Hello, you two. I'm just finishing off my latest creation.

It's a summer fruits mousse.

That looks delicious.

Hello, Salty, what have you got there?

Ah, it's her favourite ball. She wanted to bring it out to play.

-I used to be a really good thrower - best in my school.

-Really?

Right - here goes!

This is a nice ball. What? Do you want me to throw it for you? OK.

Oh, dear! My summer mousse has turned into a big blobby mess.

-I'm sorry, Shelly.

-Don't worry, Salty, it's not your fault.

-I'm sure I can do something with it.

I just don't know what yet.

We'd better get out of the way. We've caused enough trouble.

Here we are.

There we go, go on, in your bed.

That's it, you curl up in there with that ball of yours.

Ohhh! The last time we played with that ball, it got us into trouble.

Do you remember?

Let me get comfortable, and I'll tell you the story.

Once upon a twinkly time, we set off from Staithes,

waved goodbye to Whitby

and disappeared over the horizon.

And as we sailed, we played ball.

Ha, ha! And we sang. Way!

# Upon the briny sea

# Making the most of the cloudless skies

# Taking a wee bit of exercise

# We're bending and stretching and throwing and fetching

# Just Salty Dog and me. #

Ha! So there we were, happily playing ball when who should we see

approaching but Kitty Cutlass, the trickiest pirate to sail the seas.

We asked her if she wanted to play and threw her Salty's ball.

"No," said Kitty, "I hate playing ball!"

And the cheeky pirate tossed Salty's ball into the sea!

"Raaaaaarrrrh!" whined Salty, while we ran to the edge of the boat

and we looked down, but there was no sign of Salty's ball.

As Salty and I stared at the waves,

up it popped on the crown of the oddest-looking fish I'd ever seen!

It was like a big strawberry mousse,

with eyes!

"Hello, I am a blob fish. Is that your ball?" it asked.

"Yes," we said. And we thanked the blob fish for rescuing it.

"Ohhh, please don't thank me.

"All blob fish love playing ball.

"It's our favourite thing in the world. Here, you have it back."

And the blob fish flipped the ball into the air, high over the boat

and Salty caught it in her mouth.

"Nice catch," said the blob fish.

Well, after that, Salty and the blob fish played catch for hours.

The blob fish had the time of his life.

Eventually, they stopped when Salty started to worry about hot paws.

"That was brilliant," said the blob fish.

"I've never had so much fun.

I'm all alone at the moment,

"and you can't play ball easily when you're alone."

I asked where all the other blob fish were.

"They've gone on holiday, but I'm the prince of blob fish

"so I have to stay here and look after my palace.

"If I had a princess to marry,

"I could play ball at home all the time, but I don't,"

he said sadly.

Well, Salty liked the idea of seeing his palace, even if

we couldn't provide a princess.

"Oh great, come with me to the bottom of the sea

"and I'll show you my kingdom," said the blob fish.

"I'm coming too," said Kitty.

So, before you could say "galloping seahorses", we were under the waves.

After a long walk,

we eventually came to the blob fish prince's palace.

Oh, it was very beautiful.

There was a huge table, all set out with silver cups and plates.

"Let's have another game of ball," said the blob fish.

"Then we can eat jam tarts."

"Forget about playing ball, let's just eat!" said Kitty.

So, the blob fish blew magical bubbles over the table

and piles and piles of jam tarts appeared!

"Did you see how the snacks appeared out of nowhere?" said Kitty,

grabbing the jam tarts and scoffing them rather rudely.

"I think that blob fish is a magic fish. I bet if you kiss it, Salty,

"he will turn into a handsome prince who will give you lots of jewels."

"I am not a blob-fish-kissing sort of dog," said Salty.

"You kiss him!" "All right," said Kitty,

who was dreaming of jewels and palaces.

So before the blob fish could say, "Ugh, get off me!"

she gave him a huge sloppy kiss.

And suddenly there was a "kerpow!"

When the bubbles had cleared, Kitty was gone.

Instead, there were two blob fish and one was wearing a pirate hat!

Kitty Cutlass had turned into a blob fish.

"Oh, dear," the blob fish groaned,

"Now that you've kissed me, you have to marry me and be my princess.

"I was hoping I'd get a princess who wanted to play ball,

"but not a jam-tart-scoffing pirate."

Kitty wasn't pleased either.

"Help me," she whispered.

"I don't want to be a princess blob fish and I don't want to play ball."

"There's only one way to break the spell," said the blob fish.

"Someone else must kiss me, promise to marry me and become my princess."

So, Salty and I decided to go and find a princess for the blob fish.

"Make it quick!" cried Kitty.

"Would you like to play ball?" asked the blob fish.

"Not really," Kitty sighed.

But what else could she do?

She was a blob fish now and blob fish love playing ball.

Meanwhile, Salty and I wandered around thinking of how we'd find

a princess for the blob fish.

Suddenly, Salty's whiskers started to wobble.

She was having one of her bright ideas.

She scampered back to the palace, where Kitty

and Prince Blob Fish were sat with grumpy expressions.

"I'm not playing any more," said Kitty.

"I don't want a princess who won't play ball," said Prince Blob Fish.

"But Salty's had an idea," I said. "Come on!"

So, Salty led us all back to the Rainbow.

Kitty and the blob fish waited in the waves

while Salty and I went on deck.

Now Salty ran and fetched her ball.

"This is no time to play ball!" I said.

But Salty, she then did a very clever thing...

She tossed the ball into the Rainbow's funnel,

pulled the steam whistle's string

and with an enormous "pop-pop", the ball shot up high into the sky.

It went so high everybody could see it for miles around.

And far away, out at sea,

who do you think saw it?

Yes, it was another blob fish.

She came rushing over.

"You are a very clever dog, Salty," I said,

"you remembered that a blob fish can't resist a ball."

"Hello, you're lovely," said Prince Blob Fish.

"Will you be my princess and play ball with me?"

"Yes, please," said the new blob fish.

She was so excited, she gave Prince Blob Fish a kiss.

There was an enormous "kerpow".

And the spell was broken.

Suddenly, Kitty Cutlass was beside us again!

"Thank you for finding me such a lovely princess,"

cried Prince Blob Fish.

"And thank you for finding me such a lovely prince!"

cried Princess Blob Fish.

And they disappeared into the waves

to play ball together.

"You are a hero for saving me, Salty," said Kitty.

She was just about to give Salty a kiss but she stopped.

"I'll be careful with my kisses in future," she said.

We all chuckled.

I said, "I think that's enough excitement for one day!"

So we set our course for Staithes and home.

Ha! Made a lovely couple, those blob fish, you know.

Yeah, we've been invited to the wedding.

Hm... More jam tarts.
