Today in the Clubhouse we're going to the movies.

Let's go as Leo and Natalia find out how to be Foley artists.

Those are people who know how to make amazing sound effects.

We discover what all those names mean at the end of a film.

Who is the Best Boy anyway?

And we learn some of the tricks that bring puppets to life.

-Hi, my name's Leo.

-And my name's Natalia.

-Today we're going to be Foley artists.

A Foley artist is someone

who makes and records everyday sound effects

that are added to movies, television and radio shows.

This is Barnaby. He's an expert at making the recording sound effects

that have been used in lots of famous movies and TV shows.

Hello, Let's Goers. Welcome to my Foley studio.

Why do some movies need extra sound effects?

Adding sound effects helps us to enjoy the movie more

and some cartoons don't have any sounds at all

-so we make them up.

-What do you do in the studio?

This is where we record most of the sounds.

Can me and Leo help you record some sounds today?

Yeah, that's a great idea.

We've got a film that we need to make some sounds for. Will you help?

-Yes.

-Yes.

So, Let's Goers, Foley is all about listening.

We have to concentrate and think about what sounds we need to make.

Cue the movie.

It's a bird flapping its wings.

People walking through the snow.

It's a roaring fire.

Those pigs are eating lots of dirt.

So we need to make sounds for all those clips?

That's right and I'll show you where we need to start. Come on.

Welcome to the props store.

Is this where you keep all your things to make the sounds?

That's right, Leo. Who can remember what sounds we need to make?

-Birds flapping wings and a pig eating.

-That's right.

Let's have a look and see if there's anything we can use to make them.

This doesn't sound like a bird.

No, that won't do.

Natalia, why don't you give those gloves a flap?

And, Leo, why don't you give that wet cloth a squeeze?

These sound like birds' wings.

Barnaby, this sounds like a pig eating.

So we've got all the props we need.

Let's get in the studio and record some sounds.

We're recording, Natalia.

Is the sound being recorded there?

Yeah, it's being recorded on the microphone.

We're going to record the fire next, Natalia.

All the way. That's right.

Oh, I can hear it through this.

It sounds like he's walking in snow.

Now all the sounds have been added,

we're going to watch the movie again.

Hopefully we've been good Foley artists today.

It sounds like you're flapping.

Wow! It sounds like they're walking through snow.

Wow! Very cool.

That's your one.

That sounds so funny!

We are such good Foley artists.

Well done, you two. That was brilliant.

Let's go!

What incredible sounds Leo and Natalia made

and you'd never guess they weren't the real thing.

Now it's quick trick time and today, inspired by movies,

we're going to make a two-page animation.

For this you'll need a pencil, a crayon and a pad of paper.

Think of something to draw with something you can change.

I'm going to draw a face.

Now, I don't want to draw on the top sheet of paper.

I want to turn this over.

I'm going to draw on the second sheet of paper.

Now I'm going to draw a clown face

and I'm going to give him a really big smile.

There's his hat.

Lovely. Bobble on there.

Lots of hair.

Now you don't have to draw a clown face. You could draw anything.

Now when you've finished that, turn the first piece of paper back over.

This time I'm going to trace over my clown face, but change one thing.

Instead of giving him a happy face, I'm going to give him a sad face.

After you've done that, take your pencil

and roll the top piece of paper around your pencil like this.

And watch this.

Happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad.

There you have it. A simple but brilliant two-page animation.

Did you see his face moving? That's my first movie

and I didn't even have to say, "Lights, camera, action!"

# A Foley artist records the noises that make a film sound cool

# They use vegetables and dustbin lids and sometimes gravel too. #

# And what about grips or key grips?

# Are they the same as hair grips?

# No, they move equipment on the set and there's lots of that to do.

# So many people that work to get a movie made

# From writing scripts through to finding funny props

# Clapper loaders, food stylists, stagehands and more

# The work is hard, it never stops. #

# So can you tell me more about those names at the end of movies?

# Who are they? I'd really love to know more. #

-# Well, a boom operator records the sound.

-What this kind of boom?

# No, a boom moves a microphone close to the sound a film must get.

# A dolly grip moves cameras.

-# What this kind of dolly?

-No!

# A dolly is a special cart that wheels the cameras around the set/

# And a Best Boy helps the person in charge of all the electrical stuff.

-# Can a Best Boy be a girl, though?

-Of course they can, you bet.

Have you all got your puppets?

I've got mine as well. Looking good.

Julia, you bring Rocket to life, so where do we start?

It's best to start with a simple puppet so like you've got

with balls on a string with eyes drawn on.

Makes it easier while you're practising.

-Have you given your puppet a name?

-Max.

-Max, great.

-Cookie.

-Very good.

-Amber.

-Very nice.

So next thing you need to think about is your puppet's expressions.

Look at each other's faces and copy some expressions.

-You can use other people's faces?

-Absolutely, yeah.

Give it a go with your puppets and let's see some of your expressions.

Oh, very excited. Very nice.

Can we maybe try a bit of sad?

Once you've got your expressions sorted, what do we do now?

Next you need to think about who your puppet's talking to.

So it needs to be looking at the person it's talking to.

We call that an eye-line

and make sure it's looking at the person or puppet it's talking to.

So, Julia, how do we put on a show?

Very important, the audience has come to see your puppet.

They haven't come to see you, so put your arm really up high in the air

and then hide behind something so that you won't be seen.

Now that we've got the expressions and know we have to hide,

should we get behind this chest and give it a go?
