punch. I woke up in hospital. There was two detectives by my bed and I

didn't know what had happened. And the exciting new technology helping

police tackle mobile phone theft. It can tell if it is on a person's

body, if they have got it in their pocket or handbag. You're watching

Crimewatch Roadshow. Hello and welcome and we need just a

little more help from you to crack unsolved crimes. Today, who broke

into a metal container to steal a charity's Gaddening equipment.

They're just a bunch of rats. That's all they are. And a new tactic used

by thieves to distract victims. Puncturing their tyres. It is our

last day in the north-east and Sian is by the river in Newcastle. Good

morning. I'm here the quayside at Newcastle upon Tyne. But busy city

centres do provide unique policing challenges as I will be finding out.

First a young man starting out on a promising career until a night out

to celebrate a friend's birthday ended with a random but brutal

attack. For Stephen Marley, life was about sport. Me and sport's always

been a massive part of my life. Normally I have lived for the

weekends, trying to get through Monday to Friday just so you can get

to Saturday to play football. After graduating, Stephen became a PE

teacher. He got a job at Newcastle. Teaching. Which he was pleased with.

We were so proud of him. When I moved to the area and there was no

one I knew and I wanted to join some teams and make friends and get to

know people. He also kept in touch with old friends from home. On a

Saturday night two years ago he joined a group celebrating a 21st

birthday. I just wanted to go and have a laugh. I just blow off some

steam. His friends arrived in town earlier and he joined them in a bar

at about 10pm. We were around the Gate area of town, which is well

known for hen dos and stag dos. I did say to the lads after we had

been in a bar, we will go to the central station area. It is a nicer

area. A bit classier. His friends were happy to take his advice. Just

before 11. 30 the group headed down Clayton Street. It was a suggest to

change Stephen's life. Me and my friend went to the cashpoint and

started heading off and bumped into a group of other lads. One knocked

into Stephen's friend. There was a quick exchange of words, but all

seemed fine. Then out of the blue Stephen was floored by a single

punch to the head. As he lay unconscious and bleeding, one of the

men ran off down towards the station. I can't remember much of

it. I woke up in hospital. There was two detectives by my bed. I didn't

know what had happened to me. We got a call about 2. 30 in the morning.

From one of his friends to say that he was in hospital. He had got a

fractured skull. They told us he was lucky to be alive. His balance had

gone. He was constantly being sick. He couldn't walk. He had to be

helped. It was horrendous when we saw him that night. Really

horrendous. As a result of the attack, Stephen had to spent a week

in hospital. For a long time his injuries left him disorientated,

dizzy and unable to walk properly. I had fractured a bone in my ear which

had done some damage to the nerves. It was like taking a drunk down for

a walk. He was rubbing his head. He was just not my Stephen any more.

Sorry, I'm going to have to stop, because he isn't. My short-term

memory's not as good as it was. I'm currently deaf in my left ear. I'm

quite ratty with people. I can lose my temper. Before like I used to be

a calm, quiet relaxed person. I feel like it's changed my personality

since that happened. He is more introverted. He doesn't go out. He

is quiet and a bit more moody. It is a big change in him. I get upset

that this person's changed me forever. And I did nothing to them.

And why the guy done to me was still just living a happy normal life

after he had left me with what I consider a handicap. A shocking case

and joining me is DC Calum Meikle. We are going back to 2012. Remind

people who may have been there what happened. Yes, the assault took

place on a Saturday evening, 26th May 2012. On Clayton Street around

the corner from The Gate complex, where Stephen and his friend had

been out. You have got some CCTV. Yes the footage shows a male who

runs down Clayton Street in Fenkle Street. He is stocky and five foot

eight tall and we are keen to speak to him. You think the answer is out

there and something knows who did this? Yes, Stephen was out with a

large group of friends. The person we would like to speak to was also

with a group of friends. It is two years down the line and allegiances

do move on and I would urge anyone in the group to come forward, or

anybody who recognises that male to come forward. Thank you. So we saw

there the devastating effect that just one single blow can have.

Joining me are Dave and Pat Rogers who have set up a charity to warn

people of the dangers of this. Tell us about what led you to you setting

up the charity? Our son, Adam, had been out with friends in Blackburn

and he was killed by a single punch after a dispute had broken out with

a group of teenagers. He was acting as a peace-maker at the time, trying

to calm things down when a young 16-year-old, who was extremely

drunk, lost his temper and swung just one punch. Adam was probably

unconscious before he hit the ground and couldn't protect himself and his

head hit the ground first and he died of his injuries later that day.

It is difficult and we appreciate you talking us to. There is some

CCTV footage that shows the moments after he did hit the ground. Yes.

And his friend were there then. Yes. Trying to help. Very difficult for

them. Absolutely. There are the people who there on that night were

traumatised by what happened and particularly his friend, Rachael,

who looked after him, cradled him and told him everything was all

right, even though it was obviously that he was injured. Something

positive has come from is in, you're working hard with the campaign. Tell
