precious metal? It means a lot to me and my family, | :00:21. | :00:24.
it means a lot to the whole of Britain. The Mountain rescue team on | :00:25. | :00:36.
call 24 hours a day. And how could anyone steal bikes from servicemen | :00:37. | :00:40.
fighting their way back from injury? You are watching Crimewatch | :00:41. | :00:42.
Roadshow. Roadshow! We are live, and we need | :00:43. | :01:06.
your help to catch crooks and get them behind bars. On today's show, | :01:07. | :01:11.
the crime wave affecting anglers up and down the country. | :01:12. | :01:14.
the crime wave affecting anglers up and A lot of gear, ?40,000 worth of | :01:15. | :01:20.
stuff stolen. Your heart just sinks. And how hanging baskets are helping | :01:21. | :01:24.
keep kids in Durham on the straight and narrow. | :01:25. | :01:32.
Today Sian is by the sea in County Durham, beautiful Seaham Harbour | :01:33. | :01:36.
Marina. Morning, Rav. Sport is the theme | :01:37. | :01:40.
today, and we will be hearing from young footballers, anglers and the | :01:41. | :01:44.
Help For Heroes triathletes, who have all been the victims of crime. | :01:45. | :01:51.
First, though, we had to a small museum in Scotland where an | :01:52. | :01:54.
exhibition meant to inspire visitors with mementos of sporting glory lead | :01:55. | :01:57.
instead to a devastating there. Rhona Martin, one last delivery for | :01:58. | :02:09.
Olympic gold. It needs to be absolutely perfect... Rhona Martin | :02:10. | :02:12.
put curling on the map in the UK with a dramatic win at the 2002 | :02:13. | :02:20.
Winter Olympics. Thankfully it came off, the sweepers judged it well, | :02:21. | :02:25.
and we won, it was a great feeling. It made her a national hero. The | :02:26. | :02:32.
Olympic champions and gold medallists, Team Great Britain! | :02:33. | :02:37.
She's still involved, coaching the Great Britain team. It gives me | :02:38. | :02:41.
great satisfaction to think that my win in salt lake city and my team's | :02:42. | :02:47.
win, with all of us visiting schools, that is what is important, | :02:48. | :02:54.
inspiring the next generation. So when a small museum in Dumfries as | :02:55. | :03:01.
Rhona if she could help with an exhibition they were planning, she | :03:02. | :03:04.
agreed. They asked, have I got any Olympic memorabilia I could give | :03:05. | :03:08.
them? I said, yes, and they said, could we borrow your medal? I said, | :03:09. | :03:14.
yes, OK, they said, it would be in a reinforced glass case, don't worry. | :03:15. | :03:18.
I gave them all the memorabilia and the medal. The exhibition opens to | :03:19. | :03:24.
the public back in April. Everybody remembers when Rhona at that final | :03:25. | :03:30.
curling stone, and for people to be able to come and see the medal that | :03:31. | :03:34.
she won as a result was very special. | :03:35. | :03:40.
Every day the museum closes its doors to the public at five o'clock. | :03:41. | :03:49.
But on Wednesday the 30th of April, a gang of thieves were determined to | :03:50. | :03:53.
pay and out of hours visits to the exhibition. -- visit. Jimmy on their | :03:54. | :04:00.
way through the door, they broke into the museum. The heavy duty | :04:01. | :04:06.
security shutter wasn't strong enough to deter the criminals. Once | :04:07. | :04:13.
inside, they knew exactly where to go. They smashed their way through | :04:14. | :04:23.
the heavily reinforced glass of the display Cabinets, grabbing valuable | :04:24. | :04:29.
historical artefacts. Then they spotted an even bigger prize, | :04:30. | :04:36.
Rhona's Olympic gold medal. The whole burglary took just one minute | :04:37. | :04:43.
and 40 seconds. This really was a smash and grab. I walked into the | :04:44. | :04:49.
gallery where the medal had been and all the other items that were | :04:50. | :04:53.
stolen, and it was just appalling, I couldn't believe how much blast | :04:54. | :04:56.
there was, how much damage had been done. -- glass. The staff were just | :04:57. | :05:02.
devastated, I know one or two people were in tears. A colleague and I | :05:03. | :05:06.
went home after we had done what we could that evening, and neither of | :05:07. | :05:13.
us could sleep. Within hours, Rhona was informed of the break-in. Before | :05:14. | :05:18.
they even said what had happened, I knew in my heart what they were | :05:19. | :05:23.
going to tell me. So it was a disappointing blow, because curling | :05:24. | :05:27.
has had a great year, the exhibition was fantastic to promote our great | :05:28. | :05:31.
sport, and then all of a sudden I thought, oh no, I've just lost my | :05:32. | :05:38.
medal. In total, ?34,000 worth of items were stolen. The loss of 2002 | :05:39. | :05:43.
medal has left the Rhona devastated. This theft of a medal, my medal, to | :05:44. | :05:50.
me it means a lot, it means a lot to my family, to the whole of Britain. | :05:51. | :05:57.
DI Bryan Lee from Police Scotland is leading this investigation, the | :05:58. | :06:04.
value put on the items taken in all is some ?30,000, but Rhona's Olympic | :06:05. | :06:11.
gold medal is priceless. Yes, the Olympic Committee destroys each | :06:12. | :06:14.
mould after the games, so it is impossible to replace the medal. And | :06:15. | :06:19.
this happens just 12 days after the exhibition opened, so Rhona's medal | :06:20. | :06:24.
was taken but other items as well. Yes, other items, a Royal Caledonian | :06:25. | :06:32.
curling medal which belonged to Hannah Fleming, a 1924 Olympic gold | :06:33. | :06:36.
medal, a number of other medals, and also a Burgess casket and a | :06:37. | :06:42.
provost's chain. Sewing number of very distinctive items taken. You do | :06:43. | :06:48.
have some CCTV, what does that tell you? It two persons entering the | :06:49. | :06:54.
premises at about 10:10. -- it shows. We are keen to establish what | :06:55. | :07:01.
vehicles have been used to travel to and from the premises, so anybody | :07:02. | :07:05.
who has been in the area at the time, we are keen to hear from them. | :07:06. | :07:09.
What do think could have happened to the exabytes? They may have gone to | :07:10. | :07:16.
collectors or scrap metal dealers. -- exhibits so they may have been | :07:17. | :07:25.
melted down?! Yes, that is one aspect of it. Certain aspects of the | :07:26. | :07:30.
medals contain some gold, and the value of gold is far less than | :07:31. | :07:31.
medals contain some gold, and the value of a medal that has inspired | :07:32. | :07:36.
the nation. Really important for Rhona to get this back. Thank you | :07:37. | :07:45.
very much. Rhona is desperate to get that Olympic gold medal back and all | :07:46. | :07:49.
those other important exhibits as well that the museum had on show. If | :07:50. | :07:54.
you can help, get in touch as soon as you can. | :07:55. | :07:56.
Time to have a look at the wanted faces, and we start with this man, | :07:57. | :08:02.
Steve Marcel, who also cause himself Andre Marcel. South Wales police | :08:03. | :08:06.
want to question him in connection with an incident in which a woman | :08:07. | :08:10.
was assaulted. He has links to Cardiff, Bristol and Gloucester. He | :08:11. | :08:16.
is considered dangerous, please don't approach, call 999. Next up, | :08:17. | :08:22.
David Blood, although he also uses the name Stuart blood. He is wanted | :08:23. | :08:27.
by police after he failed to return to Ford open prison in West Sussex | :08:28. | :08:30.
where he was serving a life sentence for robbery and firearms offences. | :08:31. | :08:34.
He is six foot one with a Midlands accent and a scar on his right | :08:35. | :08:38.
eyebrow. He has links to staff reject, Warwickshire and | :08:39. | :08:43.
Leicestershire. This is Tumennasan Badam, 29, wanted for questioning by | :08:44. | :08:49.
detectives in Manchester in connection with a serious assault. | :08:50. | :08:55.
He has links to Manchester and London. And finally, do you | :08:56. | :08:59.
recognise this last phase? This is Jonathan Lewis Brown, jailed for six | :09:00. | :09:03.
years for possession of a firearm, released early from prison last | :09:04. | :09:07.
June. He has failed to stick to the conditions of his release and is | :09:08. | :09:11.
wanted back in prison. He has links to the Lambeth and Thornton Heath | :09:12. | :09:16.
areas of London. Can you tell us where any of these faces are? If so, | :09:17. | :09:18.
make sure you pick up the phone. You can e-mail us, too. Now, when | :09:19. | :09:39.
the police are called out to find a missing person, they can't always | :09:40. | :09:44.
search everywhere themselves. In Durham, the people they turn to the | :09:45. | :09:47.
mountain rescue volunteers whose work extends far beyond their job | :09:48. | :09:55.
description. Meets the recruitment consultant, | :09:56. | :09:58.
the tree surgeon, the retired fire officer, and a company director, all | :09:59. | :10:04.
people with jobs that don't exactly risk life and death, but when they | :10:05. | :10:09.
get the call, that is exactly what they will do. Meet the mountain | :10:10. | :10:14.
rescue team. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as a | :10:15. | :10:21.
team. Our team does around about 40 calls per year. Steve and his team | :10:22. | :10:27.
volunteer their time to provide a search and rescue service for the | :10:28. | :10:31.
whole of County Durham, from the high fells in the West to the | :10:32. | :10:34.
coastal communities of the North Sea. We also do an awful lot of | :10:35. | :10:39.
calls in semi urban areas around towns, and the type of people we | :10:40. | :10:43.
looking for is not just missing walkers. It could be missing | :10:44. | :10:48.
children, it's called the elderly with dementia, or it could be we | :10:49. | :10:54.
call despondents, people who want to commit suicide. -- it could be. With | :10:55. | :11:02.
two major rivers and seven large reservoirs in the area, it is no | :11:03. | :11:06.
surprise that many of the rescues are water related. When a student | :11:07. | :11:09.
went missing in Durham centre last year, the team were called in by the | :11:10. | :11:15.
police to assist in the search. When we got there, we discovered it was a | :11:16. | :11:20.
search for a student who had gone missing in the early hours of | :11:21. | :11:24.
Sunday. They had been missing ever since, and it was thought it was | :11:25. | :11:30.
possible that they had gone into the river at that stage. | :11:31. | :11:37.
It is for incidents like this that the team train regularly to keep | :11:38. | :11:45.
their skills up to speed. Today's exercise is 25 miles outside Durham. | :11:46. | :11:53.
Any sort of rescue on water is potentially very hazardous, so our | :11:54. | :11:56.
people have got to be trained. In fact, we train the same way as water | :11:57. | :12:01.
rescue teams in the Fire Service, we get the same qualification. | :12:02. | :12:06.
The aim of the exercise is to find and recover one of their own team, | :12:07. | :12:13.
posing as an injured walker who has fallen into a fast flowing river. To | :12:14. | :12:19.
carry out an effective search, they have to scour every little bit of | :12:20. | :12:27.
the river bank from every angle. What we are going to do in this case | :12:28. | :12:30.
is we're going to send one of our medics across on a line, they will | :12:31. | :12:36.
swim across, make the assessment. The noise from the rapids above is | :12:37. | :12:39.
so loud that the team communicate with whistles and hand signals. The | :12:40. | :12:45.
victim is trapped by steep rocks on the river bank, so the team needs to | :12:46. | :12:49.
formulate a plan to get her out safely. They decide the safest way | :12:50. | :12:54.
is to use an inflatable sled. We will put the casualty on to the | :12:55. | :12:57.
sled, bring it across this way in a pendulum motion, then take the | :12:58. | :13:02.
casualty out of the water, out of the sled, and her over to the | :13:03. | :13:06.
ambulance service. It is a successful search and recovery, but | :13:07. | :13:11.
these are drills that have to be practised frequently to maintain | :13:12. | :13:15.
their effectiveness. For us, it is critical that we get | :13:16. | :13:19.
time to do this, because we are all volunteers, so we often get called | :13:20. | :13:22.
out when we are at work and weekends. So we train to practice | :13:23. | :13:26.
for real incidents. In Durham, the search for the | :13:27. | :13:36.
missing student was long and difficult. We were looking in the | :13:37. | :13:41.
shallows, we had our canoe team out searching the river as well. And we | :13:42. | :13:46.
spent all day, really, we were out all day looking, and no sign. The | :13:47. | :13:57.
next day, a group of rowers made the discovery all rescue us dread - the | :13:58. | :14:02.
body of Luke Beers, a first-year engineering student at Durham | :14:03. | :14:11.
University was found. -- Pierce. You need to steal yourself, because you | :14:12. | :14:14.
are not expecting to find a live person, but you know a family are | :14:15. | :14:18.
waiting for the news, and what could be worse for them than waiting and | :14:19. | :14:21.
not knowing what has happened? In the last year alone, eight young | :14:22. | :14:26.
people have lost their lives in the region's rivers. The families are | :14:27. | :14:29.
going to be extremely upset, and when we realise that, hopefully, by | :14:30. | :14:37.
us finding their loved one, it does bring some sort of closure. As we | :14:38. | :14:44.
head in the film there, the families of missing people desperately need | :14:45. | :14:47.
closure to find out what has happened to their loved ones, and | :14:48. | :14:51.
Detective Superintendent Jon Green joins me now. You have been | :14:52. | :14:55.
investigating for three years the disappearance of a young father, | :14:56. | :15:00.
what happened? Scott was last seen on the 11th May | :15:01. | :15:06.
three years ago, he was seen in the Wingate area of County Durham. He | :15:07. | :15:10.
was a family man, with two children, a wide array of friends in the | :15:11. | :15:14.
Hartlepool and North East area. Very popular. So what have you been doing | :15:15. | :15:20.
over the years to find him? In the subsequent time he was seen, we have | :15:21. | :15:25.
spoken to over 300 people, clearly, appeals to the media are important, | :15:26. | :15:28.
in terms of reaching out to people who might have information, in | :15:29. | :15:32.
relation to where Scott may have been since that date. Very difficult | :15:33. | :15:36.
for his family. We can hear from Scott's mum now. | :15:37. | :15:40.
Totally out of character for Scott to leave his two children. So we are | :15:41. | :15:45.
in a total quandary, there has not been any clues or information from | :15:46. | :15:49.
the day he went missing. It as more time goes on the logic would say | :15:50. | :15:54.
something has happened to him, he hasn't contacted us, but as a mother | :15:55. | :15:58.
I think wouldn't I have known that, wouldn't I have felt that? We have | :15:59. | :16:03.
cried that many tears for him. We need to know what has happened to | :16:04. | :16:08.
him. He is other child, and we need to know -- our child. | :16:09. | :16:12.
Julie Fletcher is worried that something has happened to Scott. Do | :16:13. | :16:17.
you believe he has come to any harm? It certainly can't be ruled out. | :16:18. | :16:21.
What we knew is Scott may have had some debt when he went missing, and | :16:22. | :16:27.
some of his associates from the criminal fraternity, given the | :16:28. | :16:30.
passage of time we can't rule it out. I am sure there is people with | :16:31. | :16:34.
information that haven't shared that with us and I would appeal to those | :16:35. | :16:38.
people to come forward and pass that information to us. What do you know | :16:39. | :16:41.
about what he was doing on the day he did go missing? On the day he was | :16:42. | :16:46.
missing he was with friends, he was dropped off in a lay-by in Wingate | :16:47. | :16:53.
on the A181. His whereabouts from that point is a mystery. I would | :16:54. | :16:57.
appeal to people who are, I am sure do have information in relation to | :16:58. | :17:01.
his whereabouts, to come forward to allow his family to have closures in | :17:02. | :17:04.
relation to what has happened to him. If you can help, bring some | :17:05. | :17:09.
closure to Scott's family, get in touch with us. | :17:10. | :17:13.
Now let us see if you can help us identify the Crookes who made the | :17:14. | :17:17.
mistake of committing their crimes on camera. | :17:18. | :17:22.
We are at a train station in south-east London last summer. | :17:23. | :17:27.
This guy looks like he has been shopping, check out his pink spotty | :17:28. | :17:31.
bag. But he is not here to catch a train. He has got another | :17:32. | :17:36.
destination in mind. He waits for the booking clerk to leave her | :17:37. | :17:40.
office. She collects two card reading machines and while she does | :17:41. | :17:44.
that, the man appears to adjust what looks like a black wig. Suits you | :17:45. | :17:50.
Sir. Then, as she returns to the office, he ambushes her. He forces | :17:51. | :17:55.
his way inside, tells her to open the safe, and ties her hands | :17:56. | :18:01.
together. Five minutes later, he leaves with cash worth more than six | :18:02. | :18:05.
grand in two bag, including that pink spotty one. Do you I know how | :18:06. | :18:10.
this great train station robber is? Call us if you do. | :18:11. | :18:16.
It is a few minutes before opening time at this bank in the Peak | :18:17. | :18:19.
It is a few minutes before opening District town of hath sang. But this | :18:20. | :18:23.
isn't a typical morning. A robber can be seen lurking behind the count | :18:24. | :18:26.
after he and another man broke in can be seen lurking behind the count | :18:27. | :18:30.
hours earlier and laid in wait for the staff. Police say they | :18:31. | :18:31.
threatened them with a handgun the staff. Police say they | :18:32. | :18:38.
tied them up in a back room. During the raid the men seize 108,000 in | :18:39. | :18:43.
cash and leave by the front door. Detectives say a security device | :18:44. | :18:44.

and we are waiting to hear from you. Now every week millions of anglers | :19:21. | :19:24.
take to the waters right across the UK, but now it seems it is the | :19:25. | :19:28.
criminals who are getting away with the biggest catch. | :19:29. | :19:35.
The piece and -- peace and tranquillity of a day out fishing by | :19:36. | :19:41.
the water side. Casting the stresses and strains of every day life aside. | :19:42. | :19:48.
Mike Davis is a keen angler. I have been a fisherman for, well, since I | :19:49. | :19:52.
was a child. Started off, you know, as you do, you get a fishing rod for | :19:53. | :19:58.
a birthday or Christmas, something like that, and I just got hooked. | :19:59. | :20:04.
A motorbike accident in 1989 left Mike disabled. There is not a lot of | :20:05. | :20:11.
sports that I suppose I can do, comfortably, and fishing is | :20:12. | :20:17.
something that I've learned to adapt to. It has taken him years to build | :20:18. | :20:23.
up his collection of tackle. You never stop collecting tackle. | :20:24. | :20:28.
You are always open to something new. A fishing pole can range from | :20:29. | :20:35.
?30-40, to ?5,000. So if you want to have the Ferrari of fishing tackle | :20:36. | :20:38.
you have to pay the Preece. -- price. | :20:39. | :20:44.
But last September, Mike's enjoyment of this tranquil sport was spoiled | :20:45. | :20:49.
by thieves. Put all my equipment away, locked it | :20:50. | :20:54.
up. A couple of padlock, a has on the box on the drive -- hasp. Nerve | :20:55. | :21:00.
thought anything else of it. But the next morning, the chest had been | :21:01. | :21:06.
broken into, and ?5,000 worth of fishing gear had been stolen. | :21:07. | :21:10.
To start with I thought, well, what am I going to do? How will I replace | :21:11. | :21:15.
that amount of equipment, and get it all back to where I was? Fishermen | :21:16. | :21:23.
across the UK believe they are being targeted. Andrew, who runs his own | :21:24. | :21:28.
angling business has been shocked by the rise in the number of thefts | :21:29. | :21:35.
from his fellow fishermen There are stories of anglers being followed | :21:36. | :21:40.
home and their sheds, garage, houses being broken into to steal their | :21:41. | :21:44.
tackle. Anglers say up for a lot of years to get better and better | :21:45. | :21:47.
tackle, spend a lot of money on it, work hard to get it and for it to be | :21:48. | :21:52.
taken and they have the hassle of claiming through the insurance | :21:53. | :21:55.
companies, which can be a problem in itself. | :21:56. | :21:58.
Andrew knows only too well how upsetting it is to be a victim of | :21:59. | :22:04.
theft. Last July, my warehouse was broken into on a Tuesday night and | :22:05. | :22:07.
they more or less wiped out everything. There was a lot of gear, | :22:08. | :22:14.
a lot of gear. There was ?40,000 odd worth stolen. Your heart sinks, | :22:15. | :22:19.
because that represents 25 years of business in this trade. | :22:20. | :22:30.
It has left me sick, and dismayed that you know, somebody would want | :22:31. | :22:36.
to go and rob somebody, not of their tackle, but of their enjoyment as | :22:37. | :22:41.
well. Well, with me now is Jan Porter who | :22:42. | :22:45.
will people will know because you have been a successful an her, those | :22:46. | :22:50.
in the angling fraternity will know your face and Dilip Sarkar from the | :22:51. | :22:54.
angling trust. Tell us what happened to you, you have been a victim here? | :22:55. | :23:00.
I have been targeted a few times over the year, van broken into but | :23:01. | :23:06.
last September I got hit badly on a very secure garage, brick built | :23:07. | :23:14.
garage. It had ?25,000 stolen, some of which I recovered through an | :23:15. | :23:17.
auction site and another load of it was found at a local car pot sale, I | :23:18. | :23:22.
was able to identify it very easily because a lot of it was prototype | :23:23. | :23:25.
stuff. I was able to recover it. That is not always the case. My | :23:26. | :23:29.
advice would be to make sure you get insurance right because mine wasn't, | :23:30. | :23:35.
and make every effort to secure your equipment. People are targeting it | :23:36. | :23:39.
more. You said other anglers are experiencing this, it is a growing | :23:40. | :23:45.
problem. It is. It is easy to shift and move on. Especially when things | :23:46. | :23:49.
are tough, people want bargains and there is nothing better than getting | :23:50. | :23:53.
a cheap bit of kit at a local car pot sale, that is where it is going. | :23:54. | :23:57.
That is a huge blow. You are fighting back though, tell us about | :23:58. | :24:01.
what you are trying to do to really make sure the thieves can't pass it | :24:02. | :24:05.
on. The problem is identifying the property, even if it is recovered, | :24:06. | :24:08.
so what we are doing is working with a leading crime fighting company, to | :24:09. | :24:13.
provide our members with a unique solution, I mean this is a forensic | :24:14. | :24:20.
marker, which makes property traceable back to the owner. It has | :24:21. | :24:24.
a 100 percent conviction rate in court. It is wonderful stuff. This | :24:25. | :24:29.
is going to help and it is very easy to apply, you just put it on the | :24:30. | :24:36.
product, on the property, and under UV light, it shows up perfectly. So | :24:37. | :24:44.
the idea is that that is uniquely traceable to that owner, and that is | :24:45. | :24:48.
just brilliant, you know, criminals need to get the message that fishing | :24:49. | :24:53.
tackle is marked with this forensic marker and don't touch it, because | :24:54. | :24:56.
if they do, they will be marked with it, the property is traceable back | :24:57. | :24:59.
to the owner and you will get convicted. Thank you very much. I | :25:00. | :25:02.
don't know if you could see there, but I could see in daylight there | :25:03. | :25:07.
was a green light there, clearly showing up and if you are you are an | :25:08. | :25:12.
angler and you are interested in finding out more you can get details | :25:13. | :25:15.
on the website. Still to come on today's show: | :25:16. | :25:21.
The kids football team targeted by vandals six times in just one | :25:22. | :25:26.
season. It is like really upsetting because we get have to keep buying | :25:27. | :25:30.
and all the money is going to waste. And we need your help to find the | :25:31. | :25:35.
thoughtless thieves who stole bikes from these former soldiers during a | :25:36. | :25:39.
charity ride. Now, we have heard the saying that | :25:40. | :25:44.
prevention is better than cure, Durham Constabulary is putting that | :25:45. | :25:48.
into practise, in the methods it is using to nurture local youngsters | :25:49. | :25:55.
and root out youth crime. You might not think it, but these | :25:56. | :26:01.
plants are helping to reduce crime in Durham. | :26:02. | :26:10.
That is Thyme. Smell that. They are part of an operation which aims to | :26:11. | :26:14.
prevent young people from becoming victims of crime or entering the | :26:15. | :26:19.
criminal justice system themselves. Iain Robertson co-ordinates this | :26:20. | :26:23.
gardening project. It was given to me to develop as a project. I was | :26:24. | :26:28.
sceptical, thinking, I didn't think young people would like it. How | :26:29. | :26:32.
wrong I was. I was amazed how much they liked it and how much they were | :26:33. | :26:36.
engaged. I feel great, because I am really | :26:37. | :26:43.
lucky to come here. It is like a really good opportunity for the | :26:44. | :26:48.
future. One young person who has benefitted | :26:49. | :26:54.
from the project is Keiron. I got excluded one time, and then | :26:55. | :26:59.
this has got everything off my head. Kept us well behaved in school, to | :27:00. | :27:03.
make sure I would come in. If I was bad behaved I wouldn't be able to | :27:04. | :27:07.
come. A result of this project is the new | :27:08. | :27:14.
relationship between the police and the young people. Before I got to | :27:15. | :27:19.
know any of kids, they wouldn't speak to us, they saw the police as | :27:20. | :27:23.
a barrier there, but because I had been involved with them doing | :27:24. | :27:26.
something they enjoy and speaking to them, and asking them about what | :27:27. | :27:32.
they doing, they would speak to me much more openly outside and I think | :27:33. | :27:36.
it has reduced that barrier, and that has been pretty clear. | :27:37. | :27:45.
I had bad history with the police, a few times, different things but | :27:46. | :27:48.
since I come here I have got used to them, I have got to know them by | :27:49. | :27:54.
personality and just become friends with them, really. | :27:55. | :28:00.
Do not drop them. They are going to the children's centre, they want to | :28:01. | :28:06.
go in one piece. The community can see young people transforming them | :28:07. | :28:10.
bits of land that nobody is doing anything with, so it improves the | :28:11. | :28:15.
perception of young people. In their own community where they live. | :28:16. | :28:19.
But it is not just gardening where officers are using their skills to | :28:20. | :28:32.
engage with young people. It is a fishing scheme that was | :28:33. | :28:36.
developed over a period of 18 months to link in with the children and the | :28:37. | :28:41.
youth of Seaham and the North East coastal area so we can break the | :28:42. | :28:44.
barriers between the police and the youths, give them something to do, | :28:45. | :28:48.
and keep them out of the judicial system. | :28:49. | :28:54.
The area was hit badly when the mines closed down. There is a lot of | :28:55. | :28:58.
unemployment, and basically there is not the money round to give the kids | :28:59. | :29:02.
something to do. The sea is on the doorstep. It is free, and it just | :29:03. | :29:07.
seemed get them out, get them fishing and give them a hobby, a | :29:08. | :29:13.
purpose. And he has got a Hepple -- helping | :29:14. | :29:18.
hand in the form of Niall who completed the course last year. | :29:19. | :29:23.
I enjoy fishing and it is good to spend time with my mates and get to | :29:24. | :29:28.
know the police better. The nine we have had on the course | :29:29. | :29:32.
have been model student, children for the last five months. Kept their | :29:33. | :29:36.
noses clean, not into trouble. They are doing well at school. They are | :29:37. | :29:40.
better kids for coming on it I suppose. The kids have been busy in | :29:41. | :29:55.
the community garden, and they are donating the fruits of their labour | :29:56. | :30:01.
to a local nursery group. We've now got about eight projects running | :30:02. | :30:04.
through County Durham, which is fantastic, to see the young children | :30:05. | :30:11.
and people in the community, working together to create | :30:12. | :30:13.
and people in the community, working can look back on and be proud of. | :30:14. | :30:17.
Now, for injured servicemen and women, sport plays a vital part | :30:18. | :30:24.
Now, for injured servicemen and now by some members of Team True | :30:25. | :30:32.
Spirit, from Help For Heroes. Tell us about it. We set up to help the | :30:33. | :30:37.
guys with physiological and psychological well-being, to help | :30:38. | :30:40.
them on a recovery pathway. It is good for them to be part of a team | :30:41. | :30:45.
and get back into a bit of order in our lives, to have something to | :30:46. | :30:50.
train for. Unfortunately, your fight back to fitness has been affected by | :30:51. | :30:55.
crime, what happened? We went down to do a warm up race in the | :30:56. | :31:00.
Cotswolds or the Ironman in July, and we woke up on the morning, the | :31:01. | :31:05.
guys were like a herd of elephants, screaming and crying that their | :31:06. | :31:09.
bikes had been stolen, 12 of the 24th were stolen from the site. And | :31:10. | :31:14.
that was actually Father's Day as well, wasn't it? It was as well. We | :31:15. | :31:20.
have some similar bikes here, do you think that whoever took them will | :31:21. | :31:24.
have known they were Help For Heroes bikes? They couldn't have not known, | :31:25. | :31:30.
the wagon with the logos was right in the middle of the campsite, and | :31:31. | :31:35.
the tent had the banners on them. Let's try to get them back, you have | :31:36. | :31:40.
got a very poignant story, really, about why you got involved with Help | :31:41. | :31:43.
For Heroes and your bike was stolen too! Like I said, it has given me a | :31:44. | :31:51.
new lease of life. I never wanted to leave the army, but back in 2010 I | :31:52. | :31:56.
got blown up and suffered a traumatic brain injury. I got a | :31:57. | :32:01.
medical discharge because of it, but working for Help For Heroes, being | :32:02. | :32:05.
able to give something back and help rehabilitate other soldiers, like | :32:06. | :32:08.
myself, it has given me a new lease of life, especially Team True | :32:09. | :32:14.
Spirit, going for the Ironman, it was a pipe dream before the injury. | :32:15. | :32:18.
I could never swim, but with the team I have made it a possibility, | :32:19. | :32:26.
but then my bike was stolen, and that has put a spanner in the works, | :32:27. | :32:30.
so to speak. Really upsetting for everybody, I know, because you had | :32:31. | :32:35.
only had the bike from Christmas. I only received my bike from Help For | :32:36. | :32:41.
Heroes at Christmas. I was struggling, I was medically | :32:42. | :32:45.
discharged from the army myself, struggling to be part of the team, | :32:46. | :32:50.
and Mark got me involved with Team True Spirit, and I was training for | :32:51. | :32:54.
this Ironman next month, and to wake up on the morning and the bikes were | :32:55. | :32:59.
gone, it was absolutely gutting. All the potential going to waste. A last | :33:00. | :33:05.
word to you, everyone is very upset, but they are not giving up. | :33:06. | :33:12.
Absolutely not, Team True Spirit by name and by nature. Remember, this | :33:13. | :33:16.
only happened a couple of weeks ago on Father's Day. Help get these | :33:17. | :33:21.
bikes back for the Help For Heroes team. | :33:22. | :33:25.
Now, let's take a look at a long-running investigation, the | :33:26. | :33:29.
murder of Marcus Hall back in 2001. DI Tim Redfearn is with us, as well | :33:30. | :33:37.
as his mum, Icelyn. I will be with you in a moment, Icelyn, but what | :33:38. | :33:41.
happened all these years ago, Tim? Yes, 20th of March 2001, a Tuesday | :33:42. | :33:46.
evening. Marcus and his friends drove up from where they lived in | :33:47. | :33:50.
Peckham to a garage music night that was being held at the Atmosphere | :33:51. | :33:55.
nightclub in Luton town centre. They got into the club quite late, some | :33:56. | :33:59.
time around midnight, and at about 2am everyone was turned out onto the | :34:00. | :34:04.
street. What started the fight that ensued, we do not know to this day, | :34:05. | :34:09.
but a fight erupted outside with Marcus and his friends against | :34:10. | :34:12.
another group, weapons were produced, and markers was fatally | :34:13. | :34:16.
injured. You have been working very hard on this case for a number of | :34:17. | :34:20.
years, and a number of people have been convicted of this, but still | :34:21. | :34:30.
one person you want to trace. Yes, we have never stopped looking for | :34:31. | :34:33.
Adebayo Ekun, who we are looking to convicted for his part in this | :34:34. | :34:38.
crime. We can see some CCTV of the night, but circled is the person you | :34:39. | :34:41.
want to trace, what is going on here? Yeah, this is Adebayo Ekun on | :34:42. | :34:48.
the way to Park Street West in Luton, which is away from the | :34:49. | :34:52.
nightclub. Marcus and his friends have run off in this direction, so | :34:53. | :34:58.
Adebayo Ekun and the others are just about to catch up with him. It is a | :34:59. | :35:03.
bit of a Blu-ray image, but this is a clearer picture taken several | :35:04. | :35:07.
years ago. This is the man who wants to identify. -- a blurry image. This | :35:08. | :35:17.
was about 17 years ago, so bear in mind that the is 37 years old now, | :35:18. | :35:23.
so we will look considerably older, but the appeal is to people who know | :35:24. | :35:28.
him. Yes. And knew him at the time and know his current whereabouts. | :35:29. | :35:33.
Icelyn, I know this must be very difficult, but you wanted to be here | :35:34. | :35:37.
so people at home would know how much it would mean to you to have | :35:38. | :35:43.
some closure here. Marcus needs closure, I need closure, my family | :35:44. | :35:48.
needs closure. I would appeal to anybody at there who knows where he | :35:49. | :35:52.
is to get in touch with the police, get in touch with Crimewatch. It | :35:53. | :35:59.
will never bring Marcus back, but it will be some sort of closure for us. | :36:00. | :36:04.
It is so important for you, even though a number of people have been | :36:05. | :36:08.
charged and convicted, this one outstanding person needs to be | :36:09. | :36:12.
caught and brought to justice. Yeah, they do. It is so difficult for you | :36:13. | :36:18.
to move on, isn't it? Christmas and birthdays, one person missing, it is | :36:19. | :36:24.
not the same. Our family is not the same, it is a ripple effect, and... | :36:25. | :36:31.
Tim, I know you are due to retire, you want to find this individual, | :36:32. | :36:35.
but he will have the baton on to the rest of your team, the case will not | :36:36. | :36:41.
close. Absolutely, we have got this case, and we will continue to pursue | :36:42. | :36:46.
Adebayo Ekun if we are not able to capture him as a result of this | :36:47. | :36:50.
appeal. But there is a ?5,000 reward on offer for information that leads | :36:51. | :36:56.
to the arrest of Adebayo Ekun. OK, thank you for joining us. If you | :36:57. | :37:00.
know where Adebayo Ekun is, please get in touch. As you heard, there is | :37:01. | :37:07.
a reward that will be given for information leading to his arrest. | :37:08. | :37:14.
We have got plenty of sport on the show today, haven't we? These are | :37:15. | :37:18.
members of the Hardwick youth football team, these guys and gals | :37:19. | :37:24.
are football crazy, but a series of break-ins has been cramping their | :37:25. | :37:28.
style. For the kids of Hardwick youth | :37:29. | :37:32.
football club in Stockton on Tees, there is only one place to be on a | :37:33. | :37:36.
Saturday morning, and that is on the pitch. It has been here for 20 | :37:37. | :37:44.
years, we have 136 kids. The coaches and managers are all volunteers. We | :37:45. | :37:48.
want to play football, and we want to coach them to play football. | :37:49. | :37:52.
We are very close together as a team, we have a good laugh in | :37:53. | :37:57.
training, a good time. We have been playing for half a year, I am a | :37:58. | :38:05.
centre back, he is a left back. It means everything to me, because I | :38:06. | :38:08.
really enjoy playing football at this club. | :38:09. | :38:14.
Unfortunately, the club doesn't mean as much to the criminals who have | :38:15. | :38:21.
repeatedly targeted the team's training ground and equipment. Three | :38:22. | :38:26.
years ago, everything they owned was destroyed in a devastating arson | :38:27. | :38:31.
attack. The fire brigade were called, the police came out, but | :38:32. | :38:36.
there was just nothing left. When we had the arson attack, a lot of teams | :38:37. | :38:39.
came forward, and if there was anything they could help us with, | :38:40. | :38:43.
they were giving us anything they could spare. Although the club | :38:44. | :38:48.
managed to get back on its feet, recent times have seen them knocked | :38:49. | :38:53.
down again and again. The metal container they used to store | :38:54. | :38:56.
equipment has proved to be an easy target for thieves and vandals. It | :38:57. | :39:03.
has been broken into six times this season alone. The most recent attack | :39:04. | :39:07.
occurred some time between 7pm on Thursday April the tenth and the | :39:08. | :39:13.
morning of Saturday April the 12th. The club uses a steel container | :39:14. | :39:18.
which is padlocked up, and it has got some chains, but they have been | :39:19. | :39:23.
snapped off. They have decided that they will damage and burn the nets, | :39:24. | :39:28.
burn all the equipment, and probably because of the cold weather they | :39:29. | :39:31.
would have had a fire to warm themselves. The party over, the | :39:32. | :39:35.
thieves left behind a trail of destruction to greet the children | :39:36. | :39:36.
the next day. Came up to the field on a Saturday | :39:37. | :39:48.
morning, and the big field behind there was just covered in debris | :39:49. | :39:53.
what they had smashed. And we just see it all across all the field, it | :39:54. | :39:57.
had all been stamped on and smashed up. We come here just to play | :39:58. | :40:03.
football on a Saturday, and just we can't properly. It is hard to try | :40:04. | :40:11.
and explain to the kids, because we don't know why. So sad that we don't | :40:12. | :40:17.
have the stuff any more. Trying to replace the stolen and damaged | :40:18. | :40:22.
equipment has already cost the club over ?5,000. It is a lot of money, | :40:23. | :40:29.
we ended up having to do raffles, race nights, fun days, basically | :40:30. | :40:35.
begging from all the public. It is really upsetting, because we keep | :40:36. | :40:38.
buying and buying, and then all the money is going to waste. The club | :40:39. | :40:43.
has also had to increase their security measures. That is going to | :40:44. | :40:51.
be a bit of a deterrent for them. But also to let them know we are not | :40:52. | :40:53.
going to be beaten. And Andie Ruddy and members of the | :40:54. | :41:00.
team are with me now, And Andie Ruddy and members of the | :41:01. | :41:08.
now? Fortunately for us, the break-ins have actually stopped. It | :41:09. | :41:12.
is still a worry when we turn up for training, but | :41:13. | :41:16.
is still a worry when we turn up for down. The youth think that is | :41:17. | :41:23.
because of the added security? -- do you think? That is part of it, it | :41:24. | :41:27.
was donated by a local company, so we are hoping it has deterred all | :41:28. | :41:32.
the people doing it. You have got CCTV now. These kids are football | :41:33. | :41:36.
crazy, so disappointing for them to see it in that state. Heartbreaking | :41:37. | :41:42.
for the kids. How is training going? Mason, when you saw all that | :41:43. | :41:49.
mess at the club, what did you think? I thought... I was really | :41:50. | :41:54.
sad, because all of the money spent on equipment has gone to waste when | :41:55. | :41:57.
it has been snapped, burned. The money could go to good use, like | :41:58. | :42:02.
going to tournaments. The money that has to be spent on new nets and | :42:03. | :42:08.
equipment could go two days out, couldn't it? Yes. What is the | :42:09. | :42:14.
message you want to give to thieves? I think that was just about | :42:15. | :42:18.
loud enough, hopefully they will get the message! | :42:19. | :42:23.
Just time for a quick update that I can give you, a potential new lead | :42:24. | :42:27.
on the attack on Gerard Williams in a Middlesbrough park. Some of you | :42:28. | :42:31.
also suggesting where the distinctive boiler suit the attacker | :42:32. | :42:34.
was wearing may have come from, so thank you to everyone who has got in | :42:35. | :42:39.
touch. Where are you going to be tomorrow? | :42:40. | :42:45.
Tomorrow, Rav, we will be at Stockton on Tees, and the tactical | :42:46. | :42:48.
training centre for Cleveland police. We are going to be finding | :42:49. | :42:52.
out how the community teams are tackling drugs, because cannabis | :42:53. | :42:57.
farms spring up in the most unusual of places, and also how they are | :42:58. | :43:01.
cracking down on the use of drugs in pubs. | :43:02. | :43:06.
Thank you, Sian. If you would like to watch any of the CCTV featured in | :43:07. | :43:10.
the programme, check out the website, and the wanted faces are | :43:11. | :43:14.
online too. I will leave you with another look at them now, if you | :43:15. | :43:18.
know where they are, call us. Thank you for watching. Until tomorrow, | :43:19. | :43:19.
take care! | :43:20. | :43:22. |
