Action. Hello, I'm Aidan and this is my mum.

0:00:170:00:23

-Hello.

-This is my brother.

-Hello.

0:00:230:00:26

-And this is my scary dad.

-Hello.

0:00:260:00:29

And this is where we all live.

0:00:290:00:31

-'Aidan and Ethan are brothers from Cambridge who have a unique relationship.'

-You all right?

0:00:360:00:41

'Ten-year-old Aidan has a form of dwarfism which affects his height and movement.

0:00:410:00:47

'He has inherited this bone condition from his mum, Michelle.'

0:00:470:00:51

The best thing about being smaller than everyone else

0:00:510:00:55

is that you can fit down the back of the sofa,

0:00:550:00:59

and it's handy for when you're playing hide and seek and things,

0:00:590:01:04

cos you can hide where everyone else can't.

0:01:040:01:06

While his dad works away from home, 14-year-old Ethan often has to cook,

0:01:060:01:11

do the housework and care for his mum and brother.

0:01:110:01:14

Ethan, can I have a drink?

0:01:140:01:17

Sometimes I am annoyed with looking after and doing jobs,

0:01:170:01:21

but I just have to do it and that's life.

0:01:210:01:24

Michelle and Aidan are shorter than average, so some people

0:01:240:01:27

see them as unusual and make fun of their appearance.

0:01:270:01:30

People at my old school used to take the Mick, like calling my mum a midget and Oompa Loompa.

0:01:300:01:36

And because his family is seen as being different,

0:01:360:01:38

Ethan has been severely bullied by other children to the point where he's had to change schools.

0:01:380:01:44

Both boys face very different personal challenges this year.

0:01:440:01:48

After an operation to straighten his legs, Aidan has to learn how to walk again.

0:01:490:01:54

Will he achieve his ambition of walking up the stairs at home completely by himself?

0:01:540:01:58

And will Ethan be able to put the bullying behind him, and fit in at his new school?

0:01:580:02:04

If I had to describe Aidan in three words it would be

0:02:130:02:16

cheeky, loud and full of big words.

0:02:160:02:21

He would describe me as irritating...

0:02:220:02:25

..like a mouse in the skirting board.

0:02:260:02:28

That's not fair.

0:02:310:02:32

The best thing about having a brother

0:02:340:02:37

is that you get to boss him about, and if I didn't I wouldn't be able to do anything when Dad's not here.

0:02:370:02:44

I'm a support worker for adults with learning disabilities

0:02:440:02:49

and my shifts range from early mornings to 9:30pm,

0:02:490:02:56

which means Ethan has to do things

0:02:560:02:58

that not every child has to do for his family.

0:02:580:03:01

I've been going for quite a long time for my mum and my brother.

0:03:120:03:15

I think it was since the age of eight or nine.

0:03:150:03:19

It ranges from day to day obviously, depending on how I am.

0:03:190:03:23

But he can cook meals, he empties and reloads the dishwasher.

0:03:230:03:27

He's very handy round the house.

0:03:270:03:29

Ethan, what's it like to care for your mum?

0:03:310:03:35

You've given me a bit of a difficult question.

0:03:350:03:37

Just say what you feel.

0:03:370:03:40

It's quite hard...

0:03:400:03:42

To know that I do more than any of my other friends...

0:03:420:03:48

looking after my mum and you.

0:03:480:03:53

It makes you quite handy as well though,

0:03:530:03:56

thinking of all the things you do.

0:03:560:03:58

-It will be all right when I'm older.

-You'll be set up for when you move out!

0:03:580:04:02

When Ethan needs a break, he goes out to his local Young Carers' group

0:04:080:04:12

where other children who look after their families can get together and relax.

0:04:120:04:17

I like being friends with Warren

0:04:170:04:20

because we can talk about our families and not be worried about what they think.

0:04:200:04:27

People at school just don't understand what

0:04:270:04:30

your mum's or some of your family's going through

0:04:300:04:33

and unless you tell them the whole story they won't understand.

0:04:330:04:36

People at my old school used to take the mick, like calling my mum a midget and Oompa Loompa.

0:04:370:04:43

I've found out not to tell anyone at school.

0:04:430:04:46

Over the years I've had quite a bit of bullying. In my old school.

0:04:460:04:51

How it started is they'd ask why my mum was small and I'd tell them

0:04:510:04:56

that she was born with a bone condition and...

0:04:560:05:00

they just thought it was funny cos she was small.

0:05:000:05:05

And then it just got worse and me, like, protecting myself,

0:05:050:05:09

shouting back, and then it started to get physical.

0:05:090:05:12

I found it quite hard with them bullying me cos I didn't know

0:05:120:05:16

how to take it and I used to not be able to go to school.

0:05:160:05:19

I did have anger management.

0:05:190:05:22

I couldn't really take it and one time I got rushed into hospital because I hit a window,

0:05:220:05:27

taking my anger out on the window,

0:05:270:05:30

cos I didn't want to hit anyone else.

0:05:300:05:33

At the height of the bullying, Ethan was walking with his mum when he was attacked in the street.

0:05:360:05:41

Me and Mum were walking back from a party and a boy just walked up to us and started shouting.

0:05:430:05:49

He then pushed me off my bike

0:05:490:05:54

and I hurt my knee and my hand,

0:05:540:05:58

and he started hitting me and kicking me,

0:05:580:06:02

asking me who I was.

0:06:020:06:04

I didn't reply

0:06:040:06:06

and he retaliated more.

0:06:060:06:08

I managed to get away on my bike

0:06:100:06:13

and he threw a glass bottle at me and it hit me in the back.

0:06:130:06:18

And then broke in front of me.

0:06:210:06:24

And then...

0:06:240:06:26

I phoned the police and they came about two minutes later.

0:06:260:06:31

It was a very scary night.

0:06:330:06:35

Yeah.

0:06:350:06:37

After I got attacked I had to go to court and I had to give evidence of what happened on the night.

0:06:370:06:43

I was quite frightened of seeing the guy in court.

0:06:430:06:47

But luckily I had a video link.

0:06:480:06:51

On a scale of one to ten, I think confidence-wise I'm about six.

0:06:510:06:58

During the bullying, it would probably be about two.

0:06:580:07:03

Now that Ethan has told his story in court, he faces a long wait to find out the court's sentence.

0:07:030:07:09

Ethan and his parents have decided he needs a fresh start to get away from the bullies.

0:07:130:07:18

To build up his confidence at his new school, Ethan is learning how to DJ.

0:07:180:07:23

OK, so we've been asked to put on an event, and it's a big event

0:07:230:07:26

that we're going to hold in the hall for end of term.

0:07:260:07:29

This time we're going to do a club DJ event.

0:07:290:07:33

How are we going to make that more exciting? Ethan.

0:07:330:07:36

-Use different effects like scratching and mixing.

-That's it,

0:07:360:07:41

you're going to engage the audience through your music.

0:07:410:07:45

Aidan faces a very different challenge.

0:07:450:07:47

Aidan and I both have the same bone condition.

0:07:490:07:52

Aidan and Michelle have a condition called skeletal dysplasia in which their bones don't develop properly.

0:07:520:08:00

It affects all our joints and it's a curvature of the spine which Aidan

0:08:000:08:04

has had corrected, and also all the long bones are curved as well.

0:08:040:08:10

The other operation Aidan's had is to straighten his legs.

0:08:100:08:16

And...

0:08:160:08:18

What's it like to be small?

0:08:190:08:21

I've always been small, obviously, so...

0:08:210:08:26

it's hard to say.

0:08:260:08:27

It's very annoying with things like cash point machines,

0:08:270:08:30

when you can't reach to get your own money out of the wall.

0:08:300:08:34

It used to bother me a bit when I was younger, didn't like always being the smallest,

0:08:340:08:39

but yeah, it's not too bad being small, really.

0:08:390:08:43

What's it like having a son the same as you?

0:08:430:08:46

I used to feel a bit guilty that I'd obviously been the one who'd given you the condition,

0:08:460:08:52

but...

0:08:520:08:53

you are a lovely boy and you've got a brilliant life,

0:08:530:08:57

and you get on with things as well, like I do.

0:08:570:09:00

This is my favourite book and it's called

0:09:020:09:07

Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide.

0:09:070:09:09

And I like it because it's got lots of

0:09:120:09:16

creatures and things.

0:09:160:09:18

And there's a sprite,

0:09:180:09:21

a knocker, it's very creepy.

0:09:210:09:24

Here is a dragon.

0:09:240:09:26

This is my favourite,

0:09:280:09:30

cos he's a bit like me, and he makes lovely jewellery, and it's a dwarf.

0:09:300:09:35

Aidan is desperate to regain his independence and walk upstairs by himself,

0:09:370:09:41

and so he has to undergo intensive treatment to build up the strength in his legs.

0:09:410:09:47

Push through your legs, good boy.

0:09:470:09:50

'He is certainly pushing much better through his legs and he's moving'

0:09:500:09:55

much better with his elbow crutches so he's progressing really well.

0:09:550:10:00

Big step from just last week.

0:10:000:10:02

So just to recap, Aidan, the short-term goal

0:10:020:10:06

is for you to walk upstairs to your room without any walking aid.

0:10:060:10:12

And then for next year, the aim is for you to go out and play football.

0:10:120:10:18

That'll be fab, won't it?

0:10:180:10:22

But the next stage in the treatment means that Aidan

0:10:250:10:28

will have to confront one of his biggest fears.

0:10:280:10:31

'Working in the pool would be easier for Aidan at this stage

0:10:310:10:35

because of the buoyancy of the water, so it will support his weight

0:10:350:10:39

a little bit better than working in the gym.

0:10:390:10:42

There is hydrotherapy planned for Aidan,

0:10:420:10:45

but he's petrified of water due to the fact that he had

0:10:450:10:49

a tracheostomy - which is a breathing tube in the neck -

0:10:490:10:53

a few years ago, which means he couldn't go in water.

0:10:530:10:58

-I don't want to.

-Do you know what, you have to.

0:10:580:11:02

It's going to be quite a big hurdle for him to get over that.

0:11:020:11:05

Ethan has been trying to support Aidan at the hospital and at home

0:11:050:11:09

but Aidan doesn't always want his brother's help.

0:11:090:11:12

Aidan had a fall this morning. He slipped while using his crutches,

0:11:120:11:16

which upset him quite a bit, and then Ethan was trying to help him get up off the floor.

0:11:160:11:23

And Aidan kind of took it out on Ethan, even though it wasn't Ethan's fault.

0:11:230:11:29

We just started shouting and having a go at each other.

0:11:290:11:32

And after a while he did let Ethan pick him and up and put him in his wheelchair,

0:11:320:11:38

but he was in quite a bad mood for a quite a bit of the time till we got to school, really.

0:11:380:11:44

It can be a bit frustrating when

0:11:480:11:51

I want to do something myself but Ethan comes and helps.

0:11:510:11:56

Sometimes it can be good because you don't have to do everything

0:11:560:12:01

when you can't sort of do it yourself.

0:12:010:12:05

That's the first beat of the bar and that's what we're always looking for as a club DJ...

0:12:050:12:10

'But Ethan has his own problems too.

0:12:100:12:12

'It's just two weeks till the Club night and his solo DJ spot.

0:12:120:12:17

'Will he ready in time?'

0:12:170:12:19

'When you're mixing you've got to make sure the speed is the same

0:12:190:12:23

'and you got to make sure you cue up the tracks.'

0:12:230:12:30

And then we have to scratch or mix it in with different songs.

0:12:300:12:36

Me and Harry talk about the event quite a lot, planning out

0:12:360:12:39

what songs we are going to play how we're going to play them.

0:12:390:12:44

The challenge for Ethan is finding five or six suitable tracks for his audience to listen to,

0:12:440:12:49

finding a creative way to mix one into the other

0:12:490:12:51

and hopefully satisfying his year group in the process.

0:12:510:12:55

I think they've probably got quite good reason to be nervous.

0:12:550:12:58

'If I'd been DJ-ing just a few weeks then I'd be feeling nervous as well. But nerves are definitely'

0:12:580:13:03

a good thing when it comes to performance. That means they care about what they do.

0:13:030:13:07

I'll probably play fast and beaty music, Harry plays the older kind of music.

0:13:070:13:13

# I don't want another pretty face I don't want just anyone to hold

0:13:130:13:19

# I don't want my love to go to waste

0:13:190:13:21

# I want you and you're beautiful So you're the one I want to chase

0:13:210:13:27

# You're the one I want to hold... #

0:13:270:13:31

'Harry's a good friend. He's funny.

0:13:310:13:33

'He embarrasses me a few times.'

0:13:330:13:36

These are the tracks I'm going to be doing on the disco on Wednesday.

0:13:470:13:52

Ethan has to run his final selection of tracks past his fiercest critic, his brother.

0:13:520:13:57

-You don't like it?

-It's rubbish. It sounds like the record's stuck.

0:13:570:14:00

Cool.

0:14:000:14:03

That's wicked.

0:14:030:14:05

All right!

0:14:050:14:06

This is where we get all the audience on the dance floor, dancing.

0:14:080:14:14

'Aidan is coming to the club night. How will Ethan's new classmates react to

0:14:170:14:22

'seeing his brother for the first time? And will it lead to a repeat

0:14:220:14:26

'of the bullying he suffered at his last school?'

0:14:260:14:28

Boring!

0:14:280:14:30

I'm feeling all right about Aidan coming in, cos maybe they'll understand

0:14:300:14:34

what he's like and how he is.

0:14:340:14:36

I'm a DJ!

0:14:360:14:38

I think the worst thing about it going wrong is me messing up,

0:14:410:14:45

when I've got an audience and if they're jumping about and then I mess it up and it stops...

0:14:450:14:52

they all boo

0:14:520:14:53

and don't like it.

0:14:530:14:55

# Electrify my body and you're making me feel like I'm so electric

0:14:550:14:59

# Everything you do... #

0:14:590:15:00

Ethan and his friends have come to see top club DJ N-Type

0:15:000:15:04

to get some advice on mixing tracks for their event.

0:15:040:15:06

-What inspired you to be a DJ?

-A love of music, really.

0:15:060:15:09

I love playing tunes and wanted to interact with the music and basically play to people and get the vibe.

0:15:090:15:16

Do you have to have a big personality to be a DJ?

0:15:160:15:19

I think it's most important to play the music you want to play and play it the way you want to play it.

0:15:190:15:24

'Ethan and Harry have learned the basics of how to mix from one track into another at school.

0:15:240:15:30

'DJ N-Type will show them how to use special effects to make their mixes more dynamic.'

0:15:300:15:34

I'll cue the tune and then you can do the effects on the filter and then we'll do

0:15:340:15:38

some bass juggles as well cos this tunes got a nice bit of bass that comes in on the intro.

0:15:380:15:43

If you take the bass down, I'll take the bass up on this mix, yeah?

0:15:430:15:46

Now you can do the bass lines on here.

0:16:010:16:04

So if you turn that one down, I'll turn this one up. This one.

0:16:040:16:08

Ready? Now.

0:16:080:16:10

Wicked, that made a nice little blend at the end.

0:16:130:16:17

It was really exciting to meet DJ N-Type. I really enjoyed it.

0:16:170:16:22

It has inspired me to be a DJ when I'm older.

0:16:220:16:26

-We're all quite nervous about the disco.

-I'm not.

0:16:260:16:31

Ethan has to leave his rehearsals to help Aidan, who has outgrown his old wheelchair

0:16:350:16:40

and wants the family to help him choose a new one.

0:16:400:16:42

-Hi, Michelle, I'm Barry.

-Pleased to meet you.

-And you.

0:16:420:16:47

-Hi, Aidan.

-Hello.

0:16:470:16:49

-All right, mate?

-Yeah.

-Jolly good.

0:16:490:16:52

Shake my hand. School boy error. MICHELLE LAUGHS

0:16:520:16:54

-Right, so we'll look at the day chair today?

-Yeah.

0:16:540:16:58

You can get really cool wheelchairs.

0:16:580:17:01

When I was first in a wheelchair we had wheelchairs that weren't so cool, then they brought out

0:17:010:17:06

the modern ultra light wheelchairs, which revolutionised peoples' lives.

0:17:060:17:10

You've got to be practical obviously,

0:17:100:17:13

and meet your needs, but being cool...

0:17:130:17:15

It's vital, absolutely. Especially when you're an Arsenal supporter.

0:17:150:17:21

Right, it's torture time.

0:17:270:17:29

Cool!

0:17:390:17:41

-I like it.

-You're getting faster.

0:17:550:17:57

It's really light.

0:17:570:18:00

I want to buy the shop.

0:18:110:18:12

You can if offer me the right money you can, and I can retire then.

0:18:120:18:16

-How much?

-Oh, a couple of million would do it. MICHELLE LAUGHS

0:18:160:18:19

I've only go 120.

0:18:190:18:21

What, 120 million?

0:18:210:18:23

-No, £120.

-What do you think they'll think of your wheelchair at school?

-Wicked.

0:18:230:18:29

-It would make your life easier, wouldn't it?

-A lot of people spend their money on cars,

0:18:290:18:34

I'll spend all my money on a wheelchair.

0:18:340:18:36

'Although, with luck, Aidan won't be using his new chair as much.

0:18:530:18:56

'After another physio session, he's a lot more confident on his crutches.'

0:18:560:19:00

Do you want to go and get the newspaper for me?

0:19:000:19:02

I think that's been delivered.

0:19:020:19:04

Well done, you.

0:19:180:19:21

You're getting good at that, aren't you? Shall I take that from you?

0:19:210:19:25

Thank you very much. Well done.

0:19:250:19:27

Are you worn out now?

0:19:270:19:29

And that's a wrap!

0:19:290:19:32

But the stairs he so badly wants to climb are, for now, still too steep for him to manage.

0:19:320:19:37

So he has to take the lift instead.

0:19:370:19:40

Hello.

0:19:420:19:44

In order to achieve his goal, Aidan has to face his biggest fear, the hydrotherapy pool.

0:20:050:20:11

To start with he was very, very nervous,

0:20:160:20:20

clinging to the side of the pool and didn't want to get in.

0:20:200:20:23

Lots of kicking.

0:20:280:20:31

Once he was in there and he felt secure because I was in the pool with him,

0:20:350:20:39

I think the next few sessions will boost his confidence immensely.

0:20:390:20:44

I want you to turn round and put your bottom on there. Well done.

0:20:580:21:03

Shall we book another session next week?

0:21:050:21:07

'When I got in the pool for the first time,'

0:21:100:21:13

I was very worried before I was going to go in it.

0:21:130:21:18

But then afterwards

0:21:180:21:20

I didn't want to get out again.

0:21:200:21:22

'The biggest test for Aidan now is whether he can walk down the steps unaided.'

0:21:220:21:26

You can sit down on that step can't you? That step you're on...

0:21:310:21:36

You can sit down.

0:21:360:21:38

Well done. Very good.

0:21:400:21:42

Then turn round onto there.

0:21:420:21:45

You're in.

0:21:470:21:49

Don't fall through the hole.

0:21:490:21:51

Ethan's first big challenge at his new school is still to come.

0:21:590:22:03

It's a few short hours before Club Night,

0:22:030:22:04

and just time to make his final preparations for the gig.

0:22:040:22:09

-Nervous?

-Yeah.

0:22:090:22:11

Why?

0:22:110:22:13

You've done it once before.

0:22:130:22:15

Yeah, I know.

0:22:150:22:18

I've done a Shakespearian monologue on here before.

0:22:180:22:21

I'm a Shakespearian actor, I think you can do some... black banging beats, lads.

0:22:210:22:27

Ethan's quite nervous - he hasn't been on the stage much before, and his name's on the poster.

0:22:280:22:33

'It's quite a big thing for him tonight.'

0:22:330:22:35

I'm feeling quite nervous about the audience watching and listening.

0:22:350:22:39

Aidan's coming along a bit later, so I think that will make me less nervous.

0:22:390:22:45

I think Ethan's going to be nervous about doing the DJ-ing tonight

0:22:470:22:51

because he's going to be doing it in front of all his friends.

0:22:510:22:54

It's more pressure for Ethan because Mum and Dad will be watching.

0:22:540:22:57

How are the levels for you, guys, are you OK up there?

0:22:570:23:01

The whole school has turned out for the club night. Harry plays the first set

0:23:060:23:11

and warms up the crowd.

0:23:110:23:13

# Baby, you're all that I want When you're lying here... #

0:23:130:23:18

Michelle, Lee and Aidan arrive, waiting for Ethan's big moment.

0:23:180:23:21

# I'm finding it hard to believe We're in heaven... #

0:23:210:23:24

Ethan comes on stage and plays his first track.

0:23:240:23:27

It's time for Ethan's crucial first mix.

0:23:300:23:34

Will he get the timing right?

0:23:340:23:36

MUSIC: "I need air" by Magnetic Man

0:23:390:23:43

With the crowd cheering him on, Ethan feels confident enough to invite his special guest on stage.

0:23:550:24:01

How will Ethan's classmates react to seeing Aidan for the first time?

0:24:010:24:06

# You're makin' it hard for me I need air...

0:24:060:24:09

# I need air... #

0:24:090:24:14

CHEERING

0:24:190:24:20

THEY CHANT: Ethan!

0:24:340:24:36

The boys have gone down a storm and Michelle is really proud of her sons' achievements.

0:24:360:24:41

It's quite scary but once Aidan came on I really enjoyed it.

0:24:410:24:45

It really helped me when I was helping him

0:24:450:24:49

and I weren't scared no more.

0:24:490:24:51

Ethan did a good job...ish.

0:24:510:24:54

Ish?!

0:24:540:24:56

Ethan has made a great start at his new school,

0:24:560:24:58

but he is still finding it hard to put the attack behind him.

0:24:580:25:01

But now Michelle has had a telephone call from the court where Ethan had to give evidence.

0:25:030:25:08

He is about to find out how the court has sentenced his attacker.

0:25:080:25:12

They said he could either have a tag and/or a curfew.

0:25:120:25:16

He's got 80 hours of community service, which is unpaid work.

0:25:160:25:21

If you think about that, 80 hours is quite a lot, isn't it?

0:25:210:25:25

He's also got a 24-hour attendance centre order,

0:25:250:25:29

which is basically like school at the weekends,

0:25:290:25:33

and he's got to pay £100 compensation to you.

0:25:330:25:37

Finally, Ethan can put the attack behind him and move on.

0:25:370:25:43

It's over.

0:25:430:25:44

The advice I'd give someone who's getting bullied

0:25:470:25:50

is to tell someone and not suffer in silence.

0:25:500:25:53

After another successful hydrotherapy session in the pool,

0:25:530:25:57

Aidan feels ready to tackle his personal goal.

0:25:570:26:01

He wants to attempt to climb the stairs completely on his own,

0:26:010:26:04

even though it is a month before he was expected to be fit enough.

0:26:040:26:08

Has he set himself too hard a challenge?

0:26:080:26:11

-Are you going to give it a go up the stairs, Aidan?

-Yeah.

0:26:130:26:15

Go on, then.

0:26:150:26:17

-You OK?

-Yeah.

0:26:240:26:25

Aidan is only halfway there and already he is struggling and out of breath.

0:26:330:26:37

Well done.

0:26:430:26:45

Come on,

0:26:470:26:48

nearly there.

0:26:480:26:50

-Tiring?

-Yes.

0:26:570:27:00

-That good?

-Hard.

0:27:060:27:09

When I climbed up the stairs I felt really proud and happy with myself.

0:27:110:27:16

Aidan's done it and no-one could be more proud than his big brother.

0:27:160:27:23

I'd like to play football next.
