Kites The Let's Go Club

This is the Let's Go Club, but mini.

Expect making, exploring,

We've only got five minutes,

so get ready for more fun from the Let's Go Club.

-Today, we're finding out how to make kites.

We're meeting Paul, who knows lots about kites.

-Hello.

Is it hard to make a kite?

Some kites are quite complicated to make, like this one.

It has lots of different shaped pieces in it.

It has be stitched together. Can you tell what this kite is?

-A pterodactyl.

-That's right.

-Why do some kites have long tails?

To keep them stable and help them fly straight.

And they look nice and pretty.

This is the type of kite we're going to make - a Delta kite.

The first thing we do is fasten this triangle

to the bottom of that triangle.

And we're going to put the tape from that end to that end.

Can you push the tape down for me nice and tight now?

What are we going to do to make the kite nice and strong?

-Sticks.

-If you hold that and stick it on there.

Perfect. We need to roll this over now. That's right.

Can you stick that down there?

This is really fun.

We need to turn it round now and stick the other side the same.

Hold it nice and tight there. Pull.

Then we have to put one more piece in. That has to go down the middle.

It's still a little bit floppy this way.

We've stitched some loops of line through to hold the last stick.

That has to hook onto that piece of string.

Yep, perfect.

Can kites only come in one shape, or in any shape?

Lots of different shapes,

but some shapes are more difficult to make fly than others.

We've finished the kite. It looks wonderful.

All you need to do now is decorate it.

That's nice and big and bold, so you can see it in the sky.

-What do you think of the kite, Jamie?

-Really good.

-Good.

OK, I think you've done a great job. Look at that. Fantastic.

-Do you think it will fly?

-I think so. I know just the place to try.

This looks like a good place.

You need to have the wind on your back and the kite this way.

The wind's coming from behind me, blowing that way. OK?

Now, Chloe, you hold on to this.

Jamie, hold on to the line. This line here, that's right.

We'll let the line out carefully. Unwind the line for us. That's it.

-Whoa!

-Unwind it from the end, like that. That's it.

THEY SQUEAL

-Bit higher!

-Higher?

Do heavy kites fly lower than light kites?

Heavy kites need more wind than light kites.

So, yes, they do fly lower if there's not as much wind.

THEY LAUGH

-Let a bit more line out.

-Whoo!

It's, like, all the way in the sky!

-Is it a long way?

-Yeah!
