unusual and frightening attack by a young mother in Manchester. -- on a | :00:17. | :00:27.
:00:27. | :00:44. | ||
are live and on air every week day morning tackling everyday crimes. We | :00:44. | :00:47.
need your help to track down the criminals whose actions affect us | :00:47. | :00:53.
all. On the programme today. A terrifying ordeal for a young | :00:53. | :00:59.
mother, dragged into a car and assaulted. | :00:59. | :01:03.
A night out in the city, how Manchester police keep the streets | :01:03. | :01:10.
safe on a Saturday night. And the big-time metal thieves | :01:10. | :01:14.
targeted in a massive police operation. | :01:14. | :01:18.
The roadshow team is travelling the country and today is our last day | :01:18. | :01:26.
with Greater Manchester police. Xiang, good morning, where are you? | :01:26. | :01:29.
I am in St Ann's Square in the heart of Manchester City centre, and today | :01:29. | :01:37.
we are going to be finding out how this city is policed by day and by | :01:37. | :01:39.
night. And how the officers here tackle shoplifting and bike crime. | :01:39. | :01:45.
That sounds good. We are looking for the men who assaulted a young | :01:45. | :01:49.
mother. Lisa from East Manchester was left so traumatised by what | :01:49. | :01:53.
happened that we have changed her real name to protect her identity. | :01:53. | :01:59.
It was pure fright. It was nothing I had never experienced before. It was | :01:59. | :02:05.
really terrifying. She had been targeted by the individuals in this | :02:05. | :02:14.
vehicle. There would appear to be a sexual motive behind it. I started | :02:14. | :02:17.
to cry a lot and I tried to scream a lot more, I thought this was my last | :02:17. | :02:23.
chance to get away. Saturday the 9th of March, Lisa and her partner had | :02:23. | :02:28.
been enjoying a quiet night out in Manchester. We went to meet a few | :02:28. | :02:33.
friends, we had a baby-sitter, we went out and had a couple of drinks. | :02:33. | :02:39.
Lisa did not feel 100% soap around ten o'clock, the couple headed home | :02:39. | :02:47.
via the local takeaway. -- so around ten o'clock. We went inside the | :02:47. | :02:51.
takeaway and ordered some food. It said it would take about ten minutes | :02:51. | :02:55.
because they didn't have what we ordered ready. My partner said he | :02:55. | :03:01.
needed the toilet. As they live just around the corner, he popped home | :03:01. | :03:07.
and said he would return before the food was ready. A couple of minutes | :03:07. | :03:13.
after my partner left, the food was ready. So I just decided to come out | :03:13. | :03:19.
of the takeaway and, home. It has always been fine, it is a really | :03:19. | :03:24.
nice area, never any trouble, you never hear of anything. Lisa began | :03:24. | :03:34.
:03:34. | :03:38. | ||
walking home alone. I began to walk down towards my house. I noticed a | :03:38. | :03:43.
black VW Golf pull up. I didn't think anything of it at the time. I | :03:43. | :03:50.
only noticed it when it started to reverse the way I was walking. | :03:50. | :03:55.
now, Lisa was starting to feel a little uneasy. She did not know the | :03:55. | :04:01.
car or the people in it. I walked maybe ten or 15 steps and it | :04:01. | :04:07.
followed me really slowly all the way back. Where are you headed, do | :04:07. | :04:13.
you want a lift? No thank you. I picked up my pace and that is when I | :04:13. | :04:19.
heard the car door and footsteps behind me. What happened next turned | :04:19. | :04:25.
Lisa's life completely upside down. One of the men tried to grab her. | :04:25. | :04:30.
The next thing I remember, his arm coming around my shoulder. I just | :04:30. | :04:39.
froze. And then he tried to put his hand down my top. Which he did. I | :04:39. | :04:44.
had a lot of cuts and bruises. bravely fought back but men were not | :04:44. | :04:53.
giving up easily. The first man proceeded to drag me into the car. | :04:53. | :05:00.
With the second man trying to pull me inside it. I started shouting for | :05:00. | :05:10.
my partner, anybody, dad, allsorts. Shut up! That is when the second man | :05:10. | :05:17.
let go of my arms and said, leave it, it is not worth it. I was still | :05:17. | :05:21.
screaming. I was screaming and crying. I rang my partner | :05:21. | :05:28.
straightaway. He couldn't understand a word I was saying. It was awful. I | :05:28. | :05:35.
couldn't register. My partner said straightaway, ring the police. I was | :05:35. | :05:40.
just sat down against a wall on the pavement, I couldn't stop shaking. I | :05:40. | :05:49.
felt dirty. It really did make me feel awful, unclean. But her bravery | :05:49. | :05:53.
has been praised by police. This was a very serious incident which could | :05:53. | :05:58.
have resulted in farm or serious consequences. It was only due to the | :05:58. | :06:04.
courage of the victim -- far more serious consequences. And the fact | :06:04. | :06:09.
that she fought away, she got -- fought back, she got away. The | :06:09. | :06:16.
vehicle was a black Volkswagen golf but it was a matte black colour | :06:16. | :06:20.
rather than shiny. It had alloy wheels and the side windows were | :06:20. | :06:24.
tinted. It had a luminous green Volkswagen badge on the bonnet and | :06:24. | :06:31.
unusually, it had luminous green windscreen wiper trims. People like | :06:31. | :06:34.
that obviously don't have any remorse or anything along those | :06:35. | :06:38.
lines. I really would class myself as lucky. What happens to me was | :06:39. | :06:43.
horrendous. Apart from a few scrapes and bruises and memories, I actually | :06:43. | :06:52.
got away. That relief at escaping the men was short lived. I was about | :06:52. | :06:56.
seven weeks pregnant at the time, six or seven weeks pregnant at the | :06:56. | :07:03.
time. The hospital did not say how, but I would say the strength of the | :07:03. | :07:06.
attack, the way they grabbed me and things like that, I ended up having | :07:06. | :07:13.
a miscarriage. Lisa and her partner are now trying to deal with the loss | :07:13. | :07:19.
of their baby, while the police are trying to find those responsible. | :07:19. | :07:23.
Immolation to offences of this type, they are thankfully very rare. -- in | :07:23. | :07:28.
relation to offences. But this is a very serious offence and we need to | :07:28. | :07:32.
catch the offenders. Why do it to innocent people and then go on to | :07:33. | :07:37.
ruin their lives? It affects every single thing you do. I would not go | :07:37. | :07:41.
to the shop by myself, even in the daylight. My doors are always | :07:41. | :07:45.
locked. I still haven't been on a night out by myself. I am always out | :07:45. | :07:52.
with my partner. This really was a terrifying ordeal and I am joined by | :07:52. | :07:58.
DCI Andy Peach who is investigating this case. Truly horrendous for that | :07:58. | :08:01.
victim to go through something like this. She has been able to provide | :08:01. | :08:04.
you with an awful lot of useful information, particularly about the | :08:04. | :08:11.
offenders. . She has. She has described her first attack as being | :08:11. | :08:18.
a male of Asian appearance, between 24 and 25, about 5'4" tall and of | :08:18. | :08:22.
slim build, although she says he had muscular arms and chest. He had a | :08:22. | :08:28.
full face beard about two or three centimetres in length. His hair was | :08:28. | :08:38.
:08:38. | :08:39. | ||
dark and short, almost shaven. He had a red regatta waterproof jacket | :08:39. | :08:43.
and a pair of maroon trousers. The second individual was also a male of | :08:43. | :08:47.
Asian appearance, about 25, considerably taller. He was of | :08:47. | :08:52.
medium build and he had short gelled spiky hair. In relation to facial | :08:52. | :09:02.
:09:02. | :09:03. | ||
hair, he had a small line from the bottom of his mouth to his chin. He | :09:03. | :09:06.
was wearing light-coloured chino trousers. He had a purple hooded top | :09:06. | :09:10.
with a white zip and white drawstrings. The driver was a white | :09:10. | :09:19.
male. He had a distinctive big wrist watch. The car was pointed out, a | :09:19. | :09:25.
black goal. It looked different to this one. We think it looked | :09:25. | :09:30.
different. It was matte black, black alloy wheels. The side windows were | :09:30. | :09:36.
tinted. It had a one foot dent on the bonnet. The VW badge on the | :09:36. | :09:40.
bonnet was in luminous neon green. The windscreen wipers were also | :09:40. | :09:46.
luminous green. Show us what was hanging in the rear window. This | :09:46. | :09:52.
jellybean air freshener in the rear window. If anybody recognises, | :09:52. | :09:58.
please get in touch. It is time to look at today's first | :09:58. | :10:04.
set of criminals caught on camera. Early morning on the 20th of | :10:04. | :10:11.
November and a dark ray Audi is lurking in the area. -- dark grey. | :10:11. | :10:15.
The police believe the occupants are casing the joint. After a while, | :10:15. | :10:20.
these early birds are ready for a spot of work. They smashed their way | :10:20. | :10:24.
into a house in chase down, Staffordshire, while the owner is | :10:24. | :10:31.
still in bed. Within just three minutes, they are out. These | :10:31. | :10:41.
:10:41. | :10:44. | ||
shameless thieves make off with their rifles and ten grands worth of | :10:44. | :10:46.
jewellery. If you have any information about these chancers or | :10:46. | :10:53.
their car, pick up that phone. An office block in Holborn, but this | :10:53. | :10:59.
life the -- this slide thief is not here to work. He spots a couple of | :10:59. | :11:03.
laptops in the reception area and gets a closer look. He is about to | :11:03. | :11:11.
make his move but he is disturbed by a man leaving the building. Our | :11:11. | :11:14.
quickwitted thief pretends to be on the phone until the coast is clear. | :11:14. | :11:19.
Then he goes actively laptops and takes his chance. Picking them up | :11:19. | :11:29.
:11:29. | :11:38. | ||
and making a sharp exit. Do you the bus to tooting. This man is | :11:38. | :11:44.
standing next to a pram. Watch as he leans in and has a good rummage | :11:44. | :11:50.
around. It is child's play. He finds a purse and puts it in his back | :11:50. | :11:54.
pocket. He gets away with the purse containing cash, a driving licence | :11:54. | :11:59.
and other documents. Easy as stealing candy from a baby. Do you | :11:59. | :12:06.
know this dummy? Charming fellow! If you recognise | :12:06. | :12:16.
:12:16. | :12:32. | ||
him or any of the others, get is pretty common to hear about bikes | :12:32. | :12:39.
being stolen. Earlier, just down the road from here, there were two | :12:39. | :12:44.
unbelievable thefts that took place at the train station. It is January | :12:44. | :12:48.
this year at Manchester Piccadilly station. This man is dropping a | :12:48. | :12:53.
friend off. But he leaves his engine running as he says good eye. He | :12:53. | :12:56.
gives his mate a helping hand with his bags and he shut the boot. The | :12:56. | :13:03.
calculating thief seizes his opportunity. He jumps in the car and | :13:03. | :13:06.
drives off with the victim still hanging on. Even the barrier doesn't | :13:06. | :13:13.
stop him. Three months later, a similar crime at the same train | :13:13. | :13:18.
station. Again, someone is dropping off a friend and they leave the keys | :13:18. | :13:24.
in the ignition. Watch the top right-hand corner now, as a thief | :13:24. | :13:31.
runs towards the car and jumps in. Driving off in the stolen vehicle. I | :13:31. | :13:36.
am joined by DS Steve May from British transport police. These were | :13:36. | :13:42.
audacious, barefaced crimes. Absolutely astonishing. Yes, very | :13:42. | :13:48.
cheeky crimes. But had potentially quite dire consequences. On both | :13:48. | :13:52.
occasions, the owners of the vehicle tried to intervene. In the first | :13:52. | :13:56.
one, the owner tried to grab hold of the car door and it was given off, | :13:56. | :14:04.
injuring his hand. In the second one, the owner tried to get to the | :14:05. | :14:07.
front of the car but was threatened by the suspect that he could be | :14:07. | :14:11.
driven over if he did not get out of the way. Both vehicles were | :14:11. | :14:14.
subsequently seen driving around and recovered in the Salford area of | :14:14. | :14:20.
Manchester. In the Salford occasion it was about nine days later. | :14:20. | :14:26.
leads do you have? The description of the offender is similar, a white | :14:26. | :14:36.
:14:36. | :14:39. | ||
man, probably late 20s or early 30s. His height is difficult to estimate | :14:39. | :14:42.
but he is supposed to have sharp features, bald with a shaven head. | :14:42. | :14:45.
What would your advice be to anyone who was dropping off in a busy place | :14:45. | :14:55.
:14:55. | :15:00. | ||
like a train station or airport? And take the keys out and hopefully we | :15:00. | :15:05.
will prevent more of this happening. Good advice. | :15:05. | :15:09.
Now let's have a look at a few of the Wanted Faces we have featured | :15:09. | :15:12.
this week. We have had some great calls, but still need your help to | :15:12. | :15:15.
find these men. 29-year-old Alexander James Edward Dooley is up | :15:15. | :15:18.
first. He was due to stand trial at the Old Bailey in April this year, | :15:18. | :15:22.
but failed to turn up. He was accused of setting up a website | :15:22. | :15:24.
advertising bogus car insurance, which conned 70 young drivers into | :15:24. | :15:27.
paying almost 50,000 for worthless policies. Dooley has connections to | :15:27. | :15:35.
Manchester and Birmingham. Next is this man, Flogert Farruku. | :15:35. | :15:37.
Police want to question him in connection with a cannabis factory | :15:37. | :15:39.
in Cardiff, where almost 200,000-worth of plants were | :15:39. | :15:43.
discovered. Farruku is originally from Albania and speaks very little | :15:43. | :15:47.
English. He has links to the Cardiff and Newport areas of South Wales, | :15:47. | :15:50.
but police believe he could be anywhere in the UK. | :15:50. | :15:53.
This man, Andrew Stanley Walker, has been wanted by police in North | :15:53. | :15:57.
Yorkshire since 2005. They want to question him in connection with | :15:57. | :16:02.
allegations of Fraud, carried out using his dead mother's identity. He | :16:02. | :16:05.
is described as being six foot tall and of a generally scruffy | :16:05. | :16:08.
appearance. He has connections to the Harrogate area, but where is he | :16:08. | :16:13.
now? And finally, this is Teddy Simpson. | :16:13. | :16:16.
He is wanted for questioning by detectives in London, in connection | :16:16. | :16:19.
with an attack on two police officers. His hair is now greyer | :16:19. | :16:23.
than in this image, which was taken in 2004. He has a distinctive scar | :16:23. | :16:28.
on his left cheek and is described as dangerous. So if you do see him | :16:28. | :16:31.
or know where he is, do not approach, just ring the police | :16:31. | :16:34.
straightaway. Can you help us catch any of those | :16:34. | :16:38.
men? If so, pick up the phone or send us a e-mail. The details are on | :16:38. | :16:42.
your screen. Sian. Now, metal theft continues to be a | :16:42. | :16:45.
huge problem right across the country. In Manchester, Operation | :16:45. | :16:49.
Alloy was set up to tackle it, and we joined the team recently on their | :16:49. | :16:59.
:16:59. | :17:07. | ||
Today's operation has been in the planning for a year. Its target is | :17:07. | :17:13.
the people behind the big business that is metal theft. | :17:13. | :17:19.
It is 7:30 a.m. And we are about to accompany Greater Manchester Police | :17:19. | :17:23.
on an early morning raid. Illegal metal theft dealers are about to get | :17:23. | :17:30.
a rude awakening! Today, nearly 500 officers, using | :17:30. | :17:32.
over 140 vehicles, are being deployed. | :17:32. | :17:38.
We are on our way to a scrapyard identified as part of this massive | :17:38. | :17:42.
police operation. At the same time, hundreds of officers are on their | :17:42. | :17:45.
way to other locations across the Greater Manchester area. | :17:45. | :17:50.
Not far from the target, the team is brought to a halt. All units | :17:50. | :17:57.
throughout the operation coordinated to swoop at the same time. | :17:57. | :18:03.
Finally, everything is in position, and the green light is given. Some | :18:03. | :18:06.
teams raid private homes and offices. Tracking the money behind | :18:06. | :18:11.
the crime. This team's target is a big scrapyard business and the | :18:11. | :18:16.
people running it. The element of surprise works to the advantage of | :18:16. | :18:21.
the police, and three people are taken into custody. | :18:21. | :18:25.
All three persons have been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen | :18:25. | :18:29.
goods and offences under the scrap metal act. | :18:29. | :18:33.
They have been taken into custody and for questioning, what happens | :18:33. | :18:37.
now? On the ground, we conduct a thorough | :18:37. | :18:41.
and systematic search of the premises, looking for the stolen | :18:41. | :18:46.
goods that may be of interest. While part of this -- while part of | :18:46. | :18:49.
the team get stuck into the paperwork, other officers | :18:49. | :18:55.
investigate the scrap metal. Looking for any markings which might | :18:55. | :19:01.
identify where it has come from. They all have serial numbers, so we | :19:01. | :19:05.
get the experts in to look at that to see if that has come from | :19:05. | :19:11.
somewhere it should not have done. They have used a machine to cut it | :19:11. | :19:17.
and they remove the proper -- the property from inside. | :19:17. | :19:21.
A sophisticated operation, more than people would realise. | :19:21. | :19:25.
When it is stripped in this state, it is difficult to prove where it | :19:25. | :19:27.
has come from. With one cable looking much like | :19:27. | :19:32.
another, police have listed the help of the companies whose cables are | :19:32. | :19:37.
often stolen, to help them identify the goods. | :19:37. | :19:44.
Even though you may not see a label, we are the only cable company in the | :19:44. | :19:47.
north-west using this type of equipment. The cable was pretty much | :19:47. | :19:55.
worthless. Cables are marked in various ways | :19:55. | :19:59.
and Linda, from BT, can spot hers by the paper tax. | :19:59. | :20:05.
You can clearly see that those are the same as those papers. | :20:05. | :20:10.
Unmistakable because no other company would have done it. Prior to | :20:10. | :20:16.
the 1960s, BT only had these. What is your reaction to finding it | :20:16. | :20:22.
here today? Finding stuff! This belongs to | :20:22. | :20:27.
Alex's team? How do you know that? You cannot buy | :20:27. | :20:32.
this cable out on the Open market. The copper in cabling is worth a lot | :20:32. | :20:37.
of money, around 5,000 per tonne, and these do not care where they get | :20:37. | :20:41.
it. There have been instances of hospital operations cancelled | :20:42. | :20:46.
because of copper cabling stolen. Metal taken from the rail network | :20:46. | :20:51.
stops trains from running and communities can lose Internet | :20:51. | :20:53.
connections when telecommunications wiring is ripped out. | :20:53. | :20:59.
We have done a sweep through the site and we have identified stolen | :20:59. | :21:04.
cable which we are now working on the slow process of exhibiting that | :21:04. | :21:12.
so it can be used in evidence. In total, around 14,000 in cash was | :21:12. | :21:16.
seized in 2,500 tonnes of stolen cable was recovered from 28 | :21:16. | :21:21.
premises. 20 arrests were made, another small step forward in the | :21:21. | :21:23.
never ending fight against metal theft. | :21:23. | :21:27.
A great result there. Still to come on today's programme. | :21:27. | :21:36.
Late-night policing, when the booze kicks in, the trouble kicks off. | :21:36. | :21:39.
And the callous thieves who stole a pensioner's pride and joy, his | :21:39. | :21:49.
:21:49. | :21:52. | ||
But first, let's take a look at some sneaky thieves caught on CCTV. | :21:52. | :22:00.
Basildon, March 2011, this woman is doing the weekly shopping, but | :22:00. | :22:06.
little does she know somebody else is shopping for her belongings. The | :22:07. | :22:10.
woman's bag is handing on a hawk on the back of her trolley. Watch this | :22:10. | :22:16.
man as he reaches over and grabbed her handbag. Let's have a look. You | :22:16. | :22:26.
can see it behind his shopping bags. Do you know this man? | :22:26. | :22:33.
March this year, and this couple's out and about browsing in a | :22:33. | :22:37.
jewellers in Garstang. Something has caught this man's I am he means | :22:37. | :22:40.
over-the-counter and graphs to rings, while his accomplice looks | :22:40. | :22:50.
:22:50. | :22:52. | ||
on. -- and graphs. He knows what he wants. Those rings worth 3000. | :22:52. | :22:56.
Now it is time for a swift exit, and when they are out on the street, we | :22:56. | :23:03.
get a better look at faces. Thanks! If you know this barefaced couple, | :23:03. | :23:10.
give us a ring and help us catch these crooks. | :23:10. | :23:16.
Alan, south London, and the laptops in the Cabinet have caught the | :23:16. | :23:26.
:23:26. | :23:32. | ||
attention of these men. -- Balham. After half an hour of loitering, | :23:32. | :23:37.
they grab these laptops and make their way down the street. Maybe you | :23:37. | :23:42.
recognise these man from these images, pick-up phone. | :23:42. | :23:45.

faces? Give us a call, if you did. We are on 08000 468999. Or you can | :23:49. | :23:52.

They are on 0800 555111. Bikes left in public places like | :24:10. | :24:13.
this are an easy target for thieves. But now expensive bikes kept under | :24:13. | :24:15.
lock and key are also becoming a target. | :24:15. | :24:23.
Cycling's popularity has soared in recent years. But for Harry, from | :24:23. | :24:29.
Hazel Grove near Stockport, it has been a lifelong obsession. | :24:29. | :24:35.
I have been cycling since I was 12, over 40 years. | :24:36. | :24:42.
Cycling is my life. His hobby has taken him thousands of miles. This | :24:42. | :24:46.
was a trip to Scotland. And when he retired from work, how we really | :24:46. | :24:51.
began to enjoy his hobby. I used to work in a biscuit factory | :24:51. | :24:56.
as a manager. I took early retirement when I was 55 and the | :24:56. | :25:01.
lump sum that I got from my pension, I used that money to indulge my | :25:01. | :25:07.
passion of cycling. Knowing how desirable his top of the | :25:07. | :25:11.
range bikes were, he made sure they were kept secure and that securely | :25:11. | :25:18.
locked up. But in March this year, that security was put to the test. | :25:18. | :25:22.
I had bought an outbuilding to store them in, I tried to make that a | :25:22. | :25:29.
secure as possible. I secured the doors with clasps that people could | :25:29. | :25:34.
not cut through with hacksaws. The thieves could not wake him | :25:34. | :25:40.
through the reinforced walls or the securely locked door. But that was | :25:40. | :25:44.
not going to stop them. They found a weakness and they smashed through | :25:44. | :25:47.
the roof, former pro-bikes were stolen. | :25:47. | :25:52.
When I got out of bed that morning, I came downstairs and I looked into | :25:52. | :25:57.
the garden and I saw the debris from the break-in, and I went cold. | :25:57. | :26:03.
I was just devastated. Around 18,000 worth of top-quality and | :26:03. | :26:08.
much loved cycles had been taken, including this red frame. | :26:08. | :26:14.
My wife bought it for me for my 60th birthday, it was handmade. It was | :26:14. | :26:19.
probably the only one in the country, if not the world, because | :26:19. | :26:25.
it was designed to the way I had asked it to be done. I was very | :26:25. | :26:30.
upset. Very angry with them. I just thought it was wrong that these | :26:30. | :26:39.
people could come and take what I had worked hard for all my life. | :26:39. | :26:48.
We are going to get some tips on bike Security in a minute. First of | :26:48. | :26:52.
all, Harry's case, was he specifically targeted. | :26:52. | :26:58.
It would appear that he was. They targeted his bikes, which were | :26:58. | :27:06.
high-end and very expensive, about 20,000 worth of cycles. | :27:06. | :27:09.
Particularly the pedal cycle, it was individually built for Harry. | :27:10. | :27:14.
A lot of people here, you may have a bike here and want to know what to | :27:14. | :27:19.
do. Talk about marking up the bike first. | :27:19. | :27:24.
With most bikes, it you will find that they have a serial reference | :27:24. | :27:30.
number and you have only got to turn the bike upside down to find that. | :27:30. | :27:35.
Take details of that number. If your bike is stolen and we can | :27:35. | :27:43.
cross-reference that. We also have a postcode on the base. That is marked | :27:43. | :27:48.
on and will be removed -- cannot be removed, and we can recover it with | :27:48. | :27:51.
that. We also have stickers that have your | :27:51. | :27:57.
house address and postcode which we can place anywhere on your right. We | :27:57. | :28:01.
recommend you put your postcode on the bike. | :28:01. | :28:06.
In at least two places. Let's take a look at a bike theft that took place | :28:06. | :28:12.
here recently. This guy appears particularly | :28:12. | :28:17.
interested in a bike. The problem is, it is not his bike. But with the | :28:17. | :28:22.
help of old cutters, he has decided to take it anyway. He does not know | :28:22. | :28:26.
he has been spotted by police and they are giving chase. Jason was | :28:26. | :28:33.
caught red-handed and he was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison. | :28:33. | :28:37.
And that was unbelievably quick. We spoke about marking up the bikes, | :28:37. | :28:43.
what about locks? Most of us have them, but have we got the right | :28:43. | :28:48.
ones? There are varying degrees of locks. | :28:48. | :28:55.
The cable locks or not the most secure, we would certainly advocate | :28:55. | :29:01.
removing the front wheel, because sometimes the wheel can be removed, | :29:01. | :29:08.
and clamping the Amur onto the wheel. You would need an angle | :29:08. | :29:13.
grinder to remove that. -- the D-lock. If somebody had | :29:13. | :29:18.
this, how safe is this? Not very safe, a thief with bolt | :29:18. | :29:23.
cutters can come along and, as you can see. Straight through, not great | :29:23. | :29:27.
to see. I hope you are picking up tips for | :29:27. | :29:37.
:29:37. | :29:40. | ||
know you like a barbecue and many of us like to enjoy our gardens during | :29:40. | :29:46.
the more warmer months. Many of us can forget to secure windows and | :29:46. | :29:54.
doors. Once thief we caught last year took full advantage. This CCTV | :29:54. | :29:57.
shows the thief walking up the driveway of a family home in | :29:57. | :30:01.
Nottinghamshire. He doesn't go straight into the house. He checks | :30:01. | :30:06.
the coast is clear. Then, as the front door is not locked, he just | :30:06. | :30:11.
lets himself in. After a few minutes inside the house, he comes out | :30:12. | :30:16.
having stolen a watch and some jewellery. He had almost made his | :30:17. | :30:20.
mistake when he was spotted by a decorator who was working in the | :30:20. | :30:25.
house. But when questioned, the burglar brazenly walked off. He | :30:25. | :30:29.
might have thought he had got away with it, until we ran the CCTV on | :30:29. | :30:35.
Crimewatch Roadshow. It was just so cheeky. What happened after the | :30:35. | :30:41.
show? We received ten calls all suggesting names. Simon Carter | :30:41. | :30:47.
eliminated all but nine of them. The final lead to a man called Darren | :30:47. | :30:51.
Coomber, who fitted the description perfectly and was a prolific | :30:51. | :30:55.
criminal. He actually had a distinctive six inch scar across his | :30:55. | :31:02.
face. They identified their suspect, what happened then? As luck | :31:02. | :31:06.
would have it, he was already in prison for a similar offence. As | :31:06. | :31:10.
Simon turned up to interview him, he said, I knew you were coming. He had | :31:10. | :31:16.
actually been watching Crimewatch Roadshow himself and seen the CCTV. | :31:16. | :31:22.
Presumably he admitted the offence? Yes, plus another burglary, which | :31:22. | :31:28.
was discovered after he discarded a handbag. This guy is all over the | :31:28. | :31:32.
place. He pleaded guilty to that and was given another four and a half | :31:32. | :31:37.
years on top of his current sentence. A really strong result. | :31:37. | :31:42.
The victim of that crime was very happy as well. A very distinctive | :31:42. | :31:49.
character. It was within a matter of weeks that we had an identification. | :31:50. | :31:54.
And got to court. There was some satisfaction, not complete closure | :31:54. | :31:57.
because you can't replace the items, they were extremely sentimental and | :31:58. | :32:04.
nobody can replace that. However, putting that person behind bars for | :32:04. | :32:10.
taking two items of jewellery, it is a decent sentence. I think without | :32:10. | :32:13.
the programme and getting it shown on Crimewatch Roadshow, I don't | :32:13. | :32:18.
include would have got a result. Some degree of closure there. You | :32:18. | :32:24.
have got another one? We always get good success with our faces and one | :32:24. | :32:31.
in particular, Darren Cowland, also known as Darren Tear. He realised | :32:31. | :32:35.
the game was up because he gave himself into a police patrol car. | :32:35. | :32:41.
Which is brilliant. He pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with | :32:41. | :32:47.
intent and a sexual assault and was actually given 14 years in prison. | :32:47. | :32:52.
really good result there for someone who clearly needs to be off the | :32:52. | :32:57.
streets. You are back next week with more, look forward to that. What is | :32:57. | :33:07.
:33:07. | :33:08. | ||
shone up to in Manchester? -- Sian. Manchester is a mecca for shoppers | :33:08. | :33:13.
but unfortunately, along with the profits, there is crime. Shoplifting | :33:13. | :33:18.
is a big problem. Across the force area, about 1000 cases of | :33:18. | :33:21.
shoplifting are reported every month. Police are cracking down on | :33:21. | :33:25.
it with the retailers and PC Jo Shaw is with me. What is happening in | :33:25. | :33:30.
this shop on our right? We have just had information of a suspicious | :33:30. | :33:37.
mail, he is white, wearing a stripey jumper, he has just entered the shoe | :33:37. | :33:42.
shop as we speak. He is browsing. People are going to be on alert | :33:42. | :33:47.
because of this message. I am just going to see if we have a patrol | :33:47. | :33:52.
that can come down. Is there a patrol near St Ann's Square that can | :33:52. | :34:00.
come down for a suspicious mail? Is there a patrol, please? You are | :34:00. | :34:04.
calling out, and you would be getting messages through if there | :34:04. | :34:09.
was an officer in this area who would be coming down to patrol and | :34:09. | :34:16.
have a look on to see what is happening? This person is coming out | :34:16. | :34:19.
of the shop and he is followed by the security guard. There is an | :34:19. | :34:25.
officer coming up and we can see the action unfold in front of our eyes. | :34:25. | :34:30.
Is this what could happen? This happens quite frequently, security | :34:30. | :34:35.
guards monitor and observe and use a radio so we get quite a lot of | :34:35. | :34:40.
people detained. This was not a real case, it is a member of our team | :34:40. | :34:44.
that is helping out so that we can show however body is connected up in | :34:45. | :34:51.
the city centre. You are all trying to tackle the problem together and | :34:51. | :34:56.
there are some exclusions that the police are not exactly themselves | :34:56. | :35:01.
excluding people, but that is happening. It usually happens when | :35:01. | :35:04.
somebody has shoplifted on three occasions in the city centre. If | :35:04. | :35:08.
they display any violence or threats on the first time, they would get | :35:08. | :35:15.
excluded. But not by this police, a separate company. Thank you, people | :35:15. | :35:20.
like to come here to do their shopping, I certainly do. We have | :35:20. | :35:25.
seen Manchester by day, let's check it out why night. It is early | :35:26. | :35:29.
evening in Manchester. Finally, the shoppers are heading home and the | :35:29. | :35:33.
city begins to prepare for a different crowd. But as the | :35:33. | :35:37.
revellers get ready for a night on the tiles, the police are already on | :35:37. | :35:45.
the streets. Sergeants are patrolling the busy Piccadilly | :35:45. | :35:49.
Gardens area on the part of two miles that make up the busy city | :35:49. | :35:57.
centre. People are coming home from work, popping into the city, one or | :35:57. | :36:07.
two people might be eating and then getting ready for a night out. | :36:07. | :36:10.
are not expecting trouble yet but a few minutes later they are called to | :36:10. | :36:13.
a building site. A man has been spotted 30 feet up scaffolding, it | :36:13. | :36:19.
is thought he has been drinking. What are you doing? You have been | :36:19. | :36:26.
drinking? A much have you had? man is lucky not to have fallen to | :36:26. | :36:34.
his death. How far did you go? got halfway. Was it enough to kill | :36:34. | :36:44.
:36:44. | :36:48. | ||
yourself if you felt? The men decide to send him home. Unfortunately | :36:48. | :36:54.
people get drunk, a bit of bravado and then they go beyond their means. | :36:54. | :36:58.
Making sure all goes smoothly in the biggest city in the north-west on a | :36:58. | :37:04.
Saturday night is a giant task. The 50 strong police team expect more | :37:04. | :37:14.
:37:14. | :37:21. | ||
than 100,000 people to come to party at over 600 of Manchester's venues. | :37:21. | :37:24.
As night falls, DC Fernandez and special constable Hanssen head out | :37:24. | :37:28.
to patrol the city's Gay Village, can our street. It is Saturday | :37:28. | :37:33.
night, there is a lot of alcohol, people come out for a good time. The | :37:33. | :37:39.
minorities caused the problems. Despite the party atmosphere, | :37:40. | :37:46.
trouble kicks off. There is a disturbance outside a club. Just | :37:46. | :37:52.
calm down. A man with electric bunny ears is causing trouble. It's a | :37:52. | :38:00.
racist assault. Get off! I am not doing nothing. Get your white hands | :38:00. | :38:10.
:38:10. | :38:12. | ||
off me. You are under arrest for being drunk and disorderly. The man | :38:12. | :38:22.
:38:22. | :38:29. | ||
to the police station to sober up. This particular mail has probably | :38:29. | :38:34.
had too many to drink so he has decided to cause a few issues | :38:34. | :38:44.
:38:44. | :38:53. | ||
well. They have a good working relationship and check licenses | :38:53. | :39:00.
and/or staff to ensure everything is in order -- and door staff. It is | :39:00. | :39:04.
the time of night when serious disturbances can kick off. These PCs | :39:04. | :39:11.
are on duty. Myself and my colleague our response officers in Manchester | :39:11. | :39:17.
city centre we are about to head out and see what we shift brings. | :39:17. | :39:21.
is the time of night when clubs begin to close and some of the | :39:21. | :39:25.
late-night crowd are at their most wrong. Reports of a street brawl | :39:25. | :39:31.
take them across town. -- at their most drunk. The men claim they have | :39:31. | :39:36.
been attacked by a larger group. To calm things down, the police try to | :39:36. | :39:42.
move the men on quickly, but they don't cooperate. One man kicks off. | :39:42. | :39:52.
:39:52. | :40:07. | ||
Get off me! Don't hear Tim! -- don't are under arrest for being drunk and | :40:08. | :40:15.
disorderly. Anything you say may be given in evidence. Up you get. | :40:15. | :40:18.
police decide to arrest him for being drunk and disorderly but the | :40:18. | :40:26.
men haven't finished yet. If I have to have a chat with you one more | :40:26. | :40:31.
time. Start walking that way, now. Start going. If I have to have a | :40:31. | :40:41.
:40:41. | :40:42. | ||
word with you one more time, start going. Leave the area. The PC often | :40:42. | :40:49.
sees cases like this. It is the alcohol problem. These people are | :40:49. | :40:53.
probably very nice people when they are sober but they consume too much | :40:53. | :40:58.
alcohol and get involved in trouble like this, it is unnecessary. | :40:58. | :41:03.
at police HQ, the man is booked into custody. He later paid a fixed | :41:03. | :41:08.
penalty of 80. And the reveller with the bunny ears, he pleaded | :41:08. | :41:13.
guilty to a public order offence and was fine. As the sun comes up, the | :41:14. | :41:20.
team head back out for one last patrol -- and was fined. At the end | :41:20. | :41:24.
of the ship, we have come to do a bit of high visibility patrolling | :41:24. | :41:29.
around the Canal Street area of Manchester. It has quietened down, | :41:29. | :41:36.
it looks like everyone has started to go home which is good news. | :41:36. | :41:40.
just seven arrests out of the tens of thousands visiting the city, it | :41:40. | :41:50.
:41:50. | :41:51. | ||
has been a safe and fun night out for most. However saw their heads | :41:51. | :41:53.
