Welcome to The Repair Shop,

0:00:020:00:03

where cherished family heirlooms are brought back to life.

0:00:030:00:06

Anything could happen. This is the workshop of dreams.

0:00:060:00:09

Home to furniture restorer Jay Blades.

0:00:090:00:12

Nowadays things are not built to last,

0:00:120:00:14

so we've become part of this throwaway culture.

0:00:140:00:16

It's all about preserving and restoring.

0:00:160:00:19

We bring the old back to new.

0:00:190:00:22

Working alongside Jay will be some

0:00:220:00:24

of the country's leading craftspeople...

0:00:240:00:27

I like making things with my hands.

0:00:270:00:28

I love to see how things work, and I want to know how things work.

0:00:280:00:32

Whether it's a Rembrandt, or somebody's family piece,

0:00:320:00:35

every painting deserves the same.

0:00:350:00:37

..each bringing their own unique set of skills.

0:00:370:00:41

You're about to witness some magic!

0:00:410:00:43

They will resurrect...

0:00:430:00:44

-..revive...

-Oh, yes!

0:00:450:00:47

..and rejuvenate treasured possessions

0:00:470:00:51

and irreplaceable pieces of family history...

0:00:510:00:55

Oh, my goodness me! It looks like it's new!

0:00:550:00:58

..bringing both the objects...

0:00:580:01:00

-Oh, wow!

-..and the memories that they hold back to life.

0:01:010:01:06

Oh, thank you.

0:01:060:01:07

In The Repair Shop today...

0:01:140:01:16

for clock specialist Steve, it's a round of applause...

0:01:160:01:19

Oh, my goodness!

0:01:200:01:22

..as he turns his hand to toy repair.

0:01:220:01:24

And there's a box of delights for ceramics conservator Kirsten...

0:01:260:01:30

-Careful on the ceramics...

-Yeah.

0:01:300:01:32

..with a little help from woodwork wunderkind Will.

0:01:320:01:36

Whoa, yay!

0:01:360:01:37

Well done.

0:01:390:01:40

The Repair Shop team is no stranger to weird and wonderful items.

0:01:470:01:51

Just come round this way...

0:01:510:01:53

And today is no exception.

0:01:530:01:55

And then over around there.

0:01:550:01:57

-That's it. Just there.

-Right there?

0:02:000:02:02

Right here.

0:02:020:02:04

Thank you.

0:02:040:02:06

This iconic blast from the past is owned by Mike Pearce,

0:02:060:02:10

who has come to see Jay and jukebox expert Laurence Richardson.

0:02:100:02:14

-Hello, how we doing?

-Morning.

-You all right?

-Yes, thank you, and you?

0:02:140:02:17

Yeah, not too bad. How can we help you?

0:02:170:02:19

-My jukebox has been delivered.

-Oh, it's YOUR jukebox?

0:02:190:02:21

-Yes, it is.

-OK, come round this way...

0:02:210:02:23

-Thank you.

-I think this is the one.

0:02:230:02:25

So how long have you had this one, then?

0:02:280:02:29

Getting on 30 years.

0:02:290:02:31

30 years? How did you get hold of it? Was it in a coffee shop

0:02:310:02:34

or something, or has it come over for America?

0:02:340:02:36

No, I've always loved them in coffee shops.

0:02:360:02:38

I wanted to buy a pinball machine which I had seen advertised.

0:02:380:02:40

-Oh, right?

-When I went to the gentleman's house,

0:02:400:02:43

this was standing in the corner.

0:02:430:02:45

So in the coffee shops, there would have been a lot of these...

0:02:450:02:47

-Yes.

-Every coffee shop had one.

-In those days, we didn't go to clubs,

0:02:470:02:50

there's no such thing as that.

0:02:500:02:51

We all thought we were James Dean...

0:02:510:02:53

-Oh, right!

-We used to lean on it and see what the reaction was with

0:02:530:02:58

the other people. And if the prettiest girl in the coffee bar

0:02:580:03:01

-was... Like this. So that's when you play that one again!

-Oh, OK!

0:03:010:03:05

This is my glorious 1957 Wurlitzer 2104 jukebox.

0:03:100:03:15

Unfortunately, like me, it's getting old and it's deteriorating,

0:03:150:03:19

and it gradually ground to a halt.

0:03:190:03:21

You have to remember with a jukebox, you've got these enormous speakers,

0:03:210:03:25

so they reverberate. They become part of the room.

0:03:250:03:28

It bounces off the walls.

0:03:280:03:29

Anyone of my age remembers music, this is how you would listen to it.

0:03:290:03:34

It doesn't sound the same from a CD or an iPod or anything.

0:03:340:03:37

It's not the same sound. It's a dear old friend.

0:03:370:03:40

I love it passionately. And it's so sad to see something

0:03:400:03:43

which should give so much pleasure just sulking in a corner,

0:03:430:03:47

poor thing.

0:03:470:03:48

-So, Laurence, what do you reckon?

-Yeah.

-Can it be done?

0:03:500:03:53

-Can we get this playing again?

-Hopefully.

0:03:530:03:54

Have you worked on anything like this before?

0:03:540:03:56

I have worked on a few of these.

0:03:560:03:57

So, how often do these need a service?

0:03:570:03:59

Really, they need a service every year.

0:03:590:04:01

-Every year?

-But most people leave it a couple of years.

0:04:010:04:03

And you've had this for 30... You've had it for 30 years!

0:04:030:04:07

If you leave it with us, we'll get it fully restored and working.

0:04:070:04:11

Lights flashing, yeah?

0:04:110:04:14

Yeah. To see it playing again, that would make an old man very happy.

0:04:140:04:17

-Miraculous. Thank you very much indeed.

-No problem.

-Thank you.

0:04:170:04:21

If it IS restored, it would be the most wonderful achievement.

0:04:260:04:30

Once it comes to life with music and light, it would be sensational.

0:04:300:04:34

-What have you got to do?

-Well, open it up, have a look at it,

0:04:340:04:38

and then power it up and... keep your fingers crossed!

0:04:380:04:40

Power it up!

0:04:400:04:42

Yes, just to assess what's wrong.

0:04:420:04:44

Have you ever had any problems with these before?

0:04:440:04:46

-Yeah, you get problems, but...

-Yeah?

-I don't let them beat me!

0:04:460:04:49

Wurlitzer jukeboxes energised young people across Britain

0:04:510:04:55

during the late 1940s and '50s.

0:04:550:04:58

Excited teenagers could select from up to 104 tunes,

0:04:590:05:03

transporting them into the world of American rock and roll.

0:05:030:05:07

ELECTRICAL BUZZING

0:05:110:05:14

No. It shouldn't be making that buzzing noise.

0:05:140:05:16

As soon as I press a letter and a number button,

0:05:160:05:19

it should select the mechanism and it should start spinning round.

0:05:190:05:24

I'm going to manually flick a pin up,

0:05:240:05:27

which is what the buttons do electronically.

0:05:270:05:30

That will tell me whether the mechanism is functioning,

0:05:300:05:33

whether this motor works.

0:05:330:05:35

OK, it's going, but very slowly.

0:05:390:05:41

The speed is telling me that the motor isn't functioning correctly.

0:05:410:05:44

The motor feels a bit stiff,

0:05:440:05:46

so I'd like to take it off and clean it as well.

0:05:460:05:48

And then we need to see what it sounds like.

0:05:480:05:52

But that's a while off at the moment.

0:05:520:05:54

For craftspeople like Laurence, Jay, and the rest of the team,

0:06:060:06:10

it's a pleasure to get their hands on these little pieces of history.

0:06:100:06:13

They may arrive showing their years,

0:06:150:06:18

but they leave with a new lease of life,

0:06:180:06:20

to be enjoyed for generations to come.

0:06:200:06:23

The next guests are keen to restore their precious piece back to

0:06:230:06:27

its former glory. Mary and David Shockley, and Freddie, the dog,

0:06:270:06:31

-from Wiltshire.

-How are we doing?

0:06:310:06:33

-Oh, fine, thank you.

-Hello.

0:06:330:06:35

It's a job for ceramics conservator Kirsten.

0:06:350:06:39

That's great, lovely.

0:06:390:06:41

Oh, my goodness! Look at that.

0:06:410:06:43

What have we got here. What can you tell me about this, please?

0:06:450:06:48

Well, as far as I know, it was a ladies' Victorian travelling box.

0:06:480:06:54

It was given to me when I was about 10 or 11 years old.

0:06:540:06:57

-Yeah?

-I understand that the panels on the front are hand-painted

0:06:570:07:03

French panels, which is quite unusual.

0:07:030:07:06

Because apparently, they usually just come with wooden fronts.

0:07:060:07:12

Oh, right. They're rather beautiful, actually, aren't they?

0:07:120:07:14

Beautifully painted.

0:07:140:07:16

Lovely colours. Has it always had that crack down...?

0:07:160:07:19

-Yes.

-It has.

-It had it when I had it.

0:07:190:07:21

Right. I can certainly have a look at that for you.

0:07:210:07:25

That would be absolutely marvellous!

0:07:250:07:27

-OK, all right.

-Thank you.

0:07:270:07:29

It hasn't been out of my sight for the 60 years

0:07:340:07:39

that I've had it!

0:07:390:07:40

So leaving it somewhere is quite a wrench!

0:07:400:07:44

Will?

0:07:460:07:47

-How can I help?

-These apparently are, um, French painted panels.

0:07:470:07:54

It's going to make my life a lot easier if it could come out of here.

0:07:540:07:58

-What do you think?

-Right... Hmm.

0:07:580:08:01

Well done.

0:08:080:08:10

The painted tile is already cracked in two.

0:08:100:08:13

-Careful on the ceramics.

-Yep.

0:08:130:08:15

It's up to Will to remove it without causing any further damage.

0:08:150:08:19

Whoa, yay!

0:08:190:08:22

Well done.

0:08:220:08:23

OK, so I'm just going to stick this final piece on here.

0:08:280:08:32

I tipped it onto its side,

0:08:320:08:35

to...use gravity to help pull the two edges together.

0:08:350:08:39

It should go together really nicely.

0:08:410:08:44

There we are. So, I'm just going to leave that now...

0:08:470:08:51

to go off.

0:08:510:08:52

From treasure box to jukebox.

0:09:060:09:09

Laurence is trying to resurrect Mike's classic 1950s Wurlitzer,

0:09:090:09:13

whose innards have remained untouched for three decades.

0:09:130:09:17

I've taken the motor off,

0:09:170:09:18

and it's really difficult to turn the spindle,

0:09:180:09:21

which is this piece at the end.

0:09:210:09:23

That tells me that it's seized up inside.

0:09:230:09:26

It should be nice and free, it definitely needs to be cleaned

0:09:290:09:33

and be lubricated.

0:09:330:09:34

-Oh, that's nice, isn't it?

-Yeah, good, Jay.

0:09:360:09:38

-Yeah, we're getting there.

-Got the back open?

0:09:380:09:40

-Got the back open.

-Have you got it working?

-No, not yet.

-Not yet!

0:09:400:09:44

So, what's the problem with it?

0:09:440:09:45

Well, the motor is definitely very slow...

0:09:450:09:48

-OK.

-So I've taken it apart.

-What's that part?

-That's the transformer.

0:09:480:09:51

-That's power, then?

-That's power.

0:09:510:09:53

And then that's the mechanism?

0:09:530:09:55

This is the brain, if you like.

0:09:550:09:57

-This part.

-Right, OK.

-And it's not getting the signal from the button.

0:09:570:10:00

When you press the buttons, it's just buzzing.

0:10:000:10:02

It should click a pin up to make it rotate to select the record,

0:10:020:10:06

-and it's not doing that.

-I want to get this going, man.

0:10:060:10:09

-Yeah, OK, OK!

-Are you going to do it, are you going to do it?

0:10:090:10:11

-Yeah, I'll do it.

-All right, I'm not going to stand over you

0:10:110:10:13

cos that's the worst thing. Put too much pressure on you.

0:10:130:10:16

-You're in control, ain't you?

-I'm in control.

0:10:160:10:18

ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC

0:10:180:10:20

So, we've given this a clean-up.

0:10:260:10:28

And it's running much freer now.

0:10:310:10:36

Should be fine to go back in.

0:10:360:10:37

I love restoring jukeboxes

0:10:380:10:40

because there's something different to do every day,

0:10:400:10:43

and there's real satisfaction when you've restored something that

0:10:430:10:48

most people think looks ready for the tip.

0:10:480:10:50

The end result's just stunning.

0:10:520:10:55

Now I'm going to put the amplifier and power supply

0:10:570:11:00

back into the jukebox.

0:11:000:11:01

Hopefully, it will have speeded up the motor, the drive motor,

0:11:010:11:05

so it functions properly.

0:11:050:11:07

It's made a clunk...

0:11:090:11:11

Yup, the carousel's turning much faster now.

0:11:120:11:14

So it should stop when it gets to this pin.

0:11:160:11:20

It should lift the record up.

0:11:230:11:25

Which it's doing...

0:11:250:11:27

ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC PLAYS

0:11:270:11:30

Now the Wurlitzer is starting to get its mojo back,

0:11:380:11:41

Laurence gives it a well-earned drink.

0:11:410:11:44

Right, it's time to get the button bank out now.

0:11:480:11:51

This 1957 Wurlitzer 2104 is one of the most collectable from the era.

0:11:510:11:57

Fully working models can change hands for several thousand pounds.

0:11:570:12:02

All of the contacts look really dirty.

0:12:020:12:05

I'm going to completely clean everything there,

0:12:050:12:07

and then hopefully the signal will go through

0:12:070:12:09

when you press the buttons to start the jukebox working.

0:12:090:12:12

Right, I'm putting the button bank back in.

0:12:160:12:19

MUSIC: Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller

0:12:240:12:27

-MUSIC SLOWS TO A HALT

-Ooh.

0:12:350:12:38

Put an end to THAT party, didn't it?

0:12:380:12:39

It sounds all right. Like, everything is rocking and rolling.

0:12:390:12:42

Yeah, it's selecting really well.

0:12:420:12:44

-But you don't look happy.

-No, well... I am happy.

0:12:440:12:47

-What's left?

-I think the sound could be a bit better, so...

0:12:470:12:49

I think that needle's worn out.

0:12:490:12:51

I don't think that's been changed for a while.

0:12:510:12:53

So that will make it sound good?

0:12:530:12:54

Mike's going to come in and lose his mind! It'll take him right back.

0:12:540:12:57

He's going to have the leather jacket on, the quiff. So basically,

0:12:570:12:59

we've got to get this sorted.

0:12:590:13:01

What else have you got left to do? Cos he's coming today,

0:13:010:13:03

-he's got to pick this up.

-Is he?

-Yeah, he is!

0:13:030:13:05

We need to give it a good clean. The screen's really dirty.

0:13:050:13:08

I could take care of that. Once you let me know when I can...

0:13:080:13:11

He's going to be made up, Mike's going to be made up.

0:13:110:13:13

-But listen, we've got to get this going.

-Yeah, we will.

-Call me!

0:13:130:13:16

-Right, OK. Thanks, Jay.

-No problem!

0:13:160:13:19

No challenge is too big...

0:13:280:13:30

..or too small for the expertise and experience of the Repair Shop team.

0:13:320:13:37

Yet the objects that arrive...

0:13:370:13:39

-Ooh!

-Oh, yes!

0:13:390:13:42

..still have the capacity to surprise and delight.

0:13:420:13:45

Oh, wow!

0:13:450:13:46

And none more so than the next offering,

0:13:470:13:49

brought by Peter Veal from south-east London.

0:13:490:13:53

-Hello.

-Hi, there.

-What have you got in there, then?

0:13:530:13:56

-So, we have a monkey.

-A monkey?

-Not a real monkey.

0:13:560:13:58

-Not a real monkey...

-No.

0:13:580:14:00

What we've got is a toy monkey.

0:14:000:14:02

I spent quite a few summer holidays

0:14:020:14:05

in Montrose in Scotland with my best friend, James, and his grandmother,

0:14:050:14:09

who was an amazing woman. She'd lived all over the world,

0:14:090:14:12

and when she died, I was asked,

0:14:120:14:13

"Would you like anything to remember her by?"

0:14:130:14:15

-Right.

-And the monkey, to be honest,

0:14:150:14:17

was the only thing I remember from this amazing room full of toys!

0:14:170:14:20

The first time I saw it, it actually moved, it's supposed to work.

0:14:200:14:24

But since I inherited it, and I think that was in '91,

0:14:240:14:26

-it's not moved a muscle.

-It's not moved, no?

-No.

0:14:260:14:29

This slightly scary simian was produced by Japanese toymakers

0:14:310:14:36

Bandai in the 1950s, which makes him between 60 and 70 years old.

0:14:360:14:41

-How do you operate it?

-You just

0:14:410:14:43

press the lever and it moves its face, and it claps the cymbals.

0:14:430:14:48

So all of this moves up and down?

0:14:480:14:50

You can kind of re-enact it by doing...

0:14:500:14:52

-what you're doing there.

-Right.

0:14:520:14:53

It can be terrifying for young children...

0:14:530:14:55

-Yeah, I bet it is!

-I have a big print of it in my house,

0:14:550:14:58

and my niece came to stay at Christmas and she said,

0:14:580:15:01

"Can I have another room?"

0:15:010:15:03

We had to remove the picture from the wall.

0:15:030:15:05

I've done a lot of toys, I haven't done one of these, so...

0:15:050:15:08

His name is Mungo, by the way.

0:15:080:15:09

-Mungo the monkey, I don't know why.

-Mungo the monkey?

0:15:090:15:11

How fast do these go when they're...

0:15:110:15:13

-When it is working?

-I don't remember the speed!

0:15:130:15:16

What do you want, hertz or per second, what do you want(?)

0:15:160:15:19

I wondered whether it just goes like this or whether it goes like that.

0:15:190:15:23

-Yeah, the faster of the two.

-The faster? All right.

0:15:230:15:26

Well, I think this is a job for you, Jay.

0:15:260:15:29

-Is it?

-Taking off the clothes...

0:15:290:15:31

Steady on! Taking off the clothes of a monkey!?

0:15:310:15:33

-Yeah.

-Yeah, because we've got to stitch them back, haven't we?

0:15:330:15:36

-No, that one's glued.

-It is glued.

-If you leave it with us,

0:15:360:15:38

we'll definitely get back to you once we've got him working again.

0:15:380:15:42

-OK.

-Is that all right?

-All right.

-Thanks very much. Thank you.

0:15:420:15:45

-Thank you.

-All right.

-Thank you very much. Thanks a lot.

0:15:450:15:47

Well, Mungo's in quite a sorry state, to be honest.

0:15:510:15:54

He's looking worse for wear.

0:15:540:15:55

He's aged worse than me, I'm happy to say!

0:15:550:15:58

So if he could look almost as good as new, um, that would be amazing.

0:15:580:16:04

So, I've got to take this to my bench, get the clothes off...

0:16:040:16:07

-OK, all right.

-I'll see you in a bit.

0:16:070:16:09

This is what it must feel like to get your chest waxed.

0:16:160:16:20

Almost there.

0:16:200:16:21

I think we've got lift-off!

0:16:210:16:23

He was resisting. He hasn't had his clothes off in many years!

0:16:250:16:28

Oh, was he?

0:16:280:16:30

-I suppose he hasn't!

-And he could feel the chill in this building.

0:16:300:16:33

-Yeah.

-And then...

0:16:330:16:35

-Well done, you!

-See, if you can get...

0:16:350:16:38

-I can't get this off.

-No, I don't think you need to.

0:16:380:16:40

I think the less we have to take off, the better.

0:16:400:16:43

So the shoulders... I think this whole back bit just comes out,

0:16:430:16:45

-doesn't it?

-Yeah, no. It does. Yeah, no, that's perfect. Thank you.

0:16:450:16:48

-Leave that with me.

-Yeah.

-And...

-You'll get him working, yeah?

0:16:480:16:51

-All right!

-Hey, hey!

-What's that?

-Bye!

0:16:510:16:55

There you go. See you later, mate!

0:16:550:16:57

While Steve gets to grips with Mungo,

0:16:570:17:00

the jukebox is almost ready to return to active service,

0:17:000:17:03

complete with new needle and working lights.

0:17:030:17:07

For the final touches,

0:17:070:17:09

Laurence is calling in some Repair Shop reinforcements...

0:17:090:17:12

Right, Jay? Can we get these windows clean?

0:17:130:17:16

-How dirty are they?

-They are filthy, mate!

0:17:160:17:18

They are, aren't they?

0:17:180:17:20

-It's had a hard life.

-A hard life!

0:17:200:17:22

That's good stuff.

0:17:240:17:25

Yeah, it bit of vinegar, don't go amiss with that...

0:17:250:17:28

-IN AMERICAN ACCENT:

-Gary, come and have a look at this!

0:17:280:17:31

-Unbelievable.

-Put on my favourite song!

0:17:310:17:33

Aw, it stinks!

0:17:330:17:35

-Is that vinegar?

-Yeah.

0:17:350:17:37

Ugh! Come on, guys, I want to listen to music.

0:17:370:17:39

ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC PLAYS

0:17:390:17:42

With the Wurlitzer sparkling once again,

0:17:420:17:45

Mike is back to be reunited with this most-treasured piece

0:17:450:17:49

of musical memorabilia.

0:17:490:17:50

Hearing the music coming out of my Wurlitzer again would take me

0:17:500:17:54

straight back to the 1950s.

0:17:540:17:56

The sounds will be the same, it would look the same.

0:17:560:18:00

And the feeling will be the same.

0:18:000:18:02

-Thanks, mate.

-Right!

0:18:070:18:10

-There he is. How we doing, Mike?

-Hello again, Jay.

-You all right?

0:18:110:18:14

-I'm good, thank you.

-OK, are you ready for this?

0:18:140:18:18

Laurence is smiling, that's good enough for me!

0:18:180:18:20

Yeah? Here we go, here we go.

0:18:200:18:22

Oh, that is beautiful!

0:18:230:18:25

Isn't that the most beautiful thing?

0:18:250:18:27

Laurence, you're a star, thank you so much - and thank you, Jay.

0:18:270:18:30

-It's amazing what he's done on this.

-Never looked this good before...

0:18:300:18:33

-No?

-Nope. That is wonderful.

0:18:330:18:36

So, does it take you back to the coffee shop days?

0:18:360:18:38

Sorry, that's where I WAS!

0:18:380:18:39

Oh, is it? I should leave you there, we should go, then!

0:18:390:18:42

Yeah, exactly.

0:18:420:18:45

She's exactly as they should look.

0:18:450:18:47

Yeah? I tell you what the best thing to do now is play a song.

0:18:470:18:50

That's the first time for a few years too.

0:18:540:18:57

Here comes the magic bit...

0:18:570:18:59

MUSIC: At The Hop by Danny And The Juniors

0:19:030:19:06

That sounds good!

0:19:060:19:08

Is that all right?

0:19:080:19:10

'The sound, something else with the giant speakers,

0:19:120:19:15

'took me straight back to the '50s, the coffee bar days.'

0:19:150:19:19

And we'd play all the early rock and roll records.

0:19:190:19:23

Wonderful sensation.

0:19:230:19:24

It looks so beautiful, that it can't have looked that good since 1957!

0:19:270:19:32

So, Mike, are you happy with the job that Laurence has done?

0:19:360:19:39

-I know he's standing there!

-Happy's not the word. I'm ecstatic about it!

0:19:390:19:43

It is absolutely wonderful.

0:19:430:19:44

No, I didn't expect it to come up as well as this.

0:19:440:19:47

I'm pleased with it.

0:19:470:19:48

Honestly, it just looks so nice, sounds so nice, and it looks right.

0:19:480:19:51

That's the important thing. And it feels good, too.

0:19:510:19:54

-Yeah, it does.

-You're an absolute star, thank you so much.

0:19:540:19:58

-That's OK.

-Press a number...

0:19:580:20:00

-It's very clever.

-It's very clever!

0:20:030:20:05

MUSIC: Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller

0:20:050:20:09

Laurence and Jay have done the most spectacular job on it.

0:20:150:20:18

It's beyond my expectations, for sure.

0:20:180:20:20

It is back to how it should be - it's living, it's breathing,

0:20:200:20:23

it's a real thing again.

0:20:230:20:25

It will be cherished and be given the future that it deserves.

0:20:250:20:28

But The Repair Shop can't stop to party for too long.

0:20:330:20:37

Steve's got monkey business to attend to.

0:20:370:20:39

Most clockmakers do repairs to all sorts of things,

0:20:410:20:44

because we're sort of the last resort in a lot of cases,

0:20:440:20:47

so we get a lot of mechanical toys to mend, especially vintage ones.

0:20:470:20:52

This happy chappie has been popping up in popular culture

0:20:520:20:56

since it was first manufactured in the 1950s,

0:20:560:20:59

making appearances in Rebel Without A Cause, Toy Story 3,

0:20:590:21:03

and even The Simpsons.

0:21:030:21:05

The clapping monkey has become an enduring childhood image.

0:21:050:21:09

I'm following the wires around, to check to see where they are, and...

0:21:090:21:14

..I've actually identified a loose wire just here.

0:21:160:21:19

Ooh!

0:21:210:21:22

Oh, brilliant, we've got life there!

0:21:250:21:28

-Oh, my goodness!

-HE LAUGHS

0:21:340:21:36

You got him working, then?

0:21:360:21:38

Well, I'm holding a wire in place at the moment.

0:21:380:21:41

-He's a mad little monkey, isn't he?

-He is.

0:21:410:21:44

What are you holding together, just a bit of wiring?

0:21:440:21:46

I've got this wire that's loose in there - can you see this wire here?

0:21:460:21:50

-There we go.

-Oh, as soon as it touches that, yeah?

0:21:500:21:53

Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, it's all right.

0:21:530:21:56

And then you've got to solder in there, but how you going to do that,

0:21:560:21:59

-without getting this...?

-I just, I'll just...

0:21:590:22:02

I've got to move that out of the way, so I don't burn it or melt it.

0:22:020:22:04

-And that's it?

-Well, no.

0:22:040:22:06

Then, then there's this lever, this little button on top,

0:22:060:22:10

-that's then supposed to...

-What, on his head?

0:22:100:22:12

Yeah.

0:22:120:22:13

-Oh, wow.

-That then changes its action.

0:22:130:22:17

I think - and I don't know this - I think it stops the cymbals

0:22:170:22:21

and then it makes a noise and its lips go up and down

0:22:210:22:25

and eyes go in and out and things like that.

0:22:250:22:26

-Is it?

-So, yeah, watch this space.

-OK.

0:22:260:22:30

There's this button on top here.

0:22:400:22:42

I was hoping that this would actually engage

0:22:420:22:46

the mechanism to alter the...

0:22:460:22:50

eyes and the lips.

0:22:500:22:53

The lips are supposed to open like this,

0:22:530:22:55

and the eyes are supposed to bulge out.

0:22:550:22:58

And I think it's had quite a bash in its past.

0:22:580:23:03

There are levers really bent and broken in here,

0:23:030:23:08

but I'll have a look at it and see what I can do.

0:23:080:23:11

While Steve goes like the clappers to bring Mungo back to life,

0:23:130:23:17

Kirsten is applying some blue-sky thinking to the treasure box.

0:23:170:23:21

So, I'm just sort of finishing off this plaque from the treasure chest.

0:23:210:23:27

I'm hoping that it's going to look really, really nice

0:23:290:23:31

and that the owners will be very happy with it.

0:23:310:23:34

All that remains is for Will to carefully reattach the door

0:23:410:23:45

and Mary, along with her husband, David,

0:23:450:23:47

can be reunited with the box she has loved since she was ten years old.

0:23:470:23:52

-How we doing?

-Very well, thank you.

0:23:520:23:54

With Kirsten off on a Repair Shop mission,

0:23:540:23:57

it's over to Jay to do the honours.

0:23:570:23:59

-You ready for this?

-I am.

0:23:590:24:02

-Wow.

-Oh gosh, that's beautiful.

0:24:040:24:07

Hasn't she done a lovely job?

0:24:070:24:09

Brilliant! You can't see the mend at all.

0:24:090:24:12

Oh, it's absolutely brilliant, and it's come up beautifully.

0:24:120:24:15

My mother would be thrilled to see it like that, as well.

0:24:150:24:19

And I hope to pass it down the generations.

0:24:190:24:21

-That's good.

-Because I've got a daughter and a granddaughter,

0:24:210:24:24

-which would be lovely.

-Yeah, that would be.

0:24:240:24:26

It's absolutely fantastic.

0:24:260:24:28

-Yeah?

-Yes, I can't thank you enough for doing it.

0:24:280:24:33

'I couldn't believe my eyes.'

0:24:360:24:38

That crack has been there ever since I owned it,

0:24:380:24:41

and to see it gone is absolutely marvellous.

0:24:410:24:46

It makes it so much more complete.

0:24:460:24:49

The treasure box is going to be kept now in the lounge and not

0:24:510:24:55

in a wardrobe in my bedroom, and put it on display,

0:24:550:24:59

so that everybody can admire it.

0:24:590:25:01

If there's one project in The Repair Shop that's in danger of driving

0:25:050:25:09

everyone bananas...

0:25:090:25:10

..it's this one, Mungo the musical monkey.

0:25:120:25:16

-All right, Jay?

-How you doing, Steve?

0:25:240:25:26

Yeah, he's ready to... He's ready to be redressed.

0:25:260:25:30

-Redressed!

-Yes.

-OK, let's have a look.

0:25:300:25:33

He ain't been to the dentist for a long time, though, has he?

0:25:340:25:37

-He hasn't been to the dentist for a while.

-You sorted him out.

0:25:370:25:39

-He could do with a gold tooth in there.

-He could, actually.

0:25:390:25:41

I might have to put one in there for him!

0:25:410:25:44

I'm not an expert at dressing a monkey, so I'll leave that to you!

0:25:450:25:49

Yes, please!

0:25:490:25:51

Cheers, Steve.

0:25:520:25:54

Steve's done a brilliant job in getting Mungo working again,

0:25:580:26:03

so the only thing that's left for me to do is basically glue him

0:26:030:26:08

so he doesn't stretch his fur.

0:26:080:26:11

There we go, Steve, one fully dressed monkey.

0:26:170:26:20

He's got his dignity back, then.

0:26:200:26:21

He has a bit, he has.

0:26:210:26:23

-Waah!

-I know, the batteries are in!

0:26:230:26:27

Turn him off, mate, turn him off!

0:26:290:26:31

-He's a bit scary.

-Yeah, you've done a great job there, well done.

0:26:310:26:35

Restored and re-dressed...

0:26:360:26:39

-How we doing?

-Hello again.

0:26:390:26:40

..Mungo can be returned to owner Peter.

0:26:400:26:43

-Hello, Peter, how are you?

-All right, you?

0:26:430:26:45

A reminder of childhood memories of holidays in Scotland,

0:26:450:26:48

with his best friend and his grandmother.

0:26:480:26:51

There we go, all tucked up nicely.

0:26:510:26:53

How long is it since you saw him doing anything?

0:26:530:26:57

-Er... 1988, so what's that...?

-'88, oh, my word!

-29 years?

0:26:570:27:00

Gosh! Right, once upon a time he used to open and close its lips

0:27:000:27:06

and the eyes used to bulge out, and he used to make a noise, as well.

0:27:060:27:11

But at some stage in its life,

0:27:110:27:13

it's had a wallop or two or three, or maybe a lot more wallops on it,

0:27:130:27:18

and is beyond repair, really.

0:27:180:27:20

But what you remember happening is happening now.

0:27:200:27:24

Hey! He didn't go THAT fast!

0:27:240:27:27

Very good, thank you. I've never seen him twirl on his bum like that.

0:27:300:27:35

No.

0:27:350:27:36

-Well done.

-So, yeah, all good.

0:27:380:27:41

-May I?

-Yes, sir, absolutely you can, yeah.

0:27:410:27:43

I can't stop it...

0:27:490:27:50

Oh, it's exhausting!

0:27:500:27:53

-Thank you.

-To tell you the truth,

0:27:530:27:54

I'm quite chuffed that he's leaving the workshop.

0:27:540:27:57

I haven't had a good night's sleep since he's been here!

0:27:570:27:59

I'm feeling very happy,

0:28:010:28:02

because I honestly had given up on him

0:28:020:28:04

ever being a working monkey again.

0:28:040:28:07

It feels very nice that Mungo's been brought back to life,

0:28:070:28:10

because it connects me with the memories again

0:28:100:28:12

and I can't wait to show James, because I think that...

0:28:120:28:15

the memories will come flooding back for him, as well.

0:28:150:28:18

Join us next time, as more treasured possessions

0:28:220:28:25

are brought back to life.
