0:00:420:00:45

Hello. I'm Andy.

0:00:500:00:52

And this is a baby snake. It's called a python.

0:00:520:00:55

And they don't have legs, so to get around, they slither.

0:00:550:01:01

And they slither using these fantastic scales,

0:01:010:01:05

which grip the ground.

0:01:050:01:07

They have very strong muscles in their tummy

0:01:070:01:10

to help them move forward.

0:01:100:01:12

All over the place, wild baby animals are on the move.

0:01:120:01:16

First up, let's take a trip to Tanzania in Africa.

0:01:170:01:22

Here's an animal that's very fast on its feet,

0:01:220:01:25

but blink and you'll miss it.

0:01:250:01:27

What? Hey, where did it go?

0:01:270:01:30

Ah, there she is.

0:01:300:01:32

This is a sengi, sometimes called an elephant shrew.

0:01:320:01:39

I can't think why with that trunk-like nose!

0:01:390:01:42

She's caring for her baby, which means lots of feeding.

0:01:480:01:53

Drinking milk can be pretty tricky with such a big nose, though.

0:01:530:01:58

Her baby is only a few weeks old,

0:01:580:02:01

but like all sengi, she's born to run.

0:02:010:02:04

And already she's almost as fast as Mum.

0:02:080:02:11

Their powerful back legs make sengi

0:02:140:02:16

one of the fastest small mammals in the world.

0:02:160:02:19

To help her speed around, she's even built her own racetrack.

0:02:210:02:26

Neeeow!

0:02:260:02:27

Neeeow! Neeeow!

0:02:280:02:30

Neeeow! Neeeow!

0:02:320:02:34

And it's the perfect place to go hunting for tasty bugs.

0:02:340:02:39

Got ya!

0:02:410:02:42

To make sure nothing trips her up,

0:02:440:02:47

she has to keep her racetrack clear of twigs and leaves.

0:02:470:02:52

Go on, get out of it.

0:02:520:02:53

It's so important, she spends half a day every day doing this.

0:02:560:03:01

Imagine having to tidy your room for half a day! Boring!

0:03:010:03:05

It's worth it, though, for a sengi,

0:03:070:03:10

because as well as helping her find food,

0:03:100:03:13

a clean racetrack also helps stop her from becoming food.

0:03:130:03:18

This monitor lizard has its eye on our sengi.

0:03:180:03:21

Good luck, Mr Lizard.

0:03:210:03:23

I hope you've got your running shoes on.

0:03:230:03:26

Ho-ho! Talk about fast food!

0:03:290:03:32

The monitor lizard is much bigger, but our little sengi is agile

0:03:340:03:39

and knows every twist and turn of this racetrack.

0:03:390:03:42

Er, you can stop running now.

0:03:550:03:57

It looks like the poor old monitor lizard has run out of puff.

0:04:000:04:04

ANDY SIGHS

0:04:040:04:07

Well done, sengi.

0:04:120:04:16

Next, we're off to the top of the world - the Arctic.

0:04:170:04:21

For some babies, getting around doesn't involve any running at all.

0:04:220:04:26

These young guillemot chicks need a good head for heights

0:04:290:04:33

as soon as they're born,

0:04:330:04:35

because for the first few weeks of their life,

0:04:350:04:38

they live here on these spectacular cliffs.

0:04:380:04:42

It's a very popular spot for guillemot families.

0:04:440:04:48

There are 100,000 birds here.

0:04:510:04:54

Halfway up a cliff may be a scary place for you or me to live,

0:04:550:04:59

but it's a very safe place for a guillemot chick,

0:04:590:05:02

away from arctic foxes and other predators.

0:05:020:05:06

They can't stay here for ever, though.

0:05:080:05:11

Winter is on the way and the guillemots need to move on,

0:05:110:05:15

which is a bit of a problem.

0:05:150:05:17

The chicks are still very young,

0:05:190:05:22

and their stubby wings are too short for flying,

0:05:220:05:25

but maybe they can glide.

0:05:250:05:27

If the chicks can make it to the sea, they'll be safe,

0:05:300:05:34

but from up here, it looks like an awfully long way down!

0:05:340:05:38

ANDY GULPS

0:05:380:05:39

Ohh! This chick doesn't look too sure about this.

0:05:410:05:45

Here goes!

0:05:450:05:47

Oh!

0:05:470:05:49

Ohhhhh!

0:05:510:05:53

Oh! Oh!

0:05:530:05:55

Uhh! Ha! Made it.

0:05:560:05:59

Phew! It's OK.

0:05:590:06:01

But with that arctic fox there,

0:06:020:06:04

it looks like it's going to have to do some running.

0:06:040:06:08

Go on, quickly!

0:06:080:06:10

Let's see how the next chick does.

0:06:110:06:15

There's the grown-up behind giving it some encouragement.

0:06:150:06:18

Go on. You can do it.

0:06:180:06:21

One, two, three...

0:06:210:06:23

Geronimo!

0:06:230:06:25

And, look! The grown-up's in the backseat shouting directions.

0:06:290:06:33

Looking good!

0:06:330:06:34

Oh! Oof!

0:06:360:06:39

Bit of a belly flop there, but...made it.

0:06:390:06:42

And so have all its friends, too.

0:06:450:06:48

Brilliant. Good job, everyone.

0:06:480:06:51

0:06:520:06:56

Now we're off to Botswana in Africa.

0:06:560:06:59

Sometimes even land animals need to know how to get about in the water.

0:07:020:07:07

This adorable fellow is a chacma baboon baby.

0:07:090:07:13

They spend most of their life on dry land.

0:07:150:07:18

Ahh, look at him!

0:07:200:07:22

But once a year, the Okavango River overflows with rain

0:07:220:07:28

and lots of animals come to feast on the fresh new plants

0:07:280:07:32

that grow on the flood plains.

0:07:320:07:34

Buffalo.

0:07:380:07:39

Antelope.

0:07:410:07:43

Even elephants.

0:07:450:07:47

And if the baboons want their share of the yummy plants,

0:07:500:07:54

well, they just have to wade in, too.

0:07:540:07:58

Luckily, baboons can walk upright on two feet, just like us,

0:07:580:08:02

which leaves their hands free to pick the tastiest shoots.

0:08:020:08:06

And the odd flower.

0:08:080:08:10

The grown-ups make it look easy,

0:08:130:08:16

but for the young baboons, it takes a bit of practice.

0:08:160:08:20

Don't go too deep, little one.

0:08:250:08:28

This very young baboon has a different way of getting around,

0:08:320:08:36

although it seems like it's still getting wet.

0:08:360:08:40

Maybe it's time to try a piggyback.

0:08:400:08:42

That's better. And it can do a little grazing itself.

0:08:440:08:48

Ooh! What's Mum got?

0:08:490:08:52

Ohhh!

0:08:520:08:53

It's a juicy snail.

0:08:530:08:56

Mm!

0:08:560:08:58

Hm... Lovely(!)

0:08:580:09:00

Soon this baby will learn how to wade through the water on its own,

0:09:110:09:17

but when you're travelling first class like this, why rush?

0:09:170:09:21

If you're a sengi, a guillemot chick or a baby baboon,

0:09:250:09:30

getting around can be tricky.

0:09:300:09:33

See you next time.
