This is Show Me What You're Made Of UK.

0:00:020:00:03

I'm taking five teens the length and breadth of the country...

0:00:030:00:07

Oh, my...

0:00:070:00:09

..and putting them on production lines on factories and farms...

0:00:090:00:12

..so they can experience first-hand...

0:00:150:00:17

..what it takes to survive and thrive

0:00:190:00:21

in some of Britain's toughest industries.

0:00:210:00:24

They all come at once!

0:00:260:00:27

It's physically impossible.

0:00:290:00:30

I am soaked.

0:00:300:00:31

This is Show Me What You're Made Of.

0:00:320:00:34

Buck-buck-buck!

0:00:340:00:36

Buck, buck!

0:00:360:00:37

BUCK!

0:00:370:00:38

Our five putting themselves on the line are...

0:00:400:00:43

rules the roost Eloushka...

0:00:430:00:45

Everyone's world kind of revolves around me

0:00:450:00:48

and if I'm not happy with something,

0:00:480:00:50

it probably won't happen.

0:00:500:00:51

..lots of laughs Tom...

0:00:510:00:54

I like really trying to be funny.

0:00:540:00:55

It's got me into trouble.

0:00:550:00:56

Sometimes I say stuff that shouldn't be said.

0:00:560:01:00

.."me, me, me" Madz...

0:01:000:01:02

Everyone in my family has called me spoiled.

0:01:020:01:05

I like being spoiled.

0:01:050:01:07

I know that's a bit bad to say.

0:01:070:01:08

..screen queen Maddie...

0:01:080:01:10

If I keep begging for the thing that I really, really want,

0:01:100:01:13

I will get it in the end.

0:01:130:01:15

..and living the dream Lucas.

0:01:150:01:16

I like to be the centre of attention because, like,

0:01:160:01:19

everyone's looking at me,

0:01:190:01:20

and who wouldn't want to look at me?

0:01:200:01:21

Like, come on!

0:01:210:01:22

Our pampered five - Lucas, Madz, Eloushka, Maddie and Tom -

0:01:300:01:35

are about to get their very first taste of the working world.

0:01:350:01:39

I'm taking them to one of the country's

0:01:390:01:41

biggest recycling factories, in Bristol.

0:01:410:01:44

In the UK, we produce

0:01:450:01:47

around 200 million tonnes of waste every year.

0:01:470:01:51

That's three tonnes per person,

0:01:510:01:53

the same weight as an Asian elephant.

0:01:530:01:56

But recycling isn't all just rubbish.

0:01:560:01:58

It's also serious business.

0:01:580:02:00

It's estimated to be worth around £6 billion a year.

0:02:000:02:04

The question is have our five got the stomach

0:02:040:02:07

to cope with a job in waste?

0:02:070:02:10

Oh, no!

0:02:100:02:13

Is that poo?

0:02:130:02:15

I've always wanted to be a binman.

0:02:150:02:18

Well, what we chuck in our bins could end up here at Suez,

0:02:200:02:24

in one of their material recycling facilities, or Mrfs.

0:02:240:02:28

31 employees sift through 200 tonnes of rubbish every day,

0:02:280:02:33

and over the next two days,

0:02:330:02:35

our five will be joining the workforce here

0:02:350:02:37

to see if they're good enough to be offered a job.

0:02:370:02:40

I like to be the figure of authority,

0:02:410:02:43

not under a figure of authority.

0:02:430:02:45

So you'd like to be the boss, ideally?

0:02:450:02:48

I'd like to be.

0:02:480:02:49

Well, I will, cos I'm amazing at everything.

0:02:490:02:51

-You're too young.

-You're saying that Lucas is too young.

0:02:510:02:54

There's only a year between you.

0:02:540:02:56

Yeah!

0:02:560:02:57

I think his actual age is only a year behind us

0:02:570:03:00

-but, like, his maturity is quite a few years behind us.

-Ooh!

0:03:000:03:03

'Oh, fierce rivalry already!'

0:03:030:03:05

I'm going to be boss,

0:03:050:03:07

and then I'm going to fire you.

0:03:070:03:08

Yeah, that's how I roll.

0:03:080:03:11

'Their actual boss for the next two days...'

0:03:130:03:15

This way, gang.

0:03:150:03:16

'..is Suez Operations Manager Steve.

0:03:160:03:20

'He's the man they have to impress.'

0:03:200:03:23

-Hello.

-Good morning.

0:03:230:03:24

Tell me how you operate as a business.

0:03:240:03:27

We recycle material

0:03:270:03:29

that you throw away in your recycling bins every day.

0:03:290:03:33

You can find all sorts of things.

0:03:330:03:35

Food waste can be in there.

0:03:350:03:37

You could have things like dirty nappies going through the facility.

0:03:370:03:41

So it's important that they are taken out,

0:03:410:03:43

because they don't want to be in our end product.

0:03:430:03:45

Who's willing to be on nappy duty, then?

0:03:450:03:47

-Lucas?

-I don't want to touch that!

0:03:480:03:51

-STEVE:

-It's hard work.

0:03:510:03:53

People have to work quickly.

0:03:530:03:55

So it's important that you work efficiently,

0:03:550:03:57

because we're judged at the end of the week

0:03:570:03:59

to see how much material we've processed.

0:03:590:04:01

-Do you have to wear what you're wearing?

-Yes,

0:04:010:04:03

you have to wear the safety gear.

0:04:030:04:04

All right, gang, do you want to follow your boss?

0:04:040:04:06

-Yes.

-Nice and quick.

0:04:060:04:07

Work, work, work, work, work.

0:04:070:04:10

'Safety is key here,

0:04:100:04:12

'and that means getting kitted out from top to toe

0:04:120:04:15

'before setting foot on the factory floor.'

0:04:150:04:17

You're going to look the part.

0:04:170:04:19

So, how are we feeling about our uniforms?

0:04:220:04:24

Very trendy(!)

0:04:240:04:26

I don't like helmets.

0:04:260:04:27

-I don't like orange.

-You don't like orange?

-No.

0:04:270:04:30

Ooh!

0:04:300:04:31

-We're here to work...

-I'm the new Michael Jackson.

0:04:310:04:34

..not to walk on a catwalk.

0:04:340:04:36

'I think Lucas might have already forgotten

0:04:360:04:38

'he's here to do a serious job...'

0:04:380:04:40

Ooh!

0:04:400:04:41

'..and his attitude is catching.'

0:04:410:04:43

Our young workers are coming face-to-face

0:04:460:04:49

with the mucky world of recycling.

0:04:490:04:51

Oh, my...

0:04:510:04:54

I did not think there was going to be that much rubbish.

0:04:550:04:58

I can just smell it. I hate the smell.

0:04:580:05:00

It stinks badly, like bin juice.

0:05:000:05:02

I can't smell it!

0:05:040:05:05

Eloushka's all right,

0:05:050:05:06

but the smell is getting to the others, especially Lucas.

0:05:060:05:10

Everyone's seen these before, right? Milk cartons.

0:05:100:05:13

That's a valuable material, it's worth quite a lot of money.

0:05:130:05:16

Newspaper, card, magazines, all recyclable.

0:05:160:05:20

OK, Lucas, is everything OK?

0:05:200:05:22

It stinks badly.

0:05:220:05:24

Do you think you're overreacting slightly?

0:05:240:05:27

-Eh, yes.

-Is the smell unbearable?

-For me, it is.

0:05:270:05:30

There's nothing to it.

0:05:300:05:32

Guys, what we've got to remember, we've all produced this.

0:05:320:05:35

We are all responsible for this, all of us.

0:05:350:05:37

After the waste has been loaded onto the conveyor,

0:05:430:05:45

it is sorted by hand

0:05:450:05:47

to remove any items which shouldn't be there.

0:05:470:05:49

Then machines separate the recyclables

0:05:490:05:52

into different categories

0:05:520:05:54

like paper, plastics and metals.

0:05:540:05:56

Finally, it's sorted again by hand

0:05:560:05:59

to remove anything that can't be recycled

0:05:590:06:01

or is in the wrong place.

0:06:010:06:02

It's then squeezed into bales and sold,

0:06:020:06:05

ready to be turned into paper, plastics and metal products again.

0:06:050:06:08

So, in this bucket are examples of stuff that we don't recycle here,

0:06:080:06:13

what we call residue -

0:06:130:06:15

crisp packets, fabric, material.

0:06:150:06:17

That could be recycled, but it's contaminated with mayonnaise,

0:06:170:06:21

so we can't recycle that.

0:06:210:06:23

Now to the things we can recycle -

0:06:230:06:25

clear bottles, cans, cardboard, paper.

0:06:250:06:28

So, they are what we call our target materials.

0:06:280:06:32

Steve can't yet trust the group on the factory's moving front line,

0:06:320:06:35

so their first task is at the sampling table,

0:06:350:06:38

to test their focus and speed.

0:06:380:06:41

Here, the workers sort through sample amounts of waste

0:06:410:06:43

to gauge how much of the material coming into the factory

0:06:430:06:46

is recyclable.

0:06:460:06:47

All right, stand back.

0:06:500:06:52

Our five must sift through an 80-kilo tip of material,

0:06:520:06:56

with each of them responsible for collecting a different product.

0:06:560:06:59

They've got an hour and a quarter to get through as much as possible.

0:06:590:07:02

OK, guys, get going!

0:07:020:07:04

Tom's picking cardboard,

0:07:060:07:08

Maddie and Madz are on plastics,

0:07:080:07:10

Lucas mixed metals

0:07:100:07:12

and Eloushka paper.

0:07:120:07:14

Nice and quick, yeah?

0:07:140:07:16

Depending on how each of our five perform,

0:07:160:07:19

Steve will decide to promote or demote them.

0:07:190:07:22

No, don't throw it at people.

0:07:220:07:24

Look, nice and calm.

0:07:240:07:25

Sorry!

0:07:250:07:26

It doesn't take long for Lucas to lose focus.

0:07:270:07:30

Lucas pushed everything

0:07:330:07:36

so then it all came down here

0:07:360:07:38

and now we all have to look on the floor for it.

0:07:380:07:41

Ew.

0:07:410:07:42

-I'm looking for different types of paper and residue.

-Ah! Ah!

0:07:430:07:48

No!

0:07:480:07:49

Lucas has just spotted his worst nightmare...

0:07:490:07:52

Is that a nappy?

0:07:520:07:54

Yeah, that's a nappy.

0:07:540:07:56

I think you have to pick that up and put it in the residue bucket.

0:07:560:08:00

I know there's a bit of poo,

0:08:000:08:02

but just close your eyes and hope for the best.

0:08:020:08:04

On the other side of the table,

0:08:100:08:12

Maddie and Madz are having trouble filling their bins.

0:08:120:08:15

What's this? Read it. Read it.

0:08:150:08:17

-STEVE:

-'The two Maddies,'

0:08:170:08:19

I think they're getting a bit distracted by Lucas,

0:08:190:08:21

who's probably performing the poorest, if I'm honest.

0:08:210:08:24

He'll pick up a product and he seems more interested in examining it

0:08:240:08:26

and looking at it rather than processing it.

0:08:260:08:29

-I think Lucas finds it really tricky...

-Yeah.

0:08:290:08:31

..to engage in things that he doesn't find really interesting.

0:08:310:08:35

Yeah.

0:08:350:08:36

Label-loving Lucas is many things,

0:08:380:08:40

but modest isn't one of them.

0:08:400:08:42

The five things that sum me up about my personality are

0:08:420:08:45

shopaholic,

0:08:450:08:47

smart, funny,

0:08:470:08:49

competitive

0:08:490:08:50

and ridiculously handsome.

0:08:500:08:52

Mum Nina says he's no shrinking violet.

0:08:540:08:57

He likes to make people laugh

0:08:570:09:00

and he thinks it's OK

0:09:000:09:02

but sometimes it's not the appropriate time for it.

0:09:020:09:05

I like to be the centre of attention because, like,

0:09:050:09:07

everyone's looking at me

0:09:070:09:08

and who wouldn't want to look at me? So... Like, come on.

0:09:080:09:11

His mum knows that, with his love of the limelight,

0:09:110:09:14

knuckling down to work could be tricky.

0:09:140:09:17

Mmm!

0:09:170:09:18

If the job in the factory is boring,

0:09:180:09:21

I think that will affect Lucas's behaviour,

0:09:210:09:24

that he will be looking for attention, making jokes,

0:09:240:09:29

trying to escape his job.

0:09:290:09:31

And Lucas's mum is spot on.

0:09:340:09:36

Back at the Mrf, he's ground to a halt

0:09:360:09:38

and has his nose stuck in a football mag.

0:09:380:09:41

Work!

0:09:420:09:44

-Yeah?

-Work!

0:09:440:09:45

-Look!

-Lucas...

-Look...

0:09:470:09:50

If I was employing you, I wouldn't give you time to read.

0:09:500:09:53

The important thing is you focus on the task and clear it quickly.

0:09:530:09:56

Eloushka and Tom are managing to ignore Lucas

0:09:570:10:00

and stay focused on their jobs.

0:10:000:10:02

Tom, it looks like you've picked a lot of good cardboard off there.

0:10:020:10:05

-Good work.

-Yeah, I was wondering...

0:10:050:10:07

So, that's plastic, isn't it?

0:10:070:10:08

Just testing!

0:10:080:10:09

So you seem to have filled your bin up quite quickly,

0:10:090:10:12

and you've picked out some good non-target items.

0:10:120:10:14

You're doing well there.

0:10:140:10:16

-Tom, you seem to be working quite quickly.

-Yes.

0:10:160:10:19

And listen, you and Eloushka,

0:10:190:10:21

you seem to be the quickest right now.

0:10:210:10:24

It's cos we're Welsh.

0:10:240:10:25

-It's cos you're Welsh?

-That's why.

0:10:250:10:27

It's because they're both Welsh.

0:10:270:10:29

While Eloushka's sticking to her pledge to be the best,

0:10:290:10:32

Lucas seems to have abandoned his ideas of being boss...

0:10:320:10:36

Oh, with the catch!

0:10:360:10:37

..and Tom is now Eloushka's main competition.

0:10:390:10:42

OK, everybody, step back from the table now.

0:10:440:10:46

The task's finished.

0:10:460:10:47

'Steve's workers would have sifted through

0:10:490:10:51

'four times the amount of waste in the same time.'

0:10:510:10:53

Come on then, gang.

0:10:530:10:54

'After casting an expert eye over the group's work,

0:10:570:10:59

'it's time for Steve to decide

0:10:590:11:01

'who he wants to promote and who will be demoted.'

0:11:010:11:04

Just generally, how did they get on as a group?

0:11:070:11:09

Some of you were quite good, quite quick at it

0:11:090:11:11

and then there's the other extreme where people lost focus.

0:11:110:11:15

So, Steve, are any of them going to be promoted?

0:11:150:11:19

-I'm going to promote two of them today.

-OK.

-OK,

0:11:190:11:22

and the two I'm going to promote

0:11:220:11:24

is Eloushka and Tom.

0:11:240:11:26

OK, so, Eloushka and Tom, well done.

0:11:280:11:31

First promotions!

0:11:310:11:32

So, are you feeling quite proud?

0:11:320:11:35

-Yeah.

-Yeah, I tried my best,

0:11:350:11:37

put 100% effort in, and it's paid off.

0:11:370:11:41

Girls, demoted, how are we feeling about that?

0:11:410:11:44

I knew that that wasn't really my forte.

0:11:440:11:46

First factory, first task, first job...

0:11:460:11:51

..a demotion, I'm not really pleased with myself.

0:11:520:11:54

Kind of gutted.

0:11:540:11:56

Yeah, I am satisfied, proud, happy with myself.

0:11:560:11:59

With Steve questioning the demoted trio's efforts,

0:12:060:12:09

their working day is far from over.

0:12:090:12:11

I'm taking them to volunteer at a charity

0:12:130:12:15

which, like the recycling factory, gives new life to waste.

0:12:150:12:19

I think what became very obvious very quickly today

0:12:190:12:22

was, you know, where we may dismiss something,

0:12:220:12:24

"Oh, it's rubbish, it's just waste,"

0:12:240:12:27

actually we learnt it's still a valuable commodity,

0:12:270:12:29

just in a different way,

0:12:290:12:30

and I think that's the same with food.

0:12:300:12:33

'We're visiting Bristol FareShare,

0:12:330:12:36

'a charity which takes food destined for the bin and redistributes it.

0:12:360:12:40

'I hope Lucas will take this place seriously.'

0:12:400:12:43

-How are you?

-I'm good, how are you?

0:12:430:12:45

'Jacqui Reeves is in charge here.'

0:12:450:12:47

-Hi.

-This is Jacqui.

-Nice to meet you.

-What's your name?

0:12:470:12:50

-Maddie.

-Maddie.

0:12:500:12:51

-I'm Madz.

-Hi, Madz.

0:12:510:12:53

I'm Maddie.

0:12:530:12:54

-Oh...

-Lucas, Lucas!

0:12:540:12:56

The charity takes surplus food and drink directly from the suppliers

0:12:560:13:00

and gives it to other charities

0:13:000:13:02

who turn it into meals for those in need.

0:13:020:13:05

That's people who are homeless, young people, refugee projects.

0:13:050:13:09

All this food here that you can see would be thrown away.

0:13:090:13:13

It's completely edible, totally fresh,

0:13:130:13:16

it's not even past its sell-by date.

0:13:160:13:18

The only reason it could be here is possibly the packaging's

0:13:180:13:22

a bit damaged or the wrong barcode's on it, it's as simple as that.

0:13:220:13:26

Or it could even be because it looks less than perfect.

0:13:260:13:29

Something like this, might not be straight.

0:13:290:13:33

-It's all edible.

-Yeah!

0:13:330:13:35

All right, gang, off you go.

0:13:350:13:36

It's Maddie, Madz and Lucas's job to work with the other

0:13:360:13:39

volunteers gathering food for the orders before they're shipped out.

0:13:390:13:43

Take that one there.

0:13:430:13:45

Mixed biscuits and we're looking for one tray.

0:13:450:13:48

There are over 70 volunteers here working to deliver around

0:13:480:13:51

-a ton of food a day...

-Thank you.

0:13:510:13:54

..which makes 2,800 meals.

0:13:540:13:59

Could you imagine doing this for a job all day?

0:13:590:14:01

I don't know, I quite like it. Yeah.

0:14:010:14:03

Let's hope Maddie's enthusiasm is catching.

0:14:030:14:06

Back at the Mrf, our promoted pair have come to find out

0:14:080:14:11

how one man's waste is another man's gold.

0:14:110:14:13

Derek, could you tell me what we've got loaded so far, mate, please?

0:14:130:14:16

Mateusz started working here three years ago

0:14:160:14:19

when he arrived from Poland

0:14:190:14:20

and was promoted for the second time a month ago.

0:14:200:14:24

Nice to meet you.

0:14:240:14:25

-Hey, I'm Eloushka.

-Nice to meet you.

0:14:250:14:27

What's your job within the factory?

0:14:270:14:29

So, my job now is Mrf supervisor.

0:14:290:14:33

When you started, did you have to start off, like,

0:14:330:14:36

the small jobs, and did you see yourself becoming a supervisor?

0:14:360:14:40

If you would like to be a supervisor or to be boss,

0:14:400:14:43

you have to start from the lowest position because before you

0:14:430:14:47

get supervisor job you have to learn all of the positions below that.

0:14:470:14:52

I think it's a good idea that you have to do that

0:14:520:14:54

cos at least you know what everyone's doing,

0:14:540:14:57

you know all the job titles, you know all the rules.

0:14:570:14:59

This morning on the bus I thought being in charge was just

0:14:590:15:03

"everyone follows my rules, everyone listens to me,"

0:15:030:15:06

but listening to you,

0:15:060:15:07

I think it does show that obviously you've got to work your way up.

0:15:070:15:11

Only child Eloushka lives with her mum and grandparents.

0:15:140:15:17

If I'm not happy with something, it probably won't happen.

0:15:170:15:21

Or if I want something to happen, it probably will happen.

0:15:210:15:25

Yeah. Everyone's world kind of revolves around me.

0:15:250:15:28

And this Welsh lass certainly enjoys the finer things in life.

0:15:280:15:32

I have five horses and for holidays I normally go on a cruise.

0:15:320:15:37

I find cruises just a really nice way to relax.

0:15:370:15:40

And I love travelling, as well.

0:15:400:15:42

Mum Nia's hoping the journey she's about to embark on

0:15:420:15:46

will be a worthwhile one.

0:15:460:15:47

I'm not convinced Eloushka fully understands the value of money,

0:15:470:15:50

so I'm hoping that during this experience that she understands that

0:15:500:15:53

there is a bit of hard graft that goes into providing

0:15:530:15:56

everything for her, make her value what she's given

0:15:560:15:58

in the future a bit more.

0:15:580:15:59

Back at the Mrf, after their chat with Mateusz,

0:16:020:16:05

it's dawning on Eloushka that climbing the career ladder is tough.

0:16:050:16:09

I think we underestimated what it takes to become a boss.

0:16:090:16:13

At the food factory, Lucas, Maddie and Madz are hard at work.

0:16:150:16:18

I hope it's a sign of things to come.

0:16:180:16:21

Pork, raw sausages...

0:16:210:16:23

We need five.

0:16:230:16:24

I wouldn't think it would all be wasted.

0:16:240:16:26

Like, it's all really nice stuff.

0:16:260:16:28

Yeah. Yeah, imagine if we all did this and then you get a nice pizza.

0:16:280:16:33

-Yeah.

-Not bad, is it?

-No!

0:16:330:16:34

SHE LAUGHS

0:16:340:16:37

I like how when it comes down to here people work in the community

0:16:370:16:40

and they work together to help other people.

0:16:400:16:43

-And I'd love when I am older to volunteer here.

-Oh, would you?

-Yeah.

0:16:430:16:48

It's a small place but it feeds a lot of people

0:16:480:16:50

good food that's edible and nothing's wrong with it.

0:16:500:16:53

It has definitely changed

0:16:530:16:54

my attitude of chucking away leftovers as well.

0:16:540:16:56

It's the morning of day two. We're now in a situation where

0:17:070:17:10

our two promoted kids are going up in the world

0:17:100:17:12

whilst the demoted three are going right down to the tip floor.

0:17:120:17:16

Steve's giving Lucas, Maddie and Madz another chance to

0:17:180:17:21

prove themselves in the factory.

0:17:210:17:23

These bales are ready to go out to our customers now,

0:17:230:17:25

so we have to inspect them to make sure they're of the right quality.

0:17:250:17:30

This is a paper bale, OK?

0:17:300:17:32

So if we see anything like plastics, that can be pulled out.

0:17:320:17:35

-Ah.

-Yeah, good. Good.

0:17:380:17:40

Magic. You see? I knew there was stuff left in there.

0:17:400:17:43

-What we don't want to do is break the bale up either.

-Yeah.

0:17:430:17:46

So we want to keep the bale intact.

0:17:460:17:47

Lucas.

0:17:510:17:52

Don't do that. Don't kick it.

0:17:520:17:54

You want to mess with me, come, we go!

0:17:540:17:58

-Got it!

-Lucas, what did I say to you?

0:17:580:18:01

-UNCLEAR REPLY

-Yeah.

0:18:020:18:04

You could injure yourself, OK?

0:18:040:18:06

While Lucas is ignoring Steve's instructions,

0:18:060:18:09

the girls are ignoring Lucas and getting on with their task.

0:18:090:18:12

Don't try and dig too deep in the bale, just look at the surface.

0:18:120:18:15

-OK.

-That's good.

0:18:150:18:16

Shall we have a look at the front of this and then see how you've done?

0:18:160:18:19

I think that looks fairly good. Well done.

0:18:190:18:22

Ooh. Ooh! Doo-doo-doo-doo. Ooh!

0:18:220:18:25

-Lucas, can I ask you to get up off the floor, please?

-OK.

0:18:250:18:28

-With Lucas continuing to muck around...

-Hi-yar! Hi-yar!

0:18:280:18:33

..Steve's patience has finally run out.

0:18:330:18:36

OK, I want you to stop now. OK, stand back.

0:18:360:18:39

OK? I've told you several times not to be punching the bales and you,

0:18:390:18:42

I saw you doing a bit of a ninja pose there and doing that again.

0:18:420:18:45

I'm going to have to take you off this job.

0:18:450:18:47

-OK?

-I wasn't hitting it, I was grabbing it out.

0:18:470:18:49

But you're putting yourself in danger and I've had to speak to you

0:18:490:18:52

several times now and I can't allow that.

0:18:520:18:54

-Do you understand?

-Oh, Lucas!

0:18:540:18:56

Across the floor, promoted duo Eloushka and Tom

0:18:590:19:03

are being trusted with the toughest job in the factory.

0:19:030:19:06

They're working on this super-speedy picking line,

0:19:060:19:09

where waste and recyclables are sorted for a final time

0:19:090:19:13

before they're packed into the bales.

0:19:130:19:15

This is so fast.

0:19:170:19:19

Steve's come up to get them started.

0:19:190:19:22

Eloushka is looking for paper and aluminium cans and Tom is

0:19:220:19:27

going to be looking to take HDPE bottles off there and then any

0:19:270:19:32

residue can come onto this conveyor.

0:19:320:19:35

The residue materials left on Eloushka's bale will end up

0:19:350:19:38

being burnt to generate power.

0:19:380:19:40

Does that go over there?

0:19:400:19:42

Working shoulder to shoulder with the professionals,

0:19:420:19:45

the pair only have seconds to decide what to keep and what to let pass.

0:19:450:19:49

Oh!

0:19:500:19:52

Everything they salvage is worth valuable money to the company.

0:19:520:19:55

Eloushka wants to be the best, but it's tough.

0:20:010:20:04

It's exhausting!

0:20:050:20:08

It's really tiring, my hands hurt.

0:20:080:20:11

And Tom's hot on her heels to be the top worker.

0:20:110:20:15

Tom, how many bins have you done?

0:20:150:20:17

-More than you!

-HE LAUGHS

0:20:170:20:19

On hand to offer support is Mateusz.

0:20:190:20:22

His first job in the factory was on this very picking line.

0:20:220:20:26

-I'm going to hand you over to Mateusz now...

-Right.

0:20:260:20:28

-..who'll help you on the line, OK?

-Fabulous, thank you, Steve.

0:20:280:20:31

It goes really quick.

0:20:330:20:34

They all come at once.

0:20:340:20:36

I started my journey from this line.

0:20:360:20:38

You're an inspiration, Mateusz.

0:20:380:20:41

-Am I?

-Yeah, absolutely.

-Oh, really?

-100%!

0:20:410:20:44

Last night, Mateusz told the pair that hard work pays off.

0:20:440:20:48

Well done.

0:20:480:20:50

Cheers, mate.

0:20:500:20:51

And they're proving to him that they listened.

0:20:510:20:54

You work really good, you work really hard.

0:20:540:20:56

Eloushka, you pick off the line a lot of ally, a lot of paper,

0:20:560:21:00

so that was well done.

0:21:000:21:02

We're the dream team.

0:21:020:21:03

My man, this.

0:21:050:21:07

Top man!

0:21:070:21:08

Back on the factory floor,

0:21:120:21:13

Lucas has been given the easiest job there is.

0:21:130:21:16

Num-num-num-num-num-num-num.

0:21:180:21:20

Oh, dear.

0:21:240:21:27

Already I can see that Lucas does not look very happy.

0:21:270:21:30

Hello.

0:21:320:21:34

-Hi.

-How's it going, Steve?

0:21:340:21:36

The girls are working well there.

0:21:360:21:38

And I can see Lucas is doing a slightly different job.

0:21:380:21:42

Yes, unfortunately, Lucas wouldn't listen to safety instructions

0:21:420:21:46

and so we've had to take him off the job and give him a different task,

0:21:460:21:49

so he's now sweeping up.

0:21:490:21:50

-Lucas.

-Yes?

-How's it going?

0:21:520:21:55

I don't know if I should say I got demoted twice

0:21:570:21:59

or I should just say I got de-de-demoted.

0:21:590:22:03

-Right.

-I think I was doing a good job.

0:22:030:22:05

Like, getting it all out.

0:22:050:22:07

But then he doesn't like it the way I'm taking it out, so, yeah.

0:22:070:22:10

If he's asking you to do something, it's probably for your own good.

0:22:100:22:14

And with one final push, time's up for the demoted three.

0:22:150:22:19

If you'd like to follow me this way.

0:22:200:22:21

OK? Keep close, please.

0:22:210:22:23

After a mixed morning, the five are reunited for one final job.

0:22:290:22:33

The one person who's got the most to prove here is Lucas.

0:22:330:22:38

OK, guys, so this is it, your last chance to impress Steve

0:22:380:22:43

before you're judged in the boardroom.

0:22:430:22:46

So this is the final quality check before it becomes baled. OK?

0:22:460:22:49

So what we need to pick off on this point is anything that's not

0:22:490:22:53

cardboard or paper.

0:22:530:22:54

We have a film chute here. OK, it's like a vacuum cleaner.

0:22:540:22:58

What you have to do is pick the film up and throw it up the chute.

0:22:580:23:01

This task is all about speed.

0:23:010:23:03

The group will be judged on how many items they pick in a minute.

0:23:030:23:06

OK, guys, get ready.

0:23:070:23:09

Why did you just say "get ready"?

0:23:090:23:11

I don't like the sound of that.

0:23:110:23:13

Oh, my...

0:23:160:23:17

14 tonnes of material passes along the conveyor belt every hour.

0:23:180:23:23

Look at that, Lucas, not good!

0:23:240:23:26

Oh, my gosh, look how fast it's coming through now!

0:23:260:23:29

Yeah, I know.

0:23:290:23:30

-This is going mad.

-Quickly, guys.

0:23:300:23:32

Quickly.

0:23:320:23:33

Ah!

0:23:330:23:35

This is Show Me What You're Made of, so let's grab this, come on.

0:23:350:23:39

Oh, my gosh.

0:23:390:23:40

Despite the mountain of material coming their way,

0:23:400:23:42

Eloushka and Tom are keeping up the good work...

0:23:420:23:45

I'm so hot my glasses are getting steamed up.

0:23:450:23:48

It's like a whole new world in here!

0:23:480:23:51

..with Maddie and Madz picking up speed...

0:23:510:23:54

Maddie, Maddie, Maddie, Maddie!

0:23:540:23:55

I didn't realise how much sweat you'd work up by doing this.

0:23:550:23:58

It's ridiculous!

0:23:580:23:59

..and it looks like Lucas has at last decided to pull his socks up.

0:23:590:24:03

Look at Lucas, he's like a different person.

0:24:030:24:06

-He's very decisive.

-Yeah, no way, great. Well done, Lucas!

0:24:060:24:11

The whole team is finally pulling together.

0:24:110:24:13

How's it looking, Steve?

0:24:150:24:16

Looking really good, I've not seen any plastic on there so far at all,

0:24:160:24:19

which is unusual cos you normally get a percentage come through.

0:24:190:24:23

So, dare I say, they seem to be doing extremely well.

0:24:230:24:27

Really pleased.

0:24:270:24:28

Guys, you are doing a fantastic job. Really, really well done.

0:24:310:24:35

I'm so, so thrilled.

0:24:350:24:37

Come on, guys, we're doing great.

0:24:370:24:39

So, right now Steve's taking note

0:24:410:24:43

in terms of how many pieces per minute the kids are able to take.

0:24:430:24:48

I've got to say, genuinely, I feel like Lucas is the strongest here.

0:24:480:24:54

-Lucas!

-Yeah?

0:24:540:24:56

The man of the moment.

0:24:560:24:58

Talk to me, what's the story? A complete transformation.

0:24:580:25:01

I'm enjoying it, basically.

0:25:010:25:03

So it's as simple as just because you are enjoying it more

0:25:030:25:05

you're willing to give it a good go?

0:25:050:25:07

Kind of. And it's more active.

0:25:070:25:09

How's your relationship with Steve?

0:25:090:25:12

-Er. Better now.

-Yeah.

0:25:120:25:15

Cos you were on rocky ground, right?

0:25:150:25:17

Yeah.

0:25:170:25:18

OK, guys, one by one we're going to take you off the line

0:25:250:25:28

and replace you. That'll be the end of the task.

0:25:280:25:31

-Bye.

-Bye.

0:25:320:25:33

It's time for the boardroom, where our five will get the lowdown

0:25:350:25:38

on their first taste of the working world.

0:25:380:25:41

-Hello.

-Hello.

0:25:410:25:43

We'll start with the final task. How do you think they did?

0:25:440:25:48

I thought the final task was great.

0:25:480:25:50

Everybody was focused, picking quickly, so, really well done.

0:25:500:25:54

-So, Steve, you've been watching our five very closely...

-Yeah.

0:25:540:25:58

..over the past few days. If we start with Tom.

0:25:580:26:02

Tom's done really well. He's been steady throughout, so well done.

0:26:020:26:06

-Thank you.

-Really, really, really pleased.

0:26:060:26:08

I've tried my best in all the tasks that we've done.

0:26:080:26:11

OK. Eloushka.

0:26:110:26:13

Similar comments to Tom. She's been consistent throughout the process.

0:26:130:26:17

You actually had the highest pick rate in the final task

0:26:170:26:20

at 30 pieces per minute, so you were basically picking

0:26:200:26:23

something every two seconds.

0:26:230:26:24

Hard work paid off.

0:26:240:26:26

Steve, can we speak about Madz, please? How's Madz done?

0:26:260:26:30

Really well in the last task.

0:26:300:26:31

Because you were under pressure, then you lifted your game.

0:26:310:26:36

How's Maddie done?

In the first task, you were quite easily distracted.

0:26:370:26:40

-Mmm.

-Let's talk about Lucas,

0:26:400:26:42

because I feel like he has had a bit of a rollercoaster.

0:26:420:26:45

Yeah.

0:26:450:26:46

In the earlier tasks, there was a definite lack of concentration

0:26:460:26:50

and a lack of following instruction.

0:26:500:26:52

But what was really pleasing for me in the final task,

0:26:520:26:55

he concentrated throughout,

0:26:550:26:57

he targeted the material well and he had the second-highest pick rate.

0:26:570:27:02

How can you behave in such different ways in the same place?

0:27:020:27:06

Well...I have a twin.

0:27:060:27:08

-THEY LAUGH

-And, like, he came over

0:27:080:27:10

and helped me and, yeah, I asked him to, so, yeah.

0:27:100:27:13

I like that twin.

0:27:130:27:14

I'd like to see more of that twin.

0:27:140:27:16

So, Steve, moving forward, if our children were over the age

0:27:160:27:21

of 18, are there any here that you would be willing to offer a job?

0:27:210:27:26

Two of them.

0:27:260:27:27

And those two are?

0:27:270:27:28

That would be Tom and Eloushka.

0:27:300:27:32

Tom and Eloushka.

0:27:320:27:34

Round of applause for these two, please.

0:27:340:27:37

-Are you three disappointed?

-I knew it was coming.

-Same, yeah.

0:27:410:27:45

I'm a bit disappointed, obviously, but we can always work on things.

0:27:450:27:48

Now Steve has to choose who is star employee.

0:27:480:27:52

It's a really close call for me, but overall

0:27:520:27:56

I would say Eloushka.

0:27:560:27:58

So, Eloushka, well done.

0:27:580:28:00

What do you make of that?

0:28:010:28:03

I'm very happy.

0:28:030:28:04

-Next time on Show Me What You're Made Of...

-Tomatoes!

0:28:050:28:08

..they get into a pickle at a sandwich factory.

0:28:080:28:11

It's physically impossible.

0:28:110:28:12

Can they get the better of a burrito?

0:28:120:28:14

-Oh, no.

-And who will cause chaos in the cleaning room?

0:28:140:28:18

I am soaking wet. I've got tuna down my shoes!
