Welcome to the village of Portmeirion.

0:00:050:00:07

It is September 2015 and 10,000 people are here enjoying the sun,

0:00:070:00:11

the scenery and the sounds of the unique Festival No 6.

0:00:110:00:15

We are showcasing performances from some of the best unsigned artists

0:00:270:00:30

coming out of Wales.

0:00:300:00:32

The word is spreading about this event

0:00:400:00:43

and the list of musicians, comedians and writers gets longer each year.

0:00:430:00:47

We've been here in Portmeirion this sunny September weekend

0:00:470:00:50

filming some great live sessions from Horizons bands,

0:00:500:00:53

Welsh-based acts who write and perform their own music.

0:00:530:00:56

The Horizons project gives a platform to 12 upcoming acts

0:00:570:01:01

from across Wales.

0:01:010:01:03

So, let's start with the first of our Horizons artists who have been

0:01:030:01:06

playing to the festivalgoers just through here in the Village Green.

0:01:060:01:10

This is Cut Ribbons with Clouds.

0:01:130:01:16

# Hey

0:01:160:01:17

# Hey

0:01:210:01:22

# Hey

0:01:270:01:28

# Sewn in the seams

0:01:330:01:35

# Of my enemies

0:01:350:01:37

# When the skies are grey

0:01:370:01:40

# We won't make a sound

0:01:430:01:46

# As we blow the clouds

0:01:460:01:48

# And the cobwebs away

0:01:480:01:51

# Hey

0:01:530:01:54

# Your electric trance

0:01:540:01:56

# My electric prance

0:01:560:01:58

# We are the new undrenched

0:01:580:02:01

# We are the echo

0:02:030:02:06

# In the hands of a distant land

0:02:060:02:09

# Where we're crowned kings instead

0:02:090:02:11

# Saw all the colours with you

0:02:140:02:17

# Kaleidoscopes with a view

0:02:170:02:19

# Caught everything that you do

0:02:190:02:22

# Cos that's what lovers should do

0:02:220:02:25

# Saw all the colours with you

0:02:250:02:27

# Kaleidoscopes with a view

0:02:270:02:30

# Caught everything that you do

0:02:300:02:32

# Cos that's what lovers should do

0:02:320:02:35

# Hey

0:02:350:02:36

# Hey... #

0:02:400:02:42

Clouds is a track... It's really summery, isn't it?

0:02:450:02:49

It's very...

0:02:490:02:51

It's one of the first synth sounds that we did.

0:02:510:02:54

We recorded it in our studio back in Llanelli.

0:02:540:02:58

It's a bit of an exploration into where

0:02:580:03:01

we think the band is going, you know, that kind of direction,

0:03:010:03:04

that big synth lead and kind of soundscape.

0:03:040:03:07

# Two hands who know each other

0:03:070:03:10

# From under the cover... #

0:03:100:03:12

Everything is written with harmonies in mind.

0:03:120:03:14

Don't get me wrong, sometimes we split the vocals in verses

0:03:140:03:17

and things where Lluan will take some vocals then I'll take

0:03:170:03:20

the second half of the verse.

0:03:200:03:22

But really, everything is written with harmony in mind,

0:03:220:03:24

because that's kind of what we listen to a lot.

0:03:240:03:27

We listen to a lot of Fleetwood Mac and things and...trying to do it

0:03:270:03:31

in a different way. That's the ethos we're trying to convey, you know?

0:03:310:03:36

Without the turmoil!

0:03:360:03:38

# Saw all the colours with you

0:03:380:03:41

# Kaleidoscopes with a view

0:03:410:03:43

# Caught everything that you do

0:03:430:03:46

# Cos that's what lovers should do

0:03:460:03:49

# Saw all the colours with you

0:03:490:03:51

# Kaleidoscopes with a view

0:03:510:03:54

# Caught everything that you do

0:03:540:03:57

# Cos that's what lovers should do

0:03:570:03:59

# Saw all the colours with you

0:03:590:04:02

# Kaleidoscopes with a view

0:04:020:04:05

# Caught everything that you do

0:04:050:04:08

# Cos that's what lovers should do. #

0:04:080:04:10

Thank you.

0:04:100:04:11

Cut Ribbons were one of the 12 bands chosen at the start of 2015

0:04:130:04:17

to be Horizons artists.

0:04:170:04:20

The year started with a base camp in west Wales where the bands get

0:04:200:04:23

to meet each other for the first time.

0:04:230:04:26

They also hear from industry experts who give them

0:04:260:04:28

advice about playing live, touring, publicity, radio and social media.

0:04:280:04:33

So that's my job, to sort of forge a relationship with journalists.

0:04:330:04:37

So I have a very good idea of what those kind of people are into...

0:04:370:04:40

Horizons artists can be bands or solo performers,

0:04:400:04:44

singing in English or in Welsh.

0:04:440:04:46

Or both, just like our next performer,

0:04:460:04:48

singer-songwriter Aled Rheon.

0:04:480:04:50

# First there was pain

0:04:510:04:53

# It hurt a lot

0:04:540:04:56

# The pain was saved by the sight begot

0:04:570:05:03

# And there were screams

0:05:030:05:06

# And bated breath

0:05:060:05:07

# Smiles were smiled

0:05:090:05:10

# Clocks were set

0:05:120:05:13

# Breathe in, breathe...

0:05:190:05:21

# Out

0:05:220:05:24

# First she crawled

0:05:290:05:31

# Next she walked

0:05:320:05:34

# You run around all day

0:05:340:05:37

# Cover new ground in swathes and eat your greens

0:05:380:05:44

# Reach new heights

0:05:440:05:45

# Imagine a million worlds and jump inside

0:05:470:05:51

# Breathe in, breathe...

0:05:570:05:59

# Out

0:06:010:06:02

# Just remember to wrap up warm

0:06:020:06:05

# And don't forget your home

0:06:050:06:08

# And call me when you get there... #

0:06:080:06:10

It's called Wrap Up Warm.

0:06:160:06:18

It's a favourite of my mother's and it's about growing up.

0:06:180:06:20

It's quite an emotional song,

0:06:200:06:22

I guess it's a little bit based on my upbringing, I guess,

0:06:220:06:26

in a way, cos that's the only thing I could refer back to.

0:06:260:06:29

But it's mainly about, you know, the stages that people go through

0:06:290:06:32

when they're trying to find themselves as we grow up.

0:06:320:06:35

# Breathe in, breathe...

0:06:390:06:40

# Out

0:06:420:06:44

# Just remember to wrap up warm

0:06:440:06:47

# And don't forget your home

0:06:470:06:50

# And call me when you get there

0:06:500:06:52

# Just remember to wrap up warm

0:06:540:06:57

# And don't forget your home

0:06:570:06:59

# And call me when you get there

0:06:590:07:02

# Find your feet

0:07:070:07:09

# Or take flight

0:07:100:07:12

# It's a big world out there so take a bite

0:07:130:07:18

# Find the one

0:07:190:07:20

# Hold on tight

0:07:220:07:25

# Future's pulling

0:07:250:07:27

# Clocks are ticking

0:07:280:07:30

# Breathe in, breathe...

0:07:360:07:37

# Out

0:07:390:07:40

# Just remember to wrap up warm

0:07:400:07:43

# And don't forget your home

0:07:440:07:46

# And call me when you get there. #

0:07:470:07:50

This is Wales Unsigned, showcasing some of the best new Welsh music.

0:07:550:07:59

And next up on the Bandstand stage at Festival No 6, this is Violet Skies.

0:07:590:08:05

# Got blood on my hands

0:08:080:08:10

# And there's some on yours too

0:08:100:08:13

# Hmm

0:08:150:08:16

# Now we're in this together

0:08:190:08:22

# What are we going to do?

0:08:220:08:24

# Hmm

0:08:260:08:27

# I've learned from my mistakes

0:08:290:08:32

# And they hurt me every day

0:08:340:08:39

# And now you've done the same

0:08:410:08:44

# And there's a darker shade of grey

0:08:450:08:48

# A darker shade of grey

0:08:480:08:52

# You can't have her

0:08:520:08:55

# You should walk away

0:08:550:08:57

# Cos you can't keep me

0:08:570:09:00

# Any other way

0:09:000:09:03

# And you don't need her

0:09:030:09:06

# She is not the one

0:09:060:09:08

# Who will hold you

0:09:080:09:11

# When the lightning comes

0:09:110:09:13

# So when the lightning comes, baby

0:09:130:09:16

# And you're screaming out, "Save me"

0:09:160:09:19

# Remember that my soul is yours

0:09:190:09:22

# Remember that I love you more

0:09:220:09:24

# So when the lightning comes, baby

0:09:240:09:27

# And you're screaming out, "Save me"

0:09:270:09:30

# Remember that my soul is yours

0:09:300:09:33

# Remember that I love you more

0:09:330:09:38

# Can't sleep at night

0:09:390:09:42

# Well, honey, I can't either

0:09:420:09:44

# No, I can't either

0:09:440:09:47

# We've got to figure this out

0:09:500:09:53

# Before the dark gets deeper

0:09:530:09:56

# No, no

0:09:560:09:58

# No

0:09:580:10:01

# Can we shake off the shame?

0:10:010:10:04

# This darker shade of grey

0:10:060:10:08

# This darker shade of grey

0:10:080:10:12

# You can't have her

0:10:120:10:14

# You should walk away

0:10:140:10:17

# Cos you can't keep me

0:10:170:10:20

# Any other way

0:10:200:10:23

# And you don't need her

0:10:230:10:26

# She is not the one

0:10:260:10:28

# Who will hold you

0:10:280:10:31

# When the lightning comes

0:10:310:10:33

# So when the lightning comes, baby

0:10:330:10:36

# And you're screaming out, "Save me"

0:10:360:10:39

# Remember that my soul is yours

0:10:390:10:42

# Remember that I love you more

0:10:420:10:44

# So when the lightning comes, baby

0:10:440:10:47

# And you're screaming out, "Save me"

0:10:470:10:50

# Remember that my soul is yours

0:10:500:10:53

# Remember that I love

0:10:530:10:55

# Love is found when we are lost

0:10:550:10:58

# Fight for us at any cost

0:10:580:11:00

# The love is found when we are lost

0:11:000:11:03

# Will you fight for us now?

0:11:030:11:06

# Only love is found when we are lost

0:11:060:11:09

# Will you fight for us at any cost?

0:11:090:11:12

# Only love is found, love is found

0:11:120:11:17

# And the lightning comes, baby

0:11:180:11:21

# And you're screaming out, "Save me"

0:11:210:11:23

# Remember that my soul is yours

0:11:230:11:27

# Remember that I love you more. #

0:11:270:11:33

Thank you.

0:11:360:11:37

One of the nice things about a festival like this is there's

0:11:400:11:43

all sorts of areas and venues, each one with a different feel,

0:11:430:11:47

and you come across musical performances all across the site.

0:11:470:11:50

Our next performance is from Merthyr-based Horizons artist

0:11:500:11:54

Delyth McLean.

0:11:540:11:56

# You let me drown in your lies

0:11:580:12:04

# You saw me fall

0:12:060:12:09

# Right in front of your eyes

0:12:090:12:13

# You let me drown in your lies

0:12:140:12:20

# You gave me nowhere

0:12:220:12:26

# Nowhere to hide

0:12:260:12:30

# You could have saved me

0:12:300:12:33

# Saved me

0:12:330:12:35

# You could have saved

0:12:350:12:37

# Saved me

0:12:370:12:38

# You could have saved me

0:12:380:12:41

# Saved me

0:12:410:12:42

# You could have saved

0:12:420:12:46

# Cos these waves over my head

0:12:460:12:49

# Pushing me down, down, down to the riverbed

0:12:490:12:53

# Cos the waves over my head

0:12:530:12:57

# Pushing me down, down, down, down

0:12:570:13:01

# To the riverbed

0:13:010:13:05

# You let me drown in your lies

0:13:090:13:14

# You saw me fall

0:13:170:13:20

# Right in front of your eyes

0:13:200:13:24

# You broke every law inside

0:13:240:13:29

# You knew you were wrong

0:13:320:13:35

# But you put up a fight

0:13:350:13:40

# You could have saved me

0:13:400:13:42

# Saved me

0:13:420:13:44

# You could have saved

0:13:440:13:47

# Saved me

0:13:470:13:48

# You could have saved me

0:13:480:13:50

# Saved me

0:13:500:13:51

# You could have saved

0:13:510:13:55

# Cos these waves over my head

0:13:550:13:59

# Pushing me down, down, down to the riverbed

0:13:590:14:03

# These waves over my head

0:14:030:14:07

# Pushing me down, down, down, down

0:14:070:14:11

# To the riverbed

0:14:110:14:15

# A-a-a-ay

0:14:260:14:28

# A-a-a-a-ay

0:14:280:14:30

# A-a-a-ay

0:14:300:14:32

# A-a-a-a-ay

0:14:320:14:34

# Whoohoo

0:14:340:14:37

# Hoo, hoo, hoo

0:14:370:14:39

# Cos these waves over my head

0:14:420:14:45

# Pushing me down, down, down to the riverbed

0:14:450:14:49

# These waves over my head

0:14:490:14:53

# Pushing me down, down, down, down. #

0:14:530:14:57

Delyth McLean and band performing at Festival No 6

0:15:020:15:06

in Portmeirion in September 2015.

0:15:060:15:08

And you can see more from Delyth

0:15:080:15:10

and all the other Horizons artists on our website...

0:15:100:15:14

Our next unsigned Welsh band come from Aberystwyth.

0:15:210:15:24

This is Mellt.

0:15:240:15:26

There's an infectious sense of fun about their music

0:15:260:15:28

and they've appeared at the Eisteddfod,

0:15:280:15:30

in Machynlleth at the Comedy Festival

0:15:300:15:32

and of course here at Festival No 6.

0:15:320:15:35

This is Beth Yw Dy Stori, What's The Story.

0:15:370:15:39

HE SINGS IN WELSH

0:15:470:15:49

Thank you.

0:17:030:17:04

Watching Mellt during their performance

0:17:040:17:07

was Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, so what does he think of the festival?

0:17:070:17:10

This is my second time at Festival No 6.

0:17:100:17:13

It's in beautiful Portmeirion, near Porthmadog, and it's just

0:17:130:17:16

a beautiful part of the world and it's a beautiful festival.

0:17:160:17:18

There's always a great atmosphere,

0:17:180:17:20

real excitement in the air when you come here, I think.

0:17:200:17:22

So there's loads to see and, you know,

0:17:220:17:24

a lot of the daytime stuff, the talks and the sessions that they do

0:17:240:17:27

in the day are really interesting, I think, as well as the bands.

0:17:270:17:31

Enjoyed watching Mellt on the Bandstand,

0:17:310:17:33

the Horizons Bandstand over there.

0:17:330:17:35

Seen them a couple of times now.

0:17:350:17:36

I think they're a really exciting band from Aberystwyth.

0:17:360:17:39

I'm looking forward to seeing Delyth McLean play as well, cos

0:17:390:17:42

I haven't seen her before, and Aled Rheon, you know. And Cut Ribbons.

0:17:420:17:46

The Gorwelion Stage is fantastic, I think,

0:17:460:17:48

in terms of seeing new Welsh talent and bringing them to festivals.

0:17:480:17:52

Next up, a band who had an incredibly busy weekend at Festival No 6,

0:17:540:17:58

including three radio sessions and a performance

0:17:580:18:01

right here at our Bijou Bandstand in the Village Green.

0:18:010:18:04

This is HMS Morris.

0:18:040:18:06

# I grind my teeth when I'm thinking

0:18:090:18:11

# I grind them nice and slow

0:18:110:18:14

# I sharpen them to prepare myself

0:18:140:18:16

# For when my thoughts arrive on my tongue and go

0:18:160:18:20

# I grind my teeth when I'm making love

0:18:200:18:22

# I grind them till they glow

0:18:220:18:26

# I grind them down to prepare myself

0:18:260:18:28

# To see my long way out of you

0:18:280:18:31

# Yes, she was grinding, then sliding back and forth... #

0:18:340:18:37

Well, it's very nice to catch up with HMS Morris after a very

0:18:370:18:40

successful show. How was it for you on the Bandstand?

0:18:400:18:43

It was so much fun.

0:18:430:18:45

I haven't had so much fun playing a gig for a really, really long time.

0:18:450:18:49

Tell us a little bit about the song.

0:18:490:18:51

It's just about my problem, I grind my teeth quite a bit

0:18:510:18:53

and scare people at night-time with these...

0:18:530:18:56

I don't know how I make it, but...

0:18:560:18:58

I've controlled it by now but I used to make loud noises

0:18:580:19:01

while grinding my teeth and, like, "I don't know how that's possible."

0:19:010:19:04

It's like your teeth are having a boogie and trying to pop out of you.

0:19:040:19:07

Yes, exactly that.

0:19:070:19:09

# Just the way I roll

0:19:090:19:12

# I grind my teeth when I'm sleeping

0:19:120:19:15

# I'll grind my teeth when I'm old

0:19:150:19:18

# Is this the way you want it?

0:19:200:19:22

# No

0:19:220:19:23

# Is this the way you like it?

0:19:230:19:25

# I don't think so

0:19:250:19:26

# Is there a way to stop it?

0:19:260:19:28

# No

0:19:280:19:29

# It's just the way, it's the way

0:19:290:19:31

# It's the function in me

0:19:310:19:32

# Be honest

0:19:320:19:34

# Oh

0:19:340:19:35

# Is this the way you like it?

0:19:350:19:37

# No

0:19:370:19:38

# Is there a way to stop it?

0:19:380:19:39

# No

0:19:390:19:40

# It's just the way, it's the way

0:19:400:19:42

# It's the function in me... #

0:19:420:19:44

Heledd, there was a new concept brought into

0:19:440:19:47

the HMS Morris show this weekend.

0:19:470:19:49

Yeah, we thought, this is the last of our festivals for the summer

0:19:490:19:53

so we thought we'd go full-on and do it.

0:19:530:19:56

So I rounded up some friends and made them

0:19:560:19:58

learn some dance moves and put them in costume, just made them

0:19:580:20:01

do a dance routine through our set.

0:20:010:20:03

I think it worked out, people seemed to enjoy it, so, yeah.

0:20:030:20:06

# Is this the way you want it?

0:20:060:20:08

# No

0:20:080:20:09

# Is this the way you like it?

0:20:090:20:11

# I don't think so

0:20:110:20:12

# Is there a way to stop it?

0:20:120:20:14

# No

0:20:140:20:15

# It's just the way, it's the way

0:20:150:20:17

# It's the function in me

0:20:170:20:18

# Be honest

0:20:180:20:20

# Oh

0:20:200:20:21

# Is this the way you like it?

0:20:210:20:23

# No

0:20:230:20:24

# Is there a way to stop it?

0:20:240:20:25

# No

0:20:250:20:26

# It's just the way, it's the way

0:20:260:20:28

# It's the function in me

0:20:280:20:30

# Be honest

0:20:300:20:31

# Oh

0:20:310:20:32

# Is this the way you like it?

0:20:320:20:34

# No

0:20:340:20:35

# Is there a way to stop it?

0:20:350:20:37

# No

0:20:370:20:38

# It's just the way, it's the way

0:20:380:20:40

# It's the function in me. #

0:20:400:20:42

Thank you very much for coming and we'll see you again soon.

0:20:550:20:58

We've been HMS Morris.

0:20:580:21:01

Staying on the Dwyryd Estuary now but hopping across to the other side

0:21:010:21:05

and looking back at Portmeirion village, we filmed this

0:21:050:21:08

special performance with another of our Horizons artists, Hannah Grace.

0:21:080:21:12

# Tell me how to be like you

0:21:140:21:18

# Live my life as someone new

0:21:230:21:26

# Cos every day the same pain begins to feel OK

0:21:290:21:34

# And every night I close my eyes and it's there again

0:21:370:21:42

# Down on the floor, cut to the bone

0:21:450:21:49

# Keep on breaking when you're broke

0:21:490:21:53

# And time never heals

0:21:530:21:55

# It just seems to make it worse

0:21:550:21:59

# Oh, it's got to make you wonder

0:22:000:22:04

# How it's supposed to make you stronger

0:22:040:22:07

# I guess I have to wait in line

0:22:110:22:15

# For good things only come with time

0:22:180:22:23

# But every day the same pain begins to feel OK

0:22:250:22:31

# And every night I close my eyes and it's there again

0:22:320:22:38

# When you're down on the floor, cut to the bone

0:22:400:22:44

# Keep on breaking when you're broke

0:22:440:22:48

# When time never heals

0:22:480:22:51

# It just seems to make it worse

0:22:510:22:54

# Oh, it's got to make you wonder

0:22:560:22:59

# How it's supposed to make you stronger

0:22:590:23:04

# When all you feel is cold

0:23:040:23:07

# You don't know what you're feeling

0:23:070:23:11

# When all you need is gone

0:23:110:23:15

# There's nothing left but needing

0:23:150:23:18

# You can't walk in the light

0:23:180:23:21

# You're scared of the dark

0:23:210:23:23

# Can't be who you are, can't be who you are

0:23:230:23:27

# No-one wants to know you

0:23:270:23:29

# Nobody knows when you're down on the floor

0:23:290:23:33

# Cut to the bone

0:23:330:23:35

# Keep on breaking when you're broke

0:23:350:23:38

# When time never heals

0:23:380:23:41

# It just seems to make it worse

0:23:410:23:44

# Oh, it's got to make you wonder

0:23:460:23:50

# How it's supposed to make you stronger

0:23:500:23:54

# It's got to make you wonder

0:23:540:23:58

# How it's supposed to make you stronger. #

0:23:580:24:02

So, that's just about it from the hectic and eclectic Festival No 6.

0:24:100:24:14

Next time we'll be at the Swn Festival in Cardiff with more

0:24:140:24:17

new music from upcoming Welsh artists.

0:24:170:24:20

So, to play us out, another song from Llanelli band Cut Ribbons.

0:24:210:24:26

This is Walking On Wires.

0:24:260:24:27

# Walking on wires and the solitary cuts us

0:24:450:24:48

# We're leaving marks

0:24:510:24:52

# So deep

0:24:550:24:56

# Chasing my hands on a diary I can't reach

0:24:590:25:03

# Leaping through fantasies

0:25:060:25:09

# Just spanning the centuries

0:25:090:25:11

# It's new

0:25:130:25:14

# And it's new for you too

0:25:160:25:18

# It's new

0:25:200:25:22

# And it's new for you too

0:25:230:25:25

# Hold on tight this time

0:25:320:25:36

# Ba, ba, ba, ba

0:25:360:25:39

# Two lost souls defined

0:25:390:25:43

# Ba, ba, ba, ba

0:25:430:25:46

# Everything's going to be fine

0:25:460:25:50

# Everything's going to be fine

0:25:500:25:54

# Walking on wires

0:25:540:25:56

# Walking on wires

0:25:570:25:59

# Ba, ba, ba, ba

0:26:010:26:04

# Walking on wires and the solitary cuts us

0:26:040:26:08

# We're leaving marks

0:26:110:26:12

# Just so deep

0:26:150:26:16

# Tethered so high above the bats where our bodies sleep

0:26:190:26:23

# Leaping through fantasies

0:26:260:26:29

# Just spanning the centuries

0:26:290:26:31

# It's new

0:26:340:26:35

# And it's new for you too

0:26:360:26:38

# It's new

0:26:400:26:42

# And it's new for you too

0:26:430:26:46

# Hold on tight this time

0:26:520:26:56

# Ba, ba, ba, ba

0:26:560:26:59

# Two lost souls defined

0:26:590:27:03

# Ba, ba, ba, ba

0:27:030:27:06

# Everything's going to be fine

0:27:060:27:09

# Everything's going to be fine

0:27:100:27:12

# Walking on wires

0:27:140:27:16

# Walking on wires

0:27:170:27:19

# Ba, ba, ba, ba

0:27:210:27:24

# Hold on tight, hold on tight this time

0:27:240:27:28

-# Hold on tight

-Hold on tight this time

0:27:280:27:32

-# Hold on tight

-Hold on tight this time

0:27:320:27:36

# Hold on tight, hold on tight this time

0:27:360:27:39

# Hold on tight, hold on tight this time

0:27:390:27:43

-# Hold on tight, hold on tight

-This time

0:27:430:27:47

-# Hold on tight, hold on tight

-This time

0:27:470:27:51

# This time

0:27:530:27:56

# This time. #

0:28:010:28:04
