Today, we're in Edinburgh to meet Lily and her pet cat.

And who is in here? This must be your cat.

-That's Brody.

-Brody is absolutely gorgeous.

-You must love him very much.

-Yes.

-What do you love about him the most?

He sleeps in my arms and he's so playful.

-He sleeps IN your arms? That's SO sweet, isn't it?

-Yeah.

What a lovely cat. Now, do you know what sort of cat Brody is?

-He's a Ragdoll cat.

-Oh, of course he is, I thought so.

How can you tell that he's a Ragdoll?

Because he's very fluffy and he loves lots of cuddles.

Yes, he's got this long, long hair, a big bushy tail, and they're

very relaxed, so they're happier to be handled than other cats.

Loves a big cuddle, don't you? Yes, look at that lovely cuddle there.

It's very nice.

What else do all Ragdoll cats have?

-Blue eyes.

-Yes, big blue eyes.

Very nice indeed.

How old is Brody?

He's nearly one.

-Oh, so he's still very young.

-Yes.

He's very sweet-natured and very calm. That's nice.

And how do you get Brody's fur so soft?

I always brush him.

-Aw, do you? And keep all the muck out of that hair?

-Yeah.

Keep it nice and clean.

He looks fantastic. So, what are Brody's favourite things to do?

Looking out the window, playing with his toys, sleeping,

and using his scratching post.

-That is LOADS of things. Lots of cats love sleeping, don't they?

-Yeah.

Cats actually can sometimes sleep ALL day!

That's much more than you and I!

Ferne, can you give us some fun facts about our new feline friend?

'Of course, Rory!

'Ragdoll cats come in lots of different colours,

'like brown...

'white...

'and grey!

'Lots of Ragdoll kittens are born white

'and they get their colours as they start to grow up.

'Ragdoll cats tend to be very affectionate,

'and most of them love playtime and cuddles.

'Aww!'

Cats are amazing animals and, like most pets, need lots of love,

care and attention. How do you look after Brody?

I give him food, I give him water, I brush him

and I clean out his litter tray.

-So, you've got lots to do, then?

-Yeah.

What do we need to do first?

Clean out his litter tray, where he does the toilet.

Yes, I thought you were going to say that.

A bit of a stinky job but a very important one.

The cat won't go in a very dirty litter tray.

-What do we need to do first?

-First, we have to put on gloves.

Good idea. We should keep our hands nice and clean.

Right, gloves on.

-Now, I think we should take this lid off, shouldn't we?

-Yes.

-OK.

Get that out the way. Oh.

What are you doing?

-Oh, wow! That's where the scoop is?

-Yeah.

One of these bags, I'll pinch one of these.

Close that back up.

How often do you clean the litter tray?

Once a day but sometimes my mummy does it when I'm at school,

if there's anything in it.

That's a good idea, isn't it?

We use this scoop to scoop out the poo and we put it in this bag.

There's one there.

-Any more?

-No.

-Doesn't look like it.

If there's wet, we have to empty it all out and replace it.

-All of it?

-Yeah.

-OK, that looks nice and dry.

We don't have to change the litter today, do we?

Right, let me tie this up.

Put more litter in, so it's nice and fresh.

That looks good, doesn't it? There we go.

Now let's even all this out now.

-Great!

-Put the lid back on.

-Good thinking.

All done. Brody's going to be happy,

he's got a nice, clean, fresh litter tray.

We need to feed him, Rory.

OK, let's get these gloves off and wash our hands.

Most cats like to eat a variety of food.

Some have wet food, some have dry food, and some have both.

What does Brody like to eat?

He likes dry biscuits and wet food pouches,

and he gets treats sometimes, when he's good.

-Oh, lovely! Only when he's good, though?

-Yeah.

-Where do you keep the food in the house?

-I keep his dry biscuits

in the cupboard and I keep wet food pouches

in the fridge if they've been opened.

Yes, that's a very good idea.

Keep open wet food pouches in the fridge, so they won't go off.

How much do you feed Brody?

I give him one food pouch a day

and dry biscuits - but he doesn't eat them all at once.

-Okey doke. Shall we give him some now, then?

-Yes.

-Right.

-OK, and now the wet food?

-Yes.

-Don't want to waste any, do we?

-No.

There we go.

Cats only eat a small amount of food at a time.

They may eat all their wet food and just a little dry.

Don't worry, they'll come back and nibble it later.

-I see something else here. A very fancy thing, isn't it?

-Yes.

What's this all about?

-Brody likes running water. It's like a mini waterfall.

-It is, isn't it?!

Now, a lot of cats like to drink running water.

Some cats even go to the tap to drink it. This device is very clever,

cos it's got running water from here that dribbles down,

so Brody can get some nice, fresh running water. What a very lucky cat!

-Brody is such a cuddly, lovely cat, isn't he?

-Yes.

Oh, he's loving these cuddles.

If Brody could do anything,

what do you think he would do?

DRUMROLL

If my pet could do anything, he would jump on rooftops...

and jump from house to house.

He would go in someone else's house...

..and take another cat's food and water.

And, then, he would go back up on the rooftops and do a somersault.

And at the end he would dress in a kilt and play the bagpipes.

Brody's a very lucky cat. Today he's getting a special treat.

He's getting his claws clipped

and he's going to be groomed at the parlour.

Rory, please can you help me put Brody in his carry-case?

-Yeah, for sure. You got it there?

-Yes.

You open it up and I'll put Brody in.

Here we go.

There we go, Brody.

He looks nice and safe in there, doesn't he?

I like to give him a toy, so he's not scared.

OK, you pop that in.

There we go.

-OK, good to go!

-Come on.

-Hi, Jack.

-Hi, Rory. Hi, Lily.

What's Brody getting done today?

He's getting his nails done.

So, we clip his nails and then give him a brush.

Come on. Oh.

There we go.

He's a bit wriggly today, isn't he?

Like that.

Because Brody's an indoor cat, it's important for him

to get his claws clipped every four-to-six weeks.

So, we'll take about a third off

-and that'll stop him getting stuck in the carpet.

-OK.

-Do you know

-how many claws Brody has?

-He has five on each paw at the front,

and four on each paw at the back.

-That's right, so 18 in total. That's a lot of claws, isn't it?

-Yes.

There you are. All nice and short.

Very good.

We've clipped the claws, is it time for some brushing now?

-Do you want to do some brushing?

-Yes.

It's important to brush him, so his hair doesn't mat.

Gently brush the way the hair grows.

I'll get him with a comb for taking all the undercoat away,

so it stays nice and clean, and nice and soft.

The hair he's shedding comes off in the comb

-and stops fur balls.

-Sometimes Brody gets fur balls.

That's when they get fur in their mouth

-and then they make a funny noise.

-Do they?

-Yeah.

-Is that because they're coughing it up?

-Yeah.

That's why it's very important to brush him with this nice comb.

You can see there all the hair that's come out. Look at all that.

-That's Brody just about done now.

-Great, let's get his box.

-Here you go, Brody.

-One, two, three!
