I really, really like pigs.

They've got such squishy noses and curly tails.

Some animals make brilliant pets, and pets are great.

And we really like meeting you and your pets.

There are things that pets need like care, exercise

and playtime, which is my favourite. What are you up to today?

Oh, wow! You've got budgies!

-Yeah.

-When I was your age, I had budgies, too.

Oh, I love them, they're so nice. What's their names?

That one right up the back is Charlie

and the one next to Charlie is Lemonade.

That one there is Palma and that one's Tommy.

-Those are great names, aren't they?

-Yeah.

-Which one is your favourite?

-Do you think we could take one out and have a closer look?

-Yeah.

-Which one are we going to take out?

-Tommy.

OK. How do we get him out?

Some seeds. Ah, OK.

OK. What will I do with this?

You need to put it in the cage and pick Tommy up on there.

-Yeah.

Now, how do you know that Tommy is a boy?

-Because he's got blue bits on his beak.

-He does, doesn't he?

Boy budgies nearly always have a little blue bit

above their beak called a cere.

Girl budgies often have a brown one.

-Have any of your budgies got a little brown bit above their beak?

-Yeah.

-Palma.

-And that means that she is...

-A girl.

-Yes!

Well, Harrison, your budgies are wonderful.

about our new feathery friends, please?

The full name for budgies is budgerigars

and they originally came from Australia.

Budgies are very clever and can even learn to do special tricks.

Wow, look at that!

In the wild, budgies live in big groups and they migrate.

That means they fly to different areas for the summer and winter.

It's really important to make sure your pets are well looked after

and budgies are no different.

-How do you look after your budgies?

-By cleaning the cages every day.

-Perfect. Well, shall we do that now?

-Yeah.

-What do we do first?

-We clean all of this out.

OK, right, I'll help you do that.

Put this in the blue box.

Put the newspaper in there. Good work!

-I'm going to spray, you hand rub.

-Deal.

What are all these in the bottom of the cage?

-Poo. Budgie poo.

-Budgie poo. They poo a lot, don't they?

-Yeah.

With only four, there's hundreds of poo!

-And you cleaned this out just yesterday?

-Yeah.

We'll need to wash our hands after this!

-I think you've given me the hard job, haven't you?

-Yeah!

CAW MEOWS

What do we have to do now, Harrison?

-Get clean water so the budgies can drink.

-OK, Harrison.

There's fresh water here. You hold the bowl.

Put two hands on it and I'll pour it in.

There we go, that looks good.

Nice and carefully. OK.

Good work!

That is the water done.

So what do you feed the budgies?

Millet seeds, sunflower seeds, vegetables.

That sounds like a nice, varied diet, doesn't it? Lots to eat.

It's very important that your budgies have got fresh water and fresh food

at all times, and that you take out old food and old water every day.

Is there anything else we need to give them?

-Something to give them some calcium.

-Yes. Cuttlefish.

-Yes, cuttlefish.

-We've got cuttlefish here, don't we? Will you pop that in?

-Yeah.

Very good.

We get our calcium from things like milk and yoghurt

but budgies get some of theirs from cuttlefish.

Cuttlefish are also good for something else.

Budgies' beaks keep growing, just like our fingernails,

and by giving them something hard to gnaw on,

it means they can rub down their beaks till they're the right size.

DOG BARKS

So we've cleaned the cage and given the budgies some fresh food

-and water. Is it now time to have some fun?

-Yeah.

-What are we going to do?

-Play with the budgies.

I love this part of the day! It's my favourite time.

I can see you've got lots of budgie toys in there, which is fantastic.

It's very important to make sure your budgies have plenty of toys

to keep them occupied, otherwise they can become bored.

-But there's lots of toys here for Harrison's budgies.

-Yes.

-We've got a ball.

-And what's that for?

-Budgie football!

Oh, that sounds like fun. What other toys are in there?

Swings.

Where's the swings? Oh, I see, up at the top there.

And what's on this yellow and green swing here?

-A mirror.

-Oh, wow.

What do the budgies like to do with that?

Dance and swing and look in the mirror, all at the same time!

-Really?

-Yeah.

-Great.

So you've got loads of fun toys in there for the budgies.

-Shall we take the budgies out now and play with them?

-Yeah.

-Is he having a wee?

-No!

It's great that Harrison lets the budgies out

so often to have a good fly around, because they need lots of exercise.

Do you want to see me put Tommy on my head?

-Yes, please!

Hee-hee, that's amazing! He looks very happy up there.

-can copy the way humans speak?

Yeah, they can say "hello" or "how are you doing?" or "goodbye."

If Tommy could say anything, what would he say?

-"I love you."

-Aw, that's lovely, isn't it?

If Tommy could do anything, what do you think he'd do?

Erm...

If my budgies could do anything, they would be in a rock band.

Tommy would play on the drums,

Lemonade would play the trumpet,

Palma and Charlie would play the guitars!

They would come up with brilliant songs and would be world-famous!

Harrison, what is this?

-The aviary? It's amazing.

-So the buddies have got an outside house as well?

-Yeah.

-How old are your budgies?

-All of them are one, except Tommy.

Tommy is two today.

-Today? It's his birthday?

-Yeah.

Happy birthday, Tommy! How are we going to celebrate?

A birthday cake and a birthday party.

That's amazing.

We've got some ingredients here, are we going to make this birthday cake?

Yeah. First, we tip some of this in a bowl.

Today I met Harrison and his budgies.

We cleaned out their cage and watched them have great fun

playing with all their toys. It was Tommy the budgie's birthday,

so we made Tommy a birthday cake and had a special budgie birthday party

with Harrison's mum, little sister and all Tommy's budgie friends.

-That sounds wonderful and you made some great friends as well!

-Yeah.

Pets are great but remember, before you touch any animal,

make sure it's OK with the owner first.

That's right, but one pet you can play with is ours.
