Today on Crimewatch Roadshow: Help us find the heartless burglars who | :00:17. | :00:27.
:00:27. | :00:40. | ||
threatened a mother and her tiny Hello and welcome to Crimewatch | :00:40. | :00:46.
Roadshow. We are live and it is our final week on air. We will be | :00:46. | :00:50.
asking for your help to solve the crime is that affect us all on the | :00:50. | :00:56.
programme today. Going for gold, a terrifying burglary that left a | :00:57. | :01:03.
mother fearing for her baby boy's life. The thieves targeting the | :01:03. | :01:10.
marvellous Mini in a city that created the classic car. And pacing | :01:10. | :01:17.
the pavements in Stourbridge. Cracking down on thefts from cars. | :01:17. | :01:21.
Our Road Show team are still travelling the country. It is their | :01:21. | :01:26.
final week on the road and they are in the West Midlands. | :01:26. | :01:31.
I am in Victoria Square right in the heart of Birmingham and this is | :01:31. | :01:37.
one of the City's most famous exports, the mini-car. The West | :01:37. | :01:40.
Midlands Police are investigating a sharp rise in the theft of these | :01:41. | :01:47.
classic cars. More about that later. Another thing Birmingham is famous | :01:47. | :01:51.
for is its jewellery quarter. There are around 400 businesses there and | :01:51. | :01:57.
most of them sell gold, the value of which has risen by 500% over the | :01:57. | :02:01.
last six years. That is a fact which criminals are all too well | :02:01. | :02:09.
aware of as well, as one Birmingham family found out to their cost. | :02:09. | :02:12.
is just things that could have been passed down to my children which we | :02:12. | :02:18.
do not have any more. I am very scared, I still have nightmares, I | :02:18. | :02:28.
:02:28. | :02:29. | ||
do not have the guts to be on my own in the house. Reshan was | :02:29. | :02:36.
getting ready to go to work, leaving his wife Sadia and the baby. | :02:36. | :02:42.
He used to wake up during the night time and I thought I would be | :02:42. | :02:47.
sleeping for a more time, than going downstairs. They were asleep | :02:47. | :02:51.
and I left the house at about quarter past seven, so it was a | :02:51. | :03:00.
regular day. But there would be nothing regular about this day as | :03:00. | :03:06.
Sadia slept with her baby son by her side. Three men broke in | :03:06. | :03:09.
downstairs and they knew exactly what they were looking for, | :03:09. | :03:17.
precious gold jewellery. They were all a young age, no more than 18 or | :03:17. | :03:24.
19. They were very skinny, three of them, but the black guy was a big | :03:24. | :03:30.
build and he said, where is the gold? I gave everything I had in my | :03:30. | :03:35.
room at first, Mike earrings, they were gold and diamonds. He said, it | :03:35. | :03:41.
is not enough, give me more. majority of the jewellery was not | :03:41. | :03:45.
kept in the bedroom when the offenders first confronted her. | :03:45. | :03:49.
They told her they knew there was more and they wanted her to show | :03:49. | :03:54.
them where it was. All Sadia could think about was her | :03:54. | :03:59.
baby son. She wanted to protect him, but she had to do the unthinkable, | :03:59. | :04:05.
handing over to one of the burglars. The black guy said, leave the baby | :04:05. | :04:13.
with me. This robbery is made more serious buyer that there was a | :04:13. | :04:17.
young child that was present and either threatened, or a threat was | :04:17. | :04:21.
implied against them. Sadia was torn between her baby | :04:21. | :04:25.
screaming for comfort and the robbers screaming for God. She had | :04:25. | :04:29.
no choice but to leave her son behind and give the robbers what | :04:29. | :04:33.
they wanted. I wanted them to get out of the house as soon as they | :04:33. | :04:40.
could. For that I could pay any price. If I had more things with me, | :04:40. | :04:46.
I would have given them everything. I do not mind as long as me and my | :04:46. | :04:52.
baby were safe. I told them, do not touch my baby. They ransacked three | :04:52. | :04:55.
rooms and they refused to give the baby back to vet until they were | :04:55. | :05:02.
sure they had every last piece of pressures, gold jewellery. I did | :05:02. | :05:06.
not have anything else. I have given you everything, so go from | :05:06. | :05:15.
here now. They took everything from the room and other rooms as well. | :05:15. | :05:23.
And then they went. With her baby boy back in her arms and sure that | :05:23. | :05:28.
the burglars had left the house, Sadia rang the police. They got | :05:28. | :05:33.
away with a considerable amount, a lot of Asian gold and wedding | :05:33. | :05:39.
jewellery and other valuable items. In total we believe it was around | :05:39. | :05:45.
40,000 worth. It was passed down through my grandfather and my | :05:45. | :05:48.
grandmother to my father and then passed down to my mum and then | :05:48. | :05:54.
passed down to us. Some of it was bought a long time ago, and it is | :05:54. | :06:00.
irreplaceable. The robbery has left Sadia terrified of being left by | :06:00. | :06:10.
:06:10. | :06:13. | ||
herself. I took a week off work so I could spend time with my son and | :06:13. | :06:19.
my wife. I still have nightmares, I do not have the guts to be alone in | :06:19. | :06:26.
my house. I am joined by DC Damian Forrest who is investigating this | :06:26. | :06:32.
case. It was a really nasty burglary. It was. Having three | :06:32. | :06:35.
people burst into your home it would be scary enough, but she was | :06:35. | :06:41.
there with a four-month-old trialled, dozing on her bed. The | :06:41. | :06:44.
defenders made Sadia and the child over to them at whilst they went | :06:44. | :06:49.
around the house looking for gold to steal. We have got some | :06:49. | :06:55.
descriptions. We are looking for a three males. A white male who was | :06:55. | :07:00.
18-19 years old, skinny build, wearing a black and grey bandana | :07:00. | :07:06.
and dark clothing. An Asian male who was the same age, a slightly | :07:06. | :07:10.
bigger build and he was dressed in similar clothing, but with lighter | :07:10. | :07:15.
trousers. The third male, a black male, it was carrying a metal bar | :07:15. | :07:20.
or crowbar type implement. He was slightly more muscular, again | :07:20. | :07:24.
dressed in a bandana and dark clothing. A tell us about the | :07:24. | :07:30.
jewellery. It is very distinctive. It is a number of items including | :07:30. | :07:36.
an Asian gold wedding set which is worth about 40,000 in total. A lot | :07:36. | :07:41.
of it was made bespoke and brought over from Pakistan. Some of the | :07:41. | :07:48.
items have been in the family for generations. One ring was engraved | :07:48. | :07:52.
with the grandfather's name and also Sadia was engraved on a | :07:52. | :07:57.
necklace. It was irreplaceable for them and such sentimental value. | :07:57. | :08:02.
What is likely to have happened with it? With items like this we | :08:02. | :08:08.
recover a small amount, but the majority are melted down as they | :08:08. | :08:14.
are so valuable as a base metal. are not far from the jewellery | :08:14. | :08:18.
quarter and Terry Stevenson from Lois Jewellery has come along and | :08:18. | :08:24.
she has brought an amazing array of gold. It looks absolutely beautiful. | :08:24. | :08:31.
This is what we are talking about. This is a typical wedding jewellery | :08:31. | :08:40.
set. It would retail at about 5,000. They would scrap that | :08:40. | :08:43.
40,500 because these families cannot insure these pieces because | :08:43. | :08:50.
it cost so much money. You could not actually wear it every day. | :08:50. | :08:56.
They are so worried that the items are going to get stolen. We have | :08:56. | :09:02.
got security here with us today, this is worth an awful lot of money. | :09:02. | :09:06.
We have got the jewellery which is stunning and we have also got the | :09:06. | :09:10.
gold bars because this is what the gold is melted down to. This is | :09:10. | :09:19.
what it looks like. This is worth 65,000. That is worth 40,000 plus. | :09:19. | :09:23.
We are talking about a lot of money. When you said that families bring | :09:23. | :09:28.
their jewellery end that is because they are so scared about it being | :09:28. | :09:33.
stolen. It must be an anguished to make that decision. Obviously it | :09:33. | :09:37.
has been in the family for so many years and at the end of the day it | :09:37. | :09:42.
is heartbreaking to get it melted down. This is a very high carat | :09:42. | :09:50.
gold, isn't it? That is 22 carat, which is high value, but these are | :09:50. | :09:56.
fine gold, they are even higher at 24 carat. There are other pieces of | :09:56. | :10:03.
the jewellery. These would be about 2,500 alone. You do not need much | :10:03. | :10:10.
to make it into a high value items. When you say people bring gold to | :10:10. | :10:16.
you shot how do you make sure it is not stolen? We ask them to fill out | :10:16. | :10:21.
a form, get identification, driving licence, passport, so we do our | :10:21. | :10:27.
best to check these people out. Thank you for bringing this along | :10:27. | :10:31.
and also thank you both of you as well for looking after the gold and | :10:31. | :10:35.
asked this morning. I can assure you this is all going back into the | :10:35. | :10:40.
safe. It is time to take a look at the | :10:40. | :10:46.
most candid cameras of all. Here are our first lot of crooks caught | :10:46. | :10:50.
on CCTV. A house in Burnley. It is an | :10:50. | :10:55.
evening in May. This uninvited guest is looking for awake in. | :10:55. | :10:58.
Watch how he squirms his way through the open window and sees a | :10:59. | :11:04.
key in the door and leaned over to unlock it. Once he is in, he takes | :11:04. | :11:09.
his time wiping his prints off the door handle and such is the house. | :11:09. | :11:16.
He finds a handbag which he hides in his clothes. The contents were | :11:16. | :11:19.
worth 130. He leaves and takes the key with him, locking the door on | :11:19. | :11:29.
:11:29. | :11:30. | ||
the way out. Do you know this burglar? A night bus in Croydon. A | :11:30. | :11:35.
man is being violently assaulted. His attacker had asked him for his | :11:35. | :11:40.
telephone, but when he refused to hand it over, he started laying | :11:40. | :11:45.
into him. The victim up thought the man off, but it was a terrifying | :11:45. | :11:55.
ordeal. Can you recognise this man? Give us a call. Dagenham and an | :11:55. | :12:00.
elderly man is using a cash machine. Watch as the man in the cap loiters | :12:00. | :12:05.
behind him. He is clocking his PIN number. He covers the machine with | :12:05. | :12:12.
a piece of paper, rejects the card and takes it. The thief uses the | :12:12. | :12:18.
card in the cash machine right next to his victim. He withdraws 300 | :12:18. | :12:28.
and makes his escape. Do you recognise the Seamus scoundrel -- | :12:28. | :12:33.
Seamus scoundrel? If you recognise them, you can call | :12:33. | :12:43.
:12:43. | :12:50. | ||
us. The space is important in the text message. You can send us an e- | :12:50. | :12:55.
mail as well. Being a bobby on the beat is not | :12:55. | :12:59.
without its challenges, but being armed with the latest technology | :12:59. | :13:07.
can make a difference. Colin price from South Wales Police is | :13:07. | :13:17.
Pontypridd's one-man CCTV. How did you get that title? From all of my | :13:17. | :13:25.
gadgets. Tell us about this, this is not an ordinary mobile telephone. | :13:25. | :13:31.
It is a CCTV monitor. I can get live images but any camera in my | :13:31. | :13:38.
area where I work whilst I am anywhere on duty. You could be out | :13:38. | :13:43.
on the beat and your control room could send the images from the CCTV | :13:43. | :13:50.
director your telephone? Yes.We can see it in action right now. | :13:51. | :13:56.
have had this for about two years and it is superb. This is my mobile | :13:56. | :14:03.
camera. If I want to record anything, I can snap it down and be | :14:03. | :14:09.
caught anybody. These radio is a direct link to that CCTV control | :14:09. | :14:14.
room. Where I am standing now I have got three cameras that I could | :14:14. | :14:23.
call on at any time. If I stop and search somebody, my back is covered | :14:23. | :14:33.
:14:33. | :14:45. | ||
things by my colleagues at work. Robocop, the Sheriff, you name it. I | :14:45. | :14:53.
do not mind what I am called, it makes my job easier. That is | :14:53. | :15:03.
:15:03. | :15:12. | ||
perfect. One of the things we saw was the body camera. It is a small | :15:12. | :15:16.
one we can see on the screen. a really clear image that we can see | :15:16. | :15:19.
of me. Just tell me, from work point of view, how can this be handy for | :15:19. | :15:21.
you? You are talking from low-level shoplifters, it gathers the | :15:21. | :15:31.
:15:31. | :15:34. | ||
evidence. Public order is a great one. Saturday night, people have | :15:34. | :15:36.
been drinking too much, there is a scuffle, it is all captured on | :15:36. | :15:39.
camera. It says smile, you are on CCTV. They know they are being | :15:39. | :15:41.
filmed. I tell them that. And your protection of someone wanted to take | :15:41. | :15:46.
a swing at you, great protection for the officers. The other big one is | :15:46. | :15:49.
domestic violence. If I go to a domestic violence call and the | :15:49. | :15:55.
victim is there, this will record the injuries. Should they want to | :15:55. | :16:01.
withdraw a statement, we can go on a victim list prosecution for the CPS. | :16:01. | :16:04.
The camera never lies. There is another piece of kit I am intrigued | :16:04. | :16:14.
:16:14. | :16:24. | ||
about. What is this? Metal Mickey is a portable camera. If we get an area | :16:24. | :16:27.
where there is a high crime area or anti-social behaviour, which plays a | :16:27. | :16:29.
lot of people's minds, if it is high-level stuff, I can have a | :16:30. | :16:33.
meeting with the local authority. We will put up a sign saying the area | :16:33. | :16:36.
is being monitored. The unique thing about Mickey is I can control him | :16:36. | :16:43.
from my phone. I have control of these cameras. You can have one of | :16:43. | :16:53.
these put in, very simply and the images these record goes direct to | :16:53. | :16:56.
your phone wherever you are. Thank you very much for coming in. I | :16:56. | :16:58.
love that stuff. For now, let's go back to Sian who has an urgent | :16:58. | :17:01.
appeal in Birmingham. Yes, we need your help to find the | :17:01. | :17:10.
men who raided a shop south-west of here in Quinton. It was a really | :17:10. | :17:12.
scary attack. Let's take a look at what happened. | :17:12. | :17:15.
It is Saturday night at a convenience store and two men into | :17:15. | :17:24.
the shop. One of them brandishes a large kitchen knife. The man | :17:25. | :17:28.
threatens the shop worker and demands that she opens the till. The | :17:28. | :17:38.
:17:38. | :17:41. | ||
terrified woman has no choice. The two men then start helping | :17:41. | :17:44.
themselves to the night's takings. The hooded male hands are bad to the | :17:44. | :17:47.
shop assistant and tells her to fill it with cigarettes. At this point, | :17:47. | :17:54.
an elderly man enters the shop. Although the robbers tell him to get | :17:54. | :17:56.
out, he bravely stands his ground. The men decide enough is enough and | :17:56. | :18:02.
make their getaway. Desperate for a smoke, they make one last attempt to | :18:02. | :18:04.
grab the cigarettes. The shop assistant stands her ground and | :18:04. | :18:11.
refuses. These brazen thieves got away with 600 in notes and about | :18:11. | :18:19.
200 in coins. I am joined by DC Phil Langstone who | :18:19. | :18:21.
is investigating this case. Really frightening for the shop worker. | :18:21. | :18:31.
:18:31. | :18:40. | ||
Yes, she was working alone in the store. She had a gentleman rush at | :18:40. | :18:43.
her with a knife. She was forced behind the counter and she was then | :18:43. | :18:46.
aware that there were two offenders. She was ordered to do what they say | :18:46. | :18:49.
otherwise she would get hurt. She was given a bag she was told to fill | :18:49. | :18:53.
with cigarettes while they emptied the contents of the till. You have | :18:53. | :18:55.
got descriptions of the men? Yes, the main offender who had a large | :18:55. | :18:58.
kitchen knife is described as white, approximately five foot five, late | :18:58. | :19:08.
:19:08. | :19:11. | ||
30s and heavy build. The second offender was described as being in | :19:11. | :19:14.
his mid-20s, five foot seven, slim build. He was wearing all dark | :19:14. | :19:17.
clothing with his face covered with a baseball cap. She was very brave, | :19:17. | :19:20.
wasn't she? She did turn around and refused to give them cigarettes and | :19:20. | :19:24.
told them they are on camera at which point they ran. Amazing. Act | :19:24. | :19:32.
to you. Now time to look at today's Wanted | :19:32. | :19:34.
Faces. This man, Przemyslaw Jan Rustelnick, is first today. Police | :19:34. | :19:44.
:19:44. | :19:46. | ||
want to question him about a number of burglaries in West London. He is | :19:46. | :19:49.
originally from Romania. He has a patio of an eye on the back of his | :19:49. | :19:57.
neck. Next up is this man. He imprisoned a woman in her own home | :19:57. | :20:07.
:20:07. | :20:10. | ||
and she had cash stolen. He has a cat two of the word speedy on his | :20:10. | :20:14.
left arm and one of a panther and two names on his right arm. He has | :20:14. | :20:18.
links to south Wales and Manchester. A warrant was issued for Maxie | :20:18. | :20:28.
:20:28. | :20:45. | ||
Donald Gunanantham's arrest. He was accused of obtaining a loan in | :20:45. | :20:47.
someone else's name. He was born in Sri Lanka but has connections to | :20:47. | :20:49.
Accrington and London. And finally we have 27-year-old Shenaz Naeem. | :20:49. | :20:52.
She is wanted for questioning by police in greater Manchester. She is | :20:52. | :20:54.
part of a gang of thieves travelling across the UK distracting people at | :20:54. | :21:01.
cashpoints. She is known to have links to East London and the West | :21:01. | :21:04.
Midlands. Where is she now? If you know the whereabouts of any of these | :21:04. | :21:14.
:21:14. | :21:18. | ||
people you can call us or text us or send us an e-mail. Still to come: | :21:18. | :21:20.
how police in Stourbridge are cracking down on careless car | :21:20. | :21:30.
:21:30. | :21:32. | ||
owners. The Mini is an iconic reddish | :21:32. | :21:34.
design, born and bred here in the West Midlands. Their popularity has | :21:34. | :21:39.
not faded since the 60s. It is not just collectors who love them -- an | :21:39. | :21:44.
iconic British design. Thefts of them have soared to epidemic | :21:44. | :21:53.
proportions. I love Minis, my family love Minis. My grandchildren want | :21:53. | :21:59.
them. We are all Mini mad. I passed my test, saw this car and thought I | :21:59. | :22:09.
:22:09. | :22:09. | ||
am buying it. The Mini is the West Midlands. The first Minis rolled out | :22:09. | :22:14.
of burning in 1959 and started a small revolution across the world. | :22:14. | :22:20.
But for their owners, the Mini is more than just a car. When Sue | :22:20. | :22:22.
Belcher ought her special 30th anniversary Mini it was love at | :22:22. | :22:32.
:22:32. | :22:34. | ||
first sight. A lovely black Mini 30 with lots of chrome. Inside was | :22:34. | :22:36.
chrome and walnut. It was a beautiful car. Soon she bought it 11 | :22:36. | :22:46.
:22:46. | :22:47. | ||
years ago, Sue has sent thousands on her car. These are the wheels I | :22:48. | :22:50.
bought. But she never had a chance to put the wheels on her much loved | :22:51. | :22:57.
car. One evening in April she was at home when her beloved car was stolen | :22:57. | :23:02.
from right under her nose. I wanted to clear up so I started mopping the | :23:02. | :23:12.
:23:12. | :23:18. | ||
floor. I thought I saw the lights come on and go wash very fast. I | :23:18. | :23:20.
thought I was imagining it. I carried on mopping. I looked again | :23:20. | :23:23.
and it was slowly rolling off the drive. I thought I had left my | :23:23. | :23:25.
handbrake off. The thief had not started the engine so sue did not | :23:25. | :23:33.
realise her car had been stolen. ran out thinking it would cause an | :23:33. | :23:43.
:23:43. | :23:44. | ||
accident. There was a big fellow sitting in the car. Sue gave chase | :23:44. | :23:47.
but by now it was moving too fast for Sue to catch it. My heart was | :23:47. | :23:49.
pounding. It was a horrible thought. I could not believe somebody was | :23:49. | :23:55.
stealing my car. I never thought it would happen. I am still hoping I | :23:55. | :24:05.
:24:05. | :24:11. | ||
will get it back. Motorway cop Alan Colman is also a | :24:11. | :24:14.
Mini enthusiasts. He has made it his mission to investigate and has | :24:15. | :24:17.
discovered there has been a recent surge in the theft of these classic | :24:17. | :24:24.
cars. Since September I have noticed 35 Minis have been stolen in the | :24:24. | :24:27.
West Midlands Police area alone. That accounts for half of the Minis | :24:27. | :24:32.
stolen nationally. These little cars are worth a lot more than people | :24:32. | :24:40.
think. Recently they have been selling for a lot of money. One sold | :24:40. | :24:45.
for 40,000 at an auction. A Monte Carlo Mini can be worth anything up | :24:45. | :24:54.
to 100,000. Many Mini owners like John MacAllister are happy to spend | :24:54. | :24:58.
a fortune restoring their vintage cars. I dread to think how much I | :24:58. | :25:05.
have spent on it. I work solidly for a year and a half to buy a Mini in | :25:05. | :25:11.
the first place. On the 4th of April, while John was at work in a | :25:11. | :25:18.
retail park he thought -- he caught a would-be thief in the act and | :25:18. | :25:24.
chased after him. It was pretty brazen. It was a sunny day. | :25:24. | :25:29.
Rush-hour traffic, a lot of people are all about. A mate of mine said, | :25:29. | :25:33.
there is someone looking at your car. The unwanted admirer was not | :25:33. | :25:40.
just looking at John's car, was in it. It was not until I got to the | :25:40. | :25:50.
entrance that I saw the door was open on and I saw a guy pop his head | :25:50. | :25:55.
up. I took off like a rocket and flu after him. He made his way through | :25:55. | :25:58.
the bushes and jumped over the perimeter fence. He got into a car | :25:58. | :26:00.
waiting for him on the main road. The interesting thing about John's | :26:00. | :26:07.
case is John witnessed them trying to steal his Mini. He gave me a lead | :26:07. | :26:14.
that they got into a dark coloured Renault Megane Scenic and he gave me | :26:14. | :26:21.
a registration number that he thought was correct. The getaway car | :26:21. | :26:23.
turned out to have false number plates but it has still given the | :26:23. | :26:30.
police a vital clue. I did a bit more digging and I found that this | :26:30. | :26:32.
vehicle had been in company with another Mini which was stolen two | :26:32. | :26:41.
weeks later and we have now linked that vehicle to two War three other | :26:41. | :26:44.
thefts of Minis. That is an avenue of investigation I am looking at at | :26:44. | :26:47.
the minute to identify who owns that vehicle. I am convinced it is an | :26:47. | :26:52.
organised group of criminals. A lot of these vehicles go missing. It is | :26:52. | :27:02.
:27:02. | :27:05. | ||
destroying people's lives. I knew it could not be replaced. I cannot | :27:05. | :27:08.
believe it has been taken. I cannot believe anyone would do it. I am | :27:08. | :27:16.
still gutted. I am as gutted today as when it was first taken. | :27:16. | :27:19.
I am with PC Alan Colman who we saw in that film. It is very upsetting | :27:19. | :27:22.
for the owners of Minis. What information do we have? We are still | :27:22. | :27:27.
interested in the red Renault Megane Scenic. Anyone who has had their | :27:27. | :27:32.
cars stolen, if they think they saw that car around the time, it might | :27:32. | :27:42.
:27:42. | :27:43. | ||
have been two weeks before, all the time of the theft, they need to | :27:43. | :27:46.
contact us. We know that vehicle has been sold on to another person but | :27:46. | :27:49.
we are still interested in it. do you think is happening to the | :27:49. | :27:53.
Minis? I'd am pretty certain the vehicles have not been sold on the | :27:53. | :27:56.
open market. The classic Mini immunity is very close. They would | :27:56. | :28:02.
let me know if that vehicle has been stripped or partner come for sale. I | :28:02. | :28:06.
think they are being stored in storage yards or containers and | :28:06. | :28:10.
waiting to be moved on. Have you ever come across anything like this | :28:10. | :28:16.
a few years ago -- before? A few years ago the nanograms community | :28:16. | :28:26.
:28:26. | :28:38. | ||
suffered the same fate -- M G. We found those vehicles packed up. | :28:38. | :28:41.
are a minivan. We have got something to show you. This is an original | :28:41. | :28:43.
police Mini car. Really cute. She would have been policing the | :28:43. | :28:46.
streets. This particular car policed the streets of Liverpool. They used | :28:46. | :28:54.
them from around 1957. How do they manage? Word the office is six feet | :28:54. | :29:01.
tall? In Birmingham the officers had to be over six foot. There are lots | :29:01. | :29:04.
of hilarious stories about them trying to get in and out. I have | :29:04. | :29:10.
been wanting to have a look inside. The door handle is pretty stiff but | :29:10. | :29:20.
:29:20. | :29:20. | ||
when you go inside it is tiny in here. Just take a look at this. No | :29:20. | :29:23.
mobile phones in those days. This was the radio device so that is how | :29:23. | :29:25.
they would be getting their communications in those days. | :29:25. | :29:30.
Fascinating to see. How useful was it? It was used as a traffic car in | :29:31. | :29:40.
:29:41. | :29:41. | ||
and around the city centre. It was fantastic. However fast you are | :29:41. | :29:44.
going, it would go round the bend is. Let's take a look at it and how | :29:44. | :29:54.
:29:54. | :29:57. | ||
it would leave. Not too fast, I Later on we will be telling you how | :29:57. | :30:02.
you can best secure your car. A it is bad news when a thief is | :30:03. | :30:07.
scruffy enough to steal your car, but when drivers forget to lock | :30:07. | :30:11.
their car in the first place it is easy pickings for crooks. | :30:12. | :30:16.
There is an neighbourhood in Stourbridge near Birmingham where | :30:16. | :30:20.
the residents seem to trust one another and off Allott. It might be | :30:20. | :30:24.
that everyone here just has a very nice neighbours, because lots of | :30:25. | :30:31.
them do not seem too bothered about locking up their cars. We take it | :30:31. | :30:36.
as a positive that people feel comfortable and that they can leave | :30:36. | :30:39.
their cars unlocked because they do not think they will be victims of | :30:39. | :30:46.
crime. But when there was a sharp rise in crime in the area the | :30:46. | :30:50.
police went to find out what was going on. We were really surprised | :30:50. | :30:58.
by the amount of vehicles that were left unlocked. Two days later we | :30:58. | :31:05.
found 80. Within two days we had potentially 140 victims of crime. | :31:05. | :31:09.
Now the team are on a mission to get the locals to lock up their | :31:09. | :31:15.
cars. We are physically checking the vehicles to make sure they are | :31:15. | :31:21.
open or locked. If you bear with us, we welcome to you. The team have | :31:21. | :31:27.
already found a vehicle straight away. It is a van with the door | :31:27. | :31:33.
open and a load of tools out on display. We found your vehicle on | :31:33. | :31:40.
the street and it was not secure. The door was unlocked. The doors | :31:40. | :31:50.
:31:50. | :31:51. | ||
were all open. Can you come out and rectify the situation? I usually | :31:51. | :31:58.
Lockett because there are tours in it. I left it open and went into | :31:58. | :32:03.
the house and made an appointment with the dentist and that was it. | :32:03. | :32:08.
Soon that the police found another unlocked door of. All the doors are | :32:08. | :32:18.
:32:18. | :32:18. | ||
open. We have just checked it and it is not locked. I know.Do you | :32:18. | :32:24.
often leave it open? You need to address that. We are trying to | :32:24. | :32:27.
identify all the vehicles that are not secure and let the owners know | :32:27. | :32:35.
so that they know. I appreciate that. Please take it in the spirit | :32:35. | :32:40.
in which it is intended. We have been out for about 20 minutes and | :32:40. | :32:46.
have got about five or six already. I suppose everybody is looking out | :32:46. | :32:53.
for everybody. Just is tempting I that valuables left out on display. | :32:53. | :33:01.
There is a bag on the back seat. There is also clearly someone's | :33:01. | :33:06.
identity badge on the front. Would you mind coming to the vehicle and | :33:06. | :33:15.
removing it? I will do that. Fantastic. And the badge on the | :33:15. | :33:20.
front seat. A fantastic. It would be better to bring it into the | :33:21. | :33:25.
house. Absolutely, because you never know what people's intentions | :33:25. | :33:35.
:33:35. | :33:36. | ||
will be. And just when you thought it could not get any worse. | :33:36. | :33:41.
need to be aware of leaving valuables like that. You need to | :33:41. | :33:47.
secure your vehicle. OK. I think my little boy was with me and I was | :33:47. | :33:53.
distracted by the children and I left my credit cards -- credit | :33:53. | :33:59.
cards as well. It was appalling. has been a busy night with 21 cars | :33:59. | :34:05.
found unsecured in less than three hours. But they are not going to | :34:05. | :34:11.
get up on the neighbourhood. will never stop with this kind of | :34:11. | :34:15.
tactic. Offenders will always be out there and we will do our very | :34:15. | :34:19.
best to make sure we reduce the offenders and reduce the number of | :34:19. | :34:26.
vehicles they can actually break into. Leaving your car unlocked is | :34:26. | :34:30.
undoubtedly an open invitation for thieves, but nowadays the modern | :34:30. | :34:35.
cars are fitted with all sorts of security devices which make the job | :34:35. | :34:42.
pretty difficult. But what about the classic Mini? In the 1950s the | :34:42. | :34:48.
safety devices and security were pretty crude. Reshan is a many | :34:48. | :34:55.
lover, but he is going to show us how easily and quickly it can be | :34:55. | :35:00.
done to get into a car like this. I am going to time him. The stopwatch | :35:00. | :35:07.
is on. Obviously we are not going to show you exactly how he did that, | :35:07. | :35:12.
for obvious reasons, but it illustrates the point that people | :35:12. | :35:15.
have to be very careful and think about how they can secure cars like | :35:15. | :35:22.
this one will stop he is inside the vehicle now. We have got 23 seconds | :35:22. | :35:32.
on the clock. I am not sure what he was doing. He has just started the | :35:32. | :35:40.
car. Stop the clock and it is 34 seconds. Come on out. 34 seconds it | :35:40. | :35:45.
took you to do that. What we want to talk about is securing cars like | :35:45. | :35:51.
this. What can people do to protect them? The problem with the old Mini | :35:51. | :35:55.
is that the locks and the barrel is really worn out, so replace them as | :35:55. | :36:04.
soon as you can be. 22 and job done. What about these things?This | :36:04. | :36:09.
is a selection of steering locks. This is one of the better ones. It | :36:09. | :36:15.
is a visual deterrent as well as a good security one. That would put | :36:15. | :36:20.
somebody off. Yes, the time it takes to get that off, it is not | :36:20. | :36:26.
worth getting involved with. What about the smaller one? Again it is | :36:26. | :36:31.
different, the same principle. It goes through the steering wheel. | :36:31. | :36:38.
And the final item? It is a tracker. You can hide this anywhere in the | :36:38. | :36:45.
vehicle. They start at about 150 and got up to 300. The annual | :36:45. | :36:51.
subscription is about 100 a year. You are a many lover and Paul owns | :36:51. | :36:56.
the police car that we just sort. I'm sure you are devastated by the | :36:56. | :37:00.
theft. It is a bit concerning that you cannot leave the car anywhere | :37:00. | :37:09.
now. You cannot do it anymore. it is time to cast your eye over | :37:09. | :37:13.
our second batch of criminals caught on CCTV. Be warned, there is | :37:14. | :37:21.
some nasty stuff happening. Hinckley train station in Leicester | :37:21. | :37:25.
and a group have just got off this train, but something has upset one | :37:25. | :37:30.
of the women. One man decides talking is not enough and shoves | :37:30. | :37:35.
the guard backwards onto the train. There is a scuffle as his mates | :37:35. | :37:41.
tried to drag him away. The guard has been left shaken by the | :37:41. | :37:51.
:37:51. | :37:52. | ||
incident. If you know anything, please get in touch. We are in | :37:52. | :37:57.
Salisbury and the man in the brown coat walking towards us has already | :37:57. | :38:02.
been assaulted by someone up an argument in a car park, but his | :38:02. | :38:05.
attack it is still angry and confronts him again in the street. | :38:05. | :38:09.
He pushes him to the floor. He suffered bruising and cuts to his | :38:10. | :38:14.
face and was very shaken up. Can you help the police solve this | :38:15. | :38:22.
crime? It is a cold, January evening, and there is trouble at a | :38:22. | :38:28.
club in Basildon. This guy has been kicked out, but his night is not | :38:28. | :38:32.
over. He greets a stranger and then suddenly punches sent in the face. | :38:32. | :38:38.
He is knocked out cold. The man realises he has injured his victims | :38:38. | :38:43.
seriously, but he runs off as his victim is being looked after by the | :38:43. | :38:50.
bouncers. He suffered at lead on the brain. We need to catch this | :38:50. | :38:59.
violent thug. Do you recognise this man? He suffered bleeding on his | :38:59. | :39:07.
brain. You can call us or text us. The space in the text message is | :39:07. | :39:14.
important. You can also e-mail us. And you can call this number | :39:14. | :39:20.
anonymously. The lines are very busy, so please keep calling if you | :39:20. | :39:28.
cannot get through. The roadshow is all about the nuts | :39:28. | :39:33.
and bolts of everyday policing, but here on BBC One later this morning | :39:33. | :39:38.
there is a programme that will tell you more about one particular group, | :39:38. | :39:43.
the special constables, who give their time for free. | :39:43. | :39:48.
The majority volunteer on Friday nights and weekends. This means | :39:48. | :39:52.
patrolling high streets and town centres, on the front line of | :39:52. | :39:58.
Britain's binge drinking culture. Tonight in the battle to reclaim | :39:58. | :40:06.
the streets is 21 year-old special Sergeant Lewis Newton and his | :40:06. | :40:12.
colleague, web developer, Adam. you are caught in the city centre, | :40:12. | :40:17.
you will be arrested. Taking a stand against the lager louts is | :40:17. | :40:23.
the reason he decided to become a volunteer. Binge drinking and anti- | :40:23. | :40:26.
social behaviour, somebody needs to crack down on that and that is what | :40:26. | :40:36.
:40:36. | :40:38. | ||
I want to do and I will see that difference. Joining me now it is | :40:38. | :40:42.
Sam had Linton who has been a special since March last year. What | :40:42. | :40:47.
is your day job? I work at a nursing home as a care support | :40:47. | :40:54.
worker. Does that help you?Yes, during the day I help people with | :40:54. | :40:57.
learning disabilities and I get valuable experience which I can | :40:57. | :41:02.
bring into this. You do not look old enough, do people tell you | :41:02. | :41:10.
that? Yes, I get it all the time. I am only 21. What about the reaction | :41:10. | :41:15.
to this new job? What do you family and friends think I Stimac the a | :41:15. | :41:20.
all love it. They look at me and say, why are you doing this for | :41:20. | :41:26.
free? Absolutely enjoyed it. My mum is always knocking on the door and | :41:26. | :41:32.
asking me if I am OK. She is worried when you are out at night a | :41:32. | :41:37.
Stimac she does not do it so much now, but when I started. What is | :41:37. | :41:42.
the best thing for you? I love everything about it. And you get to | :41:42. | :41:48.
meet so many different people as well? Yes, it is just brilliant.We | :41:48. | :41:53.
wish you all the very best for your future. That programme is on at | :41:53. | :41:59.
11pm on BBC One. Last week we featured this 19-year- | :41:59. | :42:04.
old who police wanted to talk to in connection with a murder in south | :42:04. | :42:14.
London. The police are tracing a promising,Of enquiry. Plus we | :42:14. | :42:19.
featured this man who failed to turn up to court. The police are | :42:20. | :42:24.
following up a lead on that as well because of pure information. | :42:24. | :42:32.
What are you up to tomorrow? I am finding out how West Midlands | :42:32. | :42:36.
police are training a new generation of specialist stocks. | :42:36. | :42:40.
And on a more serious note, how they are tackling the link between | :42:40. | :42:48.
drugs and gangs. That is tomorrow. For more details on today's | :42:48. | :42:53.
programme had to the website. Finally, we are going to leave you | :42:53. | :42:58. |
