Can you help bring some bad guys to justice? | :00:00. | :00:08.
Eight years on, Halton's killers are still at large. | :00:09. | :00:16.
The worst phone call that any parent or anyone could actually receive. | :00:17. | :00:19.
We're out with police on the UK's biggest tram network. | :00:20. | :00:26.
Where they start giving it all this and checking all the pockets, | :00:27. | :00:28.
you know they're not gonna find a ticket | :00:29. | :00:30.
And I'll be finding out how a community torn apart by gang crime | :00:31. | :00:36.
Hello and welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. | :00:37. | :01:06.
We're taking to the streets to tackle the crime | :01:07. | :01:08.
A terrifying attack on a lone female student. | :01:09. | :01:15.
When I saw the knife, I thought, I'm going to die. | :01:16. | :01:18.
And do you recognise the callous gang cashing | :01:19. | :01:20.
I think it's terrible what they're doing. | :01:21. | :01:26.
I have sometimes cried, it's horrible. | :01:27. | :01:31.
Today we're in Salford in Greater Manchester. | :01:32. | :01:38.
Michelle, have we interrupted your breakfast? | :01:39. | :01:44.
But this is no ordinary cafe I'm eating at. | :01:45. | :01:46.
This has been funded by money the police have seized from gangs | :01:47. | :01:49.
This area has been blighted by gang crime but police are trying | :01:50. | :01:53.
We'll be meeting some of the people who've benefitted a little later on. | :01:54. | :01:57.
But first, when 20-year-old Halton McCollin was murdered | :01:58. | :02:01.
in Manchester eight years ago it shook the whole community. | :02:02. | :02:05.
His killers have never been found but his family and friends | :02:06. | :02:07.
Generosity, it was a massive factor. He had a smile that I wish I had, | :02:08. | :02:30.
just a smile that children's ward. He had a beautiful aura and energy. | :02:31. | :02:39.
He was very honest. And he was a positive influence in general. If | :02:40. | :02:44.
you years ahead of people, maturity wise, people looked up to him in | :02:45. | :02:52.
school. In January 2008, 20-year-old Halton McCollin was gunned down in a | :02:53. | :02:58.
takeaway restaurant in Manchester. Detectives believe he was the | :02:59. | :03:03.
innocent victim of a tragic case of mistaken identity. Halton grew up in | :03:04. | :03:08.
the Charlton area of the city. He was a talented footballer who had | :03:09. | :03:13.
recently got a job, a new flat and a car. He loved football, watching and | :03:14. | :03:20.
playing even more so. He was a person everybody would pick first, | :03:21. | :03:25.
people wanted to be on his team because of the passion he brought | :03:26. | :03:28.
into football. And the passion he brought into life. On the evening of | :03:29. | :03:37.
the 19th of January 2008, Halton and friends were heading to a house | :03:38. | :03:41.
party. On the way they decided to get some food from a local takeaway. | :03:42. | :03:49.
On Chester Road, I'd the takeaway, each of them wanted food so they | :03:50. | :03:56.
went in and began to order. -- outside the takeaway. | :03:57. | :04:13.
One of the friends received a phone call from a friend of his who was | :04:14. | :04:20.
sat in a carcass by in the car park of the pub. She thought she had seen | :04:21. | :04:24.
a man getting out of the car with the Gaelic -- balaclava and she | :04:25. | :04:32.
thought he had a gun so she walked -- award the friends that there was | :04:33. | :04:36.
a serious situation about to develop and one of the friends of Halton | :04:37. | :04:41.
went outside and could see two masked men approaching with what | :04:42. | :04:45.
looked like deadly intent. They were very afraid. The group panicked and | :04:46. | :04:51.
jumped over the counter and in attempt to hide from the gunmen. | :04:52. | :04:56.
Seconds later, two masked men burst in, they fired three rounds, the | :04:57. | :05:02.
fourth fleeing the scene. The devastating reality became clear. | :05:03. | :05:09.
Not all of the friends had made it to safety. The worst phone call | :05:10. | :05:17.
anybody could receive. They basically said, the, you need to get | :05:18. | :05:24.
into Manchester, Halton has been shot. Halton had been hit in the | :05:25. | :05:34.
back of the head. There was close to triple figures of people at the | :05:35. | :05:38.
hospital, including family and friends. He looked at peace, like he | :05:39. | :05:44.
was sleeping. I just got his hand and said, I will see you again, | :05:45. | :05:50.
hopefully one day, friend. Thank you for all of the memories. Thank you | :05:51. | :05:58.
for being my friend. Thank you for being my friend. Halton was in a | :05:59. | :06:06.
coma for three days before the family had to make the heartbreaking | :06:07. | :06:10.
decision to turn off his life-support machine. It was | :06:11. | :06:18.
actually that that was keeping him. He donated his organs and he was | :06:19. | :06:27.
about giving, always has been. Halton was in no way involved with | :06:28. | :06:31.
any gang, he had no criminal convictions at all. This really was | :06:32. | :06:38.
a completely mistaken identity case. It has been eight years since the | :06:39. | :06:42.
death of Halton but we will not give up on this. His mum and dad | :06:43. | :06:47.
particularly want to see justice and we want to see that also. This case | :06:48. | :06:52.
will never be closed until his killers are brought to justice. What | :06:53. | :07:00.
happened needs to be remembered, an innocent person, who was so loved | :07:01. | :07:05.
and cared for by so many people, was taken away. I have pictures and Time | :07:06. | :07:15.
stands still. You can still see that 20-year-old. But I will never see | :07:16. | :07:21.
him hold. He will always have that beautiful smile. That loveliness | :07:22. | :07:29.
about him. The sad thing is, I buried my son. This case is tragic. | :07:30. | :07:40.
I am joined by Martin Bottomley - who is Greater Manchester Police's | :07:41. | :07:43.
Halton was a hardworking young man with a bright future ahead of him. | :07:44. | :07:51.
You truly believe this is a case of mistaken identity? | :07:52. | :07:54.
Halton worked hard, he had a job and his own car and apartment, and great | :07:55. | :08:03.
man looking forward to his life. Remind us of what | :08:04. | :08:05.
happened that night? Halton and his friends were going to | :08:06. | :08:14.
a party and they stopped off at the China Gardens takeaway on Chester | :08:15. | :08:15.
Road. Two men wearing balaclavas | :08:16. | :08:18.
approached the takeaway from the side road next | :08:19. | :08:20.
to the Gorse Hill Pub .They entered the takeaway, | :08:21. | :08:22.
fired three shots before leaving. One of these shots sadly | :08:23. | :08:25.
hit Halton in the head What do we know about | :08:26. | :08:27.
the people responsible? One man was armed and was | :08:28. | :08:35.
dressed all in black. He was approximately 5 foot 11 | :08:36. | :08:38.
tall, of medium build. He was accompanied by another male | :08:39. | :08:42.
with a balaclava, wearing a dark The hood was over the coat, | :08:43. | :08:49.
with faded jeans and he was skinny. Somebody must know them, you might | :08:50. | :08:59.
have been frightened at the time but please come forward. There is a | :09:00. | :09:05.
reward? Yes, Greater Manchester Police | :09:06. | :09:09.
are offering ?50,000 for information If you have any answers, please get | :09:10. | :09:11.
in touch. Details are on the screen. Next, today's round-up | :09:12. | :09:21.
of crimes caught on CCTV. Watch carefully and let us know | :09:22. | :09:24.
if you recognise anyone. It's the early hours | :09:25. | :09:28.
of a Tuesday morning. February of this year. Three men | :09:29. | :09:38.
hanging around outside a supermarket in Surrey. The men start to move | :09:39. | :09:44.
pallets and objects in front of the shop window. The trio move out of | :09:45. | :09:49.
the way to make room for them gold Volvo. The car on fake numberplates | :09:50. | :09:57.
gets into position then suddenly smashes through the window. Three of | :09:58. | :10:03.
the masked men rush in and head for the counter. They know exactly what | :10:04. | :10:09.
they want. They start chucking baskets and bending the shelters. | :10:10. | :10:12.
They are here for the cigarettes. Once they have a bag full they go | :10:13. | :10:16.
back to the car and leave towards bank shot and the M3. They still | :10:17. | :10:23.
around three grams worth of smokes. Who are these nicotine stealing men? | :10:24. | :10:34.
Collars. This CCTV captures a visitor to a house in Oxford but | :10:35. | :10:39.
nobody is in and he has not invited. He still wants to get inside. | :10:40. | :10:43.
Picking up rock and smashing through the window. He reaches inside but | :10:44. | :10:48.
still cannot get in. He tries the door. That is not working. He leaves | :10:49. | :10:55.
and goes around the other side of the house. Later, the homeowners | :10:56. | :11:00.
return to find the house broken into and sentimental jewellery taken. But | :11:01. | :11:06.
is this unwanted house guest? -- who is. Castor mind back to the 30th of | :11:07. | :11:17.
October last year. It Halton in Ilford is about to get a couple of | :11:18. | :11:21.
unwelcome visitors. They are not coming in through the door, they are | :11:22. | :11:25.
dropping in through the roof. The pairs start exploring. What are they | :11:26. | :11:31.
up to? They are joined around one hour later by another intruder. The | :11:32. | :11:36.
next time they are spotted on camera, they are running away with a | :11:37. | :11:43.
handful of goodies. It was found that about ?20,000 worth of | :11:44. | :11:45.
donations and ceremonial items were missing. | :11:46. | :11:47.
Do you know who this trio of temple roof raiders are? | :11:48. | :11:50.

I'm here in Salford, where there're lots of great things | :12:05. | :12:15.
But it is an area that's had its fair share of | :12:16. | :12:19.
Salford in Greater Manchester. An area of pride industrial heritage | :12:20. | :12:32.
and recent generation. It has also been hitting the headlines for the | :12:33. | :12:36.
wrong reasons. Like some other inner-city areas, Salford has had | :12:37. | :12:41.
problems with gun crime and gang crime. There has been a string of | :12:42. | :12:50.
serious incidents. Last July, Paul, once dubbed Mr big, was gunned down | :12:51. | :12:54.
and killed. And seven-year-old Christine Hickey and his mum were | :12:55. | :13:00.
shot in the legs outside their home. Police say they are cracking down, | :13:01. | :13:06.
seizing weapons and disrupting organised crime. Last year in | :13:07. | :13:13.
Salford, more than ?600,000 worth of drugs were seized, along with half | :13:14. | :13:20.
?1 million worth of cash. -- ?500,000. | :13:21. | :13:22.
Here with me now is Superintendent Mark Kenny. | :13:23. | :13:24.
It's been a tough time for Salford, hasn't it? | :13:25. | :13:26.
We have had a number of incidents involving firearms but we have been | :13:27. | :13:33.
doing everything we can to tackle that. But that is not | :13:34. | :13:37.
representative. That is a small number of people responsible for | :13:38. | :13:41.
Serie A 's crime. It does not represent the good things happening | :13:42. | :13:49.
here. It's not just about enforcement? We are working with our | :13:50. | :13:54.
partners to tackle the causes of crime and work with young people and | :13:55. | :13:57.
the community to get to the root of this and prevent it happening in the | :13:58. | :14:00.
longer term. Tell me more about the piggy bank scheme? We have been | :14:01. | :14:05.
taking money away from the drug dealers and those who cause harm, | :14:06. | :14:09.
taking that away through the proceeds of crime act and giving it | :14:10. | :14:13.
back to the community. We have taken ?38,000 from those criminals and we | :14:14. | :14:18.
have said to the community, in Ackles and Salford, where should we | :14:19. | :14:22.
spend this? The community have voted for these groups today and we have | :14:23. | :14:37.
given them money. Let's have a look. We have got Thai boxing going on. | :14:38. | :14:40.
It's something really positive for people to get involved with. They | :14:41. | :14:44.
can get equipment and they can travel around Europe and they have | :14:45. | :14:47.
won awards and on really well. What about the choir here? One of the | :14:48. | :14:54.
local schools, they have had money to use on equipment and microphones | :14:55. | :14:58.
and T-shirts and it has helped them travel around, and they've performed | :14:59. | :15:01.
in local hospitals and hospices. Good for the young people on the | :15:02. | :15:06.
community. Such a positive message. Finally, the bike club. Again, | :15:07. | :15:11.
really good, positive work with young people and this group have | :15:12. | :15:14.
worked on their bikes, and the money is being used to buy the equipment | :15:15. | :15:20.
and the bike stands and young people are being trained on how to build | :15:21. | :15:24.
bikes and refit them and positive activities. A real sense of | :15:25. | :15:30.
community spirit here. Make sure you join me later when I speak to more | :15:31. | :15:32.
people who have benefited from this. Here's what else is still | :15:33. | :15:34.
to come this morning. The nighttime attack on a student, | :15:35. | :15:38.
dragged into a park at knifepoint. His face looked really scary. I was | :15:39. | :15:46.
really afraid. And we spend the day with the travel | :15:47. | :15:51.
cops, keeping Manchester's tram But first, if you're a regular | :15:52. | :15:54.
viewer you'll know that distraction Elderly and vulnerable people | :15:55. | :16:02.
are often the targets, and this morning we're asking | :16:03. | :16:06.
for your help to track down a particularly heartless gang | :16:07. | :16:08.
which police believe is operating We'll hear from one | :16:09. | :16:11.
of their victims in a moment. But first, I'm joined by PC | :16:12. | :16:15.
Paul Rhys from Wiltshire Police. We have a team of three men -- three | :16:16. | :16:35.
women and one man, and they followed an old woman to a bank and saw her | :16:36. | :16:39.
put her number in the cash machine and followed her till they got the | :16:40. | :16:45.
opportunity to steal the cashpoint card and took ?1200. The victim in | :16:46. | :16:50.
this case was Doreen, and a real impact on her. As will see. It felt | :16:51. | :16:56.
horrible because sometimes I wake up in the morning and I feel very | :16:57. | :17:05.
nervous. I am reliving it. I do get nervous. | :17:06. | :17:10.
Not surprisingly, it's had a real impact on Doreen. | :17:11. | :17:12.
There is some clear CCTV of the women in this gang, isn't there? | :17:13. | :17:19.
We have the females either side of Doreen she uses the cash machine, | :17:20. | :17:25.
then walking away with the number. In the council offices in Swindon, | :17:26. | :17:30.
the female on the ground has dropped money around her feet. That is a | :17:31. | :17:35.
classic distraction. We see Doreen looking over and her bag unattended, | :17:36. | :17:39.
and this is part of the gang and she was going to use that as an | :17:40. | :17:43.
opportunity to steal the bag. They didn't get the contents of the bag | :17:44. | :17:46.
at that stage, it was just afterwards, but you did get an image | :17:47. | :17:49.
of the offender. We will see that now. This is one of the offenders | :17:50. | :17:54.
after they got the card and PIN number. She is just leaving the bank | :17:55. | :18:02.
in Regent Street in Swindon and she changed her appearance by wearing a | :18:03. | :18:07.
scarf. She has got the ?1200. That's unbelievable. This is a bus in | :18:08. | :18:19.
Derbyshire. The females are following the victim off the bus, | :18:20. | :18:24.
having watched the user card and subsequently they steal her | :18:25. | :18:29.
cashpoint card and get money again. A really good image of them here. We | :18:30. | :18:34.
have seen both of the images and you are confident that someone will know | :18:35. | :18:39.
who these people are. Absolutely. They are travelling around the | :18:40. | :18:42.
Midlands, London, the South West. Somebody lives next door to them | :18:43. | :18:46.
what they have been arrested and I'm sure we will get them. Please do | :18:47. | :18:51.
take a good look at those photos. Do you know who these people are? If | :18:52. | :18:53.
you do, please get in touch. Here in Greater Manchester | :18:54. | :18:57.
they have the biggest tram But unfortunately, it does suffer | :18:58. | :18:59.
from a fair amount of crime So we've been out with the police | :19:00. | :19:04.
teams doing their best to keep It is a Saturday afternoon, and | :19:05. | :19:22.
thousands of people are travelling around Manchester, enjoying their | :19:23. | :19:28.
weekend. The travel safe units are out in force helping to keep the | :19:29. | :19:34.
transport system a crime free zone. -- Travelsafe the unit. Today the | :19:35. | :19:40.
kit -- team are working on the Manchester Metro line, the largest | :19:41. | :19:44.
network in the UK. At Victoria Station, Stephen Delaney is | :19:45. | :19:50.
expecting a busy day. The plan for the day is to work alongside the | :19:51. | :19:54.
metro system as they check the tickets. Anyone that is obstructive | :19:55. | :19:59.
or refuses to give details, if they give false details, anything like | :20:00. | :20:02.
that, anyone who starts kicking off, we will get involved. Excuse me, | :20:03. | :20:08.
pal, comment and I see your ticket? I'm just looking. You can have a | :20:09. | :20:16.
chance to get him and get the ticket or you can have a standard fine. | :20:17. | :20:19.
There are people who are repeat offenders. All right, mate. | :20:20. | :20:28.
Straightaway they they do the shuffle, checking their pockets, and | :20:29. | :20:31.
they are not going to find a ticket because they have bought one. You | :20:32. | :20:34.
can spot them a mile. We have found is made. The -- we have found his | :20:35. | :20:43.
mate. The man and his friend were fined ?100 each. He was going to get | :20:44. | :20:50.
gay -- get away without travelling with a ticket. Some of those caught | :20:51. | :20:54.
are quick to admit they didn't buy a ticket. I just got fined ?100. I | :20:55. | :21:01.
can't see my girlfriend, so I will have to think of something. | :21:02. | :21:07.
Sometimes passengers without tickets refuse to co-operate with the staff | :21:08. | :21:15.
or do not have photo ID. That is when Stephen and his colleagues step | :21:16. | :21:18.
in and use a mobile fingerprint scanner. It is linked to the police | :21:19. | :21:24.
National computer and can verify somebody's identity if they are | :21:25. | :21:29.
already known to police. It's a really good bit of kit. It | :21:30. | :21:35.
identifies a lot of people who I wanted. And the fingerprint scanner | :21:36. | :21:39.
has helped solve far bigger crimes than fare dodging. Last August was | :21:40. | :21:43.
probably the best one and it sticks in my mind. At trap -- chap came up | :21:44. | :21:49.
with no ticket, and he was West Yorkshire's most wanted man at the | :21:50. | :21:53.
time and that was a good colour that day. The only reason we got him is | :21:54. | :21:56.
because he had bought a ticket -- a good collar. The metrolink covers | :21:57. | :22:03.
almost 60 miles of track and is used by 80,000 people per day. Ticket | :22:04. | :22:07.
evasion is the biggest problem for the Travelsafe unit. 10,000 fixed | :22:08. | :22:14.
penalties were issued last year but dealing with anti-social behaviour | :22:15. | :22:18.
also keeps the team busy. Take your bag off. Stephen has a word with | :22:19. | :22:23.
underage drinkers. How old are you? 15. You shouldn't be drinking. The | :22:24. | :22:29.
young girl is not charged but they confiscate a bottle. Anti-social | :22:30. | :22:33.
behaviour has been a big problem on the metrolink with youths causing | :22:34. | :22:38.
annoyance by shouting, drinking, smoking drugs. People find it | :22:39. | :22:42.
intimidating which is part of the reason we are coming round. All | :22:43. | :22:48.
right, lads. See you later. If you are vulnerable, old, even if you are | :22:49. | :22:52.
a young lad or girl and you go to a tram station and there are eight or | :22:53. | :22:56.
nine kids, the first thing you think is, are they going to do me over? It | :22:57. | :23:01.
does happen unfortunately from time to time. This is why we enjoy having | :23:02. | :23:05.
this presents, getting rid of the gangs and trying to make it safer | :23:06. | :23:12.
for everybody. Assaults and robbery on the trams in Manchester on the | :23:13. | :23:16.
rise. In response, Metrolink say they want to boost the number of | :23:17. | :23:20.
Travelsafe offices riding the rails. Would you like to wear it? There you | :23:21. | :23:27.
go. People get robbed on the tram. I have seen two fights, all kinds of | :23:28. | :23:32.
stuff. It's not good. It makes you feel so. I feel better, no one can | :23:33. | :23:39.
harass me, touch me or frighten me. So it's really good. Back at | :23:40. | :23:46.
Victoria Station, another fare dodger has caught Stephen's I, but | :23:47. | :23:49.
he senses he is hiding something else. Keep your hands up so I can | :23:50. | :23:55.
see them. Section 23, Michu some drugs act, I will search you because | :23:56. | :24:00.
you recovered cannabis -- the misuse of drugs act. Stephen's sense of | :24:01. | :24:07.
smell was spot on. Cannabis, ?10 worth, just a small bag for personal | :24:08. | :24:11.
use. If it all checks out, he will be issued with ACE treat warning. It | :24:12. | :24:19.
is a slap on the wrist -- a street warning. It has been the end of the | :24:20. | :24:24.
shift for Stephen and it has been a productive day. We had 86 people | :24:25. | :24:29.
issued with a standard fare and we have checked 2190 people and we have | :24:30. | :24:35.
conducted 13 checks in total, two cannabis warnings, one paid on the | :24:36. | :24:44.
spot. Not a bad day off work. Great work there. | :24:45. | :24:46.
Now it's time for a look at today's Wanted Faces. | :24:47. | :24:48.
Police forces around the country are asking for your | :24:49. | :24:50.
First up today is 55-year-old Jonathan Davies, although he also | :24:51. | :24:54.
Detectives in Manchester want to question him after bank | :24:55. | :24:59.
cards belonging to high-profile sportspeople were used to take more | :25:00. | :25:01.
Davies has links to Manchester, Cheshire and the West Midlands | :25:02. | :25:07.
Although he also uses the surname Nasirou. | :25:08. | :25:18.
He was jailed for two years and eight months in 2014 | :25:19. | :25:20.
for burglary and released early on licence. | :25:21. | :25:23.
But he has failed to stick to the conditions of his early | :25:24. | :25:26.
release and is now wanted back in prison. | :25:27. | :25:28.
He's 27 and originally from Togo in West Africa but now has links | :25:29. | :25:31.
He was due to appear in court charged with possession with intent | :25:32. | :25:42.
to supply Class A drugs, but didn't turn up. | :25:43. | :25:45.
King also calls himself James Holt and has links across Merseyside. | :25:46. | :25:49.
He was arrested in connection with a fight outside a nightclub | :25:50. | :25:57.
in Bedford town centre in which two men were injured. | :25:58. | :25:59.
He was released on police bail but has failed to return to | :26:00. | :26:02.
Originally from Poland, Mozer is 23 and speaks | :26:03. | :26:05.
If you know where any of these faces are, please call and text | :26:06. | :26:12.
Now, as we heard earlier, there's a project going on here | :26:13. | :26:19.
in Salford where the police have taken money they've seized | :26:20. | :26:25.
from organised crime and put it right back into the communities. | :26:26. | :26:28.
One of the projects benefitting from the money is Dad's Shed. | :26:29. | :26:30.
We have been here about a year, and as you can see, I have spent most of | :26:31. | :26:43.
the time putting the floor down, getting things ready and making it | :26:44. | :26:47.
into a workable workshop. The money has been a great help and I've got a | :26:48. | :26:51.
very good local company who are very generous with donating their waste | :26:52. | :26:56.
material. What do you do here and what type of people come? It is an | :26:57. | :27:00.
old-fashioned woodworking shop. No agenda. If you are at a loss, you | :27:01. | :27:07.
come along here and within four -- short space of time you will be | :27:08. | :27:09.
making something you never dreamt you could make. It starts with | :27:10. | :27:14.
something simple like a bird house. But people do get ambitious quickly | :27:15. | :27:19.
and it gives them a lot of self-confidence. Tell me more about | :27:20. | :27:22.
the area and have a project benefits it. It's a deprived area with a lot | :27:23. | :27:27.
of broken marriages, that sort of thing. We get people referred to us | :27:28. | :27:32.
by the health service and doctors who have what they call mental | :27:33. | :27:36.
health problems but basically it is confidence. Especially for guys | :27:37. | :27:39.
coming here, amongst their peer group, and we have the cafe open so | :27:40. | :27:44.
they can get a hot meal. They tend to open up a bit so that is nice. To | :27:45. | :27:49.
take something away that might be for child as often as they would | :27:50. | :27:55.
like that bring something special to it. Allen, thank you. Anthony, tell | :27:56. | :27:59.
me more about your experience and what you get out of it. I started | :28:00. | :28:07.
off with the Salford Dad 's well-being group, and from there I | :28:08. | :28:13.
got involved with Dad's Shed. Just learning how to do things. My late | :28:14. | :28:20.
father-in-law, his bench you can see there, Michelle, it was crumbling, | :28:21. | :28:27.
so to give something back to his daughter that reminds her of her | :28:28. | :28:31.
dad, I brought that here and I've been able to do that and work on it. | :28:32. | :28:35.
This has really given new confidence as well. It has. It has stopped me | :28:36. | :28:42.
from going back into crime because I have had a chequered past, and | :28:43. | :28:45.
something like this has helped to give me a focus. Anthony, that is | :28:46. | :28:49.
great to hear. Thank you very much. Next, the police here | :28:50. | :28:52.
need your help to track down a man who attacked a student | :28:53. | :28:55.
back in December. Manchester, a bustling city with | :28:56. | :29:04.
four universities and around 100,000 students. Jenny had just finished | :29:05. | :29:14.
her first term. What are you doing after this? I had lots of friends in | :29:15. | :29:17.
Manchester and I really enjoyed the course. When I finish that | :29:18. | :29:21.
university I would normally meet friends, go to the gym, that sort of | :29:22. | :29:29.
thing. I had a fun time. in great before Christmas last year, Jenny | :29:30. | :29:33.
spent the evening with her front. We were just channelling that, watching | :29:34. | :29:39.
TV, that sort of thing. I stayed for around four hours. At around | :29:40. | :29:45.
midnight, Jenny decided to head home. I like working so I wanted to | :29:46. | :30:04.
walk home. -- walking. I did not think Salford was a violent place. I | :30:05. | :30:08.
used to walk around by myself a lot. I am not a person who is afraid of | :30:09. | :30:16.
strangers and things. When I was near a park, a man suddenly said, | :30:17. | :30:26.
hey... Then he took out a knife. I went into my pocket and got my | :30:27. | :30:33.
wallet and gave him all of my coins. The man began to drag her towards | :30:34. | :30:37.
the park. I was wearing a coat at the time. He was grabbing the code | :30:38. | :30:42.
so I was trying to take it off to run away. I took it off and just | :30:43. | :30:47.
ran. But she fell and the man caught up with her. After that, his eyes | :30:48. | :30:52.
changed. They were crazy, creepy eyes. He had changed and had become | :30:53. | :30:58.
very violent. I said, please... And no. In desperation, Jenny tried to | :30:59. | :31:06.
phone her friend. I took my phone out of my pocket. I did get through | :31:07. | :31:11.
to my friend but the man saw that I was calling someone so he took my | :31:12. | :31:17.
phone off me. I think he tried to say, are you trying to call someone? | :31:18. | :31:21.
But he did not speaking is properly. He was kissing me on the cheek and | :31:22. | :31:26.
kept -- I kept avoiding it and pushing him away. After that, he hit | :31:27. | :31:32.
me in the face, on my cheek, and slapped me. It really hurt. I was | :31:33. | :31:37.
trying to get him to come down but his objective, his aim was to rape | :31:38. | :31:43.
me. He was trying to drag me into another park which had lots of | :31:44. | :31:47.
trees. It was fenced off so others could not get in but I held the | :31:48. | :31:53.
fence so that I would not go. As you tried to fight off attacker, a car | :31:54. | :31:56.
pulled up next to them. He suddenly run away. The man in the car came | :31:57. | :32:02.
out and asked what had happened. I said he was going to rape me. I was | :32:03. | :32:11.
crying. It made me not go out alone for the first ten days. Sometimes my | :32:12. | :32:18.
heart flutters and beats really fast when I go outside. In the | :32:19. | :32:22.
night-time, when I see men walking along, I am afraid. I find it creepy | :32:23. | :32:28.
that he is still out there because he could do this to other girls. If | :32:29. | :32:32.
the police caught him, I would be so happy. | :32:33. | :32:35.
With me now is DI Kenneth Blain from the Greater Manchester Police. | :32:36. | :32:40.
Kenneth, what do you know about the attacker? | :32:41. | :32:42.
We've been able to put together an e-fit of the attacker. | :32:43. | :32:48.
He's described as a white male, 5'7 tall, skinny build, 28 - | :32:49. | :32:55.
30 years old, black short hair with a black moustache and had | :32:56. | :32:59.
a distinctive earring and ear piercing in the top of right ear, | :33:00. | :33:03.
which we have an example of here. | :33:04. | :33:06.
The victim was walking home via Salford Central Station, | :33:07. | :33:15.
Across Bloom Street. The attacker grabbed her. He pointed the knife at | :33:16. | :33:25.
her and dragged her into a small park of Lamb Lane and subjected her | :33:26. | :33:28.
to a vicious assault, monster in the face, before sexually assaulting her | :33:29. | :33:33.
and that only stopped when a motorist intervened. It is shocking | :33:34. | :33:37.
and you have more details on the knife? It is ascribed as very small | :33:38. | :33:42.
with a retractable blade of the blade was not showing during the | :33:43. | :33:45.
attack. And the phone was stolen? That was a white iPhone 5. We are | :33:46. | :33:51.
keen to know if anybody has had that type of phone offered to them in the | :33:52. | :33:56.
local area in the last couple of months or if anybody has find that | :33:57. | :34:01.
type of phone. And we're keen to see if anybody can feed as this | :34:02. | :34:05.
attacker. This has shaken the attacker, she was really scared | :34:06. | :34:07.
during this and has been badly affected. Thank you very much. You | :34:08. | :34:12.
know what to do if you have information. Please get in touch. | :34:13. | :34:16.
Now if you saw a crime unfolding in front of your eyes, | :34:17. | :34:20.
Many people, understandably, might run in the opposite direction. | :34:21. | :34:23.
But others decide to take action and even apprehend | :34:24. | :34:25.
It's known as a Citizens Arrest, but what does that really mean, | :34:26. | :34:29.
Well, someone who's actually performed | :34:30. | :34:32.
a Citizen's Arrest is postman Simon McCluskey, from Hinderwell | :34:33. | :34:35.
in North Yorkshire, and I'm also joined by barrister | :34:36. | :34:37.
Last August I was driving past the post office in my van and I could | :34:38. | :34:54.
see two men running out in balaclavas and I thought that was a | :34:55. | :34:59.
bit odd and I saw the postmaster, not for that was a robbery so I | :35:00. | :35:04.
followed one of them with another member of the public and we caught | :35:05. | :35:08.
him and with the help of a farmer who jumped out with his combine | :35:09. | :35:12.
harvester, we managed to taken to the ground and told him. We detained | :35:13. | :35:17.
him for the police? These men were arrested and charged and convicted | :35:18. | :35:22.
and it was Joseph Crosby and Andrew Waldron and collectively, they got | :35:23. | :35:27.
17 years in prison, a fantastic result for the attempted robbery. | :35:28. | :35:33.
That was brilliant. What you did, you didn't expect it would be that | :35:34. | :35:39.
serious. Rupert, from the legal standpoint... You did get a reward? | :35:40. | :35:49.
That busy at the back! Yes, we got awarded a commendation by the high | :35:50. | :35:52.
Sheriff. It was a good day out! Fantastic. I want to ask about the | :35:53. | :35:58.
legal point of view, where do we stand? What can we do in | :35:59. | :36:04.
circumstances like this? It does not always end as successfully as in | :36:05. | :36:08.
this case which is why the police did not encourage people to commit a | :36:09. | :36:12.
citizen's arrest. You can break the law if you unlawfully detain | :36:13. | :36:16.
somebody but if you consider a serious crime is being committed, | :36:17. | :36:20.
someone is running from a post office wearing a balaclava, you | :36:21. | :36:26.
could likely think it was serious and can use proportionate force to | :36:27. | :36:30.
detain someone for as long as is practical for the police to arrive. | :36:31. | :36:35.
If you see somebody throwing away a cigarette, you cannot beat them over | :36:36. | :36:38.
the head and lock them up in your bedroom. You must be careful. It is | :36:39. | :36:44.
the proportional element? Don't overstep the mark! Having held this | :36:45. | :36:49.
gentleman to the ground in his balaclava, Simon was right not to | :36:50. | :36:53.
beat him up until the police arrived. You have to be careful. | :36:54. | :37:00.
These alleged criminals could turn around and lie about what you were | :37:01. | :37:03.
doing so you have to be very careful not to put yourself into any | :37:04. | :37:08.
position of harm. You are not a vigilante, you cannot dish out | :37:09. | :37:12.
punishment. That is up to the police. In the case of Simon, he | :37:13. | :37:20.
could detain the criminals until the police arrived. That is it, | :37:21. | :37:24.
containing the situation and not using excessive force and only | :37:25. | :37:28.
acting when safe to do so. Well done, Simon. Fascinating stuff. Back | :37:29. | :37:31.
to Michelle. Next, it started as a casual | :37:32. | :37:34.
night out for a group of young friends in Preston, | :37:35. | :37:37.
but it ended in senseless violence. It has affected me, it is terrible. | :37:38. | :37:50.
It is scary to not remember something so dramatic. 19-year-old | :37:51. | :38:01.
Sam Sheridan is on a gap year before starting university. One evening in | :38:02. | :38:06.
April, he was enjoying a night out with friends in Preston. My birthday | :38:07. | :38:13.
was coming up so I thought I would go out. We talked about our | :38:14. | :38:22.
different lives, catching up. The friends spent the evening at a | :38:23. | :38:26.
nightclub. Then they decided to come. -- walk on. Taking a short cut | :38:27. | :38:35.
through an alleyway, they passed two men. We were just walking past. The | :38:36. | :38:43.
men approached Sam and his friends. Without warning, one of them became | :38:44. | :38:54.
aggressive. One of them chased me. And just punched me. He punched me | :38:55. | :39:00.
once on one side and once on the other side. Then I was on the floor. | :39:01. | :39:07.
The brutal attack was captured on CCTV. Sam suffered a broken | :39:08. | :39:13.
cheekbone and serious injuries to his eye. For no reason, he has | :39:14. | :39:22.
ruined my birthday, injured knee, done all these things and for what? | :39:23. | :39:24.
I just want to know why. Lancashire Constabulary, | :39:25. | :39:29.
Sam seems like such a nice lad. You think this attack | :39:30. | :39:34.
was completely unprovoked? Yes, it appears so. Just a nasty | :39:35. | :39:45.
assault that did not appear to have any routes. Remind us of what | :39:46. | :39:53.
happened. The victim was out for his birthday and left the net ties -- | :39:54. | :40:00.
nightclub at 2:30am in the morning and went down the alleyway back | :40:01. | :40:06.
towards Church Street to get a taxi. They did not make the taxi. Whilst | :40:07. | :40:15.
working at the alleyway, two males encounter them and one of them | :40:16. | :40:18.
punched him twice on the head which caused fall unconscious and the | :40:19. | :40:22.
other males came back in the other direction. What else do we know? | :40:23. | :40:31.
We're looking for a white male, in his late teens/early twenties, | :40:32. | :40:34.
of chubby build and around 5ft 8in/ 5ft 9in tall. | :40:35. | :40:36.
He had dark brown wavy hair which was held back in a head band | :40:37. | :40:39.
He was clean-shaven and was wearing a long sleeved black shirt with dark | :40:40. | :40:44.
The second man is described as white, of slim build, | :40:45. | :40:47.
around 5ft 8in with short shaven hair. | :40:48. | :40:53.
He was wearing a T-shirt and jeans. Sam received bad injuries? Yes, a | :40:54. | :41:04.
fractured cheekbone, close to his eye, it required an operation and | :41:05. | :41:07.
was concerned that he might lose his sight but fortunately, that did not | :41:08. | :41:12.
happen on the does have a lack of sensation in his face. Thank you | :41:13. | :41:14.
very much. Back to you. Just time for an update | :41:15. | :41:17.
on what's come In on the phones and after was a | :41:18. | :41:28.
victim of a distraction burglary in Merseyside and officers are looking | :41:29. | :41:32.
at new leads as a result of your calls. And on Monday, we should you | :41:33. | :41:36.
the case of former pub landlady Carol Mitchell who was held at | :41:37. | :41:41.
gunpoint in her home and was promising information on that. Back | :41:42. | :41:46.
to Michelle in Salford. It looks like you're having a lovely time! | :41:47. | :41:49.
Yes Rav, there's very much a village fete | :41:50. | :41:51.
These are some more of the groups which have benefitted from the cash | :41:52. | :41:56.
pot which is really great to see. | :41:57. | :41:57.
How has it helped you? To buy equipment to allow the children to | :41:58. | :42:03.
complete the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, sleeping bags to complete | :42:04. | :42:08.
our own expeditions. Somebody from the Morris dancing group. It has | :42:09. | :42:13.
helped us get the outfits that we wear for the competitions and we | :42:14. | :42:18.
dance in Pontin 's against other dancing trips. And you all look | :42:19. | :42:25.
great. And Jeff? It will make a huge difference to the juniors of the | :42:26. | :42:29.
Thai boxing club to provide safety equipment and sparring equipment | :42:30. | :42:32.
that we need. Thank you all very much. That is it today. Tomorrow, we | :42:33. | :42:38.
