I'm Stacey Dooley.

0:00:040:00:05

I love animals and I hate seeing them sick.

0:00:050:00:08

But when they are, thankfully they can come to places like this,

0:00:080:00:12

where amazing vets will go the extra mile to fix them up.

0:00:120:00:15

Meet rookie vet, Rory.

0:00:160:00:18

I do love a friendly rabbit.

0:00:180:00:20

Smells like dog sick! Yuck!

0:00:200:00:23

Every pet's best friend, Cheryl.

0:00:230:00:25

Hello.

0:00:250:00:27

Oww!

0:00:270:00:28

That really hurt!

0:00:280:00:29

The coolest vet in town, Cat.

0:00:300:00:33

Come on, honey! That's fine,

0:00:330:00:35

you just sweep the floor while you come on in.

0:00:350:00:37

And always caring, gentle, James.

0:00:370:00:40

Aren't you gorgeous?

0:00:400:00:42

Oh!

0:00:420:00:43

They're the vets with The Pets Factor.

0:00:470:00:49

Coming up on today's show...

0:00:560:00:58

James operates on Hepzi the rabbit, and has a heart stopping moment.

0:00:590:01:03

She's just decided to stop breathing.

0:01:030:01:05

For Rory, it's lights out to see Poppy's poorly eye.

0:01:060:01:10

That's a puncture wound, and that is what is causing her all her issues.

0:01:100:01:13

-Sadie?

-And Cat the vet has a dirty job on her hands

0:01:140:01:18

cleaning out this spaniel's floppy ears.

0:01:180:01:20

Oh, and it's stinky, isn't it?

0:01:200:01:22

Phew!

0:01:220:01:23

But first, let's head over to James in Bristol.

0:01:230:01:26

-Hi there.

-He always has his hands full fixing up

0:01:280:01:31

the city's poorly pets.

0:01:310:01:32

Oh!

0:01:320:01:34

From loving lurchers...

0:01:340:01:35

Oh, you're a very nice boy!

0:01:350:01:37

..to cuddly cats...

0:01:370:01:38

-Oh, hello!

-..and even tiny tortoises.

0:01:380:01:41

Oh, look at him!

0:01:410:01:44

So many gorgeous pets come through the door,

0:01:460:01:48

I just cannot resist a sneaky cuddle.

0:01:480:01:50

Today, it's fluffball bunny Hepzi that's drawing in the crowds.

0:01:520:01:56

Hi!

0:01:560:01:58

And what a surprise,

0:01:580:01:59

James has found the time to pop in for a quick squeeze.

0:01:590:02:02

Hello! She's so fluffy, isn't she?

0:02:030:02:07

Owner Ellen has brought Hepzi in for her annual pedicure.

0:02:070:02:11

That's where she's having her claws shaped and trimmed.

0:02:110:02:14

Like any self-respecting lop-eared Angora Lionhead cross,

0:02:150:02:20

Hepzi loves a pampering.

0:02:200:02:22

At home in her deluxe summerhouse, she enjoys top to tail,

0:02:220:02:26

5-star treatment.

0:02:260:02:28

Although when it comes to keeping her nails in tiptop condition,

0:02:290:02:33

it calls for a trip to the salon.

0:02:330:02:35

I mean, the vet's.

0:02:350:02:37

She's so fluffy!

0:02:370:02:39

And looking after Hepzi today is her number one fan, vet nurse Claire.

0:02:390:02:43

Vet nurses are a crucial part to our team,

0:02:440:02:46

and Claire has been here for 12 years, and believe me,

0:02:460:02:49

she knows her rabbits from her Rottweilers.

0:02:490:02:51

She probably could teach me a thing or two!

0:02:510:02:53

The first thing I've got to do is find your feet.

0:02:530:02:56

They do look like they've been cut recently,

0:02:560:02:58

cos they've got quite a square edge.

0:02:580:02:59

I trimmed the edges, but I always get too scared to go any further.

0:02:590:03:02

This needs a steady hand.

0:03:020:03:04

One wrong snip could cause Hepzi a lot of pain.

0:03:050:03:08

But Claire is a pro.

0:03:110:03:12

In the wild, bunnies would naturally wear their nails down

0:03:120:03:16

by digging in rough ground.

0:03:160:03:18

But we sort of pamper our bunnies,

0:03:180:03:20

we pamper our bunnies with their own summerhouses

0:03:200:03:23

and their own carpet and...

0:03:230:03:24

She has a sandpit!

0:03:240:03:27

She genuinely has a sandpit.

0:03:270:03:28

Back to looking her beautiful best,

0:03:310:03:33

Hepzi can return to her life of luxury.

0:03:330:03:35

A new day and another horde of pets to see.

0:03:390:03:42

Hang on, those two look familiar.

0:03:450:03:48

That's Ellen and fluffy bunny Hepzi.

0:03:480:03:51

-Hello.

-Hiya.

-How are you?

0:03:510:03:52

-I'm good, thank you.

-Oh, we saw you...

0:03:520:03:54

-Yesterday.

-You're back, yeah.

0:03:540:03:56

Yeah, I found a lump on her chest.

0:03:560:03:58

Oh, dear, OK. Is that just something new, have you seen it before?

0:03:580:04:01

-I've never noticed it before.

-Have you not? Oh, OK.

0:04:010:04:04

So, shall we have a look?

0:04:040:04:05

-Yeah.

-OK, come on through.

0:04:050:04:07

Ellen has done the right thing.

0:04:090:04:10

You should always check a lump or bump as soon as you find it, really.

0:04:100:04:14

Right, where am I going?

0:04:170:04:18

If you lift her up onto her back legs,

0:04:180:04:20

it's literally where your hands will be.

0:04:200:04:22

-Let's have a look.

-Right in the middle.

0:04:220:04:23

Oh, there, OK. It almost feels there could be a ball of hair, doesn't it?

0:04:240:04:28

That it's just matted up. But actually, I don't think it is,

0:04:280:04:31

I agree, I think it is a lump.

0:04:310:04:33

There is actually a little bit of blood coming through there as well,

0:04:330:04:36

a little bit of discharge from it.

0:04:360:04:37

It could be a cyst, or it could be an abscess, or if I'm honest,

0:04:390:04:42

I'm a bit worried it could be something a bit more serious

0:04:420:04:45

so I'm not prepared to take any chances.

0:04:450:04:48

For the fact that she is otherwise so well,

0:04:480:04:50

I would probably suggest we remove it.

0:04:500:04:52

-OK. Yup.

-Which, I know is a little bit scary with bunnies,

0:04:520:04:55

with their anaesthetic risk and things,

0:04:550:04:57

but I do think getting rid of it is probably our best course of action.

0:04:570:05:00

I think so, yeah.

0:05:000:05:03

Join us later as James gets to the root of Hepzi's nasty problem.

0:05:080:05:12

Let's go to Sheffield to see Cat the vet.

0:05:210:05:23

If there is one thing you need as a vet, it's a strong stomach.

0:05:250:05:28

Oh, yes, we see blood, guts, gore, goo.

0:05:280:05:33

I love a bit of goo!

0:05:330:05:35

But there is one bodily fluid we get covered in all the time.

0:05:390:05:43

You're not joking!

0:05:430:05:44

Even pet tortoise, Colin, is getting in on the action today.

0:05:440:05:48

-Has he weed on me?

-Yeah.

0:05:490:05:51

Oh, Colin!

0:05:510:05:52

Colin, that's not very nice!

0:05:540:05:57

I don't mind the gross stuff.

0:05:570:05:58

People think I'm weird.

0:05:580:06:00

Sadie? Come on in, darling.

0:06:000:06:02

Well, today it might be your day, Cat, because Helen's

0:06:020:06:05

springer spaniel, Sadie, has something nasty lurking

0:06:050:06:08

in her lugholes.

0:06:080:06:09

When did you first notice they were a problem?

0:06:100:06:12

Well, it has been an ongoing problem.

0:06:120:06:15

She's had quite a few ear infections.

0:06:150:06:17

Oh, my darling! Yes, they are a bit gooey, aren't they?

0:06:170:06:19

It's a real problem for the dogs with the floppy ears.

0:06:190:06:22

They are so hairy, the air just can't get into them.

0:06:220:06:25

You can see that all the skin is really thickened and really dry,

0:06:250:06:29

look at that. Then we've got all of this goo down there.

0:06:290:06:33

Oh, and it's stinky, isn't it?

0:06:330:06:35

Phew!

0:06:350:06:37

Poor Sadie has got one of the worst ear infections

0:06:400:06:42

I've seen in a long time. She must feel really awful,

0:06:420:06:45

so we are going to get her checked in straightaway

0:06:450:06:47

and get it all cleaned out.

0:06:470:06:49

So, you can come and stay with me for the day, how do you fancy that?

0:06:490:06:52

No answer. You don't look that enthusiastic, my love.

0:06:540:06:57

-Come on, then, Sadie.

-But a deep clean like this...

0:06:590:07:02

Right, my darling.

0:07:020:07:03

Off to sleep, good girl.

0:07:030:07:04

..is not going to be very pleasant for poor Sadie.

0:07:040:07:07

This is why we put them under a general anaesthetic,

0:07:080:07:10

because it can be as painful as actual surgery.

0:07:100:07:13

Stick around, as Cat discovers that it's not just

0:07:170:07:20

Sadie's waxy ears that are a worry.

0:07:200:07:22

Look how red her tummy is, just there.

0:07:220:07:25

That is not normal.

0:07:250:07:26

And Rory deals with a feisty feline...

0:07:280:07:30

Does she always do this a little bit?

0:07:300:07:32

..who doesn't want his help.

0:07:320:07:34

Oh, no, you go back in there.

0:07:340:07:35

We are back with James in Bristol.

0:07:390:07:42

Remember Hepzi, the lop-eared Angora Lionhead cross bunny?

0:07:420:07:47

This lady of leisure is used to a life of luxury.

0:07:470:07:50

But today, she's been rushed in to see vet James,

0:07:510:07:54

to deal with a serious looking lump hidden under her fur.

0:07:540:07:57

He needs to remove it straight away,

0:07:590:08:01

with the help of Hepzi's biggest fan, vet nurse, Claire.

0:08:010:08:04

Oh, Hepzi.

0:08:050:08:07

You're so fluffy, you can't see it.

0:08:070:08:10

We did her nails yesterday, but we did not see this.

0:08:100:08:13

Now James has shaved through Hepzi's mounds of fluff,

0:08:150:08:18

he can see the lump clearly.

0:08:180:08:20

And it's not a pretty sight.

0:08:200:08:22

Ugh! Look at that.

0:08:220:08:25

This is actually quite ulcerous, it's not very nice underneath there.

0:08:250:08:29

So, we thought initially that this could just be a cyst, but actually,

0:08:310:08:34

now I've clipped it up, it does feel a little bit more solid than that.

0:08:340:08:37

So, the best thing to do,

0:08:370:08:39

let's get the lump off and then we'll make a decision from there.

0:08:390:08:43

To remove the lump, James has to operate,

0:08:430:08:46

which means Hepzi needs to be sedated for even longer.

0:08:460:08:49

The problem with small animals like rabbits is that the longer they are

0:08:510:08:54

under anaesthetic, the greater the risk that they won't wake up.

0:08:540:08:57

So, this is pretty high pressure.

0:08:570:09:00

But as Claire tops up Hepzi's anaesthetic,

0:09:000:09:03

she takes a turn for the worse.

0:09:030:09:05

Just since I've given her a second lot of sedation,

0:09:050:09:07

she's just decided to stop breathing.

0:09:070:09:09

We are not panicking, but we just

0:09:110:09:14

need to really keep a close eye on her.

0:09:140:09:17

This does happen with rabbits.

0:09:200:09:21

They are really difficult to operate on.

0:09:210:09:24

So, it's really important that nobody panics

0:09:240:09:26

so we can get this sorted out as quickly as possible.

0:09:260:09:28

But thankfully, there's soon signs of life.

0:09:310:09:34

I think that was a little breath.

0:09:340:09:35

-Yeah, that was a little breath.

-Has she started?

0:09:350:09:38

-Yeah.

-Good.

0:09:380:09:39

Thank goodness.

0:09:420:09:44

Bunnies always like to test the team.

0:09:440:09:47

She's a bit more stable now.

0:09:470:09:48

So, I'm going to continue.

0:09:490:09:51

I think speed is of the essence here, isn't it?

0:09:510:09:53

Let's just try and crack on and get this done as quick as possible.

0:09:530:09:56

With no time to waste, James gets to work.

0:09:580:10:01

Looking at that, if that was in a dog or cat

0:10:020:10:04

you might think it's quite a small lump but actually,

0:10:040:10:07

when you think about the size of a rabbit, proportionately,

0:10:070:10:09

that's actually quite big.

0:10:090:10:11

It's the equivalent of maybe finding a tennis-ball sized lump

0:10:110:10:15

on our bodies, maybe,

0:10:150:10:16

so it's definitely a good idea to get rid of it.

0:10:160:10:20

If you're squeamish, look away now.

0:10:200:10:22

So, I'm just breaking down these tissues that are connecting the lump

0:10:240:10:29

to the underlying fat in the muscle.

0:10:290:10:31

Right, we can breathe, breathe a sigh of relief now.

0:10:330:10:38

It's a really good idea to regularly check your pets over for lumps

0:10:380:10:41

or bumps because the sooner they are picked up, the better.

0:10:410:10:44

The fact that Ellen has found this lump so early

0:10:450:10:48

I suppose you could say, she has saved Hepzi's life.

0:10:480:10:52

And thanks to James and the team,

0:10:550:10:57

it looks like this fluff ball will be back with her owner in no time.

0:10:570:11:01

At the end of the day, we all just want the same thing, don't we?

0:11:040:11:06

We all just want Hepzi to come through,

0:11:060:11:08

a nice smooth operation in there,

0:11:080:11:09

and get her home later on today, that's all anyone wants.

0:11:090:11:13

Actually, I want Hepzi to come home with me.

0:11:130:11:15

Yeah!

0:11:150:11:16

I want Hepzi to come home with me today.

0:11:160:11:18

Bad luck, Clare, Hepzi is going back to her real home.

0:11:220:11:25

But there's still time for this very important bunny to get spoiled

0:11:260:11:30

with a five-star suite in the office.

0:11:300:11:32

Hello, pickle.

0:11:350:11:37

Hello. We do get quite attached to our patients because

0:11:370:11:41

she is a cool rabbit. She's got a personality.

0:11:410:11:44

Time to see Rory the vet in London.

0:11:550:11:58

I love cats.

0:12:010:12:03

You're so lovely.

0:12:030:12:04

You are! Especially the well-behaved ones.

0:12:040:12:07

You did so well.

0:12:070:12:08

But I cannot resist the challenge of the naughty ones, too.

0:12:080:12:11

Oh, you fierce, fierce lion.

0:12:120:12:14

Not playing ball today, mate?

0:12:160:12:17

Oh, there we go, look at that, he's flicked it all everywhere.

0:12:170:12:20

Because he scratched my hand.

0:12:200:12:22

And Rory's latest naughty feline patient has been brought in

0:12:220:12:26

by sisters, Ruby and Pearl.

0:12:260:12:28

She does scratch a lot.

0:12:280:12:30

And she's very mischievous.

0:12:300:12:34

Poppy is quite the explorer.

0:12:340:12:36

And will fight with just about anything she comes across.

0:12:370:12:40

But now and again, that gets her into real trouble.

0:12:420:12:46

And this time, she's come home with a mysteriously sore eye.

0:12:490:12:53

Cue Poppy's next adventure to the vet's.

0:12:530:12:56

Poppy, please.

0:12:570:13:00

So, how can I help, guys?

0:13:000:13:02

Her eye's infected.

0:13:020:13:04

Oh, dear. Do you know if anything caused it?

0:13:040:13:06

Can you think of anything off the top of your head?

0:13:060:13:09

No, we think it came from outside.

0:13:090:13:12

Poppy might have a sore eye...

0:13:120:13:13

But it's not stopping her putting up a fight with Rory.

0:13:160:13:19

Does she always do this a little bit?

0:13:190:13:21

-Yeah.

-She's always like this, is she?

0:13:210:13:23

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:13:230:13:26

That's it, that's it, that's it.

0:13:260:13:27

I know, you go back in there, then.

0:13:270:13:29

You have a little chill. You have a little chill out.

0:13:290:13:32

Rule number one of being a vet, always come home

0:13:320:13:36

with all your fingers.

0:13:360:13:38

Now Poppy looks to be calming down,

0:13:380:13:40

Rory needs to investigate what is making her eye so sore.

0:13:400:13:44

We are going to pop some dye in that eye.

0:13:440:13:48

Poppy's eye might look fine...

0:13:500:13:52

We'll give it a go, oh, there we go, look at that, perfect.

0:13:520:13:55

That was good, wasn't it? But this dye will show up any problems.

0:13:550:13:59

Can you see the centre of her eye?

0:13:590:14:01

-Yeah.

-Can you see how it's green?

0:14:010:14:02

-Yeah.

-Can you see that little round thing?

0:14:020:14:04

-Yeah.

-That's a puncture wound, that's what's called

0:14:040:14:06

a corneal ulcer.

0:14:060:14:07

Something really sharp has pierced a hole in the middle of Poppy's eye.

0:14:080:14:12

I think she's had a fight with another cat and probably got a claw

0:14:120:14:16

right in her eye. Ouch.

0:14:160:14:18

I'm just going to turn the lights off and watch the eye.

0:14:180:14:21

-See that?

-Yeah.

-Now you can see it really clearly,

0:14:210:14:25

and that is what's causing her all that issue.

0:14:250:14:29

OK. Perfect.

0:14:290:14:31

Now, it does look quite deep.

0:14:310:14:33

If we don't treat that and if we don't get on top of it

0:14:330:14:36

nice and quickly, it can, what's called, "melt."

0:14:360:14:39

OK.

0:14:390:14:40

And I do really mean melt!

0:14:400:14:42

The front of her eye could just melt away and even burst.

0:14:420:14:45

But now Rory's found the problem,

0:14:470:14:49

these antibiotic drops should help it heal.

0:14:490:14:53

Now, hopefully, she's not going to be too annoyed.

0:14:530:14:55

So, if you just go behind, she can't see it coming

0:14:560:14:59

and then you can just... I know, sweetie...

0:14:590:15:01

..do that.

0:15:010:15:03

I hope Pearl, Ruby and mum Elodie were paying attention,

0:15:050:15:08

as they'll need to do this every day for a week.

0:15:080:15:11

-So, you know what you are doing with the drops?

-Yes.

-Great.

0:15:110:15:14

Keep a close eye and keep her in for me and I'll see you in a week and

0:15:140:15:16

-we'll have another look. See you later, guys.

-See you.

0:15:160:15:19

There you go.

0:15:270:15:28

Time to get back to Sheffield with Cat

0:15:280:15:31

and the spaniel with the bunged up ears.

0:15:310:15:33

Those gruesome waxy lugholes need flushing out.

0:15:340:15:38

It's a mucky job that's even going to put gore-loving Cat to the test.

0:15:380:15:42

It's just utterly clogged.

0:15:420:15:45

Completely full of wax.

0:15:450:15:47

But before Cat can get anywhere near the wax buried inside,

0:15:480:15:51

she needs to tackle the layers on the outside.

0:15:510:15:55

Just getting out some of the worst bits of the wax.

0:15:550:15:57

Although I would be very careful about doing that at home,

0:15:570:16:00

it's a job I would probably leave to the professionals.

0:16:000:16:02

If you're squeamish, look away now!

0:16:030:16:05

Yes, I'm quite happy to leave that horrible job to pros like you, Cat.

0:16:060:16:11

Look at that. Imagine having all of that down your ears.

0:16:110:16:15

Golly, it really smells, doesn't it?

0:16:180:16:20

Poor old Sadie, and your nose is twice as sensitive as mine

0:16:210:16:25

and a lot closer to your ears.

0:16:250:16:26

Time for Cat to venture deep inside.

0:16:270:16:30

Right, let's start flushing.

0:16:300:16:31

She needs to use this massive syringe to inject fluid

0:16:330:16:36

right down into the ear canal.

0:16:360:16:39

This will loosen all that goo so she can clean it away.

0:16:390:16:42

It's a long time since I've seen ears as bad as Sadie's.

0:16:430:16:47

It just isn't right.

0:16:470:16:48

Sadie has actually got some really sore, thickened skin.

0:16:480:16:53

Look how red her tummy is just there.

0:16:530:16:55

That is not normal.

0:16:550:16:57

That just starts to tell is that it's not just

0:16:570:17:00

a straightforward ear infection.

0:17:000:17:03

Cat suspects Sadie has a skin allergy

0:17:040:17:06

that is at the root of her problem.

0:17:060:17:08

What we're doing is taking a swab of the ear,

0:17:080:17:12

and that goes in this little tube.

0:17:120:17:14

And the lab will be able to tell me exactly what bacteria is growing

0:17:140:17:18

in Sadie's ears, so I can pick exactly the right medicine

0:17:180:17:21

to make them better.

0:17:210:17:22

And with her other ear flushed out,

0:17:240:17:26

it's finally light at the end of the tunnel.

0:17:260:17:29

It's an awful lot cleaner now.

0:17:290:17:31

Once those lab results are back,

0:17:310:17:33

she'll get the treatment for her skin condition

0:17:330:17:35

that she desperately needs.

0:17:350:17:37

There she is.

0:17:390:17:41

All you want to do is be off home.

0:17:410:17:42

Yes.

0:17:420:17:44

Well, I'm going to cook her a chicken and rice for her tea.

0:17:440:17:48

And then she'll probably just have lots of fuss.

0:17:480:17:50

You're so cute.

0:17:570:18:00

Let's go back to James in Bristol now.

0:18:000:18:04

Remember Ellen's pride and joy rabbit Hepzi,

0:18:040:18:06

who had a nasty tumour removed?

0:18:060:18:08

Well, just look at this lop-eared lovely now.

0:18:100:18:13

Hepzi's back to her full self. Within about two days after surgery,

0:18:150:18:18

she lived inside for a couple of days.

0:18:180:18:20

And within two days, she was hopping around,

0:18:200:18:22

demolishing her treats and toys and just being her normal self.

0:18:220:18:25

Hopping around everywhere.

0:18:250:18:27

This certainly is one pampered pet.

0:18:270:18:29

Check out her crib.

0:18:290:18:31

This old summerhouse is for Hepzi to hang out in,

0:18:340:18:37

and these days, Ellen is keeping a much closer eye on her.

0:18:370:18:41

I'm much more observant when I'm picking her up

0:18:410:18:43

in that area to make sure

0:18:430:18:44

that she hasn't got any more lumps so I'm really,

0:18:440:18:46

really glad he's sorted it and it's all off.

0:18:460:18:48

Thanks to James and Clare,

0:18:480:18:49

Hepzi can now continue her life of luxury in Ellen's back garden.

0:18:490:18:53

Hey? Happy days, Hepzi, happy days.

0:18:570:19:00

And get that summerhouse, what a lucky bunny she is.

0:19:000:19:04

Now, what about poor old Sadie with those gunky ears?

0:19:040:19:07

Well, this springer spaniel has definitely got her spring back.

0:19:090:19:13

I just love to see her so excited

0:19:130:19:15

and just full of life and bouncing about.

0:19:150:19:18

It's nice to see that back again.

0:19:190:19:20

And now that nasty skin allergy is also being investigated,

0:19:220:19:26

she's got plenty to shout about.

0:19:260:19:29

Next time on The Pets Factor,

0:19:310:19:34

Cheryl performs a tricky operation on a much-loved Jack Russell.

0:19:340:19:37

I'm really nervous about this.

0:19:370:19:39

I would hate for anything to go wrong.

0:19:390:19:42

And Rory's patient gets into a bit of a flap.

0:19:420:19:46

I know, I know.
