We've only got five minutes,

0:00:110:00:12

so get ready for more fun from The Let's Go Club.

0:00:120:00:16

Let's go!

0:00:180:00:19

I'm Isabel.

0:00:210:00:22

I'm Alex.

0:00:220:00:23

-BOTH:

-Today we're having a forest adventure.

0:00:230:00:27

Lots of things live in this forest.

0:00:270:00:30

It's full of trees, plants, birds and insects.

0:00:300:00:33

Peter works in this forest.

0:00:330:00:36

He knows all about the animals and plants that live here.

0:00:360:00:40

Is it easy to live in a forest?

0:00:400:00:42

It's easy for plants and trees to live in the forest

0:00:420:00:45

cos they get energy from the sun

0:00:450:00:47

and their nutrients and water from the ground.

0:00:470:00:50

It's also very easy for insects to live here

0:00:500:00:53

cos they eat all the fallen leaves from trees.

0:00:530:00:56

And they live under the logs where it's cool and damp.

0:00:560:00:59

Do we know what these are?

0:00:590:01:01

-Millipede.

-Yes.

0:01:010:01:02

-And this one?

-A woodlouse?

0:01:020:01:04

A woodlouse, yeah.

0:01:040:01:05

How can we live in the forest?

0:01:050:01:07

Well, first thing we need to do is stay warm.

0:01:070:01:09

One way we can stay warm is by building a fire.

0:01:090:01:12

The first thing we need to get our fire going is some bark.

0:01:120:01:16

And the bark from this tree peels off really easily.

0:01:160:01:19

We need to collect some of these very thin, long twigs.

0:01:190:01:22

We're looking for sticks that snap really easily.

0:01:220:01:25

If they bend it means they're full of water

0:01:250:01:28

and won't burn properly.

0:01:280:01:30

We're in a special safe area for building our fire, here.

0:01:350:01:39

Our fire's ready to light now.

0:01:450:01:47

Fires can be a bit dangerous,

0:01:470:01:49

so we always get a grown-up to light it.

0:01:490:01:51

So I'm going to get this lit.

0:01:510:01:53

Could you guys just sit on these two logs while I do that?

0:01:530:01:57

Our fire doesn't just keep us warm, it can help us cook our food.

0:01:570:02:00

-So would you like to cook a teacake?

-Yeah!

-Brilliant.

0:02:000:02:04

To cook our teacake we need a cooking tool.

0:02:040:02:07

We need to start with a long straight stick like this,

0:02:070:02:10

and we need another tool to turn this into our cooking tool.

0:02:100:02:14

Do you know what it is?

0:02:140:02:15

-Potato peeler.

-It is.

0:02:150:02:17

And we're going to use it to peel the end of our stick

0:02:170:02:21

and turn it into a point.

0:02:210:02:22

We hold the peeler close to the metal bit

0:02:220:02:25

and we put our thumb over the top of our fingers.

0:02:250:02:28

Then we get our stick and point it towards the ground

0:02:280:02:31

and take thin little cuts off.

0:02:310:02:34

Each time you take one of those cuts,

0:02:340:02:36

you need to turn that stick.

0:02:360:02:38

That's it. You're getting it.

0:02:380:02:40

Is it easy?

0:02:400:02:42

It's hard but...

0:02:420:02:45

you do get the hang of it once you've, like, done it.

0:02:450:02:49

OK, let me see. I think you're about finished.

0:02:490:02:52

-Are you finished? Is it good and pointy, do you think?

-Yeah.

0:02:520:02:55

We have to sit back on our heels

0:02:550:02:57

so that we're far away from the fire.

0:02:570:02:59

That's why we have nice long sticks -

0:02:590:03:02

so that it's safe for us to put our food over.

0:03:020:03:04

So if you stretch your arms out...

0:03:090:03:12

Oh, that looks so nice.

0:03:120:03:14

This is quite nice.

0:03:150:03:17

Mmm, really nice!

0:03:180:03:20

The most important thing to learn how to do outdoors

0:03:200:03:23

is to make a shelter.

0:03:230:03:25

A shelter will not only keep you warm but dry as well.

0:03:250:03:28

-Are you ready to come and give this a go?

-Yes!

0:03:280:03:31

To build shelters, we'll need lots of sticks like these,

0:03:310:03:35

and there are lots of them around here.

0:03:350:03:37

But we'll also need... quite a few of these leaves here.

0:03:370:03:41

What do you think we'll need these for?

0:03:410:03:43

Is it for the roof?

0:03:430:03:44

They make our den waterproof

0:03:440:03:46

and keep all the water on the outside

0:03:460:03:48

so we stay nice and dry on the inside.

0:03:480:03:50

Yeah, let's start putting them on like this.

0:03:550:03:58

And the trick is to get them nice and slanted

0:03:580:04:01

so that any rain will go off them.

0:04:010:04:05

Is that about the right size to go there? Yeah.

0:04:050:04:08

That's about perfect.

0:04:080:04:09

That just hooks on to the top here.

0:04:090:04:12

Sometimes it needs two layers.

0:04:120:04:14

You want to plug up as many of these holes as you can.

0:04:140:04:18

-This one looks kind of good.

-And there we go,

0:04:180:04:21

-there is our flag.

-Yeah!

0:04:210:04:23

Well done.

0:04:230:04:24

You've done a great job of your shelter.

0:04:270:04:29

What do you think about it?

0:04:290:04:31

I think that it would be actually good

0:04:310:04:34

to sleep in for a few nights.

0:04:340:04:35

Thanks for our forest adventure.

0:04:350:04:38

You are very welcome.

0:04:380:04:40

You can be part of The Let's Go Club too.

0:04:410:04:44
