live for the last time this week and with your help we can put some more | :00:11. | :00:16.
baddies behind bars. A young man's life damaged forever after a single | :00:17. | :00:20.
punch. I woke up in hospital. There was two detectives by my bed and I | :00:21. | :00:26.
didn't know what had happened. And the exciting new technology helping | :00:27. | :00:30.
police tackle mobile phone theft. It can tell if it is on a person's | :00:31. | :00:35.
body, if they have got it in their pocket or handbag. You're watching | :00:36. | :00:38.
Crimewatch Roadshow. Hello and welcome and we need just a | :00:39. | :01:06.
little more help from you to crack unsolved crimes. Today, who broke | :01:07. | :01:12.
into a metal container to steal a charity's Gaddening equipment. | :01:13. | :01:16.
They're just a bunch of rats. That's all they are. And a new tactic used | :01:17. | :01:24.
by thieves to distract victims. Puncturing their tyres. It is our | :01:25. | :01:27.
last day in the north-east and Sian is by the river in Newcastle. Good | :01:28. | :01:40.
morning. I'm here the quayside at Newcastle upon Tyne. But busy city | :01:41. | :01:46.
centres do provide unique policing challenges as I will be finding out. | :01:47. | :01:51.
First a young man starting out on a promising career until a night out | :01:52. | :01:56.
to celebrate a friend's birthday ended with a random but brutal | :01:57. | :02:03.
attack. For Stephen Marley, life was about sport. Me and sport's always | :02:04. | :02:09.
been a massive part of my life. Normally I have lived for the | :02:10. | :02:12.
weekends, trying to get through Monday to Friday just so you can get | :02:13. | :02:18.
to Saturday to play football. After graduating, Stephen became a PE | :02:19. | :02:27.
teacher. He got a job at Newcastle. Teaching. Which he was pleased with. | :02:28. | :02:35.
We were so proud of him. When I moved to the area and there was no | :02:36. | :02:41.
one I knew and I wanted to join some teams and make friends and get to | :02:42. | :02:45.
know people. He also kept in touch with old friends from home. On a | :02:46. | :02:49.
Saturday night two years ago he joined a group celebrating a 21st | :02:50. | :02:55.
birthday. I just wanted to go and have a laugh. I just blow off some | :02:56. | :03:02.
steam. His friends arrived in town earlier and he joined them in a bar | :03:03. | :03:10.
at about 10pm. We were around the Gate area of town, which is well | :03:11. | :03:15.
known for hen dos and stag dos. I did say to the lads after we had | :03:16. | :03:21.
been in a bar, we will go to the central station area. It is a nicer | :03:22. | :03:25.
area. A bit classier. His friends were happy to take his advice. Just | :03:26. | :03:36.
before 11. 30 the group headed down Clayton Street. It was a suggest to | :03:37. | :03:41.
change Stephen's life. Me and my friend went to the cashpoint and | :03:42. | :03:46.
started heading off and bumped into a group of other lads. One knocked | :03:47. | :03:50.
into Stephen's friend. There was a quick exchange of words, but all | :03:51. | :03:55.
seemed fine. Then out of the blue Stephen was floored by a single | :03:56. | :04:00.
punch to the head. As he lay unconscious and bleeding, one of the | :04:01. | :04:07.
men ran off down towards the station. I can't remember much of | :04:08. | :04:13.
it. I woke up in hospital. There was two detectives by my bed. I didn't | :04:14. | :04:17.
know what had happened to me. We got a call about 2. 30 in the morning. | :04:18. | :04:23.
From one of his friends to say that he was in hospital. He had got a | :04:24. | :04:32.
fractured skull. They told us he was lucky to be alive. His balance had | :04:33. | :04:37.
gone. He was constantly being sick. He couldn't walk. He had to be | :04:38. | :04:42.
helped. It was horrendous when we saw him that night. Really | :04:43. | :04:47.
horrendous. As a result of the attack, Stephen had to spent a week | :04:48. | :04:55.
in hospital. For a long time his injuries left him disorientated, | :04:56. | :05:02.
dizzy and unable to walk properly. I had fractured a bone in my ear which | :05:03. | :05:08.
had done some damage to the nerves. It was like taking a drunk down for | :05:09. | :05:18.
a walk. He was rubbing his head. He was just not my Stephen any more. | :05:19. | :05:24.
Sorry, I'm going to have to stop, because he isn't. My short-term | :05:25. | :05:33.
memory's not as good as it was. I'm currently deaf in my left ear. I'm | :05:34. | :05:39.
quite ratty with people. I can lose my temper. Before like I used to be | :05:40. | :05:45.
a calm, quiet relaxed person. I feel like it's changed my personality | :05:46. | :05:52.
since that happened. He is more introverted. He doesn't go out. He | :05:53. | :05:59.
is quiet and a bit more moody. It is a big change in him. I get upset | :06:00. | :06:04.
that this person's changed me forever. And I did nothing to them. | :06:05. | :06:12.
And why the guy done to me was still just living a happy normal life | :06:13. | :06:17.
after he had left me with what I consider a handicap. A shocking case | :06:18. | :06:29.
and joining me is DC Calum Meikle. We are going back to 2012. Remind | :06:30. | :06:34.
people who may have been there what happened. Yes, the assault took | :06:35. | :06:42.
place on a Saturday evening, 26th May 2012. On Clayton Street around | :06:43. | :06:47.
the corner from The Gate complex, where Stephen and his friend had | :06:48. | :06:54.
been out. You have got some CCTV. Yes the footage shows a male who | :06:55. | :07:09.
runs down Clayton Street in Fenkle Street. He is stocky and five foot | :07:10. | :07:13.
eight tall and we are keen to speak to him. You think the answer is out | :07:14. | :07:17.
there and something knows who did this? Yes, Stephen was out with a | :07:18. | :07:22.
large group of friends. The person we would like to speak to was also | :07:23. | :07:27.
with a group of friends. It is two years down the line and allegiances | :07:28. | :07:32.
do move on and I would urge anyone in the group to come forward, or | :07:33. | :07:37.
anybody who recognises that male to come forward. Thank you. So we saw | :07:38. | :07:44.
there the devastating effect that just one single blow can have. | :07:45. | :07:52.
Joining me are Dave and Pat Rogers who have set up a charity to warn | :07:53. | :07:56.
people of the dangers of this. Tell us about what led you to you setting | :07:57. | :08:02.
up the charity? Our son, Adam, had been out with friends in Blackburn | :08:03. | :08:08.
and he was killed by a single punch after a dispute had broken out with | :08:09. | :08:13.
a group of teenagers. He was acting as a peace-maker at the time, trying | :08:14. | :08:18.
to calm things down when a young 16-year-old, who was extremely | :08:19. | :08:23.
drunk, lost his temper and swung just one punch. Adam was probably | :08:24. | :08:28.
unconscious before he hit the ground and couldn't protect himself and his | :08:29. | :08:32.
head hit the ground first and he died of his injuries later that day. | :08:33. | :08:38.
It is difficult and we appreciate you talking us to. There is some | :08:39. | :08:44.
CCTV footage that shows the moments after he did hit the ground. Yes. | :08:45. | :08:49.
And his friend were there then. Yes. Trying to help. Very difficult for | :08:50. | :08:54.
them. Absolutely. There are the people who there on that night were | :08:55. | :09:00.
traumatised by what happened and particularly his friend, Rachael, | :09:01. | :09:04.
who looked after him, cradled him and told him everything was all | :09:05. | :09:11.
right, even though it was obviously that he was injured. Something | :09:12. | :09:17.
positive has come from is in, you're working hard with the campaign. Tell | :09:18. | :09:24.
us about it. We wanted something positive, because we were in such a | :09:25. | :09:27.
dark place and we knew there were lesson there is a could be | :09:28. | :09:29. |
