The 85-year-old grandmother attacked and robbed in her home. | :00:00. | :00:20.
I feel so sorry were not there for her. | :00:21. | :00:22.
And I'll be finding out what it takes to be a real life detective. | :00:23. | :00:26.
Hello and welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. | :00:27. | :00:53.
As always, we need your help to solve the crimes | :00:54. | :00:55.
The crack team of detectives hunting for fugitives hiding out in London. | :00:56. | :01:03.
They've got this ghost in the locker if you like, | :01:04. | :01:05.
and they're waiting for someone to come and remind them | :01:06. | :01:13.
of something they'd hoped they could put | :01:14. | :01:15.
A boy with autism on his way home from school, attacked | :01:16. | :01:18.
We don't know how dangerous he is, we don't know if the next child | :01:19. | :01:27.
he picks on is going to be even younger or even more vulnerable. | :01:28. | :01:32.
Today Michelle is at the Met's state-of-the-art police college | :01:33. | :01:34.
I'll be finding out how the police train detectives to investigate | :01:35. | :01:43.
crime scenes like this one and crack cases. | :01:44. | :01:44.
Thanks Michelle, can't wait for that. | :01:45. | :01:47.
First up, a terrifying ordeal for a partially | :01:48. | :01:49.
sighted grandmother, robbed in her home. | :01:50. | :02:00.
I can't believe that anyone would have wanted to hurt my mum. She's | :02:01. | :02:10.
elderly, she is vulnerable. She felt safe in her home but not any more. | :02:11. | :02:23.
Avtar has lived in Southall for the past 50 years. She is the head of | :02:24. | :02:29.
her family and loved by all. My mum has got a larger than life | :02:30. | :02:35.
personality and she is fun. Even all our friends or call her big mum. We | :02:36. | :02:45.
came over from India on the 16th of January 1965 so mum has lived in | :02:46. | :02:52.
that house for a good 40 years. My parents were known as the auntie and | :02:53. | :02:57.
uncle that held hands. My dad worshipped my mum. Since Avtar's | :02:58. | :03:01.
husband died in 2004, she has lived on her own. The family have done | :03:02. | :03:06.
everything they can to protect her independence, even installing a | :03:07. | :03:08.
complex CCTV systems throughout her home. In order for her to retain her | :03:09. | :03:17.
independence, my brother got the camera installed so we can keep an | :03:18. | :03:20.
eye on her. My mum can have the peace of mind, knowing that we can | :03:21. | :03:26.
watch her. Unfortunately, on this horrible, horrible day, I was out. I | :03:27. | :03:31.
mean, we just weren't watching the cameras. | :03:32. | :03:42.
On a Wednesday afternoon, Avtar was at home alone when she heard a knock | :03:43. | :03:51.
at the door. It was 2:30pm. She felt quite safe just opening the door. | :03:52. | :03:57.
She just expected one of her children. She did not expect to be | :03:58. | :04:05.
attacked in her own home. Avtar was confronted by two men. They forced | :04:06. | :04:10.
their way in. They pushed her to the floor, frisked her, and ripped off | :04:11. | :04:15.
her earrings, bracelets, rings and a necklace. They threatened her in | :04:16. | :04:20.
Punjabi. Bay said a word in Punjabi which has double meanings, they said | :04:21. | :04:26.
a word which could mean to hit or to kill. What they did next is truly | :04:27. | :04:35.
horrific. They grabbed hold of her hands and legs and dragged her into | :04:36. | :04:36.
the bedroom. She must have been so, so scared. | :04:37. | :04:50.
And even thinking about it scares us. It is just horrible. We feel so | :04:51. | :04:55.
helpless that we weren't there for her. Petrified of what they might | :04:56. | :05:05.
do, Avtar managed to stand but could only look on as they ransacked house | :05:06. | :05:10.
for a full ten minutes. -- ransacked her house. All they could find was a | :05:11. | :05:15.
small amount of cash which Avtar had saved for the local temple. They | :05:16. | :05:17.
then fled the house. Mum didn't have her long scarf | :05:18. | :05:33.
around her neck or her head when she ran out of the house, and that would | :05:34. | :05:37.
be something that she would never, ever do. To see her running outside | :05:38. | :05:41.
the house like a scared animal and holding onto the door, and I've seen | :05:42. | :05:44.
the footage, and just seeing my mum's face, she just... She just | :05:45. | :05:53.
looks lost. The level of violence used in this crime is completely and | :05:54. | :05:59.
utterly disproportionate to what was stolen. The jewellery had | :06:00. | :06:03.
sentimental value but its financial value was of no great significance. | :06:04. | :06:11.
But the long-term effects that this has had on Avtar and her family is | :06:12. | :06:20.
incalculable. It is my feeling that they knew that she was alone at the | :06:21. | :06:23.
time and I would urge the community in Southall on West London, to come | :06:24. | :06:33.
forward and assist us. The guys that did what they did to my mum, they | :06:34. | :06:38.
don't realise what they've done. It has impacted my mum's life in so | :06:39. | :06:43.
many ways. She is not as confident as she used to be. She does not even | :06:44. | :06:52.
open the back door now which cooking. Even with the chain on, | :06:53. | :06:55.
she's reluctant to do that and in the summer, she won't sit in the | :06:56. | :06:59.
garden and less money is her. She doesn't put clothes out on the | :07:00. | :07:03.
washing line by herself. They didn't have to do what they did in order to | :07:04. | :07:09.
get what they got. They didn't need to touch her. They didn't need to | :07:10. | :07:13.
come you know, frisked or scare her and scare her in such a way. They | :07:14. | :07:17.
could have just taken it. She is a little old lady. | :07:18. | :07:25.
A terrifying ordeal for Avtar. I am with DC Nicholas Strachan, who is | :07:26. | :07:32.
investigating this. There has been an arrest made in the case. Yes, in | :07:33. | :07:40.
November 2015, I arrested one Ahsan Ali, at the time a 21-year-old | :07:41. | :07:45.
Pakistani national. In February this year, he was sentenced to nine years | :07:46. | :07:51.
in prison for this brutal robbery. He unfortunately has not cooperated | :07:52. | :07:56.
in naming his accomplice. So it is the second man you are looking to | :07:57. | :08:00.
identify today? Indeed, the second suspect I'm looking for, at the time | :08:01. | :08:04.
of the events, I would estimate he was aged between 17-21. He is a | :08:05. | :08:12.
Punjabi speaker. As you can see from the CC TV, he stands about five foot | :08:13. | :08:16.
seven, to five foot ten, of slim build with a very large nose and | :08:17. | :08:20.
pronounced dark eyebrows. This has had a real impact on Avtar and her | :08:21. | :08:26.
family, hasn't it? It was tremendously traumatic for Avtar. | :08:27. | :08:30.
She has bounced back to a degree but nevertheless, to this day, she still | :08:31. | :08:35.
lives in terror, in her own home, feeling that this unidentified man | :08:36. | :08:40.
will return. Hopefully someone will be able to name him. Thank you for | :08:41. | :08:42.
joining us. Now it's time to take a look at some | :08:43. | :08:45.
more criminals caught on CCTV. Just so you know, the first one | :08:46. | :08:48.
of these is pretty nasty. It is closing time at this club on | :08:49. | :08:59.
Croydon high Street. But keep your eyes peeled for what happens next. A | :09:00. | :09:04.
woman and her friend make their way over to the parked up taxi they have | :09:05. | :09:10.
booked. But this man, walking past them, take the chance and get in. | :09:11. | :09:15.
The woman tells the cabbie that she's the one who has ordered the | :09:16. | :09:19.
car, not the man sitting in the back. She is annoyed and tells him | :09:20. | :09:23.
to get out. What happens next is shopping. Having punched the woman | :09:24. | :09:29.
once, he goes for her again, until the door staff intervened. The | :09:30. | :09:34.
victim needed specialist treatment on her eyes but luckily has now made | :09:35. | :09:37.
a full recovery. Police need your help to catch this man. You know | :09:38. | :09:45.
what to do. Look closely in the bottom left-hand | :09:46. | :09:50.
corner. This bird's eye view shows a man smashing his way into an | :09:51. | :09:55.
industrial unit in Buckinghamshire. As he sprints into the warehouse, we | :09:56. | :09:59.
get a good look at his face. Do you recognise him? He squirts liquid | :10:00. | :10:04.
from the bottle he is carrying all over the stock of newspapers and | :10:05. | :10:11.
magazines. Then he likes it. But he's not finished yet. On his way | :10:12. | :10:15.
out, he set the loading bay on fire, too. The warehouse quickly goes up | :10:16. | :10:20.
in flames, totally gutting the building. Luckily on this occasion, | :10:21. | :10:26.
no one was hurt. But around ?30,000 worth of stock was destroyed. This | :10:27. | :10:33.
dangerous firestarter needs to be caught. Name him. | :10:34. | :10:42.
This homeowner's CCTV catches a visitor to their house in Ashford, | :10:43. | :10:47.
Kent, but no one is in and he's not invited. But he is still desperate | :10:48. | :10:53.
to get inside. It looks like he's having a bit of trouble working the | :10:54. | :10:57.
blinds, though. Especially when the alarm goes off. Police believe this | :10:58. | :11:06.
man may be responsible for several burglaries in the area and want to | :11:07. | :11:11.
know who he is. Can you tell us his name? | :11:12. | :11:14.
If you recognise anyone, now is the time to call. | :11:15. | :11:17.
Numbers are on the screen. Or you can text us on 63399. | :11:18. | :11:20.
Text CW, space and then your message. | :11:21. | :11:21.
Texts will be charged at your standard message rate. | :11:22. | :11:24.
Or send us an email. The address is [email protected]. | :11:25. | :11:29.
Now this building is full of surprises. | :11:30. | :11:31.
This may look like an unremarkable corridor. | :11:32. | :11:37.
Behind every door is a potential crime scene. | :11:38. | :11:43.
Who knows what may have happened in this post office or in a domestic | :11:44. | :11:48.
situation, for example, what may have occurred in this flat? | :11:49. | :11:56.
Detective Inspector Trevor Borley runs the investigation faculty here. | :11:57. | :11:59.
Your offices can train for every different type of scenario, can't | :12:00. | :12:03.
they? That's right, these rooms are set up to represent real-life crime | :12:04. | :12:07.
scene officers may be faced with on the street. You have even got a bar. | :12:08. | :12:14.
So, Trevor, set the scene. What is going on here? The scene we have | :12:15. | :12:17.
created is an armed robbery, and one of the priorities for me is to try | :12:18. | :12:21.
to find the suspect who committed the crime. When you arrive at a | :12:22. | :12:24.
crime scene like this, obviously it's against the clock and times of | :12:25. | :12:29.
the essence. How do you decide what to prioritise, what is important and | :12:30. | :12:34.
what not? We have different word is, firstly, preservation of life, | :12:35. | :12:37.
making sure no one is injured and requires medical treatment and after | :12:38. | :12:41.
that, other fast time opportunities, like CCTV in the bar, useful to use | :12:42. | :12:45.
that to see if we can identify anybody, and also I would have | :12:46. | :12:48.
detected out making witness enquiries. You have a scenes of | :12:49. | :12:52.
crime officer and a detective constable here. What are they doing | :12:53. | :12:56.
and how do they work alongside Edu le? The senior detective, me on this | :12:57. | :13:04.
occasion, would have a consultation with the scenes of crime officer and | :13:05. | :13:06.
we would decide the priorities around evidential recovery, DNA, | :13:07. | :13:08.
fingerprints. We would photograph the premises and as you can see on | :13:09. | :13:11.
the floor, we have a baseball bat which appears to have blood on it. | :13:12. | :13:15.
We would look for potential DNA evidence and fingerprints, | :13:16. | :13:18.
potentially blood on the shirt that is also on the floor and also, we | :13:19. | :13:21.
can see what appears to be a spent shell casing from a firearm. We | :13:22. | :13:25.
would recover all the evidence. All very important so I might as will | :13:26. | :13:30.
help you out. As we continue gathering all the evidence, make | :13:31. | :13:34.
sure you join us later as the investigation continues. Who knows | :13:35. | :13:34.
what clues we might find? I'm looking forward | :13:35. | :13:37.
to finding out whodunnit! There's lots more to come this | :13:38. | :13:39.
morning, including... The daughter who had the last | :13:40. | :13:40.
memories of her mum stolen Of course, the first | :13:41. | :13:43.
thing in my mind is, "Oh no, the memories, | :13:44. | :13:47.
the photos, that were And the colourful police car helping | :13:48. | :13:49.
in the fight against hate crime. We'll be speaking to actor | :13:50. | :13:55.
and presenter Adam Pearson about why Christine Menzies was a happy | :13:56. | :13:59.
16-year-old living with her family in north-west Germany, | :14:00. | :14:10.
where her father was But 24 years ago today, | :14:11. | :14:11.
her body was discovered in undergrowth approximately eight | :14:12. | :14:16.
miles from the base. Her killer | :14:17. | :14:19.
has never been found. To mark the anniversary | :14:20. | :14:21.
of her death, officers re-investigating the case | :14:22. | :14:25.
are making their first ever national UK television | :14:26. | :14:27.
appeal for information. I am joined by Captain Alex Spanton | :14:28. | :14:29.
from the Royal Military Police. Good morning. What do you know about | :14:30. | :14:41.
the events leading up to her death? On the Saturday, Christine and her | :14:42. | :14:46.
friend had been to the Rhine Army Summer Show, and in the evening went | :14:47. | :14:50.
on to Club 47, which was a nightclub on RAF Gutersloh at the time. She | :14:51. | :14:55.
made arrangements for her parents to pick her up at midnight and they had | :14:56. | :14:59.
arrived earlier, at about 11:30pm, and seen her leaving the club. They | :15:00. | :15:03.
spoke with her, Christine was allowed to go back into the club for | :15:04. | :15:07.
the final half an hour. From there, we have the last sighting of her | :15:08. | :15:12.
leaving the club at the back of the building about midnight. The next | :15:13. | :15:18.
time we are aware of where she was was when her body was found at | :15:19. | :15:23.
4:45pm on the Sunday afternoon in undergrowth, as you say, a distance | :15:24. | :15:28.
away from the base. This is the area she was found, just a few miles from | :15:29. | :15:34.
the military base. We have said this was 24 years ago and you have not | :15:35. | :15:37.
given up on finding out who did this. Her parents are still | :15:38. | :15:41.
desperate for answers and some kind of closure and we can hear from them | :15:42. | :15:42.
now. She could be really funny without | :15:43. | :15:51.
knowing she was being funny. Little things that she would do, they were | :15:52. | :15:57.
really funny. I miss her every day. We are stranded. We've been stranded | :15:58. | :16:02.
where we are for the last 24 years. Nothing has moved forward. If | :16:03. | :16:07.
somebody comes forward with information, that would make us feel | :16:08. | :16:11.
that maybe, at last, we will get justice. Desperate for | :16:12. | :16:17.
answers, as you could understand. What leads do you have in this case? | :16:18. | :16:22.
The original investigation had forensic evidence currently being | :16:23. | :16:26.
reviewed with new technologies. But very little new information at the | :16:27. | :16:29.
moment. That is the appeal for today. There was fibre evidence | :16:30. | :16:35.
suggesting that Christine was wrapped in a union Jack duvet cover | :16:36. | :16:43.
that was sold at the time by the NAAFI. That has never been found. | :16:44. | :16:48.
And what about her shoes? They have never been found. These were not for | :16:49. | :16:52.
actual shoes, but similar to what she was wearing at the time of her | :16:53. | :16:57.
disappearance? Yes. It could trigger someone in -- trigger something in | :16:58. | :17:01.
someone's mind? It could do. And it's worth saying that 24 years ago | :17:02. | :17:05.
in a military base in Germany, many people may have finished their | :17:06. | :17:08.
military service and be living in the UK? These are people you are | :17:09. | :17:14.
appealing to? Absolutely, anyone who can help us out with Christine's | :17:15. | :17:15.
movements when she was seen for it from midnight to when her body was | :17:16. | :17:26.
found, anyone who can help us progress with this case. | :17:27. | :17:27.
It's been 24 years of pain for Christine's family. | :17:28. | :17:30.
Please, if you can help in any way do get in touch | :17:31. | :17:33.
We've been delving into the work of detectives today. They actually have | :17:34. | :17:41.
all sorts of different specialisms, from burglaries to fraud, armed | :17:42. | :17:42.
robberies to murder. But there's one team in the Met | :17:43. | :17:44.
who have a pretty unique job. They are the Extradition Unit, | :17:45. | :17:47.
and we followed them as they tracked down the fugitives who cross borders | :17:48. | :17:50.
to escape the law. London. Home to around 9 million | :17:51. | :18:03.
people. Hidden amongst them? Fugitives. Wanted for crimes | :18:04. | :18:06.
committed across the world... That if they think they are safe, they | :18:07. | :18:11.
are wrong. It is the job of a specialist team of detectives to | :18:12. | :18:15.
find them and bring them to justice. We are actively and routinely trying | :18:16. | :18:21.
to find some of the most wanted criminals from across Europe and the | :18:22. | :18:30.
world. It is 6am, and work starts early for the Met's extradition | :18:31. | :18:34.
unit. With thousands of warrants issued for people wanted in other | :18:35. | :18:39.
countries, this dedicated team are responsible for making more than 500 | :18:40. | :18:45.
arrests per year. Today, DSP trance and his team are on the hunt for a | :18:46. | :18:52.
fugitive convicted of crimes. In Poland. This is the chap we are | :18:53. | :18:58.
looking for this morning. He is wanted in Poland. The team arrive at | :18:59. | :19:01.
what they believe to be the wanted man's address. The offences took | :19:02. | :19:07.
place about ten years ago now but they are serious offences. An | :19:08. | :19:13.
offence of robbery where he was involved in beating a man and | :19:14. | :19:17.
causing him quite serious injuries over a protracted period of time. | :19:18. | :19:20.
Also, in controlling the number of girls, a prostitute ring in Poland. | :19:21. | :19:27.
Serious enough offences for us to warrant getting out of bed at 4:30am | :19:28. | :19:32.
this morning and coming to try and arrest him. As Pete approaches the | :19:33. | :19:37.
front of the house, the team cover other exits in case the fugitive | :19:38. | :19:39.
decides to do a runner... Nobody is answering the door, but | :19:40. | :20:02.
convinced someone is inside, the team stay put. Good morning. Sorry | :20:03. | :20:10.
to trouble you, Detective Pete Rance from the police. Do you understand | :20:11. | :20:17.
why we are here? OK, from the Metropolitan Police extradition | :20:18. | :20:19.
unit, I'm Detective Sergeant Pete Rance. Can you tell me your full | :20:20. | :20:30.
name? British? Polish? Sebastien, there is a European arrest warrant | :20:31. | :20:35.
issued for you by Poland. I have to arrest you on that warrant, you do | :20:36. | :20:38.
not have to say anything, anything you do say may be given in evidence. | :20:39. | :20:42.
Do you understand? You are not in trouble in this country but there | :20:43. | :20:46.
needs to be a court process to see whether a judge decides to send you | :20:47. | :20:51.
back to Poland. We will take you to a local police station today and | :20:52. | :20:53.
then take you to Westminster Magistrates' Court and the court | :20:54. | :21:03.
process will begin. How is your English, do you understand what I am | :21:04. | :21:06.
saying? Knowing he can no longer evade justice, he makes a desperate | :21:07. | :21:09.
phone call to his lawyer. But there is no response. Bring the phone, and | :21:10. | :21:12.
you can call him in the car, or when we get to the police station or when | :21:13. | :21:15.
we leave the police station. We will stay with you now until we go to | :21:16. | :21:20.
court, OK? This fugitive, who has been living with his wife and | :21:21. | :21:24.
children in London for the last three years now faces a real | :21:25. | :21:27.
prospect of being extradited back to Poland. OK? Yes. We will take him | :21:28. | :21:40.
now to Belgravia police station. He knew that the writing was on the | :21:41. | :21:42.
wall and that the time would come for him to have to say goodbye to | :21:43. | :21:48.
his family. At the police station we will take into the custody officer | :21:49. | :21:50.
and explain why he has been arrested. Pete discovers life on the | :21:51. | :21:57.
run has taken its toll on Sebastien. How long have you been | :21:58. | :22:07.
here? Three years. And you've been waiting everyday for this? I thought | :22:08. | :22:09.
that was the case. It's now a race against time. By | :22:10. | :22:27.
law, they have to get into court as soon as possible, within hours of | :22:28. | :22:31.
his arrest. It will be up to the judge to decide whether he stays, or | :22:32. | :22:36.
goes back to Poland to finish his sentence. He has said to us that he | :22:37. | :22:42.
was waiting for the knock on the door for some three years. I've got | :22:43. | :22:46.
this ghost in the locker, if you like. They are waiting for somebody | :22:47. | :22:52.
to come and remind them of something that they had hoped they could | :22:53. | :22:57.
forget. There is no time for reflection. For Pete and his team, | :22:58. | :23:01.
is time to track down the next fugitive... | :23:02. | :23:03.
I'm joined now by Detective Sergeant Pete Rance | :23:04. | :23:05.
What is the latest on the man we saw in the film there? His case is next | :23:06. | :23:16.
before the courts on June 16, we are awaiting a decision from the court | :23:17. | :23:20.
now. There are some potentially dangerous fugitives here and you | :23:21. | :23:23.
need the public's help tracking them down? Yes, the first case that we've | :23:24. | :23:37.
asked for help with is Casius-Cley Bancuta and Stelu Banica, two | :23:38. | :23:39.
Romanians accused of attempted murder last August, they beat a man | :23:40. | :23:43.
with a shovel and night. We believe they are in London and if the public | :23:44. | :23:46.
see them or know them, do not approach them but call us on this | :23:47. | :23:51.
number. And another man? This historic case goes back to 1999. | :23:52. | :23:57.
Veselyn Mateev Kavaldziev is wanted for murder. We believe again that he | :23:58. | :24:01.
may be in London and we would ask the public not to approach them, | :24:02. | :24:04.
give us a call on this number so that we can speak to them. | :24:05. | :24:06.
If you recognise any of these men, please call now using | :24:07. | :24:10.
And you can see more of Pete and his team in action | :24:11. | :24:14.
in a new episode of Fugitives on Friday the 23rd of June | :24:15. | :24:17.
Now, every parent wants to know their children are safe | :24:18. | :24:22.
when they make their way to and from school. | :24:23. | :24:24.
But for one mother that ended when her young son | :24:25. | :24:26.
Willesden Green in north-west London. There are a number of | :24:27. | :24:42.
schools in the vicinity, and it is a common sight to see children walking | :24:43. | :24:45.
the streets on the way home in the afternoon. It is an area where there | :24:46. | :24:51.
are luxe McCrickard lot 's of young kids and they have grown up together | :24:52. | :24:55.
and go to school together. -- there are lots of kids. | :24:56. | :25:00.
Growing up there are a lot of kids, and it feel safe at that time of | :25:01. | :25:03.
day. For this mother it was crucial her son had the confidence to walk | :25:04. | :25:08.
home alone, because routine is very important for children with autism. | :25:09. | :25:13.
We spent a long time over the summer holidays teaching him the route, so | :25:14. | :25:16.
that he would have the independence to be able to walk with his friends. | :25:17. | :25:22.
It is important for him not to always be too cotton world. He needs | :25:23. | :25:27.
to be like the other kids. Her son has a form of high functioning | :25:28. | :25:31.
autism, which makes it hard for him to read the intentions of other | :25:32. | :25:38.
people. He is very caring, he's a very good boy. But trusting. So if | :25:39. | :25:42.
somebody has asked him for his help, he will always try to help them, no | :25:43. | :25:47.
matter what. He's not really able to understand that somebody may be | :25:48. | :25:51.
lying. On the 11th of January this year, her son was on his way home | :25:52. | :25:55.
when a man pushing a bicycle came up and spoke to him. A man approached | :25:56. | :26:01.
him, and asked him for help. He said he wanted my son to take a picture | :26:02. | :26:06.
to send to his brother who was in Norway. He wanted him to take a | :26:07. | :26:10.
picture at his house. He wanted his brother to see that he had a house. | :26:11. | :26:17.
The man led the school boy off the main road, and towards a nearby | :26:18. | :26:25.
housing estate on Griffin Close. He deliberately had taken him to quite | :26:26. | :26:28.
a secluded spot, so he went along with the guy to take the photo. As | :26:29. | :26:32.
he was concentrating on looking at the man's phone to take the photo, | :26:33. | :26:37.
the man came up behind him and grabbed him. It was then that the | :26:38. | :26:44.
man sexually assaulted the school boy. He said that he was grabbed, | :26:45. | :26:50.
and he held him, and I think that was the most frightening thing for | :26:51. | :26:54.
him. He felt he couldn't get away. The guy held him. He knew it wasn't | :26:55. | :27:02.
right, and he felt very, very uncomfortable about it. I was at | :27:03. | :27:06.
work, sitting on the computer. My phone went and it was my son ringing | :27:07. | :27:12.
from home. He was quite upset. He something happened to him on the way | :27:13. | :27:17.
home and he found it difficult to explain what it was. I rushed home, | :27:18. | :27:23.
and on the way I called the police. Police investigating the crime have | :27:24. | :27:27.
released an image of the man, taken from CCTV at the scene of the | :27:28. | :27:31.
offence. In the hope that someone will recognise him. This is a very | :27:32. | :27:36.
serious crime. It's a vulnerable school boy that suffers from autism. | :27:37. | :27:40.
It is an assault which has happened in broad daylight while he walked | :27:41. | :27:44.
home from school. It is particularly concerning for the local community | :27:45. | :27:50.
and we would urge anyone with information to come forward. This | :27:51. | :27:53.
crime is also particularly concerning because the boy in | :27:54. | :27:57.
question is quite young in age, but looks somewhat younger than his | :27:58. | :28:01.
years as well. So it's a concern that maybe this suspect is looking | :28:02. | :28:09.
for children of a very young age. Even months later, this attack has | :28:10. | :28:12.
left its mark on the boy, and his mother. It's a horrible feeling. | :28:13. | :28:20.
It's a shadow cast over our lives. I just think that it is very sad that | :28:21. | :28:24.
he found out in such a nasty way that people are not always kind. Not | :28:25. | :28:29.
everyone is like him. I hope with the help of people watching this | :28:30. | :28:33.
that we may be able to pertaining to the man who did this to him. Make | :28:34. | :28:37.
sure he doesn't do it to anyone else. We don't know how dangerous | :28:38. | :28:41.
years, we don't know if the next child he picks on is even younger or | :28:42. | :28:42.
even more vulnerable. With me now is Detective | :28:43. | :28:46.
Constable Charlie Guy This was a really worrying | :28:47. | :28:47.
attack wasn't it? Yes. This was particularly worrying | :28:48. | :28:59.
as the young boy suffers from autism, which makes him even more | :29:00. | :29:03.
vulnerable. He was a schoolboy on his way home from school, and the | :29:04. | :29:07.
attack happened in broad daylight. The suspect met him on Park Avenue | :29:08. | :29:12.
and led him to Griffin Close, the estate nearby. There is some good | :29:13. | :29:16.
CCTV footage of this man, isn't there? Yes, we got some from Griffin | :29:17. | :29:21.
Close. It shows the suspect and young boy walking up towards the | :29:22. | :29:25.
alleyway and they emerge about a minute or so later. The boy runs off | :29:26. | :29:29.
towards his home address. The suspect we are looking for is Asian, | :29:30. | :29:34.
possibly south-east Asian and in his 20s. Around 5'4". Slim build, he has | :29:35. | :29:40.
a distinctive Green Park a jacket with an emblem on his sleeve and a | :29:41. | :29:45.
grey beanie hat. The boy mentions that he had a push bike which we do | :29:46. | :29:49.
not have a picture of, but he mentioned something about a brother | :29:50. | :29:53.
in Norway. We do not know if this is true or not. He had a phone with him | :29:54. | :29:59.
that was not an iPhone. The mother mentioned that she just wants a | :30:00. | :30:03.
name, someone to recognise this man, doesn't she? Yes, we need closure on | :30:04. | :30:07.
this case. Someone out there would know who this man is. We urge anyone | :30:08. | :30:09.
who knows who it is come forward. If you recognise this man please | :30:10. | :30:12.
pick up the phone and call now, Now, this doesn't look | :30:13. | :30:16.
like your usual police vehicle but this Rainbow Car is actually | :30:17. | :30:22.
helping in the fight And stepping out is PC Ian Ashton | :30:23. | :30:24.
from Lancashire Constabulary. Good morning. Thank you for joining | :30:25. | :30:35.
us. Tell us about your car. This is one of our new response vehicles, De | :30:36. | :30:40.
Vreede up in the rainbow colours, specifically to raise awareness in | :30:41. | :30:46.
the LGBT community on the need to report hate crime. How are you using | :30:47. | :30:51.
it to do this? The vehicle is out 24 hours a day on a normal shift with | :30:52. | :30:56.
response teams, responding to normal 999 incidents and other incident | :30:57. | :30:59.
with the police. It is a focal point for people to see what it is, come | :31:00. | :31:03.
up and speak to us and find out what it is about and it's about | :31:04. | :31:05.
increasing confidence and trust. Breaking down the barriers are | :31:06. | :31:10.
people can come and talk. Is it helping? Yes, it's really good, | :31:11. | :31:13.
people see what it is about and it gives them confidence and trust to | :31:14. | :31:16.
come forward. You are finding there is more hate crime at the moment? | :31:17. | :31:23.
Yes, in places like London and Manchester, we tend to see a spike | :31:24. | :31:26.
in hate crime but we want to encourage people to report. It is | :31:27. | :31:29.
massively underreported nationally and locally. And things like this | :31:30. | :31:34.
are helping. Thanks for joining us and good luck with it. | :31:35. | :31:36.
As PC Ian Ashton was saying there, hate crime is a growing problem. | :31:37. | :31:39.
According to recent Home Office figures the number | :31:40. | :31:41.
of hate crime incidents rose 19% from 2015 to 2016. | :31:42. | :31:45.
Disability hate crime has risen most and Adam Pearson is one of the | :31:46. | :31:51.
people who knows why it is so important to deal with it. You have | :31:52. | :31:55.
had some sickening abuse yourself. What kind of things have you | :31:56. | :32:00.
encountered? There's a real spectrum. Abuse in the streets, I | :32:01. | :32:06.
was just at a bus stop and there was a guy with a camera phone, getting | :32:07. | :32:09.
in my face, asking if I was from this planet, taking photos. Then you | :32:10. | :32:14.
get the good old keyboard warriors. People who are only brave and they | :32:15. | :32:17.
are behind the keyboard and you find that a lot as well? Yes, everyone | :32:18. | :32:22.
has an opinion and they are not afraid to give it. I have to say, | :32:23. | :32:27.
some people think there is no point reporting to police but what would | :32:28. | :32:31.
you say to those people question mark absolutely a point, hate crimes | :32:32. | :32:34.
are real stigma that affects people in a real, long-term way. It is very | :32:35. | :32:39.
easy to point and say it is harmless name-calling, boys will be boys and | :32:40. | :32:42.
what have you but the only way we will ever bring those statistics | :32:43. | :32:46.
down, and stop hate crime happening is to report it efficiently and | :32:47. | :32:50.
effectively. How do you find something like the Rainbow Car | :32:51. | :32:55.
question mark is it a good anything that brings down hate crime gets my | :32:56. | :32:58.
vote. You don't mind saying that you are quite strong-willed, and you get | :32:59. | :33:02.
some abuse and you can take it more than some people but I want to | :33:03. | :33:06.
hammer the point home that no one should stand for this at all. It | :33:07. | :33:09.
does not matter who you are, it is not acceptable, it is illegal and | :33:10. | :33:13.
you want to make sure... As you say, it is criminal. It is criminal | :33:14. | :33:18.
behaviour and you should treat it as such. Thank you for joining us. And | :33:19. | :33:21.
I'm sorry that you have that awful abuse, but very important words you | :33:22. | :33:28.
have just said, and let's hope the Rainbow Car helps others to come | :33:29. | :33:31.
forward, as Adam says, and report hate crime. It is worth knowing that | :33:32. | :33:33.
the victims of any crime can speak to victim support. The number is on | :33:34. | :33:35.
your screen now. Next, a woman in Tottenham in north | :33:36. | :33:39.
London, still grieving the recent loss of her mum, has been left | :33:40. | :33:43.
devastated after the last memories of her were stolen | :33:44. | :33:46.
by a heartless thief. As an only child to a single parent, | :33:47. | :33:59.
Connie had always been very close to her mum. Said a household is a very | :34:00. | :34:05.
small household, it has always been me and my mum so for me, family | :34:06. | :34:10.
really is my mum. Originally from China, Connie came to London to | :34:11. | :34:14.
study and stayed when she got a job in the city. Three years ago, her | :34:15. | :34:21.
mother came to join her. She doesn't speak that much English. I was her | :34:22. | :34:25.
eyes and ears. So yeah, we had a very close bond. But their reunion | :34:26. | :34:30.
was overshadowed, as her mum had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. | :34:31. | :34:35.
She was quite young, she was not even 60. The type of cancer she had | :34:36. | :34:42.
was very rare. In her last months, Connie's mum recorded her final | :34:43. | :34:48.
memories on her phone. Photos of our last trip, photos of her in the | :34:49. | :34:53.
hospital bed, in the hospice. Her last ever photo. Really, just the | :34:54. | :34:58.
entire last year of her life. In the weeks after her death, Connie kept | :34:59. | :35:02.
her mum's phone close to her in case any friends had not heard the news | :35:03. | :35:07.
about her death. Thereof still a lot of phone calls and messages from her | :35:08. | :35:12.
old friends, either in China or in the UK so I carry it with me, to let | :35:13. | :35:20.
people know. Two months after her mother passed away, Connie was out | :35:21. | :35:28.
shopping at Tottenham beat up. We were decorating the bathroom so I | :35:29. | :35:32.
went to buy some tiles. As always, she had her mum's phone close at | :35:33. | :35:37.
hand. At that time, I was at the peak of my grief, thinking about | :35:38. | :35:40.
every day so I was constantly aware of where the phone is. She was | :35:41. | :35:44.
leading her shopping into the boot of the car when a man her. He made | :35:45. | :35:50.
some small talk and I was small talking back. I remember the last | :35:51. | :35:56.
thing that he said to me was, "Don't worry, I'll keep the area safe". But | :35:57. | :36:03.
keeping the area safe was the last thing on this brazen criminal's | :36:04. | :36:07.
mind. I slammed the door closed, put the trolley away, returned to the | :36:08. | :36:11.
car, which probably overall takes half a minute and immediately, I | :36:12. | :36:15.
realised I can't see my bag any more. Worst of all, in the bag was | :36:16. | :36:24.
her mum's phone. Of course, the first thing in my mind is," oh, no, | :36:25. | :36:31.
the memories, the photos, mum's words that were saved on the phone". | :36:32. | :36:35.
Desperate for its return, Connie used a member of staff's phone to | :36:36. | :36:39.
text the thief in an attempt to appeal to his conscience. You have | :36:40. | :36:44.
my dead mother 's phone. Please come back. I will pay you, no questions | :36:45. | :36:51.
asked. She tried to use her phone tracking app to locate it. I | :36:52. | :36:55.
realised he's on the move, away from me. That was the point when I lost | :36:56. | :37:03.
hope. We did receive a phone call from him. It was silence. But | :37:04. | :37:11.
afterwards, he hung up. Unfortunately, the phone is switched | :37:12. | :37:16.
off on Stoke Newington high road. We understand we're not going to the | :37:17. | :37:19.
property back but what we would hope is that someone would be able to | :37:20. | :37:24.
identify this man because of the nature of what he has done. He | :37:25. | :37:29.
clearly hasn't cared at all about the hurt that he was causing. To | :37:30. | :37:34.
have that crucian removed, that her mother prepared for her, -- that | :37:35. | :37:41.
cushion removed. I can't imagine how hard that would be to deal with. It | :37:42. | :37:47.
was a shame from my part that I did not back up the phone in time. | :37:48. | :37:50.
Partially because I felt I would never lose it. Partially because, | :37:51. | :37:55.
you know, backing up the phone was the last thing I wanted to do every | :37:56. | :38:01.
day and there was a lot going on back then. -- last thing on my to-do | :38:02. | :38:04.
list every day. I'm worried about forgetting the moment that we spent | :38:05. | :38:08.
together, yeah. So that is what impacts me the most. | :38:09. | :38:11.
PC Hannah Woodfield is investigating. | :38:12. | :38:16.
We know that Connie was able to track the phone for a short while | :38:17. | :38:23.
afterwards. Yes, she was able to use the phone tracking app to track the | :38:24. | :38:26.
phone from Tottenham to soak Newington. Wattimena but the | :38:27. | :38:31.
suspect? He's approximately five foot eight, five or ten, Middle East | :38:32. | :38:34.
and Turkish and appearance, dark black Haywood is greying, and the | :38:35. | :38:38.
victim said he had a prominent nose. This case is really important to | :38:39. | :38:42.
you, isn't it? It was the first case I was aside when I came to Haringey | :38:43. | :38:46.
Borough and I would like some justice for the absolutely terrible | :38:47. | :38:50.
situation she had with the phone being taken. This is the thing, the | :38:51. | :38:55.
phone was really important to her, the sentimental value. Yes, the | :38:56. | :38:59.
phone contained memories and messages from her dead mother and | :39:00. | :39:02.
you can't put a price on that. It is definitely worth more than the value | :39:03. | :39:07.
of the phone. If anyone recognises this man, please get in touch. You | :39:08. | :39:13.
can e-mail or send a text, any information at all, get in touch. | :39:14. | :39:15.
Now it's time for a look at today's Wanted Faces. | :39:16. | :39:18.
Starting with 33-year-old Mitchell Harris. | :39:19. | :39:19.
He was charged in connection with a violent disorder in Rugby | :39:20. | :39:22.
town centre in which four local men were attacked. | :39:23. | :39:24.
He was due in court, but didn't turn up. | :39:25. | :39:26.
Originally from Sunderland, he may now be working | :39:27. | :39:29.
Or do you recognise 26-year-old Paul Daniel Heaton? | :39:30. | :39:36.
He was convicted at York Crown Court of supplying Class A drugs | :39:37. | :39:39.
across Scarborough, but failed to turn up to be sentenced. | :39:40. | :39:41.
Heaton has a Mancunian accent and links across the city, | :39:42. | :39:44.
in particular to Failsworth, Moston and Cheetham Hill areas. | :39:45. | :39:51.
Next is Gbenga Ajibade - although he calls himself all sorts | :39:52. | :39:54.
of different names including Oluwagbenga Olanrewaju. | :39:55. | :40:00.
He was arrested in connection with a series of high value fraud | :40:01. | :40:03.
offences targeting bank and mobile phone customers. | :40:04. | :40:06.
He was released on police bail but has hasn't returned | :40:07. | :40:08.
Ajibade is five foot five inches tall, originally from Nigeria | :40:09. | :40:12.
and has links to East London, Kent and Birmingham. | :40:13. | :40:17.
Finally, we have Raja Majid Ali, although he too uses numerous | :40:18. | :40:20.
different names including Malik Amir, Mitara Bayal, | :40:21. | :40:24.
Detectives would like to question him in connection to a series | :40:25. | :40:30.
of thefts from different employers at newsagents and convenience | :40:31. | :40:32.
Ali is 35 and has friends in Essex, North Yorkshire and Hertfordshire. | :40:33. | :40:41.
If you know where any of these faces are, make sure you get in touch | :40:42. | :40:44.
I'm joined again by Detective Inspector Trevor Borley. | :40:45. | :40:53.
Earlier, we were at the scene of an armed robbery | :40:54. | :40:55.
Now detectives have found the next vital clue... | :40:56. | :40:58.
Yes, potentially, we have the getaway car. What are we looking | :40:59. | :41:09.
for? We are conducting a frantic investigation to try to link this | :41:10. | :41:12.
vehicle to the crime scene and also the bar and potentially the suspects | :41:13. | :41:17.
involved. Again, we have got the detectives and scenes of crime | :41:18. | :41:20.
officers. What is the decision-making process they go | :41:21. | :41:23.
through at the moment? I've already had a consultation with the scenes | :41:24. | :41:27.
of crime officer here. We have photographed the vehicle and now we | :41:28. | :41:30.
are systematically searching it for forensic evidence. We are looking | :41:31. | :41:34.
for things like fingerprints, of course, DNA, tapings from peoples | :41:35. | :41:39.
clothing which may link us to a suspect and back to the bar. We want | :41:40. | :41:44.
to join ripping up. That is what they are swapping? Yes, looking at | :41:45. | :41:49.
the passenger window, this appears to be blood-soaked DNA evidence | :41:50. | :41:52.
being recovered at the moment. How important is it to link the evidence | :41:53. | :41:57.
you find in this god what we found earlier in the bar? Absently crucial | :41:58. | :42:00.
for a successful prosecution, we need to everything up to get it to | :42:01. | :42:05.
the stage where we take it to court. A key piece of evidence we have | :42:06. | :42:09.
found, one of the guys picking it up. It appears to be a firearm, | :42:10. | :42:14.
which we hope to link to the shell casing we found in the bar earlier. | :42:15. | :42:18.
We can send that after the Forensic Science Service, the laboratory, to | :42:19. | :42:22.
establish if it is the same weapon that was used. A potentially | :42:23. | :42:27.
successful investigation. Yes. I hear that the Met are looking for | :42:28. | :42:32.
new detectives. We have an innovative new skin, asking people | :42:33. | :42:35.
to join a Metropolitan Police directly as a detective. You can go | :42:36. | :42:38.
onto the website and apply. We are looking for people with the right | :42:39. | :42:43.
skills and abilities and particularly an investigative | :42:44. | :42:46.
mindset to join a Metropolitan Police. Thank you for joining us. | :42:47. | :42:49.
You never know, potentially a second career for me! | :42:50. | :42:50.
You would be great! Time now for a look at what's been | :42:51. | :42:54.
coming in on the calls, A number already coming in on the | :42:55. | :43:00.
Christine Menzies case, the teenager who was found murdered in Germany 24 | :43:01. | :43:04.
years ago today. Keep those calls coming in. And you may remedy | :43:05. | :43:08.
yesterday we appealed for your help after the mugging of 77-year-old | :43:09. | :43:11.
steam rustling Crystal Palace, many of you phoning in with messages of | :43:12. | :43:15.
support but police still need to identify the man caught on CCTV. If | :43:16. | :43:19.
you recognise him, get in touch. Where will we be tomorrow? | :43:20. | :43:25.
Rav, I'll be back in Gravesend where the Met train their riot police. | :43:26. | :43:28.
I was there last year and you might remember it took my breath away! | :43:29. | :43:33.
I've got between now and tomorrow morning to get prepared again. I | :43:34. | :43:39.
will see you tomorrow! Good luck with that. I'm sure you | :43:40. | :43:40.
will be brilliant. For more details about the crimes | :43:41. | :43:43.
on today's programme, Finally, here's another look at this | :43:44. | :43:46.
morning's Wanted Faces. If any of them look familiar, | :43:47. | :43:50.
pick up the phone and tell We'll be back tomorrow morning, | :43:51. | :43:54.
but until then, take care. | :43:55. | :43:57. |
