for your call. This month we are out on the road with the police and we | :00:16. | :00:18.
need you to help them tackle criminals. Annette and Ian lost | :00:19. | :00:33.
their daughter Kay to cancer. Now fees have taken photographs of her. | :00:34. | :00:37.
We are under cover of an operation to cut white crime in Manchester. | :00:38. | :00:45.
You are watching Crimewatch Roadshow. Welcome. This is the | :00:46. | :01:06.
programme that takes you on the front line with the police and tells | :01:07. | :01:10.
you what you need to know about crooks. Coming up. The couple | :01:11. | :01:16.
attacked in their own home by thieves searching for gold. We feel | :01:17. | :01:24.
secure in the same house. I never thought it could happen in England. | :01:25. | :01:29.
It is called courier fraud, the elaborate scam based on one simple | :01:30. | :01:37.
trick. I am furious at being taken in and hope the police can get onto | :01:38. | :01:42.
it and get it stopped as soon as possible. It is our last day with | :01:43. | :01:47.
Greater Manchester Police and Sian is at the National Cycling Centre in | :01:48. | :01:54.
the city. Welcome to be very impressive BMX track at the home of | :01:55. | :01:59.
British competitive cycling. In the Velodrome next door, some of the | :02:00. | :02:04.
UK's elite cyclists are practising for the Commonwealth Games. As the | :02:05. | :02:09.
sport is hugely popular now, we are looking at bike theft and what | :02:10. | :02:15.
police are doing to tackle it. Burglaries are often deeply | :02:16. | :02:18.
distressing for victims, but for a family from Rochdale, a break-in has | :02:19. | :02:29.
been especially traumatic. We went upstairs. It was terrible. | :02:30. | :02:36.
Everything had been opened up and tipped out. Everything is just | :02:37. | :02:47.
memories, that have been taken. These days Stansfield and her | :02:48. | :02:52.
husband Ian have few photographs of their daughter Sharon, who became | :02:53. | :03:00.
ill in January 2010. She had a lump on her neck and was sent to the | :03:01. | :03:04.
local hospital. They did a biopsy which came back clear. And then she | :03:05. | :03:10.
had a lump under her arm. Sharon was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's | :03:11. | :03:20.
lymphoma. She died in 2013. They did not think she would make the night. | :03:21. | :03:26.
We stayed with her from Tuesday to Mother's Day, when she passed away. | :03:27. | :03:35.
She was bubbly and a good friend to people. As well as my daughter, she | :03:36. | :03:41.
was my best friend. A year later, the couple decided a driving holiday | :03:42. | :03:44.
to Spain was a break they badly needed. You cannot forget, but we | :03:45. | :03:54.
were trying to make a new start. The holiday was interrupted by a phone | :03:55. | :03:58.
call from a neighbour, their home had been burgled and the couple were | :03:59. | :04:02.
faced with a three-day drive to get home to Rochdale. We went upstairs. | :04:03. | :04:10.
It was terrible. Everything had been opened up, tipped out. We found a | :04:11. | :04:22.
night in the bedroom. -- knife. Was it to frighten someone off, or, if | :04:23. | :04:27.
we had been in bed, with they have used it? Now, when it goes dark, I | :04:28. | :04:35.
am terrible. The couple discovered that many items stolen had belonged | :04:36. | :04:45.
to their daughter. There were her things, which we had literally | :04:46. | :04:49.
brought back, jewellery she had tonnes of, a lot of it worth | :04:50. | :04:57.
nothing, but, to ask, it was worth a lot. She had bought me a Radley | :04:58. | :05:01.
handbag when she was ill. She drove to get me something nice for | :05:02. | :05:07.
Christmas. That had gone. And a watch I bought when she first | :05:08. | :05:12.
started the treatment. It was a Morgan watch. That has gone. Two | :05:13. | :05:19.
laptops and cameras containing photographs of Sharon were taken by | :05:20. | :05:25.
the callous thieves. We have never been a family to bother about | :05:26. | :05:29.
material things. It is more about feelings. She would say, stop | :05:30. | :05:34.
bothering about that, you and dad think about yourselves and get on | :05:35. | :05:39.
with things. But we find it difficult. Police say the home was | :05:40. | :05:47.
one of a number targeted that night. All of the premises were vacant and | :05:48. | :05:50.
all of the occupants were on holiday, so I believe the premises | :05:51. | :05:56.
was targeted. It is never nice. A burglary is a personal crime. To | :05:57. | :06:01.
have somebody come into your house, trawling through your property and | :06:02. | :06:05.
stealing hoppity belonging to you is not nice. Everything is just | :06:06. | :06:13.
memories, that have been taken. They cannot steal your memories. But it | :06:14. | :06:25.
is nice to see things. It is very difficult for the couple to cope | :06:26. | :06:29.
with this and I am joined by Sergeant Graham Cook. We think there | :06:30. | :06:33.
are people out there who know who has done this? I think the offenders | :06:34. | :06:39.
will have spoken to friends and family and might have offered the | :06:40. | :06:45.
stolen items. I appeal to anyone to come forward. There are four items | :06:46. | :06:51.
of sentimental value. The first is a black Morgan watch with a black | :06:52. | :06:57.
metal clasps and stones around the centre of the strap. The second is a | :06:58. | :07:07.
dark blue Radley handbag. The third is a long gold necklace. The final | :07:08. | :07:13.
one is a black bracelet with two charms. One is in the shape of a dog | :07:14. | :07:20.
and the other in the shape of a diamond. Do you think someone saw | :07:21. | :07:27.
the thieves? We believe they were disturbed. When the officers | :07:28. | :07:31.
arrived, there was a vehicle with the television from the house in the | :07:32. | :07:35.
back of the car. We believe they were disturbed committing the | :07:36. | :07:39.
offence. This is distressing for the family. If you can help, please call | :07:40. | :07:41.
us. And now time for wanted faces. Let's start with 38-year-old | :07:42. | :07:46.
Edward Hill. Officers in Cleveland want to speak | :07:47. | :07:48.
to him in connection with a conspiracy to supply almost 80 kilos | :07:49. | :07:51.
of amphetamine He has connections to the Liverpool area and is described | :07:52. | :07:54.
as having a boxer's nose. He has a scar on his left wrist | :07:55. | :07:57.
and another on his eyebrow. Next is this man, | :07:58. | :08:01.
33-year-old Courtney Smith. He was jailed for seven years | :08:02. | :08:03.
for drug dealing He has failed to stick to | :08:04. | :08:05.
the conditions of that release He was sentenced to seven years | :08:06. | :08:10.
in prison in April this year for a sophisticated fraud which cost the | :08:11. | :08:27.
banking industry over ?2.5 million. He failed to turn up for | :08:28. | :08:30.
sentencing and is now on the run. He is also wanted | :08:31. | :08:33.
for another banking fraud for which he was sentenced to three | :08:34. | :08:36.
years in his absence in February. Parsons is described | :08:37. | :08:39.
as easily agitated and has connections in the Manchester, | :08:40. | :08:41.
West Midlands, Nottinghamshire, Last up is this man. He was released | :08:42. | :09:05.
early from prison on licence but failed to stick to the conditions | :09:06. | :09:10.
and is wanted back in prison. He has a tad too of a woodlouse and another | :09:11. | :09:15.
of blue dots on the left wrist. He has a two inch scar on the side of | :09:16. | :09:19.
his neck and has links to the Stoke-on-Trent area, Kidsgrove in | :09:20. | :09:23.
particular. If you recognise them, pick up the telephone. Telephone | :09:24. | :09:30.
calls are free from most landlines but some networks and operators will | :09:31. | :09:34.
charge for these. You can also send a text at the standard rate. And you | :09:35. | :09:45.
can send an e-mail. Still to come. Very unsportsmanlike. Who is this | :09:46. | :09:49.
thief stealing from changing rooms while the teams are on the pitch? | :09:50. | :09:57.
This indoor BMX track is one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. We | :09:58. | :10:03.
have impressive skills on display as well as toddlers starting out. All | :10:04. | :10:08.
of the abilities under one roof. Where you have bicycles, you have | :10:09. | :10:14.
people who want to steal them. We can find out more from Chief | :10:15. | :10:18.
Inspector Patrick McKelvey. How much is bike theft problem? Last year it | :10:19. | :10:25.
was a problem in Manchester city centre with a lot of bicycles being | :10:26. | :10:28.
stolen, quite expensive ones as well. Our expensive bikes a | :10:29. | :10:36.
particular target? To some, but most people are opportunists who will | :10:37. | :10:39.
take the bicycle with the cheapest lock. We have done some work in the | :10:40. | :10:47.
city and theft is down by 20%. Some people will be able to tell what is | :10:48. | :10:53.
expensive. All sorts of bikes get stolen. We have four. I will look at | :10:54. | :11:00.
them and see if I can see which is the most expensive. I do not have | :11:01. | :11:04.
any particular skill. This is a light looking bike. I imagine it is | :11:05. | :11:12.
a racing bike and could be expensive. This second one is shiny | :11:13. | :11:19.
and looks great. Next to that, we have a bright green bike, with quite | :11:20. | :11:22.
a few bits on it. have a bright green bike, with quite | :11:23. | :11:25.
a few bits I am sure it would be popular with many people. And that | :11:26. | :11:32.
one on the end, it is a gorgeous yellow bike, a children's bike. I am | :11:33. | :11:39.
guessing the red shiny by? That is not right. The first bike, the frame | :11:40. | :11:44.
itself is worth more than the three others put together. The first has | :11:45. | :11:49.
no brakes and gears and is specialised. It is worth up to | :11:50. | :11:56.
?2500. I did not know what I was talking about, but many being stolen | :11:57. | :12:00.
will stop you have become an expert in this. I am getting there! We have | :12:01. | :12:09.
a bicycle guide, to let officers know how to identify bicycles and | :12:10. | :12:15.
the value of them. Bicycles can go up to ?15,000. If officers see a | :12:16. | :12:20.
person known to be a criminal with not much income who is on a bicycle | :12:21. | :12:25.
worth ?3000, we need to speak to them. Later, come back to us, | :12:26. | :12:31.
because we have been out with the police as they tried to catch these | :12:32. | :12:36.
thieves red-handed. We can look at crooks caught on camera. This lot | :12:37. | :12:42.
have been getting up to some nasty stuff. January, 2014. The faces of | :12:43. | :12:49.
the men are concealed as they walk into a south London shop. Two of | :12:50. | :12:55.
them look around the store while the third stands and stares menacingly | :12:56. | :12:58.
at the shopkeeper. He tells them they cannot come into the shop with | :12:59. | :13:04.
faces covered, but they take no notice. Realising he will be | :13:05. | :13:08.
raided, the shopkeeper tries to defend himself by closing the gate | :13:09. | :13:12.
to the counter. The robber produces what appears to be half a snooker | :13:13. | :13:17.
cue and attacks him. The shopkeeper grabs a wooden pole and takes cover | :13:18. | :13:22.
as the three have items, including glass bottles from the Cabinet. The | :13:23. | :13:26.
shopkeeper fights back and clashes with one of them, before they flee | :13:27. | :13:32.
from the store. Help us to catch this vicious gang. | :13:33. | :13:38.
Trouble is brewing in the Wiltshire town of Warminster. Things turned | :13:39. | :13:43.
ugly when a man in a long-sleeved top and jeans hits and off duty | :13:44. | :13:48.
soldier. It really kicks off and the victim is punched twice more in the | :13:49. | :13:52.
face before he falls to the ground. Police say he suffered a fractured | :13:53. | :14:02.
jaw. Pick up the phone if you can help. This is nasty. It is early | :14:03. | :14:10.
morning in Cardiff, in February. A young man is followed by a violent | :14:11. | :14:15.
gang. The streets are almost deserted. As he turns the corner, he | :14:16. | :14:20.
sees two young men closing in. He turns to face them and is punched | :14:21. | :14:27.
several times, before a third attacker arrives. From close range, | :14:28. | :14:32.
he holds an object at the victim's face and then launches his own | :14:33. | :14:36.
attack. The Victor An is thrown on the ground by a fourth man and is | :14:37. | :14:40.
completely at the mercy of the gang. As he reels from the blows, a fourth | :14:41. | :14:48.
man delivers the vicious final punch. Incredibly, he manages to | :14:49. | :14:52.
walk away from the attack. We cannot let these cowards get away with it. | :14:53. | :14:59.
You know what you need to do. We are with the cyclists at the | :15:00. | :15:04.
National Cycling Centre and some pretty impressive skills on display. | :15:05. | :15:10.
Police have patrols operating in this area. There are very expensive | :15:11. | :15:14.
bicycles on show. Jacob is a cyclist. Six times British champion. | :15:15. | :15:25.
You lost a bike that was stolen? I had a prototype BMX bike. I was due | :15:26. | :15:31.
to give it back a couple of days later. I did a race at this venue | :15:32. | :15:35.
and unfortunately was followed home and had the bike stolen from | :15:36. | :15:36.
and unfortunately was followed home and had a lot shared. | :15:37. | :15:37.
and unfortunately was followed home and had a lot It was the only one in | :15:38. | :15:43.
the world. Totally gutted. Had to buy a new bike. And it cost me a lot | :15:44. | :15:51.
of money. So is it something you are now more aware of? Definitely. I | :15:52. | :15:56.
have put double the amount of locks. The shared even has an alarm on it | :15:57. | :16:03.
now. I am doing my best to make sure it does not happen again. We will be | :16:04. | :16:08.
out with the police as they set a trap for the thieves. | :16:09. | :16:13.
Caught on camera, a bike thief in action. He makes a quick getaway, | :16:14. | :16:18.
but does not realise he has stolen a decoy bike, and officers have been | :16:19. | :16:23.
lying in wait to catch thieves like him. Today, we are joining an | :16:24. | :16:28.
undercover operation to catch the criminals who think bikes are an | :16:29. | :16:32.
easy target. We will be putting a decoy bike out into the city centre. | :16:33. | :16:41.
It is a hotspot area, which we class as somewhere where we have had a few | :16:42. | :16:45.
bikes stolen in the last week. Manchester City centre has been a | :16:46. | :16:50.
prime location for bike theft, despite its extensive CCTV coverage. | :16:51. | :16:55.
But the sting operations help to reduce the problem. Last year, we | :16:56. | :17:01.
had 638 bikes stolen. But in the last few months, we have seen that | :17:02. | :17:08.
drastically reduced. So it is coming down. Rachel briefs her team on the | :17:09. | :17:13.
plan for today's operation. We will be at the junction of market street | :17:14. | :17:17.
and Pall mall. If I could then ask Scott and care of the goal up the | :17:18. | :17:21.
junction of Pall Mall. The undercover officers get into | :17:22. | :17:26.
position and a decoy bike, worth ?400,000, is locked on to the rack | :17:27. | :17:35.
-- worth ?4000 full up we are trying to be as covert as possible, so they | :17:36. | :17:44.
don't see us. The last thing we want to do is have them see us, because | :17:45. | :17:47.
they will walk away and we will not catch them. Now the officers just | :17:48. | :17:53.
have to wait. And for two hours, no one takes the bait. Then at the | :17:54. | :17:58.
bottom of the screen, two men can be seen showing an interest. One seems | :17:59. | :18:02.
to kick the tires, whilst the other takes a closer look. These labs that | :18:03. | :18:08.
have been hanging around the bike rack have just walked past, so we | :18:09. | :18:12.
are watching to see if they go back and approach the bike. It is a tense | :18:13. | :18:18.
time. It is just waiting now for them to come back. The duo hang | :18:19. | :18:26.
around for a time, but eventually decide to move on. So for Rachel and | :18:27. | :18:30.
her team, it is back to waiting and watching. 40 minutes go by, and it | :18:31. | :18:35.
looks like no one is going to take the bait. But just when the team are | :18:36. | :18:41.
due to give up, they spot a man loitering nearby. He steps up to the | :18:42. | :18:52.
bike. The team stand-by. The lock has been broken, and the team go in. | :18:53. | :19:06.
The officers spotted him hanging around the bike rack. Then he took | :19:07. | :19:14.
the chain off the bike. We are going to look and see whether he cut it | :19:15. | :19:18.
off all pulled it off. It is a result. He stole one of our bikes. | :19:19. | :19:23.
It could easily have been a member of the public's bike that he could | :19:24. | :19:27.
have taken, so it is good that he was arrested. Before he is loaded | :19:28. | :19:30.
into the police van for a trip to the station, the bike thief is | :19:31. | :19:35.
searched, and further evidence is found. We found two pairs of wires | :19:36. | :19:39.
on him. When we looked at the bike lock that was used to secure the | :19:40. | :19:44.
cycle, he cut it with the pliers. So he has been arrested for theft of a | :19:45. | :19:49.
cycle, but he will also be arrested for having these pliers on him. He | :19:50. | :19:55.
is going to the police station now, where he will be interviewed in | :19:56. | :19:59.
relation to what has happened and he will be shown the CCTV footage. Then | :20:00. | :20:03.
a decision will be made on whether he gets charged. The man later | :20:04. | :20:07.
pleaded guilty to the theft of the bike. He is due to be sentenced next | :20:08. | :20:11.
month. Well, one bike thief brought to | :20:12. | :20:17.
justice, but we saw in that film how easy it is to cut through some bike | :20:18. | :20:24.
locks. PCS US -- PCSOs Curtis Paris will demonstrate that for us now. | :20:25. | :20:29.
While he does that let's chat Ted Gordon, who runs the cycle shop at | :20:30. | :20:33.
the centre. It is amazing how quickly some people can get through | :20:34. | :20:37.
these locks? Yes, it does not take long to get through some of the | :20:38. | :20:41.
cheaper locks. They are not exciting things to buy, so people do not | :20:42. | :20:46.
spend much money on them, but it can be costly. What is your advice on | :20:47. | :20:50.
which locks to use? Speak to your insurance company and make sure you | :20:51. | :20:54.
get a policy that will cover you if it goes wrong. Don't be afraid to | :20:55. | :20:57.
spend a decent amount of money on a lock. Some of these will cost to | :20:58. | :21:01.
?200, but if the bike is worth a few thousand, it is worth it. Let's look | :21:02. | :21:08.
at the lock on that green bike. It looks very expensive. That is | :21:09. | :21:14.
something we have taken from the motorcycle world. Some bikes are in | :21:15. | :21:19.
the same cost bracket as motorbikes, so spending that amount | :21:20. | :21:22.
of money on a lock is not unreasonable. It is a hardened steel | :21:23. | :21:26.
chain with a padlock, which is based on a more familiar D-lock system. | :21:27. | :21:30.
They are incredibly strong and it would take serious power to remove | :21:31. | :21:36.
it. That Lott has now been removed by Curtis, and he got through it in | :21:37. | :21:40.
a matter of seconds, because we have in talking for a minute. What about | :21:41. | :21:46.
this one? This one is more common, the D-lock. It is a much more solid | :21:47. | :21:51.
system than the one we saw Curtis remove. Solid steel is always better | :21:52. | :21:55.
than a flexible cable. We recommend that, especially somewhere like | :21:56. | :22:00.
Manchester. Some tips for you at home. | :22:01. | :22:03.
The value of gold has rocketed over the last ten years, and criminals | :22:04. | :22:09.
have been quick to cash in. Some are even targeting Asian families, who | :22:10. | :22:12.
occasionally keep old at home, especially during religious | :22:13. | :22:15.
festivals or weddings. One family were subject to a violent attack. | :22:16. | :22:23.
Massoud Ahmed and his wife Nusram have lived in their home in Bamford, | :22:24. | :22:28.
near Rochdale, 411 years. This is one of the best years, the posh area | :22:29. | :22:36.
of Rochdale. If this is not safe, where can anyone be safe? | :22:37. | :22:42.
TRANSLATION: I used to feel confident leaving the door open | :22:43. | :22:46.
while I was in the kitchen. When I knew my kids were coming home, I | :22:47. | :22:49.
would open the door. Nothing like this has happened before. It was | :22:50. | :22:59.
around six o'clock. Me and the Mrs was sitting here in this room. TV | :23:00. | :23:06.
was on, lights were on. And I heard the bang. I knew something was going | :23:07. | :23:14.
to happen. Three masked men raced into their home, grabbing the | :23:15. | :23:21.
couple. I started facing them, having a fight with them. And my | :23:22. | :23:27.
wife was shouting as well, but there was nothing coming out from our | :23:28. | :23:32.
voice. It was like a nightmare. The intruders had smashed their way | :23:33. | :23:34.
through the patio doors, leaving glass everywhere. The glass was on | :23:35. | :23:41.
the floor and glass started going through my feet. I was still trying | :23:42. | :23:45.
to resist as much as I could. He strangled me round the neck, and | :23:46. | :23:51.
held me down near the sofa. And blood was coming out of my feet. The | :23:52. | :23:54.
gang seemed convinced that the couple owned valuable 24 carat | :23:55. | :24:01.
gold, often called Asian gold. They were shouting only for one thing. | :24:02. | :24:04.
Where is your gold, where is your cash? Tell me! My wife said, I don't | :24:05. | :24:13.
like gold. You can see my arms, I am not wearing any gold. They refused | :24:14. | :24:17.
to believe there was no gold. Two of the men forced Nusram upstairs. | :24:18. | :24:24.
Massoud was held downstairs, fearing the worst for his wife. That was | :24:25. | :24:28.
really the worst time of my life. She was upstairs and I was thinking, | :24:29. | :24:32.
oh, God, maybe they will do her something, you know. There might be | :24:33. | :24:40.
strangling her. I did not know what they were doing to her. But the | :24:41. | :24:44.
thieves only had one thing on their minds, searching for gold. As they | :24:45. | :24:50.
rifled through Nusram's costume jewellery, she managed to break | :24:51. | :24:52.
through and call for help. But within seconds, the men had grabbed | :24:53. | :24:56.
her again and dragged her back to the living room, where Masood was | :24:57. | :25:00.
putting up a fight. When I was giving him the cash from my pocket, | :25:01. | :25:06.
his grip was a bit loose around my neck, so I put him down. As soon as | :25:07. | :25:12.
I had given him a couple of punches, the guy from upstairs came and | :25:13. | :25:17.
started kicking. Desperate to protect Nusram, Masood told the gang | :25:18. | :25:22.
that the police were already on their way. I said, I have CCTV | :25:23. | :25:29.
cameras outside. And they are connected to the police. One of them | :25:30. | :25:39.
ran outside. He had a lot. -- Aluko. It was enough to scare the gang. Are | :25:40. | :25:50.
you OK? I have called the police. Hello, Mr Masood? | :25:51. | :26:06.
Police believe the robbery was carefully planned. They had targeted | :26:07. | :26:14.
that house, believing there was Asian gold inside. It is a | :26:15. | :26:20.
despicable crime, really nasty. They were subjected to unnecessary | :26:21. | :26:24.
violence in their own home. It left them terrified, distraught. We | :26:25. | :26:29.
suffered for eight minutes, but they were like eight years. I am very | :26:30. | :26:41.
upset. After that, we had sleepless nights, nightmares. Everything has | :26:42. | :26:46.
been happening. We feel very insecure in the same house. I never | :26:47. | :26:57.
thought it could happen in England. Detective Sergeant John Schofield is | :26:58. | :26:59.
with me. Do you have any idea who did this? Just before the incident, | :27:00. | :27:04.
three male voices were heard at the rear of the property, which is a bit | :27:05. | :27:08.
of a dirt track, not much there. So we are interested to speak to anyone | :27:09. | :27:15.
who may have seen these males. And in December, before the attack, | :27:16. | :27:18.
there was a man on the street, pretending to distribute leaflets. | :27:19. | :27:22.
So we would ask anyone who saw him to come forward. There is some CCTV. | :27:23. | :27:27.
Do you have descriptions of men? The three men were all described as | :27:28. | :27:31.
white males, all wearing generic black clothing and their faces were | :27:32. | :27:36.
covered. They were in their early twenties. One of them was quite | :27:37. | :27:41.
small and the other two had distinctive blue eyes. How can the | :27:42. | :27:44.
public help you with this? In these cases, it is common for people to | :27:45. | :27:49.
talk about it, whether it is about what they have done or the | :27:50. | :27:55.
aftermath. People can overhear that. This is the type of watch that was | :27:56. | :28:00.
stolen during the event. They might be wearing it or try to sell it. | :28:01. | :28:05.
Very upsetting for the family in this case. It has had an awful | :28:06. | :28:09.
impact on them to be attacked in their home the way they work, to the | :28:10. | :28:13.
extent where there is now a reward being offered of ?2000 if it leads | :28:14. | :28:17.
to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible. Quickly take | :28:18. | :28:23.
another look at that watch. If you have been offered anything like | :28:24. | :28:27.
that, get in touch. And there is a reward in this case. | :28:28. | :28:32.
We saw earlier how police are catching bike thieves, but now we | :28:33. | :28:35.
need your help to trace of different kind of sporting fifth. DI Warren | :28:36. | :28:42.
Atkinson is here now. The thief you are after has a unique way of | :28:43. | :28:44.
getting his way on other people's hoppity? When people are out playing | :28:45. | :28:49.
sport, whether it is football or rugby, he is busy stealing their | :28:50. | :28:55.
property from the changing rooms. Very cheeky. Where is he doing this? | :28:56. | :29:01.
Basically, he has committed offences at Preston grasshoppers and | :29:02. | :29:07.
Blackpool rugby club in March. And the university of central | :29:08. | :29:12.
Lancashire. Those were all rugby clubs, certainly not the sort of | :29:13. | :29:16.
people you would want to upset. And you have some good clues to go on? | :29:17. | :29:20.
You have got some CCTV we can see now. You can see the offender | :29:21. | :29:26.
walking into Preston grasshoppers at 9.40 in the morning. He is quite a | :29:27. | :29:30.
tall individual. Then you see him walking out again. Stinker backpack, | :29:31. | :29:36.
smart casual clothing. He does not seem bothered -- distinctive | :29:37. | :29:41.
backpack. That seems to be part of his MO? In this situation, he went | :29:42. | :29:48.
into the challenging -- changing rooms and was not challenged. He | :29:49. | :29:51.
purported to be a member of the home team on helping people onto the | :29:52. | :29:56.
pitch with physio equipment. He offered to look after the valuables | :29:57. | :30:00.
for the team, and took them away, never to return. And you don't think | :30:01. | :30:05.
it is localised to that area, he could have gone further afield? We | :30:06. | :30:09.
are aware of a spike in Birmingham in early December and have been made | :30:10. | :30:13.
aware of some offences in late April and early May in the Bristol and | :30:14. | :30:19.
Bath area. So he could be anywhere. You are asking B owners to be | :30:20. | :30:23.
vigilant? I am confident that he is using public transport, and he will | :30:24. | :30:27.
be cash rich, using the cash to put himself into B A loss of our | :30:28. | :30:34.
normal investigations suggest that. Travelling the country, paying cash. | :30:35. | :30:39.
Have a good look at him. Get in touch if you know where he is. If | :30:40. | :30:49.
you have information, get in touch. The number is on the screen. Now it | :30:50. | :30:55.
is time for the second batch of criminals captured by CCTV. We need | :30:56. | :31:01.
you to tell us who they are. There is one word to describe the next | :31:02. | :31:06.
crime, despicable. A woman walked into a high-street department store | :31:07. | :31:10.
in Burnley Lancashire. She approaches a 66-year-old woman in a | :31:11. | :31:14.
wheelchair, with her friend in the shoe section will stop while the | :31:15. | :31:19.
friends are distracted, she rummages through the Lady's handbag, hanging | :31:20. | :31:25.
from her wheelchair. She takes a purse containing ?50 and leaves. Do | :31:26. | :31:31.
you recognise this cowardly crook? Call us now if you do. | :31:32. | :31:37.
We are in Cannock town centre July last year. The motorbike pulls up on | :31:38. | :31:43.
the pavement and the rider leaves the engine running. He walks up an | :31:44. | :31:48.
alleyway to a greengrocer and knocks over an elderly woman as he rushes | :31:49. | :31:52.
behind the tills to snatch the staff wages. But they have been paid and | :31:53. | :31:57.
there is nothing to steal. An angry crowd chased him down the alleyway, | :31:58. | :32:02.
where police say he stabbed a man who tried to stop him will stop he | :32:03. | :32:11.
goes back to the mall -- back to the motorbike and tries to escape, but | :32:12. | :32:16.
the escape is almost foiled. Police say he was wearing a distinctive | :32:17. | :32:22.
laser Chameleon helmet and a jacket with the words "good ride". | :32:23. | :32:34.
These burglars are in luck. Finding the back door of a south London | :32:35. | :32:38.
pizza parlour open, they sneak inside. It does not take long to | :32:39. | :32:43.
find the office. Good fortune obviously follows them because when | :32:44. | :32:47.
they find a safe on the floor, bingo, it is unlocked. The man is | :32:48. | :32:54.
emptying the safe of cash and documents. His friend is in charge | :32:55. | :33:00.
of holding the bag. They steal ?345, tripping the security light as they | :33:01. | :33:06.
leave. But they are not bothered. They know luck is on their side. | :33:07. | :33:14.
Tell us who they are. We can take a look at a shocking | :33:15. | :33:22.
scam that swindled a 72-year-old pensioner out of ?107,000. What | :33:23. | :33:30.
happened, Richard? The victim was at home and approached by a cold caller | :33:31. | :33:35.
to do work on the driveway. He paid him and then he was contacted again, | :33:36. | :33:39.
offering a refund, but saying he would only get the refund if he paid | :33:40. | :33:45.
extra money. This went on for about 15 months. The amounts got bigger. | :33:46. | :33:50.
The victim believed all the reasons given why he needed to give more | :33:51. | :33:55.
money to get his money back. People will wonder how it went on for so | :33:56. | :34:02.
long. At the time, the victim wanted to believe what was happening and he | :34:03. | :34:05.
said the man was believable and seemed like a nice chat will stop he | :34:06. | :34:10.
wanted to believe he would get his money back -- seemed like a nice | :34:11. | :34:15.
man. We can talk about the description. He gave his name is | :34:16. | :34:23.
Howard. He is a white male. He is in his 30s. Medium build, speaking with | :34:24. | :34:29.
a Bristol, south-west accent, and always dress smartly. ?107,000 | :34:30. | :34:39.
swindled in this con. Now it is time for a quick appeal. | :34:40. | :34:44.
Today it is one for a person with the -- with an eye on the finer | :34:45. | :34:54.
things in life will stop an art gallery in Newark, Nottinghamshire. | :34:55. | :34:59.
A brick was used to enter Trent Galleries in Chain Lane. Saturday | :35:00. | :35:07.
the 15th of March. He made off with two bronze sculptures. They are by | :35:08. | :35:13.
Jennine Parker. One of them is called Affinity and the other is | :35:14. | :35:18.
called Prosperity. They have identity numbers engraved on the | :35:19. | :35:21.
back together with the signature of the artist. Prosperity was number | :35:22. | :35:31.
16. Affinity number 19. They are quite heavy to carry and Isleworth | :35:32. | :35:39.
together almost ?1800. Maybe somebody has offered them to you. If | :35:40. | :35:42.
you know where they are, please get in touch. | :35:43. | :35:47.
It is called courier fraud, a fast-growing scam that reaches into | :35:48. | :35:53.
your home and tricks you into handing over your bank card and the | :35:54. | :35:59.
vital PIN number. In Manchester, police are warning people about the | :36:00. | :36:02.
con, which affects people across the country. Your account has been | :36:03. | :36:10.
compromised. Your credit card has been stolen. It was an unfortunate | :36:11. | :36:22.
and unpleasant experience. For Ralph, it started with a call out of | :36:23. | :36:29.
the blue. The phone rang. I am calling from the fraud squad. He | :36:30. | :36:36.
said we have apprehended two people in the Westfield retail Park. We | :36:37. | :36:41.
have a man in custody, trying to clone your card. Worried that money | :36:42. | :36:47.
might have been taken from his bank account, Ralph tried to help the | :36:48. | :36:50.
officer by following his instructions. He said to make sure | :36:51. | :36:56.
you know who you are talking to, we will ring. Will you please ring 999 | :36:57. | :37:00.
and asked to come through to Limehouse police station. Ralph did | :37:01. | :37:06.
not know it, but he was about to become a victim of courier fraud. | :37:07. | :37:12.
The victims are normally elderly people, vulnerable people, who | :37:13. | :37:17.
believe whether they are telephoned by someone saying they are the | :37:18. | :37:25.
police, that they are the police. He was asked to ring the variety of | :37:26. | :37:28.
phone numbers including the bank, to cancel cards. He said, give me the | :37:29. | :37:34.
details and I will get them cancelled. The key is that when | :37:35. | :37:40.
people think they have hung up, the criminals stay on the line. The | :37:41. | :37:46.
victim picks up their own telephone and ring the number and be connected | :37:47. | :37:51.
automatically to the same person. There are ways of preventing this | :37:52. | :37:57.
happening to you. The line only remains open for a set length of | :37:58. | :38:00.
time so I would leave it ten minutes before you ring back. The final | :38:01. | :38:06.
stage involves getting hold of the victim's card by pretending it is | :38:07. | :38:12.
needed as evidence. We will send someone over to collect your card. A | :38:13. | :38:18.
courier was used to collect the card and deliver it to the criminals. | :38:19. | :38:23.
This is an area police are working on, stopping legitimate taxi firms | :38:24. | :38:27.
from being tricked into acting as careers for the criminals. We stress | :38:28. | :38:35.
to taxi drivers that if they are asked to collect a package from a | :38:36. | :38:40.
vulnerable person, to ask them about it. Make sure it is legitimate. The | :38:41. | :38:47.
message has reached some of Manchester's taxi firms. When | :38:48. | :38:50.
Muhammad received a call, he refused to take the booking and notified the | :38:51. | :38:56.
police. It was a busy day. I picked up the call and it was a gentleman | :38:57. | :39:01.
saying can you pick up a card from my grandfather's place and deliver | :39:02. | :39:08.
it to me, I have left my card there. That is when I thought, no, | :39:09. | :39:13.
something is wrong. The day after handing over his card, Ralph | :39:14. | :39:20.
discovered they had taken ?500. But the car and artists went further. | :39:21. | :39:25.
They asked him to give them his watch, which he had been given for | :39:26. | :39:30.
his 21st birthday, making up elaborate stories about being needed | :39:31. | :39:35.
for a court case. It was a very good watch. I am furious. Furious at | :39:36. | :39:44.
being taken in. I hope the police can get onto it and get this stopped | :39:45. | :39:51.
as soon as possible. A police officer, bank, building society, | :39:52. | :39:56.
will not ring and ask the credit card details over the telephone. | :39:57. | :40:03.
That just will not happen. If you think you have been a victim of | :40:04. | :40:07.
fraud, or you want more information, you can go to the Action Fraud | :40:08. | :40:12.
website. You can telephone them on... It is now time to talk about | :40:13. | :40:25.
cycling on the road with Graham. You put cameras on your helmet and on | :40:26. | :40:29.
the back of your bicycle, was that because you were not happy with what | :40:30. | :40:35.
was happening on the road? I had so many incidents, scary and dangerous, | :40:36. | :40:39.
and I wanted to gather evidence in case something serious happened, but | :40:40. | :40:43.
also to show what it is like the cyclists on the road. What incidents | :40:44. | :40:49.
did you see? We have people passing extremely close. I do 125 miles per | :40:50. | :41:00.
day. Tailgating, cutting you up, those sorts of things. Has there | :41:01. | :41:06.
been an improvement? I was invited to a bus company last year. I had a | :41:07. | :41:10.
chat with the people doing the training. Since then, there has been | :41:11. | :41:17.
a dramatic improvement in behaviour of bus drivers. We can talk to | :41:18. | :41:23.
someone who has done a lot of work on this. PCSO Gareth Walker. | :41:24. | :41:26.
Demonstrate the points you want to get across. We are trying to get | :41:27. | :41:38.
across the message to stay out of cycling lanes. To give cyclists | :41:39. | :41:46.
base. We are saying a metre to let vehicles pass. Do not tailgate, slow | :41:47. | :41:51.
down. Do not put the cyclist under pressure. In a sentence, it is not | :41:52. | :41:59.
just motorists. Cyclists commit offences such as failing to stop at | :42:00. | :42:04.
red lights and cycling on the footpath. We want road users to | :42:05. | :42:08.
respect each other and share the road responsibly. Handy advice. | :42:09. | :42:17.
An update. Today's wanted face number 11. Maxwell Parsons, wanted | :42:18. | :42:23.
for sophisticated fraud costing ?2.5 million. Police are following up | :42:24. | :42:27.
what they call a fantastic lead as a result of a call to the show. Good | :42:28. | :42:35.
information after yesterday's appeal about a scam involving ?120,000 in | :42:36. | :42:41.
Hampshire. And the men wanted after a scam involving money, lots of | :42:42. | :42:48.
leaves on that one. It looks like you have had a good time up there, | :42:49. | :42:53.
Sian. We have enjoyed ourselves. That is | :42:54. | :43:00.
it from the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. Tomorrow we go to | :43:01. | :43:04.
North and we will show you how to make your home burglar proof. | :43:05. | :43:09.
For more details on the show today, go to the website. Finally, we will | :43:10. | :43:14.
leave you with another look at the wanted faces. Somebody knows where | :43:15. | :43:20.
they are. If you do, get in touch. We will see you tomorrow. | :43:21. | :43:54.
