Audi, lying about safety standards. Sports Direct with discounts you

shouldn't believe. Sky Broadband punishing you for not having their

products. Plus, the B paint that left this woman allergic to her own

sitting-room. We are back, it's Watchdog.

Good evening and welcome to Watchdog. We are live for the next

60 minutes. Tonight... Audi. They say they push the boundaries of

safety, but these models, are they tested to the highest standard? No,

they are not. I find that absolutely incredible, that a company of the

reputation of Audi and their parent group can allow their product to be

misrepresented so badly in that way. Also, Sports Direct. Are its

fantastic discounts as good as they seem? And new Sky Broadband

customers being charged for services they don't receive. And the B,

Homebase and Crown paints causing a chemical that is causing severe skin

reactions. Imagine returning from holiday to find that the company you

pay to look after your car had lost it. Yes, you would be livid, but

that's the kind of service you could receive from tonight's rogues. Gold

Parking Ltd. When we gave them our car, they promised it would be in a

secure compound. So why did it end up here on an industrial estate in

Crawley? And how come I was able to sneak up to with in the middle of

the night and remove the wheel trims without anyone noticing? Trying to

stay like Al Pacino in the Godfather. When he just walks out of

the restaurant. Walk with me whilst we experienced the least secure

secure car parking firm you will ever see. Wright Audi, famous for

those German ads and the promise that they are always looking for new

ways to protect you and your passengers. Which is why more than 1

million motorists in the UK alone, including me, have an Audi. So if

they take safety so seriously, why have some of the most expensive

Audis had the least stringent testing? Vorsprung durch Technik,

say the ads. Progress through technology. And Audi say they pride

themselves on using that technology to ensure the people travelling in

their cars are in safe hands. Their safety record is one of the things

that attracted Daniel Jenkins to the brand. Interested in buying an Audi

R8 for his spot -- his sports car rental business, his local dealer

assured him it was safety tested to the highest standards. One of the

main reasons for me buying the Audi R8 over its competitors was the fact

Audi advised to me it had a Euro NCAP rating of five stars. Wright

the Euro NCAP is the gold standard of motor safety testing, the most

stringent test industry. If your car has passed it, you know it is

considered as safe as can possibly be. Whilst all cars on the road do

have to go through mandatory EU testing, these requirements are much

lower than the voluntary Euro NCAP tests. Popular models are either

automatically selected for testing by the organisation themselves, or

alternatively manufacturers can pay to have individual models put

through their paces. Save in the knowledge his new R8 had passed the

test, Daniel didn't give it another moment's thought. Until it became

clear his Audi dealer had lied to him. A few months after the

purchase, Daniel's father was driving the car when he crashed. And

although all the on-board safety features did their job, it prompted

Daniel to research the kind of testing Euro NCAP had put the R8

through. I visited their website I became aware that the Audi R8 had

never been put to any programme with Euro NCAP. To find out that it

wasn't after being advised it had been, I was extremely upset and

disappointed. To find out if this was a one-off mistake from a

misinformed salesman, Daniel called 50 other Audi dealerships to find

out if anyone else would make the same false claim about the safety

testing of the R8. He couldn't believe what he heard. 48 of them

told me directly that it had been put through the Euro NCAP programme,

that it had been crushed tested and had a 5-star rating. -- crash

tested. I was gobsmacked. But can this really be true? Can a major car

manufacturer like Audi be systematically lying about the

safety testing of some of their vehicles? Well, we've decided to

find out for ourselves by visiting ten Audi showrooms around the

country. Other Audi's 12 models, we know four haven't been tested. The

R8, that Daniel owned, along with the 87, a eight and the A5. Posing

as potential customers, we asked sales staff about the testing the A5

had been put through. Can you tell me about the safety standards on

them as well? In total, eight out of ten showroom

staff lied to us, saying the A5 was Euro NCAP rated. Not only that, but

six of those told us it had scored five stars, the best possible rating

you can get. So what does Britain's biggest car safety charity make of

our findings? I find that absolutely incredible, that a company of the

reputation of Audi and their parent group, the Volkswagen group

overall, can allow their product to be misrepresented so badly in that

way. Nobody is saying the cars aren't safe, but if they haven't

been tested, they haven't been tested. To say they have, it's

outrageous. So what is going on? Perhaps we got the answer in this

dealership. In other words, they can claim the

A5 is Euro NCAP tested because an entirely different car, the A4, has

passed the test. It doesn't hold water at all. The A4 is the A4, they

can't use that safety rating for the A5, it's a different car. If they

want to say the A5 has got safety stars, get it tested. This is

normally the point where we would inform Audi that we've caught their

salespeople lying to customers. But this is where the story gets even

more shocking, because we have evidence that Audi have known about

this for at least five months. After his own investigation, Daniel wrote

to Audi head office with his findings. They wrote back

acknowledging his accusation about Audi stuff lying and promised to

investigate. So why are we still being lied to? Perhaps it is time to

call head office ourselves. Surely they know the truth about which of

their cars are endcap tested. -- Euro MCAT tested.

Which, yet again, is a lie. Not from possibly misguided sales staff but

from Audi head office themselves. A lie they repeated two out of three

times we called. So now we are left with just one very simple question.

Why are Audi lying about the safety testing of their cars?

Let's find out first what Euro NCAP think about this. They had no idea.

But they were concerned and keen to talk to us about it, so I jumped on

the Eurostar to their HQ in Brussels to meet the man who manages their

safety testing programme. This is what he had to say. And disappointed

that the correct information is not being passed on to consumers. Most

of the car companies we deal with have large marketing departments,

these departments understand full well what the safety ratings mean.

It's disappointing to find out that that information is not being

filtered down to the point where it matters most, where people are

selling cars to customers. Does having an Euro NCAP rating helps

sell more cars? Guess. There's a lot of evidence that shows that one

difference in star rating makes a big difference in sales. What will

you be doing to prevent algae from misusing your ratings in future?

There's very little we can do. We're not a regulatory body, we have no

legislative powers. We can't force Audi to do anything. What we can do

is speak to them at a high level and try to encourage them to make sure

that dealers are better informed and trained. So Euro NCAP are powerless

to stop manufacturers like Audi claiming their cars have passed

tests they haven't taken. Audi UK say there was no deliberate intent

to mislead customers, but they accept watchdog has uncovered a

shortfall in their communication procedures on safety testing. They

admit they didn't fully investigate Daniel Jenkins' complaint and

apologise unreservedly. Audi say all their cars exceed international

safety standards and point out six of their models do have 5-star

ratings from Euro NCAP. But four don't. You'll a-macro exactly. They

add, they see no problems with the safety features of Daniel's R8, but

have begun a review to ensure the future accuracy of information they

provide to customers. Audi invite anyone concerned to call their

customer services from 8am tomorrow. OK, if you want to comment on that

This woman was rushed to hospital after decorating her sitting room.

The cause? The B paint. On Rogue Traders we are all big

music fans. Don't make a mistake, though, our main focus is on rights

and wrongs and showing you who done it. But if we are given the

opportunity to stick some song lyrics into our show, we jumped at

the chance. It's Van Halen. It could be the point assist is. Imagine the

buzz in the office when we were presented with a company called...

You will work it out. But your car is not indestructible.

It can be mistreated, parked in odd places. And to cut a long story

short, that is exactly what's happening and worse to some cars

left here by holiday-makers, with an airport parking company.

# So true... Gold Parking Ltd of Crawley say they

run the most secure meet and greet parking company at Gatwick. They

promise a chauffeur will meet you at the airport and drive your car

directly to their compound. The director of the company is this man,

Shaban Malik, this is his brother. Impressed with their website, Brenda

Jean Jones and her husband, David, used them to look after her Audi

whilst they were away on honeymoon in Cuba. It said that the car would

only be driven a few minutes from Gatwick Airport and parked securely

in their compound. But when their car was returned they discovered

that their performance was less than sparkling. It was pretty dirty,

there was a rip in the tyre, David just wanted to get in the car and

drive home. But after awhile he said, look, there are 1500 miles on

the clock. They've done over 1000 miles, Brenda. So it had been driven

a substantial number of miles while you were on holiday. Guess. Anything

else? One morning we had a parking fine come through the post. It said

the vehicle was parked near a row residents block without a permit.

Within two weeks of the first parking fine we had the next one. So

the car clearly hadn't been parked in the secure compound promised.

Brenda made several complaints but Gold Parking ignored them all.

Damage, parking tickets and hundreds of miles on the clock. What on earth

would Tony Hadley say? It is totally unacceptable. When you leave your

car with a parking company, you expected to be returned in exactly

the same condition you took it there. Plus delivery mileage, of

course. These people have taken liberties with the vehicle and its

owner. The Cuban vacation has aroused my indignation. Thank you,

Tony. But there are worse fates that can befall your vehicle. Dipesh left

his Mercedes with Gold Parking whilst it was in the Caribbean with

his wife. Though they returned from their holiday, their car didn't

return from its stay with Gold Parking. They took us back to their

premises and said they thought one of their members of staff had stolen

the vehicle. We said, how could you let this happen? What you would hope

would happen next is they tell you how they are going to reimburse you

or replace the car in some way with their insurance. When we looked at

their insurance details, in there it says that theft is not covered. We

were shocked. Punctures, chips to the windscreen, damage to the wheels

and interior, theft of personal property. They refused to take

responsibility for all manner of things that could happen to your car

whilst it's in their care. Meaning that when police couldn't find the

Mercedes or the alleged thief, he had to use his own insurance to

replace it. Something is going on. We need to find out. And that means

park ago car, but it has to be a car be fitting someone of my stature. A

heritage brand with phenomenal build quality like a Mercedes. A CLA. We

are going to need a high roller to drive this motor and that's why one

of our researchers dug out his dad's shirt and done his hair differently.

Grant pays ?80 and heads to Gatwick but this is no berk with a Merc, he

comes rigged with secret cameras. Hi. Are you here for Gold? Yes. This

is the Director of Gold who goes on to give our car a quick once over.

She is brand-new. So look after her. LAUGHTER

Going anywhere nice? We are off to Jamaica. There is nothing to sign.

No paperwork at all. That's all done. Awesome. Shall I leave the

keys with you? Yes. We are expecting our vehicle to end up in a secure

compound monitored 24/7. Make sure it is a secure car park. It is all

parked securely and that? Yes. Fantastic. Thanks then.

Well, I found that utterly convincing, I'm reassured. Anyway,

our man is off to Jafakia! So why where is his real car? Well, we have

hidden a tracker inside. As soon as it leaves us, the car heads towards

Crawley which is the location of the secure compound, where it goes, we

shall follow! But what will our man do with our

Merc while we are away on our fick tis holiday.

In March a report by Ofgem concluded that rising profits and consistent

increases in energy bills from the big six providers had damaged public

trust. You can say that again. As a result, Ofgem passed the buck and

has called for a new organisation, the competition and markets

authority to investigate. Remember, Ofgem have supposedly been

regulating the industry for the last 15 years. Anyway, this latest report

could take up to 18 months, what happens to your energy bills between

now and then, we do not know. We've asked Ofgem to come on Watchdog to

explain. It is considering our offer. We'll let you know more when

it is decided next week! Yes, a lot else happened since we

saw you last. Here is more updates. In January, four months after we

featured them, Cash4phones.co.uk filed for insolvency. The site

offered money in exchange for old handsets, the price it paid out was

far less than originally quoted online. Hundreds complained and when

we tried it for ourselves, exactly the same thing happened. Blaming

excessive wear and tear, Cash4phones dropped the price of our iPhone 4

from ?105 to ?42 even though four experts clunded it was in excellent

before we sent it. The Liquid daters told us that anyone owed money is

likely to get it back. We will keep you posted.

Roaming charges for using your phone whilst travelling in Europe are due

to be scrapped next year. Our report highlighted the extreme prices

consumers have to pay to use their mobiles abroad. One viewer wracked

up a bill of ?2,000 after a three day trip to Ireland!

European Parliament disagreed about the charges. Under reforms announced

last month, the cost of making a call or downloading data will be the

same in an EU country as it is at home. The ching is due to -- change

is due to take effect from 2015, meaning I will be able to download

the Greatest Hits of Spandau Ballet wherever I like!

Success in our campaign to see MI removed from cosmetic products.

We reported on the growing number of people suffering severe allergic

reactions to a variety of wipes. Creams and lotions. Following our

invesitgations Johnson and Johnson, Vaseline, Nivea and all these others

pledged to remove the MI from what they call their leave on skin

products. But others like L'Oreal and Dove said they would keep using

the preservative for as long as it was legal to do so. Now Cosmetic

Europe said the use of MI should stop.

This preservative MI isn't just in cosmetics. There is another industry

using it. I have come to meet Karen Johnson, though she looks healthy

today, this is what she looked like last August. She had no idea of the

cause. I woke up one morning with a rash on the lower part of my face

and upper part of my chest. Which progressively got worse over a

period of ten days. I couldn't breathe one night. My lips were

swollen. My eyes could barely open so much so that my daughters phoned

an ambulance and I ended up in A That must have been really scary? It

was scary because you don't realise what's going on and you don't

understand why. I couldn't think of what was happening to me.

Though Karen was allowed to return home later that night, her symptoms

persisted. Her dermatologist carried out a series of tests and concluded

she had experience add severe allergic reaction to MI, but unlike

other cases we've seen before, this time, her reaction wasn't triggered

by cosmetics. The only thing I did any different

was I was painting my front room and the symptoms started about two days

after I started painting. Her dermatologist suspected that the

MI might be included in the paint she was using Matt emulsion from B

and G's Value Range. When Karen e-mailed B to check, they

confirmed MI is an ingredient of that range of paint. Just like in

cosmetics, it is used as a preservative to stop the product

going off. And that meant Karen wasn't just

reacting whilst she was painting, she continued to do so even after

she had finished decorating, as the paint dried.

I was quite upset because you go and you buy something that you think is

an emulsion paint. All I wanted to do was freshen up a room and I've

ended up suffering because of this nasty chemical.

Now, she has been diagnosed as one of the rapidly increasing number of

people with an MI allergy, it should be easy for Karen to aid void other

paints to That contain it. She needs to check the tin, right? Wrong.

These are the tins of paint which her dermatologist thinks triggered

Karen's allergy and you will find no mention of MI or any other

ingredients on the tIns. Why? Because whilst the law states that

cosmetic products must declare all of their ingredients, there are no

such rules in the paint industry. Only specific chemicals must be

named and in the case of MI, that only applies when it is at levels of

1,000 parts per million. According to Dr White it would never be used

at that level in paint as a milder concentration would be effective as

a sprervetive. -- preservative. He says smaller

levels could cause an allergic reaction. The absence of labelling

is detrimental to consumer safety and health protection because

without full ingredients labelling, it is impossible for the sensitive

individual to avoid expositionures. -- exposures. How widespread is the

use of MI in household paint? To find out, Dr White and his

colleagues picked paints at random from seven of the biggest selling

ranges in Britain. Wicks, Homebase, Fired Earth, B, Crown, Laura

Ashley and due lucks. -- Dulux. Each were sent to have

their ingredients analysed at a university in Denmark. The results

are in. For the first time we can reveal that at least half a dozen

popular paint brands available up and down the UK do contain MI.

Even though none of them make this clear on the packaging. All the

samples that were tested contain levels of MI that Dr White says

could cause problems. Apart from the four Dulux paints and one of Laura

Ashley's two paints. There are variation in the concentrations

available. Many of them contained MI at levels which are of concern and I

would have the -- and would have the potential to be harmful to the

individual who has allergy to MI. As many as one in ten people tested

for MI are allergic. But could it simply be that paint manufacturers

aren't aware of the potential risks? Well, seemingly not.

We rang each of the companies posing as customers with an MI allergy and

asked if it was safe to use the paints we've tested and every single

one of them told us that we should avoid using their products. So if

these companies know that their products contain MI, why on earth

are they not putting it on the tin? There is no reason why the presence

of MI in noncosmetic products including paints should not be

identified on the ingredient label. It may not be required in European

legislation, but that doesn't stop the individual industries, the

individual companies from labelling their products. European law is due

to change in 2015 and any paint with MI at more than 100 parts her

million will have to name it, but Dr White says concentration levels

below that could cause a reaction. So to really solve the problem, why

don't the paint companies do the right thing and follow the lead of

the cosmetics industry by stopping using MI altogether? There are

perfectly acceptable alternatives to MI and a responsible industry should

at this stage bearing in mind that so many people are now allergic to

MI, start removing it completely from their products and moving on to

something with a better safety profile.

All the companies featured say they put the safety of customers first

and will comply with current and future guidelines. Wicks told us

they will be introducing clearer labelling Onazi their points as have

-- on their paints as have Crown and Fired Earth and BA q says -- B

were sorry and have introduced clearer labelling. It says since Mrs

Johnston didn't know about her allergy labelling wouldn't have

helped her. These trousers are on offer for up

to 70% off the original price of ?29.99. That means they will cost

you? Indeed. Are Sports Direct hoping you can't work it out?

Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet is fewer bus gold park -- furious Gold

Parking has taken the name of one of his biggest hits and turned it into

a company. Customers have seen their cars damaged and stolen whilst safe

in their care. It is time to check out what they mean by the words

parked in a secure compound. As soon as the tracker we've hidden inside

tells us the car has been parked, we will head off to investigate. Of

course, we may have to look at our vehicles through the chain link

fence topped with razor wire, and we may face difficult and searching

questions from the burly, shiny headed security guards to patrol the

compound around the clock. But, then again, we might not because our

Tracker reveals Gold Parking have left our car here, and a publicly

accessible residential street in Crawley, near to the boss' house.

It's hardly be secure car park we were promised. And this is where our

car stays all week. My institution is telling me that there's something

really badly wrong here. The word is instinct.

After a week pretending to be in Jamaica, it's time for the

researcher to get the car back. Remember, he said he was hoping to

get some sun? Well, we are nothing if not thorough! Grant and his

matching friend head back to Gatwick where they are met by Malik. He

throws a bit of a curveball. Grant hasn't really been on holiday

and has been using a fake name, so he hasn't got one. Think of a good

excuse! I taught him everything he knows. It

does the trick. Riz hands over the keys and then it's our turn to put

him on the spot. Tell them your friend saw your car on the street.

It's true. One car, one big bag of gold and lies. But let's just play

devils advocate. Maybe this was a one-off because they're secure

compound was full. To sure, we need to park another EHIC you'll marvel.

This Ford Fiesta. We blew the budget on the Mercedes. Note the hubcaps,

they are important. Gold tells new stooge, Mark, to drive to the South

terminal where he is met by the operations manager, rinse. -- Riz.

Again, there is no paperwork, which is surprisingly given how important

he felt it was last time. But he does check to see what state the car

is in before he drives it away. So where is this car going to end up?

Now, you might hope that our little Ford Fiesta was securely parked, but

we can see, because we are tracking it, that it's not. It's actually on

a main road right now. And, of course, on a main road, anything

could happen to it. Time for a spot of late-night mischief. We think the

car is parked directly outside Gold Parking's office and, as the lights

are on, we need to use super stealth tactics. Shall I go for it now? OK.

First one... And then another of the hubcaps off. And we stroll off

nonchalantly. Trying to stay like Al Pacino in the Godfather. You know

when he just walks out of the restaurant. Not one but two wheel

trims, not strictly speaking hubcaps, but the point is made. We

could have done almost anything to those cars where they were parked by

the main road. The question is, what will they do when our chap returns

and finds that two out of his available four wheel trims are

missing. Explanation time. Our man, Mark, is about to get the hump over

his hubcaps. Malik is the one dropping the car off this time.

I'm just wondering how it has happened.

We know that's not true. Look at the other car, the whole thing was

stolen. Mark is given a number to ring and complain. When he does,

he's told that Gold Parking have checked the imaginary CCTV from

their imaginary compound. That is alive. So the big question, what

would Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet... Tony has had to leave.

But don't worry, there's no doubt he's probably on tour across the UK

this summer. We need answers to this airport parking malarkey. Make sure

you've reserved space, because we'll be taking off in about ten minutes.

Let's give you an update on some of the e-mails and texts. We've had a

huge response to our Audi story. Lots of people are checking if their

car has been Euro NCAP tested. We know that because the website has

crashed. So keep sending in your e-mails, texts and tweets, and

hopefully we'll respond to all of them. We know a broadband customer

who recently became a Sky Broadband customer. Listen up, will Riz is

here to tell us what Sky is up to. Suppose you buy your lunch from a

supermarket, you get a meal Deal discount if you buy a combination of

a sand wedge, a drink and a bag of crisps. But now imagine you just buy

the sum which and get charged extra for not taking the crisps and the

drink. And that's what happened to these new Sky Broadband customers,

because last year Sky brought the home phone and broadband business of

O2 and a smaller company called BE Broadband, creating half a million

new customers overnight. But when the first itemised bills from Sky

arrived, some of these new customers noticed they were being charged for

services which they didn't have. Exactly. This is Dave Parsons from

Bromley in Kent. And this is the bill he received, with a host of

extra charges for things he hadn't signed up for. As you can see, he's

been charged supplements for not having Sky Talk or Sky TV. Sky are

charging people for not subscribing to its subscription service. That's

what it sounds like. We've heard from dozens more Sky Broadband

customers, just some of whom you can see on your screen now. Sky's

response, it says the vast majority of customers are still paying the

same or less than they did with O2 Broadband or BE Broadband, and that

anyone with Sky Broadband on its own without its subscription services is

not being financially penalised. Instead, they are simply not getting

the discounts they would if they had multiple product. That makes no

sense to me. Why is it called a supplement on the bill, Sky won't

say. But it has contacted Dave Parsons to explain how his bill is

calculate it, and will be very happy to do the same for any other

customers needing clarification, which could be quite a few. Please

pester and annoy Sky's customer services department and let us know

how you get on. Next, time for a bit of a kick about. With the World Cup

just four weeks away, the whole world is going football crazy, which

means it's likely to be boomtime for Sports Direct, the UK's largest

sporting retailer, and its owner, Mike Ashley, Britain's 23rd richest

person. But beware, some of their offers aren't necessarily what they

seem. Whether its trainers, tennis rackets or tracksuit bottoms you are

after, Sports Direct has them all. With around 400 branches nationwide,

more people shop with them than any other sports store. And best of all,

there are almost always special deals on offer with discounts

galore. What's not to like? Quite a lot, as it happens, because as

customer Kris Allen discovered, the discounts on offer don't always add

up. On each and every item I noticed in the store, there were

multicoloured banners which were bearing levels of discount. On

closer examination, you could see there was a very small up to in the

corner of each of the price tickets. I noticed on a quick calculation

that the amounts of discount weren't adding up. Where it said 70% there

was a much less discount on the item of just over 50%. Win over 40 years

working as a trading standards officer, Chris never saw a sale

promoting discounts in this way. The benefit to Sports Direct in this is

they are using what, in my view, are misleading price indications to draw

consumers into the shop. Saw just how widespread is this practice? We

decided to investigate, starting with the Sports Direct website.

Men's tracksuit bottoms, ?24.99. It says it's reduced up to 80%. But

when you look at the price it is ?9.99. That's only a reduction of

60%. And this, the children's tracksuit bottoms used to be

?21.99, again reduced by up to 80%. But take a look at the price and its

?17.99. That's a reduction of just 18%, not 80. Of over 1400 sale items

we looked at online, more than half failed to meet the up to discount

that Sports Direct advertised. So is it the same inside the stores? Our

secret shoppers visited ten different stores around the UK and

picked out ten different items offering up to 30%, 70% or 80% off.

They then worked out how much money off you are actually getting. In our

first store in England we found these trousers advertised as having

up to 70% off. But it isn't hard to work out its really only a 50%

discount. In Scotland, this ladies swimming costume is advertised as

having up to 30% of, when actually you only get a reduction of just

under 20. In Northern Ireland it was the same story. This foodie

advertised as up to 70% off. The real discount was 57%. Of the 100

items we picked up in ten different stores, hardly any met the up to

discount offered. Surely this is misleading. Consumer marketing

Professor Vince Mitchell agrees. The current legislation prohibits

retailers from giving any misleading information. Price information needs

to be valid and accurate. It would appear that these claims do breach

those guidelines. So Sports Direct are potentially breaching

regulations online and in shops all over the country. What are their

staff saying about what they are doing? The recommended retailers

?15.99, so it's nearly 30%. So are Sports Direct attempting to

get away with something or is this just a series of mistakes with their

calculations? Because there is one up to offer they don't get wrong

very often. And that's when items are all sale at up to 50% off. Of

the 100 such offers we checked, 80 of them met or exceeded half price.

Yet only three out of 100 met or exceeded the claims on the other,

less simple discounts. So why use one discount usually correct and the

others not? It couldn't be because 50% off is the easiest discount for
