I'm Stacey Dooley, and I love animals,

0:00:020:00:05

which means I cannot resist when it comes to little pups like this.

0:00:050:00:09

But sometimes, just like us, our four-legged friends get sick.

0:00:090:00:13

Fortunately, when they do, they can come to places like this,

0:00:130:00:17

where amazing vets work their animal magic to make them better.

0:00:170:00:21

Meet passionate pet-lover Cheryl.

0:00:210:00:24

And that is how she broke it in the first place.

0:00:240:00:27

The biggest softie of them all, gentle James.

0:00:270:00:31

Hello, Stu!

0:00:310:00:32

Come on, come for a little swim!

0:00:320:00:35

The vet who talks to the animals, Cat.

0:00:350:00:38

You are a snorty pig!

0:00:380:00:40

Oh, no, don't eat the tape measure!

0:00:400:00:42

And the one with all the best moves, Rory.

0:00:420:00:45

HE SINGS

0:00:450:00:46

Oh, look at that. Oh, wow! That was a snog.

0:00:460:00:49

They're the vets with The Pets Factor.

0:00:520:00:55

Coming up on today's show...

0:01:010:01:04

Vet Cat assists with some serious dental work on adorable Daisy.

0:01:040:01:08

So, it's just you and me, Daisy, all right?

0:01:080:01:11

OK!

0:01:110:01:12

James gets up to speed with a canine champion.

0:01:120:01:15

Good girl. Weave, weave, weave, weave, weave, weave, weave!

0:01:150:01:18

Good girl!

0:01:180:01:19

And Cheryl operates on an abandoned kitten in need of a home.

0:01:190:01:23

Hello, Trinity! Isn't she cute?

0:01:230:01:26

Aww! Trinity!

0:01:260:01:27

First, let's head to Sheffield to see Cat the vet.

0:01:290:01:32

If there's one thing the pets here know,

0:01:340:01:36

it's that coming to the vets can be a lot of fun.

0:01:360:01:39

Well done, Bonnie.

0:01:390:01:40

Our puppy parties are the highlight of our week.

0:01:420:01:45

There you go.

0:01:450:01:47

But they're also a great way

0:01:470:01:49

to show our patients that coming to the vets isn't so scary after all.

0:01:490:01:53

And one dog who's certainly not afraid of coming to the vets

0:01:540:01:57

is Daisy the Cavalier King Charles spaniel.

0:01:570:02:00

Hello! Hello!

0:02:000:02:02

She's been coming here for ten years,

0:02:020:02:04

and today she's back with best pal Freddie and owner Lynne.

0:02:040:02:08

When the practice first opened,

0:02:080:02:09

Daisy came to their first puppy party.

0:02:090:02:12

But I think she's remembered it cos she's always enjoyed coming.

0:02:120:02:16

This pair of spaniels just love hanging out together.

0:02:160:02:19

And fun-loving Daisy is a real sweetie.

0:02:200:02:23

But the minute she opens her mouth,

0:02:240:02:26

Daisy's not as sweet smelling as her name suggests.

0:02:260:02:29

This hound has a serious case of bad breath-eitis.

0:02:300:02:35

Hi there, Daisy.

0:02:350:02:36

Vet James is her dentist today, and it looks like a big job.

0:02:360:02:40

So Daisy's having some teeth extracted.

0:02:400:02:43

You don't know how many, do you, until...?

0:02:430:02:46

I don't know how many, but we can quite safely say that these ones

0:02:460:02:50

-up here are going to be extracted cos they're quite loose.

-Right.

0:02:500:02:53

So it's going to be four at least,

0:02:530:02:55

-and there might be others that we don't anticipate.

-OK.

0:02:550:02:58

Like many small dogs, spaniels like Daisy are prone to dental problems.

0:02:590:03:03

I'm just going to have a little listen to her heart

0:03:040:03:06

and just check the rate and the rhythm.

0:03:060:03:08

But to add to her woes, Daisy also has a serious heart defect

0:03:080:03:12

which makes this routine procedure a really big deal.

0:03:120:03:16

Her heart condition does increase her risk under the anaesthetic.

0:03:160:03:21

There is, unfortunately, a real chance that she could

0:03:210:03:23

potentially die under the anaesthetic.

0:03:230:03:25

It is a low risk if we do things very carefully,

0:03:250:03:29

and we'll do everything we can to make it as safe as possible for her.

0:03:290:03:32

-Right.

-OK?

-OK.

0:03:320:03:34

It's really tough for Daisy's owner Lynne,

0:03:350:03:37

but she's doing the right thing.

0:03:370:03:39

Daisy's in pain now, and the longer we leave it,

0:03:390:03:42

the more dangerous the surgery is going to be.

0:03:420:03:44

But Cat and James will take special care of her today

0:03:470:03:50

and monitor her anaesthetic extra closely.

0:03:500:03:53

-Well done, Daisy.

-Good girl.

-You brave dog!

0:03:530:03:57

You little treasure.

0:03:570:03:59

Look at that - not a drop was spilt.

0:03:590:04:01

She is definitely one of the best behaved patients that I have.

0:04:010:04:04

We've taken care of her for many, many years now.

0:04:040:04:07

Look how well you're doing, my love.

0:04:070:04:09

And Cat has an inventive plan to keep her patient as safe as possible

0:04:100:04:13

through surgery.

0:04:130:04:15

We put the little space boots on their feet

0:04:150:04:17

to help to keep them warm.

0:04:170:04:19

When a patient is under an anaesthetic, it's very easy for

0:04:190:04:22

their body temperature to drop and they can get too cold,

0:04:220:04:24

which means that sometimes the anaesthetic is more difficult

0:04:240:04:27

or they spend longer coming around.

0:04:270:04:29

So we like to keep them really toasty

0:04:290:04:30

cos it really helps their recovery.

0:04:300:04:32

With cat making sure Daisy's heart rate is stable,

0:04:340:04:36

James needs to work fast so they can bring her back round

0:04:360:04:40

as quickly as possible.

0:04:400:04:41

HE CHUCKLES

0:04:460:04:47

MEOW!

0:04:480:04:49

Come on, big man!

0:04:490:04:50

Next, we're in Bristol with James.

0:04:520:04:54

That's good, he can wake up.

0:04:560:04:57

He's the vet everyone wants on their team.

0:04:570:04:59

-You look like Noddy.

-LAUGHTER

0:04:590:05:02

And he treats all his patients like superstars.

0:05:020:05:05

Here we go, here we go.

0:05:050:05:06

-Oh, hello!

-LAUGHS:

-Aww!

0:05:060:05:09

But today, he's leaving the practice

0:05:090:05:11

to go and meet some rather remarkable dogs.

0:05:110:05:14

There's nothing I like more than a super pet,

0:05:140:05:16

the ones that have that something extra special.

0:05:160:05:19

And these guys are pretty special indeed.

0:05:190:05:22

Oh, look! Who is this?

0:05:260:05:28

-BARKING DROWNS OUT SPEECH

-Aww!

0:05:280:05:30

These amazing doggie athletes train every single day

0:05:330:05:37

to compete on assault courses like this,

0:05:370:05:39

which test their agility and speed.

0:05:390:05:41

They are a totally amazing.

0:05:470:05:49

Blink and you miss them.

0:05:490:05:50

They are like Olympic gymnasts on four legs.

0:05:500:05:53

Hello, hello.

0:05:550:05:56

Trainer Lucy is hoping that little Flooey will be a future champion.

0:05:560:06:00

So she's a little bit wriggly and a little bit excitable.

0:06:000:06:03

-She's very cute.

-But she's very cute. She's ten weeks old.

0:06:030:06:05

-Ten weeks?

-Ten weeks old.

-Oh, look!

0:06:050:06:07

And she's - hopefully - our new little agility champion,

0:06:070:06:10

a little star in the making.

0:06:100:06:12

But it's agility queen Pixie who needs help hanging onto her crown.

0:06:120:06:16

Pixie is no ordinary dog.

0:06:190:06:21

She's a true champion...

0:06:210:06:22

..with a cupboard full of trophies.

0:06:230:06:25

But, to stay at the top of the pile,

0:06:280:06:30

this speed machine needs to stay injury free.

0:06:300:06:32

So she's off to the vets for a watery work-out.

0:06:350:06:38

Or, to be more exact,

0:06:400:06:41

an underwater treadmill session with hydrotherapist George.

0:06:410:06:45

How's she been getting on lately at home?

0:06:450:06:48

Pixie has been absolutely fantastic.

0:06:480:06:49

We've got a few events coming up so just working on her fitness, really,

0:06:490:06:52

so just getting her ready for her competitions.

0:06:520:06:55

Pixie has got a hectic schedule coming up.

0:06:550:06:57

It's a huge moment in her career.

0:06:570:06:59

-Good girly. Up you go. Yeah, well done, missus!

-Good girl.

0:06:590:07:02

She has got to be the fittest she's ever been.

0:07:020:07:05

That's a smiley face. Good girl.

0:07:080:07:11

They have to be little mini athletes, basically,

0:07:130:07:15

so it's really, really important I keep her fit.

0:07:150:07:19

And going over sort of lots of the jumps and all the twists

0:07:190:07:21

and turns, if she hasn't got a really good strong core, it just

0:07:210:07:24

makes it harder for her and it just puts her at risk of injuries.

0:07:240:07:27

From a vet's point of view, this is the best and, probably,

0:07:290:07:32

the safest workout that Pixie can do.

0:07:320:07:34

Plenty of exercise, she's not going to hurt herself,

0:07:340:07:37

and she's absolutely loving it.

0:07:370:07:39

She looks really, really good, really healthy.

0:07:410:07:44

Pixie is obviously a true champion.

0:07:440:07:45

She is not fazed by this work-out,

0:07:450:07:47

and she's taking it all in her stride.

0:07:470:07:49

Her heart rate was 80 before we started

0:07:520:07:54

and she's just done some exercise in there,

0:07:540:07:57

about three minutes walking, and it will still the same,

0:07:570:07:59

so she's really, really fit.

0:07:590:08:01

So she's done very good.

0:08:010:08:02

Session over.

0:08:030:08:05

Oh, well done!

0:08:050:08:06

Pixie's ready to shake off the opposition and take on the world.

0:08:060:08:10

Later, James' nerves are jangling when he takes charge of the champ.

0:08:120:08:17

My heart's really going for it. I really feel...

0:08:170:08:19

I'm feeling the pressure that I've got to achieve.

0:08:190:08:22

And the pressure's on for vet Cat and James

0:08:220:08:24

to get Daisy through some serious dental work.

0:08:240:08:27

It's really important that we get the balance right between

0:08:270:08:30

her being asleep and comfortable under the anaesthetic,

0:08:300:08:33

but also her heart coping OK.

0:08:330:08:35

Oh, yeah!

0:08:380:08:40

Next, we're off to Essex to see who Cheryl's helping today.

0:08:400:08:43

Oh, you're safe now!

0:08:440:08:46

Nearly half of all the patients she sees are cats.

0:08:480:08:50

You are beautiful.

0:08:500:08:52

I love them all. I just love cats so much.

0:08:520:08:55

Well, today is Cheryl's lucky day,

0:08:570:08:58

as she has a brand-new feline patient to see.

0:08:580:09:01

Hello, Trinity! Isn't she cute?

0:09:010:09:04

Aww! Trinity!

0:09:040:09:06

-Can you believe she was just dumped?

-No.

0:09:060:09:09

It was the run-up to Christmas and all through the house,

0:09:100:09:13

no creatures were stirring, not even a...

0:09:130:09:16

-Meow!

-A kitten?!

-Meow!

0:09:160:09:19

AS MOUSE: "Eh, hello, what about me?!"

0:09:190:09:22

Unbelievably, this cute kitty was just left on someone's doorstep.

0:09:230:09:28

Luckily, she was rescued by the RSPCA,

0:09:280:09:31

and now it's time for her to see vet Cheryl

0:09:310:09:33

to get ready for her forever home.

0:09:330:09:36

Aww, she's so cute.

0:09:380:09:40

Do you think somebody bought her and then didn't want her?

0:09:400:09:43

Or did...? Was she a stray?

0:09:430:09:45

Good girl, Trinity. Oh, don't worry!

0:09:450:09:47

Scary, scary clippers!

0:09:470:09:49

She's lively.

0:09:490:09:51

Today, this wriggly little kitten is getting neutered,

0:09:520:09:55

which means Cheryl will remove her reproductive organs

0:09:550:09:58

the uterus and ovaries.

0:09:580:10:00

Trinity is such an adorable little kitten...

0:10:000:10:02

-Good girl!

-Good girl!

0:10:020:10:04

..and really full of life.

0:10:040:10:06

So brave.

0:10:060:10:07

But it's really important that we do an op to stop her having babies.

0:10:090:10:12

So one cat, if it hasn't been neutered,

0:10:120:10:15

can produce up to 52 kittens in one year,

0:10:150:10:18

because if one cat has kittens, then those kittens can have kittens,

0:10:180:10:22

and then those kittens can have kittens.

0:10:220:10:24

And we see so many unwanted stray kittens, just like Trinity.

0:10:240:10:29

Now Trinity is fast asleep and her belly has been shaved

0:10:300:10:34

and vacuumed...

0:10:340:10:35

..she's ready for theatre.

0:10:360:10:38

Aww, I really want to get Trinity's operation over and done with

0:10:380:10:41

as quickly as possible so that I can see her bouncing around again.

0:10:410:10:45

You and me both, Cheryl.

0:10:450:10:47

The faster Trinity gets sorted,

0:10:470:10:48

the quicker she'll find a new loving home.

0:10:480:10:51

Meow!

0:10:530:10:55

Hey, I'm talking to you.

0:10:580:11:00

Time to catch up with vet Cat and Daisy in Sheffield.

0:11:000:11:03

This lovable Cavalier King Charles spaniel

0:11:050:11:07

is having some rotten teeth removed.

0:11:070:11:09

-Very good girl!

-That's great!

0:11:090:11:11

But because of her heart condition,

0:11:110:11:13

vet Cat is on hand to keep her under close observation.

0:11:130:11:16

So it's just you and me, Daisy, all right?

0:11:160:11:18

But this is not going to be a pretty sight.

0:11:180:11:21

Squawk! If you're squeamish, look away now.

0:11:210:11:24

They are quite loose, so there's not really a lot of work to be done.

0:11:290:11:33

These teeth are trying to work their way out anyway.

0:11:330:11:36

It makes our job easier to extract the teeth,

0:11:370:11:40

but it does mean that there's been a problem for a while.

0:11:400:11:43

No wonder Daisy's breath has been smelly - her teeth

0:11:430:11:46

are so bad they're practically falling out by themselves.

0:11:460:11:49

With the rotten ones removed, James cleans the others to try

0:11:500:11:53

and prevent any more extractions like this.

0:11:530:11:56

OK, missus, over we go.

0:11:570:11:59

And as he gets to work on the other side,

0:12:010:12:03

Cat keeps a careful eye on Daisy's anaesthetic.

0:12:030:12:06

It's really important that we get the balance right between

0:12:060:12:10

her being asleep and comfortable under the anaesthetic,

0:12:100:12:13

but also her heart coping OK.

0:12:130:12:15

So, that's why she's being really closely monitored

0:12:150:12:18

to make sure we get that right.

0:12:180:12:20

We don't want her anaesthetic to be a long one,

0:12:210:12:24

so the quicker we are, the better, really.

0:12:240:12:26

Luckily for Daisy,

0:12:270:12:28

it's only taken 15 minutes to remove her four bottom teeth.

0:12:280:12:32

Right, then, Daisy, we'll give it a quick blast

0:12:320:12:35

and clean off all the polish.

0:12:350:12:37

Well done, James. Super speedy!

0:12:370:12:39

I am so pleased Daisy pulled through.

0:12:410:12:43

Top teamwork, guys. Time to go home, Daisy.

0:12:470:12:50

And someone's been lost without you.

0:12:500:12:52

-Freddie's been really subdued.

-Yeah.

-Not been bouncy at all.

0:12:520:12:57

We're not used to him being quiet.

0:12:570:12:59

Here she is!

0:13:020:13:04

Daisy's back! Look!

0:13:080:13:11

Oh, I love a good doggie reunion.

0:13:160:13:18

Did you miss her today?

0:13:180:13:22

There you go, Dais - you can go home now.

0:13:220:13:23

Excuse me, can you come down, please?

0:13:330:13:35

Let's get back to Bristol with James and Pixie.

0:13:350:13:38

Her regular hydrotherapy treatments have helped keep her injury free

0:13:400:13:44

and looking competition ready.

0:13:440:13:46

-How are we doing?

-Really good, thank you.

0:13:460:13:48

-Oh, I just could not resist coming out to see you.

-Thank you.

0:13:480:13:51

Now, should we have a little look, see her in action?

0:13:510:13:53

-Yes, come on.

-OK. Let's go.

-Let's go. Let's go.

0:13:530:13:56

Are you ready?

0:13:560:13:58

OK, go, go! Tunnel, tunnel!

0:13:580:14:01

Good girl!

0:14:060:14:08

Weave, weave, weave, go, go, go! Go on! Yeah, beautiful!

0:14:080:14:10

Good girlie.

0:14:100:14:12

Good girlie.

0:14:140:14:15

She's such a talent. Good girl, Pixie.

0:14:150:14:18

-She really enjoys it.

-Do you think she would let me have a go?

0:14:180:14:21

-Erm, I think you could...

-Would you let me have a go?

0:14:210:14:23

-I would let you have a go.

-Are you sure?

-Definitely.

0:14:230:14:25

Me and my big mouth!

0:14:250:14:26

Pixie, I am counting on you.

0:14:260:14:28

But first, I'm going to need some tips from the top.

0:14:280:14:30

Basically, when you're doing agility,

0:14:300:14:32

-the dogs follow your shoulders.

-OK.

0:14:320:14:34

-So if you want to turn...

-Yeah.

-..you turn your shoulders.

0:14:340:14:36

-So I turn my shoulders...

-Yeah.

-to make her know which way to go?

0:14:360:14:40

Yeah, absolutely. So she'll move with me when I start moving around.

0:14:400:14:43

-So, can you see how she follows?

-Yeah.

0:14:430:14:45

So she likes to follow the direction that I'm going in.

0:14:450:14:47

-She's kind of a pre-trained dog, if you like...

-OK.

0:14:470:14:50

..so she will help you out, definitely.

0:14:500:14:52

I think I know who's going to be in charge here,

0:14:520:14:54

and they've got four legs, not two!

0:14:540:14:56

My heart's really going for it. I really feel...

0:14:560:14:59

I'm feeling the pressure that I've got to achieve.

0:14:590:15:01

You might be struggling, James, but this pro ready to go.

0:15:010:15:05

OK, come on. Good girl, good girl, good girl! Over here!

0:15:060:15:09

Weave, weave, weave, weave, weave, weave, weave! Good girl!

0:15:090:15:12

Up you come. In the tunnel, in the tunnel.

0:15:120:15:15

Good girl!

0:15:150:15:17

HE CHUCKLES

0:15:170:15:18

Yay!

0:15:190:15:21

Who's a clever girl?!

0:15:210:15:23

You do have to be quite fit for it, don't you?

0:15:230:15:25

-You have to be a little bit fit for it.

-Yeah.

0:15:250:15:27

I mean, if I can do it, it just goes to show

0:15:270:15:28

-anybody, really, can do agility with a dog.

-Absolutely.

0:15:280:15:31

-What a great hobby.

-Yeah, get your dog out there and have the go.

0:15:310:15:33

It's just really good fun.

0:15:330:15:35

DOG HOWLS

0:15:400:15:43

Back to Essex now to see how Cheryl's getting on with Trinity.

0:15:430:15:47

-Good girl!

-Good girl!

0:15:470:15:48

Little kitten Trinity was abandoned on a doorstep just before Christmas.

0:15:500:15:55

She's dreaming of finding a permanent loving home.

0:15:550:15:57

But first, she needs an operation called neutering

0:15:590:16:01

to stop her having unwanted kittens.

0:16:010:16:04

Trinity is a really feisty little kitten, and this whole experience

0:16:040:16:07

at the vet might be a little bit traumatic for her,

0:16:070:16:10

but I think she'll forgive us pretty quickly.

0:16:100:16:13

MACHINERY BEEPS

0:16:150:16:16

Generally, there's no problems after they have their neutering operation.

0:16:160:16:21

-They just go about their general life, don't they?

-Yep.

0:16:210:16:25

Cats are amazing for that, aren't they?

0:16:270:16:29

In, like, two hours she'll probably be jumping...

0:16:290:16:31

She'll be, like, tearing around, desperate to eat something,

0:16:310:16:34

climbing up the front of her kennel.

0:16:340:16:35

It doesn't take long for Cheryl to finish the operation

0:16:370:16:40

and stitch Trinity back up.

0:16:400:16:42

-Wonderful.

-Yeah.

-No complications.

0:16:420:16:45

She should recover really quickly, shouldn't she?

0:16:450:16:48

-A very short anaesthetic.

-Aww...

0:16:480:16:50

She'll be up and about in a minute.

0:16:500:16:53

It's now down to head nurse Jade

0:16:530:16:55

to make sure she comes round from the anaesthetic.

0:16:550:16:57

Hi! Trinity!

0:16:570:17:00

Hey, princess!

0:17:000:17:03

But she'll be a bit sleepy, so she's kind of falling back to sleep again

0:17:030:17:07

now, where she's all nice and snug and warm under her blanket.

0:17:070:17:10

Hi!

0:17:130:17:15

A few hours later and Trinity's ready to be picked up by Ruth

0:17:150:17:19

from the RSPCA who will help find a family to adopt her.

0:17:190:17:23

-Here she is!

-Hello.

0:17:230:17:24

She's recovered super well from her anaesthetic.

0:17:240:17:27

And think, hopefully, we'll be able to get her home as soon as well.

0:17:270:17:30

Someone will re-home you soon.

0:17:330:17:35

-See you later.

-Bye-bye.

-Bye, Trinity!

0:17:350:17:38

And just six weeks after her op...

0:17:460:17:48

..Trinity has finally found her forever home.

0:17:500:17:52

And she's definitely met her match.

0:17:550:17:57

Seven-year-old Camilina has just as much energy.

0:17:590:18:02

SHE GIGGLES

0:18:040:18:06

And this kitten has now been given a very special new name.

0:18:090:18:13

Fredly!

0:18:130:18:14

She combined "Freddie" and "friendly" and came up with Fredly!

0:18:160:18:20

Fredly is Camilina's first-ever pet,

0:18:240:18:27

and they're already the best of friends.

0:18:270:18:29

She's always running around everywhere and, like,

0:18:310:18:35

playing chase cos I have this string and she will chase it about.

0:18:350:18:40

I think they really, really adore each other.

0:18:430:18:46

Fredly's always coming up to Camilina

0:18:460:18:48

when she comes back from school,

0:18:480:18:50

and Camilina just really loves playing with her.

0:18:500:18:53

Here's to a happy life with your new best friend, Fredly.

0:18:540:18:57

I'm so glad to see that gorgeous kitten has found

0:19:010:19:04

her purr-fect new home.

0:19:040:19:07

Hello, you!

0:19:070:19:08

And if you're wondering how Daisy the King Charles is doing

0:19:090:19:12

after all that dental work...

0:19:120:19:14

..Lynne's put her grandkids Charlotte and Finley

0:19:140:19:16

in charge of Daisy's daily dental routine.

0:19:160:19:19

Can you have a go at that fang tooth at the front?

0:19:190:19:21

-Look at that.

-There we go.

0:19:210:19:23

It looks like she's enjoying it.

0:19:230:19:25

Perhaps that's down to the liver-flavoured toothpaste!

0:19:250:19:28

-Do you think you'll be able to manage this at home?

-Yeah.

0:19:280:19:31

Yeah, I reckon you will.

0:19:310:19:32

Next time on The Pets Factor...

0:19:330:19:36

James is concerned about a much-loved labrador's swollen paw...

0:19:360:19:39

Is it infection,

0:19:390:19:40

or is there something a bit more sinister at play?

0:19:400:19:44

..and it's celebration time for Cheryl.

0:19:440:19:46

Hello!

0:19:460:19:48

But the party food is a right dog's dinner.

0:19:480:19:50

THEY LAUGH
