put a few more criminals behind bars. We hunt for a gang stealing | :00:15. | :00:24.
gold bullion. This is a new level for us. A pensioner who is not | :00:25. | :00:31.
prepared to take a burglary lying down. I want that money back. And an | :00:32. | :00:42.
escape route for abuse. We are out with the domestic violence team. If | :00:43. | :00:46.
you are at home and you think we have nowhere to go, you will put up | :00:47. | :00:51.
with it. We can say, actually, we can help you. You are watching | :00:52. | :01:00.
Crimewatch road show. Hello and welcome to | :01:01. | :01:09.
Crimewatch Roadshow. It's the start | :01:10. | :01:10.
of our final week travelling the country tackling the kind of | :01:11. | :01:12.
crime which blights all our lives. The Athe cruel thief who hoodwinked | :01:13. | :01:30.
a pensioner and stole a family heirloom. -- the cruel these. And a | :01:31. | :01:41.
neighbour who came to the rescue. I knew something serious was going on. | :01:42. | :01:47.
Today the Roadshow's reached London and Sian is at the Olympic Park | :01:48. | :01:50.
Yes, we're in the shadow of the famous orbital, | :01:51. | :01:59.
where the Metropolitan Police's rope team is waiting to descend nearly | :02:00. | :02:01.
First up, a pensioner who's up in arms after a couple of bogus | :02:02. | :02:06.
How dare these men come into my home and do what they have done? I want | :02:07. | :02:19.
them punished. I do not care how long it takes. As far as I am | :02:20. | :02:24.
concerned, they have to go to prison. This man has always enjoyed | :02:25. | :02:33.
a spot of gardening. Before his wife died, they spent many hours in the | :02:34. | :02:39.
garden together. We had our tea out there, or just sat that and read a | :02:40. | :02:46.
book. Very happy times. At 81, doing all the pruning and cutting back is | :02:47. | :02:52.
not as easy as it used to be. I am restricted to certain things I can | :02:53. | :02:55.
do in the garden. Height is one of them. On 5th of August last year, | :02:56. | :03:03.
when a man turned up offering to cut his head, it seemed to be just the | :03:04. | :03:09.
helping hand Roy look for. When I looked at the card that was flashed | :03:10. | :03:14.
at me, I thought, this is it. They were genuine people. I agreed to | :03:15. | :03:21.
have the trees cut back. A deal was struck at ?180. The men appeared | :03:22. | :03:25.
professional and got on with the job. Every now and again I looked | :03:26. | :03:29.
out to see what they were doing. Then I found they were doing the | :03:30. | :03:33.
side of the hedge, which I did not want them to do. I thought, I will | :03:34. | :03:39.
wait till they come in and I will confront them. These men gave the | :03:40. | :03:51.
appearance they were professional. Once they had finished, one of the | :03:52. | :03:56.
men came in for the money. Roy had agreed to pay ?180 and had the cash | :03:57. | :04:00.
ready. Having downed the extra work, the man wanted more. I said, you | :04:01. | :04:09.
were not asked to do the side of the hedge. They said, we have done it | :04:10. | :04:20.
now. That will be ?400. I thought, I will only get 100 out. I pulled the | :04:21. | :04:25.
money out of the safe, but it onto the bed and then rushed downstairs | :04:26. | :04:30.
to give them the money to get rid of them. I did not lock the safe and | :04:31. | :04:36.
the money was on the bed. One of the men insisted he go outside to | :04:37. | :04:45.
inspect the handiwork. Whilst he was being distracted in the garden, the | :04:46. | :04:50.
other man was upstairs, helping himself to the contents of the safe. | :04:51. | :04:57.
Outside, his accomplice suddenly seemed more open to negotiation. I | :04:58. | :05:02.
said to him, I will give you only ?100. He said, all right, I will | :05:03. | :05:10.
give you ?100. I never saw the boss after that. He had gone. Roy went | :05:11. | :05:16.
back upstairs to lock the safe, relieved they have left. He found | :05:17. | :05:22.
the thieves had taken ?6,000 in cash as well as irreplaceable pieces of | :05:23. | :05:32.
jewellery. There was no money and two rings, one belonged to my aunt | :05:33. | :05:35.
and that was a wedding ring, and my wife 's engagement ring had gone as | :05:36. | :05:41.
well. It is not just financial loss, it is that someone had invaded his | :05:42. | :05:46.
home uninvited and gone into intimate areas of the house. I feel | :05:47. | :05:53.
these people are fairly professional and proficient at this. Boy is | :05:54. | :05:57.
trying to come to terms with the fact he was conned in this way. I | :05:58. | :06:05.
was very angry. I really was. I want them punished and as harshly as they | :06:06. | :06:10.
can get punished. They will have to pay the money back whatever happens. | :06:11. | :06:17.
Roy is certainly not taking this lying down. | :06:18. | :06:24.
These people target the elderly because they think they | :06:25. | :06:29.
But you do have a few lines of investigation in this case. | :06:30. | :06:41.
Going back to the man who did not at the door, what other clues could | :06:42. | :06:50.
there be? I believe by the party they used at the scene in order to | :06:51. | :06:53.
get the confidence of the victim, these people are pretty professional | :06:54. | :06:56.
gardeners. They arrived in a vehicle, had the requisite tools for | :06:57. | :07:01.
the job. I think these people would have done this before and probably | :07:02. | :07:07.
work in the local area. ?6,000 was taken. Roy is very security | :07:08. | :07:11.
conscious but they did manage to trick him. It really is a shocking | :07:12. | :07:25.
case. Now for the wanted faces. This is Michael Nolan. He was jailed for | :07:26. | :07:30.
seven years for robbery and was released in 2010. He has failed to | :07:31. | :07:37.
stick to the conditions and is now wanted back in prison. Our next | :07:38. | :07:44.
wanted face is 60-year-old Keith Turner. He served 19 years in prison | :07:45. | :07:49.
for the manslaughter of his mother and sister and was released on | :07:50. | :07:54.
licence. His licence was revoked. That was in the year 2000 and he is | :07:55. | :07:59.
now on the round. This photo was taken around 20 years ago but police | :08:00. | :08:02.
have produced this age progression image of what he may look like now. | :08:03. | :08:07.
Originally from Newcastle, he is known to have connections across the | :08:08. | :08:12.
UK, as well as to Spain, France and South Africa. Use a hazard had two | :08:13. | :08:19.
with his name on the right forearm. Next -- he also has a tad too with | :08:20. | :08:28.
his name on his right forearm. Higgins is around five tall and of | :08:29. | :08:33.
stocky build. It is believed he has grown a full beard and has dyed his | :08:34. | :08:40.
hair blond. He is linked with Essex and London. Next, was wanted -- | :08:41. | :08:58.
next, Karim Hama-Amin was wanted for a serious sexual assault. He often | :08:59. | :09:02.
worked as a barber and has links to Morecambe, London, Sheffield and | :09:03. | :09:07.
Manchester. If you recognise any of these faces, make sure you pick up | :09:08. | :09:08.
the phone. Some network an mobile operators | :09:09. | :09:12.
will charge for these calls. Text CW, | :09:13. | :09:18.
space and then your message. Texts will be charged | :09:19. | :09:21.
at your standard message rate. The police are always keen to make | :09:22. | :09:24.
use of any special talents officers And those who never forget | :09:25. | :09:28.
a face are no exception. Chief Inspector Gareth | :09:29. | :09:34.
Davies is with me now. First of all, | :09:35. | :09:40.
what is a super recogniser ? Within The Met, it is someone who | :09:41. | :09:53.
has the ability to recognise a person 's face above a normal person | :09:54. | :10:03.
's ability. They can recognise them in a crowd. You have been tapping | :10:04. | :10:08.
into that ability quite successfully. Yes, we have. At Earls | :10:09. | :10:15.
Court, we have large-scale events. One event, we had over 120 mobile | :10:16. | :10:21.
phone stolen by pickpockets in one night. We designed an operation | :10:22. | :10:28.
using a super recogniser. The next big one was the Arctic monkeys gig. | :10:29. | :10:34.
We had 20,000 people attending a night. We deployed them and they | :10:35. | :10:39.
identified persons committing the crime. At that gig, we only had 12 | :10:40. | :10:49.
mobile phones stolen. There was only four at another one. The message to | :10:50. | :10:52.
the pickpockets is beware because The Met bulletin police are out | :10:53. | :10:57.
there using super recogniser is. -- the Metropolitan police. We do not | :10:58. | :11:08.
believe you can learn this. It seems to be an innate capacity. They can | :11:09. | :11:16.
absorb and learn new faces very quickly and distinguish between | :11:17. | :11:19.
sometimes very highly similar individuals. I wish I had this | :11:20. | :11:25.
ability. We cannot teach it. I do not know whether I have this | :11:26. | :11:32.
ability. We have disguised these faces of very famous people by | :11:33. | :11:35.
getting rid of the external features and the hairstyle to see if you can | :11:36. | :11:41.
recognise them. I think it makes it a bit harder. You have to focus on | :11:42. | :11:46.
the features. Give me some time. I will look at these faces. Get back | :11:47. | :11:49.
to me later. Gold bullion and fake currency is | :11:50. | :11:51.
not something we come usually across often on Roadshow, | :11:52. | :11:54.
but this next crime combines both These two men are about to carry out | :11:55. | :12:07.
a classic con, where hundreds of thousands of pounds. This is the | :12:08. | :12:11.
kind of thing you would see in Hollywood. It is not something we | :12:12. | :12:15.
would deal with day-to-day. It is a new level of fraud for us. It is not | :12:16. | :12:23.
Vegas or a film set. This is a real scam that takes place in a real | :12:24. | :12:29.
hotel in Central London. This is our first player. A conman who goes by | :12:30. | :12:36.
the name of Stephan. Waiting for him is his target, a reputable gold | :12:37. | :12:43.
bullion dealer. She is about to be drawn into a high-stakes scan. She | :12:44. | :12:47.
has met with him on a number of occasions. He originally approached | :12:48. | :12:49.
her as a legitimate customer and her as a legitimate customer and | :12:50. | :12:58.
doing so, there is a level of trust. White tapping here is our | :12:59. | :12:59.
next player. The victim has trust. White tapping here is our | :13:00. | :13:09.
to trade 20 kilos of gold for hard cash. Stephan has introduced her to | :13:10. | :13:28.
Alberto and the lady, she has -- he has said it is Alberto 's wife. The | :13:29. | :13:35.
deal is split into two stages. Money will change hands at the hotel while | :13:36. | :13:41.
the gold is being kept across town. Stephan had insisted he would only | :13:42. | :13:46.
pay for the gold in cash. The victim agreed but has brought her own | :13:47. | :13:51.
counting machine to make sure all the money is genuine. Alberto had | :13:52. | :13:55.
refused to let anybody else into the room other than himself and the | :13:56. | :13:57.
victim. She had also taken somebody room other than himself and the | :13:58. | :14:00.
victim. She had also taken with her to act as a bit of security. There | :14:01. | :14:11.
was only the two of them in the room when the exchange took place. The | :14:12. | :14:16.
deal was worth more than ?600,000. The money is then sealed in plastic | :14:17. | :14:22.
bags. When the counting is over, all the cash is transferred to a | :14:23. | :14:26.
briefcase. Now that the payment is being made, the dealer makes | :14:27. | :14:30.
arrangements to release the gold. Once the money had been exchanged, | :14:31. | :14:37.
Alberto 's wife was to go to a separate venue to meet up with the | :14:38. | :14:42.
big team 's brother. Only once there was proof the money had changed | :14:43. | :14:45.
hands would he hand over the money in gold. This is what happened. The | :14:46. | :14:58.
victim is oblivious to the scam. The fraudsters have the gold and have | :14:59. | :15:05.
swung told her out the cash. -- swindled. When the victim got | :15:06. | :15:09.
home, there was only the equivalent of ?200,000 and not half a million | :15:10. | :15:13.
she was expecting to find. The dealer had fallen for an | :15:14. | :15:17.
elaborate and well-planned hustle. How did they do it? | :15:18. | :15:24.
Well, hours before the meeting took place, CCTV shows them setting the | :15:25. | :15:32.
trap. They arrive with ?800,000 corruption under 800,000 genuine | :15:33. | :15:37.
currencies macro and the same amount in false cash. | :15:38. | :15:44.
We have CCTV footage inside the hotel, the bars, corridors, | :15:45. | :15:50.
everywhere they went except the one room where the exchange took place. | :15:51. | :15:54.
They were careful to find somewhere where we would not be able to see | :15:55. | :15:58.
them actually making the switch. The victim is sure the cash is | :15:59. | :16:03.
genuine. But between putting the money into bundles and placing it in | :16:04. | :16:08.
the briefcase, it was stored in a sideboard. This is where she | :16:09. | :16:14.
believes the switch took place. These are clearly very sophisticated | :16:15. | :16:17.
criminals, people who know that trade and have been doing it for a | :16:18. | :16:21.
long time. We need to stop them. They have got all of this gold, | :16:22. | :16:26.
creating more money, getting bigger and better scams will stop it could | :16:27. | :16:29.
spiral out of control. The fraudsters got away | :16:30. | :16:33.
with over ?600,000. The victim must have | :16:34. | :16:36.
been devastated. The victim was very well deceived. | :16:37. | :16:51.
The suspects gained her confidence. She thought it was legitimate | :16:52. | :16:56.
business. Tell us about the men, especially the ringleaders? | :16:57. | :17:07.
The first one is called Stephan. About six years old. Slim build. He | :17:08. | :17:10.
was wearing a light blue suit with a pink shirt, pink tie, Surrey, and a | :17:11. | :17:16.
pink handkerchief in the pocket. The second man gave his name as Alberto. | :17:17. | :17:23.
About 45 years old, five, quite stocky. Both men were eastern | :17:24. | :17:29.
European, Mediterranean looking. You have brought along the money in | :17:30. | :17:36.
a bag, fake euros, pretty weighty. You're covered these. | :17:37. | :17:39.
That was the money handed over to the victim. They have been seized by | :17:40. | :17:43.
the police. We have some gold here, two very | :17:44. | :17:53.
pretty gold bars. Worth ?25,000 each. What has happened to the gold | :17:54. | :17:57.
in this case? There is a possibility it has been | :17:58. | :18:01.
melted down and is being used for other matters. All it could still be | :18:02. | :18:03.
out there in bullion. Hard to believe that those | :18:04. | :18:08.
fraudsters could be so brazen. These were taken from the Exhibitionist | :18:09. | :18:16.
Gallery in Notting Hill in west London in the early hours of Monday | :18:17. | :18:24.
9th December. The pieces are valued at more than ?33,000. They'd only | :18:25. | :18:27.
been on display for four days when The theft was captured on CCTV. | :18:28. | :18:47.
After breaking into the gallery, he removes the first picture. He | :18:48. | :18:53.
started it in the front of his car. The second picture is bigger. It | :18:54. | :18:57.
proves to be a little bit more problematic. You can see there, the | :18:58. | :19:04.
deep end up stuffing it through the boot of the car, before eventually | :19:05. | :19:09.
making his getaway. Police want to trace the vehicle he was driving. | :19:10. | :19:25.
Now, this next thief has a real cheek. | :19:26. | :19:27.
He managed to convince a pensioner to help him steal her | :19:28. | :19:29.
I handed this picture to somebody I really did not know. | :19:30. | :19:53.
I need not have done it. Saturday the 18th of January was an evening | :19:54. | :19:57.
like no other four are similar, she was settling down for the night, | :19:58. | :20:00.
catching up with some reading, when the phone rang. | :20:01. | :20:08.
Well, he immediately said he was calling from the police station. And | :20:09. | :20:15.
that they were holding to people in custody. | :20:16. | :20:18.
The man on the phone told Cylla two people had been arrested are taking | :20:19. | :20:21.
money from her bank account. He advised her to put down the phone | :20:22. | :20:25.
and call the fraud department immediately. She had no idea she was | :20:26. | :20:30.
about to fall victim to an elaborate fraud. | :20:31. | :20:35.
And it did occur to me that it was quite strange. But, however, I just | :20:36. | :20:41.
went on because I felt I simply had to give this my best attention. | :20:42. | :20:46.
Cylla was on the phone for over two and a half hours. In that time, | :20:47. | :20:51.
whilst she believed she had made two separate calls to her bag and | :20:52. | :20:54.
insurance company, she was quizzed about other valuables in the house. | :20:55. | :21:00.
I did in the end admit I had some quite nice pictures, and also, I | :21:01. | :21:06.
mentioned jewellery. She also mentioned one painting in | :21:07. | :21:10.
particular which had been in her family for generations. It was | :21:11. | :21:15.
priceless to her. The man came up with a solution to keep it safe. | :21:16. | :21:21.
Anyway, they said, we will send someone round from what they called | :21:22. | :21:25.
the rapid response team. To collect the picture, and the jewellery and | :21:26. | :21:31.
credit cards. Oh, hello, do come in. | :21:32. | :21:37.
And the young man appeared, and I said, I can't get that picture down | :21:38. | :21:41.
from the wall. He said, I will help you. So we got it down from the | :21:42. | :21:47.
wall. And he said, I think we had better wrap it up. So I went and got | :21:48. | :21:52.
an old bath towel and be wrapped it up together. And he took it away. | :21:53. | :22:01.
And I gave him also my credit cards, and a little bag of jewellery | :22:02. | :22:07.
which I kept partially hidden, in another room. | :22:08. | :22:10.
But he wasn't from the rapid response team. She hadn't been | :22:11. | :22:15.
speaking to her bank or insurance. She had in fact just been conned. | :22:16. | :22:20.
When she picks up the phone, she thinks she is on the line to a | :22:21. | :22:24.
police officer. He advises her what had happened. And advises her to | :22:25. | :22:29.
call the NatWest fraud department. She puts down the phone, thinking | :22:30. | :22:34.
she has disconnected the call but, actually, the suspects are still on | :22:35. | :22:39.
the end of the line, the call is never disconnected. | :22:40. | :22:42.
After a little while, I went to bed. It was then after midnight. And | :22:43. | :22:49.
I suddenly thought, this is not right. And that is when I got up and | :22:50. | :22:52.
phoned the police. She had handed | :22:53. | :22:59.
phoned the police. painting worth a staggering | :23:00. | :23:04.
?100,000. The artwork had hung in her family | :23:05. | :23:10.
home for decades, but had also been displayed in exhibitions worldwide. | :23:11. | :23:16.
It relates to my father and his family. And I felt it was, in a | :23:17. | :23:24.
sense, entrusted to me. I want to get it back. And I shall see that it | :23:25. | :23:29.
is in safe hands immediately it comes to me. | :23:30. | :23:39.
I feel terribly guilty that I was responsible for something of worth. | :23:40. | :23:45.
I don't mean monetary worth. But of value. And I have not looked after | :23:46. | :23:50.
it properly. She has been really upset | :23:51. | :23:57.
about the loss of that painting. DC Victoria L'Oste-Brown, who | :23:58. | :23:59.
you saw in the film, is with me. Do you think she has much chance | :24:00. | :24:02.
of getting it back? That is why we are here today. It is | :24:03. | :24:11.
a distinctive painting as you can see from this copy. It is worth | :24:12. | :24:18.
about ?100,000. It is a good copy, very handy for us to have for the | :24:19. | :24:22.
purposes of this programme. You are hoping someone might have | :24:23. | :24:27.
seen this man leaving the home. We told he left at 10:30pm. | :24:28. | :24:33.
Described as white, 35, slight build, short, dark hair and a | :24:34. | :24:37.
moustache. There is CCTV of a man using a | :24:38. | :24:42.
cashpoint nearby. That is vital. As well as the | :24:43. | :24:46.
painting, they have stolen her credit cards and debit cards and | :24:47. | :24:51.
used one of those cards at the bank and still ?500. | :24:52. | :24:57.
Let us talk about what we can do to protect our valuables. | :24:58. | :25:00.
Detective Sergeant Claire Hutcheon's an expert on art and antiques | :25:01. | :25:02.
Claire, a lot of people have heirlooms or | :25:03. | :25:05.
How can we make sure we can get it back if it's stolen? | :25:06. | :25:13.
Record the measurements and materials. Good quality photographs | :25:14. | :25:19.
are essential. Take your photo in clear, natural light, with a plain | :25:20. | :25:22.
background. Take more than one photo, take a picture of the whole, | :25:23. | :25:29.
concentrate on signatures and other marks or descriptions. Look at the | :25:30. | :25:33.
rear, are there stickers, more writing? Take photos. | :25:34. | :25:40.
We have this phone, this is life, can you take a couple? I know it is | :25:41. | :25:46.
not the best conditions. A photograph from the front. And from | :25:47. | :25:54.
the side. The other tip is to make sure you keep documentation handy as | :25:55. | :25:56.
well. A neighbour who put his own safety | :25:57. | :25:58.
at risk. He pulled a knife on me. And, do you have a good memory | :25:59. | :26:11.
for faces? Stay with us to find out whether | :26:12. | :26:14.
you could be a super-recogniser. Dealing with the fallout from | :26:15. | :26:18.
domestic violence is a significant and sometimes controversial part of | :26:19. | :26:22.
the day-to-day work of the police. But, now, a groundbreaking unit in | :26:23. | :26:30.
Greenwich is trying to prevent it One in every ten emergency calls is | :26:31. | :26:42.
about domestic violence. Thousands face daily abuse. | :26:43. | :26:48.
Every week in Britain, two women are killed by their partners. | :26:49. | :26:55.
But a team of detectives in Greenwich are out to stop the | :26:56. | :27:00.
attacks before they even happen. Grease paint and Tony Hannon are | :27:01. | :27:04.
part of a ground-breaking domestic violence intervention unit which | :27:05. | :27:07.
helps people escape from abusive relationships. | :27:08. | :27:12.
They think they have to put up with the abuse because they don't realise | :27:13. | :27:16.
what is happening for them. If you are at home and you think, I have | :27:17. | :27:20.
nowhere to go, my children have nowhere to go, then you are going to | :27:21. | :27:26.
put up with it. But we can help you. They have found, by working with the | :27:27. | :27:32.
victims, they can drastically cut repeat domestic violence offences. | :27:33. | :27:37.
With 2500 instances a year in Greenwich, the phone never stops | :27:38. | :27:40.
ringing. When was the last incident? Wendy | :27:41. | :27:47.
want this injunction? As soon as possible? | :27:48. | :27:50.
They head to a shelter to check on one of their cases. When they get | :27:51. | :27:56.
another call for help. We will come and move all your stuff | :27:57. | :28:01.
in and help you. You haven't got to worry about getting on buses with | :28:02. | :28:04.
your stuff and your baby. We will sort that out for you. | :28:05. | :28:12.
Helping people move away from a violent partner is just one of the | :28:13. | :28:16.
ways they have helped 300 victims over the past year. | :28:17. | :28:24.
But the domestic violence team isn't only about keeping abusive couples | :28:25. | :28:29.
apart. It keeps others together with a specialised counselling service. | :28:30. | :28:34.
Has there been any change? Have you been kinder to one another? | :28:35. | :28:38.
Definitely kinder. Mark and Amanda were the first to try the service | :28:39. | :28:44.
which has been running since Easter. We used to punch each other, slap | :28:45. | :28:48.
each other, I used to scratch him, kick him. And spit at him. | :28:49. | :28:56.
These sessions have transformed their lives. | :28:57. | :29:04.
It helps a lot. We don't argue indoors now. We won't talk until | :29:05. | :29:09.
counselling and discuss it there and then and it is sorted. | :29:10. | :29:12.
The scheme has been so successful the couple now plan to get married. | :29:13. | :29:22.
Back on the road, they are off to check on another success story. | :29:23. | :29:26.
We are going to visit one of the ladies we have been with recently. | :29:27. | :29:31.
She has been having problems with her ex-partner. We recently helped | :29:32. | :29:38.
to get a nonpolitician order. The woman who can't be named for legal | :29:39. | :29:40.
reasons used to live in fear. if your partner has had a drink. You | :29:41. | :30:00.
are standing there, nervous. You always have that worry on your mind. | :30:01. | :30:05.
With police help, she has been able to get away from her partner. It has | :30:06. | :30:13.
been brilliant. I have been to my solicitors and the courts. | :30:14. | :30:18.
Previously I have not had the help. It gave me that bit more confidence. | :30:19. | :30:24.
Now there is no way I would put myself in that situation because I | :30:25. | :30:29.
have got my life back. Domestic violence is a tough crime to police | :30:30. | :30:38.
will stop it takes its toll. You'll Asometimes you spend the whole day | :30:39. | :30:44.
with a victory. -- sometimes you spend the whole day with a big Tim | :30:45. | :30:51.
and it gets quite heavy. The best things with us, when do you spend | :30:52. | :30:57.
the day with someone and they are happy, it is a bit of a cliche but | :30:58. | :30:59.
it makes it all worthwhile. Some very important work there | :31:00. | :31:07.
and there's a list of organisations on the Crimewatch | :31:08. | :31:09.
website who can help if you yourself Today we're talking | :31:10. | :31:12.
about police who try to stop crimes And there's one group | :31:13. | :31:16.
of officers who go to extreme lengths - or should I say heights - | :31:17. | :31:19.
to make sure big events The Olympic Park has let | :31:20. | :31:43.
this structure. Why do you need a rope team? It makes sure that | :31:44. | :31:51.
buildings are safe prior to big events. There is a lot | :31:52. | :31:55.
buildings are safe prior to big work going on here at the moment. | :31:56. | :32:00.
Important evidentially as well. Historically, why was it setup? It | :32:01. | :32:07.
was set up when the IRA were operating in the UK. There were | :32:08. | :32:11.
concerns about in century devices on bridges. Last year we had that awful | :32:12. | :32:21.
helicopter crash and they were involved in that operation. They | :32:22. | :32:23.
were putting together pieces of evidence to make sure the | :32:24. | :32:29.
investigation could take place. Do they all have to be good climbers? | :32:30. | :32:35.
They are marine officers and they are trained to climb. We hope to | :32:36. | :32:42.
have a chat with Pete, one of the officers at the moment. You have | :32:43. | :32:46.
been going up and down a few times this morning. It is fantastic to | :32:47. | :32:51.
watch. Thank you. You must have done this all over the place. What is | :32:52. | :32:58.
your favourite? We are very privileged. My favourite is | :32:59. | :33:01.
Westminster Abbey or the Palace of Westminster, just because of the | :33:02. | :33:06.
history and that sort of thing. You have to be so careful because any | :33:07. | :33:10.
evidence you find is absolutely crucial. Absolutely. It is the same | :33:11. | :33:16.
job as if you are on the ground that it is more, located. Slightly more | :33:17. | :33:19.
complicated and you need a good head in their home, making off with ten | :33:20. | :33:32.
grand's worth of jewellery. I have never heard anything quite | :33:33. | :33:41.
like it. Not even the movies could portray a scream like that. It must | :33:42. | :33:52.
have been a terrifying experience. This businessman was spending the | :33:53. | :33:54.
afternoon at home with his family when the door bell rang. His wife | :33:55. | :34:02.
answered. When the man asked for an unfamiliar name, she assumed he must | :34:03. | :34:08.
have made a mistake. She said no one here. I said, sorry, the wrong | :34:09. | :34:15.
address. 15 minutes later, he returned. This time with a mate. He | :34:16. | :34:26.
said, sorry, someone has called for electric work in your house. I | :34:27. | :34:31.
said, no one has called. He said, I have to come and fix the electric | :34:32. | :34:38.
work. I refused again. He was completely unprepared for what | :34:39. | :34:44.
happened next. At that point, he was brutally attacked. He was punched, | :34:45. | :34:48.
pushed and forced back inside the premises. It was shocking. I do not | :34:49. | :34:57.
know why he came and punched me. Totally I am confused. The second | :34:58. | :35:03.
suspect had made his way upstairs and had started to search the | :35:04. | :35:07.
premises. He had found jewellery, gold jewellery. Downstairs, he tried | :35:08. | :35:23.
to fight back. I could not see any weapon or anything. I thought I | :35:24. | :35:27.
could fight with him. I did not have any other way. Then I punched him | :35:28. | :35:34.
passed a message to my wife to run away. The other rubber chased her | :35:35. | :35:41.
into the garden. Her screams immediately alerted their neighbour | :35:42. | :35:46.
to the month -- the nightmare unfolding next door. The hairs on | :35:47. | :35:53.
the back of my neck stood up. I knew something serious was going on. He | :35:54. | :35:58.
had her pinned up against the wall. I think he was trying to rip off her | :35:59. | :36:06.
necklace. He leapt over the fence to confront the violent attacker. The | :36:07. | :36:14.
robber made his way down the road with the neighbour in hot suit. I | :36:15. | :36:22.
got about 50 metres down the road and he stopped and pulled a knife on | :36:23. | :36:27.
me. At that point, I thought, let him go. As he got back to the house, | :36:28. | :36:44.
the other rubber pushed Sassi into the garden. He had been badly beaten | :36:45. | :36:52.
and his attackers had got away with nearly ?10,000 worth of gold | :36:53. | :36:58.
jewellery. This is a callous and clearly unprovoked attack. This must | :36:59. | :37:02.
have been an absolutely terrifying experience. This kind of thing does | :37:03. | :37:08.
not go on here. No one could believe what happened. It is shocking, | :37:09. | :37:10.
absolutely shocking. What do you know | :37:11. | :37:18.
about the people who did it? The first thing is the top with | :37:19. | :37:34.
goggles fitted into the herd. The first suspect was wearing | :37:35. | :37:38.
goggles fitted into the herd. The different, a sweatshirt material. A | :37:39. | :37:48.
pretty frightening outfit. There is some CCTV that could help. We have | :37:49. | :37:55.
footage of a suspect fleeing the scene over neighbouring gardens. | :37:56. | :37:59.
Anybody who would have seen someone running around, you want to hear | :38:00. | :38:07.
from them. It is quite distinctive. Hopefully you would recognise them. | :38:08. | :38:16.
What about the car? We are looking for a loo Audi which was seen | :38:17. | :38:25.
driving at speed at the time. -- blue. | :38:26. | :38:29.
Now today we've been looking at how the police are able to spot | :38:30. | :38:32.
faces in a crowd and DC Kezia Khan from Lancashire Constabulary would | :38:33. | :38:35.
like your help in identifying some football hooligans | :38:36. | :38:37.
Welcome. Tell me about this case you are looking at. Following the | :38:38. | :38:49.
Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday fixture at Burnley' at home ground, some of | :38:50. | :38:55.
the fans went to the Burnley miners club for some drinks. Shortly after | :38:56. | :39:03.
6pm, a disturbance broke out. The violence spread and there were 60 | :39:04. | :39:07.
people fighting in the Fourier. That is massive disorder. There were lots | :39:08. | :39:14.
of women, children, normal people having a drink and enjoying | :39:15. | :39:19.
themselves. This must have been absolutely terrifying. Absolutely. | :39:20. | :39:23.
There were women, children, people with disabilities. They have | :39:24. | :39:28.
witnessed people sustaining injuries and damage to property. Lets have a | :39:29. | :39:32.
look at five people who have been caught on CCTV. These are five | :39:33. | :39:37.
people that you really do want to identify. I urge people to have a | :39:38. | :39:45.
look. They will recognise them. We have to say football violence, there | :39:46. | :39:50.
is no place for it for whatsoever. You will come down on them. These | :39:51. | :39:57.
people know who they are. The public know who they are. Thank you for | :39:58. | :40:00.
joining us. Well, if you think you know who | :40:01. | :40:04.
these five are then get in touch Or you can call Crimestoppers | :40:05. | :40:07.
anonymously on 0800 555 111. Now, earlier in the programme, we | :40:08. | :40:13.
heard about how police officers with a very good knack of recognising | :40:14. | :40:16.
people had been working to cut crime One of those super-recognisers is | :40:17. | :40:19.
PC Dale Nufer. That is what they say. When did you | :40:20. | :40:33.
realise you had the talent? I did not. I was told I was getting a lot | :40:34. | :40:41.
of hits with recognition. Is that good at remembering names and faces? | :40:42. | :40:46.
No, I am just good at remembering faces. Once it is committed to | :40:47. | :40:54.
memory, I do not tend to forget it. If it is a nasty crime, I will never | :40:55. | :40:59.
forget them. I do not remember all the faces. It sticks in my head. I | :41:00. | :41:05.
do not know why. You have had success. Tell me how it has been | :41:06. | :41:11.
working in practice? Better than people expected. I will find a crime | :41:12. | :41:16.
being committed and I will see it again on CCTV. The same person | :41:17. | :41:21.
another crime and I will build that up. Eventually I will have ten | :41:22. | :41:28.
crimes committed by one person. Instead of being on trial for one | :41:29. | :41:34.
defence, it is all of them. I know it is having a big impact with the | :41:35. | :41:44.
Metropolitan police. Earlier, I was set a test. I have not had much time | :41:45. | :41:50.
to study it. It is difficult without the hair and just a phase. I think | :41:51. | :41:56.
that is Billy Connelly. He is very, very well-known. I guess I should | :41:57. | :42:01.
known that. The one with the freckles is a bit more tricky. | :42:02. | :42:08.
Prince Harry? Well done. Well done. This one, Oprah Winfrey. I am not | :42:09. | :42:15.
sure of that one on the end. I am not a super recogniser. Please tell | :42:16. | :42:29.
us they are following up a very strong lead as a result of your | :42:30. | :42:32.
information. Lots have offered to help after the charity was broken | :42:33. | :42:38.
into in Northumbria. ?7,000 worth of equipment stolen and people offering | :42:39. | :42:41.
to replace it. One man has offered to replace everything stolen. | :42:42. | :42:50.
Tomorrow we are heading to the heart of the London Docklands where we | :42:51. | :42:54.
will be following police divers as they cracked down on gang crime. I | :42:55. | :42:59.
am preparing to get my feet a little bit wet. If you want to test out | :43:00. | :43:04.
your super recogniser skills, take another look at the CCTV on the | :43:05. | :43:08.
website. Finally believe you at another look at today's wanted | :43:09. | :43:12.
faces. Somebody knows where these people are. If you do then call us. | :43:13. | :43:14.
Thank you for watching. Take care. | :43:15. | :43:18. |
