I really, really like pigs and they've got such squishy noses

-and curly tails. What do you like?

-I love chickens.

-They are, I love them too.

Some animals can make brilliant pets and pets are great.

And we really like meeting you and your pets.

There are a few things, though, that pets need, like care, exercise

and playtime, which is my favourite. What fun things are you up to today?

Today, we are in Baldock to meet Kerris and her pet.

I wonder what it is. Let's go and find out, shall we?

Hello, Kerris!

-Hello, Rory.

-And who is this?

-Wendy.

-Wendy!

-Lovely dog, what sort of dog is she?

-She's a black Labrador.

A black Labrador, she's gorgeous, such soft ears.

What's the best thing about Wendy?

She just jumps on the trampoline and jumps over jumps.

Jumps over jumps as well? My goodness.

-She must have a lot of energy, then, does she?

-Yeah.

-Have you got a lot of energy as well then?

-Yeah.

-To bounce around with her?

-Yeah.

That's great fun. I've heard that Wendy is a very special dog.

-Is that right?

-Yes, it is.

What makes Wendy so special?

-Because she alerts.

-She alerts.

-And is the alert to help you?

-Yes.

Right.

Kerris has something called type 1 diabetes that can be dangerous and

make her poorly if she doesn't get the medicine that she needs.

Luckily for her, though, she's got a wonderful dog in Wendy, who

can go and alert her mum and let her know and she can get her medicine.

But how does she know?

-Because she sniffs me.

-She sniffs!

What does she sniff, your breath?

-Yes.

-Yes, she's very, very clever.

She uses this amazing nose of hers to smell

-changes in your breath, then?

-Yeah.

-She knows even before you do that you're going to be poorly?

-Yeah.

Clever dog, that's amazing!

Wow.

So Wendy's just run off and I think that means she's alerting.

Because of Wendy's fast action, Kerris' mummy can now give

Kerris the medicine to stop her from getting sick.

She really seems like part of the family, I think she's great.

Ferne, will you tell us some furry facts about

wonderful working dogs like Wendy?

Of course, Rory.

Dogs have a great sense of smell.

Some dogs are trained to sniff out things we can't smell.

Found it!

Dogs can help people in lots of different ways.

Some dogs are trained to guide people who are blind or can't see very well.

Other dogs help people who can't hear very well by alerting them

to sounds they need to know about.

Search and rescue dogs are trained to find people who've had

an accident or got lost somewhere.

What do you do to look after Wendy?

Feed her and give her water.

-OK, shall we do that now?

-Yeah.

-OK.

Water first.

Now, food time.

Oh, Wendy hasn't started eating her snack.

SHE BLOWS DOG WHISTLE

So what was that there, that whistle?

So she knows to eat her food.

-And do you always do that?

-Mm-hmm.

Every single time she eats?

Wendy is learning to respond to the whistle so Kerris

can use it to call her if she needs help.

Kerris, how else do you look after Wendy?

Grooming her.

Oh, give her a good brush, that's a great idea!

-Shall we do that now then?

-Yeah.

-Does she like it?

-Yeah.

Have you got a brush for me?

Ah, excellent, thank you.

Right, you show me what to do then.

Ah, brush from the top to the bottom.

OK, I'll do her head very gently.

It's really important to give your dog a good groom every now

and then to make their fur is nice, clean and healthy

and with no big knots in it.

Now, Wendy's only got short hair but some dogs have got longer hair

so it's even more important then to give them

a good brush from time to time and get all those knots out.

Do you think she's enjoying herself?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

Right, she's looking pretty good, isn't she?

Do you know what I think?

It's nice brushing but I think we're done.

I think it's time for some cuddles, what do you think?

Let's give her some cuddles.

We're all off for a walk in the woods.

We have the treats and we have the poo bags and of course,

Kerris' medicine kit.

Why is Wendy wearing this jacket?

So people know she's working.

Ah, it's very smart.

So you look after Wendy by feeding her and taking her for walks

-and she looks after you back.

-Yes.

That's great, isn't it?

Sounds like a very good deal to me.

Well, we're having a lovely walk here but I think it's playtime.

-What shall we play?

-Hide and seek.

Yes, I love hide and seek.

First of all, though, we need to take this jacket off

because we're going to be having fun now.

Are you going to go and hide?

Wendy is using her brilliant sense of smell to sniff out Kerris.

Phew, that was thirsty work!

Is this where Wendy sleeps?

Yes, she always sleeps in my bedroom with me.

And I bet she has lots of lovely dreams about

all sorts of adventures.

If Wendy could do anything, what do you think she'd do?

If my pet could do anything,

she would a fairy dog.

She would grow wings

and she would have a magic wand

and she would sprinkle fairy dust

over people that were poorly

and make them all better.

And her fairy dog name would be Sparkle.

It's really important that Kerris and Wendy get to know each other

really well to make it easier for Wendy to get Kerris the help that

she needs, so that's why they come to this special dog agility class.

It's also just really fun as well!

So, Kerris, what is your favourite thing to do here at

the dog agility class?

The weaves, the jumps and the tunnel.

-Yeah.

Oh, I think she's alerting. Here she comes with mum now.

That was amazing! Wendy was doing something completely different

and she still knew to go and get help for Kerris.

It was amazing, wait until I tell you all about it.

Today, I met Kerris and her amazing dog, Wendy.

Wendy helps Kerris by alerting her mum when Kerris could get poorly.

Kerris showed me how she takes care of Wendy by giving her

fresh food and water and by grooming her.

Then we took Wendy for a walk in the woods

and had lots of fun at an agility class.

That sounds wonderful and you made some great friends as well!

Yeah, pets are great, but remember,

before you touch any animal,

make sure it's OK with the owner first.

That's right, but one pet you can play with is ours!
