and purring cats all make really good pets. And pets are great!

Today we are in Wolverhampton to meet Kayleigh and her pet.

Let's go and see who she wants us to meet. Come on.

-Oh, I can see a tank. Who lives in here then?

-My tortoise.

-Oh, I love tortoises. Is that a boy or girl?

-A boy.

-What's his name?

-Titch.

Hello, Titch. That is a marvellous name for tortoise.

-Oh, he's gorgeous. Do you know how old Titch is?

-19.

-Wow!

He's nearly as old as me.

Some tortoises can live for over 50 years.

-So what do you like most about Titch?

-When I hold him.

-Yes, shall we do that now?

-Yes.

-OK, let's do it.

-First we need to put our gloves on.

-Good idea. Here's your gloves.

And here's mine.

Tortoises can carry a bug, which doesn't hurt them but

can be bad for our tummies.

When you're handling a tortoise, put on some gloves.

When you finish, throw the gloves in the bin

and wash your hands with some antibacterial soap.

Hello, Titch. Look at you.

You're really good at holding him, aren't you?

You need to hold tortoises properly.

Look how Kayleigh's holding Titch.

Thumbs on top and fingers spread out underneath.

That makes sure that you won't drop him.

Should we put him on the ground?

Look at his shell.

That looks like chocolate and caramels, doesn't it?

Tortoises are interesting for all sorts of reasons.

Fearne, can you give us some tortoise-y facts, please?

Of course, Rory. One. Tortoises like Titch are quite small.

But some tortoises, like this one, are really big.

Two.

Look at this tortoise's mouth!

That hooked part is sometimes called a beak.

It helps it eat hard things like nuts and fruit.

Three.

Tortoises have been on the planet for a very long time.

They were even around at the time of the dinosaurs.

Care Time!

Caring for your pet is very important.

And Titch is no different from any other pet.

These bubbles are going to get these rocks nice and clean,

-aren't they?

-Yes.

Shiny and bright, I think that will make Titch very happy.

Tell me what the different rocks are for. What's this one I've got for?

-Swimming.

-Swimming? So does water go in here?

-Yes.

-He's looking very happy in his box there, isn't he?

-Yes.

-Right, that's nice and clean. You drying yours off?

-Yes.

-Thank you.

I'll dry that.

It's looking spotless, sparkling clean.

I'll take the tortoise back in his tank when we're all finished.

Let's go and do that and get them all back in the tank.

And let's see if Titch wants to explore.

It looks like Titch is really excited to have a soak, look!

There he goes. That was a nice swim.

Shall we give him something to eat now? Yeah.

-So is this apple a snack for me?

-The tortoise.

-Oh.

I guess he does need something to eat.

-Is apple one of his favourites?

-Yes.

-Oh, delicious.

-And what are you doing?

-I'm washing the dandelion leaves.

Nice, fresh leaves. Nice, fresh fruit.

We will only give Titch some of this fruit,

as too many sweet foods like this can be bad for tortoises.

-I think Titch is going to be very happy, don't you?

-Yeah.

-Shall we start making up a salad bowl here?

-Yeah.

What do we put in first?

-The strawberries.

-The strawberries.

Pass that over. We're going to put some tomatoes in, too?

Right, that looks almost done. What's missing?

-The Dandelion leaves.

-Yes, of course! How could I forget?

We only put a few on because the tortoise might get big.

That's right. We need to give him a nice, healthy, balanced diet.

-And there is something special that we need to add at the end.

-This.

This special powder.

And this special powder is for his shell, isn't it?

So, I'll sprinkle a little bit of this on. There we go.

-Right! Shall we go and see if he's hungry?

-Yes.

-OK.

-Where do we put the food then?

-In the tank.

Yeah. OK.

Look! Kayleigh, look at this.

Play Time!

Playing with your pets and giving them plenty of exercise

is just as important as caring for them.

-Do you like to play with Titch, Kayleigh?

-Yes.

-What sort of games do you like to play?

-Hide and seek.

Oh, I love hide and seek! Shall we play that now? Right, OK.

Found him! What a great game. Hello, I found you.

We have brought Titch out to the back garden to have a wee explore.

Tortoises have a very strong jaw and neck because they don't have teeth.

It allows them to tear and pull things,

just like these leaves down here.

Wow, I think Titch is enjoying exploring the garden, don't you?

-Yes.

-Shall we see how long it takes him to meet us at the Wendy house?

Come on, let's go.

-BOTH: Come on, Titch.

-Come on!

Come on, Titch.

-Titch, come here, get a move on.

-Come on!

-Why do you think he is so slow?

-Because of his shell.

Yes, their shell is very heavy, indeed.

That might sound like a bad thing, but actually, it keeps them safe.

When in danger they can pop their head, legs, tail

inside the shell.

Other animals have to run from danger to find a hiding place.

But tortoises carry a hiding place around with them on their backs.

Here he is! Well done, Titch.

That took a wee while, but you made it in the end.

So if he could do anything, what do you think he'd do?

If my pet Titch could do anything,

he would go out on his roller-skates, all the way to Curtain Land.

He would skate in and out of the curtains and hide behind some, too.

He would bring back purple curtains for his tank to shut at night.

We've come to Kayleigh's nursery to introduce Titch to some friends.

It was fantastic, wait till I tell you all about it.

Today I met Kayleigh and her tortoise Titch.

She showed me how she cleans out his bowls.

And Titch had a lovely swim in one of them.

We made him a yummy salad as a treat, then we played hide and seek.

Later, Titch explored the garden.

We took Titch to meet Kayleigh's friends and we made our very own

egg box tortoises.

That sounds like fun. You made some great friends, too.

I really did. And pets are great.

But if you're going to touch an animal,

get permission from the owner first.

One pet you can always play with is ours,
