-And I'm Rory. And we love animals!

I really, really like pigs. Oink!

They've got squishy noses and curly tails. What do you like?

-I love chickens.

-And the chicks - oh, they're so cute.

-They are, I love them too.

Some animals can make brilliant pets, and pets are great.

And we really like meeting you and your pets.

There are a few things, though, that pets need - care, exercise

and play time, my favourite. What fun are you up to?

Today we've come to Robin House in Scotland

to meet Abbie and her brother and sister, Sean and Robyn.

Robin House is a special place

where some children come with their families.

These children, like Abbie, need extra care because of an illness,

and here their families can relax and have loads of fun.

Where did you come from?

-Sorry.

-That's quite all right. I love dogs.

-Are you here visiting too?

-Yes. I'm Belle and this is Kerry

-and we're here to see Abbie.

-Pleased to meet you both.

-I'm here to see Abbie as well.

-Ah! Right.

-Can you show me the way?

-Sure.

-It's just through here.

-OK.

Kerry is a very special little dog called a therapy pet.

She's trained to visit many different children

who need some extra care and cuddles.

I can see why Abbie loves her so much, she's making me smile already.

So let's go and say hello.

-Hello, Robyn.

-Hello, Sean.

-Hello, Rory.

Is that your big sister Abbie? Hello. Now, Abbie...

we have brought someone here to see you.

She's small and furry and cuddly.

Who is it?

-Kerry.

-Kerry!

There we are, Abbie. OK.

How's that?

What a lovely dog Kerry is. What sort of dog is Kerry?

A Shih Tzu.

There are over 400 different breeds of dogs -

from Dalmatian to Labradors.

And Shih Tzus are one of the smallest breeds.

Their name actually means, "lion dog",

but you've got nothing to worry about,

because they're very cuddly, kind and caring dogs.

Which is why, I think, Abbie loves little Kerry so much.

What is Abbie's favourite thing about Kerry?

-That she's fluffy.

-She's fluffy. And she is super fluffy.

She's so soft. Oh, she's gorgeous.

Ferne, can you give us some furry facts about our new friend here?

Of course, Rory.

Any type of dog can be a therapy pet - big or small -

as long as they are calm and friendly.

Other types of animal can also be used as therapy pets.

Therapy pets help people in lots of different ways.

Stroking a dog can help to cheer you up if you feel sad or unwell.

Or calm you down if you feel angry.

Wonderful therapy pets like Kerry help all sorts of people -

young and old.

DOG BARKS

Caring for Kerry is very important while she's making Abbie happy.

Of course, she gets lots of love and care from Belle.

But there are still things we can do.

What do you guys do to look after Kerry while she's here?

-All sorts. Feed her.

-Walk her.

-Cuddle her.

-And brush her.

Perfect. Can I help you look after her today?

-BOTH: Yeah.

-Oh, excellent.

-So what do we need to do first?

-Brush her.

-Yeah.

-Now, is there anyone else who'd like to help us?

-Abbie.

Abbie can help us too. Perfect.

-I think she's liking all this attention, isn't she?

-Yeah.

Yes, aren't you, Kerry?

Brushing Kerry is one of Abbie's favourite things to do.

Kerry's just had a haircut,

but normally Shih Tzus have long, thick hair.

They need to be brushed every day

to make sure it doesn't get tangled or matted.

She's certainly looking nice and tidy now.

So what's next on our to-do list? Is it time for walkies?

Not yet. We have to put out food and water for later.

OK, come on.

-So, is this where Kerry gets fed when she comes to stay?

-Yeah.

And what have we got here for her?

Wet food, dry food and treats and water.

-What do need to do now then?

-Put the wet food into the bowl.

-OK.

Right, let's do that first then.

Your dog needs a well-balanced diet to stay healthy,

but Kerry only needs a wee bit of food as she's little.

How much you feed your dog depends on things like

how old they are, or how much exercise they get.

Remember not to give them too much.

They can become overweight and that's not healthy.

-Speaking of exercise, is it time for walkies?

-Yeah.

-Is there anything we need to do?

-Fill the water bottle for Kerry.

There we go. Marvellous.

Let's get this lovely little lid on.

And don't you think this is a brilliant little travel bottle?

It's great, isn't it? A little place for Kerry to drink from.

Perfect, isn't it? There you go - take hold of that.

-Now, tell me it's time to go for walkies.

-Yes.

Yes, I've been waiting for this.

I know Abbie and Sean are going to want to come with us.

I've got the lead here - let's go and get Kerry. Come on.

Exercise is so important when caring for dogs like Kerry.

They love to go for walks in the park

but Shih Tzus only have little legs, so a shorter walk is usually fine.

But that doesn't mean they're not fast.

Wait for me!

Abbie's come down to the park with Kerry.

Kerry loves exploring all the different parts of the park.

And Abbie loves the swings and the roundabout. Me?

I'm interested in the pirate ship.

Arr!

Ahoy, me hearties! Kerry's having a great time down there

playing with Abbie. And Abbie's having a fantastic time too.

I think it's time for a treat.

Giving your dog a treat is a great way to show them

how well they've been doing.

-Now, I heard that Kerry could do a trick for a treat.

-Yeah.

-Will you do that for me?

-Yeah.

Let's go one at a time.

-Kerry.

Oh, well done.

Isn't she clever?

-Mmm! Looks like she's enjoying that, doesn't it?

-Yes.

She's hungry after that walk.

Let's give you a wee wipe.

There we go, let's clean you up. Good lass.

Kerry's face needs washed every single day, just like ours.

It can get dirty after eating

and sometimes her eyes get a wee but teary.

A napkin or wet cloth is perfect for cleaning them.

I know something else that needs washed

-after we've touched our pets.

-Our hands.

That's right. Shall we do that now?

I am exhausted, and Abbie was too, by the looks of things.

-Yeah, she's having a lie down.

-That sounds like a very good idea.

And look - so is Kerry.

Wonder what she's dreaming about?

If Kerry could do anything in the world, what do you think she'd do?

If Kerry the dog could do anything, she would wear a pink dress.

With a big, curly black wig and flat shoes to dance in.

And she would travel to America

and dance with all her puppy pals to an Irish jig.

And then she would win all of the medals.

This is a very special room for Abbie to play in.

As you can see, it's filled with stars, disco balls, bubbles,

lights...

And it's got this very clever mat here as well,

which is very exciting.

It's interactive, which means... Look...

We can move the stars around.

Kerry loves running across it, which is awesome.

Today I met Abbie, Robyn and Sean, and their doggy friend Kerry.

Together they all groomed her and we got Kerry fresh food and water.

We went for a walk and played together in the garden.

We all watched Kerry show off her tricks.

Then we went into a special room, with magical star lights

and a big picture of Kerry.

That sounds like so much fun and you made some great friends.

I really did. And pets are great.

If you're going to touch an animal, get permission from the owner.

That's important. But one pet you can always play with is ours.
