On today's Who Let The Dogs Out?

we'll see some helpful house hounds,

some mutt makeovers,

more quick tricks,

and dogs who are doing "trolley" interesting things.

Plus, three dogs will learn an awesome new trick.

Today we're going to learn Frisbee,

my all-time favourite dog sport.

I'm really looking forward to this one.

In this challenge,

the dogs must learn to catch a Frisbee mid-air.

Each catch will count for one point.

However, if the dogs manage to make a catch over the 10-metre line,

they'll get two points per catch.

For Frisbee, I need three agile, play-motivated dogs.

High energy is good, and a great relationship is essential.

That's exactly what I was looking for at the tryouts.

Over 400 kids brought their dogs to the tryouts.

What a sweet dog.

All hoping Zak would take them to the Doghouse

-to learn an incredible stunt.

-Very good.

We saw walking dogs...

Clever girl.

Waving dogs...

Husky dogs...

We had dogs dressed up like a VIP.

-Is Puzzle wearing glasses?

-Yeah.

-And dogs who took a while to wee.

-SHE LAUGHS

But only three teams really impressed Zak enough

to take part in a Frisbee challenge.

Let's meet them.

My name's Jake, and my dog's name is Mist, and I come from London.

-Show me some tricks.

-Paw.

Jake is 11, and Mist is a year old.

Mist, sit.

Stay.

Jake was inspired by weather when naming Mist. He liked the name Sky,

but thought it sounded a bit girly. So he called him Mist.

That was a really good stay.

Jake came to the tryouts wearing what he described as his lucky hat.

I would like to teach him to catch a Frisbee.

See if he'll play with this.

Zak thought he came alive when he played with toys.

Will the sky be the limit for Misty McFrisbee?

-Yes. As long as they don't break it.

-It doesn't break easy.

-Off!

-That's OK.

My name's Hannah, my dogs named Max,

and he's a German Shepherd cross.

Why do you want to go to the Doghouse?

I'd love to go to the Doghouse cos it would be a chance for me and Max

to build our relationship, and it would be cool to learn new tricks.

Ready, Max?

Hannah is 13 and Max is 2.

Hannah calls her dog Mad Max,

-as he's so full of energy.

-Good boy.

Max never goes anywhere without his backpack.

What's he got in the backpack?

He's got water in one side and a purse in the other.

His main motivation is what?

He likes treats the most,

but he loves his Frisbee as well.

OK, that's interesting.

Zak loved how focused and energetic Max was,

but will he stop chewing and start catching the Frisbee?

Keep it on the carpet. Please do that again.

My name's Molly, and this is Indy,

and I'm from Exeter.

Why do you want to come to the Doghouse?

Everyone will like to see Indy's tricks, and everyone will like him.

Shake!

-Molly is 11. Indiana is 3.

-Lie down.

-She nicknamed him Indy for short.

-Good boy.

Very nice tone of voice.

-Up!

-Beautiful.

-Yay!

-Very good!

Molly describes Indy as lovable,

and says he's so friendly that when anyone's sad, he cheers them up.

Molly and Indy love watching TV together,

and guess what their favourite channel is.

-You guys watch CBBC together?

-Yeah,

-he loves watching animal programmes and things.

-Can you catch?

-I can.

-Oh, almost.

Or I can't!

Zak thought Molly and Indiana had great attitude,

and as Labradoodles love to play and learn,

Frisbee could be the perfect trick for this team.

-Oh!

-You wish.

Indy!

So, Jake and Mist,

Hannah and Max,

and Molly and Indiana

all made it into the Doghouse.

They're going head to head in a Frisbee challenge,

and the winner will take home this,

the Who Let The Dogs Out? Top Dog Trophy.

Training Day One.

Jake, Hannah and Molly are about to find out

what trick they're going to learn.

How we doing?

You are going to be teaching your dogs

how to play Frisbee.

-Wicked.

-Yay!

-Ready to learn how to do this?

-Yeah.

The first thing we have to do when teaching a dog to play Frisbee

is get them interested in Frisbee.

So, what I like to do is get on the ground with them.

So let's get down on the ground.

Let's get them interested by moving it around. Let's get into it.

Now, we've already seen that Jake's dog Mist gets pretty excited

when Frisbees are about.

Mist is the youngest dog,

so will he be able to pay attention and learn this trick?

Hmmm.

Now, let me see this Frisbee for a second.

Looks like you're doing pretty well.

You got a lot of holes...

-Yeah.

-..in the Frisbee here.

-Which is kind of good, it means Mist is really into it.

-Yeah.

Come on, Mist.

Get the Frisbee.

Awesome. Very good, Jake.

Max is having problems!

We heard at tryouts that his most loved toy is his blue Frisbee.

Hannah and Zak must find a way to make him part with it

for a special Doghouse Frisbee.

It's OK. Let go.

Let go.

Ah-ah. No.

He's like, "I'm not letting go of my Frisbee."

OK, we'll go to Plan B. Do you have any treats on you?

We're trying to get him to let go.

-Maybe if we put the hot dog in his mouth...

-Yeah.

Do you see that?

The hot dog in his mouth -

and he's not budging.

It's Zak's double turkey portions that finally make the breakthrough.

Yes! Good boy! Awesome!

Yes.

Now, we've seen Indiana can play Frisbee,

so Molly shouldn't find it hard

training him to catch them from a further distance than in tryouts.

Let's learn how to teach our dogs to take a Frisbee now.

What does that mean? We don't want them going for it without permission.

Indiana! Getting interest, getting interest...

Take it.

We wait until our dog actually takes the Frisbee before we say "take it."

Good. Oh my gosh, she just caught it!

I instinctively threw it up and she caught it out of the air.

That was cool. It was excellent.

Come here, Mist. Take it.

Yes! Good.

OK. Ah-ah.

Yes! Good. Wonderful.

You can see we're succeeding in actually making the Frisbee a reward.

Max is refusing to take the Doghouse Frisbee,

-but Hannah has come up with a plan.

-You put a treat in there?

-Yeah.

You are thinking. I like you. You are a thinker.

You associate treats with the Frisbee - "This is a fun thing!

"Look, it gives food".

Gah! Max is still rejecting the new Frisbee.

That's what you want to build on.

Get to work.

# Who let the dogs out?

Frisbee is a whole lot of fun,

but it's probably not the most useful trick in the world.

Here are some dogs who have learned to have fun

and help out at the same time.

Hey ho, a dog's work is never done.

There's the house to tidy,

socks to put in drawers,

then there's the shopping.

A-tchoo!

-There's looking after your trainer.

-Thank you, Lily.

Who's not very hygienic. Eugh.

So how's the shopping going?

Pop off and get me a drink in a purple carton, would you please?

The dog's world is full of Gok Wans.

"Lose the jacket, girlfriend."

Now we're going on holiday,

so it's important to turn out the lights, please. Thank you.

And pack only what you need.

Brilliant! You've got my drink.

There are certain jobs that only a dog can do,

like saving a drowning carrot.

There. Now, off to make some soup.

Our soup dog did well.

Give him some money.

But, uh...not this one.

All right, guys, we're going to move on to the next step.

We're going to roll the Frisbee on the ground. What we do -

we simply make a muscle

and roll it, like that.

That teaches them to follow it on the ground. Look at the interest.

Wonderful work.

No problems for Molly and Indiana. Good work.

Roll it like this.

Then give him some, let him chase it.

Let go, let go a little bit, not all the way. Good, good.

Hannah! Zak said roll it, not throw it.

Once they get it like that, once they chase that rolling Frisbee,

we want them to bring it back.

So, we want to run from them.

Wait to get the attention. Now run.

Good, come on. See that? Beautiful. That's how we teach to retrieve.

Dogs love to chase.

Jake is having problems with Mist's concentration.

He seemed interested in the Frisbee at first,

but then he's got more interested in the surroundings.

When our dogs get bored in the beginning with Frisbee, guess what?

That's completely normal.

We have to continue to build their interest over time.

-Max seems to be giving the Frisbee too much attention.

-Go! Run!

See how dogs love to chase?

Good. He let go, he went to you. See if you can get the Frisbee back.

-Max! Sit.

-He won't give it back!

-Let me see happiness.

-Max, drop it!

In your case, you have to work out how to manage his interest in it.

You guys have done a fantastic job.

Mist, Max and Indiana are similar sizes,

but they have completely different characteristics.

Let's take a look at their mutt measurements.

# Who let the dogs out? #

Mist is a border collie.

They're clever, fast, and focused,

so they make great Frisbee dogs.

Mist's hobby is to chew slippers

and he's ruined all of Jake's family's slipper collection.

His favourite game is hide and seek.

Let's hope he does less hiding

than seeking that Frisbee.

Next up, we have Max.

He's a German Shepherd mixed with border collie.

German shepherds are strong, smart

and often used as police dogs.

Max's party trick is that he can pull socks off everyone's feet.

After he's pulled off a sock, he does a dance.

Will Max be able to swap socks in his mouth for Frisbees

when it comes to showtime?

Only time will tell.

And finally, here's Indiana.

Indiana is a labradoodle,

a labrador crossed with a poodle.

Labradoodles are often energetic and enjoy playing.

Indy's favourite toy is a teddy bear

that he's had since he was a puppy.

Indy's most loved pastime is running around the house madly.

Will he have the same energy

running to catch some Frisbees?

It's Training Day Two,

and there are some misdemeanours in the field.

Mist has finally started to love Frisbees...

all of them.

-Mist has the wrong Frisbee!

-Mist!

She has taken the Frisbees from the other dogs.

What's been the most challenging thing for you in practice so far?

Probably Mist concentrating on the Frisbee.

Come on! Go fetch.

Mist! Get the Frisbee.

Play Frisbee, Mist.

Will Mist ever be able to focus?

He's still easily distracted,

especially by other dogs' Frisbees.

-Mist!

-This isn't yours.

Mist! Come on!

How did practice go yesterday? What did you have trouble with?

I had the most trouble with Max biting the Frisbee.

Sit. Good boy.

Max! Frisbees aren't that tasty.

Max, drop.

Show me real quick, real quick.

-Come on, Max.

-Good, good.

-Come, Max.

-Let me see him let go.

Good boy, Max. Drop.

He loves chewing the Frisbee so much he's not giving it back to Hannah.

They'll not get many throws in at showtime

if Max doesn't retrieve the Frisbee.

-How we doing, Molly?

-I'm good, thank you.

-Very good.

So, what have you been succeeding the most with in practice?

Probably getting him to just focus his attention.

Sit.

Perfect attention, perfect drooling.

Perfect Frisbee retrieval. Good dog.

Beautiful.

OK, have him bring it back.

If he lets go, I'll be thrilled.

-Drop! Good boy.

-A plus. Beautiful.

Zak has a solution for Jake and Mist's problems.

What I think you've got to do is pick up that energy level,

be more playful. You're in good shape, you like to play?

-Yeah.

-So do dogs. You're a good team.

-We're going to move onto the next step. Are you ready?

-Yep.

-Yeah.

Let's practice throwing it at about 5 to 10 metres with your dogs.

Go ahead, let me see where you are.

Good, good.

-Very nice!

-Good boy!

Molly and Indiana have our first full Frisbee catch.

And the second!

And he's retrieving it!

That's what I want to see.

Will Max be able to catch Hannah's throw?

-Oh, not quite.

-Nice work.

Where's your celebration? Come on.

Maybe this time, Max.

Now THERE'S some competition for Molly and Indiana.

Our second Frisbee-catching dog.

But Max still isn't bringing it straight back to Hannah.

Frisbee retrieval will be crucial when it comes to showtime.

Remember, the thing we want to do

is increase the distance with the Frisbee,

so they go at least 10 metres.

Too far! Too far, Jake!

You want to start short and gradually increase.

Mist, go!

Good! Good, good, good!

Mist caught it.

All the dogs have done it now.

An amazing end to Day Two.

Guys, looking wonderful.

Now you've got three weeks to practise,

then you'll come back here to the Doghouse for showtime,

and we're going to see which dog catches the most Frisbees.

In order for a dog to be truly happy,

they've got to have mental and physical stimulation.

And Frisbee definitely gives them that.

# Who let the dogs out? #

Here are Zak's six steps for teaching your dog Frisbee.

One - get your dog interested

by getting low and moving the Frisbee around.

Two - make sure your dog learns to take the Frisbee and also let go.

Three - roll the Frisbee a short distance for your dog to take,

then run from your dog to get the energy and enthusiasm.

Four - get your dog to retrieve the Frisbee, returning it to you.

Five - try to throw the Frisbee 5-10 metres for your dog to catch.

Six - practise an hour a day and your dog will soon be a Frisbee pro.

There are lots of little tricks

that are fun for you and your dog to learn.

Today, Nelly and I are going to show your dog how to high-five.

Come on, Nelly. There's a good girl.

You're fantastic. Look what I got.

When we do this, we want to start by encouraging them to lift their paw.

I find the easiest way to do this is to tickle the back of their paw

until they lift it, then I'm going to click.

For those of you who don't know how a clicker works, it's very simple.

When your dog does the right thing, you click and give them a treat.

Very quickly, your dog will learn

that the click means it's done something right.

Then, in your own time, you can give them the reward. Simple.

I'm going to try this paw here.

CLICK Yes, very good.

Once I feel like she's starting to get the hang of it,

I'll say the word "paw" in this case,

then we'll work up to a high-five in a second.

Very good. Paw.

CLICK Wonderful job, very good.

Let's see if we can do it without having to touch her foot.

Nelly? Paw.

Now I want to encourage her to go a bit higher, so we can do a high-five.

Everyone wants their dog to look their best,

and it's one thing to have a well-groomed dog,

but some people... well, they take it just a little too far.

Prepare to be amazed,

and please, don't try this at home.

Welcome to Hollywood, where dreams really can come true.

Especially if you're a dog who dreams of the latest fashions.

Casuals, knitwear, they've got it.

Rhinestone leads, check.

It's Hollywood style. We take the dog with the limo,

with the birthday cookie,

we also do the manicure, pedicure.

Purple claws are so in this year,

and so are doggy spa treatments.

Spoiled Hollywood hounds get shampooing and conditioning,

aromatherapy and designer clothes.

"Oh, that W vest is so you. 500, please."

I do a lot for Miss Kisses. She's my everything.

I don't have a husband or children. She's my little girl,

so I have her pouffed and pampered and pink as much as possible.

Lucy gets her hair cut,

gets her nails done, gets her teeth brushed.

You don't even have to leave your house to get your canines brushed.

In Hollywood, people love the convenience

of a groomer coming to their house,

and they don't want to put a dirty dog in their luxury car.

Human shampoos can be too harsh,

so special dog products are used to make over these mutts,

leaving them looking like a million dollars.

Which is probably not far off from what it costs.

Meanwhile in China, there's a tiger dog,

there's a panda dog,

there's a bikini dog, turtle dog...

Is that Spiderman dog?

Next to zebra dog?

Yes, in China, all you need is a dog, some dye,

and a crazy sense of what actually looks good,

and you get yourself two animals for the price of one.

This is Kung Fu.

He's 10 months old, and he's an Old English Sheepdog.

Once well-known as a cute puppy,

he's getting a special mutt makeover to turn him into a kung fu panda.

Just trim the fur short, bleach and dye it black and white, et voila!

It's that panda look, that's all the rage with, uh...

with other pandas, I suppose.

It can take six months before new fur grows back,

and Spiderman dog can reveal his identity as Real Dog.

And this new grooming trend can't be that great for dogs.

Besides, it makes them look plain silly.

I bet they're mega-embarrassed their trainer made them look like that.

So for the sake of your own lovely dog, don't try this at home.

# Who let the dogs out? #

Three weeks of intense training have come to an end.

This is the hardest test Mist,

Max,

and Indiana have ever faced.

There can only be one winner.

Jake had trouble with Mist's concentration,

and Mist was distracted by other dog's Frisbees.

But they've progressed well at home,

and Mist can now catch a Frisbee at distance.

-I feel Mist's improved a lot.

-Hannah and Max, after a tricky start,

have improved their catching technique,

but Max still struggles retrieving the Frisbee to Hannah.

Could this cost them the trophy at showtime?

It's not complete, but we're working on it, so hopefully he should be OK.

Molly and Indiana have progressed fantastically throughout training,

but will practice make perfect for them when it really matters?

I think Indy's improved

in his catching, and he's much more interested in the Frisbee.

Today is the big day.

It's showtime.

Who has mastered this challenge?

Who will catch the most Frisbees?

And who will win the Who Let The Dogs Out Top Dog Trophy?

It's showtime, and boy, have I been looking forward to this one.

This is where the competition will take place.

Each dog will have two minutes to make as many catches as they can.

Each catch will count for one point.

However, if the dogs can manage to make a catch over the 10-metre line,

they'll get two points per catch.

The dog who has the most points will take home this,

the Who Let The Dogs Out Top Dog Trophy.

First up, Jake and Mist.

-Your time will start on your first throw.

-Zak told Jake to improve his energy with Mist,

-and Jake has listened well.

Jake says Mist has been catching Frisbees every time at home.

Will this be their first point?

Ooh! Nearly.

Mist is so focused on that Frisbee,

he nearly knocks over one of the cameras.

Ooh, nearly.

Good boy, come on.

Jake, like every great dog trainer, stays positive,

even with only seconds left.

Time is up.

Excellent job. Mist didn't have any catches there,

but what you need to be very proud of is the fact he brought that back

so much more reliably than he had been before.

Next up, Hannah and Max.

Whenever you're ready.

But has Max taken to the new Frisbee?

Unbelievable! Over 10 metres!

That's two points.

Will Max retrieve it to Hannah after all his troubles?

Yes!

Taking a closer look at it,

the Frisbee was over the 10-metre mark when Max caught it,

and though it was very close, he landed just over the line.

Go on, Max! Go!

Another amazing catch, just short of the 10-metre line.

That's one more point for Hannah and Max.

They're up to five points.

Go on, Max. Yes!

-Another good catch.

-Good boy.

He's retrieving that Frisbee well.

Go on, Max, go on.

Unbelievable.

With time running out, that's over 10 metres.

Two more points for Hannah and Max.

Max has the retrieval skills to pay the bills.

With seconds left, this looks big.

It's another two-pointer.

Fantastic stuff!

an astonishing improvement from early training.

But will it be enough to win?

Will Molly and Indiana, excellent throughout training,
