'It's a new day and a fresh chance for the group to prove themselves.'

We all like to look good and smell nice,

so it's no surprise that the global cosmetics and toiletries industry

was recently estimated to be worth a whopping £375 billion.

Our five are about to find out the hard work that goes into making

bath bombs and other smellies found in your bathroom cabinets

up and down the country.

Oh, my God!

I'm actually going to cry.

I'm so excited!

Maddie! Maddie's happy!

You look so excited.

I love bath bombs and I use them all the time.

This is definitely going to be my factory.

I'm going to get promoted. I'm so excited to work there.

'But Eloushka has her sights set on more than just promotion -

'she wants to become supervisor

'and wear the outfit she's bought specially.'

-How's the suit?

-I tried it on to show the girls yesterday.

It could come out soon,

I don't think it's going to be my type of thing.

'from bath bombs to face masks and bubble baths.

Here's our five.

-Are you a strict boss?

Do you run a tight ship?

Firm but fair. We made 77 million items last year,

and over 100,000 of those items were done in one day.

100,000 items per day.

-Yes.

-And obviously that takes attention to detail,

and we're looking for that attention to detail in all of our staff.

OK, Jack, Matt, please may we follow you in?

-Certainly.

-Thank you.

'Wherever you look, workers are stirring, rolling,

'pressing and shaping...'

I'm so fascinated.

'..all the lotions and potions that are made here,

'but, at this company, there's one thing you don't see much of.'

There's, like, no machinery at all.

We only have a few small machines to help us with mixing.

'All the products are individually handmade.

'Without machines to help,

'there's a lot riding on the workers' performance,

'particularly our new recruits.'

So, are you excited about getting hands-on

-and getting involved with the work?

-Insanely excited.

Just the smell and the everything.

Is it what you expected?

-No.

-No.

-It's better.

What you need to do is take that excitement

and turn it into efficiency.

'For their first task, the bosses want the group making bath bombs.

'Taking the top half of the mould,

'powder is sprinkled in,

'and then three stars are placed around the edge.'

They have to be visible with these equal gaps.

OK, yeah.

Add some more of the mix in,

and what's really important is it has to fill the side.

If it doesn't, the stars will fall out when they come to being packed.

'The bottom half of the mould is crammed with more powder,

'three more stars are buried in the middle,

'and then these two moulds are pressed and twisted together.'

With the mix, it does start to set very quickly,

so speed is important with this task,

and we're looking for you guys to do 84 of these

within the hour that you have.

-Per person or...?

-Per person.

So, the same kind of targets as your regular workers?

-Yes, that's right.

-Let's see that slogan.

'Well, let's see.'

So you need to make sure you put your gloves on.

-Everyone's gloves on?

-Yeah.

How long does it take to put a pair of gloves on?

We've been waiting about ten minutes for Tom to get his gloves on.

'The shift gets going.

'The mixture is already beginning to set,

'so it's crucial the work is done quickly.'

It's annoying, frustrating...

'Lucas has asked for a mask...'

'..so the perfumed powder doesn't irritate him.'

'Unfortunately, all the group get off to a worryingly slow start.'

Yeah, it's definitely harder than it looks,

only because I didn't realise it was going to be this fiddly.

'Making sure the three stars are visible

'is tricky for the whole group.'

I can't even see the other two stars.

Like, you do that, and you can hardly see any of them.

That's really frustrating.

It's not going too well for me at the moment.

I knew it would be hard, but not, like, as hard as it feels.

I don't think I'm doing it right.

-More on top.

-Yeah.

-What's the problem?

-I don't know.

I'm just, kind of, frustrated now.

'Boss Matt is struggling to get his new workers up to speed.'

So this one will be a reject,

because you can't see a lot of the star there.

Take your time and build your speed up.

The powder's not filled in at the sides.

As soon as that dries, it'll crumble away.

So this is a waste of money, Madz, right?

'Even Maddie, who was so excited to work here, is way off the pace.'

Making bath bombs is actually a lot more technical than I thought.

The only way is up.

Yeah.

'And that's the direction Eloushka seems to be taking.'

I'm just focusing on getting on with it.

I'm going for quality, not quantity.

You've done significantly more than the others.

Eloushka has raced ahead.

She's nice and quick. She's light-years ahead of the others.

Right from the get-go,

Eloushka's been determined to be made supervisor.

She trashed the opposition in recycling...

I didn't do myself any favours.

So, in cosmetics, it's no surprise she wants to shine.

I think I have found my niche, really.

It's not physically demanding.

and I think you just need to be quite calm and careful with it.

Unlike Eloushka, the boys' shift is going from bad to downright awful.

I don't think I'm very good at the fiddly stuff.

It's halfway through and Tom still hasn't grasped the basics.

You're supposed to have the base and a top.

-That's only a base.

-What do you mean?

So we've got a rounded end...

cos he's used the same mould for the top and the bottom.

Poor old Tom is really struggling.

It's just not his factory.

But everything he's done up until this point

is a complete write-off.

Lucas, when you play with it, you're making it go clumpy.

I'm really excited to be supervisor.

I finally get a chance to show that that's where I'm supposed to be.

I know I've got it in me to be quite a bossy boss,

so I'm going to be quite conscious to not let that happen.

It's not been a great first day for most of the group.

Hopefully, things will improve tomorrow.

Day two, and everyone's getting ready for the shift...

So, this is my outfit for supervisor -

I've got some smart, black, flat trousers.

..but some are making more of an effort than others.

If I turn up in, like, just a T-shirt and, like, some jeans,

I think they'll probably look at me like,

"No, she doesn't look very smart.

"I don't think she's going to be a very good supervisor."

But then, if you look smart, they're going to go,

"Ooh, she looks very smart. I think she'll be a very good supervisor."

So, you've got to look the part, so you feel the part.

At the factory, the shift has started,

but, before our group join in, I have something else planned.

The key today, I think, is they all need to rise to the challenge

and Eloushka particularly needs to show she's got what it takes

to be a professional and reasonable leader.

So, I've arranged for her to meet Becky, a team leader,

who knows all about getting the best out of the workers.

Do you want to learn about how to be a supervisor?

Yes. Yes, I do.

I think the group I've got to manage, or supervise,

will be quite difficult.

Any tips on how to get a team to work together?

The main thing is just speak to people how you would like to be

spoken to yourself.

With the negative feedback, you've also got to give praise as well,

because, if it's all about the negative side,

then you're going to bring the morale down.

BELL RINGS

For this morning's task,

the girls and boys are making different bubble bars.

Tom and Lucas are making the Comforter.

To begin, pink and white mixtures are flattened into rectangles,

sandwiched together, and then rolled.

As you can see here, you've got a swirl of pink and white.

We're looking for a Swiss roll effect when you're rolling it up.

You then need to mark out 22 items

that roughly weigh between 200-215g,

and then shape it.

I expect to have 132 items.

A pink Swiss roll.

These two boys? Hmm...

Eloushka, would you like to take your two workers over to

their work station, and then I'll come and find you in a bit?

Fab.

Over with the demoted girls,

they're being asked to make another type of bubble bar.

Roll it around in the gold lustre,

press it firmly in the mould, making sure you fill every space,

and then place it in the tray.

You need to do 144 items each.

Are you actually joking?

That is effectively half of what I'd ask a good worker to do.

It's been nearly ten minutes and you're on your first tray still.

I thought we were doing quite well, but obviously not.

Back home in Bristol, 13-year-old Maddie loves to take things easy.

I've worked hard for like two hours,

and then the rest of the day I've just chilled.

Maddie certainly enjoys the laid-back life,

but her parents don't.

My parents do everything for me, really.

I think it's a parent's responsibility to do

all the housework and chores,

and make up the beds, and do all the dishes.

Mum Marilyn would love a bit of help, or even just some thanks.

Maddie does absolutely nothing at home.

Maddie's only just started running her own bath.

Back in bubble bars, Maddie's still taking a chillaxed approach.

When you put the glitter on, I feel like a princess.

We need to pick up the pace.

I think, as a supervisor, if your workers are slightly behind,

I think it is important to get involved, if you can,

and get them back on target.

But, with Eloushka's help, it's not long before they're back on track.

You guys seem to be getting to grips with this.

The boys, however, aren't on time at all, and they're struggling,

so I'm going to go and help them.

I want to have a go at making one of the bubble bars.

I probably won't get annoyed at them

if they're struggling with something,

cos I will have struggled with it too.

Try and get these edges a bit straighter,

What you're doing is grabbing them off Tom,

so Tom can't finish them properly,

and when you're grabbing them,

you're flinging them back on to the line as well,

so you just need to be more careful.

because, quite clearly, there and there, and I haven't done that.

I feel like our five have lulled me into a false sense of security.

The first five or ten minutes were absolutely fine.

Now it's a disaster.

The reality is, either Tom or Lucas have broken those boxes.

You have developed and learnt and figured out that, quite quickly,

you know, if you do start to pay attention

and you start to look at the bits of detail,

look at the teamwork around you,

yeah, you can start to actually get somewhere.

I can see now that it is harder than everybody thinks.

Like, I definitely thought it would be easier than this.

Tom...

When you first came, you seemed really interested and inquisitive.

It feels a little bit of a shame that it kind of sounds like

you lost your attention to detail.

Have you struggled in some tasks or all of the tasks?

Most of the tasks.

Maddie... How has Maddie done, for you, Matt?

You really wanted to do well. You just fell that little bit short.

I think my speed is improving,

but, obviously, I still need to work on it.

Lucas, how you feel you've done here at this factory?

I think I couldn't have done better than I did.

I feel that with a little bit more listening,

it would have helped you a bit more.

When it comes to the mucking about,

if you can strip that down a little bit and focus,

then that would be a good approach.

Yes.

How has Eloushka done here at the factory?

We gave you the opportunity to become the supervisor

in the second task.

You weren't just telling them what to do,

you were also showing them what to do.

I thought it was just going to be, you know, go in,

tell people what to do, they'll do it...

It wasn't that at all, you know,

it was knowing the balance of when to step in and help

and when to just leave them to do it themselves.

It was quite difficult.

Which leaves the question, Jack,

if they were over 18,

would you be willing to hire any of our five?

After hearing everything,

and understanding from the feedback how well you guys did

at the different tasks you were given,

I would hire three of you...

..and that'd be the girls.
