Let's go!

0:01:310:01:32

Let's go!

0:01:360:01:38

-Hi, my name's Leo.

-And my name's Natalia.

0:01:380:01:41

-Today we're going to be Foley artists.

-Let's go!

0:01:410:01:45

A Foley artist is someone

0:01:450:01:47

who makes and records everyday sound effects

0:01:470:01:51

that are added to movies, television and radio shows.

0:01:510:01:57

This is Barnaby. He's an expert at making the recording sound effects

0:01:570:02:03

that have been used in lots of famous movies and TV shows.

0:02:030:02:08

Hello, Let's Goers. Welcome to my Foley studio.

0:02:080:02:11

Why do some movies need extra sound effects?

0:02:110:02:14

Adding sound effects helps us to enjoy the movie more

0:02:140:02:17

and some cartoons don't have any sounds at all

0:02:170:02:20

-so we make them up.

-What do you do in the studio?

0:02:200:02:23

This is where we record most of the sounds.

0:02:230:02:26

Can me and Leo help you record some sounds today?

0:02:260:02:29

Yeah, that's a great idea.

0:02:290:02:30

We've got a film that we need to make some sounds for. Will you help?

0:02:300:02:34

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:02:340:02:36

So, Let's Goers, Foley is all about listening.

0:02:360:02:39

We have to concentrate and think about what sounds we need to make.

0:02:390:02:43

Cue the movie.

0:02:430:02:45

It's a bird flapping its wings.

0:02:450:02:47

People walking through the snow.

0:02:490:02:51

It's a roaring fire.

0:02:530:02:55

Those pigs are eating lots of dirt.

0:02:560:02:59

So we need to make sounds for all those clips?

0:02:590:03:02

That's right and I'll show you where we need to start. Come on.

0:03:020:03:06

Welcome to the props store.

0:03:060:03:08

Is this where you keep all your things to make the sounds?

0:03:080:03:11

That's right, Leo. Who can remember what sounds we need to make?

0:03:110:03:15

-Birds flapping wings and a pig eating.

-That's right.

0:03:150:03:20

Let's have a look and see if there's anything we can use to make them.

0:03:200:03:24

This doesn't sound like a bird.

0:03:310:03:35

No, that won't do.

0:03:350:03:37

Natalia, why don't you give those gloves a flap?

0:03:370:03:40

And, Leo, why don't you give that wet cloth a squeeze?

0:03:400:03:44

These sound like birds' wings.

0:03:450:03:47

Barnaby, this sounds like a pig eating.

0:03:490:03:53

So we've got all the props we need.

0:03:530:03:55

Let's get in the studio and record some sounds.

0:03:550:03:59

We're recording, Natalia.

0:03:590:04:01

Is the sound being recorded there?

0:04:060:04:08

Yeah, it's being recorded on the microphone.

0:04:080:04:11

We're going to record the fire next, Natalia.

0:04:110:04:14

All the way. That's right.

0:04:170:04:20

Oh, I can hear it through this.

0:04:250:04:27

It sounds like he's walking in snow.

0:04:290:04:31

Now all the sounds have been added,

0:04:310:04:34

we're going to watch the movie again.

0:04:340:04:36

Hopefully we've been good Foley artists today.

0:04:360:04:40

It sounds like you're flapping.

0:04:420:04:45

Wow! It sounds like they're walking through snow.

0:04:460:04:50

Wow! Very cool.

0:04:520:04:55

That's your one.

0:04:570:04:58

That sounds so funny!

0:05:000:05:03

We are such good Foley artists.

0:05:030:05:06

Well done, you two. That was brilliant.

0:05:060:05:09

# The Let's Go Club. #

0:05:090:05:11

Let's go!

0:05:110:05:13

What incredible sounds Leo and Natalia made

0:05:130:05:16

and you'd never guess they weren't the real thing.

0:05:160:05:19

Now it's quick trick time and today, inspired by movies,

0:05:190:05:22

we're going to make a two-page animation.

0:05:220:05:25

For this you'll need a pencil, a crayon and a pad of paper.

0:05:250:05:29

Think of something to draw with something you can change.

0:05:290:05:32

I'm going to draw a face.

0:05:320:05:34

Now, I don't want to draw on the top sheet of paper.

0:05:340:05:37

I want to turn this over.

0:05:370:05:39

I'm going to draw on the second sheet of paper.

0:05:390:05:42

Now I'm going to draw a clown face

0:05:420:05:44

and I'm going to give him a really big smile.

0:05:440:05:48

There's his hat.

0:05:480:05:50

Lovely. Bobble on there.

0:05:500:05:52

Lots of hair.

0:05:520:05:55

Now you don't have to draw a clown face. You could draw anything.

0:05:550:05:59

Now when you've finished that, turn the first piece of paper back over.

0:05:590:06:04

This time I'm going to trace over my clown face, but change one thing.

0:06:040:06:08

Instead of giving him a happy face, I'm going to give him a sad face.

0:06:080:06:13

After you've done that, take your pencil

0:06:160:06:18

and roll the top piece of paper around your pencil like this.

0:06:180:06:23

And watch this.

0:06:260:06:27

Happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad.

0:06:270:06:31

There you have it. A simple but brilliant two-page animation.

0:06:310:06:35

Did you see his face moving? That's my first movie

0:06:350:06:38

and I didn't even have to say, "Lights, camera, action!"

0:06:380:06:41

That's your quick trick done.

0:06:410:06:43

Why don't you have a go and send us a video of your animation?

0:06:430:06:47

We would love to see it.

0:06:470:06:48

Grab a grown-up and go to the CBeebies website

0:06:480:06:51

and click on the Let's Go Club.

0:06:510:06:53

Everyone's got a favourite film.

0:06:530:06:55

Next time you watch yours,

0:06:550:06:56

wait until the very end and you'll see lots of names going by.

0:06:560:07:00

These are the people who made the film like the dolly grip,

0:07:000:07:04

the spark, the gaffer and their jobs are...

0:07:040:07:07

Oh, I'm going to need some help with this.

0:07:070:07:11

# The Let's Go Club. #

0:07:110:07:13

# I have a question

0:07:130:07:15

# Have you ever watched till the end of a movie

0:07:150:07:18

# And noticed a long, long list of names? #

0:07:180:07:21

Mmm-mm.

0:07:210:07:23

# I can tell you what those names are at the end of a movie

0:07:230:07:28

# Who are they? Time to find out. #

0:07:280:07:31

Let's go!

0:07:310:07:32

# The list of names at the end of every film you see

0:07:320:07:36

# Is called the credits and it shows what people do

0:07:360:07:41

# Some of the jobs on that list have really funny names

0:07:410:07:46

# I'll explain some of them to you. #

0:07:460:07:49

Please do.

0:07:490:07:50

# A Foley artist records the noises that make a film sound cool

0:07:500:07:54

# They use vegetables and dustbin lids and sometimes gravel too. #

0:07:540:07:59

# And what about grips or key grips?

0:07:590:08:01

# Are they the same as hair grips?

0:08:010:08:03

# No, they move equipment on the set and there's lots of that to do.

0:08:030:08:09

# So many people that work to get a movie made

0:08:090:08:14

# From writing scripts through to finding funny props

0:08:140:08:18

# Clapper loaders, food stylists, stagehands and more

0:08:180:08:23

# The work is hard, it never stops. #

0:08:230:08:27

# So can you tell me more about those names at the end of movies?

0:08:270:08:32

# Who are they? I'd really love to know more. #

0:08:320:08:37

-# Well, a boom operator records the sound.

-What this kind of boom?

0:08:370:08:40

# No, a boom moves a microphone close to the sound a film must get.

0:08:400:08:46

# A dolly grip moves cameras.

0:08:460:08:48

-# What this kind of dolly?

-No!

0:08:480:08:50

# A dolly is a special cart that wheels the cameras around the set/

0:08:500:08:55

# And a Best Boy helps the person in charge of all the electrical stuff.

0:08:550:09:00

-# Can a Best Boy be a girl, though?

-Of course they can, you bet.

0:09:000:09:04

# We have found out what some people do when they're making movies

0:09:040:09:10

# Amazing

0:09:100:09:12

# Cool information to know! #

0:09:120:09:15

# The Let's Go Club. #

0:09:160:09:18

Let's go!

0:09:180:09:19

I'm going to be singing that song all day now

0:09:190:09:22

and I think if anyone's the Best Boy around here, it's me.

0:09:220:09:26

-Hello there.

-Hello.

0:09:260:09:28

-What's your name?

-I'm Rocket.

0:09:280:09:30

Hello there, Rocket. Have you come to show us a Super Skill?

0:09:300:09:34

-That's right.

-Go on, then, show us some moves, Rocket.

0:09:340:09:37

SHE HUMS A TUNE

0:09:370:09:42

Look at those dance moves.

0:09:420:09:44

Good job, Rocket. What do you think of that, guys?

0:09:440:09:47

-Good.

-Good.

0:09:470:09:49

-And this lady here is Julia. Hello, Julia.

-Hi, Let's Goers.

0:09:490:09:53

Have you all got your puppets?

0:09:530:09:56

I've got mine as well. Looking good.

0:09:560:09:59

Julia, you bring Rocket to life, so where do we start?

0:09:590:10:03

It's best to start with a simple puppet so like you've got

0:10:030:10:06

with balls on a string with eyes drawn on.

0:10:060:10:09

Makes it easier while you're practising.

0:10:090:10:11

-Have you given your puppet a name?

-Max.

-Max, great.

0:10:110:10:14

-Cookie.

-Very good.

0:10:140:10:16

-Amber.

-Very nice.

0:10:160:10:17

So next thing you need to think about is your puppet's expressions.

0:10:170:10:21

Look at each other's faces and copy some expressions.

0:10:210:10:25

-You can use other people's faces?

-Absolutely, yeah.

0:10:250:10:28

Give it a go with your puppets and let's see some of your expressions.

0:10:280:10:32

Oh, very excited. Very nice.

0:10:320:10:34

Can we maybe try a bit of sad?

0:10:340:10:38

Once you've got your expressions sorted, what do we do now?

0:10:380:10:41

Next you need to think about who your puppet's talking to.

0:10:410:10:45

So it needs to be looking at the person it's talking to.

0:10:450:10:48

We call that an eye-line

0:10:480:10:50

and make sure it's looking at the person or puppet it's talking to.

0:10:500:10:54

-Hello, Bob.

-Hello, Martin.

0:10:540:10:56

So, Julia, how do we put on a show?

0:10:560:10:58

Very important, the audience has come to see your puppet.

0:10:580:11:02

They haven't come to see you, so put your arm really up high in the air

0:11:020:11:06

and then hide behind something so that you won't be seen.

0:11:060:11:10

Now that we've got the expressions and know we have to hide,

0:11:100:11:13

should we get behind this chest and give it a go?

0:11:130:11:16

That's a great idea! Let's see your groovy moves!

0:11:160:11:20

-ALL:

-Boo!

0:11:200:11:22

-I'm Cookie.

-I'm Amber.

-I'm Max.

0:11:220:11:25

-ALL:

-We're all Let's Go Clubbers.

0:11:250:11:29

Oh, what a great Super Skill.

0:11:300:11:32

-Thanks, Julia. Thank you, Rocket.

-Thanks.

0:11:320:11:35

Now it's time to pop some corn, take your seats and dim the lights

0:11:350:11:39

because Let's Goer Ellie-May is putting on a home cinema premiere.

0:11:390:11:43

-Er, Martin.

-Yeah.

-I wonder if there'll be a red carpet?

0:11:430:11:46

Me too.

0:11:460:11:49

# The Let's Go Club. #

0:11:490:11:51

Let's go!

0:11:510:11:53

Hello, I'm Ellie-May

0:11:530:11:54

and this is my brother Joshua

0:11:540:11:57

and these are my friends Olivia and Georgia.

0:11:570:12:01

We love going to the cinema together

0:12:010:12:04

so we're going to make our very own family cinema here at home.

0:12:040:12:09

If you like to watch films with friends and family,

0:12:090:12:13

here's some things you can do.

0:12:130:12:15

Lights, camera, action. Let's make magic!

0:12:150:12:18

You can't get into the cinema without a ticket.

0:12:180:12:22

Our tickets are done. Now it's time to get our family cinema ready.

0:12:240:12:28

We've even made our own cinema sign.

0:12:300:12:32

We've got a red carpet for our guests.

0:12:340:12:38

We've got healthy snacks too.

0:12:400:12:42

Coming.

0:12:480:12:49

-Welcome to our family cinema.

-Thank you.

0:12:520:12:55

-We even have popcorn to give to our audience.

-Thank you very much.

0:12:570:13:01

You're welcome, Grandad.

0:13:010:13:04

-It's movie time.

-Shh!

0:13:040:13:06

Sorry, Daddy.

0:13:060:13:08

I love our family cinema.

0:13:110:13:13

We love family film time so we did this.

0:13:180:13:21
