I'm Stacey Dooley,

0:00:020:00:03

and Show Me What You're Made Of is back in Africa.

0:00:030:00:05

This has got one of the fastest-growing economies

0:00:050:00:08

in the world.

0:00:080:00:09

It's the perfect place for our five to get to grips with some real work.

0:00:090:00:13

Much of what we use at home starts life right here.

0:00:130:00:16

You make it look so easy.

0:00:160:00:18

From chocolate to gold, peanuts to pineapples,

0:00:180:00:22

not to mention most of the world's bling.

0:00:220:00:25

This is worth millions and millions.

0:00:250:00:28

Whoa!

0:00:280:00:29

Our five pampered kids are making their way across Africa,

0:00:290:00:32

to find out first-hand the hard work

0:00:320:00:35

that goes into making some of their favourite things.

0:00:350:00:38

-Nice and quick, girls.

-Ooh, urgh!

-Argh!

0:00:380:00:42

But what happens when they have to work in the farms...

0:00:420:00:45

Emily, quickly!

0:00:450:00:47

..mines and factories of this tough continent?

0:00:470:00:50

-I'm trying my best.

-Are you trying your best? I don't think you are.

0:00:500:00:53

I'm off.

0:00:530:00:54

Can they win over demanding bosses?

0:00:540:00:56

First task, this is how it is here.

0:00:560:00:59

I'm so sorry!

0:01:020:01:04

Will they handle the hardship?

0:01:040:01:06

Do people live here?

0:01:060:01:08

Yes, people live here.

0:01:080:01:10

Oh, my God, there's cows coming towards us.

0:01:100:01:13

Or could real-life Africa be too much for them?

0:01:130:01:16

-What do I do with it?

-You put it here, you put it here.

0:01:160:01:19

-SHE SNIFFLES

-What are you crying for?

0:01:190:01:22

Let's meet our five kids.

0:01:270:01:28

They are bossy boots Emily...

0:01:280:01:31

I don't actually always get my own way...

0:01:310:01:34

Actually, that's a lie. Yeah, I think I do.

0:01:340:01:36

..mirror man Rob...

0:01:360:01:37

My favourite thing about myself is my hair.

0:01:370:01:40

..country lass Kathryn...

0:01:400:01:42

There's really not much here apart from cows, sheep, animals.

0:01:420:01:47

..games boy Ed...

0:01:470:01:48

When I do go outside, it's because my dad dragged me outside.

0:01:480:01:53

..and selfie queen Jasmine.

0:01:530:01:54

I'm really vain.

0:01:540:01:56

We've flown 3,000 miles from the UK to Ghana in West Africa,

0:01:560:02:01

and today our kids start work on a remote cocoa farm in Suhum,

0:02:010:02:05

where they'll find out where chocolate really comes from.

0:02:050:02:08

I didn't think it growed on trees, though.

0:02:080:02:10

Even though we Brits spend almost £4 billion a year on chocolate,

0:02:110:02:15

not many people know that nearly all of it

0:02:150:02:17

begins life in West Africa.

0:02:170:02:19

Surprised, really.

0:02:190:02:20

How will they handle their first taste of the African bush?

0:02:200:02:23

Argh! What is that?

0:02:230:02:25

Can they cope in a place where not only the work is hard...

0:02:260:02:29

Need to get a move on!

0:02:290:02:31

..but just getting there is a real challenge, too?

0:02:320:02:34

-I'm not liking this. ALL:

-Whoa!

0:02:340:02:37

So, we're here!

0:02:430:02:44

Our first day in Ghana and it's so exciting.

0:02:440:02:47

Everyone's just packing up.

0:02:470:02:48

We're getting ready to go to our first location

0:02:480:02:50

and we're having to bring everything.

0:02:500:02:52

I don't think the kids quite realise just how basic

0:02:520:02:55

and how remote it's going to be.

0:02:550:02:56

So we've got pillows, we've got buckets,

0:02:560:02:59

we've got all our food.

0:02:590:03:00

If you look closely, there's some eggs sitting on the front seat.

0:03:000:03:04

We've even had to bring our own toilet.

0:03:040:03:07

I think the kids are going to be in for a huge surprise.

0:03:070:03:10

The kids are now leaving the comfort of their four-star hotel

0:03:130:03:16

to head deep into the African bush.

0:03:160:03:18

So, good news, the portaloo has just turned up.

0:03:200:03:24

I don't know whether or not you can see it.

0:03:240:03:26

It's that huge green rectangle with the yellow lid.

0:03:260:03:30

I don't think they realise it's coming with us.

0:03:300:03:33

Yes, I'm taking them to the

0:03:330:03:34

sort of place you have to bring your own toilet.

0:03:340:03:37

As we begin our epic journey north,

0:03:410:03:43

our kids get the distinct impression they're being followed.

0:03:430:03:47

Emily, what do you reckon?

0:03:470:03:48

Oh, my God. If there's a portaloo, then that obviously means that

0:03:480:03:53

we're going somewhere with no loos.

0:03:530:03:55

And that means that it must be like a mud hole or something.

0:03:560:04:00

But it's not just the portaloo that's unsettling everyone.

0:04:000:04:03

Our five are realising they're very far from home.

0:04:030:04:07

I'm feeling very overwhelmed by everything.

0:04:070:04:10

Jasmine, your first time abroad,

0:04:100:04:12

so you've really don't know what to expect, I'd imagine.

0:04:120:04:16

No, I know it's going to be different,

0:04:160:04:19

a lot different from home.

0:04:190:04:21

I don't really like having mud all over me.

0:04:210:04:24

Especially with that porta potty back there, I'm not liking that.

0:04:240:04:30

As tarmac gives way to dirt road,

0:04:320:04:34

our long journey isn't even over yet,

0:04:340:04:36

so were forced to stop for the night

0:04:360:04:38

before reaching our final destination in the morning.

0:04:380:04:41

So we're here, we've made it to the hotel.

0:04:410:04:43

Me, the kids and our loo are all in one piece.

0:04:430:04:47

You know, some of the kids spoke of feeling quite overwhelmed,

0:04:470:04:50

and that's understandable,

0:04:500:04:51

everything they're seeing is just so different

0:04:510:04:53

to what they're used to back home,

0:04:530:04:55

so it does feel like we've been on a bit of an adventure already

0:04:550:04:58

and they haven't even started the work yet.

0:04:580:05:01

This hotel is the best accommodation for miles,

0:05:010:05:04

but who knew, it's not quite up to our kids' four-star standards.

0:05:040:05:08

I'm not impressed, it's really disgusting.

0:05:080:05:11

To start with...that.

0:05:110:05:15

It's not even clean.

0:05:160:05:17

If you look up at the lights,

0:05:170:05:19

it looks as if they're about to fall off.

0:05:190:05:22

Cupboards here, the wardrobes...

0:05:220:05:26

What even is that?

0:05:270:05:29

13-year-old Emily from Sussex has no problem voicing her opinion.

0:05:300:05:35

Emily speaks her mind all the time.

0:05:350:05:37

If there's something wrong and I feel it strong, I will say it.

0:05:370:05:40

Sometimes it can come across as rude.

0:05:400:05:42

And words aren't the only way Emily likes to express herself.

0:05:440:05:47

She loves clothes.

0:05:470:05:49

I love my fashion. I'd say I'm a fashionista as well.

0:05:490:05:52

Like even if I'm walking the dogs, I'll have to have my hair all nice

0:05:520:05:56

and everything.

0:05:560:05:57

But she's not keen on paying for the clothes herself.

0:05:570:06:00

Emily asks for things all the time.

0:06:000:06:03

I don't actually always get my own way.

0:06:030:06:05

Whatever it is, wherever she's going,

0:06:050:06:07

she always needs something new.

0:06:070:06:08

Actually, that's a lie. Yeah, I think I do.

0:06:080:06:11

Emily's mum is hoping the trip will give her a bit of a jolt.

0:06:110:06:14

I would like Emily to come back and to really appreciate everything

0:06:140:06:18

that she's got and to not want more all the time.

0:06:180:06:21

Back in Africa, I go to find out what's got the kids

0:06:230:06:26

so het up about our hotel.

0:06:260:06:28

You all right, guys?

0:06:280:06:29

-Hi.

-Hi.

-Did you lot want to speak to me about something?

0:06:290:06:33

Yeah, we were hoping to change rooms.

0:06:330:06:36

We wanted to see if we could change rooms.

0:06:360:06:38

Just cos the room is just disgusting.

0:06:380:06:41

Actually, this is really comfortable for a lot of people here

0:06:410:06:45

and you're going to be staying in places far more remote

0:06:450:06:47

and basic than this.

0:06:470:06:49

This is as good as it gets here.

0:06:490:06:50

What, so this is the nicest place we're going to stay?

0:06:520:06:55

-Probably.

-Ah!

0:06:550:06:57

You've got to toughen up. This is going to be a hard couple of weeks.

0:06:570:07:00

Our kids are already struggling with Africa,

0:07:020:07:05

but if they think this is basic, they're in for a shock tomorrow.

0:07:050:07:08

The next morning, and everyone is feeling more at home.

0:07:160:07:19

Our kids are just having a bit of breakfast before we set off

0:07:200:07:23

and I'm just hoping it's not the calm before the storm.

0:07:230:07:26

Our convoy sets off from the hotel

0:07:300:07:32

and heads deeper into the African countryside...

0:07:320:07:35

But, as we approach our final destination,

0:07:370:07:39

it seems things might be going downhill again.

0:07:390:07:42

-Oh, my God.

-I'm not liking this.

0:07:420:07:44

-ALL:

-Whoa!

-Oh, my God!

0:07:440:07:46

Heavy rain overnight means

0:07:490:07:51

getting our bus up the hill is proving impossible.

0:07:510:07:54

Honestly.

0:07:570:07:59

Without a bus, car or even a bike in sight,

0:07:590:08:01

our only option is to walk...

0:08:010:08:03

Eurgh.

0:08:030:08:04

..which gives me the perfect opportunity

0:08:060:08:08

to finally reveal what the kids' first day of work will entail.

0:08:080:08:12

Us Brits love chocolate, and a lot of it starts here.

0:08:120:08:15

In fact, Ghana is fast becoming the largest exporter of cocoa

0:08:150:08:19

in the world,

0:08:190:08:20

and today you lot are going to be working on a cocoa farm.

0:08:200:08:23

-ALL:

-Whoa!

0:08:230:08:25

Cocoa is the pride and joy of Ghana, it's their most important export.

0:08:260:08:31

This small country produces a fifth of the world's supply.

0:08:310:08:34

Without their cocoa, there's no chocolate for us.

0:08:340:08:37

They even call it Ghana's brown gold.

0:08:370:08:40

Perfect.

0:08:410:08:42

The cocoa beans grown on this farm are top quality.

0:08:440:08:47

The beans go straight to Europe, and the money it brings in

0:08:470:08:49

supports this whole village.

0:08:490:08:51

So today the entire community wants to meet our kids

0:08:510:08:54

before letting them work with their precious crop.

0:08:540:08:57

These people are waiting for you.

0:08:570:09:00

But first, the kids must meet their boss.

0:09:000:09:03

-Hello.

-Hello.

0:09:030:09:04

-Yayra.

-Hey, how are you doing?

0:09:040:09:05

How do you do?

0:09:050:09:06

Guys, this is Yayra, he's the cocoa exporter,

0:09:060:09:09

and Samuel owns this cocoa farm.

0:09:090:09:11

And these are just the first of many introductions.

0:09:130:09:17

-SPEAKS IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE

-..cocoa farmer.

0:09:170:09:20

SPEAKS IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE ..cocoa farmer.

0:09:200:09:23

-SPEAKS IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE

-...cocoa farmer.

0:09:230:09:27

-SPEAKS IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE

-..cocoa farmer.

0:09:280:09:31

THEY CHEER

0:09:310:09:34

Ghana is so proud of its cocoa, it even has its own chant.

0:09:340:09:38

-Ghana. ALL:

-Cocoa.

0:09:380:09:40

-Ghana. ALL:

-Cocoa.

0:09:400:09:41

-Cocoa. ALL:

-Ghana.

0:09:410:09:43

And it's the first thing our kids must learn.

0:09:430:09:46

-Cocoa.

-ALL:

-Ghana.

0:09:460:09:48

-Ghana.

-ALL:

-Cocoa.

0:09:480:09:50

-Cocoa. ALL:

-Ghana.

0:09:500:09:52

-Ghana. ALL:

-Cocoa.

0:09:520:09:54

Having shown the farmers they're serious,

0:09:540:09:56

our kids get the stamp of approval from the village

0:09:560:09:59

and can finally get down to business.

0:09:590:10:01

You know where chocolate comes from?

0:10:010:10:02

-Cadbury's?

-Have you ever seen a cocoa bean?

0:10:020:10:05

-That's a cocoa bean.

-So that's a cocoa bean?

0:10:060:10:09

You know what?

0:10:110:10:12

-This is where chocolate comes from.

-This is where chocolate comes from.

0:10:120:10:16

'Those cocoa beans grow in big, yellow pods.

0:10:160:10:19

'Yayra has decided to put the kids

0:10:190:10:21

'to work deep in the cocoa plantation,

0:10:210:10:24

'where the pods are ready for picking.'

0:10:240:10:26

Samuel is going to demonstrate to you

0:10:260:10:28

what he has been doing here every day.

0:10:280:10:31

It is no easy task.

0:10:310:10:33

It is really hard work.

0:10:330:10:35

'At harvest time, the average farmer picks 200 pods an hour.

0:10:360:10:41

'And today, our kids' job is to pick half of that.'

0:10:410:10:43

OK, so we are here to work.

0:10:430:10:45

You've got one hour, you've got to get 100 pods each.

0:10:450:10:47

Don't forget, you've got your two bosses here,

0:10:470:10:50

they are going to be watching you every single step of the way.

0:10:500:10:52

-They mean business.

-Right.

0:10:520:10:54

-So, you're focused, yeah?

-KIDS:

-Yeah.

0:10:540:10:56

-Cool.

-Cocoa!

0:10:560:10:58

-KIDS:

-Ghana!

-Ghana!

0:10:580:10:59

-KIDS:

-Cocoa!

-Let's go.

0:10:590:11:01

'They've got an hour to pick 100 pods, so they must be quick,

0:11:040:11:08

'but also pace themselves.

0:11:080:11:10

'Temperatures can soar to a sweltering 40 degrees on this farm,

0:11:100:11:14

'so keeping cool is crucial.'

0:11:140:11:16

I think I am doing really well.

0:11:160:11:18

I think I am pretty awesome at this.

0:11:180:11:20

See that? That is the work of a pro.

0:11:210:11:23

'But just minutes later...

0:11:230:11:25

'We are already a man down.'

0:11:250:11:28

Unfortunately, I think the heat has just got to Kathryn.

0:11:280:11:31

She doesn't feel very well. She is having to sit this task out.

0:11:310:11:34

I think it just gives you an indication of how hot,

0:11:340:11:36

how hard and how humid it is out here.

0:11:360:11:39

'And Emily is back to princess mode.'

0:11:390:11:41

I've done only ten and I am exhausted.

0:11:410:11:44

Jasmine was telling me that she is incredibly competitive.

0:11:440:11:47

She doesn't like losing. So I think she has got a system where

0:11:470:11:50

she can get more than one at one time.

0:11:500:11:52

I'm going to, like, think about doing 200.

0:11:540:11:59

That's my aim.

0:11:590:12:01

'Jasmine is rushing from tree to tree, but in her haste, she risks

0:12:010:12:05

'picking unripe pods and damaging the root of this prized crop.'

0:12:050:12:09

-This is very precious for the farmer.

-Yeah.

0:12:090:12:12

Because it is like a bank for him. This is where he gets his money.

0:12:120:12:15

-Yeah, the trees are so precious, very vital.

-Very precious.

0:12:150:12:17

These are special trees.

0:12:170:12:19

-Very special.

-We take good care of them.

-We must be very careful.

0:12:190:12:22

Exactly.

0:12:220:12:23

'Unlike the girls, Ed and Rob are taking it really seriously

0:12:230:12:27

'and carefully picking the ripest pods.'

0:12:270:12:30

The toughest part of this is actually finding healthy ones.

0:12:300:12:34

'While the boys are hard at it, for Jasmine,

0:12:400:12:43

'it seems to be less about work and more about winning.'

0:12:430:12:46

More than 15 in, like, 20 minutes.

0:12:460:12:51

At least I'm going to beat the target.

0:12:510:12:53

'12-year-old Jasmine, from Bedford, has one thing on her mind.'

0:12:550:12:59

Here is my phone, and I love it, love it, love it!

0:12:590:13:01

She's literally - eyes glued down onto her phone.

0:13:010:13:04

I like texting people.

0:13:040:13:05

"Do want to come out today? What are you up to? What is the new gossip?"

0:13:050:13:08

I never stop talking. I actually never stop talking.

0:13:080:13:11

'But Jasmine doesn't just use

0:13:110:13:12

'her phone to keep in touch with friends.'

0:13:120:13:14

Jasmine is the queen of selfies.

0:13:140:13:16

I have taken about 150 photos of me.

0:13:160:13:20

A lot of my friends tell me that I'm lame.

0:13:200:13:23

'And when Jasmine is too tied up on her phone,

0:13:230:13:25

'she relies on her twin sister Shola to help out.'

0:13:250:13:28

I might come in in the mornings and tell Jasmine to clean her room.

0:13:280:13:32

I'll go back in five minutes later and Shola will be the one

0:13:320:13:35

cleaning and Jasmine will just be on her phone, with no care in the world.

0:13:350:13:38

'Jasmine's mum hopes her African trip will help her realise

0:13:380:13:41

'that the world doesn't revolve around her.'

0:13:410:13:43

I want her to come back to reality.

0:13:430:13:45

Jasmine. Are you ever going to run out of breath?

0:13:470:13:49

'Back on the farm, Jasmine is on a mission to beat that target.

0:13:490:13:52

'And in a crafty move,

0:13:520:13:54

'she has got one of the locals to give her a hand.'

0:13:540:13:56

Thank you so much.

0:13:560:13:59

'She is using their scarf as a makeshift basket.

0:13:590:14:02

Thank you!

0:14:020:14:03

'But her ever-increasing pile hasn't escaped

0:14:040:14:07

'the attention of the others, and they are not happy.'

0:14:070:14:09

She has got that massive bucket thing, whatever she is using...

0:14:090:14:12

-She's using a scarf, isn't she?

-..and we don't.

0:14:120:14:15

'Convinced that Jasmine is cheating, Emily decides to fight fire

0:14:150:14:18

'with fire and steel some pods for herself.'

0:14:180:14:21

She's got too many, she won't notice.

0:14:210:14:23

Just don't tell her. Sh.

0:14:240:14:27

'But little gets past the boss.'

0:14:270:14:29

-We have to tell them, it's kind of cheating on the other.

-Exactly.

0:14:290:14:33

'Finally, after an exhausting morning, the hour is up.

0:14:370:14:40

'Their first taste of farm work is over.'

0:14:400:14:42

HE SIGHS

0:14:420:14:44

'But have they done enough to impress their boss?'

0:14:440:14:47

Yayra and his team are going to count your pods.

0:14:470:14:50

They're going to see how well you've done.

0:14:500:14:52

You are going to take a well-deserved break.

0:14:520:14:54

And we're going to meet up with Yayra

0:14:540:14:55

and find out how you got on, yeah?

0:14:550:14:57

The hard work might be over,

0:14:590:15:00

but the kids' greatest challenge is yet to come.

0:15:000:15:03

I think that was the most gammiest thing I I've ever actually seen.

0:15:060:15:09

It's disgusting.

0:15:090:15:11

'It's just not something I'd want to do ever again.'

0:15:110:15:14

So next time, I'm going in the bush.

0:15:140:15:16

'The pods have been counted and all the kids can do is wait

0:15:180:15:21

'to find out who Yayra will promote and who he will demote.'

0:15:210:15:25

Edward, you really have done well.

0:15:250:15:27

You were a bit slow, but you got to 77.

0:15:270:15:30

That is really impressive.

0:15:300:15:33

And Robbie, how did Robert do?

0:15:330:15:35

Robert, you've actually brought it to 84.

0:15:350:15:38

I told you!

0:15:380:15:39

-I'm proud of that, actually.

-Yes.

0:15:390:15:42

Jasmine was actually the fastest.

0:15:420:15:44

She actually got 114 pods.

0:15:440:15:47

-Yes!

-114 pods.

-114.

0:15:470:15:51

But I have seen that she was having a scarf.

0:15:510:15:55

You did have this advantage that the others didn't.

0:15:550:15:57

-Exactly.

-Do you think that is fair?

-I don't know, really.

0:15:570:16:00

-Do you guys think it is fair or not?

-No.

-No?

0:16:000:16:03

-No.

-It's not fair, then.

0:16:030:16:05

-Emily, Emily, Emily.

-Emily.

0:16:050:16:08

So you got 41 pods. That's all you made.

0:16:080:16:11

So, you know, we have to promote some and demote some.

0:16:130:16:17

I can only say that the two ladies have, in a way, cheated.

0:16:170:16:22

You were actually picking some pods from Jasmine.

0:16:220:16:27

-And that is really not good.

-And Rob.

0:16:270:16:30

And you were using a scarf,

0:16:300:16:31

so we have to say that the two ladies are demoted

0:16:310:16:34

and the two young men are to be promoted.

0:16:340:16:39

-Wow!

-Yes, yes!

0:16:390:16:43

I'm disappointed, but to be honest, I knew it was coming

0:16:430:16:46

because I got the least amount of cocoa...things.

0:16:460:16:51

I got 114 and our target was 100, and everyone else got below that.

0:16:510:16:56

And I got demoted!

0:16:560:16:58

But I'm not the expert here, so...

0:16:580:17:00

While some of our kids have started to settle in,

0:17:040:17:07

guess who doesn't think the place is Emily enough.

0:17:070:17:10

The village is so different to anything I have ever seen.

0:17:120:17:15

The houses are awful. They live in mud huts.

0:17:150:17:18

And I'm not kidding, I thought that was just, like, a phrase.

0:17:180:17:21

They live in literal mud.

0:17:210:17:23

Emily may be surprised that the conditions of this village,

0:17:230:17:27

but Kathryn, Rob and Ed have asked to meet Samuel's family.

0:17:270:17:30

Samuel, you well?

0:17:300:17:32

-Is this your wife?

-Yes.

-Akweley? Lovely to meet you.

0:17:320:17:37

'Farm owner Samuel lives in a two-room house with his wife,

0:17:370:17:41

'their parents and children.'

0:17:410:17:42

Wow.

0:17:450:17:46

How many people sleep in here?

0:17:490:17:52

Two.

0:17:520:17:54

My bedroom at home is a lot bigger.

0:17:540:17:58

You are a lucky boy, you are very lucky.

0:17:580:18:02

We don't work from a young age. We start at 16, 17.

0:18:020:18:05

And we get things that we take for granted, just from our parents.

0:18:050:18:08

Akweley, is there anything that our kids can do to help you?

0:18:080:18:13

HE TRANSLATES

0:18:130:18:17

Yes, I can do it.

0:18:180:18:20

I can help them.

0:18:200:18:22

-Are you up for that?

-KIDS: Yeah.

0:18:220:18:24

Akweley, they are all yours.

0:18:240:18:26

-You have three more children.

-Thank you.

0:18:260:18:29

'On the other side of the village, I have sent Jasmine

0:18:290:18:32

'and Emily to meet 14-year-old twins - Junior and Senior.'

0:18:320:18:36

Oh!

0:18:360:18:37

This is my grandfather's room.

0:18:390:18:42

And this is our living room.

0:18:420:18:44

And this is our bedroom.

0:18:460:18:49

It's like a hammock or something with a net in, I'm guessing.

0:18:490:18:53

Now, this is our mat.

0:18:530:18:55

Oh, so you sleep on the floor?

0:18:550:18:57

The boys have nets above their heads that protect them from mosquitoes,

0:18:570:19:00

which in this village, is a luxury.

0:19:000:19:02

It's so different, I really can't get over this.

0:19:020:19:05

If I had to stay here for a night, I think

0:19:050:19:07

I'd probably hyperventilate.

0:19:070:19:08

I like sleeping here because if you sleep here, it's good.

0:19:080:19:13

That was really shocking.

0:19:140:19:16

Like, I never thought that anything was as bad as that.

0:19:160:19:21

While the girls still haven't found their feet here,

0:19:210:19:23

the rest of the group are getting stuck right in,

0:19:230:19:26

although I think domestic duties might be a new

0:19:260:19:29

thing for all of them.

0:19:290:19:30

It's actually quite difficult,

0:19:300:19:32

like getting the stuff off that I don't see.

0:19:320:19:35

-It's kind of...

-Do you do the washing up at home?

-No.

-No?

0:19:350:19:40

It makes me feel like I want to do a little bit more at home,

0:19:430:19:47

but not too much.

0:19:470:19:49

As the kids prepare to bed down for the night in the best rooms the

0:19:520:19:55

village has to offer, it seems some of our kids are still not happy.

0:19:550:19:59

Whoa, look at all the... Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa...

0:19:590:20:02

WHOA!

0:20:020:20:03

That is massive!

0:20:030:20:05

One night would be an adventure, I think,

0:20:050:20:08

but any more than one night, like two weeks or whatever, is

0:20:080:20:11

just too much, pushing the boat out, cos there's no showers here.

0:20:110:20:15

No showers.

0:20:150:20:16

And it is not just our kids that are discovering new things today.

0:20:170:20:21

THEY TALK AT ONCE

0:20:230:20:28

ROOSTER CROWS

0:20:310:20:33

So it is the morning of day two and our kids have spent

0:20:360:20:39

their first-ever night in a Ghanaian village.

0:20:390:20:41

This is the first time I ever had to make up my own bed.

0:20:440:20:47

As soon as the sun is up, work starts here.

0:20:490:20:51

And having impressed the boss yesterday,

0:20:510:20:53

Yayra has got the perfect job for Rob, Kathryn and Ed.

0:20:530:20:57

OK, guys,

0:20:570:20:59

back where we all started.

0:20:590:21:02

-Yayra, how are you today?

-Good.

-Are you well?

-Yeah.

0:21:020:21:05

Hello, Samuel.

0:21:050:21:07

OK, guys, I really want to give you a chance at the most important

0:21:070:21:11

task in chocolate production.

0:21:110:21:13

Inside every pod, are the precious cocoa beans that make our chocolate.

0:21:150:21:20

The kids must remove the beans carefully.

0:21:200:21:22

Every part contains enough beans to make two chocolate bars,

0:21:220:21:26

so every one counts.

0:21:260:21:28

It feels really gooey and slimy,

0:21:280:21:32

kind of like tadpole slime.

0:21:320:21:33

This is actually... It's actually surprisingly fun.

0:21:360:21:39

Cruising for a bruising.

0:21:390:21:41

But Yayra has got other ideas for demoted duo Jasmine and Emily.

0:21:410:21:45

He has given them one of the most unpleasant jobs in cocoa production.

0:21:450:21:49

You have to redeem yourself today by really portraying

0:21:490:21:53

how best you can do that job.

0:21:530:21:54

After sitting in the baking heat for six days, the white flesh

0:21:570:22:01

round the cocoa beans is rotten, and the girls' task is to remove it.

0:22:010:22:06

I don't know if I can do this.

0:22:060:22:08

It smells, I'm not kidding, like, fish with loads of vinegar on.

0:22:080:22:13

I think that has put me off of chocolate for life.

0:22:130:22:16

Jasmine isn't distracted by the smell and after cheating

0:22:160:22:19

yesterday, she is determined to impress.

0:22:190:22:21

-Just get in there, it's not that hard.

-It's not hard.

0:22:210:22:24

-No, I don't like it.

-It's just cocoa.

0:22:240:22:26

Oh, dear, it seems Emily is really not liking this.

0:22:260:22:30

Emily, come on!

0:22:300:22:32

It stinks. And I don't like it on me.

0:22:320:22:34

And it looks like I've put my hand in sick.

0:22:340:22:37

Let's get to work.

0:22:370:22:39

-Or would you like to fetch water instead?

-I'll do it.

0:22:390:22:42

So, you know what you are going to do. Jasmine will pick this placenta.

0:22:420:22:46

-What do I do with it? What do I do with that?

-You put it here.

0:22:460:22:49

-What do I...?

-You put it here.

0:22:490:22:51

-Eww!

-You see, you are going to waste it.

0:22:510:22:53

This is very expensive.

0:22:530:22:56

This is a lot of money.

0:22:560:22:57

How are you getting on, Rob?

0:23:010:23:03

-I think I am doing quite well, actually.

-Yeah, not too bad?

0:23:030:23:06

-Not too bad.

-Ed? Tell me how you are finding it.

0:23:060:23:09

I'm finding it quite icky, I don't like the taking out bit.

0:23:090:23:15

I wouldn't imagine how much work went into making chocolate.

0:23:170:23:21

I'm surprised, really.

0:23:210:23:23

I tried to open this. You have a go.

0:23:240:23:27

Ed, it wasn't that hard.

0:23:300:23:31

-What? That's because I loosened it for you.

-Yeah.

0:23:310:23:35

Finally, it seems Emily has settled in.

0:23:370:23:40

We do seem to have a bit of a turnaround.

0:23:400:23:43

Jasmine seems to be getting stuck in and Emily is following suit.

0:23:430:23:47

My pile is actually catching up.

0:23:490:23:51

Never thought you'd hear that, would you? I'm beating Jasmine, guys.

0:23:510:23:54

THEY LAUGH

0:23:540:23:56

As both tasks near the end, there is

0:23:560:23:58

-one last challenge for our promoted group.

-Don't spill it.

-OK.

0:23:580:24:03

They must carry their beans to the drying area,

0:24:030:24:05

just like the locals do.

0:24:050:24:07

I've got an itchy nose.

0:24:070:24:09

THEY SPEAK IN LOCAL TONGUE

0:24:160:24:19

And it is not just the promoted lot who are pleased with themselves.

0:24:210:24:24

I did try my hardest.

0:24:240:24:26

It was fun. To me it was.

0:24:260:24:29

Our girls have actually finished the task.

0:24:290:24:31

And I've got to say, I am quite proud of them.

0:24:310:24:33

They got their heads down and they've done it.

0:24:330:24:36

So Yayra decides to allow Emily

0:24:360:24:39

and Jasmine to rejoin the rest of the group for their final job.

0:24:390:24:42

OK, gang, follow Yayra.

0:24:420:24:45

This is the girls' last chance to prove his themselves to the boss.

0:24:450:24:48

We will be having Emily and Ed here

0:24:480:24:51

and the rest will go over here.

0:24:510:24:53

Cocoa beans are sold according to size,

0:24:540:24:56

and the final task is to sort the big ones from the little

0:24:560:24:59

ones before they are weighed, bagged and shipped to Europe.

0:24:590:25:02

And, guys, once you have sieved them through, you then put them in a bag.

0:25:020:25:06

So, it moves so fast, you just have to pick them out.

0:25:090:25:13

Jasmine.

0:25:130:25:14

That's it. You have it.

0:25:160:25:18

But before long, it seems even here,

0:25:190:25:21

Emily can't quite help being Emily.

0:25:210:25:24

My arms absolutely kill.

0:25:240:25:27

I'm really on edge.

0:25:270:25:29

Jasmine, however, is full steam ahead.

0:25:290:25:32

For Jasmine, today has been all about proving herself to the boss.

0:25:360:25:40

The question is, has it worked?

0:25:400:25:42

'After a tough two days on the farm, Yayra will now decide who has

0:25:520:25:56

'done enough to earn themselves some wages.'

0:25:560:25:58

The first couple of days in Africa, it's a big deal,

0:25:580:26:00

and you have done very well, all of you.

0:26:000:26:02

You know, you have struggled at certain things, but on the whole,

0:26:020:26:06

I am very proud that you are here, you have given it a go.

0:26:060:26:09

So, guys, some of you will be paid a wage,

0:26:090:26:12

and Yayra's going to tell us who he would hire if you were adults.

0:26:120:26:16

And some of you aren't going to be so lucky this time.

0:26:160:26:19

Edward. You know what, we had good time these two days.

0:26:190:26:22

I have to be very honest with you - you were a bit slower

0:26:240:26:27

and you were not really showing that great interest.

0:26:270:26:30

Rob was really good.

0:26:300:26:34

He was really hard-working.

0:26:340:26:35

It was really fun learning how to do those kind of jobs and how

0:26:350:26:40

often people do these jobs

0:26:400:26:42

and have to go through this kind of stuff.

0:26:420:26:44

-So...

-Emily!

-Emily of olde.

0:26:440:26:46

Emily was actually just always complaining.

0:26:460:26:50

She was really not working hard. Emily was really, really too lazy.

0:26:500:26:56

Because I have never worked as well.

0:26:560:26:58

-I now know what standards I am expected to work at.

-Yes.

0:26:580:27:02

-So next time I will try and push myself...

-Really?

0:27:020:27:06

-..to get to those standards.

-Like we pushed the bins.

-Yeah.

0:27:060:27:09

Jasmine.

0:27:090:27:10

-How did our Jasmine do?

-Jasmine... She has really done very well.

0:27:100:27:15

Jasmine, you have to keep it up. That was so great.

0:27:150:27:19

I'm really competitive in lots of ways,

0:27:190:27:22

so I just wanted to get in and do it.

0:27:220:27:23

So, I really would be straightforward.

0:27:230:27:27

I would really engage Robert and Jasmine.

0:27:270:27:32

-For you.

-Thank you.

-That is about six quid, about £6.

0:27:320:27:36

-And this is for you, Jaz.

-Thank you, Stacey.

0:27:360:27:39

And thank you, Mr Boss Man.

0:27:390:27:41

Emily, Kathryn, Ed, not quite this time round.

0:27:410:27:46

What a surprise(!)

0:27:460:27:47

THEY LAUGH
