Six inspiring, young singer-songwriters...

0:00:020:00:04

I'm really passionate about song writing.

0:00:040:00:05

Whenever I get back from school, I start to write new songs.

0:00:050:00:09

..and award-winning choirmaster Gareth Malone...

0:00:090:00:11

Ah! Did you feel the difference?

0:00:110:00:14

..team up with the music industry's most influential...

0:00:140:00:17

Really, really deliver those lyrics to the audience.

0:00:170:00:19

..to prepare for a big performance of historical significance.

0:00:190:00:23

Everyone, get under your desks immediately!

0:00:230:00:26

When there was an air raid, they would've probably thought,

0:00:260:00:29

"Am I going to die now?"

0:00:290:00:30

After weeks of fine tuning their musical skills...

0:00:300:00:33

Yeah, I loved it!

0:00:330:00:35

..and building up their World War I knowledge...

0:00:350:00:37

There are big rats in this trench.

0:00:370:00:40

..have any of them written a song worthy of commemorating

0:00:400:00:43

one of the biggest events in history?

0:00:430:00:45

This is something we'll remember the rest of our lives,

0:00:450:00:48

so I just don't want to mess it up.

0:00:480:00:50

Today,

0:00:520:00:53

the kids find final inspiration for their World War I songs...

0:00:530:00:57

-He was 19.

-I can't believe he was so young.

0:00:570:01:01

..they make waves on the radio...

0:01:010:01:03

That would be welcome in the Live Lounge any day.

0:01:030:01:06

..and one song is picked for the big performance.

0:01:060:01:09

The song we have chosen is...

0:01:090:01:12

It is the final week at Music Headquarters.

0:01:430:01:46

The six young songwriters are hard at work on their World War I songs.

0:01:460:01:52

In just 24 hours,

0:01:520:01:53

they will each have to perform what they've written,

0:01:530:01:55

and only one of their songs will be chosen for the big performance.

0:01:550:02:00

It would be amazing to know that my song had been chosen

0:02:000:02:03

and I'd be performing it in Belgium.

0:02:030:02:05

It would be fantastic.

0:02:050:02:07

It's the thing I would dream about - my song,

0:02:070:02:10

something I've written, to be represented in such an amazing way.

0:02:100:02:14

One of our songs is going to represent the nation. That's just...

0:02:140:02:18

It's like it's untrue. It's like a dream, really.

0:02:180:02:21

I'm really looking forward to hearing your songs.

0:02:210:02:24

And I know that it is going to be a very difficult decision.

0:02:240:02:27

But I will not be making that decision on my own.

0:02:270:02:29

I'll have two people to help me.

0:02:290:02:31

Judging the songs with Gareth will be two people

0:02:320:02:35

from the music industry.

0:02:350:02:36

The first person who is going to come and join me on the panel,

0:02:360:02:39

making the decision, is...

0:02:390:02:41

Katy B!

0:02:430:02:44

That's right, it's me, Katy B!

0:02:480:02:51

I will be heading to Music HQ later.

0:02:510:02:54

I started writing songs when I was 14,

0:02:540:02:56

and I've been lucky enough to have a number one selling best album.

0:02:560:03:00

So, Katy B is coming to help me make my decision.

0:03:000:03:02

There is one more person,

0:03:020:03:03

and that person is one of the most influential people in music today.

0:03:030:03:08

And they have sent you a message.

0:03:080:03:09

Hi there, I'm Jake Gosling, and I have produced Ed Sheeran

0:03:090:03:13

and Paloma Faith and I've worked with One Direction.

0:03:130:03:16

And I'm coming to hear your songs. So I will see you very soon.

0:03:160:03:19

Jake Gosling co-wrote Ed Sheeran's number one album

0:03:210:03:24

and has produced records for numerous stars.

0:03:240:03:27

He is a man who really knows the technical side of music.

0:03:280:03:31

He is coming to hear your songs.

0:03:310:03:33

In less than 24 hours,

0:03:330:03:35

two of the biggest names in the music industry

0:03:350:03:37

are coming to help me decide

0:03:370:03:39

which song is going to represent the nation.

0:03:390:03:41

There is a lot of pressure.

0:03:410:03:43

To impress me, Gareth and Jake, the kids must get the right

0:03:430:03:47

tone for the World War I commemorative event in Belgium.

0:03:470:03:50

So before they put the finishing touches to their songs,

0:03:520:03:55

Gareth is taking the singers to one last World War I location.

0:03:550:03:59

Brookwood Military Cemetery was the final resting place

0:03:590:04:03

for hundreds of soldiers who fought in the war.

0:04:030:04:06

It's the perfect place for the songwriters to reflect on what

0:04:060:04:10

they have written.

0:04:100:04:11

This is Brookwood Cemetery, which is

0:04:120:04:14

the largest war grave in this country.

0:04:140:04:17

It is perhaps not what you'd expect. I don't know how you feel about it.

0:04:170:04:20

But you can hear the bird songs, the sun's shining,

0:04:200:04:22

the graves are beautifully kept. Immaculate here.

0:04:220:04:25

There is something rather beautiful,

0:04:250:04:27

something rather still about this place.

0:04:270:04:29

Is it what you expected?

0:04:290:04:31

It's quite overwhelming to, like, see all of the graves just lined up.

0:04:310:04:36

This place is kind of like a very big respect cos it is showing them

0:04:360:04:40

that we care so much that we've made this whole place for them.

0:04:400:04:45

It does feel respectful, doesn't it?

0:04:450:04:47

This is your last chance to reflect on your songs.

0:04:470:04:50

So go around, have a look at the graves, have a think about whether

0:04:500:04:53

you have written something that is a fitting tribute to these people.

0:04:530:04:57

Around ten million men were killed fighting in World War I.

0:04:590:05:02

The bloodshed finally came to an end in 1918 when,

0:05:040:05:07

after a series of rattles, the German forces were defeated.

0:05:070:05:11

Thousands of men returned home to Britain as heroes.

0:05:130:05:16

And it was sworn that the soldiers who died on the battlefield

0:05:160:05:20

would never be forgotten.

0:05:200:05:22

It is a sobering place to be,

0:05:240:05:27

but I think it will help everyone

0:05:270:05:29

understand the sacrifice that was made in the First World War.

0:05:290:05:33

It says Ernest Alfred Hadley.

0:05:330:05:37

He was 19.

0:05:370:05:38

I can't believe he was so young.

0:05:380:05:40

That would be like my brother going to war, and that's really weird,

0:05:420:05:45

hearing that.

0:05:450:05:46

-Oh, look, this one was only 15.

-Yeah.

0:05:470:05:50

-He's only one year older than you.

-I know.

-And he went to war and died.

0:05:500:05:56

This boy could've had, like, 60 or maybe even 70 years ahead of him.

0:05:560:06:00

That's really sad.

0:06:000:06:02

To join the British Army, you had to be at least 18 years old.

0:06:020:06:06

But many chose to lie about their age

0:06:060:06:08

so that they could fight for their country.

0:06:080:06:10

He died on the 22nd of October, 1918.

0:06:100:06:13

If he had just survived, like, three weeks,

0:06:130:06:15

then he would have made it to the end of the war.

0:06:150:06:18

The bottom bit says, "A loving son."

0:06:180:06:21

It's really nice that they all have such personal messages behind them.

0:06:210:06:26

For one songwriter, there is

0:06:260:06:29

a headstone of particular significance.

0:06:290:06:31

He has the same name as my great-great-granddad, John Barber.

0:06:310:06:36

-Whoa.

-'Middlesex Regiment, 28th of October, 1918, age 33.

0:06:360:06:41

'Ever remembered by his adoring wife and children.'

0:06:410:06:44

Learning about his relative's role

0:06:450:06:47

in the war made a big impression on Ben.

0:06:470:06:49

That's him. 100 years ago.

0:06:490:06:52

It looks like one of those photos you see in a history lesson.

0:06:520:06:55

And now it's actually, like, real life, that...

0:06:550:06:57

That could've been me, that's my relative.

0:06:570:07:00

Now he has found the grave of a soldier who shares the same name.

0:07:010:07:05

-Do think it is actually him?

-I don't know.

0:07:050:07:08

Obviously, I don't know because, like,

0:07:080:07:10

it could just be a huge coincidence.

0:07:100:07:12

In fact, records show that Ben's ancestor was one of the lucky ones.

0:07:120:07:18

Not only did he survive the war,

0:07:180:07:20

but he lived into his 70s and had 13 children.

0:07:200:07:23

When we first came in, I saw a dozen and I thought,

0:07:270:07:30

"Oh, yeah, that's it."

0:07:300:07:32

But there's just endless amounts as you go on into the cemetery.

0:07:320:07:36

Each of them was a different person, had a different life.

0:07:360:07:40

The care that has been put into these grave stones, like,

0:07:400:07:42

they're all carved really well and everything.

0:07:420:07:45

And I think that's the kind of care we need to put into our songs.

0:07:450:07:49

I genuinely think that coming here has changed everything.

0:07:490:07:53

Which song can stand up and represent the nation

0:07:530:07:57

and sum up how we feel that the First World War?

0:07:570:08:00

It's a very big decision.

0:08:000:08:02

Whichever World War I song is chosen will be

0:08:080:08:11

sung by the kids at an international event in front of the royal family.

0:08:110:08:15

So far, the group have only performed at HQ,

0:08:150:08:18

so Gareth wants to help prepare them for the pressure.

0:08:180:08:21

Here we are, this is Broadcasting House, home of BBC Radio One.

0:08:210:08:26

ALL: Whoa!

0:08:260:08:28

Radio One is where some of the biggest names in the music

0:08:280:08:31

industry have performed their hits.

0:08:310:08:33

Hello, good morning. You are listening to BBC Radio One.

0:08:330:08:36

Today, it is the turn of our songwriters.

0:08:360:08:38

They will be performing for superstar DJ Dev Griffin.

0:08:380:08:42

-Hi, Dev.

-Hey, what is up, guys?

0:08:430:08:45

Welcome. How's it going? Is it quite exciting to be on Radio One?

0:08:450:08:48

ALL: Yes.

0:08:480:08:49

What kind of people have you had in here?

0:08:490:08:51

What's your coolest people so far?

0:08:510:08:53

Oh, man, we've had everybody.

0:08:530:08:55

Will Ferrell, Ne-Yo... We've had Harry Styles in.

0:08:550:08:59

Anyone who's anybody who makes music or is in film has been

0:08:590:09:03

to Radio One at least once.

0:09:030:09:04

And now it's us.

0:09:040:09:06

They have decided to sing Fly Away,

0:09:060:09:09

an up-beat pop song they wrote for Eliza Doolittle.

0:09:090:09:12

# Everything's gonna be OK

0:09:120:09:15

# It'll get better from here

0:09:150:09:18

# What's the point in worrying

0:09:180:09:22

# It'll be all right

0:09:220:09:25

# Use your wings to fly away

0:09:250:09:28

# Down the path to a better day

0:09:280:09:32

# Shed your worries Spread your wings

0:09:320:09:35

# Out of winter The sunlight springs

0:09:350:09:39

# Out of winter The sunlight springs. #

0:09:390:09:41

Woo! That was really good.

0:09:440:09:46

I tell you what, that would be welcome in the Live Lounge any day.

0:09:460:09:49

That was really good, guys. One thing I did notice,

0:09:490:09:51

though, is that body language is quite important.

0:09:510:09:54

When I stand and I am doing my show in there,

0:09:540:09:56

I'm very much, you know, hands out and about and stuff.

0:09:560:09:59

It just makes me feel like I can maybe project a little bit more.

0:09:590:10:02

If you shy away a little bit,

0:10:020:10:03

if you've got your hands in your pockets,

0:10:030:10:05

it might take away a little bit from the performance, you know?

0:10:050:10:08

You definitely want to stand confidently.

0:10:080:10:10

Do you ever get nervous when you're about to go live on air?

0:10:100:10:12

Every single show, every single time, just before I go on-air,

0:10:120:10:15

I get the butterflies in my stomach a little bit.

0:10:150:10:17

Do you have any advice for dealing with that?

0:10:170:10:20

Well, I would definitely say this to you guys.

0:10:200:10:22

When you perform in front of a crowd,

0:10:220:10:24

most of the people want you to do well.

0:10:240:10:27

Nobody is out there wanting you to fail or wanting you to mess

0:10:270:10:29

up or maybe hit a bum note. Most of the people are rooting for you.

0:10:290:10:33

They're already fans before you've even started.

0:10:330:10:36

It's great feedback from DJ Dev

0:10:360:10:38

and another amazing experience for the young songwriters.

0:10:380:10:41

Well, we've just been the Radio One and met Dev

0:10:410:10:45

and performed a song in front of him.

0:10:450:10:47

And it's like it's just a dream, really.

0:10:470:10:51

I think he was impressed. He did like our song, which was good.

0:10:510:10:55

That was, like, so cool!

0:10:550:10:56

I just want to go back in there and do that again. It's amazing.

0:10:560:11:00

We were right in the room were some of the biggest

0:11:000:11:02

stars in the world have been and performed their own music.

0:11:020:11:04

And I think our song, it stood up.

0:11:040:11:07

They did a good job, they held their own. I'm proud of them.

0:11:070:11:10

To inspire their song writing for the last five weeks,

0:11:160:11:19

the group have been immersed in all aspects of the First World War,

0:11:190:11:23

from life in the trenches to a 1914 school lesson.

0:11:230:11:28

Back at The Big Performance HQ, it is

0:11:280:11:30

the last chance for the young musicians to work on their tracks.

0:11:300:11:35

Soon they will each have to perform their songs,

0:11:350:11:38

and then one will be chosen for the group to sing in Belgium.

0:11:380:11:41

Everyone is making the final tweaks to their songs,

0:11:410:11:44

hoping that that will make the difference.

0:11:440:11:46

I think they've all realised that they really want this.

0:11:460:11:49

I'm really, really, really nervous.

0:11:490:11:52

Probably the most nervous I've ever been.

0:11:520:11:54

I think my song's got quite a good chance.

0:11:540:11:57

Well, I think everybody's has.

0:11:570:11:58

If they call out my name, if my song was chosen,

0:11:580:12:00

I think I'd feel so happy.

0:12:000:12:01

I know, if I mess this one up, I mess the whole thing up.

0:12:010:12:05

And it's not one of those things where I can just start again.

0:12:050:12:09

This is it, this is your final performance,

0:12:090:12:12

where you sing your song that you've worked so hard on.

0:12:120:12:14

You really have put a bit of yourself into those songs,

0:12:140:12:16

which I really appreciate.

0:12:160:12:18

You were all picked because you are great songwriters

0:12:180:12:20

and you are great singers, but I can only take one song.

0:12:200:12:24

I just want each one of you to sing your songs to the best

0:12:240:12:27

of your ability. Good luck, everyone.

0:12:270:12:30

The song for me that is going to

0:12:300:12:32

get it is the song that seems to make history leap out at you

0:12:320:12:36

and make you really feel like you are proud, like,

0:12:360:12:38

you want to respect the soldiers, like, you want to be part of it.

0:12:380:12:41

That's the song I'm looking for.

0:12:410:12:43

To help Gareth make his big decision

0:12:430:12:46

are two guest judges from the music industry.

0:12:460:12:49

The first is me, Katy B.

0:12:490:12:51

I'm hoping to bring my experience as a songwriter to the panel.

0:12:510:12:55

I'd really just like to see someone

0:12:550:12:57

who yet is connected to the lyrics, is connected to

0:12:570:13:01

the performance,

0:13:010:13:02

who kind of isn't worrying too much about what is going on around.

0:13:020:13:05

Joining us at Music HQ is Jake Gosling, a multiplatinum music

0:13:050:13:10

producer who has worked with One Direction and Ed Sheeran.

0:13:100:13:13

When I first heard about this, I was like, "This is a massive challenge."

0:13:130:13:18

So I'm... You now, I feel for them.

0:13:180:13:20

I'm like, "This is going to be quite an incredible thing to hear."

0:13:200:13:24

It's a very tough thing that I'm asking them to do.

0:13:300:13:33

-What makes a good song for you, Katy?

-I love to hear a story.

0:13:330:13:36

I love having different parts of the song, like visually,

0:13:360:13:40

someone taking on a journey. I love that.

0:13:400:13:43

Jake, you work with some of the biggest stars in the music

0:13:430:13:45

industry, what makes a song stand out for you?

0:13:450:13:47

For me, it's just all about the connection.

0:13:470:13:49

You've got to have that connection with the audience,

0:13:490:13:52

with the listener.

0:13:520:13:53

-I'm feeling nervous on their behalf now.

-Yeah.

0:13:530:13:55

-OK, shall we get the first one in?

-Let's do it.

0:13:550:13:57

First up is 12-year-old Sid,

0:13:570:14:00

one of the most creative musicians in the group.

0:14:000:14:02

In the past,

0:14:040:14:05

he has sometimes struggled to take his song writing seriously.

0:14:050:14:08

-Nobody is going to cry? Just Sid.

-I'm sorry!

-You can't carry on?

0:14:080:14:13

I'm concerned that he can sometimes be a bit silly

0:14:130:14:15

and kind of mess around.

0:14:150:14:17

Will his World War I song have the sincerity we are looking for?

0:14:180:14:22

# I hope you know

0:14:250:14:29

# What they did for us

0:14:290:14:31

# I hope you know

0:14:310:14:34

# And understand

0:14:340:14:38

# So look at us now

0:14:380:14:41

# United by what we faced

0:14:410:14:44

# Just look at how

0:14:440:14:47

# In the end we still embraced

0:14:470:14:51

# They built our future

0:14:510:14:53

# In their time

0:14:550:14:57

# So look at us now

0:14:570:15:01

# And don't let it go to waste

0:15:020:15:05

# Oh, yeah

0:15:050:15:08

# Don't let it go to waste. #

0:15:080:15:13

THEY CHEER

0:15:140:15:18

-Nice, wasn't it?

-He's got a beautiful voice.

-Yeah.

0:15:210:15:25

My performance went really well

0:15:250:15:27

and I think I really did the song justice.

0:15:270:15:29

It was my best performance so far.

0:15:290:15:31

-Good start.

-Great start.

-Good.

0:15:310:15:33

Next up, it's one of the most experienced performers, Jasmine.

0:15:330:15:37

When she first met Gareth,

0:15:370:15:39

her knowledge of World War I left a lot to be desired.

0:15:390:15:42

I think it lasted for 37 days.

0:15:420:15:47

37 days?

0:15:470:15:48

-Uh...

-No, it didn't, it was four years.

-Oh.

0:15:480:15:52

Has she learnt enough to write a song that fits

0:15:520:15:55

the historic occasion?

0:15:550:15:56

# Soldiers fought for us

0:15:580:16:01

# And risked their lives for us

0:16:020:16:06

# And hope was all they had

0:16:060:16:09

# To get by

0:16:090:16:12

# To get by

0:16:120:16:15

# The war ends

0:16:150:16:18

# The peace came

0:16:180:16:19

# And the poppies grow

0:16:190:16:23

# From loudness comes silence

0:16:230:16:27

# Now we'll head home

0:16:270:16:32

# The war ends

0:16:320:16:34

# The peace came

0:16:340:16:36

# And the poppies grow

0:16:360:16:39

# From fighting comes friendship

0:16:400:16:44

# Now we'll head home. #

0:16:440:16:48

-Very nice, yes!

-Beautiful.

0:16:510:16:53

I'm really happy with my performance,

0:16:550:16:57

I think it went really well.

0:16:570:16:59

I think it sounded really professional.

0:16:590:17:01

It did sound really pro, yeah.

0:17:010:17:03

It sounded really crafted.

0:17:030:17:05

Facing us next is Molly,

0:17:050:17:07

a classically trained singer with a flawless voice.

0:17:070:17:11

In her past performances, she has struggled to show emotion.

0:17:110:17:15

I think your voice is so lovely.

0:17:150:17:17

-Sometimes I look at you and you look quite serious.

-I don't mean to be.

0:17:170:17:20

The thing is, I love singing, but I concentrate

0:17:200:17:23

and I just forget to show it on my face.

0:17:230:17:26

Will her World War I song be moving enough for such an important event?

0:17:260:17:30

# Soldiers marched away

0:17:330:17:38

# Families hoping they would be safe

0:17:380:17:42

# At Flanders Field and the Somme

0:17:420:17:47

# Now the poppies still stand strong

0:17:470:17:51

# Four years went by

0:17:520:17:55

# Flags painting the skies

0:17:570:18:01

# The tears will dry

0:18:010:18:05

# We will stand together

0:18:050:18:10

# Friendship and unity

0:18:100:18:13

# One community

0:18:130:18:18

# We move forward as one. #

0:18:180:18:25

-Yay!

-Well done, Molly.

0:18:250:18:27

Yeah, it went quite well.

0:18:270:18:29

I think I could've done better, but I think I did OK.

0:18:290:18:33

-I really liked some of these lyrics a lot.

-Yeah, me too.

-Really clever.

0:18:330:18:37

Yeah, I thought the same.

0:18:370:18:39

Ben is the next young talent to put his commemorative song to the test.

0:18:390:18:42

He is a charismatic performer,

0:18:420:18:45

but his fidgeting on stage has been a worry to Gareth.

0:18:450:18:48

Ben, you can't seem to stand still for a second. It's just like...

0:18:480:18:51

You've just burnt the bottom of your feet or something.

0:18:510:18:54

Can he keep his composure now when it really counts?

0:18:540:18:59

# Sun or rain, does it matter?

0:18:590:19:01

# They both lead to pain

0:19:010:19:05

# Front or behind, does it matter?

0:19:050:19:07

# There's nowhere to hide

0:19:070:19:11

# Throw your things into that trench

0:19:110:19:14

# And smile your face away

0:19:140:19:17

# Always laugh and never cry

0:19:170:19:19

# And hope today's the day

0:19:190:19:23

# Today's the day that we can say

0:19:230:19:26

# That the war's finally over

0:19:260:19:28

# Today's the day that we will sail

0:19:280:19:31

# Towards the Cliffs of Dover

0:19:310:19:34

# Let's take a moment now just for one thing to remember

0:19:340:19:40

# Serve your duty well

0:19:400:19:43

# And our respect will never end. #

0:19:430:19:47

Great. Really good.

0:19:470:19:49

Feeling so good.

0:19:490:19:51

I just want to do it again and again and again and again and again.

0:19:510:19:54

It was actually so fun.

0:19:540:19:55

-I love that chorus.

-Because it kind of had that swing to it.

0:19:550:19:59

Yeah, it's really nice.

0:19:590:20:01

Molly from Huddersfield has an amazingly powerful voice.

0:20:010:20:05

But in front of Conor Maynard, she was one of the singers who

0:20:050:20:09

struggled to remember the words and melody.

0:20:090:20:11

Guys, uh, did that go perfectly?

0:20:110:20:14

It was really awkward, forgetting the words,

0:20:140:20:16

but, um, yeah, I think we did well to carry on.

0:20:160:20:20

If she forgets her lyrics here, her song won't stand a chance.

0:20:210:20:25

# Once there... # Oh, can I start again?

0:20:320:20:35

The nerves have got to Molly. Can she pull it together?

0:20:350:20:40

# Where once was war

0:20:400:20:44

# Now there's peace

0:20:440:20:47

# The battle is over

0:20:470:20:50

# The friendship has won

0:20:500:20:53

# The tides, the mud

0:20:530:20:57

# Now the poppies blossomed path

0:20:570:21:03

# Their lives were taken

0:21:060:21:09

# They fought, they fell

0:21:090:21:12

# Stand up

0:21:120:21:14

# Be proud

0:21:140:21:16

# They were all our heroes

0:21:160:21:19

# The light, the peace

0:21:190:21:22

# We walk ahead as one. #

0:21:220:21:26

Well done, Molly.

0:21:260:21:28

-I love it.

-Gutsy performance.

0:21:280:21:32

Because I had to start again,

0:21:320:21:34

I think it went quite badly, to be honest.

0:21:340:21:38

I feel a bit, like, emotional, sort of thing.

0:21:380:21:41

-Yeah, it had the drama to it.

-Yeah.

0:21:410:21:43

Last but not least, it is 11-year-old Sam,

0:21:430:21:46

the youngest of the songwriters.

0:21:460:21:49

Learning about World War I has had a big impact on him.

0:21:490:21:52

It's quite sad cos it's, like, the dad writing to his son.

0:21:520:21:56

He doesn't know what it will be like in France when he's fighting.

0:21:560:22:00

But has he been able to turn his experience into a song that

0:22:000:22:04

reflects the time?

0:22:040:22:06

# On French soil now, rifle in hand

0:22:060:22:10

# Fighting for my country

0:22:100:22:14

# My country that I had

0:22:140:22:17

# To leave behind

0:22:170:22:20

# Those who fought in war

0:22:230:22:26

# Shall all come together

0:22:260:22:32

# Soon the war will end

0:22:320:22:35

# And there will be peace in every nation

0:22:350:22:40

# And I hope in time

0:22:410:22:44

# That they will remember the soldiers that fought and fell

0:22:440:22:50

# In the Great War. #

0:22:530:22:55

-Well done.

-Yeah!

-Well done.

0:22:550:22:59

I really sort of felt like he got into character there.

0:23:000:23:03

-Yeah.

-Yeah. Don't you think?

0:23:030:23:05

All of the songwriters have done themselves proud.

0:23:050:23:08

But now it is out of their hands.

0:23:080:23:10

OK, the moment of truth, it's decision time.

0:23:100:23:13

Gareth can only choose one of the six songs for the group to

0:23:130:23:16

perform at the World War I commemoration in Belgium.

0:23:160:23:20

What about this one?

0:23:200:23:21

I really liked parts of it, but just not all of it.

0:23:210:23:25

Definitely the lyric at the end, I felt, didn't quite fit, did it?

0:23:250:23:29

How about him?

0:23:290:23:30

-I just see great potential in him.

-Yeah, me too.

-Great ability.

0:23:300:23:33

There was a really sort of unusual melody,

0:23:330:23:35

which I thought was really beautiful.

0:23:350:23:37

This is not an easy decision.

0:23:370:23:39

Because I think a lot of the songs had very, very strong elements.

0:23:390:23:42

I do feel a sense of responsibility to choose the right song.

0:23:420:23:45

Is there one song for you that leaps out?

0:23:450:23:47

I'm sort of torn between two.

0:23:470:23:50

-I know what one I like.

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-You're there. Where are you?

0:23:500:23:54

Do you know what? I am leaning towards this.

0:23:540:23:57

HE SIGHS

0:23:570:23:59

Now it is just a question of making that decision.

0:24:010:24:03

-I've got a feeling this with that whole chorus...

-You can feel it?

0:24:030:24:07

-I can feel it.

-Yes, I think that's it.

0:24:070:24:10

I think we've made a decision, and I think it is a good decision.

0:24:100:24:12

-Thank you.

-Yep.

-Good work, team.

-Good work.

0:24:120:24:15

OK, come back in.

0:24:150:24:16

Weeks of hard work and now it has all come down to this -

0:24:170:24:21

which song will be representing the nation?

0:24:210:24:24

Firstly, can I say, thank you very much.

0:24:260:24:28

We all really enjoyed the performances

0:24:280:24:30

and I think for all of us it was actually a really difficult decision.

0:24:300:24:33

-Really nice.

-Yeah, I was so blown away just by everyone's talent.

0:24:330:24:38

The music in general was really, really,

0:24:380:24:41

really strong and I enjoyed every single performance so much.

0:24:410:24:44

You've gone away, you've written these songs, lyrics, melodies,

0:24:440:24:48

you worked really hard, so well done.

0:24:480:24:51

I felt really proud of you.

0:24:510:24:53

I know where these songs started and I know how far they've come

0:24:530:24:56

and how much crafting and working that it's taken.

0:24:560:24:59

Really pleased. And thank you.

0:24:590:25:01

Right.

0:25:010:25:03

It's crunch time.

0:25:030:25:04

The song we've chosen is...

0:25:060:25:08

..Stand Up Be Proud, by Molly.

0:25:160:25:19

Well done!

0:25:200:25:22

Congratulations, well done. A fantastic song, well done.

0:25:220:25:25

I just can't believe my song is going to represent the nation.

0:25:270:25:31

It's just beyond words.

0:25:310:25:32

I just can't even describe how I'm feeling right now.

0:25:320:25:35

Sometimes you hear a song and you can just imagine it in the occasion,

0:25:350:25:40

and I could really tell that

0:25:400:25:42

when Molly sang that song, that everyone is going to get behind it.

0:25:420:25:45

It's the right decision.

0:25:450:25:47

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed, but I am also really,

0:25:470:25:50

really pleased for Molly, cos her song really, really deserves it.

0:25:500:25:53

The experience with Gareth and everybody has been amazing.

0:25:530:25:57

It has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.

0:25:570:26:00

Thank you so much!

0:26:000:26:03

I am really excited about the next part of the adventure and I'm

0:26:030:26:07

just glad that we're all going to be able to sing together again.

0:26:070:26:09

Very well done, Molly.

0:26:090:26:11

I think yours just picked it because it's an anthem and it feels really

0:26:110:26:15

strong, and we all had an instinctive emotional reaction to that.

0:26:150:26:19

So very, very well done.

0:26:190:26:20

And of course now, it is no longer just about you,

0:26:200:26:22

it becomes our song, and we're all going to sing it together.

0:26:220:26:26

Very, very exciting.

0:26:260:26:27

Now as a very special treat for all the hard work we've done,

0:26:270:26:30

Katy is going to sing her single Still.

0:26:300:26:33

THEY CHEER

0:26:330:26:36

# You chose the simple life

0:26:420:26:45

# My love was way too much for you

0:26:450:26:48

# To bear

0:26:480:26:49

# And left our world to end right there

0:26:490:26:53

# But I still hear you whispering

0:26:550:26:58

# My name

0:26:580:27:00

# Surely there's a part unchanged

0:27:000:27:04

# How could you be so far away

0:27:040:27:07

# When I still seek your face

0:27:070:27:10

# Like it was only yesterday

0:27:100:27:15

# And although you're out of sight

0:27:150:27:18

# Would you still be the same

0:27:180:27:20

# If I was next to you tonight

0:27:200:27:23

# Still

0:27:250:27:28

# Still on my mind now

0:27:280:27:31

# Still

0:27:310:27:33

# You still know how to make me feel

0:27:330:27:38

# How come these wounds...? #

0:27:380:27:41

'The songwriters have achieved so much,

0:27:410:27:43

'but there is still work to be done.

0:27:430:27:45

'Next time, they perform Molly's song together at the commemoration

0:27:450:27:49

'of one of the biggest events in world history.'

0:27:490:27:52

Having the young generation singing there, singing about the future,

0:27:520:27:55

singing about hope that comes out of such a terrible

0:27:550:27:58

time in our history, I want to get that right.

0:27:580:28:00

So I feel a great responsibility, actually.

0:28:000:28:03

# You're still on my mind now Still. #
