fade away!" -What are we supposed to do? | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
..called Shelly. I shouted out, "I need you to blow, | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
"I need you to huff and puff and blow with all your might. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
"I want you to blow into the air | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
"because if we blow together we might be able to move those clouds." | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
-Don't be daft! -That won't work! | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
This sounds like one of your tall tales, Jack. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
"No, no, it's true," I said. | 0:08:58 | 0:08:59
"We need to move those clouds and find the moon | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
"so this poor Moon Maiden can walk on the moonlight. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
"Please, please help me! Oh, please. You've got to believe me!" | 0:09:06 | 0:09:11
And then...one little voice said: | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
I believe you. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
It was Pip, the tailor's son, bright red hair, still wearing his pyjamas. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:23
But he was the bravest lad I've ever seen. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
As he lifted his face up to the sky, took a deep breath and blew. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:33
-And then his sister, Olive, she said: -I can do that. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
And she started blowing, too. She went "Whhhhhhhhhhh!" | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
And Pip went "Whhhhhhhhhh!" | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
And then all the children began to join in. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
They all faced the sky and took a deep breath in and then blew out | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
with a great big whhhhhhhh, | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
again and again they went. "Whhhhhhhh!" | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
"That's it," I said. "Keep blowing!" | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
And then one of the grown-ups said, "Let's help." | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
And they all began to join in. Everyone blew. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
The mums, dads, shopkeepers, the schoolteacher, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
the lollipop lady, Ernie, Emily, Sam, Shelly | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
and Miss Bowline-Hitch, all of them blowing into the night sky. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
And I was blowing too, whhhhh! And Salty - "Whhhhhhhh!" | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
We all went "Whhhhhhh!" | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
And then the clouds began to move. "More!" I shouted, "More!" | 0:10:32 | 0:10:39
And now the whole village lined up on the shore | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
and everybody went "Whhhhhh!" | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
And the Moon Maiden cried out, "It's working!" | 0:10:44 | 0:10:49
Slowly, the huge clouds rolled back | 0:10:49 | 0:10:54
and the whole village kept going, "Whhhhhhh, whhhhhhhh!" | 0:10:54 | 0:10:59
And then the curve of the moon appeared | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
and we all blew some more until the final clouds rolled away | 0:11:03 | 0:11:08
and there was the full moon shining in the sky. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:13
And the moonlight appeared on the water like a glittery road, | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
heading towards the horizon. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
"My way home," said the Moon Maiden, | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
with tears of joy in her eyes. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
And then everyone in the village clapped and cheered. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:30
"Yay, yay!" And the Moon Maiden turned to face all of us. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:36
"I will never forget this," she said. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
"You are the best friends I could ever hope to make." | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
Then she stepped over the edge of the boat | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
and onto the moonlight path. She looked back one last time. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:52
"Goodbye, Jack," she said. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
"And remember, whenever the moon is in the sky, | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
"that means I am looking down and watching you. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
"And I will always keep you safe." | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
"Thank you, Moon Maiden," I said. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
"Bye-bye." | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
And then I watched and Salty watched | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
and the whole village watched from the shore | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
as the beautiful Moon Maiden walked over the water, | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
along the twinkling path of moonlight, | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
towards the horizon, | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
until she was gone. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
I've never seen her since that day. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
But every night, when we sail out to sea, Salty and I, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
we look up, because we know there's not just a man in the moon, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:40
but a beautiful maiden too. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
You look up tonight, you might see her. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
FOGHORN BLARES | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
Oh, right. I better get back to that old boiler valve. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
-FOGHORN BLARES -Yes, all right. Oh, dear. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
-Oh, you're back soon, Sam. -Yes, Jack's still using my tools. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:08
FOGHORN BLARES | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
He'll be working on the boiler for a while. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
So how about some fish? What can I do you for? | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
I think I'll have a nice piece of... FOGHORN DROWNS HER OUT | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
-..for my dinner. -A nice piece of what? | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
A nice piece of... FOGHORN DROWNS HER OUT | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
-What was that? -A nice piece of... FOGHORN DROWNS HER OUT | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
BOTH: Jack! | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
What? Was that somebody calling, Salty? No? | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
FOGHORN BLARES | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
-This could take a very long... -FOGHORN DROWNS HIM OUT | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
A very long what? | 0:13:45 | 0:13:46
-I said, a very long... -FOGHORN DROWNS HIM OUT | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
