Hairdressing is a glamorous industry.

0:00:020:00:03

Unless you're bleeding from every orifice,

0:00:030:00:06

you can't be off sick.

0:00:060:00:08

But it's also a competitive one,

0:00:080:00:10

with more than 10,000 hairdressers in Scotland,

0:00:100:00:13

where the top stylists can earn over £70,000 a year.

0:00:130:00:16

Award-winning hairdressers Rainbow Room International

0:00:180:00:21

run Scotland's biggest training academy.

0:00:210:00:24

I've sent them home for having bad fake tan

0:00:240:00:26

or when their make-up's not done properly.

0:00:260:00:28

I went for more of a natural kinda look.

0:00:280:00:30

Where they play just as hard as they work.

0:00:300:00:33

It's like a big dysfunctional family.

0:00:330:00:35

That's exactly what it's like!

0:00:350:00:37

For one year, we follow students through their basic

0:00:390:00:41

hairdressing qualification Level 2...

0:00:410:00:44

I can do that, you know what I mean, and I just get nervous on the day.

0:00:440:00:48

..and others in their second year Level 3 advanced qualification.

0:00:480:00:52

My ambition is to... to be is to be one of the best.

0:00:520:00:55

You've got to be on it. If you're not on it, one day...

0:00:550:00:57

-Honestly, you're screwed. Literally screwed.

-Yeah.

0:00:570:01:00

But do they have what it takes to make it through the Hair Academy?

0:01:000:01:04

-You're probably a better hairdresser than...

-Everybody?

-Aye.

0:01:050:01:08

HE LAUGHS

0:01:080:01:10

Leading hairdressing chain Rainbow Room International

0:01:310:01:35

have salons across Glasgow, Stirling and Ayr.

0:01:350:01:38

In 2003, they set up a hair academy in Glasgow City Centre,

0:01:380:01:42

training over 80 students each year

0:01:420:01:45

and owners Alan and Linda are always on the lookout for new talent.

0:01:450:01:49

Some people are gifted with just that wonderful personality

0:01:490:01:54

that they love people.

0:01:540:01:56

Well, that's brilliant.

0:01:560:01:58

That's a gift in our industry.

0:01:580:01:59

Each student works in one of the 12 salons

0:02:010:02:03

and attends the academy one day a week for formal training.

0:02:030:02:07

It's a revolving door of students and every three months,

0:02:070:02:09

a new group of 16-year-olds start at the academy,

0:02:090:02:12

run by training director Leigh.

0:02:120:02:14

Today is the start of their journey into their hairdressing career.

0:02:140:02:18

You don't get to just start cutting hair straightaway.

0:02:180:02:22

There's a lot of other things that you have to learn.

0:02:220:02:25

Leigh, who started 18 years ago as Alan's assistant,

0:02:250:02:28

and helped set up the Academy,

0:02:280:02:30

welcomes the new students on their first day.

0:02:300:02:33

This is Alan's wall of fame.

0:02:330:02:35

He put this together

0:02:350:02:38

so that everybody, every single morning and every single night,

0:02:380:02:41

could see these inspirational hairdressers.

0:02:410:02:44

When I was looking at the wall full of hands,

0:02:440:02:46

it just kinda made me think "I could do that."

0:02:460:02:48

Like, just kinda gives you so much inspiration.

0:02:480:02:50

Grab a seat somewhere near the front.

0:02:500:02:53

Hairdressing isn't a job,

0:02:530:02:55

hairdressing's a career.

0:02:550:02:57

And you're at the bottom of this ladder,

0:02:570:02:59

but that ladder is like Jack And The Beanstalk -

0:02:590:03:01

there is no end to the amount of education you can get,

0:03:010:03:04

the amount of money that you can make.

0:03:040:03:06

It is the best career that you could possibly have.

0:03:060:03:09

Some of the things that we're getting to do this year...

0:03:090:03:11

the MOBOs and the BAFTAs,

0:03:110:03:13

and we're the official hairdressers for T in the Park.

0:03:130:03:17

T in the Park is the highlight in the academy's calendar,

0:03:170:03:20

and for the young students, being part of the cutting crew

0:03:200:03:23

is something that they can aspire to in the future.

0:03:230:03:26

With T in the Park, it's all rock stars that you're doing,

0:03:260:03:29

and amazing artists...

0:03:290:03:31

And it's in a field,

0:03:310:03:33

so you know that makes it very different from a salon.

0:03:330:03:36

With over 25 years of hairdressing experience,

0:03:360:03:38

and 15 years as a Rainbow Room salon director,

0:03:380:03:41

John is in charge of preparing the experienced team for the festival.

0:03:410:03:45

So you get your production pass

0:03:450:03:47

and I've managed to get yous all dinner vouchers this year, as well.

0:03:470:03:50

-ALL:

-Yay!

0:03:500:03:51

I know. It's good. Let's go and do a model.

0:03:510:03:54

Very hard, very hard work, you know.

0:03:570:03:59

You're in there up to your knees in mud sometimes.

0:03:590:04:01

You know how T in the Park is.

0:04:010:04:03

But all you're there is to offer a wee service to bands

0:04:030:04:05

who, over the years we've found out, are on the run.

0:04:050:04:08

Are just moving from place to place.

0:04:080:04:10

I've met Brandon Flowers,

0:04:100:04:11

I've met Katy Perry.

0:04:110:04:13

She's amazing.

0:04:130:04:14

The whole weekend goes by so quick, in a blur, but it's amazing.

0:04:140:04:17

It's not only the professional team who get to experience T in the Park.

0:04:180:04:22

John has got two golden tickets for his star students,

0:04:220:04:25

and he's called Craig and Emma to tell them the good news.

0:04:250:04:28

-Do you know why you're here?

-No.

0:04:280:04:30

-Any idea? You must have some idea?

-No.

0:04:300:04:32

Leigh and myself were looking at all your work,

0:04:320:04:34

particularly your dressing and your styling,

0:04:340:04:37

so we want to know if you'd like to work at T in the Park this year?

0:04:370:04:39

Really?

0:04:390:04:41

Basically, what it means is for the whole of Saturday,

0:04:430:04:46

you'll be working backstage in the green room.

0:04:460:04:48

You'll be working alongside all the stylists from the salons

0:04:480:04:51

and you'll be helping doing the artists' hair. All right?

0:04:510:04:54

-Thank you very much.

-Nae bother.

0:04:540:04:57

I was thinking that if I was actually going, I'd be so scared,

0:04:580:05:02

and now we are, I feel, like...

0:05:020:05:04

We're still excited, though.

0:05:040:05:06

I think it's fantastic, obviously.

0:05:060:05:08

Emma, I think, particularly, has been desperate to go to T in the Park.

0:05:080:05:11

So, yes - it's always nice to tell them.

0:05:110:05:13

You're going to be working in the salon for four days

0:05:160:05:20

and coming here one day.

0:05:200:05:22

So all your formal training will take place within the academy.

0:05:220:05:26

Leigh would explain how hard the job is

0:05:260:05:29

and she paints a pretty bleak picture,

0:05:290:05:32

cos it's tough.

0:05:320:05:33

You definitely won't be off sick,

0:05:350:05:36

I can pretty much guarantee that -

0:05:360:05:38

unless you have got broken legs,

0:05:380:05:41

you're bleeding from every orifice

0:05:410:05:43

or you're highly contagious,

0:05:430:05:46

you can't be off sick, so don't bother phoning.

0:05:460:05:48

One of the key skills of a successful hairdresser is handling

0:05:510:05:54

the clients, so teacher Tara

0:05:540:05:56

takes the new students through a role play.

0:05:560:05:58

It feels unnatural, it feels more unnatural

0:05:580:06:01

because it's someone you know, but if you can build up your

0:06:010:06:05

people skills doing it with someone you know, it will come really

0:06:050:06:08

naturally to you when it comes to doing it on a client.

0:06:080:06:10

OK?

0:06:100:06:12

Firm handshake.

0:06:120:06:13

Hi, I'm Roisin. I'm going to be doing your hair for you today.

0:06:130:06:17

-Have you ever been to the salon before?

-No, not yet.

0:06:170:06:19

Erm, what I'm going to do first is I'm going to do

0:06:190:06:22

a hair strand test... Don't make me laugh!

0:06:220:06:26

My dream is to qualify

0:06:260:06:28

and go away somewhere like, abroad

0:06:280:06:31

and get my own business and have people working for me,

0:06:310:06:35

and like, do really good for myself.

0:06:350:06:37

See if you go back up?

0:06:370:06:39

'My goals are to work my way up'

0:06:390:06:41

and try and actually open my own shop.

0:06:410:06:44

I've noticed, like, like some of the hair is actually

0:06:440:06:48

straight on girls and then some bits are actual curled.

0:06:480:06:51

-Aye.

-I think that's like, quite a big thing right now.

0:06:510:06:55

Aye, probably.

0:06:550:06:56

My ambition is to be one of the best and to get people to want to

0:06:570:07:03

pay a lot of money for me to do their hair.

0:07:030:07:05

Are you happy with it? No?!

0:07:050:07:08

I think they done really well for their first day,

0:07:080:07:10

it's quite intimidating for them,

0:07:100:07:11

but as long as they've got

0:07:110:07:13

someone at the same level as them, I think they feel OK.

0:07:130:07:15

On day one, I try not to terrify them too much.

0:07:160:07:19

Erm, I do, you know,

0:07:190:07:21

try and make them understand that this is the rules

0:07:210:07:24

and the rules AREN'T made to be broken,

0:07:240:07:28

but I give them a little bit of leeway.

0:07:280:07:31

It's not until they have to be pulled in again and

0:07:310:07:34

spoken to that they understand the full wrath of my bad mood!

0:07:340:07:38

Students Angel and Alijah have already been in the academy

0:07:420:07:45

for six months.

0:07:450:07:46

I first started as a Saturday assistant and I'm from Stirling

0:07:480:07:51

and that's where I work, as well, you know what I mean? Stirling.

0:07:510:07:54

I grew up in LA, but I moved here when I was 14 and now I'm 16.

0:07:550:07:59

One of the rules of salon life is some of the students will have to

0:08:010:08:05

choose a new name.

0:08:050:08:06

If there's somebody with the same name as you, you have to

0:08:070:08:10

change it and erm, I choose Binky because I watch Made In Chelsea

0:08:100:08:14

all the time and I really love the name Binky and she's in it.

0:08:140:08:18

If you have two people called Jack, it would be confusing for clients.

0:08:180:08:22

Hi, Katherine, I'm Jack... I mean, Syd.

0:08:220:08:24

Syd's the name he came up with, apparently in tribute to

0:08:240:08:28

Syd Barrett and apparently in tribute to Sid the sloth in Ice Age.

0:08:280:08:33

My name's Tara - with a T, cos everyone calls me Lara, Cara,

0:08:340:08:37

do you know what I mean?

0:08:370:08:39

But anyway, my salon name is Angel.

0:08:390:08:41

I won't know her as Tara - I'll know her as her salon name,

0:08:410:08:44

so I know her completely as Angel.

0:08:440:08:46

Tara's my name.

0:08:460:08:47

Shut the front door, that's MY name. Aw, it's weird.

0:08:470:08:50

And your mum's called that, as well.

0:08:500:08:52

I was surprised no-one's dog was called that, cos

0:08:520:08:55

everyone's dog is called Tara.

0:08:550:08:57

My real name is Jack

0:08:570:08:58

and then I changed it to Austin

0:08:580:09:00

cos it's my grandpa's maiden name.

0:09:000:09:02

Students are continually assessed

0:09:050:09:07

and Level-2 assistant Angel is hoping to get passed off on her

0:09:070:09:11

one-length cut and full-head permanent colour

0:09:110:09:14

by teacher Sarah Jane.

0:09:140:09:15

Best of luck!

0:09:150:09:17

I've seen you do one-lengths before.

0:09:180:09:20

Make sure your sections are nice and clean, and neat and even.

0:09:200:09:23

You need quite a lot of interaction through the assessment or

0:09:230:09:25

we cannae pass you off on it, alrighty?

0:09:250:09:28

Should be great, OK.

0:09:280:09:29

You can do it.

0:09:290:09:30

Hi, nice to meet you.

0:09:320:09:34

-Hi.

-So it's Lizzy, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:09:340:09:36

My name's Angel, I'll be doing your hair for you today, OK.

0:09:360:09:38

When I first met Angel, you gotta know how to take her.

0:09:410:09:43

Her personality's quite strong.

0:09:430:09:45

That weekend, I was just at a party and stuff,

0:09:450:09:47

know what I'm saying, living the good life.

0:09:470:09:49

As long as she doesn't say anything too offensive

0:09:490:09:51

and she's professional, then that's fine.

0:09:510:09:53

But halfway through the cut, Angel has to ask Sarah Jane for guidance.

0:09:570:10:01

Can you straighten it up for me?

0:10:010:10:02

It's not a straight line and I can tell.

0:10:020:10:04

See, as long as you just stick to your guideline, honey, you're fine.

0:10:060:10:09

Was I doing wrong pulling it down too much, here?

0:10:090:10:11

Pulling it down too much, too much tension

0:10:110:10:14

and you were cutting bang on the line.

0:10:140:10:16

-Perfect.

-OK.

0:10:160:10:18

We get these wee people at points in their life where

0:10:210:10:24

they go through all their firsts, you know - first love,

0:10:240:10:26

first break-up, sometimes horrible things like first illnesses

0:10:260:10:30

or losses of family and things like that and you're there to just

0:10:300:10:33

shepherd this person through a really important part of your life.

0:10:330:10:37

I hope to achieve the two years of training and then get

0:10:410:10:44

took on as a stylist and then maybe be one of the top stylists.

0:10:440:10:49

Student Sophie is one of nine assistants

0:10:490:10:52

at the Great Western Road salon, run by John.

0:10:520:10:56

Sophie has the potential, her practical work is good,

0:10:560:10:59

she follows instruction well, she's getting better every week.

0:10:590:11:02

Mum tried to get into it when she was younger,

0:11:020:11:04

cos she was a hairdresser and she just never got in

0:11:040:11:07

so then Mum said, like, "Why don't you try to get in?"

0:11:070:11:10

So I gave it a try.

0:11:100:11:11

Sophie was only maybe about 11 and she'd be able to blow dry

0:11:130:11:16

somebody's hair using the brush and the dryer moving at the same time

0:11:160:11:19

which is a knack, not a lot of people can do that,

0:11:190:11:22

that's how a lot of trainees burn people's heads and things like that.

0:11:220:11:25

I used to always watch my mum, picking up wee things

0:11:250:11:27

and then trying it on her hair and my sister's hair

0:11:270:11:30

and it's just something I just brought up and wanted to do.

0:11:300:11:33

In 2012, Sophie's mum Amanda was diagnosed with breast cancer.

0:11:330:11:39

I'll never ever forget the look on her face when I told her,

0:11:390:11:42

the look in her eyes.

0:11:420:11:43

Well, I took the decision to shave my head - I thought

0:11:440:11:49

that losing my hair coming out in clumps would be far too upsetting.

0:11:490:11:54

And I heard the clippers going and then I heard somebody, like, crying

0:11:550:11:58

a wee bit and I walked out of the room and it was my mum, doing it herself.

0:11:580:12:02

She stopped and then we looked at each other

0:12:020:12:05

and we both burst out laughing and then she handed me them

0:12:050:12:08

and was like, "Do you want to do it?" and I was like, "Erm, OK."

0:12:080:12:12

So then I look the clippers and done the rest of her hair.

0:12:120:12:15

The day I found out I got the all-clear,

0:12:160:12:18

I was like, dancing about my kitchen.

0:12:180:12:20

And since then, Amanda has set up a wig bank to help other women

0:12:200:12:24

dealing with hair loss.

0:12:240:12:26

When she got the all-clear, that's when I started at the Rainbow Room.

0:12:260:12:30

She was clever enough to deal with that and come

0:12:320:12:34

and get a new job and a brand-new trade so she was...ballsy,

0:12:340:12:38

kind of brave to do that, I think, to come into hairdressing

0:12:380:12:43

at that time when she was going through so much at home.

0:12:430:12:45

Back at the academy, having needed assistance with her one-length cut,

0:12:520:12:56

Angel moves on to be assessed on her full-head permanent colour.

0:12:560:13:00

So you quite like doing colour, then?

0:13:000:13:02

Yeah, deffos - it's my favourite thing.

0:13:020:13:06

It's this Scottish weather - I swear to God, I hate it.

0:13:080:13:10

I know, every time we're in America, I'm like, I want to move here.

0:13:100:13:13

Can you not see me in America? Oh, my God, I should be American.

0:13:130:13:16

You should be.

0:13:160:13:17

Let's have a wee nosy. Does it look quite even?

0:13:190:13:22

Yeah, cos I went like that - whoop!

0:13:220:13:24

That's perfection, beautiful.

0:13:260:13:29

I'll give you my decision at the end

0:13:310:13:33

when I see your colour applied and dried and all that kinda good stuff.

0:13:330:13:36

OK - so you follow me.

0:13:360:13:38

..The right temperature.

0:13:410:13:43

You were really good - you just lost your confidence,

0:13:430:13:46

so from your cut point of view, unfortunately

0:13:460:13:48

I need to fail the assessment,

0:13:480:13:50

-so do you have any issues with that, are you...?

-No,

0:13:500:13:52

I know it's a learning curve, you know what I mean?

0:13:520:13:55

So I'll learn from it, so it's not a total fail - it's a learn.

0:13:550:13:59

-But your colour was perfect.

-OK.

0:13:590:14:01

Aye, it was dead even through to the end.

0:14:010:14:04

Well done - so I'm going to pass you off on your colour, right?

0:14:040:14:07

That's it. Perfect.

0:14:070:14:09

For those who don't get to go to T in the Park,

0:14:150:14:17

there's still a chance to feel like a rock star.

0:14:170:14:20

Each year, the staff and students record a novelty single

0:14:200:14:23

which they sell in the salons to raise money for charity.

0:14:230:14:26

Leader of the band is Royal Exchange Square salon director

0:14:260:14:30

and guitar enthusiast David, who has come to the academy to hold

0:14:300:14:34

auditions for places in the salon band.

0:14:340:14:36

A lucky few will get to spend a day with him in the recording studio.

0:14:360:14:40

So are you three auditioning tonight?

0:14:420:14:45

-Guitar - no singing.

-No singing.

0:14:460:14:48

Singing is not my strong point.

0:14:480:14:49

Same with me, I probably sound like a dying mouse or something.

0:14:490:14:53

A dying mouse?

0:14:530:14:55

What about you? What's your favourite karaoke song?

0:14:550:14:58

Erm, it would have to be...Amy Winehouse.

0:14:580:15:02

Students and stylists arrive for the charity single auditions.

0:15:100:15:14

To help choose the winners, David has enlisted

0:15:140:15:17

the help of some of his colleagues.

0:15:170:15:19

I'd like you to give a warm welcome to our panel of judges this evening.

0:15:200:15:24

Oh, I'm ruthless, you know - I take no prisoners.

0:15:260:15:29

If they're crap, they're crap.

0:15:290:15:31

I'll let Alan be the bad guy, like Simon,

0:15:320:15:35

so I'm either Sharon or Kylie.

0:15:350:15:39

I'll go Kylie.

0:15:390:15:40

Music is probably my first love, so it will be very interesting

0:15:400:15:44

to hear it getting murdered this evening.

0:15:440:15:46

It's about pushing young people and if you can push them

0:15:490:15:52

with their hairdressing it's great, if you can push them in other

0:15:520:15:55

ways of creativity it all makes them more rounded, more confident people.

0:15:550:16:00

Oh, what - man, nah, shut the front door, look at all them,

0:16:000:16:03

I can't handle that.

0:16:030:16:04

Yeah, actually - everyone turn their back and it will be a lot better.

0:16:040:16:07

I got actually nervous about it, I was freaking out.

0:16:070:16:09

A part of me was like, naw, I'm not gonna do it,

0:16:090:16:11

but then some of the guys know that I do rapping

0:16:110:16:13

and stuff and they were like, "Aw, come on, Angel - you got

0:16:130:16:16

"to do it, you got to do it" and I was like, "Argh!"

0:16:160:16:19

SHE RAPS SONG

0:16:190:16:20

So my name is Tara always seem to be in the drama

0:16:200:16:22

I have no luck that's why I always seem to get stuck

0:16:220:16:24

It's a life skill knowing what I wanted to do

0:16:240:16:26

Do it here, just like you Here's my heart on the line

0:16:260:16:29

Everyone knows I was born to shine - boo!

0:16:290:16:31

Wow - you are a star, a star.

0:16:350:16:38

Well done.

0:16:380:16:39

I enjoyed it, I'm glad I did it now, you know what I mean,

0:16:390:16:42

once you've done it, you're glad you've done it.

0:16:420:16:44

# Baby, can't you see I'm calling... #

0:16:440:16:48

Alan and Linda are my bosses, so I'm a little bit afraid of them,

0:16:480:16:51

like, what if they fired me or something - I never know.

0:16:510:16:56

# Then my head's spinning round and round

0:16:560:17:00

# Can you feel me now... #

0:17:000:17:03

Not 100% on the words, actually!

0:17:030:17:05

LAUGHTER

0:17:050:17:07

Eh, like I was quite scared at doing it at first.

0:17:100:17:13

HE SINGS: Tears Dry On Their Own

0:17:130:17:18

But then I just kinda got in the hang of it

0:17:180:17:20

and just kinda blanked everyone out.

0:17:200:17:22

# And in your way in this blue shade

0:17:220:17:25

# My tears dry on their own... #

0:17:250:17:29

Really original, liked it a lot.

0:17:290:17:33

APPLAUSE

0:17:330:17:35

# Popular, you're gonna be popular

0:17:350:17:39

# I'll teach you that proper ploys when you talk to boys

0:17:390:17:43

# Little ways to flirt and flounce Ooh!

0:17:430:17:45

# There's nothing that can stop you from becoming popular...lar! #

0:17:450:17:49

Now, THAT'S what I'm talking about!

0:17:490:17:52

As David considers who'll join him in the recording studio,

0:17:540:17:57

the auditions become slightly chaotic.

0:17:570:18:00

I've been practising my Rod Stewart gravelly voice by drinking

0:18:010:18:04

incessantly for, you know, maybe 40 years.

0:18:040:18:07

# I feel like making love... #

0:18:070:18:09

I think I've nailed it.

0:18:090:18:11

# I feel like making love... #

0:18:120:18:14

You can't sing, you can't play,

0:18:190:18:22

you look terrible,

0:18:220:18:24

you'll go a long way!

0:18:240:18:26

Over the weekend, 85,000 people a day descend on a disused

0:18:360:18:40

airfield in Balado to see more than 150 bands play their hearts out.

0:18:400:18:45

This year is the 20th anniversary of T in the Park

0:18:450:18:48

and the drinks are flowing, the temperatures are soaring

0:18:480:18:50

and everyone is in the mood to party.

0:18:500:18:53

But backstage, there is one tent that is hard at work.

0:18:530:18:56

We got up at 5am this morning

0:19:000:19:01

-and drove from Spain, which took about 13 hours.

-Did you?

0:19:010:19:04

I've never been to Scotland before, this is my first time.

0:19:040:19:07

-Does this feel cold to you?

-You're my third Scottish person I've ever met.

0:19:070:19:10

It's not T for us until we've done The View.

0:19:100:19:13

How long do you think we've had the salon here now?

0:19:180:19:20

-Eight years.

-Eight years, aye.

0:19:200:19:22

It started off with James Brown's hood dryer,

0:19:220:19:26

they phoned to get the hood dryer,

0:19:260:19:28

a granny dryer for his rollers and then

0:19:280:19:30

eventually John went,

0:19:300:19:32

"Will we not just set up a salon?" and that was it.

0:19:320:19:35

That's perfect.

0:19:350:19:37

I was here when James Brown was playing, that was brilliant.

0:19:370:19:41

Lucky students Craig and Emma have been busy all morning

0:19:410:19:44

preparing the hair extensions for the stylists.

0:19:440:19:47

Slightly nervous about it now, I'm sure it'll be a good day.

0:19:470:19:51

Obviously it's a lot of pressure, so it's exciting,

0:19:510:19:54

but scary as well!

0:19:540:19:55

This year is proving to be one of the busiest ever

0:19:570:19:59

at the hairdressing tent with lots of image-conscience

0:19:590:20:02

celebs wanting to look their best before going on stage.

0:20:020:20:06

How do you feel? Is it all right?

0:20:060:20:08

Yeah...

0:20:080:20:09

-Is the pressure all right?

-Yeah, it's really good.

0:20:090:20:12

A lot of the artists have said they've seen people coming

0:20:120:20:15

back with great haircuts so that's brought them in,

0:20:150:20:17

so we haven't stopped all day.

0:20:170:20:19

I try and make T in the Park a bit more special

0:20:190:20:21

and the guys have done a fantastic job over the years in here

0:20:210:20:24

and the bands all go out looking fantastic when they go on stage.

0:20:240:20:27

MUSIC PLAYS

0:20:270:20:29

As well as doing the hair, the team try and get some of the artists

0:20:310:20:35

to sign one of their guitars, which will be auctioned off for charity.

0:20:350:20:39

-Ah!

-I don't want to take that, that's a bit... That's a bit of a...

0:20:390:20:43

-I'll do it up here.

-You deserve to take that.

0:20:430:20:45

-I don't think I do.

-You do, Calvin.

0:20:450:20:48

Oh, my God, I'm having a moment!

0:20:480:20:50

After working hard in the tent all day,

0:20:530:20:56

Craig and Emma take a well-earned break.

0:20:560:20:58

What are stovies?

0:21:000:21:02

It's kinda like thick soup.

0:21:020:21:04

It's where it joins in - look.

0:21:060:21:07

Stop it... Craig, we could easily kill ourselves on this.

0:21:070:21:11

It's been a great day coming here.

0:21:190:21:21

We would be in the salon doing hair,

0:21:210:21:23

so it's just a lovely environment to come and work in and it's great fun.

0:21:230:21:27

It went quite well, there was quite a lot of people in,

0:21:280:21:31

the salon was busy, saw some familiar faces.

0:21:310:21:34

I was desperate to see The Script, but then I missed them

0:21:340:21:37

cos I was obviously floating around trying to see someone else.

0:21:370:21:39

At the Academy, it's business as usual for the new students.

0:21:500:21:54

So we've got a really, really busy day, it's maybe not going to

0:21:540:21:57

be that much fun, because a lot of it is paperwork.

0:21:570:21:59

We've got reviews to get done,

0:21:590:22:01

so what I want yous to do first of all is I need yous to write

0:22:010:22:04

up a list of what yous have still got to do practical-wise.

0:22:040:22:07

The students are only assessed when working on live models,

0:22:080:22:12

but mostly practise their cuts and hair styles on the Sally head dolls.

0:22:120:22:16

On average, the dolls only last for about six weeks

0:22:160:22:19

and each student has to shell out £32 for a replacement.

0:22:190:22:24

-Right, who doesn't have Sally heads?

-I need to buy a new one next week.

0:22:240:22:27

You'll need to go sort it, you'll need to go and figure it out

0:22:270:22:30

cos I've got nothing for yous to do if you've not got a Sally head.

0:22:300:22:33

Go figure it out.

0:22:330:22:34

Do you have a name for your Sally?

0:22:340:22:38

Have you?

0:22:380:22:39

Aye, mines is called Sally Cinnamon.

0:22:390:22:41

What?

0:22:410:22:42

Please tell me you've heard that song before?

0:22:420:22:45

# Sally Cinnamon You're my world... #

0:22:450:22:49

-Binky, are you ready for your review?

-All right.

0:22:490:22:52

And then I'll grab you, Austin, as well.

0:22:520:22:54

So G17 you've completed,

0:22:560:22:58

GH10 you've completed,

0:22:580:23:01

GH11 you've completed,

0:23:010:23:04

G7 you've completed...

0:23:040:23:07

-That's brilliant.

-Thank you.

0:23:070:23:10

Back at awesome.

0:23:100:23:11

Right, OK - the problem is now you need to keep that pace up, that's the problem.

0:23:130:23:16

I said my Sally is called Sally Cinnamon and they were clueless.

0:23:160:23:20

As to what?

0:23:200:23:22

Like, what Sally Cinnamon is.

0:23:220:23:23

What is it?

0:23:230:23:25

It's a Stone Roses song! Why does nobody know this?

0:23:250:23:27

Cos I'm not cool, I'm a mum! I watch The Voice at the weekend.

0:23:270:23:31

# I tell Sally I was never happy... #

0:23:310:23:36

But unfortunately for one of the new students, their time

0:23:360:23:40

at the Academy has already come to an end.

0:23:400:23:43

If we do have leavers,

0:23:450:23:46

it does tend to be at the beginning of the course.

0:23:460:23:49

I think for Roisin, I think the course was just a bit harder than

0:23:490:23:53

she expected it to be.

0:23:530:23:55

Unfortunately, some people just don't make it.

0:23:550:23:58

There was too many people in the Rainbow Room and I found it

0:23:590:24:02

hard to get my training done right,

0:24:020:24:05

but I'm still doing hairdressing and

0:24:050:24:07

where I work the now, there's only two of us, so I find it much easier.

0:24:070:24:11

# Sally Cinnamon, you're her world. #

0:24:110:24:17

How's things been?

0:24:180:24:19

Been all right.

0:24:210:24:22

Yeah? All right?

0:24:220:24:23

HG11, so if we go to that unit

0:24:230:24:25

and see what you've still got left to complete...

0:24:250:24:28

It's just kinda everything.

0:24:280:24:30

Yeah, but you've been doing all the practical work, practising it

0:24:300:24:33

on your Sally head and practising it on your block head so we just

0:24:330:24:35

need to find the models for that, so when are we going to get models in?

0:24:350:24:38

Eh, I'm going to try and look for them.

0:24:400:24:42

The main thing we need from our assistants is that they

0:24:420:24:45

realise they have to have a set amount of models, they have to cut

0:24:450:24:49

hair, the practical aspect of their job is the most important thing.

0:24:490:24:52

If they can't get someone to get their hair cut for free, then

0:24:520:24:55

they're not going to get someone to charge £30 for a haircut.

0:24:550:24:58

OK, so be more organised and organise your models

0:25:000:25:02

a week in advance.

0:25:020:25:05

All right?

0:25:050:25:06

If you just carry on with your project, please.

0:25:060:25:10

Thank you.

0:25:100:25:11

Eh, I'm feeling better than what I was when I first came - like,

0:25:110:25:15

I always end up getting my hair done different colours and stuff

0:25:150:25:18

like that and that always seems to bring my confidence up a wee bit.

0:25:180:25:22

For the salon band, the big day has come as they head to the

0:25:240:25:27

studio to record the single that will be sold in the salons

0:25:270:25:30

to raise money for charity.

0:25:300:25:32

From all the rehearsals, we've picked three really good singers,

0:25:340:25:37

it's going to be great fun.

0:25:370:25:39

We're all looking forward to it and they're quite happy

0:25:390:25:41

because they're away from the salon for a bit of a skive of a day.

0:25:410:25:45

Oh, my God, stretch.

0:25:450:25:48

The song is their own take on Bad Company's Feel Like Makin' Love.

0:25:490:25:53

Try that, if that's easier?

0:25:540:25:55

-# Feel like doing hair... #

-But that's flat.

0:25:550:25:58

Oh, touche!

0:25:590:26:01

-Are you really going there?

-All right, girlfriend!

0:26:010:26:05

ALL: # Feel like doing hair! #

0:26:050:26:07

That's it, excellent.

0:26:070:26:08

-Break a leg.

-I shall.

0:26:100:26:12

Scared.

0:26:140:26:16

# Baby, when I think about you

0:26:160:26:20

# I think about hair

0:26:200:26:25

# Darlin', when I see you coming... #

0:26:260:26:30

Her voice is off.

0:26:300:26:32

# Hair

0:26:320:26:35

# Feel like doing hair... #

0:26:350:26:38

# Feel like doing hair... #

0:26:400:26:42

We'll just do one more take.

0:26:460:26:48

-Was that OK?

-Nah, that's you.

0:26:480:26:51

-That was great.

-Thanks!

0:26:510:26:53

OK, that's you.

0:26:530:26:55

While David lays down the final guitar track,

0:26:550:26:57

Angel gives the girls the lowdown on her new rap.

0:26:570:27:00

Part of it is about how everyone is trying to make it and stuff

0:27:010:27:04

like that, so a smidge cheeseball!

0:27:040:27:08

And I actually wrote it on Monday night when I was eating my savoury roll supper - you've had one of them?

0:27:100:27:15

-No.

-Oh, my God, it was so good.

0:27:150:27:16

-Angel, that's you, when you're ready.

-OK.

0:27:180:27:21

SHE HUMS NERVOUSLY

0:27:210:27:23

How come I can hear me, like, speaking through this?

0:27:250:27:28

-Through this.

-Is it that what it...? Shut up! SHE LAUGHS

0:27:280:27:32

Oh, my God. I'm so laughing. That's quite funny. ANGEL LAUGHS

0:27:320:27:35

Do I go now?

0:27:350:27:37

Do I just...? I don't know when to go.

0:27:380:27:41

SHE RAPS: Well, I'll be down here Please sit down

0:27:430:27:45

I'll make you aware

0:27:450:27:46

I'll play the game and I'll put you to shame

0:27:460:27:48

This has been my dream ever since I was 14

0:27:480:27:50

Let the haters hate because they just can't relate

0:27:500:27:52

Don't bring me down

0:27:520:27:54

I'll be the first to leave this town

0:27:540:27:55

Bright lights call my name
