Hello. I'm Andy. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
And this is a baby snake. It's called a python. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
And they don't have legs, so to get around, they slither. | 0:00:55 | 0:01:01
And they slither using these fantastic scales, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
which grip the ground. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
They have very strong muscles in their tummy | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
to help them move forward. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
All over the place, wild baby animals are on the move. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
First up, let's take a trip to Tanzania in Africa. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
Here's an animal that's very fast on its feet, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
but blink and you'll miss it. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
What? Hey, where did it go? | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
Ah, there she is. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
This is a sengi, sometimes called an elephant shrew. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:39
I can't think why with that trunk-like nose! | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
She's caring for her baby, which means lots of feeding. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
Drinking milk can be pretty tricky with such a big nose, though. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:58
Her baby is only a few weeks old, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
but like all sengi, she's born to run. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
And already she's almost as fast as Mum. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Their powerful back legs make sengi | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
one of the fastest small mammals in the world. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
To help her speed around, she's even built her own racetrack. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:26
Neeeow! | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
Neeeow! Neeeow! | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
Neeeow! Neeeow! | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
And it's the perfect place to go hunting for tasty bugs. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:39
Got ya! | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
To make sure nothing trips her up, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
she has to keep her racetrack clear of twigs and leaves. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
Go on, get out of it. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
It's so important, she spends half a day every day doing this. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
Imagine having to tidy your room for half a day! Boring! | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
It's worth it, though, for a sengi, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
because as well as helping her find food, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
a clean racetrack also helps stop her from becoming food. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:18
This monitor lizard has its eye on our sengi. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
Good luck, Mr Lizard. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
I hope you've got your running shoes on. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
Ho-ho! Talk about fast food! | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
The monitor lizard is much bigger, but our little sengi is agile | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
and knows every twist and turn of this racetrack. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
Er, you can stop running now. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
It looks like the poor old monitor lizard has run out of puff. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
ANDY SIGHS | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
Well done, sengi. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09

Next, we're off to the top of the world - the Arctic. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
For some babies, getting around doesn't involve any running at all. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
These young guillemot chicks need a good head for heights | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
as soon as they're born, | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
because for the first few weeks of their life, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
they live here on these spectacular cliffs. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
It's a very popular spot for guillemot families. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
There are 100,000 birds here. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
Halfway up a cliff may be a scary place for you or me to live, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
but it's a very safe place for a guillemot chick, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
away from arctic foxes and other predators. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
They can't stay here for ever, though. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
Winter is on the way and the guillemots need to move on, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
which is a bit of a problem. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
The chicks are still very young, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
and their stubby wings are too short for flying, | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
but maybe they can glide. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:27
If the chicks can make it to the sea, they'll be safe, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
but from up here, it looks like an awfully long way down! | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
ANDY GULPS | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39
Ohh! This chick doesn't look too sure about this. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
Here goes! | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Oh! | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49 | |
Ohhhhh! | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
Oh! Oh! | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
Uhh! Ha! Made it. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
Phew! It's OK. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
But with that arctic fox there, | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
it looks like it's going to have to do some running. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
Go on, quickly! | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
Let's see how the next chick does. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
There's the grown-up behind giving it some encouragement. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
Go on. You can do it. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
One, two, three... | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
Geronimo! | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
And, look! The grown-up's in the backseat shouting directions. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
Looking good! | 0:06:33 | 0:06:34
Oh! Oof! | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
Bit of a belly flop there, but...made it. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
And so have all its friends, too. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
Brilliant. Good job, everyone. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51

Now we're off to Botswana in Africa. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
Sometimes even land animals need to know how to get about in the water. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
This adorable fellow is a chacma baboon baby. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
They spend most of their life on dry land. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
Ahh, look at him! | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
But once a year, the Okavango River overflows with rain | 0:07:22 | 0:07:28
and lots of animals come to feast on the fresh new plants | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
that grow on the flood plains. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
Buffalo. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:39
Antelope. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
Even elephants. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
And if the baboons want their share of the yummy plants, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
well, they just have to wade in, too. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
Luckily, baboons can walk upright on two feet, just like us, | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
which leaves their hands free to pick the tastiest shoots. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
And the odd flower. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
The grown-ups make it look easy, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
but for the young baboons, it takes a bit of practice. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
Don't go too deep, little one. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
This very young baboon has a different way of getting around, | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
although it seems like it's still getting wet. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
Maybe it's time to try a piggyback. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
That's better. And it can do a little grazing itself. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
Ooh! What's Mum got? | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
Ohhh! | 0:08:52 | 0:08:53 | |
It's a juicy snail. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
Mm! | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58 | |
Hm... Lovely(!) | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
Soon this baby will learn how to wade through the water on its own, | 0:09:11 | 0:09:17
but when you're travelling first class like this, why rush? | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
If you're a sengi, a guillemot chick or a baby baboon, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:30
getting around can be tricky. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
See you next time. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35 |
