cash. Today, the conmen who tricked | :00:27. | :00:28.
83-year-old Constance out of her I knew I had been ripped off. | :00:29. | :00:31.
83-year-old Constance out of her I knew I had And the end of an era for | :00:32. | :00:36.
police horse Harrison. A huge occasion for him, and for nearly | :00:37. | :00:41.
50,000 Man City fans. I will really miss him. He has been brilliant. You | :00:42. | :00:44.
are watching Crimewatch road show. Welcome to Crimewatch road show. We | :00:45. | :01:06.
are on the front line with today's police, with appeals to crack crime | :01:07. | :01:10.
and advice on how you can stay safe. Also on today's show: A terrifying | :01:11. | :01:16.
ordeal for a pub landlord and his wife. | :01:17. | :01:21.
Never been robbed, never been threatened with being robbed, so it | :01:22. | :01:26.
was out of the blue for me. And the glamorous young woman who lured a | :01:27. | :01:28.
pensioner out of his home so that her pals could rob him. | :01:29. | :01:33.
Today, we are back with Greater Manchester police, and Sian is at | :01:34. | :01:36.
the home of the force's mounted unit. | :01:37. | :01:42.
We are at Hough End Stables. Greater Manchester is one of only 11 forces | :01:43. | :01:47.
in the country still to have its own mounted unit. Later, we will be | :01:48. | :01:51.
finding out how these horses and that officers are trained to deal | :01:52. | :01:54.
with those noisy disturbances where they really come into their own. | :01:55. | :02:00.
First, the rogues who claimed an elderly woman's roof was rotten, and | :02:01. | :02:04.
left her having to count every penny. | :02:05. | :02:13.
83-year-old Constance is fiercely independent and has lived alone in | :02:14. | :02:17.
the same house in Rochdale for nearly 30 years. One Friday in | :02:18. | :02:20.
March, she was visited by a tradesman, who had some bad news. I | :02:21. | :02:27.
was cleaning my living room windows when this knock came on the door. | :02:28. | :02:33.
But when I went to the door, there was nobody there. But when I put my | :02:34. | :02:37.
head out, he was at the other side of the gate. The man seemed | :02:38. | :02:43.
knowledgeable and persuasive, as he pointed out a minor fault with | :02:44. | :02:49.
const's roof. He said, I will fix your chimney for you for ?40. I | :02:50. | :02:55.
said, that is not bad. He said, I will do it all and check it for you. | :02:56. | :03:01.
I said all right. After the weekend, the man came back to carry out the | :03:02. | :03:04.
work, this time with a companion. But there was a problem. The simple | :03:05. | :03:09.
repair job on the chimney had become more complicated. He brought a piece | :03:10. | :03:14.
of wood and said look, it is all rotten. He said it was storm damage. | :03:15. | :03:21.
He told Constance that the repair would now cost her thousands of | :03:22. | :03:27.
pounds. He said, are you insured? I said yeah, I am with Churchill. He | :03:28. | :03:32.
said, I do a lot of jobs with them. He said, you can claim on your | :03:33. | :03:41.
insurance. So he said ?1650. I said, I haven't got that kind of money | :03:42. | :03:44.
here and now. Will you take a cheque? No, he said, I want cash, | :03:45. | :03:50.
because you will have to have scaffolding up. The police believe | :03:51. | :03:55.
that Constance was deliberately targeted by the so-called builders. | :03:56. | :04:00.
I think sometimes they look at the addresses when they go to areas. | :04:01. | :04:06.
They will look at how it seems on the outside and know it is an old | :04:07. | :04:10.
person's address, maybe because it is not as modern as the others. | :04:11. | :04:15.
Concerned now about the state of the roof, Constance fetched the money | :04:16. | :04:20.
from the bank. It was funny. The girl at the bank said, is it for | :04:21. | :04:24.
something special? I said, just some building work. Oh, she said, I hope | :04:25. | :04:29.
you don't get ripped off. When she got back, the older man was at her | :04:30. | :04:33.
home. He told her he was waiting for the scaffolding to arrive. He said, | :04:34. | :04:42.
have you got the money? I said yes, it is in an envelope. Next thing, he | :04:43. | :04:48.
snatched it out of my hand and went off. The fraudster left, assuring | :04:49. | :04:53.
Constance that he would be back in a few hours. So I sat here, waiting, | :04:54. | :05:00.
and the scaffolding never arrived. That was when I knew I had been | :05:01. | :05:07.
ripped off. Just terribly upset. The police say the men need to be caught | :05:08. | :05:11.
quickly, before they target more vulnerable and elderly people. For | :05:12. | :05:17.
me, it takes me to my own family and my grandmother and how I would feel | :05:18. | :05:20.
if somebody had done that to her. It makes you very angry and wanting to | :05:21. | :05:26.
catch these males, because it affect people like Constance a lot more | :05:27. | :05:30.
than even they can imagine. It really does knock the confidence. | :05:31. | :05:34.
The stress of losing her savings has affected Constance's already poor | :05:35. | :05:37.
health, and now she has to watch every penny. I only buy what I have | :05:38. | :05:45.
to buy. And before I go shopping, I calculate every item. I know what | :05:46. | :05:52.
they cost. And I make sure I don't go over that limit. I am limiting | :05:53. | :05:58.
myself to money to buy food to put on the table. The crime had knocked | :05:59. | :06:04.
Constance's confidence and her independence. Even now, I make sure | :06:05. | :06:11.
the fund door is locked. I never used to. In all the 28 years I have | :06:12. | :06:15.
lived here, I never did that, but I do now. | :06:16. | :06:24.
Constance has been badly affected by this. Inspector Michelle Hughes, | :06:25. | :06:26.
what do you know about the men who did this? Constance gave us a really | :06:27. | :06:33.
good description of the two men, and we have produced e-fit pictures of | :06:34. | :06:37.
them. The first male is described as in his 30s, quite a muscular build, | :06:38. | :06:42.
wearing dark clothing. He is a white male. And the second one is a male | :06:43. | :06:47.
in his 80s, which is unusual. He is five foot two, skinny build, but he | :06:48. | :06:52.
was wearing a knitted woollen beige hat, which might stand out. And you | :06:53. | :06:56.
think they have done something like this before? People like this target | :06:57. | :07:02.
the vulnerable. They make a living out of doing this. So they will | :07:03. | :07:10.
definitely have done this. And if people are worried, what is your | :07:11. | :07:13.
advice? If somebody knocks on your door, do not get work done. Speak to | :07:14. | :07:19.
families, get recommendations, go to a reputable builder. There is a | :07:20. | :07:27.
trusted neighbour scheme, or where they can check these people out for | :07:28. | :07:33.
you. And how is Constance now? She is getting there. It really does | :07:34. | :07:37.
affect people. They target the most vulnerable, and the confidence issue | :07:38. | :07:41.
is the worst thing for people like Constance, but she will get there. | :07:42. | :07:45.
We wish her well. Sadly, it is not just so-called | :07:46. | :07:49.
builders who con you out of your money. I'm joined now by the DC | :07:50. | :07:53.
Katrina Grimmett from Hampshire police. There are two men you really | :07:54. | :07:57.
want to trace today because of a nasty scam they have done? Yes, last | :07:58. | :08:02.
November I was contacted by a 66-year-old male who reported that | :08:03. | :08:06.
he had been conned out of his life savings and the total amount of | :08:07. | :08:11.
?120,000. A massive amount. How have they done this? The victim had not | :08:12. | :08:16.
long been discharged from hospital for mental health problems when he | :08:17. | :08:18.
was contacted by these men. They told him of an investment | :08:19. | :08:23.
opportunity in a mobile home Park in Surrey. They made it sound like good | :08:24. | :08:27.
rockets could be made. And of course there was no business, it was just a | :08:28. | :08:33.
scam. How did they get the money from him? One of the males, calling | :08:34. | :08:39.
himself Phil O'Brien, would contact the victim on his mobile phone. He | :08:40. | :08:43.
would ask for money for things like building materials. He would give | :08:44. | :08:47.
the victim a day and time the money would be collected. Another man | :08:48. | :08:50.
calling himself Andy Rodgers would travel by train to Brockenhurst in | :08:51. | :08:54.
Hampshire, get a taxi to the big's home address and collect the money. | :08:55. | :08:59.
On one occasion, the victim was withdrawing cash amounts ranging up | :09:00. | :09:03.
to ?10,000. And they still wanted more? Yes, even when the victim's | :09:04. | :09:09.
savings had run out, these men encouraged him to take out personal | :09:10. | :09:13.
loans give more money, which he did. And when the money dried up, these | :09:14. | :09:18.
two men disappeared. So now he is in debt, faxed these people. Your | :09:19. | :09:21.
victim is a quick thinking fellow, and he used his mobile phone to | :09:22. | :09:26.
capture one of them? Yes, one day he recorded the mail on his mobile | :09:27. | :09:27.
phone. So who is this? recorded the mail on his mobile | :09:28. | :09:32.
his name as Andy Rogers. recorded the mail on his mobile | :09:33. | :09:36.
in the world. That is a very clear image of that person, which is | :09:37. | :09:41.
billion and quick thinking. He did not capture the other person, but | :09:42. | :09:48.
you have got any fit? Yes, we have an e-fit. This man called himself | :09:49. | :09:52.
Phil O'Brien. The victim described him as a white male, late 40s, | :09:53. | :09:56.
stocky build, with short cropped hair. The sad thing is that they may | :09:57. | :10:00.
not just have done this, they may have done it to others. So you want | :10:01. | :10:05.
people to get in touch if Iraq does any of those people. Thank you. If | :10:06. | :10:12.
you recognise either of those men, please get in touch. Our details are | :10:13. | :10:16.
on your screen. If you need another look, go to the website. | :10:17. | :10:22.
Now, time for today's wanted faces. First up is Robert Emanuel Patrick | :10:23. | :10:26.
Donovan, who also uses the name David Green. The 57-year-old failed | :10:27. | :10:30.
to return to Ford open prison, where he was the thing a life sentence for | :10:31. | :10:34.
murder and is now on the run. He should not be approached. If you | :10:35. | :10:39.
know where he is, dial 999. He is seven foot -- five tall and of slim | :10:40. | :10:45.
build. Next is 25-year-old Luke Jones, who | :10:46. | :10:51.
is also known as Kid, K and Kilo. He is wanted for questioning by | :10:52. | :10:54.
officers in the West Midlands in connection with the kidnap and | :10:55. | :10:57.
torture of a man. Jones has links to the Birmingham and London areas and | :10:58. | :11:01.
is described as dangerous. He should not be approached. | :11:02. | :11:10.
Now, this is Dean Scahill. He was jailed in 2006 four possession of a | :11:11. | :11:15.
firearm and is on an indeterminate life sentence. He was released | :11:16. | :11:19.
early, but failed to stick with the conditions of that release and is | :11:20. | :11:21.
now wanted back in prison. He has been on the run since January this | :11:22. | :11:26.
year and has links to the Liverpool area and speaks with a local accent. | :11:27. | :11:31.
Finally today, Laimonas Cepauskas, who was charged with GBH with intent | :11:32. | :11:36.
after a man was attacked with a crowbar and hammer. He was due in | :11:37. | :11:40.
court a year ago, but failed to turn up and a warrant was issued for his | :11:41. | :11:43.
arrest. The 41-year-old has links to Lithuania, the West Midlands, Avon | :11:44. | :11:49.
and Somerset and South Wales. He is six tall and described of being of | :11:50. | :11:54.
extremely heavy build. If you recognise any of them, pick up the | :11:55. | :11:56.
phone. Or you can e-mail us. | :11:57. | :12:17.
Still to come, way after closing time, what are these men doing | :12:18. | :12:21.
hanging around a pub just before a violent robbery? One had a bat. They | :12:22. | :12:28.
were screaming, get out, get the keys, get the money. | :12:29. | :12:35.
Welcome to the indoor arena at Greater Manchester police's mounted | :12:36. | :12:39.
unit. This is where the horses are trained for riots and crowd control. | :12:40. | :12:44.
In a minute, we will meet one of the newest recruits, but first let's | :12:45. | :12:48.
find out how they are prepared for life on the frontline. | :12:49. | :12:56.
A full-blown riot. It does not get any harder for police horses. Years | :12:57. | :12:59.
of training prepares them for the loud noises and sudden movements. | :13:00. | :13:12.
Here is where that work begins. Sergeant Cara Charlesworth is | :13:13. | :13:19.
coaching both horses and riders. We use formations called wedges and | :13:20. | :13:24.
half wedges. We will demonstrate the full wedge for you next. You just | :13:25. | :13:30.
create a V shape that you can escort things through. Use it for vehicles | :13:31. | :13:34.
or people. The horses way up to a ton each, making it all the more | :13:35. | :13:40.
important that in any serious situation, their riders are in full | :13:41. | :13:45.
control. This might look like a ceremonial exercise, but it is | :13:46. | :13:50.
actually a way of preparing the horses for movements and | :13:51. | :13:54.
distractions at big events. Start walking in a circle to the left | :13:55. | :13:58.
bomber and Cara and Cassie, you walk behind. The horse is a flight | :13:59. | :14:05.
animal. Their natural instinct would be to flee. Those instincts are | :14:06. | :14:15.
hardwired into the horse. Cassie's horse is momentarily startled by the | :14:16. | :14:20.
flag. She brings him to a halt until he recovers. Cassie, what made him | :14:21. | :14:28.
react? I moved the flag to the other side of his neck. He did not like | :14:29. | :14:36.
it. So horses learned through repetition. Once you have worked out | :14:37. | :14:41.
what has triggered a lack of confidence, you would then want to | :14:42. | :14:45.
repeat that again and again until you get the confidence. It may all | :14:46. | :14:50.
seem a little tame and elegant in the classroom, but this is about | :14:51. | :14:53.
building up these horses to the point where they can cope with some | :14:54. | :14:57.
of the toughest events the police have to deal with. It is very | :14:58. | :15:01.
satisfying to see the horses doing an operational job with a police | :15:02. | :15:05.
officer on board full is but that is what we are here for, so the whole | :15:06. | :15:09.
team pulls together to make that happen. | :15:10. | :15:12.
Right, this is Rambo, the unit's latest horse. He only began his | :15:13. | :15:18.
training last week. Like all police horses here in Manchester, he will | :15:19. | :15:21.
be given an official name - and later in the programme I'm going to | :15:22. | :15:25.
be allowed to choose it. He's going to go off now and do a little | :15:26. | :15:34.
Bit of exercise. How do you get rambler ready for action? First of | :15:35. | :15:42.
all you have to pick the horses with the right temperament. They have to | :15:43. | :15:50.
be used to the city environment. We see all sorts of ways of doing that | :15:51. | :15:54.
in the film. It must be great when you see them ready to go out there? | :15:55. | :15:58.
Some of these situations are pretty chaotic. It is great for the whole | :15:59. | :16:06.
team to see the horses come through the training process and become | :16:07. | :16:10.
successful police horses. You are going to do a bit more training with | :16:11. | :16:14.
Rambo. He has got quite a bit of work to do. Let's talk to Emma. You | :16:15. | :16:23.
have policed some huge situations? I have. The biggest event in recent | :16:24. | :16:31.
times had to be last year's homecoming for Manchester United | :16:32. | :16:33.
just after Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. It was | :16:34. | :16:37.
immense. The noise was beyond anything I have ever experienced. It | :16:38. | :16:42.
was a testing day for the horses. Three plus hours of clearing the | :16:43. | :16:46.
streets in order to make room for the bus. They were amazing. I cannot | :16:47. | :16:52.
fault them. They are fantastic animals. I know the crowds largely | :16:53. | :16:57.
due responded really well to them. We have met the newest recruit. | :16:58. | :17:01.
Later we will meet the veteran horse, Harrison. Now we have got | :17:02. | :17:12.
some CCTV for you. Will you recognise any of these criminals? | :17:13. | :17:17.
This punter in the jacket with the bright green hood fancies his | :17:18. | :17:21.
chances. He has spotted cash behind the counter at this bookmakers, so | :17:22. | :17:27.
he slips his coat off to snatch it. But he is not prepared to gamble | :17:28. | :17:32.
just yet. Moments later he takes his jacket off and rolled up his | :17:33. | :17:37.
sleeve. This time he goes for it. He reaches into the tail area and | :17:38. | :17:42.
pockets ?200. This image is clear as a bell. Who is he? Call us. This man | :17:43. | :17:51.
is either very hungry or up to no good. He is using a crowbar to break | :17:52. | :17:58.
into an Italian takeaway in Cardiff. It is not exactly rich pickings | :17:59. | :18:02.
inside. He searches the place by torchlight, then decides to take the | :18:03. | :18:09.
till float, containing just ?10. He ducks out to tidy away his tools. | :18:10. | :18:14.
Maybe he has missed something because he goes inside for another | :18:15. | :18:18.
cheeky peek. There is nothing. He grabs his bag and walks off. He is | :18:19. | :18:24.
wearing a mask but we reckon you can name the man responsible for this | :18:25. | :18:29.
Italian job. Police can only do so much. We are in the heart of | :18:30. | :18:36.
historic York. This man is not out sightseeing in the early hours of | :18:37. | :18:37.
the morning. sightseeing in the early hours of | :18:38. | :18:44.
steal whatever he can find. First, sightseeing in the early hours of | :18:45. | :18:47.
he has got to get in. That has taken care of that. Then he scuttles | :18:48. | :18:53.
across the place, looking for the till. This must be thirsty work | :18:54. | :18:55.
because he has got a drink. till. This must be thirsty work | :18:56. | :19:01.
the cash? With the till empty, all he manages to snatch is some | :19:02. | :19:03.
the cash? With the till empty, all change. He must realise it is not | :19:04. | :19:07.
his lucky day because he calls it quits and creeps back out of the | :19:08. | :19:12.
bar. At least he will have change for the bus home. Name, please? If | :19:13. | :19:21.
you recognise anybody, give us a call. Or sent a text. -- send. You | :19:22. | :19:38.
can e-mail us, too. You can watch all of the CCTV on the website. | :19:39. | :19:40.
to go off now and do a little Now burglary is a common but | :19:41. | :19:42.
disturbing crime which affects people right across the country. | :19:43. | :19:48.
Here in the North West there's a particular gang responsible for a | :19:49. | :19:51.
wave of offences. Thankfully we can show you what they look like. Before | :19:52. | :19:53.
we do, PC Ben Greenwood is here to The offences were committed on the | :19:54. | :20:02.
12th and 14th of March this year. The men have arrived and left the | :20:03. | :20:09.
scene in a black BMW. The group arrived in the grey BMW one series. | :20:10. | :20:17.
They circled the place a number of times, dropping a number of the gang | :20:18. | :20:20.
members off on foot. They approached the address, knocked on the front | :20:21. | :20:21.
door. They made for the rear the address, knocked on the front | :20:22. | :20:27.
property and attempted to force entry using crowbars. You have got | :20:28. | :20:33.
some images? We have. They have been captured on CCTV. There is some good | :20:34. | :20:40.
footage at a petrol station in Lancaster prior to one of the | :20:41. | :20:44.
offences. What did they get away with? One address they stole in | :20:45. | :20:52.
excess of ?70,000. Other addresses, slightly less. But extremely high | :20:53. | :20:57.
value items. Some of the items are irreplaceable. Items belonging to | :20:58. | :21:04.
loved ones that have passed away. Obviously irreplaceable. Jewry has | :21:05. | :21:11.
been taken. Irreplaceable to many people. That is bound to have had a | :21:12. | :21:16.
huge impact on the victim 's? It is. The jewellery stolen was wedding | :21:17. | :21:26.
presents. It is all 22 carat and 24 carat yellow gold and includes full | :21:27. | :21:29.
set of necklaces, rings, earrings and bangles. Have you got any leads? | :21:30. | :21:36.
We have a registration plate for the car. That has been seen on the | :21:37. | :21:43.
vehicle for four of the offences. There is another registration plate | :21:44. | :21:45.
that has been seen on the vehicle as well. If anybody has seen this | :21:46. | :21:52.
plate, or anybody acting suspiciously around this vehicle, | :21:53. | :22:02.
come forward. Thank you. Pub landlords Danny Chambers and his | :22:03. | :22:05.
wife Tina have been in the trade for years. It can be a tough business | :22:06. | :22:11.
and they have seen everything. This one is particularly nasty. | :22:12. | :22:19.
I have run pubs and clubs that 20 to 25 years. Everything from town | :22:20. | :22:29.
centre pubs to nightclubs, and local pubs, which is what I have got at | :22:30. | :22:34.
the moment. One night in April Danny and his wife called time before | :22:35. | :22:40.
shutting up the pub as normal. It was a Sunday night. Not the pub up. | :22:41. | :22:46.
Staff cleared out. Put the alarm on. Locked up, went to bed. Danny and | :22:47. | :22:58.
Tina were soon asleep. But outside CCTV cameras captured these men | :22:59. | :23:04.
checking the outside of the pub. At 3am you will see some males peering | :23:05. | :23:16.
in by the door, by the windows. They climb across a first floor | :23:17. | :23:21.
conservatory roof area and force a spare bedroom window and gain entry. | :23:22. | :23:25.
Three o'clock in the morning, fast asleep. I could hear a noise and | :23:26. | :23:30.
commotion in the bedroom. I looked up and could hear the wife | :23:31. | :23:34.
screaming. Three guys around the bed. They were all dressed up in | :23:35. | :23:39.
black with masks on. The men were heavily armed. One with a machete, | :23:40. | :23:44.
the other two had a baton and a baseball bat. You are lying there in | :23:45. | :23:50.
bed fast asleep and they are there. You have got no time to be prepared. | :23:51. | :23:58.
It is a shock. Screaming at me to get up, get the keys, get the money. | :23:59. | :24:06.
He said my wife was staying up here with the other guy. It was | :24:07. | :24:11.
horrendous. The intruders were after the weekend takings, which were | :24:12. | :24:14.
locked away in a safe downstairs. They forced Danny to take them to | :24:15. | :24:19.
the money while one of the gang held teen upstairs. I was worried | :24:20. | :24:25.
something was going to go wrong. I was not worried about giving them | :24:26. | :24:28.
the money. I did not want to leave my wife upstairs with a lad with a | :24:29. | :24:34.
two foot machete. Even after Danny open the safe, the couple's ordeal | :24:35. | :24:43.
was not over. When the -- when they got the money they asked me where | :24:44. | :24:46.
the rest of it was. There was no rest of it. They said, let's go | :24:47. | :24:51.
upstairs and will ask your wife. Obviously that is horrendous. Back | :24:52. | :24:57.
upstairs, he struggled to convince the men that they already had all | :24:58. | :25:03.
his money. They had every penny. They took all the money out of the | :25:04. | :25:09.
safe. I had no more money. Finally convinced, the gang tied Danny and | :25:10. | :25:14.
Tina before escaping with the cash. We were relieved more than anything | :25:15. | :25:19.
else that we were being tied up. The ordeal was going to be over. And | :25:20. | :25:24.
then we untied each other. Ring the police. | :25:25. | :25:50.
It is imported from the police twice -- police's point of view to find | :25:51. | :25:58.
the people who have committed this kind of clap. But Danny and Tina are | :25:59. | :26:06.
decent people. They have suffered. We are trying to get closure for | :26:07. | :26:09.
them. They are struggling at the moment to come to terms with, will | :26:10. | :26:15.
it happen again? After a week goes by, it starts to sink in what has | :26:16. | :26:19.
happened. It has affected my wife pretty badly. It is something I | :26:20. | :26:23.
never want to go through again. I will never forget it. I don't want | :26:24. | :26:29.
to happen to summer deals. I really would not want anybody else to go | :26:30. | :26:35.
through it, especially if they did not have any money on site or | :26:36. | :26:38.
something went wrong for them. It could have been a lot worse. A | :26:39. | :26:45.
terrifying ordeal for Danny and Tina. DC Simon Johnson joins me now. | :26:46. | :26:51.
You have got some CCTV. You have got descriptions of these men? We have. | :26:52. | :26:57.
Three white males, five foot five, five foot ten and six foot. They are | :26:58. | :27:00.
wearing dark clothing and balaclavas. One of them has a | :27:01. | :27:06.
long-sleeved dark top on with three stripes down the arm. It looks like | :27:07. | :27:12.
an Adidas top. A lot of money was taken. You think that could help you | :27:13. | :27:18.
in your investigation? Yes, a large amount of money was taken. About | :27:19. | :27:23.
?11,000 in total. ?10,000 in cash and the rest in change. Somebody | :27:24. | :27:27.
will have had a lot of money that week and will have been telling | :27:28. | :27:30.
people about it or spending that money. Also, iPhones and a watch? | :27:31. | :27:38.
Yes, Danny's watch was taken. A black ceramic male gents watch. | :27:39. | :27:47.
Security has been boosted. Tell us about the equipment that was used? | :27:48. | :27:54.
Security has been improved now. Obviously the brewery have covered | :27:55. | :28:03.
at with alarms and CCTV upgrades. The thieves brought a ladder with | :28:04. | :28:07.
them. A 15 foot single letter, which looked like it formed part of a two | :28:08. | :28:13.
or three ladder system. I want to know where that is from. Ideally, | :28:14. | :28:17.
people walking through the streets at 3M carrying a ladder would have | :28:18. | :28:23.
stuck out to passing motorists. -- 3am. Also, peace a washing line was | :28:24. | :28:28.
used to tied Danny and Tina. Thank you. Let's hope we can get some | :28:29. | :28:33.
information. Today, West Yorkshire police have asked for your help in | :28:34. | :28:37.
finding the vicious robbers who forced their way into the home of an | :28:38. | :28:42.
80-year-old man in Leeds. Let's look at some CCTV footage taken before | :28:43. | :28:46.
the incident. It is about ten minutes to ten at night on the 17th | :28:47. | :28:54.
of April. A glamorous looking woman in high heels calls at the old | :28:55. | :28:56.
man's house and in high heels calls at the old | :28:57. | :29:00.
phone. When he refuses, she walks away. Not long after | :29:01. | :29:05.
phone. When he refuses, she walks to shut his gait and he | :29:06. | :29:08.
phone. When he refuses, she walks same woman sitting in a car with two | :29:09. | :29:08.
men. They him to the ground. They forced their | :29:09. | :29:17.
way into his home, dragging him inside. Once inside, and the | :29:18. | :29:25.
80-year-old with a knife they ransacked his | :29:26. | :29:30.
80-year-old with a knife they from a Samsung tablet, a mobile | :29:31. | :29:36.
80-year-old with a knife they phone and some of watches. The man | :29:37. | :29:38.
was left with cuts and bruises and badly shaken. Do you | :29:39. | :29:43.
was left with cuts and bruises and glamorous cold caller or her two | :29:44. | :29:44.
friends? Please help us catch them. If I have a safe It is busy. I am | :29:45. | :30:21.
here twice a week. And it is different because they are police | :30:22. | :30:25.
horses? Yes. Basically, with the amount of road work they do, they | :30:26. | :30:31.
wear their shoes out. And you have got to balance them as well, | :30:32. | :30:37.
apparently? Yes. Each horseshoe is an individual fit to each limb on | :30:38. | :30:41.
each horse. That horse has to work on that foot for four weeks. So if | :30:42. | :30:48.
it is out of balance, there will be unequal pressures on the joints. So | :30:49. | :30:53.
to maintain an optimal balance, it is ideal to keep them bang on. These | :30:54. | :31:02.
horseshoes take a lot of wear and tear, as Robert was explaining the | :31:03. | :31:06.
mud because these police horses in Manchester are out and about. One of | :31:07. | :31:11.
their main jobs is policing at football matches. They have two very | :31:12. | :31:16.
successful teams here in Manchester. We went out and about with the | :31:17. | :31:18.
mounted unit when they a very important game. | :31:19. | :31:23.
10am on a Sunday morning, and it is a very important game. | :31:24. | :31:28.
all go at the Hough End Stables. It is the last weekend of the football | :31:29. | :31:33.
season, and in just a few hours, these horses and their officers will | :31:34. | :31:37.
be policing eight crucial game. It is a big day for veterinary police | :31:38. | :31:43.
horse Harrison and his rider, PC Lisa Russell, as Harrison is about | :31:44. | :31:50.
to retire. He has been here since 2004. Harry is the grand old age of | :31:51. | :31:58.
18 now, so here's an old man. And your last match. I don't know how I | :31:59. | :32:06.
feel about that. You do get attached to them. He looks after me, I look | :32:07. | :32:12.
after him, I hope. We get on well, so I get a bit choked. Today's match | :32:13. | :32:20.
is crucial. If the home team beats or even manages a draw against West | :32:21. | :32:22.
Ham, they will win the Premier League title. By 2.30, the 47,000 | :32:23. | :32:30.
fans are beginning to arrive at the ground. Lisa is deployed with | :32:31. | :32:36.
colleague PC Emma Whittenbury to help manage the crowds. We have been | :32:37. | :32:43.
told that you need to go. It is not long before things start to kick | :32:44. | :32:47.
off, as a Man City supporter tries to gain entry to the part of the | :32:48. | :32:52.
ground reserved for away fans. He is trying to get in the away end, but | :32:53. | :32:57.
he is wearing a City shirt. The fan takes off his shirt, hoping that | :32:58. | :33:00.
will persuade B Stuarts to let him in. They have taken the ticket of | :33:01. | :33:09.
him. He has been advised that he can't get in, and we are asking him | :33:10. | :33:13.
to leave. Harrison seems to be a favourite with regular fans. | :33:14. | :33:23.
Lovely! I adore them. Every week, I bring them mints, and every week, | :33:24. | :33:29.
they are darlings. There is not one nasty one. Every time we see them, | :33:30. | :33:37.
we give them a stroke. You feel a bit safer with the horses around. | :33:38. | :33:42.
The roar from the crowd let the officers know that the game has | :33:43. | :33:45.
kicked off, but Harrison is used to the commotion. Very noisy, as you | :33:46. | :33:49.
can hear, so even for the best horse, they have to cope with a lot, | :33:50. | :33:54.
and the wind and the rain. He has been really good. Pleased with him. | :33:55. | :34:02.
With the supporters safely inside, there is time for the horses and the | :34:03. | :34:07.
officers to take things easy and for the officers to listen to the match. | :34:08. | :34:14.
They are saying that big chair was City scoring a second goal, so it is | :34:15. | :34:17.
fair to say that they are probably going to win the cup. They will be | :34:18. | :34:21.
very happy when they come out, and very noisy. And this horse is going | :34:22. | :34:27.
to be very busy. Last year, lots of people tried to get in from the | :34:28. | :34:32.
pubs. So we will see. We will be busy. With the home team victorious, | :34:33. | :34:38.
fans who have watched in nearby pubs start to arrive, desperate to join | :34:39. | :34:42.
the thousands already celebrating on the pitch. The horses are quickly | :34:43. | :34:47.
deployed to block the crowd and form an effective area, keeping the newly | :34:48. | :34:50.
arrived fans away from the ground. an effective area, keeping the newly | :34:51. | :35:01.
The fans are not happy, and a stand-off develops. But the line | :35:02. | :35:08.
holds, until the crowd eventually settles down. Just as the officers | :35:09. | :35:15.
think it is all over, there is another challenge chief. We have | :35:16. | :35:18.
just had a message passed through from a command to let us know that | :35:19. | :35:25.
chilly, they are very happy for City and they will be letting | :35:26. | :35:31.
pyrotechnics of from the roof of the stadium. So for us, that puts us in | :35:32. | :35:37.
a bit of a predicament, because there will be lots of bangs and | :35:38. | :35:49.
flashes. The horses are not too happy, but they soon settle down. It | :35:50. | :35:53.
is time for the crowd to continue celebrating elsewhere, and for | :35:54. | :35:56.
Harrison to leave his last football match. Well done! I am really | :35:57. | :36:04.
gutted. I will miss him. He has been brilliant today. It has been tough | :36:05. | :36:08.
for him, very noisy. You can go home and have a rest now, put your feet | :36:09. | :36:15.
up. That is it. I will be sad. Mixed feelings, because it is fabulous | :36:16. | :36:19.
that he will be retired and have a nice chilled out and enjoy it. For | :36:20. | :36:25.
Harrison and the rest of the team, it is time to head back to the | :36:26. | :36:36.
stables. And here he is, Harrison, the star of the show, having a rest | :36:37. | :36:43.
that his stable. Gorgeous horse. Lisa, we saw how attached you have | :36:44. | :36:47.
been to Harrison over your career with him. What happens next for | :36:48. | :36:54.
you? I have away already been introduced to other horses to see if | :36:55. | :36:57.
I can get the same bond I have got with Harrison. Hopefully, that is | :36:58. | :37:01.
something to come for the future. I am really going to miss you. I bet | :37:02. | :37:08.
you are. You build up trust over the years. Absolutely. We ask him to go | :37:09. | :37:16.
into situations that are not natural to him, so he needs to trust me and | :37:17. | :37:21.
I need to trust him 100%. And we have got that, so I will miss him. | :37:22. | :37:25.
Hope the league, I will get that with another good horse -- | :37:26. | :37:32.
hopefully. We wish you the best. Fantastic story. Let's speak to | :37:33. | :37:36.
Jeanette Allen. You work with the Horse Trust, which is a charity that | :37:37. | :37:41.
helps work after retired police horses and others. What sort of | :37:42. | :37:45.
retirement or they have? Is a charity, we specialise in retiring | :37:46. | :37:48.
horses that have served the public, so they generally come from the | :37:49. | :37:52.
police or the army. We are used to dealing with these big, usually | :37:53. | :37:56.
older horses. They get to run about in the fields, mooch about in herds | :37:57. | :38:02.
and just enjoy their twilight years. It is a big change. They have been | :38:03. | :38:07.
in these chaotic situations, and then they get to have a quiet life? | :38:08. | :38:12.
Yes, and for some of them it takes a few weeks to get used to that. They | :38:13. | :38:15.
are not used to living together in large groups, but it is help for | :38:16. | :38:19.
four horses from larger sections like Manchester or the Met that | :38:20. | :38:23.
often, when they come to our place, they are meeting up with old | :38:24. | :38:25.
colleagues, horses that retired ahead of them. It is like having | :38:26. | :38:29.
friends welcoming them when they arrive. A great job to have. I am | :38:30. | :38:37.
sure Harrison will be at home there. At the end of the show now, I get to | :38:38. | :38:41.
name the new recruit. Join us later for that. | :38:42. | :38:44.
Now, today we have been hearing about the devious attack pics | :38:45. | :38:48.
scammers use to get their hands on our money. Gerry Keighley, your | :38:49. | :38:53.
charity represents older people. How vulnerable do you think they can be? | :38:54. | :38:59.
As you have shown with Constance, the older people are very trusting. | :39:00. | :39:03.
A recent report from trading standards revealed that 85% of | :39:04. | :39:08.
doorstep crime affected people over the age of 65. 62% lived alone and | :39:09. | :39:15.
40% said they were lonely. Such a sad statistic. And it does not even | :39:16. | :39:21.
have to be the physical person on the doorstep to scam people. You | :39:22. | :39:25.
have brought in a load of male that two of your residents have had in a | :39:26. | :39:29.
short space of time, probably about a month. What sort of things could | :39:30. | :39:33.
these be that still scan their money? There is a variety of things. | :39:34. | :39:38.
Some of them are from legitimate marketing companies who would use | :39:39. | :39:41.
what we call misleading tactics. They put large sums of money in the | :39:42. | :39:47.
envelopes, with a small message saying, you can win this, not, you | :39:48. | :39:54.
have won it. Others advertise opportunities that do not exist and | :39:55. | :39:59.
so on. Something we were looking at said, you have won ?142,000. Then in | :40:00. | :40:05.
the tiny small print, it says, we would like to let you know that you | :40:06. | :40:11.
have won this. So it is not illegal, but it is very misleading. It is | :40:12. | :40:14.
very dodgy, and we would like to see action taken. We would like to see | :40:15. | :40:19.
telecommunications companies trying to block this sort of stuff from | :40:20. | :40:23.
getting into the postal system. And similarly, stop certain types of | :40:24. | :40:29.
phone calls getting through to older residents. We are campaigning for | :40:30. | :40:33.
war protection. We want telecommunications companies to do | :40:34. | :40:37.
more to protect older people from phone, internet and mail scams. And | :40:38. | :40:44.
we want to see no cold calling zones widened so that more older people | :40:45. | :40:50.
are protect it. -- protected. What can we do if we have a neighbour who | :40:51. | :40:55.
is old and vulnerable? Well, the report and mentioned said that | :40:56. | :41:00.
protective neighbouring is the best form of protecting older people | :41:01. | :41:04.
against scammers. We would like to suggest that the neighbours, friends | :41:05. | :41:10.
and families of older people check on them regularly. Look at the post | :41:11. | :41:14.
they are receiving, and talk to them about the phone calls they have had. | :41:15. | :41:22.
A quick update now. From yesterday's programme, we had a | :41:23. | :41:27.
number of leads on the hit and run web tragically, Craig Roger was | :41:28. | :41:31.
killed. Hopefully, that will lead to some information and closure for the | :41:32. | :41:35.
family. We also had some information on wanted face number one from | :41:36. | :41:40.
yesterday, Robert Knight, to do with a supply of drugs case. An | :41:41. | :41:46.
information is already coming in for 83-year-old Constance, who was | :41:47. | :41:49.
