Episode 1 Sport Relief Does Glee Club

This is Glee Club, the musical extravaganza of the year.

We've been back on the road to find the ultimate young glee club.

Our judges viewed hundreds of auditions,

but selected only 24 acts to compete in the heats.

Soulmates blew us away last year, now it's time to find a new winner.

This is Sport Relief Does Glee Club 2012.

CHEERING

Please welcome your hosts, Sam and Mark.

-BOTH: Hello!

-And welcome to a brand new series of Glee Club.

-Ooh, it's exciting to be back.

-It is indeed.

-We have searched for miles...

-Sport Relief miles.

Yeah, Sport Relief miles, to bring you

the best glee clubs in the country.

That's right, 24 acts will be singing, grooving and bopping

to the latest pop tunes and giving it their all

right here on this very stage.

But who will take home the title of Sport Relief Does Glee Club 2012?

Our glee clubs have three expert judges they need to impress.

Boy, do they need to impress them. It's our judges.

I'm Carrie Grant. I'm a singer, TV presenter and vocal coach

and I've been in the industry for 30 years.

What I'm looking for this year is not just a glee club who can

impress me with their vocals but a glee club who really moved me,

who make me think, "I really believe in this club."

I'm David Grant, I've been a vocal coach for over 20 years.

For me, what makes a glee club stand out is attitude,

it's excellence, it's ability and that's what I want to see all of.

Hi, I'm Sisco Gomez, I'm an artistic director,

choreographer and dance instructor.

As a judge I take my job very seriously.

I won't be negative but I want to give them as much critique as I can.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Oh, yeah! Oh, yeah.

I feel so much more comfortable when you guys are sat there.

Guys, do you like our suits today?

-Yeah, they're...interesting.

-Right, brilliant(!)

Put down your cup of tea. It's time for the serious bit.

24 groups have made it through to the heats.

Today, three of those will battle it out for our experts,

who'll be scoring them on vocal ability, creativity and performance.

In the event of a tie, head judge Carrie will decide who goes through.

The acts with the top five scores across the heats

will then compete in the live final, where it'll be up to you at home

to vote for your favourite.

The winners take home this fantastic

And here are our three glee clubs competing today.

Selected by our judges from auditions all over the UK

and given feedback on areas to work on.

ALL: We are Raveheart and we're from Motherwell. Whoo!

We want to do it for ourselves and our school and each other

cos we're all really close, we want to show what we've got.

We've put a lot of work into trying to make it the best it can be

and I surely hope we make the judges think that as well.

ALL: Whoa....

We are Debutante and we're from London. Whoo!

We're, like, scared and excited as well at the same time.

We're not, like, serious. We have a bit of fun and be ourselves.

We just want to have fun, smile, show our faces

and show what we can do.

ALL: We're Musicality and we're from South Wales. Whoo!

Very excited to appear, we've been practising for ages now

and it'll just be fun to get out there.

Wow, well done, guys. What an opening to the show.

Let's see what the judges thought.

-Carrie, where you impressed by those performances?

-Oh, my goodness.

We have a really tough show. That was fantastic.

Raveheart, I love you've modelled

your costumes on mine today, very good!

I think that was a really good start.

I love the sound of your group.

The only thing I'd say is there's a slight difference

in the size of performance. You've got to match them

with one another, cos it's a little bit inconsistent.

Our middle group here, Debutante, you guys have a lovely vibe.

Lovely performance. The vocals were slightly out of tune.

When you hear it, you'll go, "Ooh!"

Very ambitious harmonies, but not quite in tune. For our third group,

Musicality, it was like being hit

by a wall of sound. What a fantastic sound. Fantastic.

OK, Sisco what are you hoping to see from our glee clubs today?

I was hoping to see a solid performance

and I think Musicality, you showed me that,

definitely. It was so solid. To me, it was perfect.

The tuning, the harmony. All so visible and so clear.

That was fantastic. I loved that. Brilliant.

David, what did you think of the vocals?

OK, I want to start by saying, Raveheart,

you guys, if you can sing like that solo, why is it that you weren't

jumping out and grabbing me by the throat in the last round

when you were an ensemble?

Really good soloists in there.

Musicality, I didn't hear enough. I didn't hear enough featured vocal.

It was good when you were singing individually, I needed more of it.

That's what this round is all about.

So, Debutante, the timing I thought was a little bit out in places

but I liked what I heard from your individual voices.

And that's what this round is all about, so well done.

Carrie, who stood out for you?

I have to say, Debutante stood out for me 100%, like, 120%.

Your soloists, beautiful tone,

each individual voice very different from the next.

Your third singer, my gosh, you are such a beautiful singer.

Really lovely voice.

-That might change things.

-Hmmm.

Remember, our judges have been scoring our glee clubs

on vocals, creativity and performance.

and see who's racked up the most points.

The scores after Round Two are, Raveheart on 96 points,

Debutante, 81 points and Musicality are storming ahead with 107 points.

With another 90 points available to each group in the last round,

it could all change.

OK. Round Three is the last chance for our groups to deliver

a stand-out performance.

They need to score as many points as they can to secure

a top spot on the Glee Club leaderboard.

Remember, only the top five from the heats will go through

to the live finals. OK, Mr D, can you please do the honours

and introduce the final round?

The groups will have to give it their all in their final chance

to build those all-important points.

What have you got to say about that?

Um, I don't know. I guess it is bad luck

but we've just got to try and do our dance basically.

We've got to follow our dance moves.

Yeah, that is true. You had to follow your dance.

Now how long did it take you to come up with those moves?

Erm, like, one day.

In, like, a few hours we had it down, sorted and just practising.

All today's groups have been awarded points for vocal ability,

creativity and performance across all three rounds.

Now it's over to the judges for their final comments.

Sisco, I think it's fair to say all our groups have performed

amazingly well today. Have there been any surprises?

I think the only surprises, if I'm being completely honest,

is that not everyone used their strengths to their advantages.

For me, Raveheart, your ensemble singing is amazing,

but overused your soloists.

Too many soloists, then we end up with weakness.

Our middle group solos were amazing, but some of the...

..our ensemble were forgetting to sing -

a few closed mouths when there shouldn't be.

Finally, one of the best ensemble sounds I've heard in a while.

Fantastic sound. You need to look at your soloists.
