We're live, and we need your help to crack down on crime. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Caught on camera - the arsonists who set fire | :00:08. | :00:10.
to a pizza takeaway, while people slept above. | :00:11. | :00:15.
The shop can always be replaced, we can get more equipment, | :00:16. | :00:19.
but human lives will never be able to be replaced. | :00:20. | :00:23.
And the cruel crooks who broke into a primary school to steal | :00:24. | :00:26.
When we saw the thieves, on CCTV, it made me feel sick to the stomach, | :00:27. | :00:36.
it was so distressing to watch - 81 years of history | :00:37. | :00:39.
Plus, I'll be spending some time with this lovely lot, | :00:40. | :00:46.
the cutest new additions to a police dog unit. | :00:47. | :00:52.

Well - this is Olaf, and later I'll be finding out just what it's | :02:00. | :02:09.
I'm not surprised, good luck with that! | :02:10. | :02:14.
First today though - help us catch the arsonists | :02:15. | :02:16.
who were ready to put lives at risk not once, but twice! | :02:17. | :02:24.
On the banks of the River Severn, the city of Worcester is renowned | :02:25. | :02:31.
for its magnificent cathedral and historic buildings. It's also home | :02:32. | :02:39.
to a family run takeaway business called Caspian Pizza. We've been | :02:40. | :02:44.
trading in Worcester since the early 80s, as a family. It's a lovely | :02:45. | :02:50.
place to be is. We are well known within the community. We've seen | :02:51. | :02:55.
generations grow up from being toddlers attending, to pick up their | :02:56. | :03:01.
pizza with mum and dad, to being young adults. But in December last | :03:02. | :03:07.
year, the pizza shop became the target of some buried and wanted | :03:08. | :03:11.
attention. It was a normal Thursday night. We were very busy as we | :03:12. | :03:16.
always are in Worcester. The festive period was upon us, we were getting | :03:17. | :03:21.
ready, we were getting into the festive spirit, getting our orders | :03:22. | :03:24.
in and getting ready for the big rush. At the end of the night, the | :03:25. | :03:30.
staff closed up and went home. But, in the early hours of the morning, | :03:31. | :03:37.
two men approached the shop. One tried to force the door with a | :03:38. | :03:41.
crowbar. Before smashing his way through the glass. His accomplice | :03:42. | :03:46.
threw petrol across the floor and set it alight. Huge flames engulfed | :03:47. | :03:56.
the front of the store, almost setting fire to the men themselves. | :03:57. | :04:01.
They made their escape, leaving the shop ablaze. In the flat upstairs, | :04:02. | :04:08.
two sleeping tenants were unaware of the danger they were in. | :04:09. | :04:13.
Fortunately, passers-by raised the alarm and the fire was put out. The | :04:14. | :04:18.
incident could have been very, very serious. There were lives at risk, | :04:19. | :04:23.
there were people living there. Potentially the fire could have | :04:24. | :04:27.
escalated to the building upstairs and potentially, God forbid, the | :04:28. | :04:30.
people upstairs would have been in some bother. The shop could always | :04:31. | :04:35.
be replaced, we could always get more equipment, but human lives we | :04:36. | :04:40.
could never replace. With no clear motive for the attack, the pizza | :04:41. | :04:45.
shop owners carried on trading, but stepped up security. Initially it | :04:46. | :04:52.
was, what do we do now? How do we safeguard ourselves? Lights were | :04:53. | :04:55.
left on and on the premises. We did whatever we could to try and make it | :04:56. | :05:04.
clear that somebody was on the premises. Unbelievably, the takeaway | :05:05. | :05:09.
boss targeted again three weeks later, shortly after Christmas. -- | :05:10. | :05:14.
the takeaway was targeted again. This black Audi Estate pulled up on | :05:15. | :05:21.
the opposite side of the street. Two men carrying a hammer and a canister | :05:22. | :05:26.
of petrol got out. But this time, the owners were prepared. One of the | :05:27. | :05:31.
managers was on guard duty in the empty shop next door. When the | :05:32. | :05:35.
second attack happened, they tried to smash their way through the | :05:36. | :05:38.
window of the door. They didn't manage to do that so they kicked the | :05:39. | :05:45.
panel through. At the sound of smashing glass, the manager woke up | :05:46. | :05:50.
and ran into the pizza shop. The men were pouring petrol over the | :05:51. | :05:55.
counter. But before they could set it alight, they were driven out of | :05:56. | :05:59.
the shop with a snooker cue. They made their getaway in the black | :06:00. | :06:11.
Audi. It was a complete mixture of emotions. There was the relief | :06:12. | :06:15.
there, the fact the shop was safe to an extent. There was also anger, | :06:16. | :06:21.
there was discussed at the people that were trying to do something | :06:22. | :06:27.
like this. Local detectives are urging anyone with information to | :06:28. | :06:32.
come forward. We have no idea what the motive for these attacks were | :06:33. | :06:35.
but they were clearly targeted attacks. This could be a lot more | :06:36. | :06:38.
serious than it was. There were people asleep on the premises above | :06:39. | :06:43.
the pizza place, this could easily lead be a murder enquiry. It's only | :06:44. | :06:48.
by good fortune that we are dealing with arson. The two attacks have had | :06:49. | :06:58.
a serious impact on Wassim. It had the effect of looking over my | :06:59. | :07:02.
shoulder and expecting anything. Anything could happen. | :07:03. | :07:05.
Detective Constable Dave Foley is with me now. | :07:06. | :07:10.
Talk us through the first attack. The first attack happened on the 9th | :07:11. | :07:19.
of December around 4:30am. Two young men aged late teens, early 20s broke | :07:20. | :07:25.
down the door, smashed through the glass of Caspian Pizza. They spread | :07:26. | :07:29.
petrol over the floor and then set fire to it and ran off up London | :07:30. | :07:35.
Road. We believe they got into a black Audi Estate which drove off in | :07:36. | :07:39.
the direction of the M5. CCTV shows this could have been really serious. | :07:40. | :07:44.
Yes, there were people asleep upstairs. They probably didn't | :07:45. | :07:47.
realise that at the time of the attack but this could so easily have | :07:48. | :07:52.
been a murder investigation. Talk us through the second attack. The CCTV | :07:53. | :08:01.
is really clear. The CCTV is a lot better and that happened at 2:30am | :08:02. | :08:04.
on the 28th of December. We believe it's the same suspects. We can't be | :08:05. | :08:09.
100% certain but we believe it's the same suspects. They arrived in a | :08:10. | :08:14.
black Audi Estate, they did a U-turn and parked opposite Caspian Pizza. | :08:15. | :08:19.
Two young men, we believe young Asian males, they smashed the glass | :08:20. | :08:23.
in the front door and spread petrol all over the counter from a green | :08:24. | :08:28.
petrol can. They were about to set it on fire but because of the first | :08:29. | :08:32.
arson attack, one of the owners was asleep next door and he came through | :08:33. | :08:37.
and confronted them. There was a bit of a scuffle, no one was injured and | :08:38. | :08:40.
they ran off without setting it on fire. Have they done so they could | :08:41. | :08:44.
easily have involved themselves in flames. You believe it is quite | :08:45. | :08:50.
likely the same people were involved in both attacks, particularly since | :08:51. | :08:53.
the same car seems to have been used both times? That's correct. The | :08:54. | :08:58.
description of the people on the second attack, one guy is a larger | :08:59. | :09:04.
lad, wearing dark clothing and a balaclava. The other lads wearing a | :09:05. | :09:09.
teal jacket, Adidas shoes and distinctive black and white trainers | :09:10. | :09:11.
with a large white soul. If you know who they are, | :09:12. | :09:14.
we really need to hear from you. Now more incidents caught on camera | :09:15. | :09:19.
in today's CCTV round-up. And just so you know - | :09:20. | :09:23.
the first one is pretty nasty. It looks sunny outside but this guy | :09:24. | :09:34.
is all wrapped up. I wonder why? Threatening the shopkeeper with a | :09:35. | :09:38.
knife, he forces his way behind the counter. He helps himself to cash, | :09:39. | :09:45.
and then turns his attention to the cigarette cabinet. Happy with his | :09:46. | :09:53.
loot, he tries to make his getaway, but the shopkeeper has other ideas. | :09:54. | :09:58.
Attempting to grab the knife, they get locked in a struggle. The masked | :09:59. | :10:03.
man tries to break free by flinging her around. Fortunately the | :10:04. | :10:09.
shopkeeper wasn't hurt, but the crook still got away with around | :10:10. | :10:16.
?120 in cash. Police need your help to catch this masked man. The day | :10:17. | :10:28.
has just begun at this post office in south London. Keep your eyes on | :10:29. | :10:32.
this man in the blue cap. It doesn't look like he's up to much, just | :10:33. | :10:38.
waiting around. But actually, he's biding his time. When he gets a | :10:39. | :10:46.
chance, he sneaks behind the unmanned counter and stealthily | :10:47. | :10:51.
removes a coin tray. He's pretty nonchalant about it and stands in | :10:52. | :10:55.
the entrance having a look around before deciding he better go. What | :10:56. | :11:00.
he is not expecting is one of the female members of staff trying to | :11:01. | :11:05.
stop him from leaving. Down goes the tray with its contents pouring onto | :11:06. | :11:10.
the pavement. He is still keen on his loot and resorts to picking up | :11:11. | :11:14.
the coins off the floor. Police estimate he got away with a mere | :11:15. | :11:19.
?10. If you recognise him, give us his name. | :11:20. | :11:23.
If you know the names of anyone you've just seen, | :11:24. | :11:25.
Text CW, space and then your message. | :11:26. | :11:34.
Texts will be charged at your standard message rate. | :11:35. | :11:37.
Now, this unit spends a lot of time teaching dogs to search for things - | :11:38. | :11:49.
Pete here has volunteered to run and hide, while throwing away some | :11:50. | :11:57.
We'll give her a few minutes head-start, as we take a look now | :11:58. | :12:03.
at some of the many ways they train the dogs here. | :12:04. | :12:13.
The West Midlands Police dog training Centre is one of the | :12:14. | :12:18.
largest and most successful units in the UK. It has 35 breeding dogs | :12:19. | :12:24.
which produce up to 100 puppies each year. Around 80% of them will become | :12:25. | :12:33.
operational police dogs. The most promising springer spaniel pups are | :12:34. | :12:38.
selected for search dog training. We are looking at them from a very | :12:39. | :12:41.
early age. We want to see they've got the desire to go out and chase | :12:42. | :12:46.
their ball. Dogs that are very toy driven our helpful towards our | :12:47. | :12:49.
training. We will take them through the basics of how to find something, | :12:50. | :12:53.
how to indicate and then put the package together to get the search | :12:54. | :12:57.
dog at the end of the course. The dogs are put through an intensive | :12:58. | :13:00.
two-month training programme. Once the dogs are fully trained, we have | :13:01. | :13:07.
a range of dogs who can search for firearms, illegal substances, cash | :13:08. | :13:11.
and explosive substances. Paul King has been a dog handler for 14 years. | :13:12. | :13:18.
His new canine partner is cocker spaniel Dash. Quite daunting after | :13:19. | :13:24.
my first clue how I had 48 and a half years. I my dogs more than I | :13:25. | :13:29.
see my family. They live at home with us as well. To have that | :13:30. | :13:35.
working relationship with the dog is very, very strong. Today, Dash will | :13:36. | :13:41.
be tested on his sniffing skills. He'll be searching for traces of | :13:42. | :13:45.
drugs. For the purpose of the search I'm going to put a cloth | :13:46. | :13:49.
contaminated with an illegal substance. This is what we will use | :13:50. | :13:54.
for the indication training. Paul, if you take your dog to the wall I | :13:55. | :13:58.
want you to work the dog along the wall until we get an indication from | :13:59. | :14:01.
him. Dash, sit, wait. Picking up the scent, Dash picks up | :14:02. | :14:16.
the sample and claims his reward. A tennis ball and a patter from Paul. | :14:17. | :14:24.
Time for a tougher test. Now I'm going to hide in a live environment | :14:25. | :14:30.
and move on and hopefully develop the dog from indicating on the wall | :14:31. | :14:35.
from indicating in the open. Paul, I want you to search this small area, | :14:36. | :14:39.
we will move on from indicating against the wall to indicating on a | :14:40. | :14:43.
height that is hidden out there. The Hyder is a packet of drugs concealed | :14:44. | :14:53.
in the undergrowth. -- the hide is. Dash and Paul work the area | :14:54. | :14:56.
together, and fares's knows does not let him down. We have allowed the | :14:57. | :15:03.
dog to work a little bit more freely with tasking from the handler, to | :15:04. | :15:08.
locate the substance in a live environment and to indicate from it. | :15:09. | :15:14.
Is well a specialist search dogs, the centre breeds and trains | :15:15. | :15:18.
general-purpose police dogs. -- as well as a specialist search dogs. | :15:19. | :15:23.
German Shepherd Olaf recently completed his first day of training | :15:24. | :15:26.
and was paired up with handler Keith Bennett. It is exciting to take on a | :15:27. | :15:32.
new dog. I have just retired a dog who I worked with for eight years, | :15:33. | :15:38.
Olaf is 14 months old, I picked up ten weeks ago knowing very little | :15:39. | :15:41.
about him, him knowing very little about me, we have had to create the | :15:42. | :15:47.
bond. Today Olaf is taking another step in his training. He will be | :15:48. | :15:51.
tested on a realistic scenario which he could face in the line of duty. I | :15:52. | :15:57.
will put my colleague Dave in protective clothing and he will lay | :15:58. | :16:01.
what we call a truck, human scent from the body and the ground | :16:02. | :16:06.
disturbance, we want the dog to follow the track to its conclusion | :16:07. | :16:12.
to find Dave. Kitted up with protective padding, Dave heads off | :16:13. | :16:17.
to hide from Olaf. I would like you to follow that tracks to its | :16:18. | :16:21.
conclusion, once you find the help, the helper has been briefed to run. | :16:22. | :16:26.
If you can send the dog and detained the person when he has run off, | :16:27. | :16:31.
please. Quickly picking up the scent, Olaf is off. The dog is | :16:32. | :16:39.
trained to run and detain the person by biting them. Standstill! Wants | :16:40. | :16:44.
the handler joins them they get the dog found the person is arrested and | :16:45. | :16:51.
taken into custody. -- when the handler joins them. | :16:52. | :16:52.
Pretty scary stuff - and later I'll be finding out myself | :16:53. | :16:55.
exactly what it feels like to be bitten by a police dog! | :16:56. | :16:58.
Now, a few minutes ago we gave our volunteer Pete a head | :16:59. | :17:02.
He's discarded some evidence as he ran away. | :17:03. | :17:07.
And now Olaf and his handler Keith Bennett, | :17:08. | :17:09.
who you just saw in our film, are going to track her down. | :17:10. | :17:12.
Dave Raymond is from the dog unit, talk is through this. He is locating | :17:13. | :17:22.
it very quickly in such a small area, it is a bit fishable because | :17:23. | :17:27.
it is a large item. It shows you how quickly the dogs can pick up on a | :17:28. | :17:32.
scent. It is a large item, so it was visual. How long does the sound Snow | :17:33. | :17:38.
asked for? Depending on the individual, the weather conditions | :17:39. | :17:42.
and the item discarded, it varies. What type of object? Anything with | :17:43. | :17:52.
human scent, a knife, wallet, purse, mobile phone. He needs to find the | :17:53. | :17:56.
suspect. He will be hiding. Keith will give a challenge at the door | :17:57. | :18:00.
and send in the dock to locate him. When he gets in, the dog should | :18:01. | :18:07.
bark. If Pete decides to attack the handler or the dog, the dog will | :18:08. | :18:15.
detain the suspect. As you can see, the dog has located | :18:16. | :18:20.
in very quickly, he was barking. Pete has decided to attack the dog | :18:21. | :18:26.
and the dog is detaining him. He has come off immediately, the controller | :18:27. | :18:29.
superb from the dog, back to the bottom of the stairs and really can | :18:30. | :18:34.
with Keith. That was really quick, Keith was completely in control and | :18:35. | :18:41.
Olaf is completely calm again. I would not advise stroking a police | :18:42. | :18:46.
dog, sociability is crucial for us, he has done his job and he has | :18:47. | :18:51.
switched off. Later I will be meeting the newest puppies on the | :18:52. | :18:53.
block at the dog unit. Right, still to come | :18:54. | :18:54.
on today's programme. The historic lanterns which have | :18:55. | :18:58.
been on the door of Chancel primary school for 80 years - | :18:59. | :19:01.
until thieves nabbed them. We want them back so much, | :19:02. | :19:03.
because how would you feel if somebody came to your school, | :19:04. | :19:06.
jumped over the fence And the heartless gang | :19:07. | :19:08.
posing as workmen to steal I saw a white helmet, | :19:09. | :19:15.
I thought he was a workman, But first, in January this year, two | :19:16. | :19:24.
friends were pushing their motorbike over a footbridge in Runcorn | :19:25. | :19:34.
when they were subjected to a truly horrifying attack | :19:35. | :19:36.
which has left one of them, Stephen's mother Doris spoke to us | :19:37. | :19:39.
about the moment she received the call to say something | :19:40. | :19:48.
terrible had happened. Just to warn you, this is very | :19:49. | :19:59.
upsetting. It's about half past seven, quarter to eight when I got | :20:00. | :20:05.
the phone call saying they had been attacked, and Stephen had been | :20:06. | :20:12.
stabbed. It was so, so hard to see my son going out of my house that | :20:13. | :20:20.
night on his motorbike, and to come back and finds him, the same night, | :20:21. | :20:22.
in a hospital bed, near enough dead. Well, with me now is | :20:23. | :20:27.
Detective Sergeant Steve Lodge Clearly a terrible ordeal for the | :20:28. | :20:37.
family, what to be no? It took place at about 7:30pm on Monday the 23rd | :20:38. | :20:44.
of January 2017. The two friends were crossing the footbridge that | :20:45. | :20:49.
goes over the A533 from Beechwood to Hallwood Park in Runcorn. They stop | :20:50. | :20:54.
for a rest as they pushed Stephen's motorbike, the two attackers came | :20:55. | :20:58.
from behind with what are described as bats and bars to attack Stephen | :20:59. | :21:03.
and his friend. They were both attacked and seriously injured? Yes, | :21:04. | :21:07.
his friend has a broken wrist, Stephen was stabbed in the eye with | :21:08. | :21:12.
one of the weapons that they used which is called Saint uses -- caused | :21:13. | :21:18.
him to lose his right eye and has an injury similar to a stroke which has | :21:19. | :21:22.
left him severely injured. We can hear from Stephen about the | :21:23. | :21:24.
devastating impact. Just so vicious. What we know about | :21:25. | :21:50.
the attackers? They are both white males, both slim build. One is | :21:51. | :21:55.
described as being by foot seven, the other around five foot nine. | :21:56. | :22:01.
Both wearing dark-coloured North Face jackets with the hoods up and | :22:02. | :22:06.
McKay 110 trainers, one is described as having some kind of scab or | :22:07. | :22:14.
something around his lip -- Nike 110 trainers. You are appealing for the | :22:15. | :22:19.
bike? Somebody will know where this is, it is a black Honda CRV for 50 | :22:20. | :22:25.
off-road bike, known as a scrambler, with the blue seat. It has not been | :22:26. | :22:29.
recovered. Somebody will know about it, where it is, maybe had it | :22:30. | :22:34.
offered to them for sale, we are very interested in information. Any | :22:35. | :22:36.
information. If you have any information, | :22:37. | :22:37.
please do call us now. Or if you prefer you can speak | :22:38. | :22:42.
to Crimestoppers anonymously Next, a theft that might not | :22:43. | :22:44.
have seemed a big deal to the crooks who did it - | :22:45. | :22:53.
but has had a real impact on the children and staff | :22:54. | :22:56.
at one primary school. The former mining town of Rugeley in | :22:57. | :23:07.
Staffordshire has changed a lot over the years. But the community's | :23:08. | :23:11.
primary school has remained almost untouched since it was open. The | :23:12. | :23:17.
school was built in 1936 and the whole building has remained the same | :23:18. | :23:22.
for all of those 81 years. So it's got a lot of history and we are very | :23:23. | :23:26.
proud of that and we like to retain that. | :23:27. | :23:30.
The old building has always been very important to the parents, too. | :23:31. | :23:36.
This school is the centre of the community, all the parents, we are | :23:37. | :23:41.
all friends. We all socialise together and meet together. We are | :23:42. | :23:47.
very proud of our school. But in March, Chancel Primary School had | :23:48. | :23:50.
some of that precious history stolen. And absolutely normal school | :23:51. | :23:55.
day, at the end of the school day the building is locked, the gates | :23:56. | :24:05.
locked, the site is secured. Later in the evening of March the | :24:06. | :24:09.
7th, two men arrived at the school gates, but they were not looking to | :24:10. | :24:19.
do any late-night revision. First they tried their luck opening them. | :24:20. | :24:25.
They were locked, but that did not deter the intruders. One of the men | :24:26. | :24:28.
began to scale the 6-foot metal gates. What they didn't realise is | :24:29. | :24:38.
that they had been caught on CCTV. Once inside the school grounds, the | :24:39. | :24:46.
pair headed to the front door. They had their eyes on two art deco | :24:47. | :24:51.
lanterns fix there. Armed with a crowbar and drill, the men began | :24:52. | :24:57.
trying to pull the historic lanterns from the wall. After struggling for | :24:58. | :25:05.
20 minutes, the crooks finally ripped the lights three and made | :25:06. | :25:13.
their escape. You quite clearly see how carefully and delicately one of | :25:14. | :25:16.
the men places the lanterns onto the floor. That would lead me to believe | :25:17. | :25:20.
that the offenders are more than aware of the monetary value that | :25:21. | :25:24.
these lanterns hold. If they were to be put on sale, they would sell for | :25:25. | :25:29.
thousands of pounds because of the fact that they are antiques, they | :25:30. | :25:35.
are original lanterns. When we saw the seeds on CCTV, it's made me feel | :25:36. | :25:41.
sick to the stomach. -- when we saw the thieves on CCTV. It was so | :25:42. | :25:47.
distressing to watch. 81 years of history just gone like that. | :25:48. | :25:58.
The impact has been felt by children and parents alike. It's a very sad | :25:59. | :26:07.
thing is that we've lost our lanterns. It's invaded our | :26:08. | :26:14.
children's property, it's all the kids' property of every child that | :26:15. | :26:18.
has ever been here since they were put up. It's just a shame that some | :26:19. | :26:24.
petty thieves want to come and pinch some history. We want them back so | :26:25. | :26:30.
much because how would you feel if somebody came to your school, jumped | :26:31. | :26:34.
over the fence and got your lanterns? | :26:35. | :26:41.
They are just not made any more, they are irreplaceable. That | :26:42. | :26:42.
entrance will never be the same now. But you have good CCTV? The school | :26:43. | :27:01.
have captured some really good CCTV footage of the offenders, and from | :27:02. | :27:04.
that I can describe the males as both white, in their 20s, medium | :27:05. | :27:09.
build and wearing dark clothing and beanie hats. A piece of the school's | :27:10. | :27:13.
history has been stolen, clearly they knew what they were looking | :27:14. | :27:18.
for? Absolutely, they have gone to the location where the lanterns are | :27:19. | :27:22.
kept, they have had with them items to remove the lanterns, a hammer and | :27:23. | :27:29.
crowbar, wire cutters, you saw them very carefully removing the lanterns | :27:30. | :27:33.
and handing them over the fence. These were valuable, rare items, it | :27:34. | :27:39.
was not a random theft? Most certainly not. From the CCTV and how | :27:40. | :27:43.
they handled the lanterns it is clear they knew what they were | :27:44. | :27:46.
worth, which leads us to thinking they would have distributed them to | :27:47. | :27:51.
various different challenge will -- channels, via antique dealers or a | :27:52. | :27:55.
specific metal dealer, which would lead us to believe somebody knows | :27:56. | :28:00.
where they are. And you believe somebody knows whether lanterns are | :28:01. | :28:04.
and what happened? Absolutely, so if you recognise the lanterns or the | :28:05. | :28:10.
offenders, come forward. Thank you, Jamie. If you can reunite Chancel | :28:11. | :28:14.
primary with those lanterns or know who the thieves are, please get in | :28:15. | :28:17.
touch, the numbers are on screen. Now it's time for a look at today's | :28:18. | :28:19.

are make sure you get in touch Now to a sneaky gang that | :29:34. | :29:36.
pretend to be workmen so they could trick their way | :29:37. | :29:41.
into people's homes. Here's hoping you can help catch | :29:42. | :29:43.
them before they do it again. The suburb of Kitts Green in | :29:44. | :29:55.
Birmingham has been home to 77-year-old Maureen Griffiths for | :29:56. | :30:01.
half a century. But in December last year, Maureen, who has severe | :30:02. | :30:05.
arthritis, fell victim to a cynical scam. Her neighbours CCTV footage | :30:06. | :30:11.
captured a White builders van driving past. One of its occupants | :30:12. | :30:18.
then paid Maureen a visit. I was watching the TV, and I must have | :30:19. | :30:24.
fallen asleep. I heard the bell ringing. And then I could hear the | :30:25. | :30:33.
window knocking, I thought there must be somebody who knows me. So I | :30:34. | :30:39.
went to the door and I saw a white helmet. I thought he was a workman, | :30:40. | :30:45.
so I opened the door. I trust workmen. You do, don't you? The man | :30:46. | :30:52.
told Maureen he'd come to sort out flooding in her back garden. I said | :30:53. | :30:57.
we don't have any flooding. He said, I'm only doing what my gaffer told | :30:58. | :31:05.
me. So I said, OK. Persuaded by his claims, Maureen let the man in. But | :31:06. | :31:09.
further down the road, his accomplices were waiting to make | :31:10. | :31:15.
their move. Maureen locked her front door, but when the man made an | :31:16. | :31:19.
excuse to open it again, her suspicions were aroused. I said | :31:20. | :31:24.
where are you going now? He must have opened the door. He said I'm | :31:25. | :31:29.
letting the cat or the dog out. I said I haven't got a cat or a dog. | :31:30. | :31:34.
As the work man led Maureen into the back garden, she began to feel | :31:35. | :31:39.
increasingly uneasy. I just didn't like him. I thought there's | :31:40. | :31:43.
something not right about him. I couldn't put my finger on it. With | :31:44. | :31:50.
Maureen distracted, the man's accomplices let themselves into the | :31:51. | :31:56.
house and ransacked the front room. I could hear a noise and voices. I | :31:57. | :32:03.
thought, that's not next-door. The three intruders struck lucky and | :32:04. | :32:06.
made their escape with a large amount of cash. I rushed in and they | :32:07. | :32:11.
must have heard and they disappeared. I didn't know who was | :32:12. | :32:16.
in there, all I could see was everything was tipped on the floor. | :32:17. | :32:21.
I thought, oh my God. He came in. I said look at the mess! I said, I | :32:22. | :32:31.
don't leave a mess like that! In a few minutes the gang had stolen | :32:32. | :32:36.
?18,000 of her life savings. As the fake workmen walked away, Maureen | :32:37. | :32:42.
realised she'd been the victim of a cruel distraction burglary. We | :32:43. | :32:48.
received a phone call from mum's neighbour, said she'd been robbed by | :32:49. | :32:54.
four men. I felt sick. Literally sick and scared that she had been | :32:55. | :33:01.
hurt. They took mum's life savings. She's got grandchildren and | :33:02. | :33:04.
great-grandchildren and I'm sure she'd like to give them a little bit | :33:05. | :33:09.
of spending money for things. But now she's got nothing, it's all | :33:10. | :33:16.
gone. They took it all. This incident has obviously had a | :33:17. | :33:20.
long-term effect on our victim. She's been financially, emotionally | :33:21. | :33:25.
and mentally upset. It's really important for me that we catch the | :33:26. | :33:29.
offenders quickly to prevent other members of the public becoming | :33:30. | :33:34.
victims. At 3pm in the afternoon you don't expect anybody's going to rob | :33:35. | :33:38.
you. That's the last thing that enters my head. For Maureen it's | :33:39. | :33:44.
been a traumatic and life changing experience. Since this has happened, | :33:45. | :33:49.
she locks the door. Even when I arrived, she puts the lock on, the | :33:50. | :33:53.
chain on. She's always looking out the window at different cars. She | :33:54. | :33:59.
wants to know who the people are in the area, anyone walking past. She's | :34:00. | :34:10.
just so... Nervous. It's sad. I don't trust anybody any more. It | :34:11. | :34:22.
doesn't pay, does it? Detective Sergeant Phil Poole is with us. She | :34:23. | :34:30.
soft and back row lost her life savings. This has had a devastating | :34:31. | :34:36.
impact on Maureen. You call these men leaving her home on CCTV, what | :34:37. | :34:42.
descriptions do you have? We are looking for four white males from | :34:43. | :34:46.
the Irish Traveller community. The first male was wearing a hard hat | :34:47. | :34:51.
and high visibility jacket. The second is wearing a brown flat cap | :34:52. | :34:56.
and hunting jacket. He was walking with a pronounced limp. The third | :34:57. | :35:02.
man is 50-60, six feet tall with a distinctive hat on. The fourth mail | :35:03. | :35:06.
is described as being 40, five foot seven and also wearing a cream | :35:07. | :35:08.
bobble hat. They also had a distinctive van. We | :35:09. | :35:18.
are looking for anybody who recognises this for transit connect | :35:19. | :35:23.
van. It got distinctive roof bars and ladders and also has distinctive | :35:24. | :35:29.
black type windows. Anybody who can put that together is of interest are | :35:30. | :35:34.
asked. You don't think these men are local, do you? We think because they | :35:35. | :35:37.
are from the Irish Traveller community that they will have a | :35:38. | :35:42.
footprint all over the UK. Anybody who can put those descriptions | :35:43. | :35:45.
together, we'd like to hear from them. If you have any information on | :35:46. | :35:49.
who these men might be please do get in touch. It's worth remembering if | :35:50. | :35:55.
you're a victim of any crime you can call victim support. They are an 080 | :35:56. | :36:02.
1689 111. Now, animal rustling may sound | :36:03. | :36:07.
like a crime from the Wild West. But last year 76,000 sheep, | :36:08. | :36:10.
cattle and pigs were estimated Thankfully science is now helping | :36:11. | :36:12.
fightback against the thieves and just recently DNA was used | :36:13. | :36:17.
to secure the first conviction Temporary Inspector Matthew Howells | :36:18. | :36:19.
from Dyfed-Powys Police is here to tell us more - | :36:20. | :36:22.
with two very special guests! Matthew, these very cute lambs | :36:23. | :36:27.
aren't actually the ones involved in this case, | :36:28. | :36:29.
they're tame, hand-reared lambs. But I have to say, they all look | :36:30. | :36:31.
pretty similar to me! All farm livestock have to be | :36:32. | :36:42.
identified through tags. Sheep in particular, they have to have two | :36:43. | :36:47.
tags on each side for agricultural purposes. To prove a sheep's | :36:48. | :36:56.
heritage we have to rely on a DNA profile. Farmers can often tell them | :36:57. | :37:00.
apart but that's not going to stand up". How is DNA profiling being used | :37:01. | :37:06.
for sheep? Most farmers will know their stock but that's not enough to | :37:07. | :37:11.
prove that they are bears. In our case 50 sheep were stolen from a | :37:12. | :37:16.
farm and the farmer himself did some detective work amongst the farming | :37:17. | :37:24.
community and found that 20 ewes had been sold ten days after the theft. | :37:25. | :37:28.
He visited the farms, could see that they were here. Two months later | :37:29. | :37:33.
once the lambs were born we went with staff from the Animal and Plant | :37:34. | :37:37.
Health Agency. We took blood samples from the lambs and the Rams and were | :37:38. | :37:44.
able to DNA profile and directly link nine of the 15 lambs to the | :37:45. | :37:51.
Rams. That meant the mother of those lands were the stolen ewes. | :37:52. | :37:57.
Brilliant evidence, someone was charged and you eventually got a | :37:58. | :38:01.
convention. We had a conviction for handling stolen property. The | :38:02. | :38:06.
gentleman concerned had an eight-month sentence suspended for | :38:07. | :38:09.
two years and a ?1000 fine. The weight of the evidence gave him no | :38:10. | :38:14.
choice but to say yes, you got me. It shows that farmers are willing to | :38:15. | :38:18.
work with the police and give us the information, report crimes and give | :38:19. | :38:23.
us the intelligence. You are from a farming background and you want to | :38:24. | :38:25.
highlight the fact it's not just the value of what is stolen, it's the | :38:26. | :38:30.
fact this ruins someone's livelihood. 50 sheep being stolen is | :38:31. | :38:36.
worth about ?5,000, that's a big impact on a young family business. | :38:37. | :38:45.
LAMB BLEATS. The man in this case works to supplement the farming so | :38:46. | :38:49.
it impacts on the business. You would always encourage people to get | :38:50. | :38:57.
in touch on 101. These are definitely some of the cutest guests | :38:58. | :39:01.
we've had on this series but you might disagree with that! | :39:02. | :39:09.
This is the newest litter at the dog unit, they are just a few weeks old. | :39:10. | :39:16.
It'll be at least a year before they start their proper training to | :39:17. | :39:17.
become police dogs. But before that they need some TLC | :39:18. | :39:19.
and some careful handling. That's the process Stormzy | :39:20. | :39:22.
and Anna here are going through at the moment - | :39:23. | :39:24.
they're a few months old, and they're spending lots of time | :39:25. | :39:27.
with puppy walker Lesley. Lesley, tell us what you do | :39:28. | :39:29.
with these young dogs? Well, we get the dogs socialised. | :39:30. | :39:38.
They've got to be confident when they start their working life. We | :39:39. | :39:44.
take them everywhere. We get them used are all different sorts of | :39:45. | :39:50.
sounds, sights. It's very rewarding. They are quite a handful! You've | :39:51. | :39:58.
been doing this for 17 years. Yes. Why is that? I love it. It's very | :39:59. | :40:02.
rewarding and you're doing your bit for the community. All dogs are | :40:03. | :40:08.
different and you get a lot from handling them. I'm going to give | :40:09. | :40:14.
Stormzy back for a moment and come and talk to another puppy walker, PC | :40:15. | :40:19.
Gareth Taylor. You're a policeman but you don't work that the dog unit | :40:20. | :40:26.
and you're looking after Jenga who is 18 months. Yes, she's ready to | :40:27. | :40:30.
start her training. She's already to go. What motivates you? A job! It's | :40:31. | :40:38.
been a dream of mine to get onto the dog unit for a number of years. It's | :40:39. | :40:43.
all good experience. How difficult is it to give them back? Really | :40:44. | :40:48.
difficult, it's incredibly difficult. Thankfully one of the | :40:49. | :40:52.
puppies I previously walked, her handler keeps in touch with me. He | :40:53. | :41:00.
sends me pictures and it's great. I think I'm going to find it difficult | :41:01. | :41:06.
to give Stormzy back! Be back in a moment with the police dog who's | :41:07. | :41:10.
been lined up to bite me. Time now for a look at what's been | :41:11. | :41:12.
coming in on the calls, Detectives wanted to identify the | :41:13. | :41:23.
man seen on CCTV. Officers tell us they are now chasing up a potential | :41:24. | :41:28.
name. Also yesterday we were with the West Midlands Police cannabis | :41:29. | :41:32.
disposal team. It was an action packed show but the drama didn't end | :41:33. | :41:37.
there. If you hours later the team manager was flagged down by a | :41:38. | :41:41.
passing motorist and ended up delivering a baby at the roadside! A | :41:42. | :41:46.
very busy day for Mike and mum and baby are doing well. | :41:47. | :41:49.
So, Tina, where will you be tomorrow? | :41:50. | :41:51.
Rav, I'll be in Wiltshire seeing how paramedics train for extreme | :41:52. | :41:54.
incidents like chemical spills and train crashes. | :41:55. | :41:56.
And we'll also be out with ambulance crews in Bristol, | :41:57. | :41:58.
as they cope with the timewasters who dial 999 unnecessarily. | :41:59. | :42:07.
Now, I like dogs as much as anyone, but I'm about to test | :42:08. | :42:10.
Keith is here with a laugh his German Shepherd who is about to bite | :42:11. | :42:29.
me! -- Keith is here with Olaf. All the safety equipment is here, you've | :42:30. | :42:33.
got the sleeves on, you when to be in any danger really. When you | :42:34. | :42:38.
offered the arm Keith will send the dog into detainee. You ready? Not | :42:39. | :42:46.
really but let's it anyway. Keep fighting the dog. Stop fighting the | :42:47. | :42:49.
dog. Stop fighting him. Whenever you're ready Keith will release the | :42:50. | :42:57.
dog. Instantly the dog is released, that's the safety mechanism. As soon | :42:58. | :43:01.
as Keith asks the dog to release he goes back to his handler. That was | :43:02. | :43:05.
terrifying, even with all this padding. I would not want to be | :43:06. | :43:08.
someone Olaf is chasing! For more details about the crimes | :43:09. | :43:12.
on today's programme, Before we go, here's another look | :43:13. | :43:16.
at this morning's wanted faces. If any of them look familiar, | :43:17. | :43:20.
pick up the phone and tell We'll be back tomorrow | :43:21. | :43:23.
morning after Breakfast. | :43:24. | :43:27. |
