Ah, hello there. I'm Old Jack and this is Salty. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:26
Salty loves living here with me, and she often has adventures of her own. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:32
So, are you sitting comfortably? Good. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
Then I'll tell you one of Salty's waggy tales. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Once upon a twinkly time, Salty had a toy rabbit called Squidgy. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
It was a very special rabbit. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
She paraded it all over Staithes, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
holding it proudly in her mouth, the way dogs do. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
One particular Sunday, Salty suddenly thought, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
"I haven't seen Squidgy for a while. I wonder where he is." | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
So, she decided to go and look for him. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
Squidgy wasn't by the lobster pots. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
Squidgy wasn't at the top of the big steps. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
And Squidgy wasn't on her favourite old rug outside Shelly's cafe. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:21
And then Salty remembered. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
She'd left Squidgy in one of the fishing boats. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
So, Salty dashed along the harbour side | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
and over to where the boats lie waiting for the tide to come in. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
And sure enough, there was Squidgy. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
She carefully picked him up and had a little think. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
A boat wasn't a very safe place to keep her favourite toy rabbit. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:47
A fisherman could come along at any moment | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
and take the boat far, far out to sea, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
and her lovely, squidgy rabbit could be lost for ever. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
There was no time to lose. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Salty needed to find a safe place to keep Squidgy. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
Ha-ha, and she already had a very clever plan. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
She trotted further onto the beach. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
She sniffed around for a while until she found a good spot. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
And then she started to dig. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
She dug a hole large enough to put Squidgy in. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
Then, she popped the rabbit neatly in the hole | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
and carefully pushed the sand back. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
The ears stuck out a tiny bit so that she would be able to find it again. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
It was perfect! | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Salty then went to have a nap outside the Mermaid Cafe. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
And when she woke up, she heard a familiar sound. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
It was the sound of the sea whispering against the harbour wall, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
swish, swash, swish. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
She liked that sound. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
It made her want to jump around and play. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
And she wanted to play with Squidgy. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
But then Salty went down to the beach and made an awful discovery. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
There was no beach! | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
The tide had come in and the mighty sea | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
lay like a huge, green blanket over the harbour. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
Salty's rabbit was underneath the water somewhere, in a sandy hole. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:25
Ha-ha! | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
And what did Salty do? | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Bing! She had one of her bright ideas. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
She decided she needed to have a word with the sea. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:38
Now, Salty knew that you must always treat the sea | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
with a lot of respect, because it can change its mood very quickly. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
So, she woofed one of her politest woofs. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
Luckily for Salty, the sea was feeling in a good mood today | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57
and it heard the polite woof. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
And with a huge, lazy roll it reached down, picked out Squidgy, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:07
and flopped him on the little piece of sand by the harbour wall. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
Ha! Salty was thrilled. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
She barked a happy, woofy "thank you" | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
and raced down to the water's edge to pick up her Squidgy. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
Then, holding on to it tight, she dashed back up the steps | 0:04:21 | 0:04:26
and all the way back home to The Rainbow. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
And when Squidgy was washed and dried, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
Salty carefully put him in the safest place she knew. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:38
Her own basket. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:39
Ha-ha! | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
Clever Salty. She's the best dog in the world. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44 |
