Who Let The Dogs Out?

is a show about flipping dogs, bizarre dog stuff

from around the world, quick tricks and dogs learning daring stunts.

Today's challenge is dock diving.

Dock diving is a high-energy dog sport where dogs run along the dock

towards a pool or a lake.

In this challenge, dogs will learn to leap as far as they can into a lake.

They can jump from the end of a wooden ramp,

or from the end of a raised dock.

The dog that jumps the furthest into the water is the winner.

As the dock is much higher than the ramp,

dogs brave enough to jump from here will go much further.

For this challenge,

I need three confident dogs that love to swim and aren't scared of water.

They also need to be play-motivated, so we can reward with a toy.

Let's see how it went at try-outs.

Over 400 kids brought their dogs to the try-outs.

They all hoped that Zak would take them to the Dog House

to learn an incredible stunt.

That was pretty impressive!

He saw dancing dogs, acting dogs, fast dogs

and very...still...dogs!

Some drank too much water and then, they peed!

All these dogs and trainers did every trick in the book

just to see if Zak would take them to his big fancy Dog House.

But they didn't even know what stunt they'd end up learning.

Zak only needed three teams for every stunt, not 400!

In the end, for dock diving, he chose these ones.

My name's Abi and I'm from Durham.

-My dog's called Jet.

-Why do you want to come to the Dog House?

Cos I think Jet's got good potential and I want to train dock diving.

OK, that sounds cool.

When we take her down to the river, she to jump in, back legs first.

-You mean backwards?

-Yeah.

-She looks smart. Show me the good stuff.

Yeah, yeah, yeah! That's what I like to see! Look at this energy!

This is Abigail. She's 12-years-old and her dog Jet is two.

Good girl!

When Abigail's not playing football, she does agility training with Jet.

OK, what's your next trick?

Anyway, the weirdest thing about Jet is that she doesn't bark.

Yeah! A dog that does not bark!

Let her know you really mean stay right now and walk away.

Abigail and Jet were so good Zak felt Abigail would have no problem

teaching Jet to dock dive.

Abigail, Jet, you did fantastic! You made my day. Thank you very much.

My dog's name is Seren and is a weirmaraner.

My name's Ted. I want to come to the Dog House

because me and Seren make a great team and I really love her.

She's a gorgeous dog. Show me what she can do, please.

Ted is ten and his dog Seren is one.

Seren is Welsh for star!

And Seren has a star pattern on her chest, like a superhero!

-Her main motivation is play more than food, is that correct?

-Yes.

Hey, I've got it! Maybe Seren is a dog superhero.

Sit! Stay!

Seren loves chasing peacocks.

They must be criminal peacocks, of course.

She does like that ball!

Although Seren is young and clearly a superhero,

Zak felt Ted could easily teach her to dock dive.

See if she'll retrieve this.

I've seen everything I need to see.

My name's Sarah. My dog's name is Millie

-and she's a golden retriever.

-Show me some tricks, please.

Sarah is eleven and her dog Millie is three.

Fantastic!

Sarah loves to play tennis, but she's not the only one.

Millie, her dog, loves tennis balls too.

You might think that would cause friction, but apparently not.

I love training Millie

and it'll be great for her to learn something new.

-Do you ever reward with tennis balls?

-Sometimes, when we're out on walks.

Zak suggested Sarah should use one of her precious tennis balls

to persuade Millie to dock dive.

-You can do anything you want to do. Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

So, Abigail and Jet, Ted and Seren and Sarah and Millie

all made it into the Dog House.

There, they will undertake two days of intense expert dog training,

before going head-to-head in the dock-diving challenge

and the winner will take home the Who Let The Dogs Out? top trophy!

Training day one.

Hey, guys. What's going on? How are we doing today?

-You feel pretty good?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

As you guys can see, we are at the dock today.

Who wants to take a guess as to what we're teaching?

-Is it dock diving?

-You got it!

Does Sarah look a bit worried about dock diving?

Dock diving is one of those really fun things to teach your dog

and it takes a very confident, energetic dog to do this.

-Your dogs like to swim. They're all comfortable with the water?

-Yeah.

Once we get going,

this is the type of trick that tends to accelerate quickly.

We're going to start training right now.

Abi and Jet, let's go over here.

The first thing I like to do when doing a trick of this nature

is to get the dogs comfortable with the texture of the dock.

We want to make sure they're comfortable with it.

I want you to play fetch down this ramp.

That's it.

Hey, look. Jet's not scared of the ramp.

-I reckon Jet's going to jump straight in.

-Nice. Good!

Good! Show me some happiness!

Yes! I was right! One soggy doggy coming up!

Good, good! Keep going!

Hey! I am pretty good at this prediction malarkey!

I predict Jet will jump in again.

That's what I like to see from a potential dock-diving dog.

Ted and Seren, come on over.

Ted says that Seren loves swimming.

So let's get comfortable walking around on the dock.

Now, I happen to know that Millie got a real fright recently

when she jumped into a lake and couldn't get out.

So, if Millie can be a little scared of water,

she's probably going to take this very slowly.

Call her back.

Easy does it, Millie. Be careful.

This is letting the dog be comfortable to do their own thing.

Hmm... She doesn't look very confident, does she?

Go! Good girl, that's it!

Jet's pretty confident running about on that dock,

She's a golden retriever and they like to swim. Usually.

Millie's looking more confident now she's been swimming.

She did it! Millie actually jumped. Wow! And what a jump!

Millie has just dock dived! That was totally unpredictable!

I mean nobody, not even me, could have predicted that!

Jet, Seren and Millie are dogs that were bred for different jobs.

Let's take a look at their mutt measurements.

Jet is a border collie.

Jet loves tennis balls and will do anything to get one.

She's quite partial to a tummy tickle too.

Now Jet competes in agility,

so she should have no problem learning how to dock dive,

but will she be brave enough to throw herself off the dock? Hmm.

Next up, we have Seren. Seren is a weimaraner.

She loves swimming. She'll fetch anything,

but her favourite thing in the world is a tennis ball.

She also likes the family cat. The family cat?! What a softy!

Seren's love of fetching is the main reason

she could easily learn this stunt and might even jump the furthest.

Hmm!

Millie is a golden retriever.

Golden retrievers were originally bred to fetch game

from the water and this explains why Millie likes to swim.

Her favourite thing is people,

with tennis balls coming a close second.

Millie should excel at dock diving,

but will she be able to jump as far as the others? Hmm!

It's training day two. I wonder how the dogs are getting on.

Will we get any more dock dives today?

-Hey, guys. How's it going?

-Good.

-OK.

You're involved with training. Tell me how training's been going.

-Really well! She's improved.

-She hasn't tried to jump off the dock.

She was going to but she lost her confidence.

I'll want to see shortly. Ted, tell me how training's been going.

I think it's quite nice because she's really confident in the water

and off the ramp. She's nearly there, off the edge of the dock.

You think she's going to do that by tomorrow? That's not very far away.

-Yeah. I'm half confident.

-how confident?

-Half.

-Sarah, what's new with you?

-Well, Millie sort of went downhill today.

She'd been jumping off the dock, but now she finds an easier route

-and goes down the ramp.

-I'm curious to see how all of you're doing.

I'm going to start with you, Ted. You guys, practise over here.

Although Seren is confident jumping from the ramp,

there's no way of telling if she will jump from the dock.

Get her attention with the ball. OK, and go.

-Very nice.

-Good dog!

-Yeah! Nice work! Good job!

And now, let me see how she reacts when you roll it into the dock.

-Very gently.

-Fetch!

-Very good.

Let's see what happens.

Good. I'm going to let you do this. Good, go on.

Just throw it. If she goes, she goes.

She just needs to finds her superpowers, that's all.

You've got to work on with her between now and tomorrow,

making it exciting. Keep up the good work.

I think your odds are exactly right, about 50-50.

She might do it. Keep that trust going, seize that momentum.

Get her really pepped about the ball before you throw it.

You're building her confidence. This can take time.

You guys are doing everything right.

Sarah told Zak that earlier today, Millie lost her confidence

and stopped jumping, so she might never dock dive again. Tickety-tick.

Wait. And...

What?! Well, that is not a dog that's lost its confidence.

I'm beginning to think that Millie is very unpredictable.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. She's doing very well.

But there is one small risk that you have that you need to watch for.

Often when a dog does it this early, they start to question themselves.

Like, "Wait a minute. You know what? Maybe I don't want to do this."

It's a possibility.

Come on, let's go.

Now, here are Zak's six steps to dock diving.

Number 1, allow your dog to get used to the dock's surface.

2, when they're happy,

encourage your dog to play fetch on the slope of the ramp.

3, let the ball roll into the water and allow your dog to fetch it.

4, once your dog's happy doing that,

get your dog to swim out a little to retrieve the ball.

5, encourage your dog to jump from the ramp.

6, when they're confident and you're sure they can do it,

let the dog try to jump off the dock.

Today, we'll teach Nelly how to spin.

Any time you're teaching your dog a new trick,

it's important that you make it worth their while.

Use something they love - it can be a treat or a toy.

Today, I'm using a toy with Nelly.

We're going to teach spin by encouraging her to move.

The reason I'm saying "left spin"

is because I want Nelly to understand how to spin both left and right.

Dogs are capable of understanding the difference between left and right -

they're more intelligent than most people realise.

Let's try right.

Now Nelly's starting to understand the difference between the two,

I think we can start to mix them up a little bit. Left.

Right.

Now, she knows left, she knows right.

If your dog knew another trick, like, say, back up,

you could start to get very fancy with this.

There are currently over 1,000 dogs in Japan doing dog yoga

with their handlers.

The dogs are lifted,

hugged and stroked for that sense of inner calm.

See? He looks calm.

Of course, when a handler raises a leg, it's yoga.

If a dog raises its leg, it could mean something - ahem -

completely different.

Now, this is O2 arena,

where O2 stands for oxygen.

Yes, in Japan, you're no-one in the pampered pup world

if you haven't got your own personal oxygen capsule.

Apparently David Beckham has one,

but this oxygen capsule is specially adapted for dogs.

Hm, a dogs-ygen capsule.

Concentrated oxygen is meant to revive the body

and give it more energy. It can help reactivate cells,

heal injuries AND make the fur glossy.

I suppose that's why David Beckham's fur is always so glossy.

The three days of dock-diving training are now over.

It's time for Millie, Seren and Jet

to compete in Zak's dock-diving challenge.

And only one of them can win.

Abigail and Jet's hard work paid off.

Earlier today, Jet finally jumped from the dock.

She's jumped off three times but lost her confidence a bit.

Sarah and Millie have also been practising hard

over the last three days.

But, as we know, Millie can be very unpredictable

and she might not jump.

We've just got to see what happens.

OK. When we last saw Ted and superhero Seren,

they were jumping really far from the ramp.

I just wonder whether Seren has learnt to jump from the dock.

Seren is surprisingly good at dock diving, actually.

She's the best dog anybody could have.

Today, it's a big day.

Yes, it is show-time!

Who will jump from the dock?

It's show time for our dock divers.

The dogs should leap into the water, as far as they can go,

but only if they're comfortable with it.

The markers in the water will determine how far they've jumped.

First up on this soggy show-time, we have Ted and Seren.

Now, each of them get three jumps

and it looks like Ted and Seren are going to use the ramp.

Whoa!

No hesitation!

Cool!

Oh, yes.

That was a spectacular ramp jump, but how far was it?

Wow! 1.3 metres.

Yeah, pretty good for a ramp jump,

but will it be enough to beat the others?

Go get it!

Whoa, whoa! Another great jump.

How far was that one?

1.5 metres!

Whoa, that's even further!

This is superhero Seren's last jump.

OK. Go!

Whoa! How far was that?

Another 1.5 metres!

So if Jet and Millie do not jump from the dock,

Seren could easily win this.

Now, next up, we've got Sarah and Millie.

Well, will Millie jump from the dock?

Will Millie jump at all?

Ha! She is SO unpredictable!

What is she doing?!

WOW!

Good girl!

Oh, surely that's blown Seren's jump out of the water!

Ooh, how far was that?

3.4 metres!

Good one!

Now she's gearing up for a second go.

Whoa! Oh, another incredible jump!

Has she beaten her own record?

She is the incredible flying dog.

Simple as that. That's how it is.

Cor! Ooh, another amazing, unbelievable jump!

There's not stopping this dog.

Earlier today, Jet did jump from the dock but will she do it now?

If she doesn't, she'll never beat Millie.

Oh, no. Where's she going?

Well, it was a great jump,

but it most certainly will not beat Millie's distance.

That was only 1.6 metres.

Although that beats Seren's best jump.

They're going for the dock again.

Oh, no. Jet's having none of it.

It's a disaster for Abigail.

How far was that?

That was 1.2 metres, Jet.

Last go. Will she jump from the dock?

Come on, Jet, you can do it. Come on.

Oh, come on! Come on, come on!

Ohh...

Urgh!

Never mind, it was still a great jump. Now, how far was it?

cos Millie jumped off the dock and none of our dogs did!

I don't mind. It's not the winning that matters,

it's spending time with your dog and the experience.

She's done fantastically. She started jumping off the bank

and then the ramp and then finally the dock,

which was just a fantastic feeling.
