Today we're in Canterbury to meet Ashley and her pets.

-They're donkeys, aren't they?

They're beautiful. Which one's Bill and which one's Ben?

That one's Bill and that one's Ben.

And how can you tell the difference between Bill and Ben?

-Because Ben's lighter than Bill.

-And what's their colouring called?

-Skewbald.

-Skewbald! That's a funny name, isn't it?

-Yeah.

And whose donkeys are they?

-My friend's.

-And you just look after them?

-Yes.

Ashley is really lucky, because even if you don't have a pet

of your own, it can be great fun to help out with a friend's.

So, Ashley, what age are Ben and Bill?

Ben's five and Bill's seven.

-So they're still quite young, aren't they?

-Yes.

Some donkeys can live up to 40 years old.

-They kind of look a little bit like horses, don't they?

-Yeah.

What's the difference between donkeys and horses?

-Donkeys have longer ears than horses.

-They do.

And their tails are different and are a bit shorter than horses.

They are a little bit smaller, aren't they?

So what's your favourite thing about Ben and Bill?

When they run round and round the fields

and when they're really friendly.

They are really friendly, aren't they?

Ben and Bill are such wonderful donkeys.

Rory, can you tell us some fun facts about our long-faced friends?

Of course, Fearne.

One.

Female donkeys are known as Jennies and males are called Jacks.

Two. Donkeys have hairs around their mouths to help them

feel where things are.

A bit like a cat's whiskers.

Three.

The ee-aw noise is called a bray.

It's really loud so they can call to each other from a long way away.

Like all pets, donkeys need lots of looking after.

So what do we have to do to look after Ben and Bill?

-Muck out their stables.

-And is this their stable here?

-Yes.

OK, come on.

Right. What do we do first?

-You have to get all the poo out of the stable.

-OK.

-Right. That's all the poo.

-What do we do next?

-Get all the dirty straw out.

-Let's go.

Wow!

What do we do now?

Put some new straw in it.

We put the donkeys in here at night so they can go to sleep.

That's really good.

It's very important for donkeys to have shelter to go into,

especially when it rains,

-because they don't have waterproof coats, do they?

-No.

-No.

-I think the donkeys will be very happy.

-Me too. What do we do now?

-Wash our hands.

-Good idea, come on.

Make sure they're nice and clean.

What do we do next?

-We feed them.

-OK. What do we feed them?

-We feed them donkey chaff.

-That sounds yummy.

-Yep.

-Where would you like to put that? On the grass?

-Just along here.

-OK.

-Like that?

-Yes.

-Do they eat anything else?

-They eat grass.

-Grass? Do they love it?

-Yes, they're just like lawn mowers.

They must really love grass then!

Donkeys also need water and Ben and Bill have a trough,

so they have fresh water whenever they want it.

-Right. I think we're ready. Should we call them over for some food?

-Yes.

-Ben!

-Bill!

Food! Yummy.

-Oh, they really like chaff, don't they?

-Yes.

When you feed donkeys, you have to have your hand flat, don't you?

Just so your fingers don't get nibbled.

-Good boy. Do you enjoy feeding them?

-Yes.

What else do you have to do to look after Ben and Bill?

We have to groom them.

-Should we do it now?

-I would love to!

Am I doing it right?

Yes. We have to brush them the way their fur's going.

Or else it might be a bit uncomfortable, wouldn't it? Yeah.

Bill is losing a lot of fur, here.

But it's all right, because when it's cold and during winter,

donkeys develop really, really long, shaggy coats to help keep them warm.

But as it's starting to get warmer, Bill is losing all his shaggy fur

and underneath he's got a really nice, sleek,

short coat to help keep him cool.

Do you like this, Bill?

I think he's enjoying it while eating his food.

So these donkeys have some yummy food, a nice clean stable,

and now they're being groomed.

-They're very happy donkeys.

-Yes.

It's now play time.

Some donkeys like to be ridden, but Ben and Bill aren't that used to it.

-So, Ashley, what do we do instead?

-We take them for a walk.

That sounds like so much fun!

-Let's get their lead ropes on.

-Sounds good to me.

You and me are going for a stroll. Come on, Ben.

I've had such a lovely walk. Thank you very much. They've been so good.

That is a great idea. What is their favourite treats?

-Carrots.

Bill and Ben are looking very busy, aren't they?

-They're always busy eating.

-Yes, they are. Hello.

If Bill and Ben were to have a job, what would their job be?

If Bill and Ben could do any job, they could be holiday guides.

They would fly on an aeroplane to Spain.

Then they would dress up in flamenco dresses.

Then they would do Spanish dancing to entertain all the guests.

And it will be a sun dance to make sure the sun stays out.

If you have a donkey, it's very important to keep them happy

and healthy and their feet need a lot of extra care and attention.

So what do we have to do to look after donkeys' feet?

We have to get a farrier.

A farrier is someone who looks after horses and donkeys' feet.

-And how often do you need to get this farrier?

-Every six weeks.

-That's pretty often, isn't it?

-Yeah.

And, in fact, the farrier is here today to show us what to do.

-Hi, David.

-Hi, Fearne. Hi, Ashley.

We're going to go and give Ben lots of attention

while he gets his hooves done.

-It looks like Ben's ready to go, isn't he?

-Yes.

What's the first thing that David has to do for Ben?

-Put all the mud off his feet.

-He does, doesn't he?

It's very important that their feet get cleaned every day

because they can get some mud and stones caught in them.

And it's not very nice. He's being very good so far, isn't he?

-Yes.

-Well done, Ben.

Ben and Bill are very happy, friendly donkeys

but we're on this other side of this fence to be safe.

-Is it looking good?

-Yep, that's all nice and clean now.

-All clean.

-What else does David have to do?

-Check if their feet are healthy.

-That's right, we have to check for cuts, don't we?

-Yes.

-Is the foot healthy?

-Yep, that seems all nice and clean and good to go.

We're just going to give the feet a bit of a trim.

-It looks like he's having a nail file.

-It does, doesn't it?

-He's going to have very pretty feet after, isn't he?

-Yes.

-And you have to do that for every single foot?

-Yes, indeed.

We need to clean this foot out as well,

-you can see there's lots of mud and muck in there.

-Ooh.

-He's been standing on dirty things, hasn't he?

-Yes.

-How do you think Ben is doing? Is he doing well?

-Yeah, he's very calm.
