Good morning. We are live and ready for your calls. We are with the | :00:07. | :00:14.
police asking for your help to hunt down criminals near you. Today, | :00:15. | :00:19.
dozens of arson attacks have left this town struggling to survive. I | :00:20. | :00:23.
don't think the people who do this sort of thing think for one second | :00:24. | :00:28.
about the impact it has. And we all love CSI drama. Sian finds out what | :00:29. | :00:33.
it takes to become a real crime scene investigator. I couldn't see | :00:34. | :00:38.
anything at all before, but it looks like there are some prints on the | :00:39. | :00:40.
glass. This is Crimewatch Roadshow. Good morning and welcome to | :00:41. | :01:02.
Crimewatch Roadshow. Everyday, we are out and about with the bobbies | :01:03. | :01:05.
on the beat, helping them to collar criminals. Today: The mother home | :01:06. | :01:11.
alone when robbers came searching for gold. She had bangles on her | :01:12. | :01:21.
hands which were viciously taken. And how safe is the lock on your | :01:22. | :01:25.
front door? Could it be snapped open in less than 20 seconds? Keep | :01:26. | :01:30.
watching and you will find out. Today, Sian is in County Durham at a | :01:31. | :01:37.
real police Academy. Good morning. I am at the forensic | :01:38. | :01:42.
training centre in Harperley Hall, where officers come from all over | :01:43. | :01:45.
the UK to learn how to gather evidence from crime scenes. Later, I | :01:46. | :01:50.
will be having a few lessons myself. It is a fascinating place. But first | :01:51. | :01:58.
to the town of Stanley in County Durham which has suffered almost a | :01:59. | :02:01.
hundred arson attacks in the last six years. It takes a lot to recover | :02:02. | :02:12.
from what they have done. It has affected the whole community. | :02:13. | :02:21.
Stanley is an old-fashioned market town. Its high street is home to a | :02:22. | :02:29.
number of independent shop he does. Stanley is a lovely community. A lot | :02:30. | :02:34.
of the traders are family run businesses who employ friends and | :02:35. | :02:40.
family full of it is not really a large town, but it is our town. Two | :02:41. | :02:45.
weeks before Christmas last year, Stanley high Street was gearing up | :02:46. | :02:50.
for it easiest time of year. But the gift the town was about to receive | :02:51. | :02:56.
wasn't on anyone's Christmas list. In the early hours of Friday | :02:57. | :03:01.
morning, a wheelie bin in the town centre was set alight. It was the | :03:02. | :03:05.
latest in a long series of fires that have plagued the town in recent | :03:06. | :03:07.
years. The local fire brigade raced to the | :03:08. | :03:28.
scene. First to arrive was Crewe manager Graham Carr. We could | :03:29. | :03:34.
clearly see that it spreads to numerous buildings. The blaze was | :03:35. | :03:51.
captured on CCTV cameras. The heat and smoke were very disorientating. | :03:52. | :03:57.
That is what can cause problems. These buildings are susceptible to | :03:58. | :04:01.
partial collapse when you have a fire of this magnitude. This was a | :04:02. | :04:07.
very intense fire. The fire was so for atrocious that the structure of | :04:08. | :04:10.
the building was weakened. One firefighter was hit by a falling | :04:11. | :04:17.
chunk of masonry. One of the issues here is that people don't | :04:18. | :04:20.
understand, they think it might be a prank, a bit of fun to start a fire. | :04:21. | :04:25.
But they are putting people's lives at risk. | :04:26. | :04:29.
News of the blaze spread swiftly to local shopkeepers. I was informed | :04:30. | :04:35.
about the fire I text message from a friend of mine, and it simply red, I | :04:36. | :04:41.
think your shop is on fire. I grabbed my car keys and drove up to | :04:42. | :04:46.
the shop. It took 42 firefighters and eight | :04:47. | :04:47.
fire engines to bring It took 42 firefighters and eight | :04:48. | :04:52.
under control, and all because of one act of arson. There were three | :04:53. | :05:01.
of us had premises all stuck together watching the fire. We all | :05:02. | :05:07.
had floods of tears, umpteen cups of coffee. I couldn't stand and watch. | :05:08. | :05:16.
It was so sad to see that everything was gone, everything was ruined. | :05:17. | :05:18.
Ceilings had collapsed. It was was gone, everything was ruined. | :05:19. | :05:24.
I realised nothing could be salvaged. Over the past five years, | :05:25. | :05:29.
Stanley has been struck by arsonists 87 times. Two fires were serious | :05:30. | :05:35.
enough to destroy parts of the town. The local community have left | :05:36. | :05:40.
struggling to pick up the pieces. What it does is it has the effect of | :05:41. | :05:45.
making towns like Stanley, which were once thriving market towns, | :05:46. | :05:52.
basically into a ghost town. A chap came in the other day, you hadn't | :05:53. | :05:56.
been in for months, and everybody was under the impression that these | :05:57. | :06:01.
buildings are no longer occupied. I don't think the people that do this | :06:02. | :06:04.
thing for one second about the impact it has, not just on the day | :06:05. | :06:09.
but long term on the reputation of the whole area. In one fell swoop, | :06:10. | :06:17.
but long term on the reputation of like Stanley. It is not a victimless | :06:18. | :06:25.
crime. This really has rocked the community, and TI Gavin Heckles is | :06:26. | :06:28.
crime. This really has rocked the with me now. A shocking statistic, | :06:29. | :06:31.
this one. 87 deliberate fires since 2009. Any deliberate fire is | :06:32. | :06:37.
this one. 87 deliberate fires since ludicrous, but in this case, there | :06:38. | :06:39.
have been 28 separate fires since 2012, this fire being the most | :06:40. | :06:45.
serious of those. In November last year there was a fire at a local | :06:46. | :06:48.
Chinese restaurant. That was accidental. But they have been a | :06:49. | :06:54.
number of wheelie bin fires, leading up to this really destructive one. | :06:55. | :06:59.
And with regards to this very serious fire, any idea when it was | :07:00. | :07:06.
started? We know it started after 5am on December 13. There were | :07:07. | :07:09.
delivery drivers and people starting their working day around the area, | :07:10. | :07:12.
and we believe they may well have seen some will stop how was it | :07:13. | :07:19.
started, then? A wheelie bin has been moved towards the back of the | :07:20. | :07:22.
building and it has been ignited, and the fats and packaging caught | :07:23. | :07:27.
fire really quickly and spread throughout the building. The fire | :07:28. | :07:31.
was well publicised in the local area, and Stanley remains one of the | :07:32. | :07:36.
safest places to live in County Durham and Darlington. It was | :07:37. | :07:42.
publicised on local media and social networking, so we are keen to hear | :07:43. | :07:46.
from anybody who knows anything. If you can help, get in touch with us | :07:47. | :07:52.
as a matter of urgency. For centuries, churches of stunned | :07:53. | :07:55.
at the heart of every town and village. But with dwindling | :07:56. | :07:58.
congregations, many of our most historic buildings are becoming easy | :07:59. | :08:04.
pickings for thieves. Dr Neal Ruch -- Dr Neal Rushton, theft from | :08:05. | :08:13.
churches is becoming a real problem, isn't it? Yes, it is. Lead and | :08:14. | :08:19.
copper from rooms has been the main problem, but over the last year or | :08:20. | :08:22.
so, the fixtures and fittings, things inside the church. It seems | :08:23. | :08:30.
that the problem is moving to the inside. There are couple of cases | :08:31. | :08:33.
you want our viewers to help you with today. Talk me through the | :08:34. | :08:43.
first one. This is holy Trinity Church in a lovely part of North | :08:44. | :08:47.
Devon. It has a screen with these panels attached. Prices, unique, | :08:48. | :08:53.
late medieval religious art. And as you can see, two of them awhile ago | :08:54. | :08:58.
were stolen. They were cut out and probably stolen to order. It is | :08:59. | :09:02.
unbelievable that someone would steal that. And they are | :09:03. | :09:06.
irreplaceable, you would be able to go out and buy another one. You want | :09:07. | :09:10.
them back and you want to know who has done it? It is devastating for | :09:11. | :09:15.
the local community, and a terrible upset. There is another one as well, | :09:16. | :09:21.
this time in Essex. This is from Halsted in Essex, a processional | :09:22. | :09:25.
cross which would go ahead of processions during services. It is | :09:26. | :09:29.
about 50 centimetres high, very heavy, a very distinctive Agnus Dei | :09:30. | :09:44.
printed across the cross. We think they have been stolen to order, but | :09:45. | :09:49.
where they have gone, we don't know. It is a very distinctive brass | :09:50. | :09:56.
thing, and you want it back? We certainly do. Thank you for joining | :09:57. | :10:01.
us today. If you have any information on these thefts, please | :10:02. | :10:06.
do get in touch. Time now for a mysterious case, but don't worry, we | :10:07. | :10:12.
have a crack team on it. It is almost closing time travel | :10:13. | :10:16.
agent in Durham, and inside, the sales assistant at dealing with the | :10:17. | :10:20.
last customer of the day. In the street outside, two men are looking | :10:21. | :10:26.
on. The staff are about to meet some people who certainly aren't looking | :10:27. | :10:26.
for a holiday. Luckily, that wasn't a real robbery, | :10:27. | :11:01.
if you hadn't guessed already. This is one of a number of crime scenes | :11:02. | :11:05.
used to teach students the skills they need to recover evidence, and | :11:06. | :11:12.
today, I'm going to have a go. Based outside Durham, the college is | :11:13. | :11:16.
world renowned as a centre of teaching excellence, so before I am | :11:17. | :11:19.
let loose on the crime scene, I will need to go back to school. Welcome | :11:20. | :11:24.
to the classroom. Before you can go out and do your own scenes of crime, | :11:25. | :11:32.
I need to teach you some basic CSI techniques. First we will look at | :11:33. | :11:37.
fingerprinting. You need to check if it is a rough service. That is | :11:38. | :11:46.
rough, you can feel indentations. And you need to think about if it is | :11:47. | :11:50.
porous or nonporous. If it is porous, dusting for fingerprints | :11:51. | :12:02.
needs to happen quickly. If it is not porous, I can fingerprinting at | :12:03. | :12:07.
the scene. I can put some fingerprints down like that. Take | :12:08. | :12:13.
the brush and dust along the edge of this bottle. Can you see the | :12:14. | :12:20.
fingerprints coming up? They would be fine for an identification. Well | :12:21. | :12:28.
done. This is lessened two. Burglars cannot fly. There will be footwear | :12:29. | :12:36.
marks within the scene. So this test shows me how to find footprint that | :12:37. | :12:40.
might not be obvious to the naked eye using foil. I will pass an | :12:41. | :12:42.
electric charge through it, turn this on. It is causing the dust | :12:43. | :12:48.
particles from the paper to stick to the silver foil, and I will pull | :12:49. | :12:52.
that up and it will have been transferred. So you will be able to | :12:53. | :12:58.
see this here, and if I show you this lighting technique, I just | :12:59. | :13:01.
picked this up, and you can clearly see the footprint. This is really | :13:02. | :13:06.
good evidence for collecting samples. | :13:07. | :13:11.
So these are some of the things I need to use. | :13:12. | :13:18.
I am all kitted up and beginning to feel the part, is of the first thing | :13:19. | :13:24.
I have to do is gather some information. To start off with, I am | :13:25. | :13:32.
going to photograph the scene. There are some cartridges on the floor | :13:33. | :13:37.
here. I need to record thing I see that I think is important. | :13:38. | :13:45.
Photography over, I now think I need to start thinking about what I would | :13:46. | :13:50.
want to gather. And I have just noticed now I have | :13:51. | :14:00.
come over here and there are a couple of cigarette buts. Evidence | :14:01. | :14:03.
that can't be tested couple of cigarette buts. Evidence | :14:04. | :14:06.
that can't be at the scene has to be sent to the lab for analysis. | :14:07. | :14:10.
I am going to get on with doing some fingerprinting. I think I can see | :14:11. | :14:20.
something up in this corner. I couldn't see anything at all before, | :14:21. | :14:23.
but it looks like there are some prints on the glass, which if | :14:24. | :14:28.
someone ran in a put their hands on there, it might look like that. | :14:29. | :14:33.
It is time for all of the evidence I have gathered to go to the lab for | :14:34. | :14:36.
testing. All I can do now is wait for the results will stop | :14:37. | :14:42.
it is all coming back to me now. I did give it my best shot. Ian | :14:43. | :14:46.
Wilson, you are training here. How did I do? You did very well, but the | :14:47. | :14:52.
scene tells us the story. You did capture that story, but let's have a | :14:53. | :14:55.
look at the photographs of some of the things you did do quite so well. | :14:56. | :15:00.
We have the photographs here. I wasn't absolutely sure that I did | :15:01. | :15:04.
have the camera in focus, because normally and the other side of the | :15:05. | :15:08.
camera. Take us through the photographs that I did act fully | :15:09. | :15:17.
managed to capture here. Well, you've got some nice close-up views | :15:18. | :15:19.
of various aspects of the evidence. you've got some nice close-up views | :15:20. | :15:26.
You did actually recover a potential but where Mark, but you were a bit | :15:27. | :15:31.
quick in putting that evidence into a bag. Perhaps that might have | :15:32. | :15:39.
compromised it a bit. You had a piece of paper with a hair on it. | :15:40. | :15:47.
You used tweezers and then you went on to recover other items with the | :15:48. | :15:50.
same tweezers. That could cause a problem later on. It might be | :15:51. | :15:53.
necessary to prove where the problem later on. It might be | :15:54. | :16:00.
of DNA came from. So by using tweezers twice, it is compromised. | :16:01. | :16:04.
So definitely tweezers twice, it is compromised. | :16:05. | :16:07.
do! Now, there can be many tweezers twice, it is compromised. | :16:08. | :16:11.
scenes related to one incident, so we had the armed robber taking place | :16:12. | :16:16.
in there, and there was a getaway car. Normally a different team would | :16:17. | :16:23.
be looking at those cars so there would not be any evidence | :16:24. | :16:27.
contamination. Tom, you are going to talk me through how you would | :16:28. | :16:34.
examine the car. We would initially do a visual exam using white light. | :16:35. | :16:39.
And now I will show you the high-intensity light. It causes | :16:40. | :16:43.
fluorescence. The point is to see things we wouldn't normally see, | :16:44. | :16:51.
things like finger marks. Blood does not show up but the background does, | :16:52. | :16:58.
so it is ideal. This is a speculative search, if you like. It | :16:59. | :17:02.
is nondestructive so it allows us to do things afterwards. We get mended | :17:03. | :17:08.
treatments such as powder suspension. And we need specialist | :17:09. | :17:17.
equipment. Yes, if everybody could put on these goggles, we need them | :17:18. | :17:21.
for help and safety because the light is so bright it could brighten | :17:22. | :17:30.
-- it could damage your eyes. It looks different with the different | :17:31. | :17:36.
cameras. It does, one camera does not have the filter on it, so it | :17:37. | :17:42.
does not show up. We have a yellow filter, and that cancels out the | :17:43. | :17:47.
bright light and just shows up the fluorescence. So we can see some | :17:48. | :17:51.
kind of contaminant on the door handle and the brain. That is clear. | :17:52. | :18:03.
Thank you very much. Now, time to look at some wanted faces. | :18:04. | :18:31.
First up today is Thomas Jacob. He was charged with | :18:32. | :18:35.
making threats to kill, but failed to turn up in court | :18:36. | :18:37.
and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Originally from | :18:38. | :18:40.
Sri Lanka, the 32-year-old has links to West London, but | :18:41. | :18:41.
where is he now? Now let's take a look at this pair. | :18:42. | :18:44.
24-year-old Aidarus Yusef. And this man, Mohamed Ali. | :18:45. | :18:46.

The address is on your screen now. Still to come: A collection which | :19:34. | :19:43.
meant the world to its owner. She adored it. Now, back to January, and | :19:44. | :19:52.
a vicious assault which left a man seriously injured. | :19:53. | :19:56.
I'm joined now by DI Mark Dimelow from Cleveland Police - Mark, | :19:57. | :19:59.
you're still trying to find out who carried out this attack. | :20:00. | :20:02.
On Thursday 30th January at approximately 7.30 | :20:03. | :20:05.
in the evening Gerard was sitting on a bench alongside Acklam Road in | :20:06. | :20:08.
Middlesbrough - he sits there often and is known to passers-by.Witnesses | :20:09. | :20:11.
saw a male wearing a black balaclava and a boiler suit running towards | :20:12. | :20:15.
the bench, where Gerard was sitting, holding what appeared to be | :20:16. | :20:17.
a cricket or baseball bat in his right hand. | :20:18. | :20:20.
The male repeatedly strikes Gerard across his body including his face. | :20:21. | :20:25.
But that wasn't the end of the attack, was it? | :20:26. | :20:31.
No, he walks away but then actually comes back to | :20:32. | :20:34.
strike him with the bat another five times using all the force he could. | :20:35. | :20:42.
Now, you have some CCTV from a nearby street taken | :20:43. | :20:44.
And we can see that it shows a car pulling up, and a man getting | :20:45. | :20:53.
We then see another person running in towards that car and then back | :20:54. | :21:00.
It is possibly a blue Renault Meganne with a 53 plate. | :21:01. | :21:20.
We believe this could be a woman and that she has vital information, | :21:21. | :21:26.
and we'd like to ask them to come forward. | :21:27. | :21:30.
Do you have a description of the offender? | :21:31. | :21:33.
He is about 6'2", stocky build, wearing an old style mechanic suit | :21:34. | :21:36.
like a blue boiler suit with high viz stripes on it like this one. | :21:37. | :21:41.
And Gerard's injuries were very serious? | :21:42. | :21:43.
He had serious brain injuries - he was placed in an induced coma | :21:44. | :21:46.
and he will have long term problems due to this assault. | :21:47. | :21:50.
Well, there's a lot of information there - if it's | :21:51. | :21:53.
Now, we all like to feel safe in our own home, | :21:54. | :21:59.
but for our next victim, a robbery that took place one Monday morning | :22:00. | :22:03.
She's too scared to be interviewed so her husband | :22:04. | :22:06.
Early in the morning in a Middlesbrough suburb, a local GP was | :22:07. | :22:25.
at his surgery. I left home at 7:50am and got there at eight | :22:26. | :22:30.
o'clock. I was expecting to come back at 1pm. My wife and I go out | :22:31. | :22:35.
for lunch on that day and pick up the children from school together. | :22:36. | :22:41.
He has been a GP here for almost 40 years. He and his wife have brought | :22:42. | :22:48.
up their family in the town. My wife is very petite, smaller than five | :22:49. | :22:54.
feet, she was very happy-go-lucky, always laughing and smiling. She was | :22:55. | :22:59.
central at any party, always laughing. While Doctor Mohammed was | :23:00. | :23:05.
at work, his wife was doing some housework. She was expecting a visit | :23:06. | :23:09.
from her brother, says she was not surprised to hear a knock at the | :23:10. | :23:16.
door. A young chap with a baby face, about 15 or 16 knocked at the | :23:17. | :23:21.
door. Because this was previously a nursing home, she thought he was | :23:22. | :23:27.
looking for a job. Thinking the boy was an innocent caller, she opened | :23:28. | :23:33.
the door. Suddenly, a man in a balaclava burst into the house. As | :23:34. | :23:41.
soon as she saw the other guy, she started screaming. Then he punched | :23:42. | :23:47.
her. The force of the punch was so hard it broke her nose. He then | :23:48. | :23:55.
grabbed her headscarf and forced her downwards. They kept shouting at | :23:56. | :24:00.
her, saying, don't look at me. Whenever she looked up, she would be | :24:01. | :24:05.
hit by the man in the balaclava. Obviously, she is very traumatised, | :24:06. | :24:11.
she is screaming, crying, saying, leave me alone. They force into the | :24:12. | :24:17.
living room the address. The men eventually explain why they are | :24:18. | :24:22.
there. They say they want money and jewellery. Frustrated by her cries, | :24:23. | :24:30.
they show a black bag. They told her it contained a knife and a gun and | :24:31. | :24:34.
threatened to use them if she did not keep quiet. Then, they stole | :24:35. | :24:39.
money from her handbag and dragged her from her house. They forced her | :24:40. | :24:43.
to kneel before ripping off her jewellery. She had some bangles on | :24:44. | :24:52.
her hands which were viciously taken as though the hands didn't exist. | :24:53. | :24:57.
They scratched the back of her hands. While they discussed their | :24:58. | :25:01.
next move, she saw an opportunity to escape. She decided to make a run | :25:02. | :25:07.
for it and get into the bedroom so she could lock the door and call the | :25:08. | :25:12.
police. But they were too fast. As she tried to close the door, they | :25:13. | :25:19.
barged in. She was calling my name and the guy in the balaclava said, | :25:20. | :25:23.
we know your husband is not here, we know he is at the surgery this time. | :25:24. | :25:28.
She kept shouting and then he punched her. The robbers made her | :25:29. | :25:36.
empty out her jewellery boxes before forcing her down on the bed. They | :25:37. | :25:40.
helped themselves to over ?20,000 of valuables. Still not content with | :25:41. | :25:48.
their haul, they spotted another target. They told her, open the safe | :25:49. | :25:57.
for us. She informs them she is not able to open it, only her husband | :25:58. | :26:01.
can do it, but they tell her, if she does not do it, they will chop a | :26:02. | :26:08.
hands-off. She had no choice. They helped themselves to ?15,000 of | :26:09. | :26:15.
cash. They make their escape, locking a frightened, beaten and | :26:16. | :26:20.
bruised woman in her own room. Hello, police. | :26:21. | :26:37.
bruised woman in her own room. and locked me in? Since the | :26:38. | :26:38.
incident, she has become very and locked me in? Since the | :26:39. | :26:42.
withdrawn. Quite often, she is sitting there and she will start | :26:43. | :26:46.
withdrawn. Quite often, she is crying. At night, | :26:47. | :26:49.
withdrawn. Quite often, she is screaming and crying. The whole life | :26:50. | :26:52.
of the family has completely been turned upside down. My wife doesn't | :26:53. | :27:01.
want to live here. There is always somebody with her, we nevertheless | :27:02. | :27:05.
leave her on her own, but she still does not want to live here because | :27:06. | :27:15.
of what has happened. Paul, this was a vicious attack on a woman by | :27:16. | :27:18.
yourself in her own home. Do you think | :27:19. | :27:33.
The criminals got away with thousands of pounds | :27:34. | :27:50.
and several items of jewellery - tell us about the jewellery. | :27:51. | :27:53.
The pieces of jewellery that were stolen were of great | :27:54. | :27:57.
One set was especially made for her wedding day. | :27:58. | :28:07.
The second set was given to her as a gift from her husband's family. | :28:08. | :28:10.
Both sets consist of a headpiece, a necklace - often known | :28:11. | :28:13.
as a tikka - and earrings - both stolen and irreplaceable. | :28:14. | :28:16.
The victim also had 12 bangles stolen. | :28:17. | :28:17.
What do you think the robbers will have done with it? | :28:18. | :28:28.
The robbers could have tried to sell them in local jewellery stores. | :28:29. | :28:32.
If someone has bought or been offered it, | :28:33. | :28:34.
Obviously the currency may have been sold or traded as local shops. | :28:35. | :28:53.
How can the public help, do you have a description of the perpetrators? | :28:54. | :28:56.
We are looking for two males, one young white boy about 16, | :28:57. | :28:59.
with a round baby face with blondish hair and was wearing | :29:00. | :29:01.
The second male is older, he wore dark clothing, | :29:02. | :29:05.
a balaclava and as we saw in the films, yellow washing up gloves. | :29:06. | :29:25.
If anybody has found gloves similar to that around 10:30am on the 9th of | :29:26. | :29:31.
October last year, please get in touch. | :29:32. | :29:35.
It's worth pointing out that the family no longer keeps cash or | :29:36. | :29:38.
And a reward of up to ?5,000 is being offered by the victim for any | :29:39. | :29:42.
information that leads to the arrest conviction of those responsible. | :29:43. | :29:46.
Anyone with information can pass it on anonymously by contacting | :29:47. | :29:48.
The burglars in the site definitely have a nose for crime. They target a | :29:49. | :30:13.
high street pharmacy in South Wales town steal posh perfume, and these | :30:14. | :30:17.
guys won't be caught sleeping on the job. Having kicked in a glass door | :30:18. | :30:26.
panel, they use a duvet to bag 8500 pounds of fragrance. Recognise this | :30:27. | :30:39.
pair? Then pick up the phone? The victim in our next film is both | :30:40. | :30:44.
brave and lucky. He has just finished serving a woman and a child | :30:45. | :30:47.
in this Greenwich shop went to wooded men walking. One club is on | :30:48. | :30:52.
to the counter, but the shopkeeper fights back. During the chaos, a | :30:53. | :30:57.
mother flees with a baby in a pushchair. The struggle between the | :30:58. | :30:59.
two men continues until the shop Youga throws him off. With that, the | :31:00. | :31:05.
robber leaves. At his accomplice isn't going yet, and stands by the | :31:06. | :31:08.
door waving a knife at another staff member. The shopkeeper confronts | :31:09. | :31:13.
him, then walks calmly back behind the counter to make a phone call. | :31:14. | :31:18.
The man doesn't hang on to find out if used Eileen 999. Detectives say | :31:19. | :31:24.
the raiders left with nothing and need your help to identify them. -- | :31:25. | :31:29.
the man doesn't hang on to find out if he is dialling 999. | :31:30. | :31:36.
It seems the man walking into this Hampshire shop can't get enough of | :31:37. | :31:44.
health and beauty products. He steals ?300 of razors, razor blades | :31:45. | :31:48.
and cosmetic creams in five separate days. The store's camera film him | :31:49. | :31:52.
visiting the same aisle again and again, taking handfuls of items from | :31:53. | :31:56.
the shelves and putting them in his basket before making a quick exit. | :31:57. | :32:01.
On one trip, he even takes the basket home. | :32:02. | :32:04.
If you recognise any of that light-fingered lot, | :32:05. | :32:06.
Give us a call, or send us a text - you need to type | :32:07. | :32:11.
in CW then leave a space to make sure your message gets through. | :32:12. | :32:14.
Now, if you have a lock on your door a little like this, then you need to | :32:15. | :32:26.
pay attention, because you could be at risk of a particular type of | :32:27. | :32:31.
raking known as locks napping. Neal, good morning. What is this technique | :32:32. | :32:48.
known as lock snapping? It is an easy way to get into property. And | :32:49. | :32:52.
this is a particular problem in North Yorkshire? Yes, it was 40% of | :32:53. | :32:58.
all burglaries. But it is dropped down to 25%, but it is spreading. We | :32:59. | :33:04.
can see how simple this is. We are not going to show exactly what they | :33:05. | :33:07.
do, but you have pretended to be a burglar, and we have got you on film | :33:08. | :33:12.
now, and we're going to try new. While you are having a go at this | :33:13. | :33:16.
door here, you don't have any professional locksmith tools or | :33:17. | :33:20.
anything? It is just basic tools you could get from your shed. And I am | :33:21. | :33:26.
told it is going to be much less than minutes before you get in. | :33:27. | :33:31.
There you go, 15 seconds. That is exactly how a burglar could do it. | :33:32. | :33:39.
But it is not that bad because we can do subbing about this quite | :33:40. | :33:44.
easily. We have been working with manufacturers on the new standards | :33:45. | :33:53.
of coming out, and the new 000 seven three star. Yes, the one with these | :33:54. | :34:03.
three stars on the top, and this is what they would look like. I don't | :34:04. | :34:08.
know if we can see that on camera. Just on their other top by my finger | :34:09. | :34:13.
there are three stars you can see. That is what you are looking for. | :34:14. | :34:16.
People don't need to change the entire door, do they? They don't | :34:17. | :34:22.
need to change the locking mechanism or the handle. Roughly how much | :34:23. | :34:30.
would it cost? Around ?50. And it could keep the much safer. I think a | :34:31. | :34:38.
lot of people will be going to check their locks. | :34:39. | :34:42.
And if you're worried about your locks, have a look at our website. | :34:43. | :34:46.
Well, we've moved outside now into the grounds of the Forensic Training | :34:47. | :34:51.
Centre where there's what appears to be a very busy crime scene. | :34:52. | :34:54.
Paul Dearing leads the forensic trainers here | :34:55. | :34:56.
We have set up a serious assault scene with a path up to the crime | :34:57. | :35:14.
scene so we can safely access it. We have a tent in the background that | :35:15. | :35:17.
is preserving some of the fragile evidence that we might lose | :35:18. | :35:22.
otherwise. We see those quite often on the news, and that is because | :35:23. | :35:25.
there is something going on in there quite often. The purpose for the | :35:26. | :35:37.
tent is to give us the opportunity to recover three-dimensional | :35:38. | :35:41.
footwear marks. The two main methods are photography, which one half of | :35:42. | :35:43.
the group are doing, and ultimately casting footprint will. The | :35:44. | :35:53.
footprint can clearly be seen in the mud. What we do is mix three agents | :35:54. | :35:59.
together, and that is poured into the mark. Gravity helps it to sink | :36:00. | :36:04.
down, and it will give out all of the relevant detail so that we can | :36:05. | :36:09.
later recover it, and that will then get submitted to the forensic | :36:10. | :36:11.
laboratory where they can analyse the mark, get as much intelligence | :36:12. | :36:22.
from it is humanly possible. Size and direction might even help. We | :36:23. | :36:26.
get a multitude of information from these marks. If we fail to take | :36:27. | :36:31.
these casts, we lose that information. And this is the cast | :36:32. | :36:38.
that has been completed, isn't it? This is an excellent one, with all | :36:39. | :36:42.
the real detail that has been brought up with the medium we have | :36:43. | :36:46.
used. The indentation, pressure, there is even somewhere on the outs | :36:47. | :36:51.
wide there. And you are trying to get inside the mind of the criminal | :36:52. | :36:55.
here, because this scene is important, and I guess outside, not | :36:56. | :36:59.
just the stuff in the lamb for the students. We teach people how to | :37:00. | :37:10.
recover evidence, but understanding that environmental areas might | :37:11. | :37:16.
restrict the evidence, that gives real understanding to their | :37:17. | :37:19.
training. And how do you find it is going? I | :37:20. | :37:23.
have come from South Yorkshire, and I think it is fantastic. You get the | :37:24. | :37:27.
theory in the classroom, but then you get the chance to come out and | :37:28. | :37:31.
do a real-life simulation and butcher article skills into | :37:32. | :37:38.
practice. Thank you, it is the fascinating to see -- put your | :37:39. | :37:46.
practical skills into practice. Now we go to talk to a family left | :37:47. | :37:51.
devastated by the loss of their precious heirlooms. | :37:52. | :37:56.
It was a very sad day when we lost our mum. | :37:57. | :38:03.
When Patrick smothered died, he was left with fond memories and a | :38:04. | :38:06.
precious collection of jewellery and porcelain. She took pride and joy | :38:07. | :38:10.
and stuff. Her pride porcelain. She took pride and joy | :38:11. | :38:20.
Crown Derby collection. Plates, cut is, tea sets. There was a kettle is, | :38:21. | :38:32.
of horse-drawn wagon, flower jars. Bowls, dishes. Royal Crown Derby is | :38:33. | :38:41.
one of bingo was my oldest producers of fine china. Their delicate | :38:42. | :38:45.
designs and world heritage make them popular collectors items. They are | :38:46. | :38:49.
particularly prized by the travelling community. She adored it. | :38:50. | :38:58.
She would sit drinking a cup of tea watching the Cabinet, looking at her | :38:59. | :38:59.
things. But not everyone who collect this | :39:00. | :39:10.
high-end crockery is willing to pay for it. On March the 15th, Patrick | :39:11. | :39:16.
and his family were out celebrating his son's birthday. While they were | :39:17. | :39:21.
enjoying the party, thieves were breaking into their house. First, | :39:22. | :39:25.
they tried the conservatory. They then fetched a ladder and Rob came | :39:26. | :39:30.
through an upstairs window. Once inside, they wreaked havoc, grabbing | :39:31. | :39:37.
cash, jewellery, a tablet computer and all of Patrick's mother's much | :39:38. | :39:43.
loved Crown Derby collection. They even used the family sheets to carry | :39:44. | :39:47.
it all away. They left with a haul worth between ?30,000-50,000. The | :39:48. | :39:58.
house was just ransacked. They ripped all of the blinds down, | :39:59. | :40:06.
everything. Mud all over. It was a terrible experience. The thieves had | :40:07. | :40:11.
even stolen earrings left to Patrick's wife by his mother. My | :40:12. | :40:17.
granny bought them for my mum, and she passed on down to my wife. She | :40:18. | :40:24.
did say to my wife, one day, when I leave this earth, when I get buried, | :40:25. | :40:33.
you wear them earrings. For Patrick and the family, the loss of their | :40:34. | :40:35.
mother's things has been heartbreaking. I was distraught, to | :40:36. | :40:42.
tell you the truth. Devastated. You never think it is going to happen to | :40:43. | :40:50.
you. DC Anthony Kent is with me now. The things taken were so precious to | :40:51. | :40:53.
the family. What exactly was stolen? Quite a large amount of tea | :40:54. | :41:03.
was stolen. Part of that collection is some crockery which is Royal | :41:04. | :41:11.
Crown Derby, Old Imari Japan style. It has a value of between ?25,000 | :41:12. | :41:17.
and ?50,000. There was various amounts of money stolen, jewellery | :41:18. | :41:23.
including a solid gold bangle, some American dollar earrings, and an | :41:24. | :41:29.
iPad. Do you think there was more than one person involved? I believe | :41:30. | :41:33.
there was, given the quantity of property that has been taken from | :41:34. | :41:40.
the address will stop there was possibly a waiting vehicle nearby. | :41:41. | :41:45.
So how can the public help? If they can contact us if they know anything | :41:46. | :41:52.
about the robbery. The people responsible for it, or if they have | :41:53. | :41:56.
been offered the property for sale, they could contact us to help us | :41:57. | :41:59.
reunite Patrick with his mother's belongings. | :42:00. | :42:04.
A quick update for you now. Detectives following new leads after | :42:05. | :42:08.
we showed you the theft of a builders van containing valuable, | :42:09. | :42:10.
and bust of the dog in North Yorkshire. A number of you phoning | :42:11. | :42:16.
saying it was a Toyota land cruiser spotted in the area, not a | :42:17. | :42:23.
Mitsubishi. Plus potential new leads on the CCTV yesterday of | :42:24. | :42:26.
passengers' luggage being stolen from a train, and police had | :42:27. | :42:29.
positive information come through on one of our Wanted Faces. So, thanks | :42:30. | :42:36.
for that. Sian, where will you be tomorrow? | :42:37. | :42:40.
We are off to Seaham Harbour Marine A, where we have a sporting theme | :42:41. | :42:45.
going on. Olympic medallist Rhona Martin is appealing for your help to | :42:46. | :42:50.
try to find her gold medal. Also a huge increase in the amount of | :42:51. | :42:53.
thefts of fishing tackle across the UK. We will be looking at that, and | :42:54. | :42:59.
a new scheme to foil those thieves. Thank you, Sian. If you would like | :43:00. | :43:03.
to watch any of the CCTV featured in today's programme again, heads our | :43:04. | :43:09.
website, and you will also find details of our Wanted Faces. I will | :43:10. | :43:13.
leave you with them now, because somebody out there knows who would | :43:14. | :43:16.
where they are. Take care. | :43:17. | :43:19. |
