because today's treasure is democracy.

It's when everyone takes turns to say what they think

and have their voice heard.

Democracy is where everyone gets to say who's in charge.

It's important for everyone to vote so everyone has a say.

Democracy is when everyone helps to make a decision.

In my class we had a vote, and the film that had

the most votes was the film that we all watched.

An election is when grown-ups vote to find out who is in charge.

Democracy is important

cos it makes you feel like you're all working together.

Come on, Kari, if we're going to play on our scooters,

you need a scooter.

But I'm not trying to scoot. I want to play tag instead.

And it looks like Thingy

wants to play with the ball.

We'll want to play different things. This could be tricky. Hmm.

do, and the loudest voice wins.

SAD MUSIC

Hmm. Two of us have ended up doing something we don't want to do.

Maybe loudest voice wins wasn't the fairest way to decide

what to do.

-No, neither of us wanted to play with the ball.

-I've got the answer!

-Democracy!

-How do we play that?

-It's today's treasure, remember?

-It'll help us do the thing most of us want to do.

But first let's learn more

by watching a story

that has a lot to say

about democracy.

Hello. I'm Amy. Thank you. This is Cole.

And we're going to tell you the surprising story

of the farmer's cart.

All done. Brilliant, high five.

Once, There was a farmer.

And he used the cart to carry their milk every day.

Save some for later, Cole.

All aboard.

Shall we go?

-Honk! Honk!

-Very good.

But today, as the farmer was

travelling along in his cart, something amazing happened.

One of the wheels started to talk.

"Look at me, turning around and driving this cart.

"I am the bestest, fastest, spin-iest wheel ever.

"Without me, this cart would just be a box.

"I'm in charge and I want to go faster. Toot, toot!"

Then something just as amazing happened.

The bolt that was holding the wheel together talked back.

"Excuse me, wheel,

"the other parts of the cart are just as important as you."

But the bolt hadn't finished talking yet.

"Lots of us other parts of the cart are feeling very tired

"and want to rest."

Oh!

"I'm tired of being pulled," said the handle.

"And I'm tired of being leaned on," said the wood.

Even the other wheels were tired.

"We're so tired of turning, turning, turning! Yawn!"

"Ahem! See, I may be only little, but everyone is important.

"I say we should have a vote. Who wants to go and who wants to stop?"

"I want to stop."

"I want to stop."

"We want to stop."

But the wheel ignored the bolt and the other parts of the cart

and kept on going even faster.

"I don't have to listen to a tiny bolt

"or any other parts of the cart.

"I'm the wheel, what I say is much more important.

"Now, I'm very busy driving the farmer and his milk.

"Faster, faster!"

Well, the bolt did not like that one bit.

"How dare that wheel, there's only one of him and lots of us.

"Well, we may be smaller than the wheel,

"but what we say still matters."

So the bolt decided to teach the wheel a lesson.

The bolt pushed...

..until eventually she popped out of the cart completely.

Well, the wheel didn't notice at first,

but then, suddenly, the wheel came off, too.

GASPS

The farmer couldn't believe what had happened.

And that's when the wheel realised something.

"I should have listened to that the bolt.

"Without all the other parts of the cart, I can't go anywhere.

"I'm sorry."

"We forgive you, wheel,

"but remember next time that everyone is important.

"All of us parts should listen to each other. That's fair."

The wheel listened to what the other cart parts

had to say, and they all agreed to have a long, well-earned rest.

Hi, I'm Vappy and I'm seven. This is my little brother Fraser.

He's five. We love reading books.

We get lots of our books from our local library.

These books are due back today.

Do you want to gather them up and we'll take back to the library?

We love going to the library. There are so many books to choose from.

A few years ago, our local library was going to close,

so Mum and I campaigned to keep it open.

Campaigning means letting people know about something you believe in.

He would creep up behind them before going, "Boo!"

We've chosen some more books for this week,

so we need to check them out...

..and return our other books.

We think our library is great, so we are making posters and flyers

to tell everyone, to encourage them to use the library as well.

These are beautiful, guys. Shall we go and photocopy them?

-Yeah.

-Go on, you pick them up and we'll go and do that.

BARRY: Ooh! Those are nice pictures!

They're not just pictures, Barry, they're special posters.

Oh. That's a clever way of making

VAPPY: We are also handing out flyers.

Even though I'm small, my voice can still be heard.

I hope even more people will enjoy visiting the library now.

Hi, I'm Lilly, and I'm seven.

Today is the last day of school before the summer holidays.

This morning, we're in for a treat because we filled our jar.

This is our teacher, Mrs Hope.

We need to vote for what we want our treat to be,

cos it's got to be fair, hasn't it?

So Lilly's going to explain to us how the voting system works.

You can tick whichever box you want.

We can either have a whole afternoon doing whatever we want...

This one is at the park, this one is at a movie in the classroom,

and this one is a party,

party in the classroom.

So the team with the most votes would win.

It's really important that the whole class think carefully

about their votes, and choose which treat they would like.

So remember, everyone, this part's quiet, OK?

There's no talking and your voting is secret.

BARRY: It can be this hard

to decide something

-when there are lots of you.

-I know.

That's why giving everyone a vote means it's fair.

Democracy doesn't mean everyone gets their way,

but everyone gets a say.

LILLY: I get to vote, too. I'm not

telling anyone what I'm voting for.

We fold up the paper so no-one can see what other people voted for.

Now it's time to put our votes in the ballot box.

Next job, we need to count them.

Now everyone has voted, it's time to find out what our treat will be.

So, Lilly and I have counted up all your votes,

and the winner is... we're going to be park!

This is so exciting.

We all get to enjoy a treat on the very last day of school.

We all voted, had our say,

and now we all get to have fun.
