0:00:440:00:45

Hello, I'm Andy and this is Kai.

0:00:500:00:54

Kai is a chameleon

0:00:540:00:55

and chameleons have very clever tricks.

0:00:550:00:59

Look at Kai's eyes.

0:00:590:01:00

They can look in two separate directions.

0:01:000:01:03

They swivel around.

0:01:030:01:05

Look at them.

0:01:050:01:06

Lots of baby animals have clever tricks in the wild.

0:01:070:01:11

First stop - California.

0:01:120:01:14

This family of ground squirrels live in the wide open prairies.

0:01:170:01:21

For the little baby squirrels, called kits,

0:01:230:01:26

life is just one long playtime.

0:01:260:01:30

Uh, hide-and-seek, anyone?

0:01:300:01:33

Ground squirrels eat grass and seeds,

0:01:360:01:39

so there's always plenty to munch on here.

0:01:390:01:42

But not all the animals who live here eat plants.

0:01:440:01:49

Oh.

0:01:490:01:51

They've seen something.

0:01:510:01:52

It's a rattlesnake!

0:01:540:01:56

And they like to munch on baby squirrels.

0:01:560:01:59

To stay safe, these kits need to learn a few tricks from Mum.

0:02:020:02:06

First, shake your fluffy tail.

0:02:090:02:12

She's not entering a dance competition.

0:02:150:02:18

Shaking her tail is actually a good way of putting off

0:02:180:02:21

unwanted visitors.

0:02:210:02:23

It's a way of telling the snake that she's on her guard.

0:02:240:02:28

Show us your moves, little one.

0:02:300:02:32

Ha-ha! That's it!

0:02:330:02:36

Clear off, Mr Rattlesnake.

0:02:360:02:38

And if tail-shaking doesn't work,

0:02:390:02:41

Mum has another trick to see off this scary snake.

0:02:410:02:45

She's found a piece of old snake skin.

0:02:490:02:52

And she's chewing it into a paste and rubbing it all over herself.

0:02:560:03:00

It may be terrible table manners,

0:03:020:03:04

but it's actually a very clever trick.

0:03:040:03:07

With chewed up snake skin in her fur,

0:03:090:03:12

she doesn't smell like a squirrel anymore.

0:03:120:03:15

She smells - you guessed it - like a rattlesnake.

0:03:150:03:20

It's a bit like spraying yourself with perfume or deodorant.

0:03:200:03:24

Right, it's time to try out her tricks.

0:03:260:03:29

By wafting her new snaky smell at the rattler,

0:03:290:03:33

she's trying to fool it

0:03:330:03:34

into thinking there's a rival snake around.

0:03:340:03:37

SNAKE RATTLES

0:03:370:03:39

But will this and her wagging tail be enough to rattle this snake?

0:03:410:03:45

Yes, it will.

0:03:540:03:56

It's worked.

0:03:560:03:57

He's slithering off.

0:03:570:03:59

Phew!

0:03:590:04:00

Now, thanks to Mum's clever tricks,

0:04:000:04:03

the kits can get back to their fun and games.

0:04:130:04:15

Now to Indonesia.

0:04:160:04:18

There are not one, but two tricky customers living here.

0:04:210:04:25

This odd looking animal is a young coconut octopus.

0:04:290:04:33

It needs to keep an eye out at all times

0:04:350:04:37

as there are lots of animals around that would love to eat it.

0:04:370:04:41

Looks like the coast is clear.

0:04:440:04:46

Or is it?

0:04:480:04:50

This flounder fish's trick is camouflage.

0:04:510:04:54

And it's using it to sneak up on our young octopus.

0:04:560:05:00

But the coconut octopus has a trick too.

0:05:020:05:06

And its name is a bit of a clue.

0:05:070:05:10

It's found a coconut shell on the seabed.

0:05:100:05:14

And using its eight tentacles, it's carrying it away.

0:05:180:05:22

Watch out, there's that sneaky flounder fish again.

0:05:260:05:30

With half a shell, the octopus is only half safe.

0:05:320:05:36

It needs to find another shell before the flounder fish catches up.

0:05:380:05:42

Oh, there's one, behind you.

0:05:450:05:47

Ha-ha! He's got it!

0:05:510:05:53

But the flounder fish is closing in.

0:05:560:05:58

It's time to play your trick, little octopus.

0:06:010:06:04

Drumroll, please.

0:06:060:06:07

Girls and boys, I present to you the incredible disappearing octopus!

0:06:070:06:13

By hiding inside the shell,

0:06:160:06:18

it's turned itself into a ball

0:06:180:06:20

and now it can simply roll away from danger.

0:06:200:06:24

What a brilliant trick!

0:06:250:06:27

Ha-ha, it might be a bit dizzy though.

0:06:350:06:37

Next we're off to Malaysia.

0:06:370:06:39

Even the smallest animals have a few tricks up their sleeve.

0:06:410:06:44

This delicate white shape lives in the Malaysian rainforest.

0:06:470:06:52

It looks like a flower, but it's actually an insect in disguise.

0:06:520:06:58

It's an orchid mantis.

0:06:580:07:01

And these are orchid mantis babies.

0:07:010:07:04

They look like little shrimps, don't they?

0:07:040:07:07

There are lots of creepy-crawlies in the rainforest.

0:07:090:07:12

Like this jumping spider.

0:07:120:07:15

And many of them would love to gobble up a baby mantis.

0:07:150:07:20

But these little insects have lots of tricks to keep them safe.

0:07:200:07:25

They can hang upside down under a leaf

0:07:250:07:28

to stay hidden from hungry eyes and they've got a suit of armour, too.

0:07:280:07:34

You and I have a tough skeleton on the inside.

0:07:340:07:37

But mantes have it on the outside to help protect them.

0:07:370:07:41

How clever is that?

0:07:410:07:44

And very striking it is, too.

0:07:440:07:46

Even with armour, this tiny mantis is still very vulnerable.

0:07:470:07:51

And a jumping spider has spotted it.

0:07:520:07:55

Mantes have two giant eyes so it can easily see the spider coming.

0:07:570:08:03

But the jumping spider has eight eyes

0:08:030:08:06

and they're all watching to make sure it doesn't escape.

0:08:060:08:10

It's hard to run away when you're only as big as a thumbnail.

0:08:120:08:16

The jumping spider can easily hop from leaf to leaf.

0:08:170:08:21

But for the tiny mantis, it's like leaping between two skyscrapers.

0:08:250:08:30

Don't worry though, the baby mantis has one last trick to play,

0:08:390:08:44

because it knows kung fu.

0:08:440:08:48

Hi-ya!

0:08:480:08:50

This martial arts pose makes it look much bigger than it really is.

0:08:530:08:58

Big enough to scare off a spider.

0:08:580:09:01

Hoo-ee-ya!

0:09:010:09:04

Ya!

0:09:040:09:06

Hoo...

0:09:060:09:07

Bye-bye, spider.

0:09:090:09:10

You don't mess with a kung fu master!

0:09:100:09:13

He-ya...

0:09:130:09:16

And with tricks like this to keep it safe,

0:09:160:09:19

one day it'll grow up to be blooming beautiful,

0:09:190:09:23

just like this grown-up.

0:09:230:09:25

For a ground squirrel kit, a baby mantis,

0:09:290:09:33

a young octopus or a baby chameleon like Kai,

0:09:330:09:36

the animal world has all kinds of tricks to learn.

0:09:360:09:40

See you next time.
