-I'm Mael Davies. I'm 19 years old

-and I'm from Newcastle Emlyn.

-I play for Swansea U23s.

-First, Mael, how's life

-with Swansea going for you?

-It's going quite well.

-I've taken the step up

-from playing U18 to U23.

-I'm starting to play games.

-We gained promotion last season.

-We're playing against

-the best teams in the Premiership...

-..Chelsea, Arsenal.

-To be fair, we're getting

-good results against them.

-Not just good results but victories.

-That shows that

-something's going right in Swansea.

-We know what we want to do.

-We're not playing these teams

-hoping to win a point.

-We want three points,

-we want to win games.

-To be fair to the boys,

-we're fifth in the league.

-We're doing very well.

-We're getting a lot of chances

-with the first team players.

-From the outside, for everyone

-Yes. I've been playing football

-since I was four years old.

-I was with Cardiff between

-the ages of nine and sixteen.

-I signed for Swansea when I was 16.

-I had a two-year scholarship...

-..and then I signed a professional

-contract at the end of last season.

-I've been playing up with the U23s.

-I hope...

-You can make that giant leap.

-Did you get any stick here

-coming from Cardiff?

-Um, no. Just a few jokes

-between the players.

-I'm here now, enjoying myself.

-It's all good.

-Your parents have sacrificed a lot

-to get you where you are now.

-They must be chuffed to bits

-They're very proud of you.

-They watch every game they can.

-If I've played well, they enjoy it.

-I go home after every game

-because we have a day off.

-I played when I was

-5, 6 years old for the U9s.

-Who's your greatest critic,

-Mam or Dad?

-Mam probably.

-No, they both help me

-every step of the way.

-There must be an ambition to play

-for Wales eventually.

-I hope so.

-I've had a couple of trials

-with them but I haven't got in yet.

-If I continue to play with the U23s,

-I hope I get a chance.

-Even if I don't get

-another contract with Swansea...

-I'll keep play well all the time.

-Mael is an unusual name, a Celtic

-name. Is there a story behind it?

-I'm not sure.

-It was special. Three of them

-Dan, Adnan and Connor started.

-What's the size of your academy?

-What's the scale of everything?

-Where do you search for players?

-We start at U6 at the moment.

-We have a pre-academy at U6 and U8.

-About 200 children

-come through at that age.

-At U9, they start with the academy,

-from U9 up to U23.

-We have about 15 development centres

-in South Wales.

-At least 1,500 are included there.

-The staff we have,

-the whole set-up is massive.

-Just to get that one percent.

-How did you celebrate

-when you saw the boys on the pitch?

-Me and my son, Llew, were jumping up

-and down in the kitchen last night.

-Once the boys were on, it was great.

-My wife also loves football.

-She had very little choice.

-It was great to see them.

-female in the Swansea set-up.

-It helps get the basics going.

-It doesn't feel like a job.

-It's my hobby and I do it every day.

-Recently, I met up with her.

-Can you tell us about the accident

-and how serious it was?

-It was just a normal night, driving

-to see a friend play in a band.

-It was raining and the weather

-steered me off the road.

-I ended up hitting a tree...

-..which resulted

-in a serious injury to my back...

-..which was three breaks

-and one of them being unstable.

-I was advised to have surgery

-and put two rods and four screws in.

-You don't hear of players

-coming from such a serious injury.

-I was a bit nervous.

-My family were there every day.

-Friends were coming up,

-I had a close friend come up...

-..to give me a shirt from the Welsh

-squad, signed by all the players...

-..and signed by Jayne herself,

-which was a really nice touch.

-Without that support, I don't think

-I would have got through.

-You hear of athletes

-suffering serious injuries.

-They've got the support around them.

-What was it like

-for you as an amateur player...

-..and not having

-the luxuries professionals have?

-It was hard. I took a long time

-out of football before coming back.

-The support off my family...

-..and especially Ian who's now my

-current coach at Swansea Ladies...

-..he's been phenomenal, always

-really supportive through the years.

-Off those guys and especially

-the medical team at Swansea...

-..I wouldn't be back

-playing football.

-October 2017, against Caernarfon,

-you made your return with the Swans.

-What was that like,

-stepping on to the pitch?

-A mixture of emotions, really.

-There wasn't really a big crowd

-there but there was a cheer.

-It was funny in a way

-but bittersweet as well.

-It was emotional coming on and

-all the girls were giving me hugs.

-I just felt like

-it was a proud moment.

-The Swans Ladies season so far...

-..hasn't gone as well

-as you guys would have hoped...

-..but you're still pushing

-for that Champions League spot.

-Last league game we played

-was against Cardiff Met.

-It's a big game to be involved in

-or be a part of.

-Unfortunately, we didn't get

-the result we wanted.

-We can still push for that Champions

-League spot, Ian believes we can.

-We need to get back to those

-winning ways and push until the end.
