Thieves will steal our cars, our valuables, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
just about anything they can get their hands on. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
To cut down on crime and antisocial behaviour, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
the police and other agencies are using new tactics | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
and technology, where the bad guys actually get caught in the act. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
Brilliant footage. Police officers love CCTV. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
Local councils, shops and businesses are laying some traps of their own. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
As soon as he walked into the picture I knew who he was. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
And the general public, too, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
can help unsuspecting crooks get their comeuppance. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
We definitely needed proof. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
You're not going to get away with it, you might as well pack up. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
It made me swallow with pride, it was brilliant. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
So anyone who's up to no good had better think twice. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
They might just get caught red-handed. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Today, a jewellery snatch. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
The raider's fast, but the shop staff are faster. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
It's so much quicker than I remember. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
-I'm like a ninja! -SHE LAUGHS | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Quick thinking and quick footed, they run rings around the raider. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
Also today, their mum's money is being stolen, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
so the family fakes some banknotes to set a cunning trap. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
We photocopied a couple of £20 notes. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
We had put there the bait | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
and we was waiting to see what would be taken. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
And not so much smash and grab as grab and smash. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
It's a demolition derby | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
when a dodgy driver makes off with a precious motor. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
These are the views from CCTV cameras in and around | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
a jewellery shop in the historic city of Winchester. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
All they usually capture is the sight of customers browsing | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
and buying what's on offer, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
but these cameras have a bit of history themselves. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
Over the last few years...they've caught a few criminals, too. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
An armed gang targeted this shop two years running. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
We previously featured it on this programme. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
When three men run into your store wearing dark clothing, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
gloves and balaclavas, it's pretty frightening. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
When they pull up a gun, it's terrifying. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
The first time, the robbers were successful. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
They actually got away with a quarter of a million pounds' worth of jewellery. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
But the second time, the jewellers were ready for them | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
with some new security equipment. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Everything we had planned worked perfectly. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
Some of the gang ended up in prison. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Then, just recently, a man walks up to the shop and goes inside. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
Now, he clearly hasn't watched our previous programmes, naughty boy. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
If he had, he probably wouldn't attempt what he's about to do here. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
These staff are skilled at making and selling jewellery, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
but they've also become highly experienced in the art of catching crooks. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
Jeremy France first opened his doors in Winchester 25 years ago. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
As the turnover grew, so did the chance of being turned over. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
Any jeweller is a target, and the larger the volume or amount | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
of jewellery you carry, then the more likely you are to be a target. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
And the criminals have a lot of time on their hands to watch you | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
and to decide how to rob you. We have to stay one step ahead and we do. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
We do it through our own trade, our insurers | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
and through our own perseverance and watching. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
Jeremy invested in a fog cloaking system, which prevents | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
robbers from seeing the jewellery and drives them out of the shop. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
He also installed a sprayer, | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
which marks thieves with special encoded liquid. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
Once it's on, it doesn't come off again. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
It is always in the path of the exit. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
That gives us time to hit the button so they run under it, | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
it activates, and you cannot get past it. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
And because of the liquid's unique code, | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
it directly links the criminal to the jewellery shop. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
In the police station, every criminal is tested for the DNA liquid. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
If you have it on you, you were there. It's 100% conviction rate. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
But it seems some thieves still reckon it's worth the risks... | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
if they get in and out quick enough. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
Well, let's just see if they're right. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
It's mid-afternoon on a weekday. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
While there's a quiet moment with no customers, Larissa, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
one of the sales staff, is playing a game with Buster, Jeremy's puppy. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
Not exactly a guard dog. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
Larissa works in the jewellers on a temporary basis. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
She spends most of her time on the high seas. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
I have been in the Merchant Navy since I was 19, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
but always worked in other fields such as jewellers | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
and shoe shops in between ships, so you would think that my danger | 0:04:52 | 0:04:57
and excitement comes from being in the Merchant Navy. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
However, it seems to be that it's more at the jewellers. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
A little while later, a man walks into the shop. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
The gentleman came in, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
I obviously got up from playing with the puppy and approached him. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
And he was... Nothing suspicious. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
He was quite quiet, quite calm. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
The man asks to look at two gold bracelets from the window display. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
Just had the two straight out and was asking him | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
what he was looking for and for a reason - | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
was it for a birthday or present or anything? | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
And he said it was for his sister's birthday. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
And he said he was worried about the size of her wrists | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
and that she had quite large wrists, which I thought was quite weird, | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
cos he was quite a smaller framed gentleman. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
Other staff walk into the sales area. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
The man picks one of the bracelet up | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
to check the size against his own wrist. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
-Larissa senses a slight change in his behaviour. -He was kind of... | 0:05:48 | 0:05:54
It wasn't quite agitated cos it wasn't that bold, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
cos I think I would have noticed it more, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
but he was a little bit kind of skittish. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
He made his excuses and had to go and make a phone call, so he stepped | 0:06:03 | 0:06:08
outside the shop and I just said that I'd keep the bracelets aside for him. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
The man leaves and wanders out of camera view. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
Almost 20 minutes later he returns and is greeted by Buster. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
Larissa is dealing with another customer. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
By now, Jeremy has arrived at work | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
and is holding a meeting in the back office. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
Although I'm at the back doing business, | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
I am actually watching at the same time. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
Jeremy's daughter Harriet comes through to see if she can help the man, | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
but he insists on waiting for Larissa. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
I knew what bracelets he wanted to see and the reasons why, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
so he had kind of established a story, so to speak. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
This man was quite clever. He actually built up a rapport, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
he came back several times, he asked questions. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
He put us to ease, if you like. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
But Larissa is still dealing with her customer. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
The man steps outside again for another phone call. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
Someone will pop outside to make a phone call, | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
but to do it two times in such a short space, it was quite unusual. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
Another couple of minutes go by. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
Then he comes in again and waits for Larissa. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
Finally, Larissa is free to serve the man again. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
I got... Placed the bracelets out in front of him again, | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
and it was at this point he was quite quiet | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
and quite hesitant with conversation. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
I imagine there's a wee drop of adrenaline running around. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
And then I could tell that something was going to happen | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
because of the way he was picking up the bracelets. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
He picked up the two together and it was kind of fumbled. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
I did make good eye contact with him, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
but he was trying hard to look down at the bracelets. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
At that moment, it did feel like it was a lifetime, | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
although it was only half a second. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
I could see that he was going to do it. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
And he does. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:46
He sprints for the front door, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
but can he make it through before Larissa locks it? | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
She reaches for the button with razor-sharp reflexes. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
He's still got a few feet to go. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
She presses the button. He's trapped. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
My initial reaction was to lock that door. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
We've done a lot of training to... | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
The first thing you do is to lock that door, | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
and knowing where the lock was was key, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
and luckily it was right by my side. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
This is Larissa's reaction run at normal speed. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
Bam! The door's locked. That was fast! | 0:08:20 | 0:08:24
Buster, the puppy, runs for cover | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
as the man starts to shout threats and pulls on the door in a frenzy. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
Not always a good idea to lock a door with criminals, | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
especially if they have guns, | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
but when it's a snatch it's not a bad idea. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:35
It gives you thinking space, and, well, Larissa was thinking. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
I shouted for Jeremy, to get his attention, | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
and went to hit the panic button. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
The reason was to make sure that the traceable liquid was activated. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:49
The man is soaked in the encoded liquid, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
permanent proof that he has been at the scene of the crime. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
Now Jeremy has to decide what to do next. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
He was extremely violent, he was kicking and smashing the door, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
swearing at us, threatening us with violence if we didn't open the door. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:05
I had to make a decision whether we waited for the police to arrive and | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
make an easier arrest, or let him go and therefore not endanger my staff. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
The decision was very simple, we let him go. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
Which I did, and then put my hands up to show to him that I'd | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
unlocked the door and wasn't right to do anything else afterwards. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
Later, the jewellery thief legs it, but Jeremy is in hot pursuit. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
It was about here that he just literally stopped | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
and turned around, and of course my heart jumped into my throat. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
Now, maybe it's time to call Ghostbusters, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
as this lost soul sets out to steal some spirits. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
But these spirits are a little bit more worldly, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
and this is a story that's probably going to come back | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
and haunt him for some time. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:53
It's after midnight and what's this moving silently through | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
the aisles of this off-licence? Is it a ghostly apparition? | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
Well, maybe. But my money is on it being a burglar | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
hiding under a bedsheet with eyeholes cut out so he can see. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
And this troubled soul isn't here to haunt anyone. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
He just wants to spirit away some of the alcohol. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
And with that in mind, heads for the stock room. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
He seems to know what he wants, but as he bends to pick it up, | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
the flimsy costume falls forward and the eyeholes move out of position. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:33
Realising he hasn't got a ghost of a chance | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
of carrying things out in this state, he bottles it. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
His identity remains shrouded in mystery... | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
..but hopefully the Ghostbusters will catch up with him soon. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
Now to a serious betrayal of trust. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
They call it financial abuse, when someone takes advantage | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
of their position to steal from the vulnerable. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
This bedroom belongs to Mavis and Stan, | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
an elderly couple from Plymouth, Devon. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
Money has been going missing from the room, so their family | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
have set a trap for the thief, using a hidden camera and fake banknotes. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
That's Mavis's carer and friend. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
She's come upstairs on her own to collect a fresh towel. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
There's no need for her to venture further into the room... | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
..and yet she does. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
It was sickening in that the real sad thing was it was sad for Mother. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
The fake money flushes out a false friend. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
Sadly, since these events, Mavis has passed away, | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
but her family want the full story to be told. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
Mavis, a former nurse, | 0:11:58 | 0:11:59
did a fair bit of caring herself in her lifetime. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
She leaves behind a large family, including seven children. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
Son Gary is the youngest of the boys. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
Four boys, three girls, and we have two stepbrothers and a stepsister. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:15
It's a lot to keep happy. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
Even so, Mavis managed to do so, together with Stan, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
her second husband, who she was with for 40 years. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
The perfect wife. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:25
She's do anybody a favour. She was that type of person. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
She was one in one million. She really was. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
In her late 70s, Mavis's health goes downhill. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
The family rally round. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
But, as time goes by, | 0:12:39 | 0:12:40
they realise Mavis needs more help than they can differ. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
We decided, you know, with mother saying, yes, it would be OK, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
to get a care worker in to start helping out. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
Various care workers come in, but there's one who Mavis | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
forms a particular attachment to. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
She was seen to be a perfect person. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
More than anything, my mother used to like to have a chin-wag, a chat. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
Mavis soon asks if her new friend | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
can take over more of the care worker shifts. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
As she got more friendly, Mum let her go upstairs | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
and she would pick up the towels and all that. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
Then, one day, Gary hears some alarming news. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
I had a phone call from one of my sisters to say | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
that they thought that £1,000 has gone missing, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
but they couldn't be sure because obviously it was mother's money | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
and it was just all in a drawer. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:28
Mavis has £300 collected from the bank for her each week. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:33
She's from a generation that likes to have cash in the house, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
but she rarely gets through it all, so she puts the rest in an envelope. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
When it reaches £1,000, her daughters seal the envelope | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
and put it away in a bedroom drawer. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
They think she has managed to save up several thousand pounds. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
From then, really, we kept a closer eye on it | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
and, within a week, another £2,000 had gone missing. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:57
But who is taking the envelopes? | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
We are a close, honest family with each other. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
We knew that it had to be an outsider. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
Only one carer, Jennifer, ever goes upstairs. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:11
She's supposed to come to here, open the Ottoman - | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
as you can see, towels - take a towel and go down. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:18
The family believe she hasn't been stopping there. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
Then she's come here, she's had to go through all these drawers, which is | 0:14:21 | 0:14:26
six of them, to find that, finally, in this drawer here, | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
this is where the money was. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
Suspicion isn't, however, proof. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
To convince the police, | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
and Mavis herself, they need to catch the carer in the act. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
Luckily, Gary has a friend in the surveillance business who | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
offers to set up a hidden camera. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
The camera was set up in a corner above the door. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:48
It just looked like a burglar alarm. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
You wouldn't suspect nothing. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
Next, they need to set a trap, but don't want Mavis to lose any | 0:14:52 | 0:14:57
more money, so they decide to try their hands at counterfeiting. | 0:14:57 | 0:15:01
We photocopied a couple of £20 notes | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
and put all white paper in between, | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
put the envelopes back in | 0:15:08 | 0:15:09
and sealed them and we was waiting to see what would be taken. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
And it doesn't take long for the bait to be taken. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
First morning, she walks into the bedroom, | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
past the box of towels and goes straight to the top drawer. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
She has a quick rummage, possibly to see what's there, | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
then heads back downstairs. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:33
Two days later, she goes past the towels again, | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
checks the money drawer for a few seconds | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
before leaving empty-handed. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
Perhaps she's lost her nerve. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
Oh, no. Maybe Friday's a better day for thieving. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
After collecting a clean towel, | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
this calculating woman can't resist the lure of the cash any longer | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
and takes an envelope from the drawer. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
Little does she know it's full of photocopies and plain paper. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:06
It's not easy to see but that little dark shape there is the envelope. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:13
She tucks it into her trousers as she leaves the room. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
The family watch the images they caught on camera. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
It was sickening in that the real sad thing was it was sad for Mother. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:25
Cried. Constantly cried. You know, "How could she? | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
"For all what I've done for her." She couldn't believe that she | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
could do such a thing to her cos she trusted her so much. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
We had a job to do and our next job was to phone the police to | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
get them around to obviously press charges. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
But this so-called friend already knows she's been found out. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
Once she left this house, she realised that she was caught | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
cos once she opened the envelope she realised it was paper. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
She immediately resigns from her position at the care company and | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
when the police arrive she hands over an envelope containing £1,000. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:02
The one containing the fake paper notes, | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
she had already thrown in the bin. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
In court, she is found guilty of theft and attempted theft | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
and is sentenced to 40 weeks in prison, suspended for two years. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:17
The judge also ordered that she pays a large sum | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
in compensation to the family. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
The hidden camera has done its job well. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
If you don't catch them in the act, there will be no charges. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:28
We were told that by the police - if you never had the CCTV, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
you wouldn't have had a conviction. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
Mavis didn't live to see her carer brought to trial. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
After suffering a fall at home, she went into hospital | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
and passed away two weeks later. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
We had a good sendoff for her. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
The family were very close, all stood together. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
It's a big loss to me. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:49
Yes. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:52 | |
Although this business was a strain and stress for her, | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
the family are determined not to let it taint the happy memories | 0:17:55 | 0:17:59
of Mavis's last years. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
We all love our mother and we'll never forget her. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
She was such a beautiful woman, my wife, no two ways about that. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
If, like Mavis's family, | 0:18:14 | 0:18:15
we suspect someone we trust his stealing from us, what should we do? | 0:18:15 | 0:18:20
If it's money that being stolen, | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
think about marking the serial numbers. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
If, for any investigation, we were to arrest somebody, the first | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
thing we would look is to try and identify that that £20 was your £20. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:33
In order to gather the evidence | 0:18:33 | 0:18:34
to actually prove that the thefts are taking place, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
there is an awful lot of very good technology and kit out there. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
Covert cameras can be hidden inside a pen, inside a flowerpot. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:46
DNA-encoded liquid. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:47
Once you've put this on to your property, if it's stolen | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
then the police recover it, | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
we can track it back and trace it to your household. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
Don't keep large amounts of money in the house. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
A bank will have much better security than you will. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
Call your local police. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:02
Get some advice from them and then take it from there. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
Coming up, jeweller Jeremy is chasing a bracelet snatcher. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:15
I was screaming out, "Stop! He's a jewellery thief!" | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
Can he bag this not-so-diamond geezer? | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
But first, car crime. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
Some criminals don't like spending their own money on cars. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
They'd rather steal ours. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
This next car thief, though, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:38
hasn't counted on the owner using some top gear to track him down. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
This car isn't just any car. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
It's a limited edition rally Subaru and Simon's pride and joy. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:55
There's only about 30 left now on the road, so it's a very rare thing. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
But his rare classic motor almost becomes a thing of the past | 0:19:59 | 0:20:04
when a serial car thief jumps in to steal it. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
Thankfully, his bungled getaway is far from classic. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
We are in a village just outside Otley, near Leeds. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:23
This family-run car dealership has been here since the 1950s. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
Started about 60 years ago by my grandad. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
It's then been passed down to obviously my father, | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
and then now it's myself and my sister | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
that are mainly involved in the business. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
Simon runs the repair workshop... | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
How's it going? | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
..but cars aren't just his family's business, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
they're also his personal passion. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
Yeah, it's something that I love, really, so... | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
Although that's quite sad. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
Simon goes rallying and his own car is a much sought-after Subaru. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:56
The car is a special edition for Colin McRae, the rally driver, | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
but beyond that it does have a lot of sentimental value | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
cos it was the first car I bought with my own money. It's the car | 0:21:03 | 0:21:08
that my fiancee learned to drive in and just so many memories, really. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:13
But one dark day, contact with his cherished motor is broken. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
It's near closing time and Simon's about to check his car's oil level. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:23
I just brought it in before I went home, so I just left it there | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26
while I walked into the showroom to grab some of my stuff. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
Before he knows it, there's the sound of a familiar engine revving, | 0:21:29 | 0:21:33
followed by a loud crash. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
It wasn't just a slight bang, it was a real smash and wallop. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:41
CCTV cameras capture the sight of Simon's car leaving the garage | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
and the door looks badly damaged. Simon runs through to the workshop. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:50
It was just a state of destruction, really. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
There was oil everywhere, glass all on the floor. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
He races outside. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
We just saw him driving off down the road as we got to the forecourt. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:01
I thought I'd never see it again and I'd never own another one | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
cos really it is almost irreplaceable now. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
Simon and his colleagues rally round. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
They call the police and check their CCTV footage | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
to piece together what's happened. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
They see a man walking onto the forecourt. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
He got dropped off just on the main road there by another car, | 0:22:21 | 0:22:25
which then drove off and left him. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
Obviously, he's looking inside the cars here, trying to see | 0:22:27 | 0:22:30
if there's any keys in the ignition, but they were all locked. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
The man enters the service area. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
Obviously there was no-one in the workshop, which is quite unusual. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
The way out is narrow and lined with gear, | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
so there's not much room for manoeuvre. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
Reverses it flat-out down the workshop and he's got the door | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
open and he catches the door on the oil drum, which knocks the drum over. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
He then starts reversing again | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
and then the door gets caught on the wall there, at which point the glass | 0:22:54 | 0:22:58
smashes, he's cut his arm open on the door, there's blood everywhere. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:04
As well as hurting himself, the thief's damaged the car. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:08
It was difficult seeing it, obviously, with all the damage | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
and everything. It's quite upsetting. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
But Simon's beloved car is protected by some smart technology. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:16
The car actually has a tracker system fitted | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
so we phoned the tracker company, told them what had happened | 0:23:19 | 0:23:23
and they immediately activated the system. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
It means the police can find out its whereabouts...and they do. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:31
The thief left the car abandoned at a train station, | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
but with it he left behind some important evidence. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
There was blood over the door, | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
so obviously the police could then use his DNA. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
The police collect the CCTV footage and hold the car for forensic tests. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:48
Then, finally, Simon gets his dream wheels back. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
Obviously, it was a massive relief to me. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:54
I was overjoyed they'd found it complete. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
The DNA test results reveal the thief is 29-year-old Duane Kale. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:04
He is arrested and admits to stealing Simon's car and two others. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
In court, he's sentenced to three years in prison. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
The Subaru is repaired and is now back to its pristine condition. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
I'm really grateful to the police for their work in getting the car back. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
Obviously it's a really nice feeling that I've got back again and, | 0:24:22 | 0:24:27
yeah, still using it everyday. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
And, yeah, just feel very grateful that I can still drive it, really. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:33
We're in a Winchester jewellery shop. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:47
A thief has snatched two gold bracelets. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
Quick-thinking sales assistant Larissa has locked | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
the door in a flash and made sure he was doused in traceable liquid. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:58
He was quite aggressive, which was quite scary, but I knew, | 0:24:58 | 0:25:02
looking at Jeremy, waiting for his instruction, | 0:25:02 | 0:25:04
I knew he wouldn't put me in any harm's way. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
The shop owner, Jeremy, has given the order to let the thief out | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
and then decides to chase after him. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
My decision was to track him. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
He was covered in a DNA-coded liquid. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
He was going to get convicted of the crime, | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
but only if we knew who he was and we could find him. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
He asks for a phone so he can update police on the thief's whereabouts. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:27
My staff are very quick and I had a phone in my hand in a second. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
Then he heads out after the thief. | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
There was a lot of people on the other side of the road | 0:25:33 | 0:25:35
and I was screaming out, "Stop! He's a jewellery thief!" | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
And, of course, you're kind of hoping | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
that somebody will do something but they just didn't. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
Even though there's some shouting, | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
the thief doesn't realise he's being followed. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
Jeremy keeps his distance and phones the police. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
At the danger 50-something and running with a phone in your hand, | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
there was a lot of panting going on. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
They realised that I was giving chase and they were taking my information, | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
they were passing it on to the squad cars that were in the area. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:03
While Jeremy continues to track the thief, | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
another police unit arrives at the shop. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
Larissa goes in search of Buster, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
the puppy who had a scary time during the theft. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
We actually found him under the chair, cowering and shaking, | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
so I spent the time kind of looking after him | 0:26:16 | 0:26:18
and not really thinking about my own fear. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
It wasn't till afterwards, I was being interviewed, | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
that I did think, "That was quite a scary situation | 0:26:23 | 0:26:25
"and it could have got a lot worse," | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
which is when you start thinking about the what-ifs. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
I think that's when you start getting a bit scared of what | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
could have happened. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
Meanwhile, Jeremy follows the thief into some backstreets. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
Then the man turns left into an alleyway. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
I stopped. A few moments later, he came back, | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
fully changed into completely different clothing. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
The thief now realises Jeremy is on his tail | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
and starts to look threatening. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
But Jeremy has set out to track the man for the police, | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
not fight with him. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
And I made the right decision. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:56
I stepped back and I literally waved him through. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
Strangely, he allowed me to follow him | 0:27:00 | 0:27:02
and he knew I was following him at this point. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:04
The man eventually climbs a high, spiked fence and escapes... | 0:27:04 | 0:27:08
but not for long. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:09
Because when the police arrived, Jeremy shows them the alleyway | 0:27:09 | 0:27:13
where the man got changed and they find his discarded clothes. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:17
Very fortunately, when they did a DNA test | 0:27:17 | 0:27:19
on the sweat around the hat, they found this man was on record. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:23
Three days later, they broke down his door and made the arrest. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
