Today, on Who Let the Dogs Out?

we go back in time with dogs from days of old.

Three new trainers catapult their way to success,

and Zak teaches Nelly another quick trick.

Hundreds of young trainers from all over the UK applied,

but only 27 dedicated trainers and their dogs were chosen

to come here - to the Dog House.

Today, Esther and Daisy, Isobel and Magic

and Daniel and Todd are going to be put to the test.

Let's find out why these teams wowed me at the try-outs.

This time on Who Let the Dogs Out?, there's only going to be one,

ultimate, top dog trainer in the whole series.

That means the try-outs were even busier and even tougher.

My name is Esther and I come from Shrewsbury.

This is Daisy and she's a Jack Russell cross.

Fetch!

Nice work!

-Fetch!

-Pretty good.

Me and Daisy have worked so hard

and it would be really good to get in to the Dog House.

-You have delighted me today. You have done very, very well.

-Thank you.

My name's Daniel. This is my dog - Todd - and he's a border collie.

Play dead. Good boy!

I'm feeling very excited about the try-outs.

I think me and Todd can do a pretty good job at it.

Look at his tail! Yeah, look at that!

Todd and me have been training very hard

and I think I will be the top dog trainer.

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-Good work!

My name is Isobel. My dog's name is Magic, and we come from Essex.

I really, really want to make it to the Dog House

because I'd love to teach Magic some new tricks.

I've been training him twice a week for about two hours,

-so he knows all the tricks.

-Keep up the good work!

-Thank you.

Zak decided all three trainers were good enough for the Dog House

and they impressed him so much, he decided to test them

with one of his most difficult challenges yet!

Right! Boy, your dogs are ready to go here.

-Are you guys really excited about what we're going today?

-Yes.

-Yes.

Me too. Today, you guys are going to learn

how to teach your dogs to load and fire a catapult.

Oh, no!

-Who said that?

-Me.

-But why?

-He'll never be able to do that.

-Why don't you think he's going to do it?

Once he has the ball in his mouth, I have to treat him to a treat

-to drop it.

-You need to have more faith than that, Daniel.

For this stunt, the dogs will learn to place a ball

in the catapult cup, launch the catapult,

retrieve the ball and bring it all the way back to the catapult.

At Show Time, the dog that fires the balls the furthest,

and retrieves them, will gain the most points.

Plus, 20 extra points will be awarded

every time the dog loads the catapult themselves.

Basically, I want you to think of this stunt in two parts.

We have launching the catapult and then we have loading the catapult.

The first thing we're going to do is focus on how to load the catapult.

You'll notice we have these bowls in front of your catapults here.

So, we're going to teach our dogs to drop a ball in the largest bowl

and then, hopefully, down to the smallest bowl.

I'm going to start with you, Isobel and Magic. Just do a light fetch

and ask him to bring it back. Here's what I want you to do!

When he brings it back, rather than taking it with your hand,

I want you to try and catch it with the bowl. That's the first thing.

-OK.

-Does that make sense?

-Yeah, sure.

-OK, let's try it.

-Magic, fetch!

-Nice throw.

-Very good. And get the ball.

-Magic!

-Good! Look at this!

-Magic!

-And encourage him to let go.

-Magic, leave. Magic, leave. Good boy!

-That's good, that's good.

Once the dogs learn to drop the ball into the smallest bowl,

they'll be ready to load the catapult

and, at Show Time, that will win them 20 points

every time they manage it.

Continue working on that. I'm going to move on to Daniel and Todd,

while you guys work on that, OK?

Did you see what we just did? I'd like you to try that with Todd.

So, go ahead and throw it!

Fetch it, Todd! Fetch it!

Toddy, come! Come, Toddy!

-He just drops it anywhere.

-I see. Does he always do that?

-Hmm.

We've got a long way to go on this one. Go ahead and keep him on leash.

I want you to try practising this and at very short range.

-Do you know what I mean?

-Yep. Todd. Toddy, come!

He's demonstrating, I don't feel like bringing it back to you.

We have to let our dogs know, "I'll play with you all day.

"You just have to play by the rules and play right.

So, that's what your objective is here.

So, just work right here. OK.

Now, Esther. Does Daisy like playing with the ball?

-She does. Yeah.

-She does. All right. Very good.

Let's go ahead and practise this. See if you can throw the ball.

Let's see if you can get her

-to somehow put it in that giant bowl there.

-OK.

It's not as easy as it looks. It really isn't.

Daisy, drop!

-Yes, very good!

-Good girl!

That's how you do it.

Keep that rhythm going and you'll have this taught in no time.

You guys are doing absolutely wonderful at this.

Remember, the hardest part about this trick

is teaching our dogs to drop the ball into the catapult launcher.

You're going to have to work exceptionally hard on this.

but sometimes you've just got to mess about and let loose.

Here are some dogs doing just that.

Hey, ever wondered what dogs got up to in the olden days?

Well, here they are!

Dogs had to have their paws cleaned by hand every day

and you had to jump through hoops to get anywhere.

It helped to keep in your trainer's good books - urgh!

And if you were really lucky, you got your own giant can of dog food.

In those days, people and dogs could go super slow.

And every dog had his own bicycle.

Ugrh! Are you two still at it?

An hour into training and Zak is back

to see if the teams are any closer to getting their dogs

to drop the ball into those bowls.

I cannot believe how well you guys are doing.

Look at all the progress you've made in just the past hour.

Esther and Daisy are clearly the strongest so far.

Daniel and Todd still have a long way to go.

As for Isobel, she's got much bigger problems on her hands.

Magic really, really loves tennis balls.

He likes chewing them.

And he got through eight balls.

And chewed them all.

Eating the balls instead of loading them

could be disastrous at Show Time.

-Magic really likes tennis balls, doesn't he?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

Right now, we're going to move on to actually how to launch the catapult,

-which should be interesting. Are you ready to do that?

-Yeah.

Now, let's encourage him over here.

Rather than just put the ball in there,

encourage him to put his paws here.

-Magic! Paw.

-Yes. Good. Now reward with the ball, like that.

So, the faster you do this, the more rhythm you keep,

the faster this trick gets taught. Just teach your dog

to push this down like this. If they do it in the slightest,

just throw the ball towards them. Encourage them to bring it back.

-Yeah.

-Let's get working.

I'm going to come over here to Esther.

-And Daisy...

-Mm. Will Daisy be any good at this part of the trick?

-Daisy!

-You got your ball? Whoa, yeah. Throw it. Good. Yes.

Oh yes. Go, Daisy!

Go ahead and put it in the launcher and see what we can do.

-Daisy!

-Looks like star pupil Daisy might have this in bag.

While poor Todd just seems a bit confused by the whole thing.

-Come on Todd. Paw, Toddy.

-Yes. Good. Let her know you like that.

It is those small little steps

that we have to let our dog know we appreciate and we like.

Toddy! Good boy, Todd!

Much better. Much better. Very good.

When he gets that pushing that launches that ball...

And he gets to play fetch. You know, the light bulb's going to go off.

-He's just got to learn to get it flying first.

-Exactly, exactly!

-Poor old Todd. Maybe he should just watch Daisy.

She's already becoming the firm favourite to win.

-The teams now have one week to practise,

before returning to the Dog House.

The best bit was actually getting in there and doing it.

Having a good time. The worst bit was

that Todd was losing interest

because there were a lot of distractions.

I think my biggest competitor in my group is Esther and Daisy.

Because Daisy can put the ball in the cup really well

and she's quite a fast dog, so she can really run at that pedal.

I think my training session with Zak went really rather well.

I really, really, really want to be in the final.

And, I think we've got quite a good chance

because Daisy's so well-behaved.

Most of the time!

Daisy, Todd, and Magic all look pretty different.

Let's take a look at their mutt measurements

and see just how different they really are.

First up, we have Daisy,

who's a five-year-old Jack Russell, Border Terrier Cross.

Terriers are among the most fearless dogs and Esther reckons

that if Daisy was any character, then she'd be Lassie

because she's so loyal and so clever!

We know that Daisy likes to fetch stuff,

but will she be able to launch the catapult and then fetch?

Next up is Todd, the seven-year-old Border Collie.

Border Collies love herding and will even try to herd people

if you let them.

According to Daniel, Todd hates Hoovers, rainy days

and the sound of tinfoil. So, let's hope that he likes canine catapults.

Magic is four years old and he's a Spanish Water dog,

which means he actually has webbed feet.

Wow, yeah, just like a duck!

But, will Magic be able to put those webbed feet to good use

and fire the catapult?

One week on, and with that all-important

quarter final spot up for grabs,

the competition is really hotting up.

The trainers have returned to The Doghouse

and Zak wants to find out who's got what it takes

to make it to the next round.

Look at you, guys! Doing fantastic on these catapult launchers.

Unbelievable progress!

Your dogs are listening to you much, much better here.

All three dogs can now launch the catapult,

but loading the ball into the cup is still proving tricky.

Any team that can nail this part of the stunt

will have a huge advantage when it comes to Show Time.

-How do you feel? Are you feeling good?

-Yeah, I'm feeling good.

Now, how has it gone with placing the ball in the launcher itself?

He really doesn't understand how to do it.

I don't think he will do it.

I would still work on it, though.

Remember, that is a massive 20-point

bonus to you every single time he does that.

You would have to really spend every waking moment teaching this

to get him to that point. It might be a better...

Did Magic just ping an invisible ball there?

Well, they're making progress, but something tells me

Esther and Daisy are probably doing quite well too.

Oh, Esther and Daisy certainly make quite a team.

-And now let's see her try and do the launching.

-Daisy! Come on!

-Good energy! That's it.

Ooh, not enough power there from Daisy.

That could be a problem for them.

-Does Daisy play tug-of-war?

-Yes, she does.

-OK, very good. Now, you don't have a tug toy, do you?

That's good because I always do. A trick like this means

that we have to have energy. And our dogs really feed off of that.

I want you to try and play tug-of-war with her a little bit.

I want you to get her pepped up. Really good. Get into it.

And then I want you to try running up

and encouraging her to put her paws up here. Good, oh there she goes!

-Good! That's it.

-Daisy!

-Daisy, jump it! Yeah!

I love this about her, that instinct plus reward from the tug toy.

You understand that.

Beautiful job.

So, here are Zak's five steps to teaching your dog

how to fire a catapult.

One. Encourage your dog to drop a tennis ball into a bowl.

Two. Gradually reduce the size of the bowl

until your dog can drop the tennis ball into the catapult launcher.

Three. Get your dog used to the idea of firing the catapult

by jumping onto the launching board.

Throw the ball straight away so they'll understand what happens

when they step on the launcher.

Four. Encourage your dog to fetch the ball

and make sure they bring it straight back to you.

Five. Put all of the steps together so that your dog drops the ball

into the catapult launcher, fires it and then collects the ball.

My training plan over these two days are going to be,

we're going to go to the park and practice and practice.

Todd didn't put in the cup as many time as I would like him to,

or he didn't push the pedal as hard as I wanted him to.

I'm just going to be focusing on loading.

She can gets all of her points for loading.

Today's trick is a real crowd pleaser.

Your friends and family will absolutely love this one.

But the main thing to remember about this is,

keep it fun for your dog and he'll do it all day long.

So, today I'm going to show you how to teach your dog to bow.

Come over here. Let's come around. Heel.

That's is. Perfect, perfect. Very good.

If you've taught your dog to lie down,

they're already halfway there.

Think of this as kind of like a half a lie down.

OK. Come on. Up here!

I'm going to lure her down, but see how she wants to lie down?

That's completely normal. Don't be discouraged by that.

They're drawing from what they've learned. Come here.

Up here. Good? We're going to lure her down.

I'm going to have my hand right here under her belly.

The reason I'm keeping my hand under her belly,

is in the event she goes into a down,

I want to let her know, "Don't go that far."

And she's getting closer, but I think we can make this look even better.

Remember, always engage your dog a lot when you're teaching this.

Some dogs have truly incredible stories.

I was amazed when I heard this next one,

and I think you will be too.

This is the Vafa Animal Shelter in Iran,

where this little dog was rescued from the side of the road

after being run over.

Vets quickly realised that his back legs were paralysed,

but they named him Omid, which means "hope".

It looked like Omid might never walk again.

But help was on its way!

Look at this puppy.

Puppy needs a home. Permanent home. Right, Omid?

Omid was given a life-changing gift.

He got a new set of wheels!

Look at him go!

He can walk, he can run.

And Omid has also been found a new family and a new home -

the other side of the world. In America!

# Who let the dogs out? #

Ten days of catapult training are over.

It is time for our three trainers to go head to head.

But only one can stay in the competition.

So who will hold their nerve?

I'm feeling very nervous about Show Time because you just don't know

what will happen. It's like there's a big drop

and you don't know what's down there.

Who will keep their focus?

I feel grateful that I've got this far.

Cos a lot of people didn't get this far and I feel very grateful

that I did get this far.

And who will catapult their way to the quarter-final?

I'm just hoping we can do our best and I hope we can win.

It is time to find out.

It's Show Time for our catapulting dogs

and this is where it's all going to take place.

The teams will have two minutes to fire that catapult

as many times as possible.

If they manage to get their dogs to load and fire the catapult,

they'll get an extra 20 points,

and these flags indicate how many points they'll receive

when that ball lands.

The landing area has been divided into sections,

with the furthest offering 20 points.

Once the ball has been fired and retrieved,

the dog must bring it back beyond the first line

to win those points.

The rules are in place, the stage is set,

and it's Esther and Daisy to go first.

They were serious contenders from the moment they arrived

at The Dog House

and Daisy was the first dog to drop the ball into the bowl.

If they remain consistent,

that place in the quarter-finals will be theirs.

Your time starts now.

Esther's being bold. She wants those bonus points

but she'll only get them if Daisy drops the ball in the cup.

20 points! Nice one. Well done, you two. Great start.

Oh, no. Not enough power there from Daisy,

and it hit the catapult.

And now Daisy's forgotten what to do.

Despite fantastic encouragement from Esther,

Daisy seems to want to put the ball anywhere but in that cup.

Finally the ball is loaded. That's 20 more points,

but now Daisy's looking at, well, the daisies.

Come on, you're running out of time!

Daisy! Jump!

Yes, a big ten-pointer!

But the clock's against you.

Daisy! What's this? Daisy!

And there's the buzzer.

Esther does look disappointed. Have they scored enough points?

Todd has been easily distracted during his time at the Dog House

and Daniel has found it hard to teach him

how to drop the ball in the cup.

These two are definitely underdogs in the competition,

and if they don't do it now, they never will.

Your time starts now.

Remember - the further that ball flies,

the more points they'll receive,

but it's a disastrous start.

Not enough power!

And now it looks like Todd's forgotten all his training.

Leave it! Leave it!

Todd, turn around!

Round!

Good boy, Toddy! Toddy, come!

Now they've got the hang of it, the points keep coming.

But Daniel's decided against getting Todd to load the ball

into the catapult.

They won't score any bonuses so they'll have to be super-quick.

Final ten seconds.

Can they can get just one more?

Turn it round! Turn it round!

Oh, just out of time!

From the start, Magic has seemed more interested in chewing

the balls than loading them into the catapult,

and Isobel's admitted that Magic

simply doesn't understand what to do.

If they're to have any chance in the competition,

they'll have to seriously up their game.

And they're off - and Magic knows just what to do!

But Isobel's forgotten to load the catapult.

A second attempt - but it's a misfire.

Come on, team. Get it together!

Magic's flying. Surely this time.

Yes, they've done it.

Good boy!

That's 20 points in the bag and now they're really motoring.

Good boy!

Good boy!

But not for long. After another ten pointer, disaster strikes.

Misfire... after misfire...

After misfire.

And the clock is against them.

Another 20 pointer, but is it too little, too late?

Isobel, I think you worked harder than Magic.

Excellent job! Really good work!

What an intense competition that was, guys.

You all did fantastic.

But I can now reveal...

..that we actually have a tie.

Esther and Daisy scored an admirable 55 points,

but with 70 points apiece, Daniel and Todd will now go head to head

against Isobel and Magic in the tie-break.

Isobel and Daniel, we are going to have a one-minute tie-breaking round.

Esther and Daisy, I want to congratulate you.

You guys were the only ones who were able to pull off

the most challenging part of this trick.

That takes a lot of skill and you are a very talented dog trainer.

I like you guys a lot.

A strong start for Isobel and Magic.

This looks like an easy 20-pointer.

But no - Magic's dropped the ball before crossing the line.

And when he does it again, Isobel has to change tactics.

By standing further back, she encourages Magic to keep

hold of the ball and it works!

Isobel and Magic did a fantastic job as well.

Unfortunately Magic dropping that ball just short of the catapult,

and even though it rolled past, they have to bring it all the way

back behind the catapult.

That was an extremely intense performance. Guys, really good work.
